from the E D I T O R I’m so thankful our high school and college graduates can once again walk across the stage to receive their diplomas, that they can gather and toss their caps into the air, and their families and friends can be present to celebrate with them. I don’t even have a child graduating and still, when I saw the photos all over social media and looked at the dozens of senior portraits we received for this issue, I cried with happiness. You might cry with happiness too, when you see your child or friend in our special feature, “Celebrating the Class of 2021.” In putting together this issue, we contacted the principals of Battlefield and Patriot high schools and asked them to select one senior who they think is absolutely stellar. Their selections, Caroline Gee of Battlefield High School, and Kyle Thaller of Patriot High School, are indeed all-around super star students. We hope you’ll enjoy meeting them this month. I know we have! Of course, June isn’t just about grads. It’s also about dads — and we’re celebrating them, too. Don’t miss Douglas Graham’s delightful “Obsession in the Stream,” about becoming a lifelong brook trout fisherman at his grandfather’s knee, and “What’s Brewing for Father’s Day,” a round-up of many of our area’s terrific breweries that includes information on the activities, food trucks, and pint specials they’ve got planned to celebrate pop. Until next month, congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 2021 and Happy Father’s Day!

out and do things on your own. You don't necessarily like to be in a gathering of people that you don't know. You might use counterproductive coping skills, like having an extra glass of wine. Is it normal to feel anxious about leaving the house after months at home, even if you’ve gotten the COVID-19 vaccine? If someone is able to do their routines, like grocery shopping or visiting with friends outdoors, it’s normal anxiety even if they're extremely uncomfortable. There is a pandemic going on. Being concerned is normal.

COVID, anxiety and the return to 'normal' Adjustment takes time, but you can do it

I

f you’ve searched online for some version of, “What do I do if I’m freaking out?” you’ve got lots of company. Google searches on “panic attack” and “anxiety attack” hit a record last spring. The last year has been hard for many. Between concerns of contracting the virus to feelings of isolation, many have experienced symptoms of anxiety. Similarly, many people still feel anxious even as the COVID-19 vaccines roll out. Although it may seem as though we’re returning to a “prepandemic normal,” there are still several unknowns, and many feel apprehensive about going out in public again. Karyn O’Brien-Flannagan, Psy.D., clinical psychologist at Novant Health UVA Health System Behavioral Health and senior director of diversity and inclusion, discusses managing anxiety and

how to overcome the qualms or “scaries” of the new normal. Have more people come to you for help with anxiety during the pandemic? When the pandemic started, I already had patients who suffered from debilitating anxiety, like agoraphobia or obsessive-compulsive disorder. After COVID happened, they stopped feeling anxious because the worst happened and they were still here, alive and fine. It encouraged them to do more. I had a second influx of patients who had never struggled with anxiety or their anxiety was very manageable, but all of a sudden it was really debilitating. You mentioned agoraphobia. What's the difference between agoraphobia and social anxiety? Agoraphobia means you don't want to go out at all. You don't want to leave your house. With social anxiety, you’ll go

HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

What can people do on their own to ease their feelings of anxiety? During the situation that makes you anxious, it might feel like your skin is crawling, like doom is imminent. Instead of beating yourself up, be accepting of how you feel. Tell yourself, “It’s OK to feel this way.” For example, if you feel nervous about going back into the office after a year of working from home, you’re going to white knuckle it a few times on your drive in. Chances are after the fifth or sixth time, you'll be OK. What’s an example of anxiety that might need treatment? For a diagnosis like generalized anxiety disorder or agoraphobia, there has to be a functional impairment in your professional or personal life. If folks can’t go out or if they used to be able to drive and now cannot get in the car when they're supposed to be somewhere, that’s a functional impairment. They're unable to do what they need to do in order to function in society. Describe the process to treat anxiety disorders. When I have patients with OCD or agoraphobia, we start by acknowledging their feelings and adding coping skills like controlled breathing. I’ll ask them to reward themselves in a small way when they expose themselves

to things they fear. The idea is to do it gradually and consistently. Nobody suddenly wakes up one day and never wants to leave the house. It's a gradual progression to agoraphobia or social anxiety. Something negative must have happened and so the brain shied away from it. The answer is about teaching your brain, ‘Aha, look! You didn’t die!’ How common are anxiety disorders? More common than you realize. It’s one of the most common diagnoses I see now. Sounds like the most important message for anxious people is that there’s hope. Whenever somebody comes to me with an anxiety disorder so severe they think they’ll never get better, I love being able to say, “Give me six months. I promise things will get better.” I love seeing them go out and have positive experiences. They realize they have resources that they weren't even aware of because they weren't using them.

8 Steps to Take Immediately After Losing a Spouse BY DONNA M. WOOD, CPA/PFS, CFP ®

S

urviving the loss of a spouse is never easy. Many times, widows and widowers feel lost as they try to navigate their new normal. Although having a checklist or a guide may not cover all of your unique needs, I hope that these tips will help you to start making progress on getting organized, respecting your spouse’s wishes, and setting yourself up for a stable future. #1: Address Your Spouse’s Wishes Your first step should be to address whatever wishes your spouse has imparted to you or to your estate planning attorney. Be sure to contact your attorney right away in order to understand what they need from you to execute your spouse’s wishes. #2: Obtain Death Certificates Usually, the funeral home

8

{ JUNE 2021 |

will contact the Social Security office to report the death and arrange for your spouse’s death certificate to be created. However, if you should lose it or if it gets lost in the shuffle, you can order certified copies of a death certificate from your state health department. #3: Gain Access to and Consolidate Accounts Keeping a record of all open accounts and having the passwords on hand to access them can help make this process easier. However, whether you have a record or not, it’s important to comb through all financial documents to ensure that you are appropriately reassigning ownership or consolidating your spouse’s financial accounts with your own. Accounts you should look

HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

for include: • Checking and saving accounts • Investment or retirement accounts • Credit Cards • Mortgage(s) and loans • Life insurance policies (or other insurance policies that are only in your spouse’s name) Before moving and closing accounts verify any monthly or periodic deposits and payments that may flow through the accounts. These may have to be moved or cancelled prior to closing accounts. #4: Review Your “Life Admin” Checklist Building a life with someone often comes with many shared “administrative” responsibilities. These could include financial responsibilities such as bills to pay, or they could include more general responsibilities like who maintains the Costco membership. It’s wise to start by looking at your bank statements - what have you paid for over the last several years that’s a recurring expense? This list will be a good indicator of what type of administrative responsibilities will shift to the surviving spouse - whether they used to handle them or not. A few “life admin” items to be on the lookout for include: • Bills • Memberships to clubs or shopping centers • Gym memberships • Subscriptions (magazines, Netflix, Amazon, cable) • Cell phones • Prescriptions (especially if your spouse had a recurring prescription that refills or is sent to the home automatically) #5: Confirm That Social Security Has Been Contacted As mentioned previously, funeral homes typically report deaths directly to the Social Security Administration.

However, it doesn’t hurt to confirm. Note that you must call your local Social Security office to report your spouse’s death and apply for survivor benefits - you cannot do so online and at present you cannot do so in person. #6: Contact All 3 Credit Bureaus You will want to report your spouse’s death to all three credit bureaus - Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian. This helps to ensure that your spouse’s credit will be frozen, and prevent scammers from applying for credit in your spouse’s name. #7: Memorialize Social Media and Handle Your Loved Ones’ Digital Estate In today’s digital world, you might want to ensure your spouse’s digital presence is memorialized or shut down after they pass away. It’s common to shut down email accounts, however, there are options to “memorialize” accounts on Facebook. This allows for the account to stay up, and prevents scammers from using it account or hacking it in any way. It also helps you to preserve any digital memories saved. #8: Surround Yourself with Community Although this can be easier said than done when you’re in the middle of grief, it’s important to surround yourself with a supportive community while you walk this journey. Family, friends, loved ones, and trusted advisors (financial or otherwise) can all help to guide you through this challenging time. WE HAVE THE OLD CARPET UP AND ARE ABOUT TO LAY THE NEW FLOOR. BEFORE WE DO, SHOULD WE CONSIDER PAINTING?

Having the furniture moved out of the room so you can replace the floor is certainly a help, but opinion is divided on when the best time to paint is. Contractors are always concerned about other trades coming in after then and making a mess of their work. Our typical workflow is to paint the walls, install the floors, and then have the painters return to install the shoe molding and touch up any dings to the walls. Our favorite painter likes to joke that if you are going to replace the flooring anyway, might as well let him get in first and then take it up. There will always be little things to address along the way. Clear communication PRO TIP

and setting expectations goes a long way toward preventing issues from becoming problems.

WE TOOK A QUARTER TO THE FLOORING SAMPLE TO APPROXIMATE OUR DOG’S NAILS AS A TEST FOR DURABILITY. DO YOU THINK THAT IS FINE? Funnily enough many abrasion resistance tests are not much different in principle. A slightly more scientific way to determine the durability of your intended vinyl flooring is to look up the thickness of the wear layer in the specs. It should be clearly listed on the box or website. Personally we like a 20 Mil wear layer for homes with pets, or children, or guests... Texture is another extremely important consideration when choosing LVT. Not only do we not want your pets claws to scratch the floor, but we also don’t want them sliding all over the place unable to get any traction. If you can feel the texture of the floor with your hand, it is likely sufficient for them. PRO TIP

WE ONLY HAVE EXPERIENCE INSTALLING HARDWOOD AND PERGO LAMINATE FLOORING. DO YOU HAVE ANY LVT

HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

INSTALLATION TIPS WE NEED TO KEEP IN MIND? The very first thing you need to do upon receiving your product is to inspect it. Open the box and look not just for damage, but to make sure that all of the pieces are from the same dye-lot. Once you are satisfied the colors match, “shuffle” the patterns to make sure you don’t have multiple pieces that look the same next to each other. Lastly install the pieces varying the ending point by a third on each board. The illusion is ruined if there is a seam line across the entire floor or every other board. Plan out your installation and take your time. If you have to remove previously installed boards, you risk breaking the flanges that hold the pieces together tightly. Also, as you install in a single direction, realizing you made a mistake can mean undoing most if not all of your work. PRO TIP

ONE OF MY CONCERNS IS LIQUID GETTING UNDERNEATH THE FLOORING AND BECOMING TRAPPED. IS THAT SOMETHING THAT WE SHOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT? Assuming you took care not to break any of the flanges and installed the

pieces correctly, there should be a tight enough fit that water or other fluids should not penetrate the seams. Obviously the Grand Canyon was cut by water, so while nothing is immune, you should be fine. Some products require specific tools or special certification in order for the manufacturer to honor the warranty. Keep that in mind when you do it yourself or even when you hire someone other than a certified professional. PRO TIP

HOW IMPORTANT IS ADDRESSING ANY ISSUE WITH THE SUBFLOOR WHILE WE HAVE THE CHANCE? It is much easier to get at the subfloor now and certainly any known issue should be addressed. There isn’t much point in buying fancy running shoes if your foot is broken. Ignoring the issue won’t make it go away and will increase the expense and hassle of correcting it in the future. If part of your subfloor woes involve concerns about pets and liquids, natural (as opposed to synthetic) shellac to seal all the subfloors before laying new flooring. Wear a respirator, open the windows, and shut off any potential source of ignition. When you are done, no odors will penetrate the new shellac layer. PRO TIP

Super Seniors W

hen we asked the principals of Battlefield High School and Patriot High School to tell us who among their Class of 2021 was the most all-around impressive senior, neither took more than a moment to respond. “Caroline Gee,” said Ryan Ferrera, principal of Battlefield High School. “Kyle Thaller,” said Michael Bishop, principal of Patriot High School. With that information in hand, we sent Caroline and Kyle five questions and, when we received their replies, knew immediately why they’d been selected. Read on and you’ll know why, too!

Caroline Gee BATTLEFIELD HIGH SCHOOL, HAYMARKET What is your favorite memory from high school?

This is a tough one as I have so many awesome memories. I think my favorite memory is being at the FRC District Championship in 2019. I got to meet Dr. Lori Glaze, the Director of the Planetary Science Division at NASA! Talk to us about the pandemic. How tough has it been for you to attend classes virtually? How have you stayed sane? What have you learned from this experience that will help you in the future?

I count myself lucky that my learning style has allowed me to transition to online learning easily. The toughest part has been missing out on all the experiences I had always just assumed I would have, like hanging out with friends, attending school events, and normal field hockey and robotics seasons. A positive outcome for me was learning how to define myself in the absence of clubs, teams, and other organizations. I think a lot of people my age fall into this trap of defining themselves by what groups they’re a part of, but this experience has forced a lot of us to find a sense of self without those labels.

What are your plans for after graduation? College? Trade school? Travel?

I will attend Purdue University to study Aeronautical/Astronautical Engineering with a possible minor in Computer Science. I also plan on joining the Air Force ROTC program. I would really love to study abroad in a Spanishspeaking country. What’s the one thing your classmates will most remember you for?

I’m fairly certain most of my classmates know me as “that girl who’s super obsessed with space”! Where will you be in 10 years? What do you see yourself doing, where do you see yourself living?

I hope to be an engineer working on something that advances human spaceflight capability. In my free time, I hope to mentor a robotics team and volunteer at church.

Fast Facts about Caroline Do you play an instrument?

I don’t play anymore, but I was a violinist for six years. Favorite color?

Royal purple. Do you play a sport?

Field Hockey! I’m one of Battlefield’s Varsity team captains this year. Chocolate or Vanilla?

Chocolate all the way. Favorite professional sports team?

I don’t really follow any teams but I always enjoy watching the Caps play. What would you like people to know about you that we haven’t asked?

The best advice I’ve ever heard is “the grass is always greener where you water it.”

Kyle Thaller PATRIOT HIGH SCHOOL, NOKESVILLE What is your favorite memory from high school?

My favorite memory from high school would have to be one this one: In early February 2020, I made my way to Senator Cory Booker on the Senate Chamber floor. He had his hand raised, which meant he needed something. Earlier, I had just given Senator Manchin a glass of milk, but before I could get to Senator Booker, Senator Manchin stopped me and said with a superficial hostile tone, “Excuse me, could I get more milk? This stuff you gave me is sour.” I was mortified, and as I was about to stammer out a response, Senator Booker walked up, laughing heartily, and said, “Don’t worry Kyle; the milk’s not sour; he is.” Senator Manchin then slapped Senator Booker’s shoulder while shaking his head and smiling, saying, “Real funny, Cory; that’s rich!” I then immediately went back to get fresh milk. As I was walking, I thought, “Did that really happen? Am I dreaming? If I am, I never want to wake up.” Talk to us about the pandemic. How tough has it been for you to attend classes virtually? How have you stayed sane? What have you learned from this experience that will help you in the future?

The Pandemic has been tough but rewarding. On the one hand, the U.S. Senate Page Program ended early in April 2020 because it was too dangerous for our safety and for the safety of the Senators (who are all pretty old). This was disappointing, but because of it I was able to go to Sudan and South Sudan in October to check up on the three clinics my organization, Kyle Campaigns for Change, is supporting with insulin and diabetes supplies. What are your plans for after graduation? College? Trade school? Travel?

I plan to attend college and major in Philosophy and Political Science. I also plan to spend a semester at the Senate or the House of Representatives. Finally, I’ll continue with my work in Sudan and South Sudan.

Where will you be in 10 years? What do you see yourself doing, where do you see yourself living?

In ten years, I see myself as serving as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia working for the Justice Department as a Federal prosecutor.

Fast Facts about Kyle Do you play an instrument?

No, but I love listening to classical music and rock. Favorite color(s)?

Red and gray. Do you play a sport?

I used to row crew and throw discus for track.

What’s the one thing your classmates will most remember you for?

Chocolate or Vanilla?

The one thing that my classmates will remember me most for is my overall friendliness. I am able to make friends rather easily and I just get along with nearly everybody.

What would you like people to know about you that we haven’t asked?

Obsession in the Stream 48 Years After First Casting A Bamboo Fly Rod, Douglas Graham Is Still Chasing Brookies In The Blue Ridge

TEXT AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY DOUGLAS GRAHAM

I

n the fall of 1972 my grandfather loaded me up in his pickup truck and drove me from Virginia’s Tidewater region to the Blue Ridge Mountains near Luray with two split bamboo rods — and infected me with brook trout fishing on the fly. I was 12 years old. I have not recovered from that trip in 48 years. In the years following that fall trip so long ago, I’ve learned everything I could learn about the craft. I read every book I could find, and I learned about tying my own flies and any technique used in fly-fishing both fresh and saltwater. Hundreds of books and thousands of hours on the water, it’s been a life’s pursuit and to this day a continuing education. Somewhere in there was a career in photojournalism where I witnessed things

20

{ JUNE 2021 |

people should never have to see. But even with that time consuming pursuit, I managed to work in fishing. It kept me grounded and sane in an otherwise insane job. Often I’d stay an extra day after an assignment and fish the local waters. Places like the Snake River in Wyoming, where I landed my first brown trout, the Deschutes in Central Oregon for my first cutthroat, and of course when I was in Missoula, I fished the Blackfoot River. Now retired and living slower and closer to the earth, I’ve decided there is no better fly fishing in America than what my grandfather had infected me with 40 some years ago in our backyard of the Piedmont region. I’ve fished a whole year from my

motorcycle, logging in my fishing journal the ebb and flow of the water, the weather, the fish I’ve caught, and the seasons of Virginia. I’ve taught my wife and daughter to fish, and even an Airedale. My obsession is now with the “squaretails” close to home; I don’t really have any desire

Discover the Best Trout Streams in Shenandoah National Park There are about twentytwo terrific trout streams in the park and author Harry W. Murray of Edinburg, Virginia has written a comprehensive guide to all of them. His book, Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park, is considered a “must read” for Virginia trout fishermen. Available on Amazon.

Top Spots for Fly Fishing Gear DAVIS GUNS & GEAR 417 Browning Court, Ste. C. Purcellville (540) 441-7625 Davisgunsandgear.com DISTRICT ANGLING 2105 N. Pollard Street, Arlington (703) 268-7500; Districtangling.com

to travel to fish. Well, OK, I’d go to Slovenia for marble trout, but for the most part I’m content with the brookies. Our storied brook trout live in one of the most beautiful places on earth, the Blue Ridge Mountains. I love that I can fish mid-week on almost any stream in the Shenandoah Park and have the stream all to myself. As far as the brookie being easy to catch, well yes, some of them are because they are basically starving on our small freestone creeks. The young fish will hit anything that moves. With that said, try and catch 11- to 14-inch brookies that lurk in our waters and see how many you land in a day! The older and larger fish are tricky and very selective. Casting and catching a big brookie in the tight confines of our little streams is perhaps

22

{ JUNE 2021 |

one of the most fulfilling moments for me as a fly fisherman. In this photo essay, the fish itself will reveal why this is my obsession — from the landscape that this little fish lives in, to the fish itself. The brook trout out of the water has bright orange fins with a white as snow underbelly. The orange lower fins have a bright white leaning edge bordered by a jetblack strip and its sides are green and yellow with pale blue spots surrounding a pink center dot. It’s as if the little native fish was painted by the hand of God. The colorful fish in the water just disappears. The brook trout is one of many things Mother Nature has done that is just a little better than perfection.

Have a Good (Hair) Day! BY SUE BALDANI

M

ercedes Jacobs didn’t set out to open her own hair salon. After going to school to learn how to style hair, she ended up winning a hair show and a free trip to London, which both surprised and elated her since the competition was fierce. After that, with her newly learned skills, she sometimes worked out of her basement or rented space in an established salon in Gainesville. When the owner of that salon decided to sell, Jacobs grabbed on to this unexpected and exciting opportunity with both hands. “I took a leap of faith and bought it,” she says. She chose the name Three Ways Beautiful Salon because she felt that the salon experience should encompass the mind, body and soul. It’s not just about looking good, but also about nourishing the human spirit. A salon should be a place to get away and relax for a while. The salon itself is bright and airy, and Jacobs is friendly and full of energy. She has taken great care to make everything about the salon feel welcoming. When clients first walk in, there’s a coffee bar where they can pick up a complimentary fresh coffee, espresso, cappuccino or latte, which they can sit and enjoy while waiting for their appointment. Three Ways Beautiful will be celebrating its 5th anniversary this year and on September 18, a customer appreciation day will be held to mark the occasion. “There will be food, raffles and all kinds of exciting giveaways,” says Jacobs. Whether a long-time client or new customer, stop by, meet the owner, and learn all about the salon.

IS YOUR SOUL BURDENED?

NOW ENROLLING

Is your soul so burdened that you feel stretched to the limit and it seems that there is no end in sight? Are you burdened to the point of almost giving up? Do you remember the line from that old hymn And the burden of my heart rolled away? Believe it or not, we are not meant to carry these burdens. God does not desire that we are weighted down by the burdens of life. Listen to what the Bible says: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” - 1 Peter 5:7

Three Ways Beautiful’s five fabulous pros. From left to right: Courtney Johnson, Hairstylist; Oksana Luckey, Hairstylist; Brooke Bailey, Hairstylist/Manager; Mercedes Jacobs, Owner; and Clyde Wray, Salon Operations Manager.

BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK

Although being both a salon and spa for many years, the spotlight of the business going forward will be more on the salon. “We’re going to focus more on hair now styling, texturizing, coloring, and also offer some limited waxing,” Jacobs says. Whatever your hair type or style preference, there’s a stylist available who fits your particular need. “We don’t book people in order of what stylist is up next, but instead try to book who is best for that client,” says Jacobs. “When we talk to them we get an idea of what they are looking for, or if they have curly hair or straight hair. We match the client to the right stylist.” “Also, some salons charge for experience, which is fine, but all of our stylists are master stylists, so everybody is the same price. And we are all a team, so if one stylist can’t fit in their regular customer, another stylist is happy to do it.” There are 11 stylists right now and some have been with her from the beginning. During the five years the salon has been open, Jacobs says Three Ways Beautiful has won best salon four out of five times in Haymarket Lifestyle and has also won for best salon in Northern Virginia. “A lot of salons can be very intimidating places,” she says. “People tell me that they feel very welcome and very comfortable here. It’s not intimidating when they come in; they become part of our family. On any given day I can name just about everyone in the chairs. I take the time to try to talk to people; I think that’s important.” She is proud of the fact that more than 75%

32

of her clientele are regulars and of all ages. “We appreciate the loyalty of our clients. We’re across from the Heritage Village retirement community and have a lot of clients from there and other senior living developments.” In addition to cuts, color, perms, and shampoo/style blowouts, the salon offers all kinds of hair treatments such as the J Bev Smoothing Realignment System, which is new, and the Brazilian blowout, which is a popular straightening treatment. Her stylists particularly enjoy getting clients ready for special events and creating elegant hairstyles for bridal parties. Three Ways Beautiful also carries a full range of high-quality products for different hair types. “We have Euphoria, which is a pharmaceutical aloe-based brand, and Kevin

Murphy products, which are more botanicals. J Beverly Hills is another botanical as well, so it’s all about lavender and memory resins. These are our three main brands.” Another popular brand you’ll find on the cool display is WOW, a product that helps with humidity with formulas for both curly and straight hair. Others include Oligo and Olaplex. “We sell quality products and I have a 100% guarantee,” says Jacobs. “If you don’t like your product, you can bring it back and get a full refund or exchange it for something different.” Anyone can come in to shop, not just clients. Although Jacobs is a business woman, she says it’s not all about the money. For example, she sometimes doesn’t charge customers who are coming in to have their hair done for funerals, or those who have cancer, or are going through some other difficult situation. And some of her stylists will do the same and provide their services at no charge. “We’re all about the community,” she says. “Anyone who needs a donation, I will do what I can. We’re about taking care of the people who take care of us. We are also a drop off site for the Haymarket Regional Food Pantry.” To schedule an appointment with one of the experienced stylists at Three Ways Beautiful Salon or to pick up a great hair product, visit the salon at 7917 Heritage Village Plaza in Gainesville, or for more information, go to http://www. threewaysbeautifulsalon.com/. And please, mark your calendar for the salon’s customer appreciation day on September 18!

Ghosted Concepts: One Kitchen, Many Menus

STORY AND PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK

The chicken sandwich that started the Ghosted Concepts craze.

Ghosted Concepts was a relatively secret sensation… that is, until the Haymarket restaurant’s Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich put them on the map. Owner and chef, Carmen Sabia, and his wife Stephanie, founded Ghosted Concepts as a pop-up restaurant and virtual kitchen in September 2020. Sometimes they traveled around town with their delicious sandwiches and seasoned fries and cannoli’s, and sometimes they set up under a red tent in front of the QBE building along Washington Street. That location was meant to be because in January of this year, Chef Carmen found a home kitchen inside the building and has been personally delivering pick-up orders to customers in their cars ever since. Born and raised in Chicago, Carmen worked in both the corporate and private restaurant worlds. The last 30 years has allowed him to gain the knowledge and experience of working every aspect of the food business, from fast food to fine dining and everything in between. In 2008, he opened his own restaurant in Arizona, SamBellas, named after his daughters Sam and Isabella. Unfortunately, the economic collapse forced Carmen to close. “It was a very, very difficult time,” he says, of the financial hardship his family endured. When he left the corporate restaurant world in December of 2019, the pandemic hit and again the world seemed to be fighting against him. But this time he knew he had to shift his focus. While in quarantine, the idea behind Ghosted Concepts was born and he began the work of obtaining a license, finding a commercial kitchen, and creating menus and logos. The traveling pop-up was successful, but Carmen knew having access to a permanent

kitchen would allow him to serve more customers as the business grew. The stars aligned and, with the help and support of Miguel Pires of Zandra’s Taqueria, Chef Clarke Congdon of Georgetown Caterers, and Jen Loeffler of QBE and Old School Kitchen, a space was offered to him in the QBE building. “Someone is looking out for me,” says Carmen, and whoever that is has continued to lead him to growth and prosperity. “It took me a long time to get to where I am today, but I am so grateful for those experiences because I've learned so many things and it's helping me now,” says Carmen. This realization and insight is what leads his business philosophy. Ghosted Concepts was a dream, and he is living it out the best way he can. Chef Carmen takes nothing about his

business lightly. There is a reason behind everything he does. When you order from Ghosted Concepts, he delivers your order to your car himself. Why? “Because no one does that,” he says. The kitchen is closed on Sundays. Why? So that he can spend time with his family, especially his three children, when they are not in school. The famous chicken sandwiches are currently $5 and people have asked him how he could sell a sandwich so inexpensively. His response: “Because I can.” Ghosted Concepts is a one-of-a-kind restaurant experience. Carmen believes there are far too many different styles of cuisines in the world to experience just one at a time. Thus the idea behind Ghosted Concepts is to enable customers to enjoy several different cuisines at one time from just one kitchen. “Well made dishes should be experienced and not be taken for granted; they can tell a story or remind you of a place or event,” Carmen said, noting that his food is inspired by his grandfather and his mother but also by the different regions in which he’s lived, including his hometown of Chicago. In the beginning, Carmen says he and his wife Stephanie were working together to spread the word about Ghosted Concepts but that changed quickly. When over 150 new customers explained that their wives sent them to “get one of those sandwiches everyone’s talking about,” Carmen realized Stephanie had a knack for appealing to the masses on social media. That’s been her role ever since and he stays out of it, he says, and concentrates on cooking. “I could not do this without the support of my wife and my family,” Carmen explains. Chef Carmen is one of the most grateful people you will ever meet but he tells it best in his own words. “The community has responded with overwhelming support. I could not have pictured a better place than the town of Haymarket to start out in. They have helped spread the word about Ghosted Concepts and my family and I are so grateful for all of their support, telling their friends and posting on social media.” GHOSTED CONCEPTS Located at the back of 14600 Washington St., Suite 149, Haymarket. Gainesville’s Felicitas Smith joins International Cultural Exchange Services

White’s Ferry remains grounded in Leesburg The Kuhn family planned to put the historic White's Ferry between Leesburg and Poolesville, Maryland back in the water this spring after purchasing the operation in February, but they are facing some procedural delays. Chuck Kuhn, founder and CEO of JK Moving Services, and his wife Stacy Kuhn, bought the ferry in February after it had been shut down in December in a land dispute. The owners of the land where the ferry docked in Virginia, known as Rockland, had complained that White’s Ferry

was unlawfully occupying its land. White’s Ferry argued for its right to use the landing due to having customers and business operations on that side of the river for over two centuries. “We stand ready and willing to reopen. The ferry has ramifications for our local economy and the livelihoods of many people, from technology workers to retail employees to farm workers," the Kuhn family said in a news release. But to restart, the ferry must gain use rights in Virginia. The delay may take up to 10 months, the family said.

International Cultural Exchange Services (ICES) recently welcomed Gainesville resident Felicitas Smith as the organization’s new local coordinator. “I love living in Virginia and have lived here most of my adult life,” said Smith. “I was born and raised in Germany and I am a naturalized US citizen. I was an exchange student in England and France. While raising our three children we hosted students from England and France.” Smith is excited to work with international high school students and the local families that host them and feels that, “Having exchange students in our local schools and communities increases mutual understanding and improves relationships between countries.” She will be working with families and schools in Gainesville and in the surrounding areas. At present, Smith is looking for host families for the 2021 school year. For more information, please contact Felicitas Smith at (571) 214-5811 or fsmith@icesusa.org.

New Prince William schools superintendent earned praise for Chicago work The night that LaTanya McDade, the current chief education officer of Chicago Public Schools, was announced as the next superintendent of Prince William County Public Schools, the praise began pouring in. Superintendents from school divisions in Indianapolis, Baltimore and elsewhere talked about a friend and educator they saw as prepared to take on the job of leading a large school division such as Prince William’s. Talking with the media after her announcement in March, McDade made multiple references to her educational philosophy, starting with individual schools, classrooms and teachers. In particular, she said, when it comes to a diverse school division in a big area like Prince William, it’s crucial to focus not on a general approach but on ensuring each school has the individualized resources it needs.
