ver the last year, the number of children entering the Infant and Toddler Connection of Greater Prince William, a program that provides early intervention support and services to infants and toddlers from birth to age three who are not developing as expected or who have a medical condition that can delay normal development, has risen sharply, said program manager Ginny Heuple. In 2021, intakes were up 26% over 2020, with more than 100 children a month entering the program several times throughout the year. It even became a struggle to assign a provider to eligible children within the typical 30 day deadline. It was a bit overwhelming. But sometimes being overwhelmed isn’t a bad thing. In this case, it signaled the growing realization among parents and pediatricians of the benefits of early intervention. From birth through age 3, a child’s neural connections

develop rapidly, so a little bit of intervention for kids who need it can go a long way. Their developing brains maintain great plasticity which makes it malleable and receptive to input from others. Said Heuple, “Developing ‘good’ habits, meaning solid and ‘typical’ sensorimotor patterns, movements and behaviors, early on is much easier than developing ‘less

desirable habits’ and then trying to change them when the wiring in the brain is becoming less receptive to this input.” And it appears such early intervention works. Historically, more than half of children who receive it do not require special education in schools. No wonder Heuple’s primary goal is to make area families aware of this crucial resource. For a child to be eligible for the program, he or she must fit this criteria: • A diagnosis that may cause delays • A developmental delay of at least 25% in any area of development • Atypical development as determined through an assessment done by the Infant and Toddler Connection The Infant and Toddler Connection utilizes a coaching interaction style that uses everyday routines and situations as opportunities to aid the child’s development. These practices are evidence based, use parents and other adults the child is most comfortable with, and results in a more responsive and interactive learning experience. Whether services are offered via telehealth, in the home, or in community locations, the child is often more relaxed and receptive than in an unfamiliar clinic environment. Speech-language pathologist Andrea Toomey works with children in communities throughout the county. “It’s a unique, intimate experience,'' she says of the connections she makes with families. “You become a part of their family.” Toomey says she sees firsthand how the coaching style leads to the most progress for children, with their caregivers learning from the early intervention staff and then

implementing the techniques with their child. Courtney and Chris Allen of Haymarket were referred by their pediatrician to the Infant and Toddler Connection when their 18-month-old daughter Harper wasn’t expressing herself at an age appropriate level. The Allens admit they were nervous but also encouraged that the program could help kick start Harper’s language and benefit her ability to communicate. The family was connected with Toomey and the intervention began with the first online session. Goal number one was getting to know each other: the family’s daily routines, situations where Harper was struggling to communicate, her likes and favorite things. “Andrea felt like a friend that we had known for some time,” said Courtney, “and she was absolutely great with our daughter even though Harper wasn’t too sure what to think about the whole thing.” The Allens and Toomey worked together with Harper for more than a year, but began to notice a difference within the first two to three months. “Andrea was very patient and she truly listened to us,” said Courtney Toomey helped the Allens use situations in their daily lives as teaching opportunities. One of Harper’s was walking to the mailbox each day. She would get really excited about this simple routine and was encouraged to say mail or mailbox. Courtney and Chris would ask her what she saw around her, and get down on her level so that she could watch their mouths as they spoke specific words that she struggled with. They would also take photos of things she saw and then talk about them later. Repetition plays a huge part in early intervention. Around six months after starting intervention, the service provider will assess the progress that a child has made and determine if the child has met the goals set forth in the beginning. When both the parents and the service provider feel the child has achieved those goals, the child graduates from the program. Toomey and Harper celebrated her graduation in person for the first time at a socially distanced driveway meeting. Beyond Heuple’s primary goal of making area families aware of the Infant and Toddler Connection, is her desire to raise awareness among middle and high school students of career opportunities in the field of early intervention. Early intervention providers include speech therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, hearing and vision impaired specialists, early intervention assistants and more. “It’s important for middle schools and high schools to educate students about these opportunities,” said Heuple. “The field needs more staff to meet the needs of the community.” hg For more information about the Infant and Toddler Connection, visit: disabilitynavigator.org/program/69727/infant-toddlerconnection-prince-william-manassas-and-manassas-park

For Najla Farzam of Haymarket, Her Clients’ Happiness is Everything BY BETH LUNA
|

N
ajla Farzam has had the journey of a lifetime. From her home country of Afghanistan to a home in Haymarket and her own business, Deena Brows in Gainesville, hers is a story of grit and survival. Memories of her upbringing and young adult life include running from war, hiding from bombs, crossing borders, and feeling threatened as a woman at work. “When I was about three, and my siblings were older, I remember the bombing and getting away by crossing borders, just like they are doing now in Ukraine,” said Najla. “I do remember once in the middle of the night my dad was hiding us in a truck telling us not to be loud to stay safe.” She feels a strong bond with the people of Ukraine and what they are experiencing being that her life has mirrored these events. Najla and her husband Mohsen arrived in the United States in 2013 after being sponsored by her older sister in Albany. “I came to this country holding my 20 day-old baby,” she said. “The day I had my visa meeting at the American Embassy in Kabul, I was in labor. I had waited ten years for my visa, so I absolutely had to keep the interview appointment. I was hiding my contractions from my husband!” Their son Benjamin, now eight, was born soon after, and the family spent three months in Albany before her husband accepted a job with a television production company in Virginia. They arrived in Manassas, their first home, with nothing but a sheet and two pillows. Their second baby Deena, now seven, was born, and the family relocated to Haymarket in 2018. Najla was a career woman, college-educated like her parents, and working in marketing for a large airline before becoming a mother and moving to the U.S. “Working in a big company in Afghanistan is scary and dangerous for women,” Najla said. “Anything can happen; they can shoot you, throw poison on your face, kidnap you, anything.” With no family nearby, Najla made the decision to stay home while her children were young. “I wanted to witness their first steps and all of the new things they did,” she said.

Left: “My daughter and I have been going to Deena Brows to get our eyebrows done,” said Ariane Giulajan of Gainesville. “She does an amazing job and is very sweet and welcoming. You will not be disappointed!” Below: One of Najla’s stunning henna creations.
Once the kids were a little older, Najla thought about returning to work. “When you apply for jobs after six or seven years of staying home with kids, you are discriminated against as a mother, a woman.” she said. “I worked on my kids those years and I am proud of them, of myself, and my husband. We did a good job! The kids are nice and have good manners. It’s not easy but we did it.” Najla was certified in threading and henna, and when she surveyed the area and didn’t see those services being offered she was inspired to begin a home business. “I set up in a downstairs room, went to UPS and printed 300 pages with my information, and distributed them at Walmart, Giant, and other local stops.” she said. ‘I was handing flyers to people as the babies were fussing in the cart! Then, my doorbell rang one day, and a lady

just stopped by and asked for threading! She was my first customer!” Sadly, Najla was rejected for a license by the county because the family lived in a townhouse at the time. “I had two choices – get a commercial space or go to my customers, so I stopped because I couldn’t take the babies with me. I had to turn down customers, but they kept calling and texting their love and support.” With her husband’s encouragement she looked for retail space, opening Deena Brows on December 1, 2021. “He saw my passion and said go for it!” she said. “The budget, the store, the help is all because of my husband’s support. There are beauty-based stores for women around my shop, and I love that.” So, what is threading? Threading is an ancient hair removal technique that uses a double strand of thread to remove eyebrow hairs all at once in a very straight, defined line. “It is a very organic way to take hair from the root,” Najla explained. “When you do it consistently, it doesn’t harm the skin. There are no marks or scratches, or wax on the face that stretches and pulls at the skin. I use 100% cotton thread, with nothing chemical.” Threading is generally used on the face, hands, and legs, but most often on the face. Najla uses organic henna from Afghanistan to shape or fill in thinning brows, which colors both the skin under the eyebrow and the hairs for a lasting, full look. Down the line, she plans to add microblading for eyebrows and powder brows. Najla truly loves helping people look their best, and that is her top priority and inspiration. “Two years ago, I had a client who had cancer come to me and ask if I could tint and shape her eyebrows,” she said. “She was so cute and nice, and she had a lot of brow but was plucking them herself. I fixed, tinted, and shaped, and then made her promise not to touch! She was so happy, and she looked amazing when she left. The smile on her face was everything to me. When you start a business you focus on the financial side, but for me, the happiness I see gives me more energy. I am more worried about how my clients leave my salon than money.” For Najla and her family, building a life and connecting with the community is very important. “I want to say that as an Afghan woman, it’s not easy to come to a new country to start your life with nothing when you come from a house full of everything. We left home in a bad situation and left all of our possessions behind. But we had each other and that was everything. I am proud of myself, my family, and my clients. I am very happy here!” hg For more information, visit deenabrows.com

DADS!
Let’s give them a day to remember
Josh and his wife Erica with their three sons, Micah, Miles, and Mason.
Josh Tredinnick J TRED WOODWORKING HOMETOWN: BRISTOW
BY SUE BALDANI
Here’s to the hard-working, loving and supportive Dads out there. Being a father isn’t always fun, and there may be some challenges along the way, but it’s also a role filled with pride and joy. Whether raising sons or daughters, each child is different and none comes with an instruction manual. Dads often need to be many things to their kids - sometimes pals, other times disciplinarians, often teachers, and most of all, pillars of strength and love.
If you could spend Father's Day doing anything you like, what would it be? I would spend it working in the garage with my family. I truly enjoy getting to teach my boys certain aspects of woodworking. I think that the skills they learn in the shop can help them throughout their lives with work ethic, problem solving, and basic knowledge.
Here, a few local men tell us about their favorite ways to spend this day dedicated just to them, or relate their most memorable Father’s Day. We wish all fathers - those busy raising their own children and those who are selfless enough to raise others - a very Happy Father’s Day.

Tell us about one of your most memorable Father's Days.
If you could spend Father's Day doing anything you like, what would it be?
On Father’s Day during my surgery training in Houston, I walked into a 7-Eleven store and found myself in the middle of an armed robbery. The gunman put his pistol up to my head and said, “Give me your wallet, Doc!” I did and slowly slid to the back of the store behind a big stack of Doritos for safety. No one was hurt, but that day I happened to be Houston’s “on call” chief trauma surgeon. So, if I happened to take a bullet on that Father’s Day, my pager would have alerted me to operate on myself to save my own life!
Since I consider myself an above average grill master, I would have the kids over while I cook and to play games. I also love photography so there would be lots of pictures as well. My family is currently spread out all over the country so it can be difficult to get us all together. As President/Founder of a nonprofit organization that mentors young men, I'm sort of a father figure to many people so I’d also like to spend time with the mentors or mentees during Father's Day weekend.

If you could spend Father's Day doing anything you like, what would it be? If I could spend Father’s Day doing anything I would like, it would be enjoying an intimate camping trip with my two amazing sons. COVID was a harsh reminder that life is short. Being intentional about taking advantage of the time that we have now is indispensable. I was honored with fatherhood nearly three decades ago; however, it seems like it was just yesterday when I received the news. It’s hard to believe that so much time has transpired. So, my Father’s Day would reflect the many joys that fatherhood has represented for me over the years.

welcoming, family-friendly horse option in the area. The two-barn, 18-stall facility which features an all-weather and lit riding arena, is located two miles off Vint Hill Road and straddles county lines – the farm is in Fauquier, and the home she shares with her eight-year-old son Liam is in Prince William. A Haymarket native and graduate of Battlefield High School, Amanda has worked in the mental health field in different capacities, focusing on teens from ages 11-17, and also working for two years at the Virginia State Psychiatric Hospital. “My long-term goal is to eventually combine my love for horses and my work with kids in the mental health field,” she shared. “I would like to have a facility that offers programs for kids that are struggling with mental health, depression, and anxiety.” Amanda currently works with Discovery Mood & Anxiety Program, which is based in California but has residential houses in Northern Virginia. “The kids come out to Bay Ridge once a month. I have yet to meet a kid that absolutely didn’t want to visit – every child has been very open and excited to pet, hold, and

Currently, Amanda has three students interested in showing and jumping that participated in their first show in late May. “We are primarily a hunter/jumper barn, but I truly focus on students of all ages, from children to adults,” she said. “We start at the beginning of horse care by learning how to groom and tack up (how to outfit the horse with the bridle, saddle pad, and saddle). There is a daily riding lesson, a craft, time to learn the anatomy of a horse, saddle, tack, grooming, barn cleaning skills like cleaning buckets and stalls properly, and all-around daily horse care.” Participants witness the day-in and day-out happenings on the farm, including how the farrier works with the horses’ feet. “On the last day of camp, the kids show

their parents what they have learned.” This year camp will run July 25-29 and is offered to kids seven years old and up. The cost per camper is $380 for the week. “Show barns can be a little uppity – I grew up with that,” Amanda commented. “I want people to enjoy why we love horses and have fun in a family environment. Of course, there are rules – like kids are not allowed in the horse fields – so we can maintain safety at the farm. There are barns that don’t allow children and we want to be all-inclusive.” Most of all, as she grows the business with an eye on the future of Bay Ridge, Amanda’s goal is to bring all types of people together for the love of horses. “My hope is that Bay Ridge will offer people new beginnings and be a welcoming atmosphere for anyone, of any level.” hg For additional information, visit Bayridgeequestrian.org. Tunes for Tuition Join this duo for a summer of great songs and entertainment BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOS BY LUKE CHRISTOPHER

A
s roommates at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Jackson Ledbetter and Shane Brady, both of Haymarket, share a love of music and performing. This summer, they will be taking this passion on the road with their Tuition is Due 2022 summer tour. At the age of 15, Ledbetter, along with Sophia Mariana, started Mercury Avenue, which was voted the Best Musician/Band in the Best of Prince William's 2019 list and the Best of Haymarket/ Gainesville Lifestyle magazine 2019 as well. “Those were very, very big honors,” he says. With Shane & Jackson, he’s hoping to duplicate this success. “This summer will be the first time I’ll be performing with another person,” says Brady. “Before coming to Berklee, it was just me and my guitar. I was doing solo stuff - acoustic performances at local breweries and wineries.” Although they went to Battlefield High School in Haymarket together, each was busy playing their own gigs and didn’t really get to know each other well during school. “The first time I saw Shane perform was at the Battlefield Open Mic Nights with Events @4410

at the Contemporary Music Center in Haymarket, and I thought, ‘Oh wow, this guy is really, really good, and he's in my grade too at my school, which is really cool.’ We both did the rock camps at the Center, so that’s where we really met, and I would love to give a shout out to Menzie Pittman, the owner of Contemporary Music Center, for what he does.” Ledbetter plays the drums, while Brady plays the guitar and sings. The two will be performing mostly cover songs of classic favorites from many different genres and eras. “We’ll do some country music, old folk, R&B, songs from the Beatles, Prince, and Stevie Wonder – that sort of vibe,” says Brady. Ledbetter draws inspiration from many artists and listens to all types of music, from rap to country to film scores. Brady has eclectic tastes as well. “It depends on the day,” he says. “I go through phases when listening to music, but when it comes to playing, I like to daydream about how I want to feel when I'm on stage or when I'm in front of people. I may want to sing like Stevie Wonder or wish I could look as good as Prince on stage or pull heart strings like Bob Dylan. But in the end,

the ultimate goal is to just be a servant to songs by other people as well as my own songs.” Brady hopes to perform some of his original music while on tour too. During the summer, the duo is booked almost every weekend, mostly at local places in the Haymarket/Gainesville area. “It's fairly constant,” says Ledbetter. “Sometimes we’ll be playing on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.” Their initial two gigs are actually very local to Haymarket. “First is Giuseppe's [Ristorante Italiano] and then our second is Farm Brew Live at 2 Silos Brewing Company,” he says. “We're playing all over Northern Virginia including in Winchester, and one of our gigs is at a new beer garden in Tysons Corner. Another is playing in the VIP lounge for a Jiffy Lube Live concert in June.” Jiffy Lube Live is an outdoor amphitheater in Bristow. Ledbetter’s father, Larry, who serves as the band’s manager in his spare time, set up all these gigs for them. “He still has all the contacts from when he put together gigs for Mercury Avenue,” says Ledbetter. “He’s fairly well acquainted with who to contact and where the places are that we can play. So, he just sent out some email blasts and sent some videos of us playing up here in Boston.” Even though both teens have been performing for years, they still get nervous when first stepping onto the stage. “I'm always nervous and I always will be,” says Brady. “I don't think anything is going to change that, but I think it's not about whether or not you're nervous, it’s about whether or not you can
“It’s so hard not to be nervous when you play music because every second that you’re up there counts,” said Ledbetter, shown here with Brady at their May performance at theYARD at Farm Brew Live.

act like you’re not. “Over these past few years of performing, I think both of us have developed some pretty good skills when it comes to just pretending and once you get into it, once you get into the groove and you see smiles on people's faces, you don't feel as scared. It's just about getting over that first little hump and then afterwards you can just totally be yourself and play to your heart's desire.” He feels that playing music should never be totally comfortable. “There always has to be that element of surprise, some sort of change in rhythm or a little riff to add some flavor. So, all the things come together that make each tune and each time you play the tune special in its own way.” Adds Ledbetter, “It's so hard not to be nervous when you play music because every second that you're up there counts. It's impossible to have a perfect performance every time, but that's kind of what you have to strive for. And like Shane says, you're always nervous, but you can't really show it. “We both love music so much. We've decided to go to college for it and do it professionally, and we're really, really excited for this summer and for each one of these special gigs.” Ledbetter, 19 and Brady, 18, plan to graduate from The Berklee College of Music in 2025 and continue making music, entertaining crowds and making people smile. hg To find out more and to view their entire Tuition is Due 2022 tour schedule, check out their Facebook page @shaneandjackson.

T
he story of three Battlefield High School senior football players is a bit of a play on alliteration: Reagan, regionals, respect. It’s a look at the team’s regardful Defensive Back Dominic Taylor, resolute Defensive End Wesley Williams, and resilient Quarterback Jonathan Isaiah Walters. It’s also about a team that transcended changes, one that played for the coaches but ultimately played for each other.
It starts at Reagan
All three boys played other sports before–lacrosse, soccer, basketball–but chose football when the time came. Dom and Wes made Reagan Middle School’s football team in sixth grade and Isaiah joined in seventh grade. Finishing out their middle school football run, their team won regionals in eighth grade. Battlefield’s football team of seniors is built on the same group of kids who plowed their way to an undefeated season at Reagan. The boys give credit where it’s due, such as to their previous coach, Scott Girolmo. “Coach G. set us up well with having to adapt and pick up new things,” said Dom. “All the stuff he had given us in a short time helped us better adapt and learn a new system quicker.” Battlefield coach Greg Hatfield is actually their third coach throughout their high school career. Dom’s mom Wendy Taylor said, “They had to rely on each other because that was the dynamic that has existed all along,” Dom’s mother, Wendy Taylor. “Their team is a team because of the bond they built since middle school.”
Adversity along the way
Anytime they get robbed from playing the game is a struggle, with Isaiah noting the injuries and setbacks. In the second game of their junior year season, Dom tore his labrum–calling for surgery and a four-month recovery. It’s those moments that show how the game isn’t just about football. “I’m sure they don’t love every time that
they’re practicing in the heat,” said Wendy, “but each one of those is building something: character, confidence, stamina.” “You have to be able to motivate yourself when others can’t,” Isaiah said, but also added, “We all push each other to keep going and not give up.” “Wes would run out for the last 100 if a kid was struggling and run him down to the end of the finish line,” said Dom. It’s about dedication as much as innovation. “With Dom and I not being gifted with height,” Isaiah laughed, “we had to find different ways.” Wes lives by the Bruce Lee quote, “Do not pray for an easy life; pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.” He knows everyone’s path will not be easy, saying, “it’s going to take you through peaks and valleys. We worked hard, we had tough moments, but we persevered, came through, and bonded as a team.” Isaiah didn’t skip a beat when he added, “Even if your possibilities seem slim, never give up.”
A grinder’s game
The boys play in a way that reflects who they are. “Dom always ends up in the right place. Wesley catches everybody’s attention. Isaiah is methodical,” Hatfield summarized. It makes sense beyond the field. Dom is an advocate for finding your way as you are. “Everybody has their own path for getting where they want to be,” he said. Wes is a leader, purposeful with his words and wise enough to know when there’s something to add. Isaiah is inquisitive and gets to know those around him–he was one of the first players to find out that Hatfield would be the new coach before it was announced and did his research accordingly. “Football is inherently a grinder’s game,” said Wes. “Maybe you don’t get that starting spot that you wanted or your body hurts in ways that you’ve never felt before, but you

men exemplify that,” Hatfield said.
It ends with regionals
“The Freedom game… that was something,” Isaiah mused about the playoff game where they won regionals. “The energy and the way that our whole team played,” said Dom. “That was a moment where we all realized how good we are and how good we can be.” The boys and their families are thankful for the coaches, teachers, and adults who invested in, encouraged, and inspired them along the way. They enjoy giving back what they received when they talk to kids in the same youth programs they played in. “The people that we got paired with–I think we got lucky,” Dom said. They are fulfilled by thriving in both football and academics. “You have to work in the classroom, you have to work on the field,” Dom noted. Wes was fresh off the Franklin D. Watkins Memorial Award night as a finalist when we spoke. On the off chance that they’re not living and breathing football, the boys are being boys–playing games, messing around with SplatRball guns, and driving around the area. “[Wes] considers the guys on his football team an extension of his family. As much as he loves the sport of football, a big part of why he loves it so much is the comradery and the interdependence,” said Wes’s mom, Paula Williams. Dom recalled team dinners after games and practices as part of family time. “I’m going to miss the great memories we’ve shared,” Isaiah said.

have to push through the grind because on the other side of that is the beauty and the euphoria that you feel when you succeed– not necessarily in a win but [when] you know you’ve grown as a person.” Grow is what they’ve done, separately and together. “You take these people who are from different places but when you work so hard for a common goal, the love that you build for one another is incredible and these young

Coach Greg Hatfield said he’s excited to see what these three young men do. “I think they all have a chance at being successful for different reasons but for the same reason that they have high expectations for themselves. They understand that they have to work to get it done,” he said. Isaiah is committed to the US Naval Academy, Dom to Shepherd, and Wesley to Duke. “It’s a new door that’s opened to me and I can’t wait to see what’s behind it,” Isaiah said, also thinking ahead to his aspiration that his future family will be able to pursue their dreams the way he could. No matter what the future holds, Wes put it perfectly: “I’m hungry for the opportunity to be the best at whatever I do.” hg

Bored during the lockdown, Jack Bresnahan created the Gainesville Blitzball League STORY AND PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK
A
s a kid, Jack Bresnahan of Gainesvile was the self-designated Master of Ceremonies for his family. As the MC, he would host contests, often leading the group in American Ninja Warrior-style challenges or a Jeopardy board trivia game with post-it notes. So watching him create and build a Blitzball league during a pandemic was not surprising at all for those who know and love him. In 2016, while watching baseball videos on YouTube, Jack took notice of Blitzball content. He made some mental notes and began to experiment with the sport in his driveway with a few friends. As a baseball player, the similarities between the two sports was intriguing. Four years later, during the lockdown that left him and his friends bored and missing their usual sports, he thought he’d simply get some people together safely in the outdoors and take the blitzball thing up a notch. “With Covid as the catalyst, it brought everyone together,” says Jack. The appeal was partly fresh air, partly sports, and mostly socializing. In the very early stages, it involved just Jack, his sister, and a few friends. They were all playing casually but the more they recorded and posted their games on YouTube, awareness began to build. When Jack mentioned a possible trophy for playoffs, the game started to mean something. The competitive aspect shifted. All this time practicing and playing in the driveway served as a stepping stone between playing for fun and becoming the competitive Gainesville Blitzball League that exists today. Some of the first and original leagues of this unique sport set the path towards what is now known as the Gainesville Blitzball League. These teams, like the Blitzball

Bombers, were just up and coming. Five years later, it all would come full circle when Jack’s team played against the teams he watched as a kid. In January of 2022, the Gainesville Blitzball League was invited to the Givens Back 5th Annual Blitzball Tournament in Tampa, Florida. This event, hosted by professional baseball player Michael Givens, included 12 teams and the GVBL made the top 8 bracket. “It was so nice to have new competition; that made it really exciting,” says Jack. “All the players are invested in the sport; they take the drafts seriously; they take it all seriously,” says Jack. In the Gainesville league that includes 32 players, the youngest player is 16 and the oldest is 20. Everyone pressures each other to be better, all while genuinely enjoying the game. Jack explains that, in addition to the fact that it is really

fun, the backyard, homespun element is what makes Blitzball so appealing. Each player gets a lot of playing time, which can be different from recreational sports. Teams are condensed and pitchers get consistent pitching time. In the field, there is a pitcher and only three other players. The angle of the field is around 60 degrees, while a baseball diamond is 90. This makes it more difficult to hit into the field, yet easier to get to the bases as they are closer together. One aspect of the game that is most enjoyable to Jack is the movement of the ball. While a baseball moves through the air because of its seams, the blitzball’s outer shell is made of pentagons and hexagons. The blitzball is a middle ground between a baseball and a wiffle ball. It is lighter and more susceptible to movement, and more fun to grip and spin as you pitch. Jack even finds that this sport has contributed to his pitching skills, because the repetitive throwing action transfers to baseball. Jack sees Blitzball being a part of his future for sure, although he may need to step back a little when he starts at James Madison University in the Fall. But he hopes the game will continue to catch on in the community and that others will help the league succeed and grow. “It’s a really, really fun sport and it’s honestly at the point where it is at its steepest incline in growth,” says Jack. “As long as people keep showing up,” says Jack, “the Gainesville Blitzball League is only going to get bigger.” hg

Left: For the blitzball league, players represent 6 major league baseball teams. From left to right, David Drzewicki is on the Padres, Luke James, Jack Bresnahan, and Aedan Sanders are on the Pirates, and Spencer Cates is on the Dodgers. This photo was taken at the season All-Star game, which they played in honor and support of Ryland Harris. Right: Initially, Bresnahan used blitzball as an excuse to work on his pitching.
Blitzball is an amped-up version of whiffle ball, but it’s much more interesting in that the ball is designed to allow pitchers of all skill levels to pitch curveballs, sinkers, and sliders. Leagues have been springing up around the country in recent years, primarily dominated by teens and twenty-somethings. I don’t really know how or when my son first became aware of the sport of Blitzball, but he started playing with just a handful of guys from the neighborhood in the driveway, in large part to perfect his pitching and get a handle on how best to refine play of the game. Back in around 2018, his league began to grow, but it was mostly recreational play in the form of pickup games, and again, another excuse to work on his pitching. As he continued to put players and teams together to play informally, he created a YouTube channel that documented the matchups. He would commentate the games and interview players including the “player of the game” for post-game commentary. Fast forward to 2020, when he started getting more guys together who needed an outlet – something to do in their new world of virtual school and virtual everything. He now has over 30 players representing 6 Major League Baseball teams, including players from several area high schools and three counties. Jack has leveraged natural leaderships skills, love of rules and officiating games, and created the only known teen Blitzball league in Northern Virginia. The players are genuinely invested in the league and Jack involves all of them in discussions of how they can improve the league for future seasons. While his “passion pastime” might not be considered a community service in a strict sense, several parents have approached me to tell me how grateful they were that their sons were involved in the league, that they were getting outside, and getting fresh air and exercise. The parents were quite surprised at how organized and professionally run the league has been. One parent recently joked with me that Jack’s on his way to becoming Commissioner of Major League Baseball! GVBL has received sponsorships from the official Blitzball organization, which has supplied them with free game gear, and from Long Ball Licorice, who has sent Jack free product which he talks about on his channel. In his spare time outside of school, where he is a member of the National Honor Society and a participant in the Cambridge Programme, Jack plays baseball and umps for two local baseball leagues. He loves it, and he absolutely loves umping games with the younger players.
