I
’m writing this letter at my dining room table which is covered in a huge plastic drop cloth. My husband is on a ladder painting the ceiling which, at present, is a very, very dark green. We’d like it to be white which means two coats of primer and, possibly, two coats of white paint. The moldings have been taped off, there are drop cloths covering the floor, and there are paint cans, brushes, pans, and rags for spills (which happen when I help), everywhere. With the exception of the table and the chair I’m sitting on, everything has been removed from the room and piled into the den. It’s a mess and it’s making me crazy. It’s also just one room and I simply can’t imagine how people cope with major remodeling projects. I know I couldn’t. If our place required that much renovation, I’d sooner get a realtor and go house hunting. But that’s just me. Of course whether you choose to buy a new house or remodel the one you’re in, minimizing the stress inherent to either option comes down to working with the right people and maintaining the right frame of mind. At least that’s what our pros – Dawn Arruda, Patti Brown, Tim Burch, Valerie Gibson, Kim Jenkins, Stephanie Kennedy, Dan Royce, and Lesley Salman – told us (among other things) when we interviewed them for “Buy or Renovate? That is the Question” (page 16). If you’re considering a renovation or putting your house on the market, don’t miss their expert advice, tips, and suggestions. Cheers!

Nonfiction Versus Fiction: Is There Really Any Contest?
A
BY JESSICA SCALPH
s librarians, we are asked all the time, “What should I read next?” Recently, I facilitated a book talk at the Gainesville Haymarket Rotary Club, and the main topic was reading nonfiction versus fiction. Why is it a great idea to read both and why is there so much controversy over which is “best” to read? I did a bit of research in our digital library and came up with an article, “The Case for Reading Fiction'' by Christine Seifert. Its main point is that if you are a business owner and would prefer excellent managers, there is a case to be made for encouraging them to read fiction in addition to nonfiction. “Research suggests that reading literary fiction is an effective way to enhance the brain’s ability to keep an open mind while processing information,” says Seifert, “which is a necessary skill for effective decision making.” With this in mind, I thought I’d suggest some pairings of the two genres.
PA I RI NG #1: Read a nonfiction and fiction book by the same author.
A View from the Cheap Seats by Neil Gaiman (nonfiction) More than sixty pieces of Gaiman’s outstanding nonfiction. Analytical yet playful, erudite yet accessible, this cornucopia explores a broad range of interests and topics, including, but not limited to; authors past and present; music; storytelling; comics; bookshops; libraries; ghosts… The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman (fiction) A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. Although the house he lived in is long gone, he is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, her mother and grandmother.
PA I RI NG #2: Read a history nonfiction book and historical fiction from the same historical period.
The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson (nonfiction). Subject: World War II A fresh and compelling portrait of Winston Churchill and London during the Blitz. On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister Hitler invaded Holland and
8
Belgium… and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. It was up to Churchill to hold the country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally. The Night Portrait by Laura Morelli (fiction). Subject: World War II Munich, WWII: After a conservator unwittingly places a priceless Italian Renaissance portrait into the hands of a high-ranking Nazi leader, she risks her life to recover it, working with an American soldier to get it back. PAIRING #3: Read a nonfiction and fiction book related to a similar subject or theme.
The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson (nonfiction). Subject: Racial Migration Wilkerson chronicles one of the great untold stories of American history: the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled the south for northern and western cities, in search of a better life. This exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Twelve Tribes of Hattie by Ayana Mathis (fiction). Subject: Racial Migration In 1923, fifteen-year-old Hattie Shepherd, swept up by the tides of the Great Migration, flees Georgia and

heads north. Full of hope, she settles in Philadelphia to build a better life. PAIRING #4: Read a true crime book (nonfiction) and a murder mystery (fiction).
American Predator: The Hunt for the Most Meticulous Serial Killer of the 21st Century by Maureen Callahan (nonfiction) A deep dive into the twisted life of Israel Keyes. Serial killers often commit their crimes close to home, inside a comfort zone, but as the author documents in this compelling narrative, little about Keyes fit the conventional serial-killer mold. The Mermaids Singing by Val McDermid (fiction) The bodies of four men have been discovered. Enlisted to investigate is criminal psychologist Tony Hill. Even for a seasoned professional, the series of mutilation sex murders is unlike anything he's encountered before. All of these titles are available at Prince William Public Libraries. Is it safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women to get the COVID-19 vaccine?
Dr. Elizabeth Lavery receives Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine at the Prince William Medical Center team member vaccine clinic.
W
ith the COVID-19 vaccines rolling out across the country, many women are wondering if it’s safe to receive the vaccine if they are pregnant or breastfeeding. “We would love to vaccinate all people against COVID-19,” said Elizabeth Lavery, MD, an obstetrician/gynecologist at Novant Health UVA Health System Lake Manassas OB/GYN. “But, with the lack of studies on the effects for pregnant women, it can be difficult for a mother to decide whether to receive the vaccine.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says pregnant women are at an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 and may choose to get the vaccine when it’s available to them. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists also recommends that COVID-19 vaccines should not
10
be withheld from pregnant individuals who meet criteria for vaccination based on the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices-recommended priority groups. Below, Dr. Lavery answers questions about the safety of the COVID-19 vaccine and shares her experience as a breastfeeding mother who recently received both doses.
local expert THE EXPERT:
Elizabeth Lavery, MD HER EXPERTISE:
Obstetrics and Gynecology
What types of vaccine are being used?
The current COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna are both messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines. Unlike other vaccines that release a weakened or dormant dose of the virus, mRNA vaccines emit a message to our bodies with instructions on how to fight against and prevent contraction of the virus. mRNA vaccines teach your cells how to make a protein that triggers an immune response allowing your body to fight the COVID-19 virus. This immune response is similar to a natural infection against COVID-19, but mRNA vaccines cannot cause you to contract COVID-19 merely from receiving both doses.
Are mRNA vaccines new?
No, they’ve been working on this technology for about 10 years. I think it’s reassuring that the mRNA component of the vaccine - the instructions for your body to make the protein that will be used to create antibodies - will only be in your body about two days. So, it's unlikely that it would cause long-term side effects in anyone.
So the thinking is that mRNA vaccines are safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women?
With the way mRNA vaccines work, we don't anticipate the vaccine harming a developing baby and it shouldn't pass into breast milk, either. Our hope is that as the mom makes antibodies, part of that immunity will pass to the baby and provide it some protection. But, if a woman is pregnant and has any questions about it, I recommend she talk to her doctor.
You are a breastfeeding mother and you received both doses of the vaccine. What was your

experience, and how are you feeling now?
Knowing what I know about how medications pass into the breast milk, I was not concerned about my son being negatively affected. I received my first dose of the Pfizer vaccine in December and my second dose in January. I had some expected effects after the second dose and did not feel well for about a day, but now I’m simply relieved because I know I did my part to help bring the pandemic to an end and get my community back to normal.
What is your advice to patients who are wary of the COVID-19 vaccines?
It is important to talk to your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns. People also need to make sure that any information they’re getting about the vaccine is from reliable and scientific sources. The CDC website (cdc.gov) has some good information about the vaccine and the technology of mRNA vaccines that I think is really helpful. ❖

DESIGN 101:
clients’ audience without using any of your marketing budget.
If you build it...
BY YARON LINETT Opening an events venue, updating your office,
relocating your restaurant? This month we answer questions regarding considerations for commercial spaces.
local expert THE EXPERT:
Yaron Linett
HIS EXPERTISE:
Interior Design
Yaron Linett is the principal designer of Formal Traditional, a full-service design firm located in Northern Virginia. To submit your interior design questions, drop him a note at yaron@formaltraditional. com or visit www. formaltraditional.com.
WE ARE LOOKING TO OPEN A NEW EVENTS VENUE AND THINK WE HAVE IT MOSTLY FIGURED OUT. WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE THING THAT PEOPLE DON’T KNOW THEY NEED TO CONSIDER? Hands down, acoustics. Lighting, temperature, floor plan, these are all things that can be adjusted with any number of effective solutions. But if your space has inappropriate acoustics, prepare for significant headaches. A consultation with an acoustical engineer now could save you a tremendous amount down the road. Did you know there are companies who specifically help plan for future musical performances? They can even help you secure the appropriate licenses. And yes, there are different licenses needed for recorded versus live music. PRO TIP
IS THERE ANYTHING WE NEED TO CONSIDER WITH LIGHTING OTHER THAN MAKING SURE WE HAVE ENOUGH? Absolutely, making sure you don’t have too much. Light control is a very important issue, especially when you have a space that will be used over the course of a day. Consider where the sun will shine throughout the day. Is there a space which will be occupied and a rising or setting sun will disturb the individuals using it? In the same vain, are there privacy or security
14
{ MARCH 2021 | HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE }
concerns that call for the view to be blocked? Allowing patrons to PRO control the window TIP treatments is a popular solution in some establishments, but always consider safety. Loose cords pose a significant strangulation hazard. Tethered cords are better but cordless operation is the preference.
WHAT INNOVATIONS IN THE WORLD OF COMMERCIAL DESIGN SHOULD WE CONSIDER ADDING TO OUR PROJECT? While there are all sorts of interactive technology and expensive goodies out there, a very low cost and easy addition is simply adding charging stations or USB outlets. Not only will your clientele appreciate them, but it saves you from the problems associated with folks surreptitiously unplugging other items to use the outlet. People are going to take photos in your establishment, so think about designing a specific “selfie spot” for them to use. Adding your logo and hashtag in the background will help spread your information to your PRO TIP
WHAT DOES IT MAKE SENSE TO SPEND MORE ON INITIALLY? Our go to answer is typically flooring and furniture, but realistically you need to think about the cost to repair or replace any given item. We have had clients purchase bolts of extra fabric, rolls of additional wallpaper, a handful of spare chairs, all because they couldn’t afford the downtime to repair without a spare or because replacing one could mean every other one had to be replaced concurrently. Even chandeliers may be worth having an extra in the back for emergencies. While we rarely recommend carpet outside of certain hospitality settings for those establishments where it is appropriate, consider carpet tiles in particularly high traffic areas. While not our favorite, it is easy to have a whole stack sitting in a closet ready to pop into place when they’re needed. PRO TIP
WE WERE PLANNING ON USING GREY AND WHITE AS OUR COLOR SCHEME, WILL WE HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT LOOKING DATED? Nothing lasts forever, and grey and white is without a doubt on the decline in design circles. However, color psychology is about much more than simply color trends. You should carefully consider your branding, cleanability, lighting, and how refraction will make the goods or individuals in the space look. Don’t underestimate the power of green walls to make otherwise perfectly fresh meat take on a sickly pallor in your deli or pink walls to make skin look healthier in a dressing room. Visibility is an enormous consideration. Contrast and certain colors can aid visually impaired individuals, busy patterns and other color combinations can greatly increase the risk of injury in a portion of the population. Safety first. ❖ PRO TIP

Buy or Renovate? That is the Question
It’s March and you know what that means: it’s the start of the home buying/selling season. With that in mind, we asked several local pros about the decisions that go into buying a new home or renovating an existing one. Their answers, all timely and thought-provoking, are sure to help those of you considering whether to buy or remodel right now. What are the advantages and disadvantages of buying/ building a home versus renovating your existing home? Our panelists had a lot to say on this subject and the pros and cons they provided are all important considerations: Dawn Arruda (DA): If you have the time and budget to wait out a new build, you can get more of what you’re looking for without the disruption of renovating. If you renovate, you’re adding value to an investment you may already have lots of equity in. Patti Brown (PB): Remodeling affords you the opportunity to tailor the renovations to meet your exact needs but buying a new home may allow you to find just what you're looking for. Tim Burch (TB): The advantages of buying a new home is that it’s complete and you can move right in. Moving costs, of course, can be a disadvantage. By remodeling, you get to keep the same location, school districts and friends/neighbors and it can be less costly than buying a new home. The disadvantage is having to live through the renovation.

Valerie Gibson (VG): Before renovating, take these things into consideration: how much you paid for the home; how long you plan to live in it; what needs to be updated, upgraded, or customized now; what will need updating in the future; what can you realistically budget for each project. If the numbers don’t add up, buying a new home may be the best route. Just bear in mind that even buying something new doesn’t mean you won’t have elements you’ll need or want to change. Kim Jenkins (KJ): An advantage to buying a turnkey home is not having the inconvenience of workers in your space disrupting your routine. However, if you’re set on having your home exactly how you want it, then the disruption is worth it. Stephanie Kennedy (SK): Building a new, custom home gives you the ability to have it tailored specifically to your needs, tastes, and lifestyle. With renovating, there’s less total investment and planning is easier. Dan Royce (DS): If you’d like to move to a highly desirable neighborhood, buying a home is advantageous. Of course it still might require

renovations and moving is a hassle. If you remodel and add upgrades to what you already have, you’re increasing the value of your home. Lesley Salman (LS): Buying a new home means not having to deal with contractors and endure renovations. Renovating a home means not having to deal with the inconvenience of showing your home or packing.
Among homeowners who decide to renovate, what are the top three renovations they undertake?
All of our respondents specified kitchens and bathrooms as the top two improvements homeowners make when renovating. As for the third, their responses varied but all reflect, to one degree or another, the impact the pandemic has had on our lives: DA: Outside spaces. These have made a big jump in popularity this year. PB: Creating more of an open concept, particularly when working with an older home. TB: In-law suite remodels. VG: Decks, as we’re spending much more time outdoors. KJ: Covered decks, sunrooms, and screened in porches. SK: Main level master suite additions. DR: Flooring. LS: Finishing the basement.
Among homeowners who decide to buy/build a new/different house, what are the top three reasons for doing so?
Almost all of our pros specified downsizing, upsizing, or a desire to change location as the top three reasons homeowners choose to buy a new/different home. Several also shared a few additional and timely considerations: DA: Desire to live closer to family because of the pandemic. TB: Desire for a different style of home, i.e., farmhouse, contemporary, etc. VG: Combining households and having family members, such as parents, move in, is a major factor. KJ: The cost of the renovation would be as much or more than purchasing a new/ different house. SK: Building a custom home means clients can take the opportunity to incorporate elements of universal design (aging in place design), such as eliminating steps and widening hallways, and lower their monthly operating costs by incorporating new

technology and increased energy efficiency. DR: Job change. Even with lots of folks working from home, some still have to be on site. LS: Many people feel renovating is just too huge a project to undertake and they don’t want the headaches.
What are the top three types of projects homeowners tend to address/fix prior to putting their home on the market? What is the number one project you feel they should address but don’t always?
Ninety-nine percent of our panelists cited painting as the number one project homeowners tackle prior to putting their home on the market. As for projects two and three, those include deep cleaning, power washing, refinishing floors, and replacing/ refinishing the front door. As for the project they wish homeowners would address, again, their responses varied: DA: I think that homeowners should pay attention to the items that could be found during a home inspection. You’d be amazed at how different a utility room looks when the furnace is cleaned up and the hot water heater is wiped down and the intake vents are cleaned. PB: Depersonalizing and decluttering the entire interior is crucial in allowing a prospective buyer to see themselves in the space. TB: A kitchen remodel. Often a remodeled kitchen is the difference between a home selling quickly or sitting on the market for a while.
{ MARCH 2021 | HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE }
KJ: A bathroom remodel. It can increase the value of the home and more than 60% of it can be recouped. VG: It would be helpful if more homeowners addressed their decks. They’re among the most flagged elements on home inspection reports. LS: It would be nice if the major components - roof, HVAC, hot water heater, etc. - were addressed, and even better if they were maintained along the way, but the focus is typically on the cosmetics.
What are the top three appliances those who renovate invest in? What are the top three types of appliances people who are selling a home invest in?
Dawn Arruda’s response to this question summed up the sentiments of all of our participants. “Whether you’re selling or renovating,” she replied, “the top three appliances are kitchen appliances.” Specifically refrigerators, dishwashers, and ranges. Among those who renovate, our pros tell us that these are a few of their other must-haves: TB: An additional refrigerator, freezer, and a built-in coffee maker. VG: Refrigerators with French doors, double ovens, and steam ovens. KJ: Wine refrigerators.
Because we just had to know: In your opinion, what’s more stressful, moving or remodeling? DA: Whether you’re renovating or moving, you need to be prepared to make adjustments. TB: Both are stressful. I think the answer depends upon the performance of the professionals you’re working with. VG: Neither are stress-free life events, but when remodeling is done right, it’s definitely more fun and exciting in my opinion. KJ: That's a toss-up! With either route, there’s a lot of sacrifice and you need to realize your routine will be disrupted. SK: Most would probably say that living through an extensive remodel is more stressful than moving. DR: Moving is hands down more stressful. As long as you have the right contractor, remodeling can be done room by room with little downtime. LS: Remodeling, but only because I have less experience with it so I’m not as comfortable. ❖

Exploring nature in your yard, for fun and health BY PAM OWEN
20
{ MARCH 2021 | HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE }
ith the spring practically upon us, now is a good time to step outside and enjoy the natural world and the health benefits it offers. Even in the smallest yards, nature is there. An amazing number of species can live there, each with a story to tell. In my yard, I’ve witnessed romance, warfare, friendship, intrigue and much more among species that live far more interesting and complex lives that we might think. I try to keep an open mind when observing nature and use all my senses, including touch, although I avoid contact with many species, particularly animals, because it can be dangerous — for us and for them. I’ve had some of my most thought-provoking critter encounters while just sitting on my deck. If I’m quiet and patient, many animals adjust to my presence and go about their daily routine, often coming quite close. Last spring, a Louisiana waterthrush that I’d strain to see high in trees during the breeding season stopped by. Skinks, spiders, butterflies (especially if I set out pots of flowers), and a host of other critters also visit or live there. Yards can be a great place to take up birdwatching. Carolina wrens and some other common birds often nest in yards, some on buildings or in plant pots, and many others will also visit. While having a decent set of binoculars helps to observe birds at a distance, setting out feeders and birdbaths along with planting native plants that provide food can bring them closer. Hummingbirds should be arriving soon, and a feeder filled with homemade “nectar” will draw them in. A typical yard can host thousands of species of terrestrial invertebrates on, above, and under the ground. In my yard, I’ve observed some amazing ones doing some amazing things. When I planted

giant sunflowers to see who would show up on them, I discovered red carpenter ants “farming” keeled treehopper larvae for the “honeydew” they excrete. A magnifying glass can help in getting a closer look at tiny species like these. (In a pinch, I’ve used the zoom feature on my smart-phone camera to see more detail on some tiny creature, or taken a photo of it to enlarge later for further examination.) Once I picked up an eastern eyed click beetle, almost two inches long, and perched it on my hand to see how such a heavy-bodied bug could take off. As I watched, it pointed its abdomen down, perhaps to lessen wind resistance and serve as ballast, and slowly made a nearly vertical ascent. Recently, I awoke at dawn to a world shrouded in fog. As the sun came up, I could see dozens of small spiderwebs, bejeweled by drops of moisture reflecting sunlight, on plants all over the yard. By noon, every strand of the messy webs, made by tiny cobweb spiders, had disappeared, leaving me with more questions than answers. On moonless nights in late spring, I often see a fairyland celebration of flickering lights from the ground to the forest crown — fireflies trying to attract mates. Gardening is a great way to enjoy nature. Putting in a mix of native plants of various types and heights, and letting some native “weeds” grow, will attract and support more wildlife better than a mowed lawn. Species of clouds fly high above our yards, and cloudspotting is educational and great fun, especially when done with kids. Each species has its own shape and behavior that can fire up our imaginations, calm or scare us, and portend changes in weather. If you have kids stuck at home, turn them loose in the yard and encourage them to discover nature on their own, or go out with them. Kids generally come to nature with their minds more open than we adults do, so while it’s good to share what we know with them, it’s also good to give them space to learn and imagine on their own and for them to share their own take on nature with us. Journaling what we find in nature can help us focus on details we might otherwise miss and track changes in nature over the seasons and years. Nature journals can also remind us of our favorite experiences outdoors when we most need it. Many printed guides, apps and websites are available to help with identification and to learn more about species (see sidebar below for a few of my favorite resources). The more we learn more about the natural world, the more clearly we can see our role in it, and the more likely we are to appreciate and protect our environment and our fellow travelers on this spinning blue marble. ❖

TIPS FOR PLANTING AND ENJOYING A
Pandemic Victory Garden BY JANENE CULLEN, PHD
A
mericans organized and planted “Victory Gardens” during World War I and World War II. During both of these wars, Americans converted any available space into a garden to help feed their family and their community. It was an act of resilience by using a shovel. The enemy today and for the past year is COVID-19. Between employee illness, restricted travel, and stay-at-home guidelines, our food supply chain has been affected. As we navigate the uncertain times ahead through this pandemic, perhaps it is time to raise our shovels once again! At its most basic, growing food is simply a matter of sticking a seed in good soil, watering it, and watching it grow. You can start a vegetable garden any time in spring, summer, or fall. You do not need to have a lush garden on an acre of land to grow all sorts of tasty delights. A little bit of space on a windowsill will work for small things like herbs and lettuce. You can grow smaller vegetables like tomatoes in pots in the kitchen. If you are lucky enough to have a garden with some good soil and space for digging, go ahead and start planting. Here are some general tips to get you started:
1. Pick your garden site •

{ MARCH 2021 | HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE }
A sunny patch in the backyard is an obvious choice for a Victory garden, but it is not the only option. If you are short on space in your yard - consider working in edible plants around your existing flowers and shrubs. If you have space in your backyard, mark the area you intend to plant. It’s easiest to create a slightly raised bed by adding gardening soil to your plot. If you are stuck with a shady backyard, consider growing vegetables in containers on the front porch. Many vegetable plants are quite attractive, so there is no need to give up curb appeal. Another great way to get started is with a few containers on your back deck or patio. Cherry tomatoes, herbs, leaf lettuce, and pepper plants grow very well in containers. No space to garden? See whether there are any community gardens in your town. Or consider asking a friend whether you can garden on their land in exchange for a cut of the harvest.

“
GARDENING IS ALSO GREAT FOR KIDS. TEACHING KIDS ABOUT GARDENING IS A SIMPLE WAY OF LETTING THEM LEARN ABOUT NATURE.”
2. Create good soil Plants need nutrients to grow. They get nutrients from the soil or the regular addition of fertilizer. Homemade compost is the preferred way to fertilize, and it’s essentially free. If you don’t have compost, use organic fertilizers. Planting food crops that you intend to ingest means you should be aware of what you put on your garden soil. Synthetic chemical fertilizers should not be something you add to food you are going to eat.
3. Pick your plants What vegetables and herbs do you find yourself buying a lot of? Focus on those you eat regularly to make the biggest impact on your grocery bill. Some local favorites include: • Herbs – Fresh herbs can make every meal super tasty. Easy to grow inside or outside. Basil, parsley, and sage are good choices. • Tomatoes – A staple in every garden. Many varieties and sizes from small cherry tomatoes to large beefeaters. Can grow from seed or a small starter plant. • Salad leaves – You can almost grow this year-round if you pick different varieties. Can grow inside or outside. • Onions – The ultimate staple ingredient. Green onions (scallions) grow quickly. • Peppers – Hot or not, fresh peppers are a great way to add nutrition and spice up your meal. Can grow a variety from seeds or small starter plants. • Potatoes – Can grow in the ground or a large garbage bin. • Strawberries – Will grow in pots or in the ground. With luck they will keep producing fruit for several years.
4. Determine when to plant and when to harvest Virginia Tech has a good list of vegetables and the best time to plant/ harvest each, so visit their website. Also, Prince William County area is generally USDA planting zone 7b, and you can usually find additional seed planting instructions on the back of seed packets.
5. Enjoy the harvest! There is nothing more innately rewarding than planting food, watching it grow, and then harvesting it. It is such a joy to walk out to your own vegetable garden for a snack or for dinner ingredients. Growing fruits and vegetables in your backyard will also give you greater peace of mind about the food you consume. You’ll know for sure that no chemicals have been used. Gardening is also great for kids. Teaching kids about gardening is a simple way of letting them learn about nature. Give them designated tasks and allow them to marvel in planting seeds, watching them grow, and picking fresh vegetables.
To get more information on any gardening issues, please contact the Prince William Master Gardeners at 703-792-7747 or master_gardener@ pwcgov. org. They offer frequent gardening classes and lectures which are usually free to the public, and at present are offering classes over Zoom and posting gardening information on YouTube. You can also sign up for updates on classes at www. pwcgov. org/GROW. MICHELLE M. HOPKINS ATTORNEY AT LAW 571.248.2210 MHOPKINSLAW.COM
It was so tough on the personal services industry. What changes did you have to make? Sanitation has always been paramount for me as an esthetician so when it came to disinfectants and proper cleaning protocol, I was ready! Eventually, those disinfectants became in short supply as their demand increased which posed quite a problem. Additionally, I was not able to provide all of the waxing services I offer, such as lip and chin, as my guests had to leave their masks on at all times. I also had to structure the timing of my appointments differently to limit the number of people in my room.
One Year Later How the Pandemic Made Us Pivot BY SUSAN MCCORKINDALE
This month marks one year since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s not an anniversary to celebrate per se, but it is a wonderful opportunity to applaud the creative solutions our local business owners, many of whom are our friends and neighbors, have devised in an effort to keep their livelihoods alive.
Denise Coleman
OWNER, BLACK CAT WAX, GAINESVILLE
Tell us about your business and how it was impacted by the pandemic. I own Black Cat Wax, a full body waxing studio for women and men. I’m also the mother of a nine-year-old boy. Balancing work life and homelife during the pandemic was incredibly difficult. At the end of March, I had to close my doors for about six weeks per the Governor's order. In between relocating from Manassas to Gainesville in early April, I spent most of my time during quarantine keeping in contact with my guests while homeschooling my son.

{ MARCH 2021 | HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE }
So you had the double whammy of trying to work while homeschooling your son. What has that been like for you? As a single parent, my son relies on me for everything. Consequently, I had to severely cut my working hours so I could be home to assist him with virtual learning. This has been a struggle at times and quite an adjustment. But keeping him safe and healthy is my number one priority.
Despite how difficult the past year has been, are there things you’ve learned that you feel will help you now and in the future? As difficult as this past year has been, I feel that I have come out of it more confident and self-assured. Because I am a solopreneur, I struggled with the idea that I was a "real" business owner. But seeing so many different businesses struggle just as much if not more than I did taught me that we were all in the trenches together just trying to stay afloat. I also learned how amazing this community is about supporting small businesses. So many new guests have come to me because they wanted to uplift our local economy and shop small. It's a beautiful thing and I'm so thankful for it.
Ashley Gray
OWNER, ASH SALON AND SPA, HAYMARKET
Oh wow, a hair salon. How did you hang on? Yes, I own a hair salon and spa so obviously my personal services business was directly affected. We were mandated to shut down for ten weeks and ever since we have reopened, we have had to adhere to strict guidelines from the CDC to keep our guests and our staff safe. Covid hit our industry hard, but I am happy to report we stayed afloat and in a way, clients appreciate their hair and skin more now than ever. I can’t tell you how many women have said, “You are essential!”
“The pandemic has brought my whole team closer together. We all gave a hundred percent to get through this.” — A S H L E Y G R AY
Tell us about the modifications you’ve had to make. We have had to undergo several changes and alter our whole cozy/close “barbershop” vibe that clients really did love. We space out every other chair but on the occasion we do need to sit beside each other, we use mobile protective screens in between stations. We also rearranged the salon to make room for two new stations so we’d have more space between stylists. We had our staff adjust their schedules to avoid overcrowding the salon. We were always super clean, but now we’ve taken it to a whole new level (and our cleaning supplies costs rose significantly!). Upon entering, every guest is asked to fill out a Covid waiver to ensure no careless behavior and we also provide our guests with masks. Another thing that’s changed is we now have clients call before they come in rather than overcrowding the waiting area.
Do you have children you needed to homeschool while trying to keep your business afloat? I had my first child in January, so I didn’t have that challenge but several of my stylists did and my heart goes out to them! It’s hard enough being a working mom, but to then add “teacher” to your plate... I can’t imagine.
Despite everything, are there things you learned that you feel will help you now and in the future? Absolutely. We all had such a challenging year but I think we all took the time to reflect and realize what’s important. Relationships are so important, especially in our business. We have some really close bonds with our guests and it was challenging not being able to see them and then when we could, to not be able to hug them. It made us value that bond so much more. Overall, my team really grew and got stronger because we gave a hundred percent to get through and survive this together.

Kim Johnson
OWNER, EVERMORE FITNESS HAYMARKET
Tell us about your business and how it was impacted by the pandemic. I own an in-home post physical therapy/fitness training company. We specialize in geriatric, Parkinson’s Disease, spinal injury, and overall health, fitness, and wellbeing for seniors. Initially, the pandemic impacted us by drastically reducing business because the majority of our clients are high-risk individuals who had to quarantine.
What changes did you have to make to keep your business going? We’ve taken steadfast precautions with personal protective equipment and are hyper vigilant about social distancing so that in-home training can begin to be reinstated. At this point, seventy-five percent of our clients are virtual. While business dramatically decreased, creative options to continue training have been a result. Unprecedented times require unprecedented innovation. I call this my “Covid-19 silver lining.”
Despite how difficult the past year has been, are there things you’ve learned that you feel will help you now and in the future? Absolutely. It’s crucial to have faith, inner strength, and an open mind in order to persevere.
Lesley Salman Nancy Powell
PRINCIPAL BROKER/OWNER SALMAN HOME REALTY
PRINCIPAL DESIGNER POWELL BROWER INTERIORS
Tell us about your business. How it was impacted by the pandemic?
Tell us about your business and how it was impacted by the pandemic.
I own a real estate company and a property management company. Due to the low inventory, both businesses have been very steady.
We have a full service turnkey interior design firm that normally is handson every step of the way. Often we design spaces for our clients that are not lived in to the fullest but this is no longer the case. Since the pandemic, clients want more functionality in their homes and more beautiful rooms to reside in, since they’ve never spent so much time staring at their walls! Since more people are working from home and home-schooling, we’ve been turning living rooms into home offices, and designing beautiful, well thought-out workspaces that are multi-functional.
What changes have you had to make over the past year? We have adapted our process to provide more Zoom presentations and porch drop-offs of swatches and samples. This has not hindered us much and our clients appreciate that we keep projects moving along. Our work crews have not missed a day and are as busy as ever. It’s the supply chain that’s been the most difficult. Stocking and shipping delays along with rising costs of materials is the Covid norm, unfortunately. I have a client who ordered new chairs in May of last year that still haven’t arrived. Extra doses of patience are required at this time.
Despite how difficult the past year has been, are there things you’ve learned that you feel will help you now and in the future? Most certainly this has been a learning year for all of us. We are more grateful for our business and for the opportunity to work with wonderful people, and continue to put customer care and satisfaction above all else. It has taught us to take time to appreciate even the smallest things, nurture relationships, and take better care of ourselves.

{ MARCH 2021 | HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE }
Showing homes had to be tough. What changes did you have to make to keep your business open? We have taken more phone appointments and made showing homes Covid compliant.
Do you have children who need to be homeschooled? If so, what has that been like for you? I put my son in a daycare facility that has allowed him to flourish and me to work the hours I need to.
Despite how difficult the past year has been, are there things you’ve learned that you feel will help you now and in the future? Yes. I’ve learned so much about myself. I’ve completely changed the way I view the world, myself and others. I’m so much more in tune with my core values and have totally rearranged my life. I have started painting, meditating, and doing yoga. I’ve healed relationships with my children and parents, changed how I parent, and have deeper and more meaningful relationships with almost everyone I know. Now I look for ways to serve others and today my life is filled with passion and meaning. ❖
