Summer’s Coming: Get Ready for Camp! BY SUSAN MCCORKINDALE
A
t the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the summer camp industry took a real hit. But, according to the American Camp Association, the 2021 season saw a huge resurgence, with the number of campers nearly equivalent to that of 2018. With the 2022 camping season on the horizon, that’s good news for our local summer camps and campers. “This summer we anticipate an increased demand for summer programming and activities, and have planned accordingly,” said Kirsten Bradley, Public Information Coordinator for the Fauquier County Department of Parks and Recreation. “We believe that there is still a great need in our community for school age programs that provide a safe and fun environment.” Fauquier County Department of Parks and Recreation’s "Summer of Fun" day camps are open to children ages 5-12 and offer trips to the pool, arts and crafts, group games, field trips, special trips, and more. Aimee O’Grady of Verdun Adventure Bound echoes Bradley’s sentiments. “At this point in the season our summer camp enrollments are comparable to last year’s,” said O’Grady, “and we’re very excited about our upcoming summer program.” Verdun Adventure Bound offers a variety of summer camps for children ages 7-17. Its camps are designed to bring campers together with nature and each other to grow as individuals all while having fun. The camps provide a safe space for children to disconnect from electronics and participate in activities like zip lining, climbing-tower, high ropes, kayaking, fishing, water games, and more. Both Fauquier County Parks and Rec and Verdun Adventure Bound enjoyed full enrollment with waiting lists in last summer’s camps. “We were very grateful to host our 2021 camp pro-

gram,” said O’Grady. “We ended up having the highest enrollment in Verdun's history.” “Our summer 2021 camp was at full capacity with a waiting list,” said Bradley. “We operated with appropriate staffing according to our safety guidelines.” Full enrollment. Waiting lists. Parents and campers, it’s time to get cracking. Pick a camp and register today! hg
Safety Precautions Parks and Rec follows social distancing guidelines, requires masks for staff and campers, and adheres to strict sanitation routines. As an outdoor adventure camp, campers at Verdun remain outside where it’s easier to maintain social distance. If social distancing cannot be maintained, the camp requires masks for staff and campers and adheres to strict sanitation routines.

summer camps & private schools With the weather still chilly and winter coats still hanging by the door, it may seem strange to start thinking about summer camps...but now is the time to plan. Experienced parents know that summer camps fill up fast and early. The benefits of summer camps for children are undeniable. They expose children to a variety of people, places, and activities which help them gain independence and learn lifelong skills. Camps can also get kids unplugged and physically active, as well as providing a break for parents during the long days of school vacation. This is also the time of year that parents may contemplate making a change in their children’s education, perhaps changing schools. If you’re thinking of investigating a private school education for the fall, now is the time to start. That’s why we created this special advertising section for private schools and summer camps to get you started in planning both your child’s summer fun and their education for next year.

ADHD or Lack of Quality Sleep? BY DR. TONTRA LOWE
H
as your child been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or any variation of it? Did you consider disordered breathing (SDB) issues such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) as an underlying cause? Have you seen or heard any symptoms of sleep disordered breathing such as snoring, severe and loud teeth grinding, or frequent bedwetting? If so, your child may not need pills, but good quality sleep instead. According to ENThealth.org, pediatric sleep disordered breathing impacts 2%-3% of children with snoring being the most common and recognizable symptom. Although snoring may be common, it is not normal. It is a sign that there is something amiss that needs further investigation. Here are two other tips to help you make decisions.
Seek Assistance from Your Oral Physician/Dentist
Your oral physician is a great advocate for you and your family. On most health history forms, they ask about snoring. Make sure to discuss any symptoms that seem odd to you with your dentist and share concerns with your pediatrician. Don’t skip the question; be honest and engage in a conversation. Untreated OSA can lead to high blood pressure and increased traffic and job-related accidents in adults. It can also lead to embarrassment during sleepovers, poor sleep, and irritability in children that can translate to difficulty in learning. Your dentist is the first person to notice signs in the mouth and can get you referred to a sleep physician, ENT clinician, or dental specialist based upon age and other factors.
Use Medical Insurance Benefits When Available
Solutions for pediatric or adult SDB disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea can include early intervention with various orthodontic appliances to reshape the jaws, or wearing an oral medical device to reposition the lower jaw. Your child may need to see an orthodontist to address

a narrow palate. Use medical insurance to help cover some of the costs for these solutions when possible. Try to select a dentist knowledgeable in billing medical insurance for treatment in the mouth to help reduce out-of-pocket costs. Make an appointment with your dentist today if you notice snoring, teeth grinding or moody/disruptive behaviors in your child. Quality sleep can take the place of medications for some, and eliminate or reduce symptoms. Isn’t it worth a discussion? hg Dr. Tontra Lowe is an expert in creating smiles that change lives at Awesome Smiles Dental Center located near the Haymarket Kohl’s. Seeing our clients “get it.” When they invest time working “on” and not just “in” their businesses, some very impressive things happen. Seeing them grow into true leaders armed with the right tools to succeed is very rewarding. The moment business owners free themselves from growth barriers and really start loving running their own business in a controlled and measurable fashion is gratifying. These are the goose-bump moments for us!
Tell us about your experience with HGBA.
Our experience with HGBA has been rewarding, uplifting and enjoyable. This organization does not have cliques, it’s different from many of the other business organizations we have been part of. Everyone is open, approachable, helpful, kind, and considerate. The culture is very positive and forward-looking, and the value received for the membership investment is huge.
How has it supported you and your business?
We have made many great connections and have been able to make valuable referrals to our clients based on the relationships developed at the HGBA. The learning events have been helpful in gaining insights and perspectives from fellow members and guest speakers. We have learned of many new start-up businesses and found businesses we did not know existed.
What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals?
1. Invest adequate time working “on” and not just “in” your business. 2. Become a resource and extend offers to help make referrals, connections, and introductions. Give back as much as you can without expecting anything in return. 3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You are not alone, and you are not the only one with business issues – find a coach to help guide you.
Are you from this area?
We relocated to Vienna from Southern California in 1988 and moved to Fauquier County in 1993.
What are some hobbies you enjoy?
My wife, Jean, and I share a passion for cooking, growing vegetables, music, and travel. I also enjoy photography, technology, and building/fixing stuff.
What is your favorite restaurant?
Claire’s at the Depot in Warrenton.
Are you involved with any nonprofits? When did you start this business and what services do you offer?
Paradigm Solutions was founded in September 2002. We are a woman-owned, home-based small business offering full-service business coaching and consulting services and specializing in supporting micro and small businesses. Our areas of specialization include coaching, mentoring, training, business process improvement, business planning and profitability improvement.
How does your business serve the local community?
We are passionate supporters of economic development and the business community and have served the local community for more than 19 years by helping small business owners with the “business stuff.” Without an objective and trusted advisor at their side, business owners often find themselves stuck and feeling alone. We help them gain confidence and arm them with tools and knowledge so they can take their companies to the next level of success.

While we have coached and consulted with many non-profits, I currently serve on only one non-profit board, the HGBA. We support many non-profits, on an annual and rotating basis, with donations.
What was your first job, or your most interesting job prior to your current profession?
My first real job was as a “Box Boy” at Fazio’s grocery store in Glendale, California. Before that, my brother Rick and I owned a lawn and garden care business. I was also a Disc Jockey in a night club during the Disco Era and ended up running my own mobile DJ service in SoCal. hg The Haymarket Gainesville Business Association was established in 1990 and is the premier association supporting business and community involvement in the Haymarket-Gainesville area. The Goddard School: Bringing Early Childhood Enrichment to Gainesville BY HANNAH SAMLALL PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK
“O
ur curriculum is driven by the interest of the children, but guided by our professional teachers,” said Lisa O’Brien, co-owner of The Goddard School in Gainesville. When it comes to early childhood enrichment, few names hold the same weight as The Goddard School. Known for being the premier provider of early childhood education across the country, the company has more than 500 franchised schools in 37 states, and uses current, academically endorsed methods to ensure that children have fun while learning the skills they need for long-term success in school and in life. With that kind of reputation, opening a Goddard School was a no-brainer for Lisa and Greg O’Brien who were looking to bring enrichment to our community. Both Lisa and Greg have had long and varied careers. “I’m from Virginia Beach, but moved to San Francisco, which is where Greg and I met,” Lisa said. She has practiced law in the past, and ran a professional chef business. “Greg is an executive recruiter, which makes it easy for us to pick up and go.” “We traveled up and down the east coast, which ended with a trip to my brother in Baltimore,” said Greg. “He and

his wife were both running Goddard Schools at the time. We landed in Philly next, which brought us near the Goddard systems headquarters, and realized how well suited it was for what we wanted for our lives.” “When we moved here,” Lisa said, “our daughter was only two and we were looking for some kind of childcare and early childhood education for her, so part of picking Goddard was our family’s need for it.” The establishment of The Goddard School has resonated greatly with the families in town. “When you move out of the city as we did, you leave all of the services and amenities that you’re used to,” Lisa said.

That’s been a surprising benefit of having chosen this area - it resonated with a lot of other families as well.” So why, beyond its stellar reputation, choose The Goddard School? “One of the things unique to The Goddard School is
“The teachers explore the children’s interests while making sure they’re meeting development milestones,” said Lisa O’Brien, co-owner. Here lead teacher Stephanie Henke does just that.
that the owner is here every day,” Lisa said. “That’s the way the Goddard business model is built. A big focus of mine is the families and their needs on a day-to-day basis. I want to make sure we’re providing that hands-on customer service. And I love that I get to see the parents and children daily.” Of course the most important endorsement of The Goddard School in Gainesville comes from the parents. “We couldn't be happier. After some research and online tours, we decided that Goddard would be the best match for our family,” said Eva-Maria Logvin of Haymarket. “It turns out it was a great decision! While we were never unhappy with the daycare she attended before, we could tell by how smooth the transition was that the personal care for each child is amazing. What we love most, other than the great teachers, is the responsiveness and professionalism of the entire staff. We hope to be able to stay here for a while.” “One of my favorite things,” said Lisa, “is going to the grocery store and running into current or past family members, to be able to see them and for the child to recognize me and say hi. I read about kids in high school achieving things and graduating from different places. I can’t wait to read about the children who come through our school 10 years from now.” hg For more information about the Goddard School of Gainesville, visit their website.

Don’t Let the Sweet Face Fool You: BY BETH LUNA
S
he’s a giggly girl at nine years old, but don’t let that fool you. When Faith Danna and her father William do taekwondo together, it is he who bows to her as she holds the higher rank of second-degree black belt to his first-degree black belt. “She absolutely adores it when that happens!” said mom Gretchen. Granted, William is a federal agent with a black belt in kung foo, but it is Faith who shines in taekwondo, specifically poomsae. Faith, a student at Glenkirk Elementary School in Gainesville, has sampled many activities in her short life – ballet, softball, swimming, tumbling, horseback riding, rock climbing – before finding her niche with taekwondo poomsae. “Faith is a natural athlete and was three when she began taekwondo,” Gretchen said. “When we recognized she had a talent, we moved her to US Tigers where they could really support her. Now, it’s like a second home – we practically live there.”

In fact, while maintaining good grades at school, Faith trains six days a week at US Tigers. “Master Charlie is her main instructor,” Gretchen said. “Since 2019, she has entered fourteen big competitions, placing mostly gold with a few silver and bronze.” Last December, Faith placed second in the US Taekwondo Poomsae Metro Open International in Jersey City, New Jersey - one of the largest taekwondo federations in the US that works with the Olympics. Faith is ranked #4 nationally in her category for taekwondo poomsae. Poomsae, or forms, is a set of choreographed movements in a particular sequence consisting of fundamental stances, kicks, punches, and blocks to help students master balance, coordination, and technique. Faith is the youngest member of the 12 person US Tigers poomsae, or forms team. “Each form is consistent and known worldwide,” Gretchen explains. “Faith knows 18 different ones. Competition is serious – each judge is looking at a different

part of the body – her hands, feet, eyes, head, fingers, and then she receives a combined score.” Though part of a team, at the competitions participants are by themselves in front of the judges. Even at her young age, Faith takes steps to prepare not only her body but her mind. “I have to clear my mind and just focus right before each competition,” she said. “I get sort of nervous when I begin.” The forms are performed one at a time, lasting from one to two minutes. “As she progresses through the competition, she may have to do as many as six forms, depending on how many people are participating, what kind of competition it is, and how many people are moving up in the competition,” Gretchen explained. What does Faith enjoy most about competition? “The best part of going to competitions is performing!” she said. “And I tell you she likes winning too – she is very competitive!” added Gretchen. During the closures due to the pandemic, young Faith kept training like a pro. “She amazed me. For almost 8 months she did classes via zoom,” Gretchen said. “Then 6 days a week on zoom in addition to private lessons.” “I like everything about it,” said Faith. “There are breaking and kicking techniques, and I taught myself a one handed cartwheel.” Training includes 10 finger pushups, knuckle pushups, and an unbelievable amount of stretching – lots of splits on the wall, on a chair, holding techniques and more, so she can be stretched and loose and can kick over her head. In addition to her taekwondo schedule, Faith takes swim lessons on Sundays, is a member of Vertical Rock Climbing Club, and she takes mixed media art lessons twice weekly. She also sees an academic tutor twice a week before school starts at 7:45. What’s in store for Faith’s poomsae future? There is taekwondo competition at the Olympics, but as of now that does not include poomsae. “They are petitioning for poomsae to come to the future summer Olympics; it’s hopeful but there are unfortunately no guarantees,” said Gretchen. “Once Faith attains 4th degree blackbelt she is a master, and at that point she will be around 15 years old and she can begin teaching. And who knows, maybe she’ll be an Olympian.” hg

Curl Up & Relax:
M&S Studio in Gainesville has what it takes to style all hair types and textures BY SUE BALDANI

omen with curly or textured hair know that finding a stylist with the knowledge and expertise to make their hair look fabulous is not an easy task. To this day, the skills taught in professional hair classes typically focus on straight hair. “It’s something the industry lacks - teaching and informing stylists how to handle curly hair,” says Monique Bray, a hair stylist for the past 16 years. “Many stylists will say they can cut curly hair, but first they blow dry, straighten and flat iron it before they cut it. Of course, when it reverts back to curly, the style isn’t the same.” Being a person with curly hair, she knows firsthand what it’s like to go into a salon and have someone who is untrained do her hair. This is one of the main reasons she, along with her business partner and friend, Shantelle Robinson, decided to open M&S Studio in Gainesville last October. “We wanted to create a space where you can thrive, whether you’re getting a cut or a color, you know that this salon is for you,” says Bray. “You can let your guard down and have full confidence that you will get your hair done properly.” From the very beginning, Bray always dreamed of owning her own salon. “I just fell in love with this industry,” she says. “I specialize in color, color correcting and of course, my favorite, curls. That is my jam! And having the ability to transform the way people look at themselves is amazing.” Opening her own salon and working for herself also gave her the freedom to branch out and not have any limitations on her career. “I started out in corporate salons, which was a good foundation,” says Bray. “I learned some of the fundamentals that I needed, but I felt that there was a ceiling cap and I don’t ever want to feel that I’m boxed in.” She strongly believes in education and improving her skills, and continues to take classes in order to gain knowledge. “Education elevates us,” she says. “We know if we stay educated and up to date with everything, the clients benefit the most from it.” She also enjoys being able to share what she learns with not only other stylists, but with clients as well. “I tell everyone who comes in that our relationship is a 50-50 partnership,” says Bray. “I take care of my 50 percent when they are here, but going home and knowing how to maintain the style, that is the other 50 percent. And they can’t do that without the education we give them.” She and Robinson also believe in educating their clients about products that will keep their hair healthy as well as looking great. “We are nitpicky on that,” says Bray. “We sell products in the salon and all of them have been tested by us to

determine whether we like them or not. It’s the same with the curly hair products we sell. All three of my children also have curly hair, and all of our curls are different, so having four product testers to find out if the products work is great. “We are also big on our products being vegan and clean and knowing what’s in them, because that’s important to our clients. I recently had a client whose son has a nut allergy and he can’t even be in the same room with anything having peanuts. One of our products contained it, and she was able to educate me on that, so now I can educate other clients.” She and Robinson personally provide all services to their clients. “Shantelle has the same training as I do and she is the Brazilian blowout queen,” Bray says. “She is so fast with it and seeing clients come in one way and how she transforms them to another is like, ‘Oh, girl, you are magic!’” Some of their clients come in every two to three weeks for blowouts because they don’t want to do it themselves, and they trust that it will be done right. “When you do a blowout, it can relax the curl if it’s not done properly, and it can damage the hair,” says Bray. “So, to be able to have someone like me or Shantelle who can blow it out and not have their curl pattern jeopardized, is super important.” The salon itself is small, intimate and conducive to relaxation. “Our stations are butcher blocks with white

drawers, but since we love Afro-Bohemian colors, there is this asymmetrical wallpaper underneath with teal, yellow and burnt orange hues,” she says. “They sort of create a vacation vibe.” The vibe, Bray and Robinson’s respective talents, as well as their commitment to educating clients on how best to care for their hair has made the studio very popular since the day it opened its doors. “It’s always an amazing experience when I visit Monique,” said Laura Brent of Culpeper. “She’s tremendously talented and knowledgeable. She teaches me how to take care of my hair and my daughter’s hair! hg M&S Studio offers a wide range of services including deep conditioning treatments, cutting, blowouts, silk presses, Brazilian blowouts, curly cuts, and color, and welcomes both children and adults. amantha Walton and Nancy Burgess have very successful careers in the beauty business and, up until recently, both worked out of their respective homes – Walton in Aldie, and Burgess in Gainesville. But when they decided to pair up in the same Haymarket office in the summer of 2021, their clientele couldn’t have been happier. “We’ve always referred our clients to each other, and now our clients can come to the same space for both services,” says Walton, owner of Simply Beauty, a professional lash extension studio. “Plus, my new clients would see that we have tanning and Nancy’s new clients would see that we offer eyelashes.” Burgess, owner of Airbrush Tanning by Nancy, adds, “It’s been great. I didn’t realize how many of the same clients we had, but it has also brought me business from those who didn’t know that I could make a body beautiful too. And, my clients end up inquiring about her services as well.” Their office, located on the second floor of 14950 Washington Street, has a cozy sitting room and two private rooms where the women provide their services. “It has good vibes and feels very peaceful,” says Bur-

60 clients a week, and also gives courses to others in the business so they too can offer the best in eyelashes to their clientele. Her clients can choose variations of lengths and thicknesses and once Walton knows a client’s desired look, she places synthetic lashes one by one onto natural lashes with a special adhesive to make sure they last. Since great care has to be taken when working around the eye area, it’s important to have an expert who is trained in doing the procedure. “If someone doesn’t know what they’re doing, it could be dangerous,” says Walton. “In Virginia, as in most states, it’s actually required that you hold an aesthetician or cosmetology license to do them.” It’s clear Walton knows what she’s doing and her clients love her work. “Samantha at Simply Beauty is my go-to for lashes,” said Kim Ristedt of Warrenton. ”She’s been doing them for two years. Her work ethic is beyond compare and you always leave feeling like a supermodel!”

gess. “Everyone loves it.” Walton, who initially rented the office space about three-and-a-half-years ago, loves that they’re not competing against each other, but instead complementing each other. And the two work very well together. “Nancy is so creative, fun, caring and outgoing and I couldn’t have asked for anyone better to be partnered with.” Burgess loves having someone to bounce ideas around with and is so glad she asked Walton to share her space. Of course, it’s also nice to have someone to split expenses with since rent can be prohibitive for many small business owners.

Walton has been an aesthetician for 10 years and began focusing on eyelashes five years ago. “When eyelashes became big on the West Coast, I wanted to learn how to do it even though it wasn’t super popular here yet. I figured maybe I’d add it to what I was already doing, but one person after another started coming in and it just kept growing.” Today, she sees about

Burgess has been offering professional airbrush tanning for the last 10 years. “As a teenager, I worshiped the sun and tanning beds and I saw the damage it did to my skin,” she says. When she was diagnosed with skin cancer in her late teens, she knew she had to find a safer solution. “Back then, I’d been searching for the perfect sunless tanning product that would provide me with a natural glow and I could never find one,” says Burgess. Eventually, she received a spray tan that utilized the same product she uses now, and the experience was so fantastic that she decided to offer it herself while continuing to work in real estate. “I went ahead and did it full time when I was going through a divorce and wanted to stay at home and be there for my son.” The secret to a great spray tan, says Burgess, is not only finding the right tanning solution, but also having a trained person apply it. “Initially I learned from the person who did my first tan, but then I went to Florida, where the solution is made, and had further training there. I continue to learn and always strive to find out about any new techniques.” In addition to giving clients a gorgeous color, the tanning solution, if applied properly, can camouflage skin flaws such as stretch marks. “The solution I use is also very good for your skin,” she says. “It’s 100% all natural, organic, and paraben free. It also has a lot of anti-aging properties, and can help clear up acne.” As long as you follow her instructions, the tan will last about 10 to 14 days. After that it will slowly fade and when it does, you’ll be back. “I went to Nancy for my first airbrush tan before my wedding and it was amazing,” said Nicole Walsh of Falls Church. “Nancy is very precise and uses all organic products; the tan is still beautiful almost a week out!” To find out more about these great businesses, visit simplybeautyva.com and airbrushtanningbynancy.com.

The Write Method An award-winning poet and writer inspires us to follow our dreams BY SUE BALDANI
A
s soon as Katherine Mercurio Gotthardt of Bristow learned to read, she discovered the power of words. At around age 5, she started weaving her own tales. “I wrote these stories and poems about my pets, and then when I got a little older, I started writing this magazine called ‘Puppet Gossip,’” says Gotthardt. “It was a little like the National Enquirer, but covered the secret lives of my puppets. I gave it out to friends and family.” Poetry, she says, was definitely her first love. “I think a lot of it stemmed from the reading I did as a child, especially Dr. Seuss books. I loved rhymes in my earlier life and still have a high interest in and passion for trying to make my poems sound lyrical when they’re read out loud. So, even if they don’t rhyme, there is a rhythm and cadence to them.” This method and process has clearly worked well for her. Among the accolades she has attained, such as winning first place in the Virginia Writers Club statewide Golden Nib contest in the poetry category and first place in the free verse category of Loudoun County Library Foundation’s 2020 Rhyme On Poetry contest, Gotthardt received the Seefeldt Award for Arts Excellence for Outstanding Individual Artist from the Prince William County Arts Council in 2021. This award recognizes and celebrates artists, arts organizations, volunteers, educators and busi-

nesses that build upon and sustain Kathleen K. Seefeldt’s legacy of public service and support for the cultural arts. “I thought I was being nominated for a volunteerism award for my work with Write by the Rails, since I’m the president of that group,” says Gotthardt. “When I showed up for the ceremony, I was so surprised!” She adds that she was also humbled to be chosen out of so many talented artists in the area. In addition to poetry, she wrote feature articles for the News and Messenger, a local paper, in the early 2000s, and after it stopped publishing, she started writing for Prince William Living Magazine. She then wrote columns for Potomac Local and Bristow Beat. “I didn’t realize I enjoyed writing columns until around 2020, and I then started writing about how to become happier.” From there, Gotthardt went on to publish her book, Get Happy, Dammit in 2020, which won a Silver Award from the Nonfiction Author’s Association. “It’s a collection of short essays and poetry and mindfulness exercises for improving one’s quality of life,” she says. Gotthardt has published nine books in total, including two children’s books. “I love the fact that children are reading and can connect with something I’ve written,” she says. “There’s something almost spiritual about that. When you see their eyes light up and their smiles, there’s nothing like it.” One day, when she was doing a book signing at Cookies & Cream in Haymarket for A Crane Named Steve, a woman and her teenage son came in. “She told me that I wrote her son’s story,” she says. “Here was this teenage boy and he wanted me to sign his book – I was almost in tears! You never know who you’re going to reach.” Aside from writing, Gotthardt is also involved in many writing organizations, including the previously mentioned Write by the Rails. “Cindy Brookshire from Manassas was the one who came up with the idea,” she says. “She wanted

to have a clearinghouse of resources for writers and somehow it turned into a group.” Brookshire and Gotthardt, along with a few others, became founding members of Write by the Rails. The name is derived from where they first met – in the Manassas coffee shop Grounds Central Station, right near the railroad. “Ultimately we connected with the Virginia Writers Club and then became one of its Chapters,” says Gotthardt. Today, Write by the Rails has about 50 members representing all genres, and hosts monthly events, publishes an anthology and holds workshops. Although members mostly meet online these days, they do try to have quarterly live events. Gotthardt encourages other writers to join writing groups such as this, since it will give them a chance to connect with fellow writers and help improve their own writing. And, she says, don’t be afraid to dream. She says, “Go with your heart and don’t be afraid to try out different genres. When I first started writing columns, I thought, ‘I’m not trained to do this.’ When writing children’s books, I had the same feelings of ‘Oh, I can’t do this!’ Try it and see where it goes because, first, you may end up deciding that it’s the genre you want to focus on, and second, you might also discover that you have a certain way of approaching it and you’re going to bring your own style to that genre because of it.” Today, Gotthardt lives in Bristow with her husband David, has two adult children, and what she calls two extremely demanding dogs. “My husband is one of my most wonderful supporters even though he always hated English classes in his youth,” she says chuckling. hg To find out more about Katherine Mercurio Gotthardt, M.Ed., visit katherinegotthardt.com and for information on Write by the Rails, go to visit wbtr.org.

Gray Face Acres Senior Dog Rescue: Giving Senior Dogs a Second Chance BY HANNAH SAMLALL PHOTOS BY PAUL LARA
F
oster families play an integral role in the animal rescue world. Bob and Debbie Gretz of Haymarket had been fostering for years when they realized most of their dogs had never left their home. Fueled by their love of older dogs, they opened Gray Face Acres Senior Dog Rescue and Retreat in 2016 in Haymarket. Last year, the Gretz family moved away but left the rescue in the hands of Jade Nguyen, who connected with Debbie in 2018. “One of my dogs passed away from kidney disease, so I had all the supplies for subcutaneous fluid,” said Nguyen, a Haymarket resident. “I came across Debbie’s information and thought it would make sense to donate the supplies to her so I met with her. She ended up asking me to administer the subcutaneous fluid and I wound up volunteering for a couple of years since she only lived five minutes from me.” Senior dog rescue is not super common, as they have

lots of special needs and are more difficult to adopt out. “Each dog is going to cost you at least $1k. We spend $2-3k per dog, on average,” Nguyen said. “Debbie realized that her heart was with senior dogs and she knew from her decades of experience in rescue that there weren’t a lot of people doing senior rescue. You have to be really passionate about seniors. At the end of their lives, they should be cared for the most. There was a need and Debbie filled it.” Originally from Loudoun County, Nguyen moved to Haymarket because her family wanted more land. She now lives on five acres and has a barn. When Debbie moved to Idaho, Gray Face Acres was going to dissolve, but with Nguyen on board, that didn’t end up happening. “In June, I took over and that was supposed to be a temporary or interim thing, but now I am the Director of Operations,” said Nguyen.
As Director of Operations, Nguyen wants to build a team around her. “We have so many great volunteers and people in leadership,” she said. “When Debbie started the rescue with her husband, it was just the two of them and they would save dogs and get them adopted out and now it’s become an infrastructure with processes in place to grow. We will always be volunteer-only — that’s a huge part of our mission. The money will always go to the dogs.” Even though the Gretz family isn’t in the area anymore, they’re still very much involved. “Debbie is still on the board and we talk every day. She is a wonderful resource,” Nguyen said. “When she moved to Idaho, she started Gray Face Acres West and is changing the perception about senior rescue and increasing awareness about the need to help senior dogs.” The community has been a huge part of the success of the organization. “One of the things I struggled with at first, is that there is a way to operate a rescue that’s about volume, then there’s a way to operate it that is about the dogs being 100% cared for and ready for adoption,” Nguyen said. “Neither one is the right or wrong way — saving dogs is the priority.” At Gray Face Acres, they are focused on saving the dogs that may cost more to help but believe that they, too, deserve a second chance. “Everyone is absolutely on board with that. People support us because of our mission and we’re able to fulfill our mission because of that support. When a senior comes to

Gray Face Acres, they’re only getting the best.” One of many rescue stories from Gray Face Acres is the story of Noodle. “Ten-year-old Noodle found himself in a shelter after wandering around for what clearly was a long, awful time. He was extremely matted, in constant pain, and had a yucky mass on his rear end,” Nguyen said. “No one claimed him and he was in the shelter for over a month. Finally the shelter called us. Now Noodle is with an amazing Foster Mama. He’s just one of the many success stories of seniors who come to Gray Face Acres needing love.” hg To learn more about Gray Face Acres and to donate, visit their website at grayfaceacres.org or find them on Facebook at Gray Face Acres Senior Dog Rescue.
