Building Confident Readers M BY AAREN CRAVARITIS

ost everyone knows the label “reluctant reader.” I prefer, and would ask us all to change that to the more promising term, “developing reader.” As a librarian who was, and is, a slow reader, I know that there can be pressure on kids to choose a book to read. Children benefit from understanding their own reading ability, with the goal of easing into chapter books with more complex text. But of course the question remains, how do I capture the attention of my developing reader?

Cool displays and works of nonfiction

Sometimes it is a well-placed display of books that have been made into movies or an intriguing collection of books about scary creatures that live at the bottom of the ocean. Nonfiction books are also a powerful way to capture the attention of developing readers. It isn’t necessary to read every page or from the beginning until the end. Readers can browse through the book and stop on a page that looks interesting. These techniques are great ways to build reading confidence and stamina.

Consider different formats

Consider the many formats that books come in. A paperback book can also be enjoyed as a book on CD, a Playaway, an e-book or an audiobook available on Libby, OverDrive and hoopla Digital. Audiobooks are a favorite of mine. Readers can listen on a much higher level than they themselves can read. Try it while following along with the book or while in the car. If you’re not familiar with a Playaway, it is a pre-loaded portable media player that is battery operated. It’s small, convenient, and does not require an electronic device or Wi-Fi.

Try some graphic novels Graphic novels are especially appealing to developing readers who are not ready to pick up a more traditional book as they’re written like a comic-strip. Readers still do the mental work of understanding the story line, character development, problem, and resolution, but because there’s imagery combined with text, developing readers can find them more interesting.

Involve the whole family

The summer is a wonderful time to get children warmed up to reading by doing some family literacy activities. Take turns reading. Older children benefit from sharing both chapter books and heavily illustrated books which offer fun “Ah-ha!” moments for reading comprehension. Having images alongside words provides a bridge for understanding the text. You can also try the classic hot potato game with books. Pile a variety of books in the middle and read one until the timer runs out then switch books. Read slow or fast – it doesn’t matter.

When a developing reader says, “I just finished a book!” it’s a big deal and is worth celebrating. Librarians and staff are here to help our young readers, at all levels, explore the many options for them at Prince William Public Libraries and, with summer reading right around the corner (June 14 – August 15), we’re eager to help kids and teens find the right fit for them. Whether visiting in person, enjoying our Digital Library online, or using our curbside service we have something for everyone to enjoy during the warm weather. ❖

sorting, item distribution, staging services, realtor relations, space planning, and the list goes on. We are here to serve. Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your current profession. If there is one that comes to mind it would be finding a very special pearl necklace. OHCIH was hired by a daughter to clean out her deceased parents’ home so that it could be sold. The daughter had looked high and low for the pearls, but couldn’t find them. When OHCIH arrived, we found them. You see, the pearls were something borrowed and the daughter wore them on her wedding day. There are a lot of things we find that are forgotten about or that siblings never knew their parents had. Everything from cash to deeds to safe deposit keys. We have even found gems taped behind a desk drawer.

Tell us about your experience with the HGBA. How has it supported you in your business? I appreciate the friendships we have forged. I’ve been a member for more than three years. It’s such a friendly and supportive group. When and why did you decide to start your own company? Had you asked me ten years ago what a transition services company was I wouldn’t have been able to answer you but, because of my own personal experience, I started OHCIH, LLC. In 2011 my mother passed away from Alzheimer's. Four months later my father passed. Trying to settle their estate became a nightmare. How do you get rid of all the stuff? What needed to be auctioned, donated or recycled? As certified move managers

we are held accountable to a strict code of ethics by the National Association of Senior & Specialty Move Managers known as NASMM. We also hold a Home Specialist Aging in Place certification. How does your business serve the local community? Our tagline is “taking the stress out of the transition.” We provide a variety of customized concierge services that include estate organization and relocation, packing and unpacking of household items, organizing and

What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals? 1) Never ask your employees to do anything you yourself wouldn’t do. 2) Never underestimate the power of prayer. 3) Be willing to change. Are you from this area? If not, what brought you here and what do you like about our town? I’m originally from Massachusetts. In 1981, I was asked to open a personnel recruiting company in Falls

Church. Always thought I’d be a metropolitan type person. But no. I love this area. What is your favorite season in this area and why? When I was younger I would have said fall. Today I enjoy the warmth of spring and the sun on my face. What are some hobbies you enjoy? Being outdoors, gardening or bird watching. What is your favorite restaurant? So many to choose from, it’s hard to pick just one. I’ll go with Best Thai Busaba. Are you involved with any nonprofits? If so, which ones and why? I’m involved with the Alzheimer’s Association as my mother passed away from it. For the last seven years I have co-facilitated an Alzheimer’s caregiver support group that meets monthly in PW. Presently I’m also involved with Gideon’s International and the Paralyzed Veteran’s Association. What was your most interesting job prior to your current profession? I started working when I was a freshman in high school, but my most interesting job was with American Cyanamid. I was just out of college and working in their Shulton division which acquired The Jacqueline Cochran fragrance CIE. Candice Bergen was hired as the spokeswoman and I had the pleasure of meeting her and indirectly working with her. Her signature saying for CIE was, "I can wear it when I'm Miss Bergen...I can wear it when I'm Candice...or when I'm just plain Candy."

local expert THE EXPERT:

TOP 5 NUTRITION MYTHS:

DEBUNKED!

There’s a lot of conflicting information about nutrition that can make people feel confused about where to start. But, Stephanie “Steph” Grasso, MS, RD, says the easiest way to ensure you’re on the right track toward proper nutrition is to implement a balanced diet. With 1.7 million followers on the popular video-sharing app Tik Tok, she has dedicated her entire account to debunking nutrition myths through proven research. Below, she reveals the top five most believed myths and why they need to be put to rest.

MYTH #1:

CARBS MAKE YOU GAIN WEIGHT.

Carbohydrates (carbs) are the body’s main source of energy. Limiting carbs deprives your body of necessary fuel along with many nutrients needed to maintain good health. There are two types of carbs: simple and complex. Simple carbs, typically found in refined sugars, send immediate bursts of glucose into the bloodstream and can spike insulin levels. Complex carbs, or “starchy foods” like rice or pasta, release a steady level of glucose into the bloodstream and are chock-full of necessary nutrients that are stripped from simple carbs during production. Grasso especially recommends whole grain starches for the high fiber content.

12

{ MAY 2021 |

MYTH #2:

RESTRICTING YOUR DIET IS MOST EFFECTIVE FOR WEIGHT LOSS.

It’s common to think that you must cut out certain foods to meet your goal weight. However, if you restrict foods that you enjoy, your body tends to crave those more, increasing your risk of overindulging. Grasso recommends adding nutrientdense, fiber-rich foods to each meal to help you feel more satisfied and less deprived.

MYTH #3:

FOODS WITH HIGH CHOLESTEROL ARE BAD.

Grasso said that many people are confused about cholesterol and try to avoid it in foods. However, there are two types of cholesterol you should look out for: Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad cholesterol” contributes to plaque buildup in your arteries and increases your risk for heart disease. This is attributed to eating foods with high-saturated fat, like bacon, cheese and butter. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) or “dietary cholesterol” discourages plaque buildup and does not directly affect your blood cholesterol. This type is found in many nutrient dense foods, like eggs. “Eggs get such a bad reputation because the egg yolk has a high level of cholesterol,” Grasso noted. “But, they have so many vitamins and nutrients that many people in the United States are deficient in, such as Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, protein and fiber. Foods with highsaturated fat are a much greater risk to the body than foods with high cholesterol.”

}

Stephanie “Steph” Grasso, MS, RD

MYTH #4:

CERTAIN FOODS BURN FAT.

Some foods are marketed as “fat burners” and contribute to weight loss. However, Grasso points out that there is no food that burns fat and you only lose weight in a caloric deficit. A popular “fat-burning hack” is drinking apple cider vinegar shots first thing in the morning, but Grasso says this can do more harm than good, as the high acidity can erode your esophagus.

MYTH #5:

FRESH FRUITS AND VEGGIES ARE BETTER THAN FROZEN.

Many assume that fresh produce has more nutrients than frozen varieties, but Grasso says from a nutritional standpoint, one isn’t better than the other. The only difference is when they are picked. Because transportation in the United States can vary between three days to several weeks, fresh produce is picked before it’s ripe to allow time for it to fully ripen before it hits the shelves. Frozen produce is generally picked at the peak of ripeness then washed, frozen and packaged, locking in the majority of the nutrients ahead of transport. “What’s important is to pick the produce in the form you think you’ll eat it the most,” Grasso says.

Steph Grasso, MS, RD, is a registered dietitian at Novant Health UVA Health System Haymarket Medical Center and one of Tik Tok’s top nutrition influencers (@ stephgrassodietitian). For more information on nutrition and weight-loss services at Novant Health UVA Health System, visit NovantHealthUVA.org/ weightloss.

“TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE”

DIETITIANS AND NUTRITIONISTS ARE DIFFERENT. TRUTH!

Dietitians are board-certified with a four-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited program and must complete a one- to two-year internship. Nutritionists do not require a degree to practice in most states but can be helpful resources for those trying to lose weight or better understand nutrition concepts.

THE “KETO” DIET IS BEST FOR SUSTAINABLE WEIGHT-LOSS. LIE!

The ketogenic diet restricts carbohydrates and forces the body into a state of ketosis, causing your blood to become very acidic. Many “keto” recipes are extremely high in saturated fat, increasing your risk of heart disease.

“WHOLE GRAIN” MUST BE THE FIRST WORD ON THE FOOD’S NUTRITION LABEL TO BE CONSIDERED A WHOLE-GRAIN PRODUCT. TRUTH! This signifies

the bran and germ are still intact, ensuring you get fiber, protein and antioxidants. “Refined” or “enriched” mean it’s been stripped of these key nutrients.

t age 76, Joan Patton of Gainesville continues to maintain and set new standards in her personal physical fitness and well-being. She began working with a personal trainer ten years ago because she wanted to be held accountable to her fitness goals. Also, because she is an avid golf player, she knew that finding someone to assist in functional fitness would help her strengthen her game. Clearly, Patton is a prime example of how seniors can develop, maintain, and advance their overall mobility, feel more confident, and have a greater quality of life at every age. Patton, a mother of five, was an educator in Fairfax County from 1972 to 2010. She taught at Lee High School in Springfield and Westfield High School in Chantilly. Physical fitness was not a priority during her childrearing and professional years, but she still led a very active life. Upon her retirement, even though she is blessed with very good health, she knew she needed to improve her personal fitness and to work on specific aspects of fitness that are very important for aging adults to address. Core strength and balance were at the top of her list and to make sure she stuck it out and did the work, finding a trainer to be accountable to was crucial. “If I have an appointment, I do it!” said Patton. Through my firm, Evermore Fitness, LLC, which specializes in geriatric training, I have been working with Joan since 2012. She’s made great strides and improvements in her core strength, balance, and her golf game through golf specific exercise. “Sometimes I forget how old I am until I walk past a mirror!” Patton said. She also states that she does not refrain from doing what she wants to do. And, most importantly, does not sweat the small stuff. Passionate about getting older adults to exercise, Patton swears by her motto, “keep moving,” and recommends that those seniors contemplating improving their personal health not hesitate to do so. “You can feel youthful again,” she says, “and your mind is more alert.” ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Kim Johnson is the owner of Evermore Fitness, LLC. Located in Haymarket, Evermore Fitness is an in-home post physical therapy/ fitness training company, specializing in geriatric, Parkinson’s Disease, spinal injury, and overall health, fitness, and wellbeing for seniors. ere are some things I never would’ve known if it weren’t for my dog and his stubborn insistence on getting a good walk every single day: Most neighborhoods are full of cats and squirrels. Goose poop is a beloved dog delicacy. Dogs don’t care if there’s a hurricane or blizzard, they want to go out. Now. And you must come, too. It’s hard to stay stressed and self-absorbed watching your dog roll around in fresh-cut grass with pure joy and tongue-lolling abandon. Likewise watching your dog dig sand tunnels at the seashore. Your dog won’t judge when you run like a little kid chasing the ice cream man to catch every last moment of a sunset over the Occoquan Reservoir. He’ll run with you. On an early June afternoon, you’ll be surrounded by hundreds of dragonflies walking the beach at Mason Neck State Park in Fairfax. Splashing along Quantico Creek at Prince William Forest Park on a sweltering summer’s day, picking up sparkling chunks of fool’s gold (pyrite) as you go, is an antidote for whatever ails your soul.

According to Harvard Health, walking isn’t just good exercise, it’s practically a cure-all. Regular walking reduces your risk of heart disease and breast cancer, eases joint pain, boosts immune function and even helps tame a sweet tooth. (That’s right, a 15-minute walk can “curb cravings for chocolate and even reduce the amount of chocolate you eat in stressful situations.”) On top of that, a study commissioned by the Wilderness Society shows time spent outdoors and away from our phones boosts cognitive abilities and creative thinking. The study found that immersing ourselves in nature, sans technology, can restore some brain functions, including attention span, problem solving and multitasking. But how do you force yourself outside to commune with nature on a sub-freezing February day? Or a July afternoon when the mercury and humidity are both hovering around the 100 mark? Get a dog. Just like the postman, neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays a dog from swift (or not so swift) completion of his appointed rounds. Plus, canine companionship is full of health benefits, too. Dog ownership reduces stress and gets you moving, reducing your risk of heart disease and other ailments exacerbated by lack of physical activity, according to the American Heart Association. And perhaps most touching of all, dogs can cure heartbreak, literally. In 2009, the UCLA Medical Center conducted a study in which heart failure patients were exposed to therapy dogs for 12 minutes per day. Those patients demonstrated reduced blood pressure, heart rate and anxiety. So what are you waiting for? Grab the leash and get outside with your best friend. ❖ ABOUT THE AUTHOR Kari Pugh is digital editor of InsideNoVa.com. also returns their nutrients to the soil. Excitingly, there are a number of ways that individuals can recycle their food scraps and yard waste. “I started composting with an above ground bin that I bought from the county,” Maria said, “but, today, I also compost using a tumbler, an in-ground crab bucket, and a worm farm--this is in my kitchen and is my favorite. I even make a leaf compost in black trash bags. It’s compost five ways!” There are also an increasing number of companies in our area that will compost food scraps. Companies like Apex Organix and Compost Crew will collect your weekly food scraps for $15 to $30 per month, and many towns are offering drop-off locations. Prince William County residents can bring their food and yard waste to the compost facility on Balls Ford Road in Manassas for free. All of these options will lead to the food being recycled and turned into a nutrient-rich compost. When used in your soil, compost provides organic matter and microorganisms that produce immediate and long-term soil health. And, as plants pull carbon dioxide out of the air, compost will store the carbon in the soil and help to slow global warming. To help celebrate this year’s Compost Awareness Day, Prince William County Solid Waste Division, Freestate Farms and the Virginia Cooperative Extension Prince William Master Gardeners will host a socially distanced event on Saturday, May 8 from 10am to 1pm at the Balls Ford Road Compost Facility, 13000 Balls Ford Road in Manassas. Today, Maria continues her passion for gardening and is in the final stages of completing her Master Gardener’s course work. The Master Gardener program provides intensive horticultural training to individuals who then volunteer in the local community. “I use compost in my vegetable garden, on my flower beds, and around my berry bushes,” said Maria. “I get much larger flowers than before and more frequent blooming, and my veggies are more vibrant in color and taste. I also save money now too because I am making enough compost that I don’t have to buy any. I win, the environment wins, we all win!”

hile Maria Wells of Montclair made her first flower garden as a young girl out of an old, repurposed dresser drawer, she only rediscovered this hobby in 2017. “One day, I just wanted to see if I could grow something,” she said. “I grabbed a whole bunch of kale, and because my family wouldn’t eat any of it—they didn’t think I knew what I was doing—I ended up eating lots of kale myself.” Her friend recommended that she try using some compost in her garden and, shortly thereafter, she found herself at a local compost awareness event. “Something just clicked. I have always been a person who repurposes things, so when I first heard about composting, it just made sense to

me. Here’s a way that I can recycle, have a better garden, and contribute to a healthier environment.” It’s stories like Maria’s that bring this year’s International Compost Awareness Week theme to life: “Grow... Eat...COMPOST... Repeat.” Composting is a circular process that takes leftover food and turns it into a compost, which can then be used in soil to grow even better fruits, vegetables and plants. While Maria does this whole loop herself, individuals are able to contribute to any portion of the process and, by doing so, help their local community be more sustainable. The average American wastes almost one pound of food each day, according to a study by the U.S. Food and Drug Association. When placed in a landfill, food and yard waste not only takes up valuable space but contributes to the release of methane, a greenhouse gas that is at least twenty-five times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Composting this food and yard waste prevents these greenhouse gas emissions and

mother’s daygifts

BEST and FUNNIEST

What’s the best Mother’s Day gift you ever received? What’s the funniest Mother’s Day gift you ever received? We asked these two questions of several local moms and their answers are touching, thought-provoking, and absolutely hysterical. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do and to all you moms out there, have a wonderful Mother’s Day. May it be fabulous and side-splittingly funny!

Carylee Carrington GAINESVILLE

BEST MOTHER'S DAY GIFT

My favorite Mother's Day gift came a little late and it was for my first Mother's Day. My son, Bradley, was born the day after Mother's Day. It's always such a great treat when his birthday and Mother's day are close together, because he’s still so young and can't really make a big deal over mom, but I like to make a big deal over him.

FUNNIEST MOTHER'S DAY GIFT

My funniest Mother's Day gifts are always the stories my boys wrote in preschool, the one that has them answer questions about their mother. I have been 108-years-old, 13-years-old and my job has been a fairy princess. Those stories have been such a highlight. They also are some of the sweetest, just seeing what they came up with.

BEST MOTHER'S DAY GIFT

Christine Craddock

The best Mother's Day gift I have ever received was being awakened to breakfast in bed, served on a platter with avocado toast, eggs and a mimosa. Then, my two girls along with my husband, made a picnic at Silver Lake Regional Park in Haymarket to enjoy some fishing, hiking and just chatting on a blanket. We brought toys, books and snacks and spent a lovely afternoon together. The weather was perfect, which made it even more special.

HAYMARKET

BEST MOTHER'S DAY GIFT My birthday and Mother's Day are in the same week, so I am often asked by my family what I want for those two special days. My love language is not gifts, it is time spent together. The best gift I have received is a whole day with my family going where I want to go and with a photo session with me and my two beautiful kids. It is usually a day trip somewhere out to the mountains or a nice lunch outside somewhere. A few Mother’s Days in a row, I asked to go camping so we spent the weekend together and the kids were able to make crafts as part of the campground activities. The things they crafted were for me and they were so sweet.

FUNNIEST MOTHER'S DAY GIFT The funniest Mother's Day gift I have ever received was a basket filled with my children's toys when they were four and five years-old. I was a little confused why they were giving me their toys, but decided to ask them how they chose the "gifts" to give me. They told me that these were their favorite, so they picked them out for me to play with and enjoy on "my" day. It was so sweet! The "real" gifts came after dinner time.

FUNNIEST MOTHER'S DAY GIFT The funniest ones were when the kids fill out those little questionnaires at school and their answers are either so off or just adorably accurate. One year my son wrote that my favorite food was "chips with green stuff." I am a total avocado-holic. He also said of me "you are cute like a little dog."

FUNNIEST MOTHER’S DAY GIFT

I think Mom's can unite in that we don't want to cook, wash dishes, or do laundry on Mother's Day! A day with my family and without doing my usual tasks is a very welcome break!

My boys have attended Haymarket Baptist Preschool and I've always loved the Mother's Day crafts they bring home. I'll never forget when they drew a picture of me and had to fill in the blanks describing what they thought about me. “My Mommy... weighs 22 lbs, always says, ‘Go brush your teeth!’ and smells like flowers!” Those handmade gifts are priceless.

BEST MOTHER'S DAY GIFT

BEST MOTHER'S DAY GIFT

I am blessed to be married to a wonderful man with whom I have two amazing children, Kennedy, 14, and Warner, 11. My husband always does an excellent job of organizing my Mother's Day celebrations which usually includes me enjoying some "me time" the Saturday before, not having to cook on Mother's Day, and the gift that keeps on giving - cash, and my children always make me feel special by making or purchasing cards as well as giving me thoughtful gifts. But the best gift I’ve received was when, unbeknownst to me, my husband took our children to Muse PaintBar in Gainesville and each of them made me a beautiful painting of a mother elephant and her calf. Not only are the paintings visually stunning, they are extra special because my husband thought of a gift that would touch my heart and my children invested time and effort to create the paintings.

The best Mother’s Day gift I ever received was a dinner with the whole extended family at a Korean BBQ restaurant. Our whole loud, happy family in the corner with my sisters, my parents, their kids, my kids, and our husbands enjoying our favorite foods is the best memory and gift. Perfect chaos.

FUNNIEST MOTHER'S DAY GIFT The funniest Mother’s Day gift I ever received was a handmade book by my then 7-year old son about Deadpool. It was full of his drawings of Deadpool and a story. He said, “You won’t let me watch it or read it, so I had to guess.”

FUNNIEST MOTHER'S DAY GIFT My husband and children have great senses of humor. Five years ago, we adopted a sweet dog named Louie who loves frequent rubs. I would often complain about Louie's clinginess. One Mother’s Day after Louie’s arrival, my family gave me a gift of a "Pet Petter" that promised that “you will never have to touch your pet again!” When I opened it, the box was empty. We all got a big laugh out of it.

Samantha Spittle NOKESVILLE

BEST MOTHER'S DAY GIFT As much I love being a mom, it can be hard and sometimes parents need a break! One of my most memorable Mother’s Day weekends was when my kids were toddlers. I went up to Leesburg with some girlfriends, leaving our kids at home with our spouses. I think we squeezed five women into a small hotel room for some laughs and time together. We went for a hike, ate some snacks, had some drinks, took some naps, and enjoyed our freedom. The time away together refilled our cups so when we returned home Sunday afternoon, we truly enjoyed spending time with our kids. I realized that weekend that, although I love being a mom, it can be very physically and emotionally draining. It may be a cliche but it’s true; you can’t pour from an empty vessel. Self care looks different to everyone, but the important thing I realized was that refilling my cup was essential.

FUNNIEST MOTHER'S DAY GIFT Well, since my love language is more acts of service and quality time, gifts aren’t a big thing in our house. My husband and I usually get cards for each other when we are at the grocery store. We lovingly pick out a card, hand it to the other person to read, then put it back. Sorry, Hallmark!

A Mother’s Day of Wine BY MARK LUNA

BELOW: The author and his mother, Pat, the woman who shares his love of global travel and, of course, wine.

I

’ve often referenced my father’s influence on my love for wine. Those early introductions to various bottles at the dinner table, particularly on special occasions, were almost always prompted by him and his wine passion, in turn passing that along to me. But, make no mistake, my mother’s interest in wine was equally acute; she was just a little more soft-spoken about it. My mother and I share the same birthday. And while there’s no need to discuss age here, let’s just say she was young when I was born. The advantage, it turns out, is that the older we’ve both become, the closer we’ve gotten in age. It’s worked out very well for years now when it comes to enjoying a glass of wine together. And to that point, as I’ve also referenced before, our mutual love of travel has enhanced our love for global wines. My mom had the opportunity to live in France as a young girl. She’s also visited many great wine producing countries in her adult life, not to mention multiple trips out west, to the various wine regions of California. So, in honor of my mom, and to all mothers celebrating Mother’s Day this year, I’ll share with you some wines that not only I love,

but are also my mother’s favorites. Perhaps they’ll be on your Mother’s Day table as well. Moms and chardonnay. Sorry, they just belong together. Probably because a great chardonnay, like a loving mother, is irreplaceable. It can present itself in more ways than any other white wine grape in the world, is a workhorse in the toughest of conditions and is the Queen grape of Champagne. What more do you need? In our family vacation years to California’s wine country, and certainly the years of my SoCal life, I came to know great

Dont’ forget about curb appeal! Here are some tips: • Create a focal point, such as a tree, garden bench, painted front door or statue. • Make sure your house isn’t hidden by overgrown shrubs. • Planters add appeal. Creating impressive arrangements is easy, just remember: Thriller (tall plants like grasses or angelonias), Filler (plants that add bulk. Think coleus, begonias or petunias), Spiller (Cascading plants like bacopas or vines). • Solar lighting along walkways is an inexpensive way to showcase your property.

chardonnay. In more recent times, my favorite producer has become Ramey Wine Cellars. David Ramey, along with his wife Carla, founded Ramey Wine Cellars in 1996. His resume is the stuff of legends - Matanzas Creek, Dominus, Rudd, Chalk Hill - and in the 25 years of producing wines under his eponymous label, he’s become an iconic figure of California chardonnay. His bottlings of Sonoma County, as well as his single-vineyard Napa Valley chardonnays, have shaped the way many wines in the United States are made today, with an array of groundbreaking winemaking techniques that are now the standard. The California ‘style’ that we’ve all come to know can truly be attributed to the extraordinary skills of David Ramey. Of his numerous selections, my go-to bottling is the Ramey Wine Cellars Sonoma Coast Chardonnay. The 2017 vintage is the second one to come exclusively from the acclaimed Martinelli Charles Ranch, just two short miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. It’s 100% Chardonnay and is aged for a year in French oak barrels. Creamy textured, yet respectably acidic, it has orchard fruit for days and a finish that doesn’t quit. A beautiful wine; and priced at $40, a beautiful gift for mom. Like I mentioned, my mom lived in France, one of the greatest wine countries in the world…ever. And if you’re inclined to drink rose`, then Provence is a must. My mom will concur, she’s been there. The late Luc Sorin, a man Robert Parker once called “the most exciting winegrower the South of France has to offer,” purchased his 14-hectare Bandol estate in 1994. Bandol, France is mere minutes from the Mediterranean Sea and is home to some of the most beautiful wines you’ll ever drink. Domaine Sorin is in the heart of Bandol and produces a Provence rose’ for the ages, Domaine Sorin Côtes de Provence Rose “Terra Amata”. There’s something magical in the air when it comes to the Mediterranean Sea and its influence on the nearby vineyards, and

28

Domaine Sorin Côtes de Provence Rose “Terra Amata” is proof that magic can be real. Organically grown and hand-harvested, it’s an artful blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah, with numerous floral notes, a wash of berries and ripened strawberries. It’s clean, weighty and bone dry…the hallmark signature to Provencal rose’. It’s a wine worthy of a place at the most notable brunch of the year, especially at around $20. And finally, Italy. I’ll cut to the quick; in my family, vino Italia reigns supreme. For me, it’s Piemonte and Nebbiolo. For my mom, it’s Tuscany and Brunello di Montalcino…she’s been there, too. Montalcino is a small medieval hill-top town in the southeastern part of Tuscany, about 25 miles south of Siena. An ancient place, it’s home to the finest Sangiovese grown - Sangiovese Grosso – and produces the longest age-required wine in all of Italy, four years, Brunello di Montalcino. Of the many small-property, world-class labels to come from Montalcino, Fattoria La Gerla is one of the best. Founded in 1976, La Gerla was born from the passion of its founder, Sergio Rossi, a successful businessman who fell in love with his vineyards, caring for them as if they were his children. The vineyards are located on the Montalcino hill, 320 meters above sea level, right where the slope softens. Sergio Rossi passed away in July 2011, but his legacy lives on through the vineyards and the wines they produce. Of his small handful of offerings, La Gerla Brunello di Montalcino 2015 is a force to be experienced. Harvested solely by hand, this Brunello (little dark one) is a powerful wine, with dark red fruits, earthy tones and a structure that commands a palate’s respect. Sangiovese is an inherently acidic grape, but its mutation Grosso offers a nearly equal tannic backbone, giving it enormous ageing capability, well beyond the six years already passed since harvest. If your Mother’s Day feast is calling for an epic red wine, this one, priced around $70, is the one to get. It will be on our table, honoring the woman who brought me into this world. I hope you have a wonderful May and until next time, Happy Vino’ing!
