elcome to the May issue of Haymarket-Gainesville Lifestyle! We have so many terrific stories to share with you this month. Most of which are, rather surprisingly, sports-themed. You’ll meet Haymarket’s very own Paralympian, Evan Nichols, and Gainesville’s Keith Snyder, who did 160 helicopter spins in the sky to become a Guinness World Record holder. You’ll also meet Bristow mom, Hilary Blasco, whose FIT4MOM franchise is helping moms get in shape, make friends, and have fun – all with their kids in tow. And don’t miss our Rising Stars piece on 13-year-old Ethan Bernier of Gainesville who somehow manages to be an honor student, elite Boy Scout, and crazy good hockey player all at the same time. Rounding it all out is a one final sports piece on the incredible Battlefield High School Boys Basketball team. The pictures alone, taken by our own Doug Stroud, will choke you up. What a season those young men had. Until next month, happy reading and, to all the moms out there, Happy Mother’s Day!

ilary Blasco has always been interested in fitness and health, and after becoming a mom, she decided to take it to a whole new level. She left her 9-to5 job and purchased a fitness franchise just for moms and moms-to-be. “I had two little kids at home, Amelia and Ella, and I was trying to get through the days,” she says. “When we moved to Bristow a little over a year ago and I realized there wasn’t a FIT4MOM here, I decided it was time to shift my career into something I was a little bit more passionate about.” Her husband, Christian, she says, was very

supportive of her starting this new venture. “He could see my passion and knew how much it would mean to me to do this for moms in our area.” Blasco was already familiar with the franchise from being a member in other cities and loves everything it has to offer. FIT4MOM allows her to combine her love of business, fitness and motherhood all into one. Her grand opening in April of 2021 was a great success, even though it was in the midst of COVID. “We were outdoors, which helped, and moms really wanted to get out of the house,”

she says. Many of the classes encourage mothers to bring their kids along with them. “Paying for childcare just to get in a onehour workout is expensive,” says Blasco. “Another benefit of our classes is the connections being made; meeting other moms, celebrating victories and having support.” “My 21-month year old daughter, Bella, and I have been members of FIT4MOM since it opened,” says Katie DeRosa from Haymarket. “It helps me stay healthy, but it is so much more than that. The mamas I’ve met and befriended are invaluable. I love

that it provides a village of moms. I’ve met so many amazing people who have helped whenever I have questions about my own kid or just want to talk to another adult. My daughter gets to know other kiddos and I get to hang out with friends.” Moms can feel very isolated, says Blasco, and here they can connect with others who are going through the same joys and challenges of motherhood. “Becoming a mom flipped my world upside down,” says DeRosa. “It has been the greatest, most challenging time of my life. But, having a group of people who are going through (or have gone through) what you’re experiencing is extremely comforting.” All of the instructors are certified and trained to coach pre- and post-natal members. “We have that knowledge, so moms can come in and don't have to worry about whether they can do this or that,” says Blasco. “And everyone can do what feels best for them and listen to their bodies, which is most important.” There are classes such as Stroller Strides, where moms can get in a 60-minute cardio strength and core restorative based workout with their kids; the Body Boost workout, a mom-only eight week session workout; Stride

FIT4MOM also offers nutritional recipes and tips on wellness such as staying hydrated and getting enough sleep. Classes are held throughout Bristol, Gainesville and Haymarket. During the winter, they take place at Evolution Basketball in Gainesville, but as soon as the weather turns warm, classes move outdoors. Moms can try out their first class for free and can then sign up for two different memberships - unlimited membership, where they pay once a month and attend as many classes as they want, or class packs of 10.

“It’s a wonderful, supportive, and fun environment,” says Heather DeJarnett of Haymarket, and mom to Lyla, 3, and Brodie, 16 months, who joined last July. “It helped me in more ways than I can express. It will give you regular time to work out, give your kids the opportunity to interact with other kids regularly, and give you a group of people in the same season of life as you.” Every month, FIT4MOM also has regularly scheduled events, and every week, it has playgroups for the kids. “There is something for everyone,” says DeRosa. “I’ve gone to breweries, paint nights, pizza parties, and escape rooms for moms’ night out, where we all hang out outside of workout clothes and without kids to chat and have fun. The crafts, play dates, and story times are times where my daughter can play with other kiddos.” “I had moms hold their planks while drawing things related to their children with chalk,” said Blasco. “Like their kiddos favorite food and their kiddos names.”

lying through the sky with a board strapped to his feet is Gainesville resident Keith (KĒBĒ) Snyder’s idea of a good time. What began as a hobby back in 1995 took him to the X Games and eventually on to win the Guinness World Record for the most helicopter spins in the air during a jump. “In 1994, I saw this guy spinning and saw the smile on his face and I wanted to know what was going on there,” he says. “To stand on something in the sky - I just wanted to experience that. You are literally getting to stand on top of the world. It's a very empowering feeling when you’re flying through the air.

I actually go into this meditative state when spinning.” At this point, he has completed over 6,500 jumps all over the world. Sky surfing, says Snyder, began in 1988, and it progressed when people started adding in little tricks like flips and spins. “It grew and grew until you had an international community of sky surfers. The X Games were born in 1995, and sky surfing went to an explosive level of participation because you had ESPN pumping money into the sport. That core group got so good so fast it became hard to chase. That became my fuel for a while.” Making it to the X Games in 2000 was a huge accomplishment. “The next year, they ended up dropping Sky Sports, but I started winning Nationals in 2001, 2002 and 2003 and came in third in the World Cup,” he says. Snyder became so good that he began teaching others how to do it, and eventually opened a school in Arizona, where he was living at the time. “There's probably 250 people I've guided on how to do it safely.”

He performed 160 spins in 60 seconds. Below: “Seeing the pyramids for the first time as my canopy opened was sheer magnificence,” Snyder said.
Little did he know, his time in Arizona was coming to an end. In 2020, his father, Chris, was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of cancer that can occur in the brain and/or spinal cord. “I was in the middle of a text conversation with my mother [Catherine] when my father passed out,” says Snyder. “The next day, they found tumors and were going to operate. I flew back to be with them as soon as he came out of surgery. About 24 hours later, I was in their house in Gainesville looking out the window and knew I had to move back to be with them.” Chris died in September of 2020 at the age of 71. “After my father passed away, my mom started pulling things out of his end table and I could tell that it was stuff that meant something to him. My parents have been together almost their entire lives, and she found letters she wrote to him when they dated. There was also a little envelope with some of the stuff written about me for sky surfing.” Later in 2020, Snyder was invited to a Jump Like A Pharaoh event by organizer Mahmoud Sharaf of Egypt. He was introduced to Sharaf by Omar Alhegelan of Saudi Arabia, one of the camera flyers who films him. Sky surfing over the pyramids was something he dreamed of doing for years. Of course, winning the Guinness World Record in November 2021 in Giza, Egypt with 160 helicopter spins was another unforgettable experience for him. And he’s not done yet. “The idea is to break this record one more time. Right now, that's planned for the beginning of November and my goal is to

Snyder is going to help them add to this amount by taking pledges per rotation. “Skydive Orange of [Orange, VA] is supporting this Guinness World Record and brain cancer research fundraising effort by giving me sky surfing flight time. We have an arrangement for the practice flights I need in order to attain the level of performance necessary to set these new record levels.” Onelife Fitness in Gainesville is also helping out with a free gym membership. In addition to all of this, Snyder is busy writing a couple of books on sky surfing, which are due out in the near future. One is a guidebook on sky surfing and the other will focus on sky surfing from an engineering point of view. “I'm an engineer by trade and worked with the Merchant Marine Academy, so I want to help people understand the dynamics.” Today, he believes he’s where he’s meant to be. “I get to be with my mother and my family here in Virginia and continue to pursue sky surfing.” hg

That’s What Best Friends Are For: Haymarket Paralympian Evan Nichols discovered an athletic outlet thanks to Alex Green BY DAVID FAWCETT

van Nichols trusted Alex Green. So when Green suggested Nichols try sled hockey when both were fifth-graders, Nichols listened. Green knew how much his 10-year-old friend wanted to participate in an athletic activity without his disability standing in his way. Nichols was born with arthrogryposis, a condition that limited his mobility by affecting his feet and his right knee. He underwent over 20 surgeries, including the first at 5 weeks old on both ankles to clip each Achilles tendon to pull the heel bone down into his feet. At age 5, both his hips were impacted by Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. Then as a first-grader, Nichols had hip surgery at Children’s Hospital in Washington to reconstruct the ball of his left femur because the bone was dying due to the Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. Doctors performed the same surgery on Nichols’ right femur at the same hospital when he was in the third grade. Throughout the entire series of surgical procedures, Nichols had to learn to walk seven times. Those surgeries allowed him to stand and walk on his own for short distances. For long distances, though, the Haymarket resident relied on crutches or a wheelchair to protect his hips from further damage. Nichols had good upper-body strength and a desire to play sports. But his physical limitations frustrated him at

And it’s why this moment is as much about Green as it is about Nichols. “Alex is the reason all this started,” said Nichols’ mom, Julie. “He opened up an entire community to us.”

times. Prior to sled hockey, Nichols played soccer, basketball and baseball until his limited mobility prevented him from keeping up with the other kids. He wanted to do more and could not. Then Green proposed a sport he played that Nichols knew nothing about. Sled hockey has the same rink dimensions, and for the most part, the same rules as regular hockey. But sled hockey players sit in specially designed sleds and use two sticks attached to the sled to propel themselves and steer as well as to move the puck. Nichols attended a DC Sled Sharks’ practice at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Arlington. The experience changed his life. He enjoyed his first visit so much he wanted to go back. Sled hockey gave Nichols a much-needed athletic outlet where he thrived in a supportive community. Little did he know at the time it would lead to where the 17-year-old Battlefield High School senior is now: the youngest member of the 2022 U.S. Sled Hockey team that won its fourth straight gold medal in March at the

Nichols and Green met as first-graders and connected from the beginning. As the only two wheelchair-bound students in their class, they relied on each other in many ways. They never felt alone when they were together. They liked to make people laugh. They passed the ball back and forth in physical education class and talked endlessly about their favorite sports teams, in particular the Washington Nationals and their favorite player, Jayson Werth. And of course they shared an interest in sled hockey. After Green became sick with cancer, he encouraged Nichols to stick with the sport. Even if he could not play anymore, Green showed up at games to cheer Nichols on. Nichols did not fully understand what was going on with his friend and held out hope Green would return to the ice. After Nichols learned of Green’s passing, he went numb, and in his words, “was out of it” for a couple of days. At the funeral, Green’s mother, Jenni, hugged Nichols and they cried together. As tough as this moment was, Jenni told Nichols that everything was going to work out. Green was at peace now. Jenni wanted Nichols to keep doing what he loved and what brought Green joy. “The last time I saw him at a hockey game, he came to watch us,” Nichols said. “We got off the ice after we had won, he said congratulations to me.”
ON HIS WAY
In late December, Nichols received an email from USA Hockey. It contained two messages: one good news, the other bad. The bad news was that the U.S. team’s trip in January to the Czech Republic had been canceled. Julie and her husband, Daniel, had hoped to see Nichols play overseas in this tournament because no spectators are allowed at the Paralympic Winter Games due to COVID-protocols. But the mood brightened when Nichols read he had made America’s 17-player roster for the Paralympic Games. Julie was driving at the time. She got so emotional Nichols worried whether she was OK. “It was something we had not expected,” Julie said. The news came as a surprise because Nichols skipped the U.S. Men’s Development Team, something that usually doesn’t happen. But Nichols impressed the coaches enough during camps last fall to earn a spot on this year’s Paralympic team. He continued to shine during the team’s residency camp in Nashville in preparation for Beijing.

“We have seen such an improvement,” said head coach David Hoff. “When we got to Nashville in January that was really the first time that we had the team altogether for an extended period, and it was exciting to watch him and some of the younger guys grow from the start to the end of residency.” Nichols came home for a few days in February before flying to Los Angeles on Feb. 27 to prepare for the trip to Beijing. Julie admits she was a little nervous about her youngest child going so far away without his parents. But she took comfort in knowing that USA Hockey provided a guardian and that other players had experienced this situation before at a younger age than her son. “Evan is a really good kid and a great young player,” Hoff said. “We always say we have a really nice mix of old-

er and younger players on our team, and he’s done such a good job fitting in with this group. It’s always nice to see that dynamic between the veteran guys and the young, up-and-coming players.” Nichols took a leave of absence from school to focus on the Paralympics. But he will graduate in June and hopes to play sled hockey in college. All because of one person’s efforts. “Alex motivated me a lot more,” Nichols said. “He got me into this. I need to try my best. I would say I owe him a lot. He pushed me to continue.” hg David Fawcett is a reporter for InsideNoVa.com. You can reach him at dfawcett@insidenova.com

fter an emotional 55-54 victory over Patriot in the Class 6 state semifinals on March 7, Battlefield coach Randy Bills said he knew his team needed something “light” at the next day's practice. So they did a brief walkthrough, followed by another installment of a team favorite -- Knockout, a basketball-like game that develops shooting and other basketball fundamentals in an enjoyable way. “This team is unlike any other team I have had,” Bills said. “There’s a lot of jokes and they always are very loose … This team has quietly flown under the radar all year.” After beating a Patriot team that had previously beaten all comers, the Bobcats took an “us against the world” mentality into the Class 6 state final against a very disciplined and talented 31-0 Hayfield team on March 11 at the Siegel Center in Richmond. The Bobcats (20-7) lost 67-47 in their first state championship appearance. But Bills had nothing but praise for his team in offering up reminders why the Bobcats had the mettle and the talent to be on the cusp of a state championship in the first place.

First, Bills recalled a Patriot game late in the season when the Pioneers led by 27 at one point, but the Bobcats cut the lead to two points. “They [Patriot] had an amazing, fill-in-the-blank-withany-adjective-you-could-think-of type of season,” Bills said. “I congratulated coach [Sherman] Rivers again in a phone call. He did a great job all season. After cutting that lead to two points, I thought ‘If we could get another crack at them, we could do this or that differently and it might make a difference.’ It did." Bills also said while three-year starter Bryce Hammersley brought experience and leadership to the team, the Bobcats had nine different leading scorers throughout the season, an indication of their depth and talent. Another factor was the team’s first six losses, five were to state title contenders (four to Patriot and one to state semifinalist South Lakes). The team’s other loss came to

John Champe in what Bills and his coaching staff dubbed the COVID loss, because the team lost three starters three hours before game time due to COVID protocols. Bills cited his assistant coaches -- Kamau Street, Bill Witter and Robbie Rubio -- as another reason the team reached the state final. “I have an amazing coaching staff that were excellent in dealing with a lot of stuff off the court,” Bills said. “I can’t say enough about them.” Bills said the success the Bobcats have experienced in other sports has propelled a desire to see it happen in basketball. “Coming to work every day at Battlefield and seeing the pictures of the previous title teams in football, the three straight girls soccer state titles, and the individual titles Battlefield has had in track, wrestling, and swimming, you think to yourself, 'One day,’” Bills said. hg

Where did the name “Kapers” come from? “It is a nickname I got while waiting tables,” Kristina said. “My maiden name is Paul and at that point, most people called me KP. But there was one girl who blurted out ‘Kapers’ one day when she tried to get my attention, and it stuck with me as a special name. When I was trying to come up with a company name, my sister suggested Kapers Woodworks.”
G
ainesville resident Kristina Rall isn’t afraid to play with power tools. In fact, learning how to use new tools such as (insert big loud tool name here) has become one of her favorite pastimes, next to watching her 10-year-old son swim. Kristina is a full-time mom, full-time senior survey researcher for a policy research firm, and nighttime builder of custom wood creations for her company, Kapers Woodworks. Like many, Kristina discovered a new hobby when the pandemic hit. When her husband Christopher, a local PWCS teacher, needed to teach remotely, and her then second-grade son, Preston, had to attend school virtually, the Rall’s needed to upgrade their desk situation. So, Kristina took the knowledge she gained building a pantry earlier that year and made two desks. She enjoyed the process and started watching female woodworkers on YouTube to learn the basics. As her knowledge about types of wood and tools grew, Kristina began shopping on Facebook Marketplace for used tools and wood and making custom charcuterie boards. She also joined a local makerspace called Maker-

smiths. The makerspace is volunteer run by members who teach classes and boasts a metal shop and large expensive equipment like router tables, belt sanders, and laser equipment, that most home woodcrafters don’t own. Kristina dove headfirst into the learning process and spent many nights at the makerspace after her son went to bed. She took classes, became certified in using much of the equipment, and began planning new items to make. “I’m adamant about doing everything from scratch and buying local,” Kristina said. “I get local wood that was just milled from a tree and dried, pull the bark off, mill it, cut it and use templates I create on the laser printer. I want everything I make to be truly handcrafted.” Her career in education research has helped her hobby. She didn’t want to merely learn how to use each tool, she wanted to learn the inner workings of them, to truly understand how to optimize each—even how to fix the belts and knives on some. From there she began experimenting. Her charcuterie boards became more detailed; some had cutouts and colored epoxy; all are custom and one-of-a-kind. Learning this much and creating custom wood pieces

sounds like a full-time job. But Kristina has a rigorous full-time job and an active son who swims five nights a week and competes on many weekends. So, Kristina is creative about working around her family's busy evening and weekend schedule and will work into the wee hours of the morning if necessary. But as she’s built her collection of tools at home, and when the weather allows, she works in the garage and appreciates her neighbors who don’t mind hearing the sanding or cutting. Just as her assortment of tools has grown, so have her custom creations. Kristina has made cutting boards, charcuterie boards, signs, and trays with custom shapes and colored epoxy inlays, and recently started making whiskey flights for the Old Towne Whiskey Club in Manassas. She even learned how to etch each glass. Luckily, she has a great sense of humor for the many instances when people on Facebook Marketplace or other online shops think she’s buying tools for her husband, or when someone tries to “help” her use a tool. This woman isn’t afraid to stand her ground and show her expertise and talent. In fact, she will soon be teaching classes at Makersmiths. “I like the process of building as much as I enjoy the product itself. I like to work on the details and learn different skills.” Kristina said. “Part of my day job is prob-

lem-solving—if something goes wrong, I need to figure it out. Am I going to waste hundreds of dollars of wood, or am I going to fix it?” Spoiler alert: she rarely wastes anything and typically pivots her design or uses the wood for another purpose. In two short years, Kristina has taken a hobby and turned it into a growing business. And she encourages anyone who has a hobby and wants to spend more time on it to lean on the many resources available. She’s been part of an entrepreneurial group on social media that has helped her learn how to run a business and grow it. And from this group, she’s received nine orders, one of which is on its way to Argentina! What’s next for Kapers Woodworking? In addition to teaching classes on how to create a charcuterie board, Kristina continues to take custom orders and learn how to make new pieces. “If someone were to ask me where I want this to go, I would want a small shop, where I can teach women and girls and demystify and take the fear out of using power tools,” Kristina said. hg For more information about Kapers Woodworks, visit kaperswoodworks.com or @kaperswoodworks on Facebook and Instagram.

n a cold December day, the Piedmont Predators were finishing up their practice. Among them was 13-year-old Ethan Bernier of Gainesville. Completely covered in his helmet, pads, gloves, and leg-guards, he stopped goals from shots taken by other players in a rapid-fire drill. And he was completely undeterred. As the super-fast rock-solid projectiles headed towards him, he did his best to block every shot. This is a familiar afternoon setting for Ethan. Currently a student at Gainesville Middle School, he spends the day taking advanced level classes, working on his already terrific trombone skills, and practicing hockey with the Piedmont Predators. He does all this while maintaining honor roll status and participating in Boy Scouts. Recently he was promoted to Star Scout; the third highest rank a scout can achieve. When asked what a typical week looks like for Ethan, his father Jason said, “He goes to school all day. On Mondays we have scout meetings, Tuesdays he has hockey, Wednesdays he usually has a hockey lesson. On Thursdays there’s another hockey practice,

so Friday is really his only day off unless he has a middle school game.” He also has hockey games on the weekends. There aren’t too many adults who could keep up with that schedule, never mind a 13-year-old middle school student. Like lots of kids his age, Ethan’s tried activities that weren’t for him. Things like robotics and being part of the school council. Excelling in hockey, the trombone, scouting, and academics are much more his style. “I think he has gotten one B his entire life,” said Jason. school year due to the demands of his classes and hockey schedule, he appreciates the opportunities he’s given to try new things. Like what? Scuba diving for instance. In 2020, Ethan received his scuba diving certification and says that, while it’s difficult to do, “I think that if I put the time into it, I’ll eventually get good at it.” Surely being involved in this many activities and completing all the work associated with them can be a daunting task, especially for someone so young. However, when asked about how he handles the workload Ethan responded with his characteristic maturity. “It’s kind of hard, but I’ve been doing it for so long that I’ve gotten used to it. It’s actually pretty fun because you get to accomplish a lot and you get to do what you want to do.” Even the high school level classes he takes seem not to faze him. “There’s a bit more to the curriculum and I think you do one or two more units, and the class is a bit more fast paced, but that’s it.” To keep up with the workload, Ethan said he usually completes his homework when gets home from school or at dismissal time. This leaves him time for other activities including those he enjoys just for fun. “I like to play video games with my friends, and really like older games from the late 1990s and early 2000s.” hg

Callie Kyhl joins Walker Jones PC law firm
Virginia extends 'cocktails to go' until 2024 Gov. Glenn Youngkin has signed two bills extending the state’s “cocktails to go” policy, which allowed bars and restaurants to sell alcoholic beverages for takeout during the pandemic. The cocktails to go measure was set to expire on July 1 of this year. “Virginia’s bars and restaurants can rest a bit easier knowing cocktails to go are here to stay for another two years,” said David Wojnar, senior vice president and head of state public policy for the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, in the release. Since the program began, 18 states and Washington, D.C., have passed laws to make it permanent. Twelve states have enacted laws allowing the program to continue on a temporary basis.
Callie Kyhl has joined the law firm of Walker Jones PC, which has offices in Warrenton and Washington, Va. Kyhl’s concentration is personal injury and medical malpractice. She is admitted to the Virginia State Bar, the U.S. District Court Eastern District of Virginia and the U.S. District Court Western District of Virginia. Kyhl earned her law degree at the Mitchell Hamline School of Law in St. Paul, Minn. She received her bachelor's degree in international affairs from the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg. Kyhl is a member of the Virginia Bar Association, Fauquier County Bar Association and the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association.
Attention Wegmans shoppers: bring your reusable bags! Recently, Wegmans announced it will eliminate plastic bags companywide by the end of year. The company’s goal is to shift all customers to reusable bags, "the best option to solve the environmental challenge of single-use grocery bags," the grocery chain said in a news release. “We understand shoppers are accustomed to receiving plastic bags at checkout and losing that option requires a significant change. We are here to help our customeris transition as we focus on doing what’s right for the environment,” said Jason Wadsworth, Wegmans category merchant for packaging, energy, and sustainability. “As we’ve encountered plastic bag legislation in numerous markets, we’ve learned there’s more we can do, and a bigger impact we can make, together with our customers.” Wegmans will incentivize the use of reusable bags by charging five cents per paper bag, an approach that has proven successful in New Yorkmarkets, the release said. In stores where the company has already eliminated plastic bags -- including Fairfax, where county leaders enacted a fivecent tax on disposable plastic bags on Jan. 1 -- paper bags are used for 20-25% of transactions, while the remaining 75-80% use reusable bags, or no bag at all. "By eliminating plastic bags from the rest of our stores and focusing on transitioning our customers to reusable bags, we’re preventing approximately 345,000,000 single-use bags from going into circulation in a year’s time," the release said. The amount collected from the paper-bag charge will be donated to each store’s local food bank and United Way. In 2021, Wegmans collected and donated more than $1.7 million from the bag charge.
Amazon data center in Culpeper gets greenlight Despite efforts from community members, historical and environmental groups to deter them, the Culpeper County Board of Supervisors voted recently to pave the way for Amazon to construct a data center on Route 3 in Stevensburg. Woodbridge-based development firm Marvell Developments LLC, a subsidiary of Amazon Data Services, submitted a rezoning request for 20420 Germanna Highway - currently the location of Magnolia Equestrian Center LLC - from an A-1 (Agricultural) to LI (Light Industrial) in order to construct two data center buildings, totaling over 400,000-square-feet on approximately 230 acres. A six acre electrical substation will also be constructed on site. The total number of employees in each building will be approximately 45, but only about 32 will be on the property at any given time. Employees will be comprised of engineering technicians, data center operators, security personnel and logistics personnel.
