sually when fall arrives and the holidays are hot on its heels, it makes me sad to think how fast another year has flown by. This year, however, I don’t foresee myself having exactly that reaction. Oh 2020, don’t let the door hit you on your way out! Of course, despite everything, there’s still much to be thankful for. I’m thankful for the members of our Lifestyle Advisory Board who gave us their favorite holiday recipes so we could share them with you. I’m thankful for Piedmont Pets Veterinary Care for joining us once again as the sponsor of our Cutest Pet Contest. (That’s right. It’s time to enter the dog, cat, turtle, piglet, or llama you love for the chance to be our cover cutie in February!) And I’m thankful for our Veterans. In this issue we spotlight Josh Tredinnick of J Tred Woodworking in Bristow. An Army combat veteran wounded in Afghanistan, Josh returned home, spent a year recovering from his injuries, and today — with his wife and three sons — creates beautiful wooden signs and American flags so imbued with patriotism it’s palpable. I’m thankful for all of you, too, and wish you a happy, healthy, and delicious Thanksgiving!

Stop Sleeping on the Sofa: 3 Steps to Reduce Snoring
local expert
BY DR. TONTRA P. LOWE, DDS

re you still sleeping on the sofa because your partner cannot sleep due to your loud snoring? Are you the uncle or aunt falling asleep at the family reunion as soon as you sit down? Does your older child wet the bed and you just can’t determine a solution? If so, you are not alone. According to the American Sleep Apnea Association (SleepApnea.org), over 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is an involuntary stoppage of breathing while the person is sleeping. The airway is compromised, and breathing literally stops over and over during the sleep cycle. Over 80% of those that suffer from this condition are undiagnosed and continue to suffer needlessly along with other family members. You have options to save your sanity and your relationship.
Listen for the Symptoms It is hard NOT to hear the number one symptom of sleep apnea—snoring. Snoring is considered to be a key

indicator in the final diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). It can embarrass you in front of roommates or just plain ruin sleep for everyone in the house. Sound familiar? Another noisy symptom is teeth grinding. In children, this is especially concerning and can lead to short, fractured teeth and eventually mouth pain. Elongated episodes of bed-wetting, anxiety with sleepovers, and poor self-esteem can also sometimes be linked to an untreated airway condition. Be aware, not everyone with OSA snores, so pay attention to your body.
Seek Assistance from Your Oral Physician or Dentist Your oral physician is a great advocate for you and your family. On most health history forms, they ask about snoring. Don’t skip the question; be honest and engage in a conversation. Untreated OSA can lead to increased strokes, depression, and increased traffic and job-related accidents. Sometimes you need more than a few cups of coffee. Your dentist is the first line of defense and can get you referred

to a sleep physician for a final diagnosis. Obesity, large tonsils, type 2 diabetes, extensive wear on the teeth, and fractured teeth can all be linked.
Use Medical Insurance Benefits If Available Solutions for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea can include wearing a mask to help deliver air while sleeping called a CPAP. For those who can’t tolerate something on their face, your dentist may be able to fabricate an oral sleep appliance that keeps your throat open instead. Your child may need to see an orthodontist to address a narrow palate to get relief. It’s possible that medical insurance will help cover some of the costs for these solutions. Find a dentist experienced in working with health insurance companies and get him or her to help you bill your health care provider for these appliances. Call your dentist today and get off the sofa. Your bed partner will thank you and you’ll be full of energy at the next family reunion. ❖

Painful, Prolonged Periods? You don’t have to live that way BY SUSAN TULINO

HER EXPERTISE:

ibroids are typically benign (noncancerous) cellular growths in the uterus that can cause pain or bleeding, or pelvic pressure or heaviness. They are very common and often appear during a woman’s reproductive years. We spoke with Stephanie Spytek, MD, of Novant Health UVA Health System Lake Manassas OB/GYN about the options for treating fibroids.
WHAT ARE SOME SYMPTOMS OF FIBROIDS? You may suffer from pain, excess menstrual bleeding, vaginal bleeding between cycles, pelvic pressure, backache. Sometimes the bleeding is so severe that it could lead to anemia and the need for a blood transfusion. Some women may have no symptoms at all. Fibroids are very, very common. I want to emphasize that. HOW ARE FIBROIDS DIAGNOSED? Typically, large fibroids may be felt on routine pelvic exams. The presence of fibroids can be confirmed through an ultrasound. IF YOU HAVE FIBROIDS BUT THEY’RE NOT CAUSING ANY TROUBLE, DO THEY NEED TO BE TREATED? If they cause no symptoms, they can be left untreated and instead observed for rapid growth or symptoms.
10
{ NOVEMBER 2020 |
HOW DO YOU RECOMMEND TREATING FIBROIDS? When fibroids are causing symptoms, various treatments are available. It really does vary from patient to patient; we take an individualized approach. If symptoms are mild, we may offer medication to control the bleeding. If that doesn’t help, surgical and procedural options are available – many of which are minimally invasive. A patient’s current or future desire for fertility is one factor that’s always important to consider.
AND IF MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY ISN’T SUCCESSFUL? As a last resort, we might talk about removing the uterus – a hysterectomy. Again, that’s often done with robot-assisted or laparoscopic – or small-incision camera – surgery. But there are a lot of factors that go into making that decision. Age, for one. Does the woman want to have children or more children? Also, not all fibroids in the uterus are the same. We look at the size of them, how many and where they’re located, which helps determine the best treatment option. Fibroids don’t always grow. Many shrink with menopause.
IS OUTPATIENT SURGERY AN OPTION? Yes, many of the surgeries and procedures available are outpatient. For example, with minimally invasive surgery, the recovery tends to be much quicker than with traditional open surgery. I often quote to patients that with a minimally invasive surgical approach, they will feel 70% to 80% better in two to four weeks, even for major pelvic surgery such as a hysterectomy.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR WOMEN WHO HAVE TALKED TO THEIR DOCTORS ABOUT EXCESS BLEEDING AND ABDOMINAL PAIN – BUT HAVEN’T HAD IT ADDRESSED? Seek out a doctor who will take the time to really listen to you. Look for a doctor who has been fellowship-trained in minimally invasive surgery, as they perform these surgeries on a regular basis. ❖

Other People Everyday” mentality. This even includes two of my sons, Luke and Michael (jr)! Tell us about your experience with the HGBA. How has it supported you in your business? HGBA has been a great networking group to deepen my friendship with my fellow local business owners. I am a people lover as well as a small business lover. HGBA fits well!
When and why did you decide to join this company? After I retired from the US Navy as a helicopter pilot and intelligence officer, I became a certified financial planner. In 2015, I was searching for a new professional field and was recruited by USHA. It’s a fantastic company. USHA serves the health care needs of millions of people and offers better benefits at lower costs. I jumped in five years ago, got promoted, and now serve as a sales leader recruiting and training new agents in the area. It is the best job I have ever had.
What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals? 1. Always care more for others than for yourself, and be truly interested in others as well as yourself. 2. Try to be excellent in your knowledge of what you are doing in business and stay current. 3. Be truthful always and follow through with whatever you commit to, or promise people.
How does your business serve the local community? We are constantly networking and cooperating with other businesses to help charities like Carried to Full Term, Habitat for Humanity, etc. I am also a member of Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association which serves vets in need. I also like working with the local Chambers of Commerce in Prince William and Fauquier. And of course HGBA!
Are you from this area? If not, what brought you here and what do you like about our town? I am originally from Southern California. The Navy brought me here. I appreciate the family
Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your current profession. Seeing new agents loving their new career and the “Helping
atmosphere, love the outdoor beauty of the area, and love the proximity to the Nation’s Capital. What is your favorite season in this area, and why? Spring and fall. Warm enough to do stuff outside like riding my Harley and using our fish/ski boat. What are some hobbies you enjoy? Harley riding, fishing, boating, sporting clays, golf, welding, and videography. What is your favorite restaurant? Out of the Blue in Gainesville. Are you involved with any nonprofits? I’ve done some work with local churches and I am a fan of, and donor to, Samaritan’s Purse Charity. What was your first job, or your most interesting job prior to your current profession? My first job was working at my dad’s car dealership. I started selling cars at about 13-years-old and loved entrepreneurship. Of course my job in the military as a Navy pilot and intelligence officer was a multi-faceted world tour of danger and excitement, so that was rather interesting as well! ❖

ational Small Business Week may have been in late September, but every day is a great day to recognize our local small business owners. How can you support these entrepreneurs who sell goods and services? By purchasing from them, posting good things about them on social media, and encouraging friends and family to do the same. Here is a sampling of great vendors in our area. Be sure to order from them soon. As of November 1, there are just 54 shopping days left until Christmas! Also, don’t forget that COVID-19 has delayed shipping in many cases. The sooner you order, the quicker you will have these local goods in time for the holidays!
HAYMARKET | WWW.REPILAND.COM Rob Piland painstakingly creates silver and gold bracelets, pendants, rings, wedding bands, brooches, and other fine jewelry in a Celtic style. As he says, “At the essential center of myself is a goldsmith and artist - a creator of beauty in a world that often forgets what beauty is.” Visit his website for his creations and an online tour of his shop which takes customers on a visual journey of his creation process: sketching the concept, creation of a metal mold, dewaxing and casting, filing, and polishing.

Laura Sears
Lifestyle Food Writer and Advisory Board Member, Gainesville FAVORITE RECIPE
Butternut Squash, Sausage, and Kale Soup THE BACKSTORY This really should say, “one of my favorite recipes.” I have so many! This one though, is perfect for a family dinner or feeding a crowd of holiday visitors. Serve it with a simple salad and some bread and you’re good to go. Note: I used mild Italian sausage here but if you like more heat you can use hot sausage and add ½ teaspoon of crushed red pepper. For a vegetarian variation just skip the sausage.

{ NOVEMBER 2020 |
INGREDIENTS 1 lb Mild Italian sausage, casings removed 1 onion, diced 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 red pepper, diced 1 teaspoon dried basil 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon dried thyme 10 cups of vegetable broth 2 teaspoons kosher salt 6-8 cups of butternut squash, cut into bite size pieces 2 cans of cannellini beans, rinsed and drained 4 cups kale, trimmed and chopped DIRECTIONS 1. To make the soup first place olive oil in a large dutch oven or stock pot and sautee diced onion 3 minutes or until softened. Add in the diced pepper and then your sausage, breaking up the meat into small pieces. 2. Once the sausage is cooked add your seasonings and then your vegetable broth. Bring everything to a boil and add in the salt. 3. At this point you’ll add in the butternut squash, checking it after 5-7 minutes. You don’t want the squash to get too soft! Once it’s tender add your beans and kale and stir everything to warm it.

Southern Pecan Praline Cake THE BACKSTORY This is my favorite cake to make for Thanksgiving. It’s so easy and delicious! INGREDIENTS FOR CAKE: 1 box of Pecan Cake Mix 16 oz can of Coconut Pecan Frosting 4 eggs 3/4 cup melted butter 1 cup milk 1/2 cup chopped pecans FOR GLAZE: 14 oz can of sweetened condensed milk 3 tbsp butter 1/2 cup chopped pecans DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease or spray your baking dish. Use a rectangular dish (9"x13") or two small round pans to create a layer cake. Note: A single sheet cake tends to come out a little more moist than a double layer cake. 2. In a bowl, combine all the cake ingredients except pecans. Mix well and add chopped pecans to combine. Pour batter into baking dish. Bake for 40-50 minutes or until a toothpick placed in the center comes out clean. 3. To make the glaze, melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add condensed milk and stir. Heat through and add chopped pecans. Remove from heat and spoon the glaze over the entire cake.

Good-luck Pasta THE BACKSTORY I made this dish for my son and his teammates every week before their high school football games last year. I’m really hoping to get to do so again soon! (Makes 4 servings) INGREDIENTS 1 cup of Basil Pesto Sauce 2 tablespoons extra virgin Olive Oil 1/4 cup heavy Cream Sea Salt Black Pepper, freshly ground 1 pound Farfalle (bow tie pasta) Olives, oven roasted Parmesan, freshly grated DIRECTIONS 1. Bring 5-6 quarts of water to a boil. Add 1 teaspoon salt, stir and add pasta. Continue to stir until the water returns to a boil. Cook, uncovered, 8-10 minutes. 2. While the pasta cooks, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the pesto and mix. As the pesto starts to bubble, slowly add the cream. Stir until thoroughly combined. If needed, add some pasta water to thin the sauce. 3. Drain the cooked pasta and add to the skillet. Remove from heat and toss until the pasta is completely coated with sauce. Salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with olives. Serve with Parmesan cheese. Basic Basil Pesto Recipe Note: Recipe calls for a food processor. INGREDIENTS 3 garlic cloves, minced 1/3 cup pine nuts 2 cups fresh basil leaves 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese Sea Salt Black Pepper, freshly ground DIRECTIONS Put garlic and pine nuts in food processor and pulse a few times. Add the basil and pulse again. While the motor is running, add the olive oil slowly until the mixture has emulsified. Scape down the sides of the processor and add grated cheese. Pulse again until fully blended. Salt and pepper to taste. If not used immediately, refrigerate in an airtight container for up to a week. ❖

DESIGN 101:
Holiday Wrap up BY YARON LINETT November is upon us, and with it a desire (at least on my part!) to tie up loose ends. This month we will answer some of those questions that didn’t fit neatly into last issue’s column, but still need to be addressed. Fear not readers, these holiday tips won’t cost you a thing, and may actually save you money in the long run.
local expert THE EXPERT:
Yaron Linett
HIS EXPERTISE:
Interior Design
Yaron Linett is the principal designer of Formal Traditional, a full-service design firm located in Northern Virginia. To submit your interior design questions, drop him a note at yaron@formaltraditional. com or visit www. formaltraditional.com.
MY HOUSE WAS RECENTLY PAINTED AND NOW THE RECESSED LIGHTING ISN’T WORKING. HOW LIKELY IS IT THAT THE PAINTERS DAMAGED THEM? Damaged them, unlikely. Are they responsible? More likely. Often when painters prepare to paint a ceiling they allow the lights to dangle, especially pot lights or “cans.” When they put them back, the wires are not always as well secured as before. Most often this is the issue. If your lights use halogen bulbs, then the bulb is almost always to blame. Especially when in the ceiling and exposed to attic temperatures, halogen bulbs pretty readily give up the ghost. PRO TIP
I AM HAVING MY FLOORS REFINISHED, DO I NEED TO EMPTY THE ROOM OR JUST GET EVERYTHING OFF THE FLOOR? Technically you simply need to provide the flooring crew enough room to work; realistically you

really do need to empty the room. Even when using a “dustless” system, there will be some quantity of sawdust aerosolized and you neither want to have to clean it out of literally everything, nor breath it when you miss some. While you pack your room(s) take the time to decide if whatever you are packing is really something that you need. New floors are complimented perfectly by less clutter! PRO TIP
MY BED SQUEAKS AND SHIFTS AROUND. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
If you don’t already have an area rug under the bed with a good quality felt pad underneath, you absolutely should. It will cut down on the squeaking and shifting. If the bed has a headboard, secure it to the wall via a “French cleat.” French cleats are often used to secure cabinets to walls, but can also be used very effectively in this situation. PRO TIP
MY FRIEND’S HOUSE IS PAINTED IN A HIGH SHEEN PAINT AND I LOVE IT, SO WHY IS MY PAINTER I HAVE PLASTER WALLS REFUSING MY REQUEST AND FAR TOO FEW FOR THE SAME? OUTLETS IN MY OLDER I am guessing that your friend’s HOME. IS THERE A WAY house is a new build, one where they TO GET MORE OUTLETS took extra care to make sure that every surface was both clean and WITHOUT DAMAGING even. As much as we love sheen, the THE WALLS? higher the sheen the easier it is to see imperfections, wear, and damage to the walls. If you must have it, talk to your painter about bringing in an extra person specifically for additional wall prep. They may be more amenable. Skim lighting is the best PRO way to accurately get a TIP gauge of the condition of the walls. Take a look with a flashlight nearly parallel to the wall and see how much work you are looking at before undertaking the project.

Your best bet is to look into adding additional outlets to the baseboard or floors. We sympathize, older homes rarely keep up with today's outlet demands. Ask your electrician or designer to provide not only a plan for where the new outlets are going, but also a switching plan on the front end. You don’t want to find out after the installation that the switches aren’t where you want them to be. ❖ PRO TIP

o paint a picture of 2020 for you, I need to briefly describe 2019. That year I played some of the best shows of my career, including two sold-out tour dates with Arizona folk-rock band Tow’rs where I befriended their leading couple, Kyle and Gretta Miller. Then I drove across the country with my best friend, stopping in Flagstaff to record a couple of songs with Kyle. Flew back out to finish recording the album, sold out of my first run of merchandise, did a hazy cowboy photoshoot with Culpeper photographer Gina Nilce, and got hyped for my first big release after six years of gigging nonstop and working my butt off. Oh, and I fell in love with that best friend, and we started a band together. This year has been different. I was preparing to release the first single from my new record when the whole country screeched to a cacophonous halt. Pandemic. Quarantine. No more shows. My longest performance drought in years, I ended up going five months without a gig. The freeze hit hard – not just for me, but for the whole music industry. Because digital music cut the value of the music industry from about $20 billion in the late 90s to about $7 billion in 2015, musicians now rely on profit from live performances and merchandise sales. While artists are stuck at home with shows and tours cancelled, groups like the National Independent Venue Association are campaigning Congress to #SaveOurStages so

that there are venues for us to perform in when traditional concerts are safe again. It’s not all doom and gloom though. The best artists are creative and flexible, and we’re showing off those skills by adapting to these new circumstances with gusto. With 50 tour dates cancelled, Kyle and Gretta of Tow’rs have taken the time to add on to their home studio, invest in new gear, and promote their recording services to other artists. For their own new album, the band had to compose together remotely instead of in the same room as planned. The socially distanced collaboration has been successful; on social media, Tow’rs is teasing the release of a new album for this month. In early March, DC indie-soul band Oh He Dead flew out to Los Angeles to meet with executives at talent and publishing agencies. “It was really a dream-cometrue movie moment for us,” says founding member Andy Valenti. They had just begun planning an international tour for 2020. Instead, Oh He Dead started doing “Jammy Jamz,” a livestream concert series (in matching

pajamas,no less). “Obviously, interacting through screens is far from ideal, but it was nice to have some direct conversations and build relationships with the people who support us,” Andy said. Like Tow’rs, Oh He Dead has gotten better at collaborating remotely. Andy and guitarist Alex Salser have been passing ideas back and forth every day, writing enough songs for another two albums. In Culpeper, Tanner Carlton and his brother Mason launched their record and podcast label Rixey in August 2019. Rather than hosting artists in their studio, a house off of Route 29 optimized for laidback collaboration and productivity, they’ve focused on helping their contributors produce from home. “We effectively decentralized a lot of the content we were helping create,” Tanner said. “It was an important step in our work.” Putting out 15 records and six podcasts featuring local creators, Rixey has managed to stay productive despite the setbacks. Remember that #SaveOurStages campaign I mentioned earlier? We’re lucky in this area

that most of our music venues are actually breweries and wineries. “Once we were able to reopen the taproom, we could begin to talk about how and when to bring back live music,” said Dan Barret of Old Bust Head Brewing Company in Vint Hill. “We work in a creative industry, and have the opportunity to help support other creative, talented people in our area, and we don’t take that lightly.” For their large, covered outdoor space, Dan has now been booking mostly solo and duo acts who can provide a good amount of original music. As for me, I released three singles in March, April, and May. I was planning to release the Quiet Corners album in June, but delayed it until September 2 because of the social tumult and unrest. Five days after release, it had been streamed 62,000 times in more than 60 countries on Spotify. I can’t tour to promote the release and I don’t have a team of professionals to help me, but my friends and family poured love on the record, and I've learned to invest in online relationships and make the most of my social media presence. It’s easy to get down about challenging circumstances, but as Kyle beautifully put it, “Music is still healing, and it’s a room we can all go to inside ourselves to connect with the world or with someone else’s story . . . We are not alone and will get through this if we do it together.” I’m thankful to be a part of something so powerful. ❖ ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Maddi Mae is an indieAmericana musician and music educator based in Remington. STORY AND PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK

oth Northern Virginia natives Josh from Fairfax County and his wife Erica from Prince William the Tredinnicks met in the eighth grade while attending Emmanuel Christian School in Manassas. If you met them today, you could imagine the two strikingly opposite personalities bonding them together instantly. Josh is quiet, behind-the-scenes, with an easy smile, while Erica’s outspoken but with a kind and friendly demeanor that makes her easy to get to know. “We never did things the easy way,” say the Tredinnicks, who live in Bristow. They married and had children while they were very young. About a year and a half into their marriage, Josh expressed a desire to join the military. He was unable to ignore the call to serve any longer. But while Josh was confident this is what he wanted, Erica was reluctant. Growing up the daughter of a lifetime civil servant provided her the knowledge of the sacrifice this type of career involves. “My dad loved being a police officer,” Erica says, “but it’s not glamorous or easy and can be terrifying at times.” While at the time she wasn’t sure this was the right decision, looking back now she wouldn’t change it.
The experience of Josh’s Army career was a profound, life-changing one for the family. “It made us cling to each other; it grew him into a family man, a soldier, and our hero,” said Erica. When he completed boot camp, Josh and Erica packed up their two kids (at the time) under two, and left Virginia and their families for the first time. They headed to Fort Drum, New York, where they quickly found another kind of family with Army friends; people they are still close with to this day. Josh deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 and Erica and the kids headed back to Virginia, which ended up being a real blessing. During his deployment, Josh was on foot patrol when an explosion went off under him. The improvised explosive device threw him over top of the vehicle he had been riding in, with a hard landing on the other side. He suffered a broken hip, broken back, a traumatic brain injury, and several other injuries. Josh was sent to Walter Reed where he underwent surgery and began a healing process that took almost a year. “Recovery isn’t quick but I did everything I could to speed it up as I wanted to return to duty and get back to work,” says Josh. While he wasn’t able to deploy again like he wished, he was able to return to Fort Drum. But ultimately,
{ NOVEMBER 2020 |
after the realization that his injuries had rendered him mentally and physically changed, he decided that retiring from the military was the right thing to do. It was also one of the hardest decisions he had to make. After leaving the military, Josh finished college and began searching for a career that made him feel the kind of pride and honor he felt being in the Army. He didn’t have much luck. Confounding his search was the fact that he was still struggling with not being the same person he was before the injury. “It affected all aspects of my life,” he says.

I found that working with my hands and creating something of beauty from simple, raw materials gives me a sense of accomplishment that is truly the best form of therapy. My love for the military and our country flows directly into every custom flag and sign I create.” Left: Erica and Josh with their three sons, Mason, Micah, and Miles. Below: Josh on a mountain in the Wardak Province of Afghanistan during his 2009 deployment. All three Treddinick boys are proud of their dad’s patriotism and want to be like him when they grow up.
Erica says that Josh’s recovery was a long and trying road filled with many life lessons. The whole family came to realize that resilience was crucial for them to heal together. “When raising kids and trying to assist Josh in finding a new normal, you have to be willing to accept the bumps in the road and know that there’s always something to be grateful for,” she says. Josh’s sacrifice and determination serves as an awesome example for their sons, 14-year-old Mason, 13-year-old Micah, and 9-year-old Miles. After trying out a few jobs here and there, Josh had the opportunity to train with Dog Tag Bakery, an organization whose mission is to “build a bridge to employment and a productive civilian life for veterans and military families that have served our country so well.” The fellowship program exposes veterans to five months of education from Georgetown University, as well as real life work experience. The insight from this experience was invaluable, says Josh. Josh began to envision what it would look like for him to own a business and be his own boss. “Starting a business as your sole source of income is scary and takes
38

sacrifice from everyone involved,” he says. Woodworking had always been a hobby for him but now he began to hone his talent and create his own designs. The ability to work with his hands and transform a raw material into something of value that he was proud to put his name on began the family business they named J Tred Woodworking. Giving credit to his wife and their three boys for their support and love, Josh explains that Erica keeps them all in line while putting just as much time into the business as he does. “She is strong in all the ways I am not and I surely couldn’t do this without her,” explains Josh. Erica echoes this sentiment, saying “his strengths are my
HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE
}
weaknesses and vice versa.” J Tred Woodworking started slowly and built its customer base through local vendor and craft shows. As the business grew, so did the number of shows, customers, and woodworking designs. The momentum was building rapidly but then the challenges of the pandemic caused them to have to pivot. Without in-person shows and events, Erica and Josh launched the J Tred Woodworking website. They also began reaching out to other local businesses in an effort to get their designs in front of customers in different ways. One example is their relationship with The Farm Brewery at Broad Run. Erica asked if J Tred Woodworking could donate a flag to be featured on a wall in the brewhouse. This led to a partnership allowing J Tred Woodworking to sell its designs at the brewery. But this is just one way the community has supported this veteran and his family. “We have the best customers around,” says Erica. “I am glad that Josh has followed his dreams and started this business,” says Erica. J Tred Woodworking recently hit 3000 followers on Facebook and continues to create designs for families to treasure as a keepsake for years to come. Handmade, rustic, framed wood flags are dedicated to first responders, patriotic Americans, or military branches, and the J Tred Old Dominion collection is a one-of-a-kind tribute to Virginia, available in shadow box or signature design. Signs are also created by category: bathroom, dog, faith, family, funny, home, inspirational, kitchen, love, and parenting. J Tred’s Instagram feed always features new designs available for purchase. Add J Tred Woodworking on Facebook and Instagram and check out jtredwoodworking.com to see which design you need in your home and which designs would make great gifts for friends and family. It’s the perfect way to support this hardworking, inspiring veteran family. ❖

s I’ve written before, this time of year has always been my favorite. And if there’s one true wine season, for me at least, it’s autumn. There’s still enough sun and warmth to desire a crisp white wine or a saignée produced rose’, and just enough temperature drop to make me sweater up for a red wine, with or without food, just one that stirs any sense that’s ready to be shaken. All this rings especially true this year, as up has been knocked down, inside has been turned out, and all that is good has been seriously challenged by what the hell? Still, wine remains true to itself and to the ones who love it, regardless of anything that’s looking to disrupt its peace. Of course, November wouldn’t be complete without Thanksgiving, the greatest wine weekend of all. And for this year’s feast, I return to the classics – as opposed to last year’s incredible Italian choices – with a straight-up serving of chardonnay and pinot noir, the two Burgundian varieties that go with just about every meal ever cooked. And in honor of what I consider the Burgundy of America, I choose a producer from the Willamette Valley (Oregon), whose wines are making their way into my heart. In 2008, the husband/wife team of Ken Pahlow and Erica Landon launched their dream of producing

their own Oregon wine, with their label Walter Scott Wines. A multi-decade veteran of the Oregon wine world, Ken’s resume is certainly impressive, with a 14 year run with St. Innocent Winery, under the direction of famed producer Mark Vlossak. There he worked in production, sales and harvests. In 2009, he joined the harvest team at Patricia Green Cellars, where he first began producing the Walter Scott wines…more on that in a moment. A year later, he joined the team at the prestigious Evening Land Vineyards, managing their Northwest sales and distribution, all the while working harvest alongside winemaker Dominique Lafon. These efforts allowed Ken to not only develop his own winemaking skills, but to cultivate and hone his own world-class palate, essential to producing world-class wines. As for Erica, her experience in the world of restaurants and wine education brings additional dynamics to their operation. From managing the wine program for Timberline Lodge's Cascade Dining Room to working as both sommelier and general manager for the Ponzi family's Dundee Bistro,
Yes, the Walter Scott La Comb Verte Chardonnay 2018 and the Walter Scott La Comb Verte Pinot Noir 2018, are something to get excited about.

Erica’s wine train has traveled many tracks. Other notable successes include a wine directorship at one of Portland's top restaurants, Ten 01, which received the Best of Wine Spectator Award of Excellence on her watch. As for wine education, certainly a love of mine, Erica has shared her passion and excitement about wine through teaching at Wine & Spirits Archive, the Wine & Spirits Education Trust, and the International Sommelier Guild…all regarded as topnotch curriculum in wine education. For the record, the name Walter Scott was chosen to honor two men of great importance to Ken - his grandfather Walter, who lived an adventurous life as a flight engineer and pilot, as well as a home builder and motorcyclist, and Ken’s nephew Scott, another fearless, adventurous spirit whose life in this world was short-lived. Much in the way these two influenced Ken, their verve lives on in his wines; as Ken was taught by both, ‘there are no limits to what you can accomplish when you set your mind to it.”
LEFT: The vineyards at Walter Scott Wines are located in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, an area many consider the Burgundy region of America. RIGHT: Ken Pahlow and Erica Landon of Walter Scott wines.
About the wines… I have always loved great chardonnay. To me, it’s truly the most versatile white wine grape produced. Possessing enormous breadth, the Walter Scott La Comb Verte Chardonnay 2018 proves just that. Ken and Erica are equally firm in their belief in Willamette Valley Chardonnay, and you’ll be as well when you drink it. This is classic chardonnay, true to its place, generous in its farming, and cooperative in the cellar. It doesn’t get in its own way nor does it try to be something it’s not, and Ken makes sure that neither happens. The aromatics are extraordinary, the acid is precise and the textural layers of lemony, apple-ish fruit and flowery earth are infinite. It’s perfect and will be sitting on my Thanksgiving table in its own grouping. Playing big brother to its chardonnay sister is the Walter Scott La Comb Verte Pinot Noir 2018, another ridiculously beautiful wine. First produced in 2009, at

the Patricia Green Cellars winery, where Ken traded harvest work for winemaking space, WS LCV PN is, in many ways, Ken’s signature bottling. The one that started it all, if you will. Composed of a variety of small vineyard sites from in and around the volcanic Eola-Amity Hills, this pinot noir gets about 10 months in the barrel, just enough to settle down the acidic nature of the fruit without overtaking the core of the wine. The fruit center is dark cherry and it’s surrounded by spices and earth tones. It’s a showcase wine that also knows how to share the stage. As Ken and Erica will both tell you, the La Combe Verte bottlings are the “foundation for every choice we make in the winery, directly reflecting our reputation, philosophy, and lifestyle.” La Combe Verte translates to The Green Fault, or The Green Valley, and is a tribute to both the incredible Willamette Valley and to Patricia Green Cellars, where it all began. Additionally, it’s an homage to the late great Patty Green herself, who gave Walter Scott wines their first home… essentially, it is Patricia Green Cellar's "fault" that they were able to start this project. With a collective focus on tradition, terroir, vine and fruit, Walter Scott wines exemplify the eternity chardonnay and pinot noir, and the beauty of the Willamette Valley. And for approximately $30, you can have two of the finest Oregon wines produced. If your travels are local, head to Knead Wine in Middleburg and Ashburn Wine Shop in, you guessed it, Ashburn. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, and until next time, Happy Vino’ing! ❖

Mountain Lion Sighting?
A Haymarket resident spotted a large creature that appeared to be a long-tailed cat on a trail cam earlier this month. Jennifer Farmer's video posted to the Facebook page Western Prince William Chatter showed a blurry but feline-looking creature cross a clearing in the rain. In the comments, Farmer says her family has seen the usual wildlife on the trail camera -- deer, coyotes and even a bear -- but nothing that looked like the animal on the video. Mountain lion sightings happen from time to time around Northern Virginia, though the state declared the animals extinct nearly a decade ago. You can see Farmer's video at InsideNoVa.com.
Effort to Stop Development Plans Derailed
Showing the deep roots of the community, the cemetery behind Mount Pleasant Baptist Church is important to the Carver Road community. Some gravestones go back to the 1800s. Provided photo.
An effort to derail Prince William County’s small area development plans along U.S. 29 fell short at the Board of County Supervisors meeting recently after a handful of residents expressed concerns about overdevelopment near the historical Black Settlement neighborhood in Gainesville. After residents and county leaders successfully stopped a plan for Dominion Energy to run power lines through the area in 2017, a handful of public commenters said that elected officials were just doing so to allow for more residential and commercial development around Carver Road. “To our surprise, county staff turned right around and began the Route 29 small area plan with the goal of increased development …,” said Joyce Hudson, a member of the Alliance to Preserve Carver Road. “It really felt like the power lines were opposed so that development could occur.”
Battlefield Mourns Tragic Loss
Battlefield High School is mourning the loss of teaching assistant Drew Roadarmel, who was killed in a car crash in New Jersey. Roadarmel's father is an assistant principal at the school in Haymarket, her younger brother is a senior there and one of her cousins is a firstyear teacher in the science department. Her mother is a teacher at nearby Bull Run Middle School. Roadarmel graduated from Battlefield in 2015 and studied at George Mason University for her master's degree in special education and teaching. "I use the term 'Bobcat Family' often, and the Roadarmels are truly a Bobcat Family," Principal Ryan Ferrera wrote in an email to the school community. "We will have a difficult time as we grieve this tragic loss and surround the Roadarmel Family with our love, thoughts, and prayers."
U.S. Army Museum to open on Veterans Day at Fort Belvoir
The National Museum of the United States Army at Fort Belvoir will open on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. The museum, on a publicly accessible area of the military installation, will be the first and only museum to tell the entire history of the U.S. Army since its establishment in 1775. “The U.S. Army and the American Soldier forged the birth of our nation,” said Secretary of the Army, Ryan D. McCarthy. “The National Army Museum will be a place for members of the total Army family to gather and share their stories, while also creating an opportunity for The National Museum of the United States Army, on a publicly accessible area of Fort visitors to connect with our Belvoir, will open on Veterans Day. The museum will open with enhanced health and safety measures for visitors. Free, timed-entry tickets will be required to manage visitor capacity and provide an optimal experience to visitors.
