ovember is one of my favorite months, and not just because Thanksgiving is around the corner. It’s one of my favorites because November is when we celebrate Veterans Day. My dad did two tours in Korea and my husband spent twenty years in the Navy. It’s important to recognize and honor the men and women who’ve protected our country on Veterans Day and, frankly, every day. In this issue, you’ll find a wonderful feature on three such Veterans. Carlos Molina, Richard Eagan, and Aaron Roth spent years in the Air Force, Army, and Marines, respectively. Now they all live right here in Gainesville and recently took the time to speak with contributor Sue Baldani about their experiences in the military and the things they learned. I think we can all learn a lot from them. Beyond these local heroes you’ll get to meet Teagan Leach, a budding baseball star in Haymarket, explore Jennifer Powell’s educational shop, Teachables, in Bristow, discover the mouthwatering creations at Brianne Hout and Jocelyn King’s new Nothing Bundt Cakes bakery in Gainesville, and meet the utterly inspirational Claudette Renalds, a highly successful Christian author in Haymarket whose first book was published when she was 74. Have a healthy and happy Thanksgiving, thank you, Veterans, for keeping our great country safe, and, if you’re a proud pet parent, don’t forget to enter your cat, bird, ferret, pup or pig in our 2022 Cutest Pet Contest at piedmontlifestyle.com!

Jarid Tareen, MD

Manassas gardener gets ‘back’ to her roots Woman finds relief through minimally invasive spine surgery close to home

Jarid Tareen, MD is an orthopedic spine surgeon at UVA Spine Manassas who specializes in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted spinal surgeries. For more information about spine services at UVA Spine Manassas, visit UVAHealth. com/spinemanassas.

Debbie Harvey and her husband, Jim.

A

Manassas resident for nearly 40 years, Debbie Harvey, 67, struggled with chronic back pain for as long as she could remember. She assumed it was the result of aging and an old hamstring injury caused by a fall off a ladder years ago. When Harvey started having shooting pain down the back of her leg, she began to think it could be something more. “It felt like someone was poking hot irons down my leg,” she recalled. The pain was so crippling that she was practically crawling up the stairs at the end of the day. Harvey was concerned about her ability to keep caring for her ailing mother, so she finally decided to go to a doctor.

FINDING HOPE FOR HEALING The first physician she saw recommended a complicated surgery that left Harvey riddled with anxiety and questioning whether seeking care for her back was the right decision. “I left that appointment in tears,” she said.

6

{ NOVEMBER 2021 |

She then tried physical therapy in an attempt to avoid surgery, but that only increased her pain and frustration. Her physical therapist recommended she see Jarid Tareen, MD, an orthopedic spine surgeon at UVA Spine Manassas who specializes in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted spinal surgeries. After a neurologist confirmed that the damage to Harvey’s sciatic nerve – which was responsible for the shooting pain down her leg – wasn’t significant, Tareen recommended she undergo a minimally invasive spinal fusion. “A minimally invasive spinal fusion is performed through two small incisions on either side of the spine,” Tareen explained. “The bone and disc that are compressing the nerve are removed with a series of instruments and replaced with a metal cage to help give the spine support.” “Minimally invasive techniques improve postoperative pain and recovery time for patients compared to traditional ‘open’ surgery,” he added. Still, Harvey was apprehensive about

HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

pursuing surgery, so she waited a few weeks before returning to Tareen’s office. When Tareen took the time to explain everything in detail once again, Harvey knew she’d finally found the right option to relieve her chronic pain. “The fact that he sent me to a neurologist for a second opinion and took the time to make sure I was comfortable with what was happening convinced me to schedule the surgery.” On Jan. 29, 2021, Harvey underwent a minimally invasive spinal fusion at L4 to L5 and L5 to S1. When the anesthesia wore off after her surgery, it was the first time in years that Harvey awakened without pain shooting down her leg. But that wasn’t the only surprise she experienced that day. Tareen gave Harvey his personal cell phone number so she could call him with any questions or concerns after she was discharged from the hospital. “He even called me personally to see how I was doing while I was recovering at home,” she said. “I couldn’t have asked for better care.” Two weeks later at her follow-up appointment, Harvey stood up out of a chair with no assistance. Tareen and his staff were thrilled with her progress. By April, Harvey was back to doing what she loved most: gardening and spending time with family.

‘DON’T WAIT FOR IT TO GET BETTER’ Chronic pain can interfere with your daily life, keeping you from enjoying time with your loved ones or accomplishing daily tasks. Harvey urges anyone experiencing chronic pain to seek care sooner rather than later. “Don’t wait for it to get better on its own because it doesn’t,” she stated. “You don’t have to travel far away to find relief.” Harvey credits Tareen with the marked improvement in her quality of life and encourages others to seek help for their back pain. “Always get a second opinion, and always ask questions,” she advised. “Even if it takes two or three trips to the doctor to get you to make the right decision for your health, just do it."

Having both proudly served in the Air Force, Steve and Jenn Powell opened Teachables to serve the needs of educators and learners alike.

enn Powell has a passion for education, having been a teacher for 12 years. Several years ago, after moving to the Manassas area, she noticed a need for a new kind of store and immediately thought of how she could turn her dream into a reality. “We moved here from North Carolina in 2017, where I was an elementary school teacher. We had a great educational supply store there that we would visit often,”

remembers Powell. “When I searched here, there was nothing like the previous store unless I wanted to drive two hours in traffic. I came home and told my husband how frustrated I was, and he said, ‘Now that’s a business we should start.’” And the idea of Teachables was born. After four years of hard work, partially amid a pandemic, Jenn and Steve Powell opened their educational supply store this past

August with a celebratory ribbon-cutting ceremony. Located at 10302 Bristow Center Drive, Teachables is the newest business in the lively Bristow Center Shopping Center, just steps away from Duck Donuts and AR Workshop. “We love Bristow and Gainesville. It's less of the hustle and bustle, but still a very engaging and family community,” says Jenn. The challenging times also inspired

Teachables and its Bristow locale. “We live and work in the area, and we saw how parents and teachers were struggling with virtual learning and keeping kids engaged,” shares Jenn, who is the mother of three children. “Other stores may have a few items at the beginning of the school year, but we will have it all the time. As education evolves, we will too.” Teachables specializes in classroom décor, math and reading manipulatives, books, workbooks, educational toys, posters, puppets, fidget items, backpacks, stationary supplies, and so much more. Jenn adds that they sell “anything to engage the mind and make learning a little more fun.” Teachables has plans to branch out with laminating services as well.

The Teachables store is colorfully lined with unique and interesting merchandise, making the buying experience much more hands-on and engaging. Jenn says, “The best lessons try to use all of the senses. Engage the senses and you engage the mind. At Teachables, we try our best to sell items that help learners connect the dots in education. Keep it fun, keep it interesting, let learning be loved.” Both Jenn and her husband, Steve, are prior US military, having proudly served in the Air Force. Tuesdays, Jenn is quick to point out that the store is not just for teachers. “We specialize in the needs of many different types of education, whether it is a particular subject, homeschooling, special needs, infancy throughout. Teachables is for everyone!” Teachables has a variety of special events, such as book readings, puppet shows, and fundraising opportunities, all in a welcoming environment. The store recently hosted a bedtime stories event for children of all ages, where kids were invited to wear their PJs, bring their favorite stuffy, eat popcorn, all while listening to fun stories. Teachables is open Mondays through Fridays from 10am6pm and Saturdays from 10am-4pm. The store is closed on Sundays. At that time, he had no idea how the world was about to change. “The Twin Towers were hit right as I was finishing up boot camp, so I was technically the first class that graduated after that,” he said. “I immediately went into active war time.” All of his combat deployments were in Afghanistan, so he knew the country well. This past summer, years after leaving the Marines, he returned. “I went back over when Kabul was shutting down,” said Roth. He arrived there in mid-July and spent time helping people get out before the August 31 deadline. When he headed back home, he was in for quite a nice surprise. “My wife Kayla was extra concerned about this last trip, and when I came home she surprised me and had all the neighbors out to welcome me,” he said. “It was nice to see how patriotic everyone still is. There were probably over 40 people there and they were waving

COMMAND SERGEANT MAJOR RICHARD EAGAN Army (Active duty: 1965 to 1993) During the turmoil of the Vietnam War, Richard Eagan headed to the recruitment office as soon as he turned 18. “I went to basic training in August of 1965 and graduated from Advanced Individuals Training at another post in January 1966,” he said. By the end of that month, he was on a plane heading for a war zone. “I was a mechanic when I started, and in late May of 1966, our platoon leader was killed and two of our NCOs wounded,” said Eagan. “I then became more aware but never afraid and just focused on doing my job.”

What the military does, much like a sports team, is to make you become part of a unit, and collectively, you figure out how to do whatever you have to do. We were compelled to work and live with whomever was there. It didn’t matter what their nationality was, it didn’t matter what their race was, or where they came from. His first deployment to Vietnam lasted 18 months and he returned once again in 1968 for another 18 months. “I became a professional soldier very, very early on.”

One of the things that attracted him to the military was the camaraderie. “What the military does, much like a sports team, is to make you become part of a unit, and collectively, you figure out how to do whatever you have to do,” he said. “We were compelled to work and live with whomever was there. It didn’t matter what their nationality was, it didn’t matter what their race was, or where they came from none of that mattered.” When he looks back at his military career, what also stands out for him is the potential of every individual who served alongside him. “I was most impressed with everyone’s ability to do almost anything. I realized that when people are given the tools, the training, and the time, they can do whatever you need them to do.” He said he identifies himself as a high school graduate who joined the Army with no purpose and no direction. “When I retired, I was a Command Sergeant Major,” said Eagan. “That doesn’t happen without a lot of people spending a whole lot of time and love on you. And, without you spending a whole lot of time and love on a whole bunch of people.” Today, Eagan lives in Gainesville with his wife Loretta. “She had the harder job,” he said. “My hours were erratic; my days were erratic. We spent over seven years apart and some of that time was when the kids were in high school. She is a very strong woman.”

MASTER SERGEANT CARLOS MOLINA Air Force (Active duty: 1987 to 2007) When Carlos Molina was a senior in a college, he spotted an Air Force recruitment center while driving one day. He decided to pull over, walk in, and get some information. A couple of days later, he returned to sign up. “I always had a passion for airplanes,” he said. After basic training in San Antonio, Texas, he went on to Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi for technical training. His first duty station was Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Delaware. Then, he was deployed. “My first deployment was for Operation Just Cause in 1989 in Panama, where I stayed for six weeks,” said Molina. “My next deployment was Desert Shield in August of 1990 and then Desert Storm in January 1991. After the actual war, it changed to Desert Calm in March 1991 and that’s where I

He also found himself in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2002. “For the first 14 years, I was gone over 4000 days,” said Molina. “I was able to perform different jobs. First I was doing avionics maintenance on C5 aircraft and then I was on the crew of C5s. I flew to over 100 countries. I then did some HUMINT [covert intelligence gathering] with the Defense Intelligence Agency before they sent me back to Texas in 2002 to run the technical school there.” Even with all of that, the one thing that really stands out for him are the people. “You

OUR NEIGHBORS

Have Faith in Yourself and Follow Your Dreams How one Christian author gained great success in her golden years BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOS BY HOUSE OF AMSEL PHOTOGRAPHY

W

hen writing fiction, authors are able to let their imaginations run free and transfer the stories in their heads onto paper. Readers then get to live vicariously through the characters that these writers have brought to life. Some writers wait longer than others to share their passion and talent with the world. “I had the desire to write, but I was 67 years old before I pursued it,” said Claudette Renalds, a successful Christian author and Haymarket resident. “I always had a wild imagination and stories playing in my head like a movie.” She has always enjoyed reading and since retirement, has read thousands of books. “I could never get enough of reading,” she said. “I grew up on a dairy farm in South Georgia where we didn’t have access to many books except for the school library.” One Sunday in 2013, the pastor of her church encouraged the congregation to pursue their dreams and goals and share them with others. “My friend Carolyn Abbott met me outside and asked me what my dreams and goals were,” said Renalds. “Out of the blue I said I would like to write and she said, ‘Well, just go home and write.’ So I did, and wrote a story, By the Sea, that had been in my head. That was the beginning of my first contemporary romance.” When Renalds first started writing it, she

22

{ NOVEMBER 2021 |

planned on sharing it online with family and friends, but her sister, Paulette Zawadzki, told her she had to pursue getting it published. It was that good. “I joined Capital Christian Writers Fellowship in Northern Virginia, took workshops, and in 2018, I attended the Greater Philadelphia’s Christian’s Writer’s Conference,” she said. “There, quite by accident, I found a publisher for By the Sea!” Deb Haggerty of Elk Lake Publishing was on one of the panels, and later, when Renalds saw her standing alone, she walked up to Haggerty and handed her the first chapter of her book. Shortly after leaving the conference, Haggerty sent an email saying she loved it and asked her to send the whole thing. “It was like a miracle,” said Renalds. “She believed in me, and at age 74, Elk Lake published By the Sea in 2019. It’s a sweet little romance about a young man, who’s a famous writer, who has lost his faith. He

is introduced to a young pregnant widow with twin boys whose husband has died in Iraq.” Later on, this encounter changes the trajectory of his life. By the Sea was chosen as the finalist for the 2020 Blue Ridge Christian Conference Selah Awards. Renalds second book, Journey to Hope: The Legacy of a Mail-Order Bride is a historical romance published in 2020, and the third one, Jonah’s War, was just released in August of this year. In this latest book, she focuses on two characters that are as different as night and day. It opens with a male police officer arresting a female social worker who has been accused of sexual abuse and distributing drugs in the neighborhood. He learns very quickly that he has made a huge mistake. The social worker lives in the neighborhood because she wants to help people and has a heart for social justice. “I had an outline of this book for five

years,” she said. “But it really came together in and around the election. All the disunity, turmoil, racial injustice, hatred, and the bitterness and the unforgiveness surrounding the last election just hurt my heart. Even families were divided. So I wanted to write something I thought Jesus would do about the problems that were going on.” The time she spent as the Director of Children’s Ministry at the Church of the Apostles in Fairfax also had a big influence

{ NOVEMBER 2021 |

on the storyline. “I had a lot of dealings with the youth and I saw how they were caught up in drug and alcohol addictions and how they had to suffer with all the racial injustice. I started thinking about how I could write something to do with that. I write about what God lays on my heart.” Renalds’ style has been compared to Karen Kingsbury, the well-known Christian author, and she has also been called the Christian version of Nicholas Sparks. She may have started later in life, but she has been very prolific since then. She is currently working on another book that is due out in 2022. “It’s based on three days in Afghanistan, and things are changing there so quickly that I’m not sure how this one is going to play out,” she said. For those looking to pursue a career in writing, regardless of age, she suggests taking the time to study the craft and going to workshops and conferences. In addition, reading a lot of books which enable you to recognize a good book as opposed to a notso-good book. “Also, get into a writing group and let them help you,” said Renalds. “And don’t despise criticism, because good criticism is what made me be able to write like I do.” Her books can be ordered on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and from other book outlets. She and her husband, Charles Renalds, whom she met in college, live in Haymarket, and he is a huge supporter of her writing. “You are never too old to learn something new,” said Renalds. “Have faith in yourself and embrace the desires of your heart.”

AMAZING KIDS

born to play base ball TEAGAN LEACH is a rising star and a real sweetheart BY FRANNIE BARNIES PHOTOS COURTESY OLIVIA BRENNAN

B

efore Haymarket teen Teagan Leach could walk, he would pick up and throw anything he could get his hands on. Most parents would attempt to steer their toddler away from doing that, but Teagan’s mom Olivia saw an opportunity. She removed the breakable items and instead made targets on her walls. When he got a little older, she made a strike zone down a hallway in their house. In addition to being a super cool mom, Olivia is a baseball lover who aspired to be the first female MLB pitcher. She knows baseball and saw something in her son at that young age. Something that many people throughout the country have learned about Teagan by the tender age of 13. Teagan has played organized baseball since he was three. Since then, his skill and talent have continued to not only grow but excel. You could say he consistently knocks it out of the park. He has always played up, playing with kids in two age ranges above him and this summer, he was invited to the Perfect Game 12U Select Fest, an elite tournament where

28 of the best youth players in his age group from around the country are invited to play, compete, and learn. “It is an honor to be invited to Select Fest,” Olivia said. “Teagan was one of the top 14 athletes from the East selected and traveled to Atlanta to play in an exhibition game. They treated the athletes very well and provided new equipment and special events and activities. It’s good motivation and a glimpse of what comes next,” she added. Travel baseball can be intense with long double headers and tournaments and of course lots of travel, but the dedication pays off. Teagan played for Upper Deck’s travel teams in Florida since he was eight, but two years ago, he had the opportunity to play with Mike Colangelo’s Stars Futures national team. He was invited to play with five other teams in the Elite World Series but chose the Stars because he liked the way Colangelo coached and enjoyed the team dynamics. For two summers he played with Star Futures and learned much during the few weeks. Once again Olivia saw an opportunity to foster Teagan’s love of the sport and felt that he would have more opportunity in Northern Virginia with a coach he admired so in January 2021, they moved to Haymarket where he now plays for the Stars full time. He is a left-handed

“Teagan is well beyond his years. He has an unbelievable feel for the game, his arm strength is amazing, and he is pitching at the high school level. He’s also an exceptional young man, well behaved, and you can see how much he cares for his teammates” pitcher – a rare and coveted position in baseball – and first baseman. “I like the mental part of baseball and it’s fun being part of the team,” Teagan said. When asked how he liked the Perfect Game Select Fest, he added “It was exciting when they called my name to be part of it and it was a great experience.” He keeps in touch with many of the players he’s met from around the country through Instagram and sometimes gets to travel and play against them. He has traveled to Texas to play with a California team. “He’s well beyond his years. He has an unbelievable feel for the game, his arm strength is amazing, and he is pitching at the high school level. He fields multiple pitches which you don’t typically see at his age,” Mike Colangelo said. But beyond his talent, Teagan is known for being a great kid. Olivia describes him as shy at first, but very easy going and gets along with everyone. “He is an exceptional young man, well behaved, and you can see how much he cares for his teammates,” Colangelo added.

HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

Olivia adds, "As much as I love watching him play, what I love the most is how Teagan is always giving back. Whether it's helping a teammate, teaching neighborhood children the game or offering advice to help another player who is struggling...he'll always give his time. That's what I'm most proud of." Outside of playing baseball, he loves to watch and analyze baseball. He keeps up with any professional player who is injured and knows the rankings of MLB teams. His favorite team is the L.A. Dodgers, and his favorite player is Mookie Betts. “I like the way he plays the game and the energy he has. He’s good with all parts of the field, hitting, fielding, you name it,” Teagan said. He will ride his bike, but when he’s outside, what he really wants to do is practice hitting and throwing. In fact, when they looked for a house here in Northern Virginia, an ample yard with enough space to do just that was the primary criteria. So what’s next for Teagan? He will continue to play travel baseball, and compete in national tournaments. He wants to play baseball in high school and college and aspires to play professionally. Keep your eye on this remarkable young man, because as he continues this trajectory, it’s almost certain we’ll be watching him on television in no time.

Bringing the Joy Nothing Bundt Cakes comes to Gainesville BY BETH LUNA | PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK

“A

ny occasion can be made better with cake!” said Jocelyn King, co-owner/co-manager of the Gainesville bakery Nothing Bundt Cakes, which opened in April. “My first two experiences with these cakes were at funerals, actually, so you might think I would have a negative connotation, but no!” The bakery franchise specializes in perfect bundt cakes baked daily and expertly decorated. From red velvet to lemon to fall’s pumpkin spice, and from weddings to birthdays, and yes, funerals – Nothing Bundt Cakes is built to elevate all types of celebrations. Jocelyn and co-owner and partner Brianne Hout both live in Gainesville. The two met as youth ministers, working together on activities and budgets. “Jocelyn and I are both mothers – we each have four children and we hadn’t been in the workforce for over a decade,” shared Brianne. “Jocelyn and her husband Jason had tried the cakes at Nothing Bundt Cakes in Fairfax, and they were such fans that they asked when the bakery was coming to Gainesville.” Marge Kelly and Liz Wallen, who own both the Fairfax and Vienna locations, suggested the couple open that Gainesville shop, and with that the idea was born. “The Nothing Bundt Cakes franchise process is significant, including an application and discovery process period,” Brianne said. “As part of that, you do research through the corporate office, reaching out through them to bakeries around the country. We could ask them anything, and we learned so much.” The pair were particularly taken by how corporate places a priority on supporting women moving back into the workforce, helping them overcome the barriers of entry. “There was a great team of people helping us through the process,” said Brianne. “We presented our business plan to the corporate office in Dallas, and we were so happy to be accepted!” Of note – the

company only opens 45 bakeries a year but receives hundreds of applications. There are approximately 450 Nothing Bundt Cakes bakeries in the U.S., with plans to expand to 1,000. There are two bakeries in Canada with plans to grow that market as well. The partners spent a month in Dallas training for every position in the bakery, including baker, dishwasher, and frosting maker. They now employ two full-time bakers and eight part-time frosters. “We have a full commercial kitchen, and though we are the managers, we can jump in and help with anything,” Brianne said. What really resonated with the partners was the company motto. “Bringing the joy -- that is really their motto, and that spoke to us!” said Brianne. “Our kids are involved in groups and activities, and we want to partner with schools, sports teams, churches, and other community events.” When the bakery first opened, both women were working 80 hour weeks. “We opened

three weeks before Mother’s Day,” said Brianne. “It was crazy; we just came home to sleep. At one point when the bakery was up and running, we started coming home at 8pm and we were like ‘Oh, what a win!’” “From day one, the community was ready to welcome us and give us a shot, and that was worth all the long hours,” Jocelyn said. Now, they both work about 35 hours a week, alternating Saturdays. “Our team is awesome. Businesses are struggling right now to find help, but our team has stuck with us,” Brianne shared. “We’ll be spending more time at the bakery as the holidays approach, but it’s been nice to have balance while we can.” Nothing Bundt cakes offers delivery to a twelve mile radius, including Manassas, Haymarket, Warrenton and places in between. “Part of our cake business model hinges on the experience. We do the deliveries ourselves or use one approved vendor,” Jocelyn said. “We are very particular

about how the cake is presented. And honestly, sometimes It is nice to get out, take a drive and be the person to deliver a cake!” “The bakery is supposed to be reminiscent of Grandma’s traditional cake and the family aspect of celebrations – that is the vibe behind it,” Jocelyn shared. “We are loving it – it’s such a positive thing celebrating events, participating in teamwork and the community, connecting, and adding to people’s experiences.” “This bakery is our happy place,” added Brianne. “We try to radiate that through our team, in our lobby, and with our cakes. It’s such a joyful thing, and we intentionally chose it.” And yes, they still eat the cake! UNIQUE, SIDE DISHES FOR YOUR THANKSGIVING TABLE

T

he holidays are here, and it’s time to start cooking! For Thanksgiving, the turkey, of course, is the main attraction: perfectly browned, juicy, and tasting of flavors you may not have experienced since last year. But the turkey can’t carry the day alone — a true Thanksgiving feast involves a multitude of side dishes usually featuring seasonal vegetables that also may not have made an appearance since last year. But why not up the ante a little this year? Instead of plain old squash, present your table with a light, fluffy squash souffle, and instead of a dish of mashed sweet potatoes, serve them in orange cups topped with marshmallows. This will add a gorgeous colorful dish to your table that the kids will totally be attracted to… who doesn’t love marshmallows that have been perfectly browned looking like they just came from over a campfire?

ORANGE MARSHMALLOW SWEET POTATO CUPS 12 SERVINGS INGREDIENTS 6 oranges ¼ cup orange juice 6 sweet potatoes, med. to large 6 tbsp. softened butter cup brown sugar, firmly packed

DIRECTIONS 1. Prepare the orange cups: cut the oranges in half, juice them, and remove remaining pulp with a spoon so the inside is smooth. Reserve ¼ cup of the juice. (enjoy the rest!) 2. Prepare the sweet potatoes: peel, cut into chunks, and boil until fork tender. Drain and mash. 3. Combine the mashed potatoes with the butter. Add the brown sugar, and spices and combine well. Add the orange juice a little at a time until desired consistency is reached. It should be firm and not soupy.

30

{ NOVEMBER 2021 |

1 tsp. cinnamon ½ tsp. ground ginger ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg ½ tsp. salt 12 large marshmallows

4. Scoop the mashed potato mixture into the orange cups, do not overfill. Smooth the top with a spoon so it’s level with the height of the cup. 5. Place a marshmallow in the center of each cup. 6. Bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes or until marshmallows begin to brown. Watch carefully since once they start to brown they’ll burn quickly. If you have leftover mashed potato mixture, you can serve it separately as is, or smooth it into a casserole dish and top with marshmallows and bake as above.

ine trends have always been a part of the greater wine landscape. Over the decades, both wine grapes and styles have emerged from the pack to become what is current and fashionable; from the white zinfandel blush craze of the 1990’s to the more recent bonedry rose’ explosion. We’ve seen oaky-buttery chardonnays and the massively extracted red wines from the west coast both peak and decline, in both preference and priority. There’s always a demand for something new, as winemakers introduce new varieties to older terroirs and innovative cellar techniques change a wine’s direction in both profile and style…at least for a while. That said, a wine grape that’s always flown steady under the radar sometimes (and finally) gets

its well-deserved time in the spotlight…that time is now for cabernet franc. A grape of Basque origin, cabernet franc has steadily risen in both plantings and production over the last 10 years, which is a fast-moving track of time in the wine world. Where it was once ranked the 32nd most widely planted worldwide grape, it’s now in the mid-teens with a bullet. It also has an incredibly rich history, as it’s the oldest grape in the carmenet (old synonym for CF) family lineage of grapes – cabernet franc is the parent grape of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, carménère of France and the great hondarribi beltza of Spain…that’s quite the impressive brood. It historically thrived in Bordeaux (mostly right bank) and the Loire Valley of France, but has emerged as a standalone wine around the world, including Italy, Spain and our coastal states. It’s intensely aromatic, known for red fruit, good acidity and an even tannic framework. I’ve always loved cabernet franc and have chosen a few to share with you here… Michael Shaps Cabernet Franc 2017 Turns out that cabernet franc grows pretty well in our own backyard. And as I’ve written before, winemaker Michael Shaps knows a few things about making great wine. A Gold Medal winner in the 2020 Monticello Cup Wine Competition, Michael Shaps Cabernet Franc 2017 is indeed a wine of Virginia purity. Composed of 100% single variety, with fruit from the Monticello AVA vineyards of Rougemont (67%) and Carter Mountain (33%), it’s barrel-aged in both neutral and new French oak for 22 months,

allowing for great depth and expression. Shaps himself will tell you that cabernet franc has been one of his favorite varieties to grow and produce for years, indeed because of its unique expression and style. Here in the Commonwealth, cabernet franc ripens very well on the deep clay soils that permeate the land. As for the 2017 bottling, it’s a mediumweight wine, full of vibrant red fruits, gentle tannins and substantial length. It’s ready to drink now and will make for a great first bottle on your Thanksgiving table. Land of Saints Cabernet Franc 2019 Three friends. Four cultures. One California sun. This is the symbolic welcome sign to Land of Saints Wine Company, a beautiful collaboration between partners Angela and Jason Osborne (A Tribute to Grace Wine Company), and Manuel Cuevas (C2 Cellars), in Santa Barbara, California. LOS produces an array of great wines, but the one of note here is their Land of Saints Cabernet Franc 2019. Ruby red in color with a palette of red fruit aromas, LOS CF 2019 is fast-pleasing and easy to drink. Black cherries, pomegranate, wild strawberry and red plums complement the bell pepper, baking spice, and graphite undercurrents. Despite the abundance of fruit, it’s a dry wine, with a balanced core of acid, body, alcohol and tannin…right down the center lane. Pair it all day long with sausage and roast peppers. Domaine de Pallus, Chinon, France One would be very hard pressed to find a greater place for cabernet franc than Chinon,

in the inimitable Loire Valley of France. A land globally known for its sauvignon blanc, it makes perfect sense that it’s also the perfect place for cabernet franc…after all, they are the parents of cabernet sauvignon. And as expected, a great land calls for great producers. Cue Domaine de Pallus… While achieving winemaking stardom in Spain, Bertrand Sourdais remained passionate about his native Chinon, and for its emblematic variety, Cabernet Franc…it was inevitable that he would someday apply his gifts at his family’s estate, Domaine de Pallus. Of the half-dozen plus Chinon wines that comprise Sourdais’ line-up of cab franc greatness, there are two you should know: the youthful, but strong Messanges Rouge 2019, and the soaring flagship Les Pensees de Pallus 2016. All farming is biodynamic, all harvesting is by hand and the yields are small…vital components for wine greatness. Messanges Rouge 2019 is an exhilarating wine. Messanges is an old Loire Valley name for cabernet franc and Sourdais uses this line for a red (and rosé) from his younger vines. Vinified for drink-it-now accessibility, Messanges Rouge 2019 is perfect introduction to the Pallus style. Produced of course with 100% cabernet franc, it delivers on all levels of red fruit from healthy earth. The acid is strong, the tannins are even and the finish doesn’t end. The youthful vibrancy sets the stage for Sourdais’ jewel of Pallus, Les Pensées de Pallus… Since the debut 2004 vintage, Les Pensées has grown in stature with each passing

harvest. It is assembled from parcels on several different soil types, with the aim to define Chinon in a glass. It reveals classic Loire Valley cabernet franc aromas of red fruits, baking spice and hints of stem, with remarkable palate flavors. Displaying great depth and structure, it ages for 12 months in used Burgundy barrels before bottling and an additional 3 years before release. Only 2,500 cases were produced. So, this holiday season, grab a bottle of the hottest grape going right now; whether from Virginia, California or the great Loire Valley, put some cabernet franc where it belongs… in your glass. Until next time, Happy Vino’ing!

On Thursday, September 30, the ceremonial ribbon was finally cut on the $85 million, 335,000 square-foot Gainesville High School. The school has been open and serving students since August, but the ribbon cutting was the public unveiling for the brand new, state-of-the-art high school campus, as well as the formal dedication of two facilities. The library and media center were named for Ashley Guindon, a rookie police officer with the Prince William County Police when she was shot and killed responding to a domestic call in 2016, and the student services center is named for Lillian Orlich. Over her 67-year career as an educator and counselor in Prince William County, she taught the likes of former Manassas Mayor Hal Parrish II, who spoke in her honor that night as Orlich watched over Zoom. Sitting on 85 acres with capacity for 2,557 students, the high school is currently serving only 9th through 11th grades, primarily alleviating crowding in Patriot, Unity Reed and Battlefield high schools. The campus features a greenhouse, an outdoor amphitheater and a temperature-regulating roof planted with “hardy species of greenery,” according to the school division.

The husband-and-wife duo of Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Blount will perform at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in November.
