t’s finally fall, and you know what that means. Crisp breezes, pumpkin spice, sweaters and, for certain people (like me and maybe you), it means it’s time to declutter the mess that accumulated over the summer (I know my countertops are under there somewhere), refresh the house with new throw pillows and seasonal flowers, and make an appointment to do something, anything, with my hair. If you feel like I do, you’re going to love this issue. Lifestyle spoke with decluttering experts Jennifer Anvari and Christy Simon of Haven Home Solutions about how to declutter successfully, and interior designers Cheryl Kinsey of Interior Eloquence and Maria Loveless of the L&L Design Team about the best ways to breathe new life into your home without spending a bundle. As for a great new fall hair style, don’t miss our feature on Studio B Salon & BeautyBar. Brooke Bailey and her team are ready to refresh your look with great seasonal cut and color suggestions. Of course fall also means that the kids are back in school and, for five young entrepreneurs, they’re also back to work. Check out “The Kids are Alright” and, if you’re going to Haymarket Day on October 16, please stop in and support these budding businesswomen at their booth. There’s so much in this issue. Things to do (don’t miss the Rappahannock Fall Art Tour!), a new winery to try, and people to meet. Like Meghan Davis of Haymarket. A super talented harpist and vocalist, she’s one of the few people who can do both. And she does so beautifully. Until next month, happy reading and happy fall!

“WORTH THE 15 MINUTES” Local hospital team member finds peace of mind with early cancer screenings
April Hanlin with mammography technologist Misty Carroll. Photo by Marissa Pilcher/ UVA Health
B
eing only 36 years old with no family history of breast cancer, mammograms weren’t top of mind for April Hanlin of Manassas. But living with multiple sclerosis – an autoimmune disease that attacks the protective coverings of the nerves – and starting a new treatment that increased her risk for breast cancer, she decided to take control of her own health and talk to her provider about early screening. Her team may not have found cancer but undergoing 2D and 3D mammograms put Hanlin in the driver’s seat for her future health.
MAMMOGRAMS DETECT MORE THAN CANCER
A mammogram is a non-invasive, lowdose X-ray that detects malignancies in breast tissue. It can identify early signs of breast cancer and other breast abnormalities, months or even years before a self-exam. There are two types of mammograms. 2D mammograms produce two images: one from the side and one from above. In 3D mammograms, the X-ray machine moves in an arc over the breast. This movement captures multiple images from different angles to give radiologists a clearer view of the breast tissue. The American Cancer Society recommends women who are at average risk for breast cancer start screening through annual mammograms around age 40. Risk factors such as family history or, like in
6

Hanlin’s case, certain medications could be reasons to consider early screening. If there is a strong family history of breast cancer, screenings should start 10 years before the age that the family member was diagnosed. For example, if a mother was diagnosed at 35, the daughter should start screening at 25.
CARE CLOSE TO HOME
As a member of the local health system’s communications team since December 2019 and a patient in the outpatient infusion center even longer, Hanlin knew how to navigate the halls at Prince William Medical Center. But that didn’t make her any more confident about going in for her baseline mammogram. “I was really nervous,” said Hanlin. However, she quickly became more relaxed when she met her mammography technologist, Misty Carroll. “She was super friendly,” Hanlin added. “We talked about our families and decorating for the holidays. She knew how to get my mind off everything that was happening.” Carroll became the lead mammography technologist at Prince William Medical Center in November 2020. She thrives on interacting with patients and being able to care for them at their most vulnerable state. “When April came in for her baseline, she didn’t really know what to expect,” Carroll recalled. “But she’s so strong and stayed
HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

positive the entire time.” Carroll aims to treat every patient like her own family. She walks each patient through what to expect ahead of their mammogram and explains what she is doing every step of the way. After receiving the results of her baseline mammogram, Hanlin was called back for further imaging of two abnormal findings. One ended up being normal, and one warranted a breast ultrasound for additional imaging. Before the end of the appointment, the radiologist had the results of the 3D mammogram and ultrasound and provided Hanlin with a presumed diagnosis for the roughly dime-sized mass and options for the next steps. With the support of her breast imaging team, she chose to undergo a biopsy. Within one month of her baseline mammogram, Hanlin had pathology results – and answers. As the radiologist suspected, she had a fibroadenoma, a very common non-cancerous tumor found in women in their 20s and 30s. “The additional testing gave me the peace of mind I needed,” Hanlin said. “We have to be our own advocates when it comes to our health.” Hanlin knew seeking care close to home would mean not having to travel far for procedures, but she was pleased to experience first-hand the exceptional women’s care she helps promote at Prince William Medical Center.
MAMMOGRAMS SAVE LIVES
Like all cancer screenings, mammograms make a difference in diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of breast cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, mammograms have helped improve the breast cancer survival rate to nearly 90 percent of patients. “Early detection is key, and imaging like mammograms make this possible,” said Carroll. A baseline or annual mammogram takes on average just 10 to 15 minutes to complete and diagnostic imaging, including 3D imaging, averages 30 minutes. “It’s worth the 15 minutes,” Carroll said. “We’ve probably waited longer in the Starbucks drive-thru.” Today, Hanlin says she’s feeling great after her mostly uneventful first breast cancer screening. Her six-month followup scan came back normal with no further tests required, and she’s excited about only needing to get screened once a year for the foreseeable future. “Visiting Misty is now something to look forward to every July,” she said. NEW & NOTEWORTHY
Studio B Salon & BeautyBar: Poised to be the hotspot for hair – and more – in Haymarket PHOTOS BY BROOKE BAILEY
T
he hair business is super competitive and opening a new salon during a pandemic would be particularly daunting for most people. But Brooke Bailey is not most people. With her love for making clients look and feel beautiful, a crystal clear vision of the environment she wanted to create, and a well-crafted plan to be involved in the community, her Studio B Salon & BeautyBar is poised to be the hotspot for hair – and more – in Haymarket. Tell us about the B in Studio B. Where does it come from? I am recently married. In fact, our oneyear anniversary is October 10th! So I go by Brooke Bailey. The name Studio B is part of my namesake. I’m an Aunt B., Grammy B. and now a Bailey, so that’s where the B comes from. How did Studio B Salon & BeautyBar come about and why did you select Haymarket for its location? The salon came about after really assessing my vision. I wanted a chic, upscale, yet cozy area with great light and, after renovations, that’s exactly what I got. The vibe is chic and sassy with a down to earth, fun, easy breezy feel. It is very relaxing, with the cool colors and warm textured furniture. We find some clients don’t want to leave. We have an outside patio with bistro tables for clients to sit and sip their sparkling water, Nespresso’s, seasonal cocktails and of course wine! I wanted this to be the “it” place to go in the

area. We are a studio which means a more intimate setting and that allows us to pay attention to the small details that make our clients' visit more memorable. And I love the location. Haymarket is beautiful and we’re right on the corner of Washington Street just a half a mile away from Route 66. It’s perfect. What makes Studio B different from other salons in the area? A few things, actually. All six of our stylists are Master Stylists, balayage specialists, color correctors and makeover artists. I chose this because I want anyone to know that they can walk in at any time and know that their haircut and color will be precise. We have extensive consultations. We photograph and keep progress pictures as well as a paper trail of formulas so we can always revert back to anything. It is not just a hair service for clients. It’s an experience where people leave feeling absolutely amazing. We offer all hair services. We are a certified Brazilian blowout salon, offer Along Aqua tape extensions, hair makeovers and reconstructive hair treatments. From beautiful balayages to picture perfect updos for any occasion. And of course makeup and makeovers is one of our specialties. In addition, while clients are processing they can enjoy a hand massage with a warm lotion and a hot/cool towel neck massage can be added to any service.

Tell us about the headshot package Studio B offers and the events for teens you have planned. We have a package that specializes in headshots. You can come in and get your hair and makeup done and get a professional picture taken at the same time. Convenient, right? As for teens, throughout the year we will be holding multiple events to show them how to properly apply make up and take care of their hair. We’ll also show them the proper amount of product to use so they can understand about product waste. In addition, we’re a drop off location for prom and homecoming dresses. We want to help teens when they are having financial hardships with donations from the community as well as time volunteered by the stylists. Our goal is to help them build self-esteem and confidence. The events for teens sound terrific. Anything planned for us adults? Absolutely! We will have pop-up happy hours and offer educational classes on hair and makeup. And we’re collaborating with other businesses within the Old Town area to develop more fun events. Stay tuned! How did you find the courage and confidence to open a new business now, in the midst of the ongoing pandemic? Being in this pandemic doesn’t mean you have to stop living. My husband, Jason, is my biggest fan and when I told him I really wanted to do this he said I should have done it a long time ago! I really feel there’s no better time than now and, as it turns out, there was no better time for my team. We’ve been tight for many years and are really a family. Is there anything else you’d like to add? I want Studio B Salon and BeautyBar to be a part of the growth in Haymarket and I would like to make a difference. Look for us at the Haymarket Day parade. We’ll be there with cider, s’mores, and more! Studio B Salon & BeautyBar 1151 Washington Street, Ste. 129, Haymarket 571-284-7951 | @studiobsalonandbeautybar

s you’re probably well aware, October 16 is Haymarket Day. What you’re probably less likely to be aware of, is that our area’s most popular community event is also a very big day for five young entrepreneurs. Ferris Brown, Kelsie Hargis, Dezi Rebelo, Madison Reunart, and Reagan Swenson, the majority of whom call Haymarket home (Madison resides in Warrenton), will be there touting their terrific wares and donating a percentage of the day’s sales from each of their respective businesses to local charities. Thanks to the support of local realtor Bill Denny of The Bill Denny Group, Long and Foster Realtors, these five savvy young business women will be in one booth and they really hope you’ll stop by. To give you an idea of who they are and what kind of business they’ve started, read on for all the details and make it a point to visit them on Haymarket Day!
Dezi Rebelo
Dezi Rebelo of Haymarket launched Wag & Woof out of a love for dogs and a desire to make sure the foods they eat are made naturally.
H AY M A R K E T. O W N E R , W A G & W O O F
It all started one day in 2018 when Dezi Rebelo, now 14 years old and a freshman at Gainesville High School, was feeding her dog a treat. “Why are the ingredients on this label impossible to pronounce?” she asked her mother. “Because they’re not natural,” her mother, Barbi, replied. With her dad’s encouragement, Dezi launched Wag & Woof, an all natural line of dog treats that has recently expanded to include pill pockets. “My dad owns a concrete company and he said ‘Why not be your own boss? You can make your own hours and make all the decisions?’ And I thought that sounded great,” said Dezi. Almost as great as her passion for dogs. “I love dogs,” Dezi said, “any and all dogs. It makes me happy to be around them and happier still to know my treats are high in protein and good for them. Now four years old, 10-15% of Wag & Woof profits are donated monthly to a variety of nonprofits of Dezi’s choosing. “I
believe in giving back,” she said. “I have donated to Gray Face Acres, A Hand Up, and a variety of animal shelters. I just think it’s the right thing to do.” You can find Wag & Woof on Facebook at Wag & Woof

What woman doesn’t love lip gloss, particularly all natural lip gloss? Ferris Brown and Reagan Swenson, both 12 years-old and in the seventh grade at Bull Run Middle School, love lip gloss. They also love doing crafts and experiments, and it was that passion that led them to start Gloss Goddess Lips. Gloss Goddess Lips offers all-natural, moisturizing lip gloss in a variety of scents and flavors and while both Ferris and Reagan love getting out and selling their line at different places now that the business is more established, they’ll tell you that the start-up phase was tough. “The hardest part of starting
our business was finding and deciding on the all-natural ingredients to include,” said Reagan. “We wanted to be sure our customers didn’t have any reaction to them,” added Ferris. So what’s the best part of being in business together? “The best part of the business is spending lots of time together doing the things we love the most,” said Ferris. “And,” added Reagan, “since we both want to be teachers when we’re older and teachers do have to be crafty, creating a lip gloss line has certainly made us better in that respect.” You can find Gloss Goddess Lips on Facebook at Gloss Goddess Lips.

“I was inspired to start my business by my mom, who also has a small business,” said 13 year-old Kelsie Hargis of Haymarket. “I’ve always loved doing things like lemonade stands and making things to sell, so owning a hair accessory business was a natural outgrowth of that.” The Bull Run Middle School eighth grader has experienced her share of ups and downs since starting Fashion Scrunchies Hair Accessories. “I would say the hardest thing so far about having a business is marketing and finding what people are interested in,” said Kelsie.
Any small - or big - business person would agree with that completely. They’d also understand the reasons she remains undeterred. “What I really love about having a business is meeting customers and keeping track of orders from new states,” said Kelsie, adding “I’m not sure what I want to be when I grow up yet, but having a small business would be fun!”

Madison Renuart WARRENTON. OWNER, SCENTS OF LOVE CANDLE CO.
When Madison Renuart was 12 years-old, she started making homemade candles and launched Scents of Love Candle Co. shortly thereafter. If you’re wondering why candles, well they have a special meaning to the now 14 year-old eighth grader at Highland School. “I have ADHD and anxiety,” said Madison, “and candles have always helped calm me on days when I struggle. I wanted to make my own candles so I could share the same peace and calm they give me with others.” All Scents of Love Candle Co. candles are 100% natural soy wax with no dyes or additives and, because candles help her, Madison pays it forward and helps others. She donates 10% of every candle sale to non-profit organizations that are close to her heart and refers to this aspect of her business as Candles for a Cause. To date, she has donated $1,449 to a variety of charities. As with having any small business, getting the hang of balancing work and life can be tough. “The most challenging part is learning how to juggle school and activities while running my business,” she says. It’s worth it though, when she sees the difference that her donations have made. “To date, $1,049 of the profits have gone to animal rescue, and currently I’m supporting Gray Face Acres Senior Dog Rescue with my sales.” Clearly Madison’s Candles for a Cause is a hit with customers and even a retailer now, too. Recently, Remix Market in Warrenton began carrying her Scents of Love Candle Co. line. “That was super exciting,” she says. “When Remix Market chose to carry my candles I could hardly believe it! OUR NEIGHBORS BY ERIN KELLEHER
Striking the Perfect Chord: Meet Harpist and Vocalist Meghan Davis of Haymarket BY FRANNIE BARNES
BY PAUL LARA
T
he harp is a fascinating instrument. Weighing in at 85 pounds, standing six feet tall, and four feet deep, it’s hardly a common looking instrument. The ethereal sound that comes from playing its 47 strings is traditionally associated with classical music … not “Happy” by Pharrell Williams or the Game of Thrones theme. But in the hands of award-winning harpist, vocalist, and Haymarket resident Meghan Davis anything is possible. Meghan has been playing the harp since she was about half the size of the instrument. On a trip to Ireland at the tender age of four, she encountered a harpist who
14

made a lasting impression on her. Her mom has always said she was born with music in her, which is apparent when you meet her. To satisfy her desire to play an instrument, she began her musical journey with piano lessons, but she just wouldn’t let go of the harp. When she was nine, she got her wish and began taking harp lessons. Her musical journey illustrates the hard work she put in, and the dedication and talent she possessed at a young age and throughout her life. While attending a music camp in Wilkes-Barre, PA, she met and began studying with a student from Julliard, Gulnara Mashurova, who became her mentor. (Ms. Mashurova is now the principal

harpist of the Singapore Symphony.) By the time she was ten, she was traveling two and a half hours each way from PA to New York City to study with Gulnara every other week until she was 18. During this time, she was still playing piano, singing, and performing in musicals in her high school preparatory school. Meghan was a good student, but when she attended music school, she said she understood what it felt like to be an A student. “The school was speaking a language I understood. It was amazing to see the difference when you’re in an environment where you can excel,” she said. As a young child she could identify a

Fun facts about Meghan: She had a fangirl moment when she performed at a wedding where Taylor Swift was in attendance and thought she’d faint when Swift approached her and complimented her talent. She arranges popular music from artists such as Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, Christina Perri, Sting and the Beatles (among others) and from shows such as Game of Thrones for the harp. She often performs with her husband, a cellist, and is currently teaching their four-year-old daughter the harp, violin, and piano.

key change in music by ear. She can hear a melody and write it down. Her talent of translating what she hears and writing it down as music notes on the page, a process known as musical dictation, is a critical component of arrangement. She entered The Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University as a vocal major, but much like when she was younger, she couldn’t be away from the harp, so naturally, she became a double major in harp and vocal performance. “Studying a double major provided me with a world-class education that set up my career. I never thought I’d be a singing harpist. Mentally, both playing and singing take up so much of your bandwidth,” Meghan said. But you wouldn’t know that when you watch her perform. She went on to earn her Master of Music Performance from the Boyer School at Temple University and to date she is one of few artists who can sing while playing the harp. In 2018, Meghan and her family moved to Haymarket, where she has continued her prolific career as performer and arranger. She has two young children and enjoys teaching them music. Meghan’s biography is without a doubt, impressive. But if you go to her YouTube channel, prepare to be amazed. The training she has received, and the drive and passion she has for music has resulted in a unique
career where she not only performs but also arranges music in new ways. Meghan performs at weddings, receptions, corporate events and concerts, but when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, like for so many others, her livelihood was put on pause. “I realized nothing is promised and it really helped me think about what I want to leave for my community and my children, as an artist,” she said. She and her husband Alex Keller, a professional cellist, began producing videos for her YouTube channel. Her husband, who is also an electrical engineer, learned editing, sound mixing, and cinematography. They have been enjoying recording Meghan’s solo performances, as well as harp and cello duos. She is currently recording her second album. Ever since our interview, this writer has spent a significant amount of time watching and listening to Meghan’s unique talent and I hope you do the same. You can find her music on meghankdavis.com and YouTube.

HIS EXPERTISE:
Interior Design
BY YARON LINETT
Tired of long lead times and shipping delays? Do you want to get your house on the market as soon as possible? Do you have guests coming for the holidays and need to redecorate before they arrive? This month’s column answers some of your questions about how to avoid long delays associated with the global shipping crunch.
HOW CAN WE BRING COHESION TO A SPACE WITHOUT ORDERING LOTS OF STUFF? If you are a fan of a certain 1998 Coen Brothers movie you already know the answer is that the right rug can really bring the room together. Luckily there are many places that stock a significant selection of sound absorbing, room warming, take it home with you today pieces of artwork you cover your floor with. Even better, once you show the space you can roll it up and take it with you.
Yaron Linett is the principal designer of Formal Traditional, a full-service design firm located in Northern Virginia. To submit your interior design questions, drop him a note at yaron@ formaltraditional. com or visit www. formaltraditional.com.
A 100% wool felt pad will make even inexpensive rugs feel nicer and they should be safe for virtually any floor. PRO TIP
OUR HOUSE FEELS DATED BUT WE WANT IT ON THE MARKET IMMEDIATELY. HOW SHOULD WE PROCEED?
WE’RE GOING TO HAVE OUR HOUSE REPAINTED. IS THERE ANYTHING WE SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR?
The first step would be to speak to your realtor and arrange for a staging consultation. They should have someone they work with who can prepare a detailed report about the items that need to be addressed. While every situation is different, signs of deferred maintenance or damage need to be addressed as well as cleaning, decluttering, and depersonalizing to start.
There is almost always going to be repainting or at least touch ups to do, so I’m not surprised, but even if you have a crew lined up you might need to be flexible about the particular paint. Our last two jobs had painting issues. During the first, the store ran out of paint, and during the second, we had to switch brands because the first company still had not been able to restock.
Your realtor and their team should have a list of trustworthy companies they partner with to complete whatever items on the report are ones you can’t or shouldn’t attempt yourself. PRO TIP

HOW IMPORTANT ARE WINDOW TREATMENTS? CAN WE SKIP THEM?
Paint itself is relatively inexpensive. The labor to repaint significantly exceeds the cost of making sure you are happy with the color by having a sample made in the same sheen, even if that requires purchasing an entire gallon that might not get used. PRO TIP
HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE
}
While natural light is normally a big plus there are times when having a window treatment is a must. One of our recent clients moved into a house with a gorgeous large window right in front of their tub. Unfortunately that also happened to be right in front of their neighbors living room. Light control is important when you need to sleep as well as creating a feeling of privacy. Window treatments should be present where needed but opened to allow light in for showing provided there is no parking garage or other unsightly item directly in view. Custom window PRO treatments take TIP time, but a good workroom can have them manufactured within 3 to 4 weeks. Don’t forget to factor in some time for installation.
WE WANT TO SELL OUR HOUSE FURNISHED, BUT WANT TO REPLACE THE FURNITURE FIRST. THOUGHTS? The specifics of showing and selling a house furnished are much more complicated, especially when you want to change what’s in there. Aside from speaking once again with your realtor and their team, if you want to get on the market as quickly as possible you should absolutely consider reupholstering the existing pieces before purchasing new ones. Lead times for furniture can exceed 9 months where the typical upholstery job takes about 4 weeks. Many upholstery workrooms will pick up and deliver your piece(s) in their own vehicles which is much faster than waiting for shipping companies. PRO TIP

The 16th Annual Fall Art Tour in Rappahannock Comes Roaring Back NOVEMBER 6-7
T
here have been few certainties in our lives over the past year and a half, but this year's Fall Art Tour is certain to please everyone. The Tour will be available for your enjoyment both in person and online to allow visitors from near and far to meet and interact with Rappahannock's many fine artists and see their wide range of artwork. If you prefer to enjoy the Tour from the comfort of your home, you will be treated to the displays of works from 40 studio artists and galleries and special features that acquaint you with the artists.
WHAT YOU WON'T WANT TO MISS ON THIS YEAR'S TOUR:
Rappahannock artists have been busy creating over the year in a wide range of media. More than 80 local artists are displaying in 30 studios and 10 galleries. Many renown artists are returning to the Tour and there are 6 exciting new artist studios. The wide range of artwork includes paintings in all media, furniture, drawings and engravings, sculpture, ceramics, photography, wood works, jewelry, book binding, glass works, and pottery. You can also see their work displayed online and can contact the artists for future appointments.
AN ACCOMMODATING TWIST ON THE TRADITIONAL: The Fall Tour has become a beloved Rappahannock tradition with many visitors returning each year and new guests quickly becoming devoted fans. Last year, because of the pandemic, Rappahannock Association for Arts and Community (RAAC) created popular monthly virtual exhibitions. This year, the pandemic is still with us but vaccinations and other protective measures make it possible for the majority of Tour artists and galleries to be open to visitors for the traditional in-person Tour experience. Those studio artists who are uncertain will rely on their online presence to arrange visits with interested visitors. The two options will ensure a safe and special experience for all. ENJOY THE FALL ART TOUR—YOUR WAY: The in-person and online Tour offerings will allow visitors to choose the way(s) in which they want to enjoy the Fall Tour. The in-person Tour will differ from prior years in that there won't be a Headquarters Gallery as the starting point and there will be no admission. Instead, the website at www.FallArtTour.org will be the online headquarters gallery where you can get information, directions, and a downloadable map to open studios and galleries. There you will find everything you need for your special self-guided Tour through Rappahannock's beautiful landscapes to the unique studios of their remarkable artists. { OCTOBER 2021 |

racy Statler, longtime resident of Gainesville, opened her second Amazing Lash Studio location at the Promenade at Virginia Gateway in late June with the mission of providing best-in-class eyelash, eyebrow and facial waxing services to clients, as well as creating an inspiring and nurturing workplace for women in the beauty, esthetics and cosmetology fields where they can improve their skills and learn to build up other women on the team for mutual success. Statler, a graduate of Ball State University, began her career working in sales operations

for tech startups in Silicon Valley, where she met her husband Patrick. When Patrick was transferred to Northern Virginia, Tracy left the tech world behind and set out to begin a career in real estate — a career that she flourished in for more than 15 years. After having children, Statler wanted to make sure she had time to spend with them on the weekends. “My husband and I decided we wanted to own something. From a young age, I knew I wanted to be involved in the spa, beauty, and wellness industry and that I wanted to be an entrepreneur,” Statler said. “We began looking at franchises with

a recurring revenue model and we looked at a lot of fitness and beauty brands. We chose Amazing Lash because we were very impressed with the business model.” Statler especially loved using her real estate skills in scouting locations and working with architects to create the studio spaces. She also loved that the company is focused on empowering women and helping them to grow in their careers. “I am motivated every day to create an inspiring and nurturing workplace for women in the beauty, esthetics and cosmetology fields, and passionate about helping them grow

their skills and learn to work with other women on their team for mutual success. When employees feel supported, enjoy coming to work and are encouraged to keep learning and growing, it’s a win-win scenario for everyone,” Statler said. She aims to be a local employer of choice for those interested in long term, stable careers in the beauty industry. Amazing Lash Studio’s mission is to create lasting beauty and confidence through passion, dedication and excellence so their guests will look and feel amazing. They currently have over 260 locations across the country. Tracy and her husband and business partner Patrick opened their first location just two years ago on Liberia Avenue in Manassas. “We were forced to close for two months when the pandemic hit, but thankfully we were able to keep our employees on payroll and everyone who was with us came back when we were permitted to reopen.” At that point everyone was still masked up but with both the client and the stylist wearing masks, it worked. “Your eyes and eyebrows stand out while you’re wearing a mask, so people were able to come in for our services.,” Statler said. “As a national brand, Amazing Lash was one of the few businesses that was able to show some growth through the pandemic.”

Amazing Lash Studio provides individual classic and volume eyelash extensions, lash lifts and tinting, eyebrow lamination, eyebrow tinting and shaping as well as full facial waxing services. “Clients come to us to prepare for some of life’s big moments like weddings, family photos, job interviews, big dates, vacations, reunions and celebrations of all kinds and then often come back monthly because they look and feel amazing with their lash extensions, lash lifts or fabulous new brows,” Statler said. In addition to continuing to build up her client base at the new Gainesville location, Tracy’s goal is to form a collaborative networking group with the many other health, wellness and beauty businesses in the Gainesville, Haymarket and Warrenton area that have been able to survive, thrive and stay open despite the pandemic. She often reaches out and networks with others in complementary beauty and wellness businesses to talk about best practices, marketing and thriving in the current business environment. She has seen first hand and firmly believes that “A rising tide lifts all boats.” For more information on Statler’s Amazing Lash Studio at 13954 Promenade Commons St Suite B-2A, Gainesville, visit amazinglashstudio.com/studios/va/ gainesville/gainesville or call 571-946-8035.

Refresh Small Changes Make a Big Difference Many of us see the freshness of fall as the perfect time to revitalize our space. That’s why Lifestyle asked Cheryl Kinsey of Interior Eloquence and Maria Loveless of the L&L Design Team for some quick and inexpensive ways to give our interiors a boost. Read on for their terrific tips, insight on what’s trending, and realistic perspectives on a few projects you probably shouldn’t tackle without a pro.
Lifestyle (L): What are your top three suggestions for clients looking to refresh their home? Cheryl Kinsey (CK): My top
three suggestions are to change out accessories, pillows, and area rugs. Things like pillows may need a refresh and having a different set of accent pillows for fall/winter and spring/ summer helps to keep a room feeling renewed and in season. In addition, changing out an area rug can really perk up a space.
Maria Loveless (ML): I usually
suggest creating a statement wall, replacing hardware, and changing the window treatments. A statement wall is an easy way to make a big change with a few coats of paint or wallpaper. Replacing the hardware on kitchen cabinets, TV consoles, dressers or sideboards takes no time and really rejuvenates a room, and changing the window treatments is probably one of the easiest ways to freshen things up.
L: What design trends are you seeing become popular, and which are on the wane? CK: One popular trend is
creating warm and cozy spaces that make you want to spend time in them. The warmth can come from the colors as well as the feel of the textiles. Durable fabrics are really in now. Warm colors, like greens, browns, and deep oranges, as well as warm pastel colors, are very popular. And let’s not forget houseplants.

People are filling their homes with houseplants of all sizes. With regard to waning trends, we’re seeing less subway tile and the color gray. ML: Green cabinets look like they might be one of the biggest kitchen trends this year. They’re a fun way to add drama plus green goes well with cool and warm color palettes. In terms of trends that are on the decline, matching furniture sets are on their way out, finally! They do nothing to showcase your personal style.
L: Is there a particular design trend you like or dislike? Why? CK: I’m not pro or con with
any particular design trends. Two new trends that I’m seeing and like are Cottage Core, which is replacing French Cottage with a more casual and relaxed feel, and Grand Millennial which puts a modern twist on Traditional. Good design is personal – it fits you and your space – and is timeless too.
Maria Loveless is an interior designer in Manassas. Her studio offers full service interior design for both residential and commercial projects. For more information, visit MariaLoveless. DecoratingDen.com or call 703-330-4451.
ML: I’m a big fan of bold monochromatics. Pale, soft monochromatics were in for a long time. Now, I’m loving the new approach of bold colors applied the same way. Colors like Current Mood, Borscht, or Naval. They make very classy statements. In terms of disliking a trend, I’ve never been a fan of industrial style. I always felt that it was a bit harsh and cold. L: What’s the quickest way to breathe new life into a space without breaking the bank? CK: I would say fresh paint,
new or additional light fixtures, and new area rugs.
ML: Reduce visual clutter. Remove some of the busy wall art, declutter the wire storage baskets, and clear space on your bookshelves to help them look clean and stylish.
L: Among those clients who like to do things themselves, what’s one or two projects you wish they’d leave to the pros? CK: Major renovations
like gutting the kitchen or bathroom. I’ve heard stories of people starting a master bath renovation and for one reason or another ran into a problem and haven’t returned to the job for over 6-8 months.
ML: One is space planning. So many clients buy furniture that’s too big for the space. And the other is kitchens. There are so many selections to be made and so many mistakes that can happen if you don’t know what you are doing.
For those who enjoy a touch of drama, Current Mood by CLARE (top right), Naval (top left), and Borscht (above), both by Sherwin Williams, offer a sophisticated intensity and allure.

FALL HOME
Refresh Conquer Clutter One Step at a Time BY SUSAN MCCORKINDALE
C
lutter makes me crazy. Even if I don’t have to look at it all day, just knowing that the basement shelves are a disaster drives me to distraction. Of course I want to get them organized, but even if I get motivated to do it, it’s very possible I’ll become overwhelmed and quit in the middle. Since I’m pretty sure lots of you feel similarly, we spoke with Jennifer Anvari and Christy Simon of Haven Home Solutions in Haymarket about how to set yourself up for decluttering success no matter what space you need to tackle.
When a client asks how to get started organizing their home, what are your top suggestions?
For some clients, it’s best to start with what’s easy. Areas like a linen closet or a bathroom cabinet tend to be contained, free of emotional attachment, and can be completed within an hour or two. For other clients, paying attention to how their home is making them feel is important. In that case, we help them identify which area of their home is bringing them the most stress and frustration. By starting with the area that is most discouraging, they can feel a sense of accomplishment. That helps them get excited about tackling additional spaces.
Is there a particular process to use when cleaning out and decluttering?
Whether you are organizing one category in your home (all the books, for instance) or a space (closet, desk, living room, kitchen), the steps remain the same. 1. Pull everything out, and relocate it into a different space. 2. Sort the items into categories (paper, toys, books, clothes, etc.). Now you can see how much you have in each category. 3. Go through the category, verifying what you want to keep, and what you want to send to donation, trash,

or recycling. Organize what’s left. Decide what needs to return to the space you’re working on, and what should go somewhere else in your home. Think through how you use the items, and purchase storage bins as needed for what you know you want to keep. Finish the job. Always make sure any space you organize is clean and tidy so you know it’s done.
What’s the best way to declutter a large, overwhelming space?
Our first step is to set up a separate area away from the room we’re organizing, where our client can spread out and make decisions. We call this a staging area. It’s much easier to sort and make decisions away from the overwhelming space. Next, we set our client up in the staging area with one organizer who helps them talk through their possessions, troubleshoot decisions, and keeps the workflow moving. The second organizer works in the room that’s causing the client stress, pulling items out a few at a time for the client to consider, and replacing items the client decides to keep. At the end of our session, we leave the client with a freshly tidied and organized space that’s stress free.

Among those clients who like to do things themselves, what are some projects you wish they’d leave to the pros?
We often work with clients who have spent hours trying to organize their homes without making progress. Using a professional organizer right from the start can help by breaking down a large project into smaller pieces, prioritizing the sub-projects, and helping you learn the skills you need to tackle each subsequent project efficiently on your own. As strange as it may seem, it can be really useful to work with a professional on very personal projects, like memorabilia, or an inheritance or estate. When you’re working on projects that have a lot of emotion attached, an empathetic and compassionate organizing team can help you process meaningful items, and gain enough distance and perspective to make difficult decisions more efficiently.
What are some of the positives that come from living with less stuff?
Less to clean, less to tidy, less to think about, and maintain. The things we own carry emotional and psychological weight—they take up more than just physical space in our lives. For additional information, visit HavenHomeSolutions.com, email Haven@HavenHomeSolutions.com, or call 571-306-1570.

DIRECTIONS: Puréed Pumpkin 1. Preheat oven to 350°F 2. Slice your pumpkin in half and remove the stem, seeds, and stringy portions, scraping the inside until clean, leaving the skin on. 3. Place the pumpkin halves cut side down on a baking sheet. 4. Roast until the inside of the pumpkin flesh is soft and the skin can be pierced with a fork, about 40-45 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool. 5. Scoop out the softened flesh and purée in a food processor until smooth.

Treat Your Family to Classic Pumpkin Pie from Real Pumpkins RECIPE AND PHOTO BY NATALIE ORTIZ
W
ith pumpkin season upon us, it’s time to start thinking about the holidays. Pumpkin pie is easy, right? Using those cans of pumpkin pie filling from the grocery store, you can whip it up in a snap, especially if you’re using store-bought pie crust. But why not treat your family to something more authentic this holiday season? It’s really not hard to make pumpkin pie from actual pumpkins — it’s a simple matter of roasting them in the oven until the flesh is soft, and then puréeing it in a food processor. Using fresh pumpkin puree gives the pie a creamier mouth feel and a thicker, better texture. It’s well worth the effort! Sugar pumpkins are the best pumpkins to use for roasting and pies. They are usually smaller than your regular jack-o-lantern variety, less stringy, and have a firm, sweet-savory flesh that makes a smooth purée once roasted. This makes them ideal for soups or — in this instance — pies. A good rule of thumb is that one 3 to 4 pound roasted sugar pumpkin yields approximately 3 to 4 cups of pumpkin purée.

INGREDIENTS For the crust: 12 tbsp. unsalted butter 3 cups all-purpose flour 1½ tbsp. sugar 1 tsp. kosher salt cup very cold vegetable shortening, such as Crisco ¼ cup ice water ¼ cup vodka, chilled For the pumpkin custard filling: 1 sugar pumpkin, about 3-4 pounds ½ cup granulated sugar ½ cup brown sugar 1 tbsp. all-purpose flour ½ tsp. sea salt 1½ tsp. ground ginger 1½ tsp. ground cinnamon ¾ tsp. nutmeg ¼ tsp. ground cloves 3 large eggs, beaten 1¼ cups evaporated milk

Pie Crust 1. Cut the butter & shortening into cubes (sized about ½ tbsp.) and place in the freezer for 10 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, place the flour, sugar, and salt into a food processor using the blade insert and pulse a few times to mix. 3. Add the butter and shortening to the processor, and pulse until the butter is the size of small pebbles. Continue pulsing while simultaneously pouring the ice water and vodka down the feed tube until the dough begins to form a ball. 4. On a floured board, divide into two equal portions and roll into balls. Wrap each ball in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Note: You will only be using one ball of dough for this pie, so you can reserve the other for another use. Pie Filling 1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sugars, flour, salt, and spices. 2. In a separate bowl, beat together the eggs, 2 cups of the pumpkin purée, and evaporated milk. Whisk into the dry ingredients. For best flavor, cover and refrigerate the filling overnight before baking. Assembling the pie 1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. 2. Roll one dough ball out on a well-floured board into a circle. Be sure to roll the dough about 1” larger than the pie pan. 3. Fold the dough into quarters and gently transfer it into the pie pan, being careful not to stretch it. Unfold the crust to fit the pan. Cut the dough 1” larger around than the pan. Fold the edge under and crimp the edge with either your fingers or the tines of a fork. 4. When the oven is hot, place the pie pan on a baking sheet. Pour the filling into the unbaked pie shell and bake for 45 to 50 minutes. The filling should be set 2” in from the edge, but the center will be wobbly. Remove the pie from the oven and cool on a rack; the center will finish cooking through as the pie rests. Overcooking will result in cracked custard filling.

I
n my wine life, one of the joys that I’ve come to genuinely appreciate over the years actually has little to do with (the) wine itself; and yet it can be almost everything…and that is a beautiful winery and its accompanying scenery. Certainly, the wine is critical; but a tremendous view can make what’s in the glass taste even more memorable. In this regard, Virginia is very blessed. And in my travels to many of the wineries in the state, I’ve encountered everything from beautiful boutique grounds to grand and rolling landscapes filled with perfect rows of viticultural magic. Oftentimes, the structures themselves, with underground wine cellars and soaring tasting rooms, add the final touches to a great wine experience. And sometimes, you don’t have to travel that far to find such a place.

a Club Member room on the second story with beautiful original art for sale and its own private deck. Leaning a bit on the more industrial side, it’s a very cool space to enjoy company, food, beer and of course, wine. Business partners Maria Rafferty and Tom Schrade opened the winery in March 2020, just as all the world was about to change. Representing three generations of two families, they stayed true to their commitment of family (and friends) coming together to serve a common pursuit – to provide both locals and visitors from afar a place to gather, imbibe and absorb breathless natural scenery. Upon a recent visit, I enjoyed not only such scenery, but a terrific flight of wines including a crisp Pinot Gris, a Kabinettstyled Riesling and a beautiful ruby-colored Chambourcin rose`. The quartet was capped off with a wonderful Cabernet Franc, filled with floral notes, red currant, and a touch of spice. Winemaker J. Ashton Lough, whose work can be found at The Winery at Bull Run, is offering his talents to W@SRF, as they are in the nascent stages of their own wine production. One-quarter acre of vidal blanc is planted, with a hopeful first bottling in 2022/23. Also on the wine horizon is viognier and petit verdot, two wine grapes that have truly flourished throughout Virginia. There’s also an adjacent 10 acres just waiting for the future and rows of vines…all in time.

Speaking of time and finding more ways to spend it at W@SRF, off the grand floor sits an adjacent room called The Dog House Brewery…another sight to behold. Refurbished and repurposed pieces, such as old pews that survived a Culpeper church fire and ornate metal roofing materials that adorn the main wall, contribute to the old pub vibe. A great beer menu is offered as well, courtesy of Maria and Tom’s friends at Cedar Run Brewery and Beltway Brewing Company, including the Love Pipe Light, an American Light Ale inspired by the ‘Virginia is for Lovers’ metal sculpture, called the Love Pipe, which stands tall on the property. Be sure to ask about the great love story attached to it! Every Friday-Sunday, local food trucks and live entertainment on a beautiful custom-built stage add even more fun to the collective experience. As Tom will tell you, “This place was built from the land. Friends and family, local workers using local materials. All of it.” Maria adds, “Our hope is that everyone feels like they’re home when they visit. It’s just so beautiful here.” So, if a solo walk on the waterfront, or a happy gathering of friends is in your plans this last stretch of 2021, indulge your desires and head over to The Winery at Sunshine Ridge Farm…book a flight of wine, or nab a local brew, and soak up the sun. Until next time, Happy Vino’ing!

More than 14,000 refugees have arrived at Dulles International Airport since Aug. 16 and thousands are being moved to military bases around the country, including Quantico Marine Corps base.
