A nyone else smell pumpkin spice? It's probably just me, and probably because I’m one of those people who can’t wait for fall. Sweaters come out of storage and, as the weather cools, I’m energized. I refresh the house and I refresh my look (by which I mean my hair, which always needs it after the sweltering summer!). If you enjoy this kind of “refreshment” as well, don’t miss our Fall Beauty Refresh section. Of course fall also heralds the return of school. And while I like to think most teachers are good, I happen to know that one teacher in particular is great. The kids in her class at Bull Run Mid dle love her. And the kids on her school bus do, too. Hurry on over to our Local Hero feature and meet the incredible Angela Leatham for yourself. We’ve got lots of terrific features this month, including a new one called The To-Do List. It’s filled with fun local things to do, see, read, and taste right here in Haymarket and Gainesville. (Feel free to send me items to include!) I hope you enjoy it and the rest of this issue. Cheers!

A pple picking is a time-honored fall tradition here in Virginia.Farms, festivals and roadside stands all cel ebrate the season with “pick your own” and “picked for you” abun dance – something I sim ply can’t resist. And then there’s the apple butter. It wouldn’t be a real Virginia fair or festival without a huge kettle of spiced ap ples bubbling away over a crackling wood fire. Be still my heart. By the bushel or the peck, it’s time to get into the kitchen with your orchard haul. Celebrate the harvest season with festival-quality spiced apple butter that you can make at home in your slow cooker, and whip up a twist on a traditional ap ple crisp with cranberry and walnuts for dessert.

It’s a Family – and Friends – Thing Bridget is surrounded by philanthropic and progres sive friends and family. Her older brother Kyle founded the organization Kyle’s Campaign for Change (KCC) as a teenager to help type 1 diabetics in South Sudan, and family friends Mallory Slucher and Phoebe McChesney started the organization Spread Your Wings (SYW) to award four-year scholarships to women in South Sudan who want an education. Why South Sudan KCC, SYW, and HK2L focus their efforts on South Sudan because Bridget’s father, Dr. Mark Thaller, spent years living and working there. Consequently, his kids have been familiar with the country all their life. Dr. Thaller was a naval officer, worked on Wall Street, and is now an advisor for KCC and SYW.
South Sudan Minister of Federal Affairs Losuba Wongo is an occasional houseguest at the Thaller residence. Dr. Thaller said, “He’s known Bridget since she was six. Hear Above: The girls’ dormitory at Divine Mercy OrphanageActionis not yet built, so the girls sleep on the floor. Here, they’re asking her if she can play with them by swinging them around.
How 15-year-old Bridget Thaller is helping the world
B ridget Thaller was born and raised in Virgin ia, the youngest of four siblings and a rising sophomore at Patriot High School. She’s got a penchant for deadpan humor but, outside of the hours at track practice after school, she spends her free time very seriously running the international organization she founded, Help Kids 2 Live (HK2L), whose focus is on improving the lives of girls in South Sudan.

“Most of the time the girls from South Sudan get married off and don’t get a chance to get an education,” Bridget said. No access to menstrual products and a cultural priority on getting mar ried as early as 12 years old severely restrict a girl’s education.
Once Phoebe and Mallory went to college, Bridget was ready for the next step. She established HK2L in January of this year as a way to help at-risk children, and she decided to start with the kids at Divine Mercy Action orphanage.
DMA now has a new, concrete building with two floors and pillars in place to support additional floors. The build ing is bare, save for a small fridge and VCR on the bottom floor powered by solar cells. There are nearly 100 children at DMA, from six to 19 years old. At some point, when the Bottom left: Bridget at the front of a classroom at the Straight Link orphanage in Gudele. Help Kids to Live (HK2L) is assisting the orphanage
building is complete, the kids will be able to replace their tents with rooms.
HK2L’s website states that its “first project is trying to help DMA by raising money to buy food, building supplies, school supplies, shoes, and other things.” They plan to catalyze DMA’s construction projects using Dr. Thaller’s contacts to get building materials.

“My dad brought me the original idea of working with the orphanage. We talked about it for a while, eventually decid ing it would be a good first effort for HK2L,” said Bridget.

Two years ago, Kyle made a trip to Juba, South Sudan, with his father. They met with Minister Wongo who invited them on a picnic where he took them to the Divine Mercy Ac tion (DMA) orphanage. The Divine Mercy Action orphanage DMA was established by Father Paolino Tipo Dengin in 2017 and is about 60 miles outside of the capital of Juba.
“I’ve seen many orphanages, I’ve helped many, including those in South Sudan,” said Dr. Thaller. “Unfortunately, most are so sad that you don’t want to take pictures. But DMA is clean and the boys and girls are eating.”
Empowering South Sudanese girls Being educated by her family on South Sudan and the lives of girls in that country motivated Bridget to get involved. Before launching HK2L, she joined SYW, whose mission “is to ensure every girl in South Sudan can read, teach, represent, and grow,” because “SYW wants to help young girls to become future leaders of South Sudan.”

In July, Bridget and her dad went from their Virginia Gateway home to South Sudan, meeting ministers, the vice president, and Pope Francis. “It was pretty cool,” Bridget said regarding being on Pope Francis’s agenda.
Between homework and track, Bridget maintains HK2L in the evenings and on weekends and sometimes her life as an advocate bleeds into her life as a high schooler. Once when advertising HK2L at track practice, she found out one of her coaches owned a running store. Her coach pledged to donate any gently used returned shoes to HK2L.
A trip to the orphanage
Of course it’s just as important to her to help others however possible. “I try to help as many people as I can, whether I help them a lot or a little. Even the smallest of things can make a person's day better,” she said. Whether it’s about helping other teens start a nonprofit or helping people around the world get the resources they need to live a better life, Bridget said,”Helping a little is still a great step in paving a path for a better future.” hg
Once they returned home, Bridget immediately went to work as a camp counselor and continued as a lifeguard at SplashDown Waterpark. Typical teen summer jobs. But she also carved out time to see her friends and family.
people are in, especially the girls. It’s not something that’s top of mind for people since the situation has been bad for a while. People don’t know what’s going on or what the war is about. They just know that it’s a bad place to be.”

“I’ll get emails from kids saying how they feel like I understand what they are going through and I’m someone they can talk to,” says Leatham. One thing she consistently does to end every week on a positive note is play the Friday song. “Every Friday I play the Friday song by a man named Mufasa, who also dances to this song. Sometimes I get the kids up and we try to dance with him, but we haven't mastered it yet. The kids love it!”
W
hen Angela Leatham of Haymarket went back to school, her goal was to obtain her teaching certification. She had already been volunteering in her children’s schools assisting teachers in the classroom as well as substitute teaching for many years.
That’s why I started driving a bus— these kids were waiting up to 40 minutes for a bus each day, and they just wanted to go home.
About five years ago, Leatham took on another role to help students. While she was teaching at Parkside Middle School in Manassas, students were waiting a long time to get home due to a bus driver shortage. So, the school principal at Parkside, Dr. Mary Jane Boynton, started a program offering teachers bus driver training if they would be willing to be drivers before and after school.
“That's why I started driving a bus,” she says. “These kids were waiting up to 40 minutes for a bus each day, and they just wanted to go home.”
“I felt like it was my calling,” she says. “I'm pretty good with kids and while I was volunteering, I loved helping with any prob lems they were having.”
“I’ve only taught 6th and 8th grades,” says Angela,”and I fell in love with middle-school aged kids. Yes, some of the rumors are true about middle schoolers being tough. So, it’s important, just like in other grades, for them to have really good teachers.”
“I've only taught 6th and 8th grades, and I fell in love with middle-school aged kids. Yes, some of the rumors are true about middle schoolers being tough. All those hormones are starting to come out, and I feel like they are in the most awkward time of their lives. So, it’s import ant, just like in other grades, for them to have really good teachers.”Having four kids of her own – 21-year-old Mason and 19-year-old Parker, who are both attending NOVA, plus Liam, a 10th grader at Gainesville High School, and Camil la, who is in 8th grade at Reagan – has given her plenty of insight into her students.
Today, she’s been teaching for seven years and over the past year, has been teaching 6th grade social studies and covering a homeroom at Bull Run Middle School.

At the end of last school year, Leatham was given the Gainesville Hero Award to recognize all that she does for students in and out of the classroom.
“I've never seen people prouder of me in my whole life than those 6th grade kids. It was the cutest thing. They were showing it to other students in the hallway and saying, ‘Look what she got; she's a hero!’” That plaque is now proudly displayed in her classroom.
“That was fun,” she says. “Prince William County District Supervisor Pete Candland and others brought a plaque and balloons. When the kids got off the bus, they had me come out. He then gave a short speech about me and how I give back to the community.
In addition to all her other roles, she also coaches for the Virginia Soccer Association. “Whenever I go out, I know some child’s going to recognize me,” says Leatham. “I'm either going to be called teacher or coach.”
When Leatham transferred over to Bull Run, she continued driving. “I pick up the bus around 6:45 in the morning, and then I'm back to the school by 8:00. Classes start at 8:00, so I walk in with all the students. After school, the kids come out at 2:55 and get on the bus. I’m usually finished by 3:50 – 4:00.” Her students think it’s great, and as a teacher, she knows how to handle kids when they get somewhat rambunctious.“Therewasone bus specifically at Parkside that had kids who were always getting into trouble, until I was given their route. Many of the students were only Spanish speaking, and since I speak Spanish, it was easier for me to communicate with them. I was clear about how they were going to behave on the bus and they were so good; I never had a problem.”

Once she met her husband and started her family, she listened to the close family and friends who encouraged her to pursue her passion for hair and makeup and attended cosmetology school.

Marcus understands the dangers well. “You just have to be focused all the time,” he says. “You always have to be thinking ahead and paying attention to your surroundings.”
Although he only started racing go-karts last year and has been competing against far more experienced kids, he’s already won many races, including the championship in his division last year. His home track is United Karting in Hanover, Mary land, but he also competes at tracks all over the region in cluding North Carolina, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.

Marcus Wolfe’s future is in the fast lane
TowardRacingaDream:
Marcus often gets up to 65 miles an hour when racing around a track, so it’s important he has the proper safety gear. “He wears a fire suit, a helmet, and a neck roll called a HANS device, which is the same thing they wear in NASCAR,” says Richie. “He also wears special racing shoes, racing gloves, and a rib protector, which is like body armor that goes around his chest and ribs. The most alarming thing for Brenda or any mom or parent is that there are no seatbelts in these karts. There’s nothing strapping them in because if they were to overturn, you don’t want them to be trapped inside.”
Brenda says he’s had a couple of close calls with run ning off the track or getting pushed off. “He gets right back in there though; we're real proud of him. A couple of weeks ago he had a race where his tire would not stay sealed and it kept losing air. He ran a 12-lap race and eight of those laps were with a flat tire. He just stayed in it and still came in second place. The kid’s got heart and it's so fun to watch.”
Marcus’s kart is an LO206 which has the same motor as the ones grown men drive. “These karts are capable of go ing just shy of a hundred miles an hour, so they put a slide restrictor in the carburetor, which limits the speed for the little guys,” says Richie. “These go-karts aren't beach karts. They have extremely advanced braking systems, tires, engines, and aerodynamics.”
BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOS BY LUKE CHRISTOPHER M arcus Wolfe of Bristow grew up watching NA SCAR with his dad Richie, and now at 12, he is on track to one day be a professional driver.
“It's just so fun because it's fast and you're always battling with someone else,” says Marcus. “There’s a lot of adrenaline.”It’sthefast part that makes his mom Brenda’s heart speed up. “He's been talking about racing since he could talk,” she says. “We have videos of him in his crib on the baby monitor asking about going to see Denny Hamlin [American professional stock-car racing driver and NA SCAR team owner]. He even dressed up as Denny Hamlin one Halloween. He's got such a passion for it and I'd be doing him a disservice if I held him back. So we say our prayers and just let him be him.”

Racing has become a real family affair. “My dad’s up every night before the races, working on my kart, trying to make it faster,” says Marcus. Richie also packs the trail er, unloads it, and plans the race registrations. Marcus’s 16-year-old brother, Joey, is crew chief of the Wolfe Pack Racing team and also recently started racing himself. A student of Marstellar Middle School, Marcus is active in other sports as well such as motocross, mountain biking and skateboarding. “I love riding my bike with my best friend, Jack McGehee,” he says. “We're always outside unless it’s raining.” Brenda says they’re a very active family. “We all love to be outside camping or just hanging out in the driveway, watching the kids ride their bikes.” Adds Richie, “I'm always on a boat or fishing or hunt ing and the kids have always tagged along.”
Race entry fees alone start at $100 to $200 for local rac es and can run up to $1,500 for national races, so the fami ly also has sponsors who help them out. “Daniel Beery is an authorized franchisee of Snap-On Tools in Northern Virginia and he's been a tremendous help,” says Brenda. “He gave us a toolbox with lots of tools and a bunch of tents and coolers,” says Marcus. “He also helps us with race tires.”

Brenda adds, “My husband’s uncle, Bob Wolfe, lives in Maryland and he's an older gentleman. He hasn't been feeling too good lately, but even he comes out to see Mar cus. He says he’s his number one fan.”
LowKey Racing in Hanover has also been amazing, she says. “They’re a race team led by Eric King, Amy Bitz and Ryan Miller III. They took an interest in Marcus last year and asked him to be on their team.” They also taught Richie a lot about go-karts. Since go-kart racing is an expensive sport, they get oth er kinds of support as well. “Marcus’s cousin, Joey Pyles, donated a race trailer to our team to haul the kart, which is huge,” says Richie.
