BEST SENIOR CARE SERVICES

Seniors Places - Gainesville

Seniors Places is a directory of all the best assisted living, independent living, and memory care communities in Virginia. Capitol Ridge in Bristow and Legacy Ridge in Gainesville are two of the more than fifteen Gainesville area communities listed in the Seniors Places directory. You can check them out at SeniorsPlaces.com/assisted-living-virginia-gainesville

f you’ve ever tried to find the best place for an aging parent or grandparent to reside, you know what a difficult and frequently frustrating process it can be. Seniors Places is here to help and, judging by the company’s 2021 win for Best Senior Care Services, many of you believe they’re helping a lot. Seniors Places is a free resource created to break the third party process and help seniors and their families find assisted living facilities, memory care, and independent living communities. Its online directory contains more than 400 of these facilities in Virginia, and allows seniors and their families to learn about and tour each virtually. When you find something you like, you can make an appointment for an in-person tour right on the website. Determining what type of residence your loved one needs starts with knowing what each type offers: Independent Living Independent living is ideal for individuals who can still live independently but enjoy having access to assistance when needed. Independent living communities provide residents with convenient access to dining, medical care, entertainment and more. The independent living lifestyle offers a safe environment with minimal assistance. Hospitality services, such as housekeeping, meals, and laundry may or may not be

Assisted Living Assisted living is part of a continuum of long term care services that provides a combination of housing, personal care services, and health care. It is designed to respond to the needs of individuals who require assistance with normal daily activities in a way that promotes maximum independence.

Memory Care Memory care is a type of specialized care for people living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Communities typically feature safe and secure environments where staff can closely monitor the health of the residents. You’ll also find programs, activities, and events that are designed to help memory care residents work on their cognitive abilities, while also getting to enjoy passions and hobbies. Staff are specially trained to provide the quality care needed for seniors with memory loss. Dedicated to being the best, fastest, and most efficient solution for finding independent living, assisted living, and memory care in Virginia, why not make Seniors Places’ extensive database the first stop in your search for the best residence for your senior? BEST DOCTOR AND PHYSICIAN OFFICE

Lifetime Family Medicine

L

ifetime Family Medicine strives to provide the best care possible for all of its patients and, judging by the practice’s 2021 win for Best Doctor And Physician Office, lots of you feel they do just that. Located in Gainesville, Lifetime Family Medicine is owned by Dr. Theresa Shupe, a practitioner whose accolades include being named to Washingtonian Magazine’s annual list of Top Doctors. Isn’t it nice to know you don’t have to drive to Fairfax or Loudoun or even D.C. to get great care? At Lifetime Family Medicine, the focus is on preventative care. Patients receive innovative medical attention via a combination of clinical expertise, a wellness focus, and modern technologies. The practice offers many services including pediatrics, general health, and acute care, as well as cosmedic and weight loss services, diabetes management and health, asthma, and heart health. In addition, there are

vaccine and lab test resources right on site. Regarding Dr. Theresa Shupe, she is board certified in family medicine and specializes in pediatrics, women’s health, weight management, and wellness care for all ages. She’d like you to know, however, that it is the entire staff that contributes to patient satisfaction. Every single member of the Lifetime Family Medicine team knows and adheres to the fact that patient care comes first. So just who are the rest of the medical providers on the Lifetime team? They’re Julian Hoang, DO, a physician board certified in family medicine; physician’s assistants Sarah E. Kelleher, PA-C; Nida Arif, MSPAS, PA-C; and Mark Mechak, PA-C, and nurse practitioners Dorris Glaspy, FNP and Veronica Hall, FNP-C. All of them, including the clinical staff, administrative staff, and front desk staff, are committed to delivering only the highest quality care.

Lifetime Family Medicine is also part of the Privia Medical Group, a physicianled, multi-specialty, national medical firm dedicated to providing better coordinated care to patients. Privia oversees Lifetime Family Medicine’s credentialing, adherence to medical compliance, and quality measures, which leaves the practice free to focus solely on the care of its patients. Beyond providing stellar patient care, Lifetime Family Medicine is actively involved in the community and committed to remaining so. The practice participates frequently in local events like Haymarket Day (coming up on October 16!) and throughout the year collects nonperishable food items, as well as hygiene and household items for the Haymarket Regional Food Pantry. 14535 John Marshall Hwy, Ste 105, Gainesville; P: 703-754-0425; W: LTFM.net; FB: @LifetimeFamilyMedicine

BEST DAYCARE CENTER AND PRESCHOOL

Haymarket Baptist Church Preschool and Kindergarten

D

eciding where your little one will go to daycare or start school is a big deal. You want your child to be safe and still have fun, learn and feel loved. With the number of votes cast for Haymarket Baptist Church Preschool and Kindergarten, it’s clear you feel the school gets an “A” in meeting those requirements. Established in 1989 with two classrooms, two teachers and one teaching assistant, this year’s Best Daycare Center and Preschool has grown exponentially since then, yet still offers small classrooms, personalized teaching methods, and Christian-based instruction. Teacher ratios are one teacher for 12 students for kindergarten; 1 to 8 for 3 and 4 year olds and 1 to 6 for 2 ½ year olds. All teachers have early education training. Some earned degrees in other specialties – like business or journalism – and then returned to school for early childhood education, and several have master’s degrees. All of them

pursue continuing education credits annually. Director Laurie Frasz said that teachers strive to give their students a good foundation; they hope to instill a joy of learning and a love of God. That goal is evident in the design of the classrooms – Bible stories adorn the walls, alongside colorful drawings of letters, numbers and a variety of lessons. Beyond the classrooms there’s some serious fun stuff. Two playgrounds, one for little ones and one for older children, offer a safe, exciting place to run, jump and play, and an extra-special feature of the school is its after-school enrichment program. Parents can sign their children up for activities like gymnastics, Spanish language lessons, and cooking classes. Haymarket Baptist Preschool and Kindergarten offers morning, afternoon and all-day classes. Some are two days a week, others three days, and still others are five

“It is an honor to serve our community and serve the Lord. There is good, better or best – and we will always continue to strive for best. We so appreciate the parents who voted for us and hope to always make you proud of the programs we offer.” —LAURIE FRASZ, D I R E C T O R , H AY M A R K E T BAPTIST CHURCH PRESCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN

BEST CASUAL AND FAMILY RESTAURANT

Foster’s Grille - Haymarket

C

learly, you love the fresh, casual food and the chance to gather with family and friends at Foster’s Grille, a Haymarket staple since 1999. Renovated extensively just a few short years ago, your pick for this year’s Best Casual and Family Restaurant is renowned for its burgers. The Olde Fashioned Charburger includes a half pound of meat — that’s eight ounces of delicious, fresh, U.S.A. beef with no preservatives — in one sandwich. Equally popular are Foster’s chicken sandwiches, wings, and chicken fingers. Foster’s uses only all-natural, white breast meat from farm-raised chickens. And the wings are jumbo-sized and always fresh, never frozen. On the sandwich side of the Foster’s Grille menu, you’ll find a Philly Cheesesteak, Turkey Burger, Oven Roasted Turkey Sandwich, Backyard Garden Burger, and the Foster’s Famous All-Beef Grilled Hot Dog. You can also get a garden salad topped with chicken, and sides of fries or onion rings. But wait. There’s more. Beyond its famous Charburger, Foster’s

specializes in extra thick milkshakes. You know, the kind you've got to have on a hot day or any day just because you can’t stop thinking about them. For a seriously delicious experience, try one with a meal, alone, or for dessert. You can even bring the Foster’s Grill experience home for whatever kind of event you’re hosting. Its Backyard BBQ catering menu offers wings, platters, meatballs, and fruit, as well as entrees like burgers, sausage, bbq ribs, and grilled chicken. Cole slaw, baked beans, potato salad, and green salads are a few of the options for side dishes, and sheet cakes, cookies, and brownies are available for dessert. Beyond feeding our stomachs, Foster’s Grille - Haymarket feeds the soul of our community through its active involvement with our schools and athletic programs. During the school year, diners will frequently find athletes gathered for team parties, teens grabbing a bite after hockey practice, or families gathered for a quick preor post-practice or game dinner. snack smart and reduce 1 cavities

Always try to incorporate your kids in planning their meals and snacks. Who wants a tuna sandwich or raisins if they hate it? With COVID, there will be no opportunities to trade with classmates. Get their input from the get-go and make it fun by color coding each container.

As thousands of kids in our area head back to the classroom, they and their parents are feeling a lot of different emotions—fear, excitement, and apprehension—to name a few. Paying a little more attention to the snacks your children take to school could prevent tooth pain from making that list this year. Finding a healthy balance between easy to prepare and tasty snacks that kids will actually eat is tough for a lot of families. Here are three simple snack tips that will keep their energy levels high and the number of cavities low:

30

{ SEPTEMBER 2021 |

2

Select snacks that have limited sugar but still taste good. Try sugar free pudding packs, mandarin orange slices, or letting your child make their own trail mix with healthy nuts and limited dried fruits. Cavities are formed when bad germs use the extra sugar in the mouth to produce an acid that eats your enamel. Untreated small cavities become large cavities and hurt. Making sure to limit sugars while still adding color can be a great way to keep bellies full, brains alert, and surprise cavities away.

HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

3

Limit how many snacks your child consumes while at school or at home. The more you eat without brushing or flossing, the more sugar stays in the mouth and in the grooves of teeth. The bad germs love it! Make sure to have kids brush their teeth and floss before bed to keep their mouths clean and get rid of all the extra food particles from the day. Deciding what to pack for lunch or snack can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. Include your child in meal and snack planning to get them excited about the week. Snacks are a great way to boost energy, but it’s important to limit sugary ones. It’s also important to see your dentist at least twice per year to help reduce cavities and stay out of pain. Stay smart and snack well!

rior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Michael Travis, 71, and his wife of more than 51 years, Loretta, were avid travelers. They’ve been to more than 80 countries and territories worldwide. Michael and Loretta have climbed mountains, ridden in hot air balloons, walked on glaciers and explored jungles. However, chronic knee pain nearly put a stop to that. Although Loretta urged him to see a doctor for years, Travis was apprehensive about seeking treatment. It was only when Loretta came across an article in a local magazine about a patient who had a very successful outcome from a total knee replacement performed via MAKOplasty (Mako), that Travis realized this was the answer he was looking for.

JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERY

According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, total joint replacement

(TJR) is one of the most commonly performed elective surgical procedures in the United States. Furthermore, robotic-assisted surgeries have become the popular option among orthopedic surgeons because of the improved accuracy and precision, greater visualization, and easier recovery for patients. “Robotic surgery prevents inadvertent cuts, protecting important structures around the knee, like nerves and vessels,” said John Kim, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Haymarket Medical Center, now part of UVA Health. “Traditionally, we would have to make bigger incisions to place protective retractors to accomplish this, but robotic surgery allows less dissection which leads to less pain.” Compared to traditional surgery, Mako patients have reduced risk of infection and blood loss and experience faster recovery time, shorter postoperative hospitalization, reduced pain, smaller incisions and minimal scarring. “[Mako] takes the traditional knee arthroplasty surgery from a good surgery

HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

On Nov. 19, 2020, Travis underwent his first total knee replacement with Mako. “From the moment I woke up, I was confident that it was done right,” he recalled. He never took more than a Tylenol for the pain and was up and walking within days of his procedure. “Mr. Travis recovered remarkably,” said Kim. “He was walking without any assistive device by week one. I had to check the chart to remind myself which knee I had replaced!” Travis had such a positive experience with his first Mako procedure, he underwent his second, which was just as successful as the first, this past March.

JOURNEY TO A PAIN-FREE LIFE

Recovery times vary by patient, and Travis worked hard to ensure his success. He implemented an exercise routine and lost 15 pounds prior to his first surgery. And he was diligent about going to physical therapy after both procedures. For those who may be on the fence about seeking treatment for knee pain, Travis says his only regret is not doing it sooner. “Invest in making yourself feel better,” Travis urges. “You don’t need to suffer any more than you already have.” Kim agrees, “The combination of robotic surgery and a motivated patient makes the recovery process easy.”

oaches can have a huge influence in young athletes’ lives, and not just on the playing field. They are often vital in instilling important values such as responsibility, hard work, and humility, and some become much more than coaches to their young players. One coach who touched many lives was Jamal Powell, a Texas Christian University standout and former NFL and CFL (Canadian Football League) player. “Coach Powell had a tremendous impact on me,” says Casey Kroll, who played football for Powell at James Madison University and later followed him into the Texas coaching circuit. “When I met Coach Powell in my senior year at JMU, I was at a crossroads in my life. I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do after I graduated, and had aspirations to be a lawyer. But then I looked at Coach Powell and thought ‘What a cool job he has. He’s making such a difference in young people’s lives.’ He was someone I looked up to and who helped me through some difficult times as a student, as an athlete, and as a young person.” When Coach Powell was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome in 2018, he not only lost a considerable amount of weight but also lost feeling and motor function in his extremities. Months later, after spending a significant amount of time in the hospital, Powell was then diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer. After undergoing surgery to remove the cancer, it returned in the summer of 2020, this time in his stomach. “People within the Southern Methodist University, where Coach Powell had been the assistant football coach, and the JMU football community as well as the Dallas community helped in whatever capacity they could,” says Kroll. During this time, Kroll was working on starting The Big Man Foundation, a 501(3)(c) organization that would help coaches and their families going through crises like the Powell’s. Sadly, Coach Powell passed away in April at the age of 39, and the name of COURTESY CHRIS BROOKS, JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

the organization is a tribute to him; Powell called his offensive line unit the “Big Man Fraternity.” “We had a really great opportunity to expand his legacy and there’s no better way to honor him than by helping others, so that’s what our real drive is - being able to help and serve other coaches,” says Kroll. Kroll, a native of Nokesville, missed his family and left Texas to come back home. “I then got linked up with Coach Greg Hatfield, who was my high school coach when I was at Kettle Run High School. They had an opening on their staff and I was fortunate enough to get an opportunity to work with him. When he recently left to coach at Battlefield High School, I went with him and am now serving as the offensive line coach.” Today, Kroll is the founder and president of The Big Man Foundation, which has been in operation since December 2020. “We’ve had over 100 people donate so far, and we have five or six ambassadors and six board members.” The first Jamal Powell Legacy Grant will be bestowed later this year. The deadline to apply for this quarter is September 3 and the amount of money given will depend on the number of people who apply and how much

36

{ SEPTEMBER 2021 |

money the organization raises. Instead of just choosing one family, they hope to be able to help a few different families. “Right now, our goal is to give out grants quarterly, but we also want to have emergency financial relief available, which may be needed right away,” says Kroll. Their focus right now is to get the word out about their organization. “We have to make a big push to get people to share who we are, what we do, and why it’s important. We just recently started an ambassador program for people in the athletics community who align with our mission and to share that mission. “Aaron Stinnie was so passionate about it he became one of our board members,” says Kroll. “I played with him at JMU for Coach Powell, and he now plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who recently won the Super Bowl.” Also on the board is Blaine Stewart, a teammate of Kroll at JMU and currently the coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers; Bryan Schor, quarterback of the JMU 2016 National Championship team; Lou Chiccehitto, Kroll’s college roommate; Dr. Jennifer Taylor, Kroll’s professor at JMU; and Aaron Epstein, who was Powell’s neighbor and also worked in fundraising at JMU.

The 100% volunteer-based organization hopes to raise $120,000 by the end of this year. “Every decision we’ve made up until this point has not been based around what is best for The Big Man Foundation right now, but instead focused on our long-term growth and solvency and looking at what we want to be doing five or 10 years from now,” says Kroll. Besides illness-related expenses, The Big Man Foundation will also help coaches and their families affected by natural disasters or domestic violence. In the future, he hopes the foundation will be able to help in even larger ways, such as paying off someone’s mortgage or all of their medical bills. “One of our other goals, and this is really close to my heart, is to be able to hire Coach Powell’s wife, Rachel Powell, to work with us, to be able to give her a job and stability. And it would be an awesome opportunity to work with someone who has lived our mission and knows why we’re doing what we do.” When the board receives applications for grants, it’s going to look at each applicant on a case-by-case basis to find out what that particular person’s needs are and how they can best help each family. “We aim to give financial resources, but some people might not need those, and instead need some other type of support such as a therapist or baby sitter. One of the things Mrs. Powell needed was someone to watch her children and go to the grocery store. With three kids (Jaden, now 13, Ellison, 8, and William, 5) and a husband in a wheelchair, she needed help with daily tasks. The foundation would also like to expand to include a wellness outreach program for student athletes and coaches. “We’re going to try to work with schools and sports teams, and we’re sharing resources with Morgan’s Message, a nonprofit working to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community.” Like every nonprofit, The Big Man Foundation needs funding, and lots of it, to fulfill its long-term mission. If people aren’t in a place to help financially, they can volunteer their time and/or talent. Families in crisis often need reliable and caring babysitters, house cleaners, tutors to help children with homework, and/or counselors for emotional support. People can also help by getting its message out, following the organization on social media, and/or signing up to become an ambassador. To find out how you can help support and refer families, or if you are a coach in need, please visit TheBigManFoundation.org. For more information on Morgan’s Message, visit MorgansMessage.org.

The girl’s got voice: 13-year-old Ariela Griggs enters her first competition and takes first place BY BETH LUNA | PHOTOS BY PAUL LARA

H

ow does a young girl come to use her voice in the world of classical music? Well, it may have started with lullabies for Gainesville resident Ariela Griggs. “Ariela loved singing from a very young age,” said Amalia Griggs about her daughter. “She was the typical young girl singing Disney songs and other popular music.” But it was her father John who would sing her to sleep at night with songs from musicals like Camelot, Man of La Mancha, Sound of Music, and Fiddler on the Roof. “That was her introduction to classical music, and she loved it,” Amalia added. Fortunately for Ariela, a student at Saint Veronica Catholic School in Chantilly, she and her sisters Camila and Amanda take dance classes at Virginia National Ballet (VNB), where founder and managing director Elysabeth Muscat, a former professional opera singer, teaches vocal lessons. “Ariela has been studying with me since October 2017,” Elysabeth said. “She started when she was nine and she is now 13. Normally, I wouldn’t take a student that young, but she was very interested, so I offered her a trial lesson. She was very attentive and took corrections well, so we started weekly lessons.” Elysabeth and Ariela worked on short, easy Disney songs like “Once Upon a Dream” from Sleeping Beauty, “Candle on the Water” from Pete’s Dragon, and “In My Own Little Corner” from Cinderella. Progress was slow and steady. “I could see she was very

After each lesson, Ariela is given different areas to practice. “I have noticed that the singing lessons have also improved her discipline, breathing, speech clarity, posture, and work toward achieving goals,” said her mother, Amalia.

Calling all musicians!

“Of all my students,” said Elysabeth Muscat, a former professional opera singer and Ariela’s voice teacher, “she is the only one who advanced to the finals, and she ended up taking first place. I am so proud of her achievement.”

talented but very young,” Elyzabeth said. “She couldn’t really control her breath and her voice was underdeveloped but she was very mature, did well with my instruction, and worked hard.” “My interest in singing started with seeing musical movies like Phantom of the Opera, Sound of Music, and Fiddler on the Roof,” Ariela said, “so I would practice singing songs from those musicals. After I began taking singing lessons, I really wanted to learn to sing opera and classical music like my teacher at Virginia National Ballet -- she really inspired me.” Like many kids her age, Ariela has an ear for popular music, enjoying artists like Ariana Grande along with classical performers like Emmy Rossum of Phantom of the Opera. As her tastes grow and expand, so does her choice of material. “It’s fun now that I can give her a more interesting and challenging repertoire,” Elysabeth said. Ariela continued weekly lessons to develop her blossoming talent. “After each lesson, Ariela is given different areas to practice until the next one,” Amalia said. “I have noticed that the singing lessons have also improved her discipline, breathing, speech clarity, posture, and work toward achieving goals.” “She sang ‘The Sound of Music’ so beautifully at the VNB spring recital two years ago that we started working on George Gershwin’s ‘Summertime’ from Porgy and

Registration for the 2022 Music International Grand Prix competition is now open. For details, visit MusicInternationalGrandPrix.com.

This year’s Music International Grand Prix competition was judged by an esteemed panel of industry professionals including, from left to right, Per Brevig, trombone faculty at Juilliard and member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra; Diane Wittry, conductor and music director of the Garden State Philharmonic and Allentown Symphony Orchestra; Mark Cortale, Broadway producer and manager; and Terrence Wilson, Grammy nominated pianist.

Bess for her to perform at the 2020 recital,” Elysabeth said. “Sadly, that got canceled. But, because she continued to improve and sound great during the 2020-21 school year, I wanted her to enter the Music International Grand Prix competition.” Elysabeth and her husband Rafik, VNB’s artistic director, launched the Music International Grand Prix competition last year. “Rafi and I were brainstorming in February of 2020 and came up with the idea of doing a competition,” Elysabeth said. The event was originally scheduled to take place at New York City’s Zankel

Hall within Carnegie Hall, but when the pandemic hit they had to regroup. “We put the semi-finals on Zoom and it worked out really well – and by the time we could do the finals we were able to come together live, so we held them at the Hylton Performing Arts Center as Carnegie had not yet reopened.” Ultimately, the new competition attracted a group of distinguished judges and 350 applicants. Three hundred were selected for the semifinals and 100 for the finals. There were 20 first place winners from each of the categories, which include voice (classical and popular), piano, strings, winds/ brass, percussion, original composition, and ensembles, in four separate age groups: youth, teen, young adult, and adult. One overall winner was selected for the final Grand Prix Award. Ariela performed “Summertime” as her semifinal selection, singing virtually, and made it to the finals. From there, she and Elysabeth had to quickly prepare an additional piece, choosing the Bach/Gounod version of “Ave Maria.” At the finals in May, Ariela took first place in the youth classical voice category. “I was so proud of her bravery to sing before an audience,” Amalia said. “I was backstage with her as she prepared to make her entry, and she was nervous until she got on stage. Then, she just lit up with a big smile and really enjoyed herself. Singing in front of the judges was more of a challenge, but Ariela really feeds off being in front of an audience.” “This is the first competition I encouraged Ariela to enter because I didn’t want to send her before she was ready. Of all my students, she is the only one who advanced to the finals, and she ended up taking first place. I am so proud of her achievement.” Elysabeth makes the point that she is the organizer of the competition but not a judge; the judges came from universities all over the country and had no idea that Ariela studies with her. “I enjoyed getting ready for the competition and getting on stage to perform after practicing so much,” Ariela said. “The feeling of accomplishment after performing well is something I’ll never forget.”

Your Favorite Fall Festivals Are Back! BY BETH LUNA

As the calendar moves beyond a steamy, wet August, many of us start longing for that magical time known as fall in Virginia. After the cancellation of so many events in 2020, we are here to highlight some of our region’s most popular fall festivals as they reappear to usher in the new season!

Haymarket Day Saturday, October 16 | 10:00am to 4:00pm Downtown Haymarket | Free admission Information: townofhaymarket.org/community/page/ haymarket-day-2021

The annual parade kicks off this year’s Haymarket Day, a hometown street festival, on October 16. “People love the parade!’ shares Emily Lockhart, Town of Haymarket town planner and parade organizer. “It’s a special time to see kids dancing, bands, ROTC and other participants that come out and perform before entertainment begins on our two main stages.” Attended by over 20,000 spectators and 200 vendors, each stage features a beer garden hosted by 2 Silos Brewing with a variety of food choices up and down Washington Street. Live music begins at 11am on both stages showcasing students from School of Rock and Contemporary Music Center, with local bands Joe’s Dad and Elizabeth Lawrence Band and other performers taking the stage in the afternoon.

The Haymarket Museum will feature Haymarket Coffee Company collaborating with MurLarkey Distilled Spirits for special drinks in honor of the day. The Kids Zone is partnering with Park Valley Church to feature moon bounces and other fun kids’ activities – plus a mobile axe throwing trailer for the adults. “The street is typically crafters, local business owners, and non-profit organizations connecting with the community,” Emily said. “There are lots of crafters this year, so we are looking forward to that.” What are Emily’s personal favorite things to do at the festival? “Heading to the park area and visiting with the novelty food vendors – kettle corn, ice cream -- watching kids laughing and having a good time! And I also love hearing the music,” she shared. And while organizers monitor the Governor’s COVID-related mandates, right now everything is a go as-is. “We are super excited that we finally get to have it this year – we missed last year so much,” Emily said. “And of course, we are hoping for beautiful weather!”

Transform 66 project on schedule for 2022 completion

Driving either direction on Interstate 66 west of Interstate 495, it’s impossible to miss the work on the 22.5-mile stretch of highway. But managers of the $3.7 billion Transform 66 project say work has never been moving faster. Currently, about $60 million of work is being done every month and nearly 2,000 workers are on the job every day according to Susan Shaw, the Virginia Department of Transportation’s regional transportation program director for Northern Virginia. “So Construction continues along Interstate there’s a lot happening,” she said. 66 near Manassas in this July 26 photo. Along most of the corridor, the focus is completing work toward the outside of the highway, so that traffic can then be diverted there while the toll lanes on the inside are being completed. That level of work is expected to continue through the fall, depending on the weather. BY PAUL LARA/INSIDENOVA

The Washington Football Team has announced updated policies and protocols at FedEx Field. The team said in a news release that fans are encouraged to wear Washington’s Burgundy and Gold colors, but themes tied to the franchise’s previous nickname, such as ceremonial headdresses or face paint, will no longer be permitted in the stadium. The team also announced that face coverings are recommended for unvaccinated fans, mask guidelines will be updated according to local regulations, and tailgating, which was banned during the 2020 season, is once again permitted around the stadium.
