TIPS OF THE MONTH
THE DO’S AND DONT’S OF SELLING YOUR HOME! Many homeowners will tell you how emotional it was to buy their first home, but you rarely hear about their experience selling it. It’s only natural to grow attached after creating so many wonderful memories, which can make selling a challenging process. Fortunately, you’re not in it alone. Together, we can simplify the process and make sure you get top dollar when selling your home. WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? • Get your home ready for the market. We’ll collaborate on strategic repairs and updates, home staging, photography and more options to attract buyers. • Plan for your next move. We’ll work together to make sure that you’ve got your next home lined up when your current home sells. • Be aware of your timeline. While our goal is to sell your house fast, you never know what hiccups a buyer might encounter along the way. Being aware of your timeline is essential. • Prepare to negotiate. After the home inspection, the buyer may ask for repairs or concessions. That’s why it’s always best for you to have a local real estate expert represent you when selling. WHAT SHOULDN’T YOU DO? • Don’t assume you have to sell in the spring. Homes are sold every day. In fact, it can often be in your best interest to avoid selling in the spring because you’ll have less competition. Ultimately, the right time to sell is when you’re ready. • Don’t price based on your emotions. You value your beloved home, but if it’s priced beyond its worth, it will sit on the market. We’ll review local comps and discuss your home’s market value together. • Don’t forget to plan for the closing. To seal the deal, be fully prepared for settlement. Bring your ID and be prepared to review and sign paperwork. • Have you been thinking about selling your home? Or are you just curious about what it’s worth in today’s market? Reach out today for a comprehensive review....there’s never a ‘bad’ time to start!

Debunking myths and setting the record straight about flu season BY SUSAN TULINO
We’re often too quick to assume the dreaded influenza virus is to blame for any wintertime sick days. Flu is a likely suspect for any wintertime illness. The reason? Many of us don’t actually know much about the flu. Frederick W. Parker, III, MD, M.Ed, a family medicine provider at Novant Health UVA Health System Bull Run Family Medicine - Manassas helps us set the record straight about the flu by debunking some common misconceptions.
MYTH #1: THE FLU IS JUST A BAD COLD R E A L I T Y : Body aches, runny noses and sore throats can be signs of either the cold or the flu, but if you do have the flu, expect these symptoms to be much more dramatic and last longer. Symptoms of the flu can include fever, cough, congestion, chills, severe fatigue, body aches, headaches, sore throat, nausea and vomiting. These symptoms come on quickly, last up to a week and are often severe. “Nearly 100,000 Americans are hospitalized with the flu each year,” said Dr. Parker. “It can become life-threatening,

particularly in infants, elderly patients and those with compromised immune systems. Even if you aren’t in these groups, it’s important to see a doctor if you show signs of dehydration, have a fever of 103 degrees or higher and are experiencing difficulty breathing, severe dizziness or persistent vomiting.” A cold, on the older hand, manifests in fewer, more mild symptoms and typically goes away in about a week.
MYTH #2: FLU SEASON IS ONLY DURING THE WINTER R E A L I T Y : There’s a reason you see pharmacies and doctors’ offices
HAYMARKET LIFESTYLE
}
promoting flu vaccines even before summer has ended. Flu season generally begins in November but can start at any point in the fall or winter and peak any time between December and March. In fact, in March of 2019, the Virginia Department of Health reported that Virginia was still classified as having widespread flu activity for the 11th straight week. “While we strongly encourage patients to get their vaccinations early, the reality is that getting a flu shot in March is better than not getting a flu shot at all,” said Dr. Parker. Dr. Parker also advised that the “summer flu” is a very real thing and the virus can strike even when the weather is hot. People who travel internationally should always pay close attention to any symptoms that appear since the flu peaks in different parts of the world during different times of year.
MYTH #3: FLU SHOTS ARE INEFFECTIVE AND CAN MAKE YOU SICK
“While we strongly encourage patients to get their vaccinations early, the reality is that getting a flu shot in March is better than not getting a flu shot at all,”
R E A L I T Y : This is a common misconception because some people feel under the weather for several days shortly after receiving their flu shot. This is the body’s immune system reacting to the vaccine, which actually means it’s responding appropriately. “It’s important to remember that the vaccine isn’t 100 percent effective in preventing the flu. There is still a chance of contracting the virus even with the vaccine, but some protection is always better than none,” said Dr. Parker. “There
are multiple types of influenza, and each year, researchers create a new vaccine based on evidence of what the strongest strain is likely to be. If you are exposed to a strain that is different than the vaccine, you could still catch the flu, but your immune system will be stronger in fighting it.”
MYTH #4: THE FLU IS A 24-HOUR BUG R E A L I T Y : People with the flu are typically ill for about a week but may only feel the worst of the symptoms for one day. This leads to the common misconception that the flu can come and go in just 24 hours. In reality, rallying from a bout with the flu will take more than just a day or two. Though nausea and other hard-hitting symptoms may subside or disappear, you’re likely to feel weak for several days. “As much as you may want to get back to work, school or your day-today routine, letting your body rest and heal is an important part of recovering from the flu,” said Dr. Parker. “Having the flu affects the whole body and trying to get back into the swing of things too quickly can prolong the illness.” With flu season upon us, all of us should take precautions against exposure to the virus – and unknowingly transmitting it before symptoms begin to show. Washing your hands frequently, coughing and sneezing into a sleeve or tissue and, most importantly, making sure to get the flu shot are effective ways to make it out of flu season unscathed. ❖

Managing Oral Complications in Cancer Patients BY DR. TONTRA P. LOWE, DDS
“J
ust start counting from 10 to 1 for me.” These were the words my oral surgeon said as I started to drift off during my wisdom teeth extraction appointment. The next thing I knew, I had a mouth full of gauze, and the sun was shining directly in my eyes through the window. The procedure was over, but it seemed like I had just gone to sleep. For me, it was easy; but for those with a recent or current cancer diagnosis, a simple procedure in the mouth could wreak havoc on their overall health and recovery regardless of the type of cancer. Living well with a cancer diagnosis is possible armed with the right knowledge to go into battle and win. Managing the medical and dental aspects before and after treatment is key to living well. Be intentional and proactive versus reactive. People on your wellness team must sometimes weigh life against quality of life, and in order to do that well, you must have your family dentist, and sometimes an oral surgeon, be a part of the conversation. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2012 there were over 40,000 new oral cancer cases. Men with periodontal disease are 49% more likely to develop kidney cancer and 54% more likely to develop pancreatic or blood cancers. You must include your dentist in the battle plan for your treatment in order to improve outcomes for an extended quality of life. Remember, the mouth is a part of the body.

Dr. Tontra Lowe is a family, cosmetic, and sedation dentist at Awesome Smiles Dental Center located right next door to the Haymarket Kohl’s. She is one of a few dentists in Northern Virginia experienced to access medical benefits to pay for treatment in the mouth secondary to a medical condition or trauma.

Here are 5 points to remember if dealing with a cancer diagnosis: 1. Patients undergoing treatment for any cancer can develop mouth sores, dry mouth, and crumbling teeth. This is even more prevalent with radiation treatment for oral or throat cancer. 2. Request the oncologist call your dentist and get them involved in your care regardless of cancer type. 3. Remove any hopeless teeth and treat any cavities or gum disease before starting cancer treatment, if time allows. 4. Replace missing teeth to restore chewing function after cancer treatment and recovery. 5. Use medical insurance to help cover fees for treatment in the mouth if at all possible. Oral complications secondary to cancer diagnosis and treatment are common and can wreak havoc on other organs and in the mouth. Make sure to include your dentist in your care to improve quality of life and live well before the battle and after the victory. Being treated for cancer does not mean you cannot smile with confidence or resume chewing and functioning as before. Most PPO medical insurance plans will help pay fees for treatment in the mouth to get you back to swallowing and eating as usual. People pay hefty premiums for medical insurance— why not maximize any and all benefits? ❖

GOING GAINESVILLE GOES TO MYSTIC FLOW WELLNESS CENTER BY LESLEY SALMAN
W
hich “Best Of” category did Going Gainesville tip our hats to this month? Best holistic service and alternative medicine provider! And we couldn’t wait to get to the winner, Mystic Flow Wellness Center, located in the Piedmont Center Plaza in Gainesville. The adorably sweet McKenzie Hollingsworth from the Spotted Leopard, voted “Best Of” in antiques and furniture as well as interior design, accompanied me as my co-host to complete this twofer. We were anxious to learn more about Mystic Flow so we moseyed on over and sat down with owner Adriana Benoit and staff member, Shawna Carl, and asked them point blank: why do you think you won a Best Of award?
Their response? They told us the simple reason for their success is that they have the best clients. There's something to be said about a business that just cannot get their clients to stop spreading the word. And why are their clients so satisfied? Because they’re asked on a continual basis what services they want and the center listens and provides those services! Mystic Flow offers balance - services for your body including massages and flow therapy. They offer clarity which is astrology, coaching and readings, and harmony which consists of psychotherapy and TRE. In addition they offer floatation therapy and we had to know -- what’s all the hype about? Well, it takes place in a "pod" where you can create a custom experience with light, sound, etc to

either tune in or tune out the world and its never-ending stresses. The saltwater allows you to float effortlessly in body temperature water making it impossible to feel where your body ends and the water begins. It's the perfect way to relax and relieve any tensions. If you want to watch more and take a tour of this peaceful spa, you're in luck because the video can be found on Facebook at facebook.com/ goinggainesvilleva. Simply click on "videos" then scroll down to the Mystic Flow Wellness Center banner. Going Gainesville will be back next month to honor another of the Gainesville and Haymarket businesses you voted “Best Of” so don't miss this space or our video spotlights on all of your local favorites on Facebook! ❖

When and why did you decide to join this company? I love the company I work for and the people there; we have a long history together servicing telecommunications clients starting back in 1986 with Northern Telecom. SharpComm started in 1995 and I joined in 2004.
How does your business serve the local community? SharpComm services and supports Avaya and Mitel Enterprise phone systems in Fauquier, Fairfax, Prince William and Loudoun Counties. In addition, we’re agents for multiple carriers of UCaaS, hosted phone systems and Polycom and we sell a variety of systems and video conferencing solutions to customers who need five phones or more.
Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your current profession. I was supposed to bring coffee and donuts at 4 AM to an area hospital for my techs who were pulling an “all nighter.” They

were switching out the entire voice communications system at a busy hospital overnight while the phones were in operation…every phone, in every room was being replaced with new. The project was supposed to go into the morning, but they were done four hours ahead of schedule and were walking out while I was walking in. It was flawless!
Tell us about your experience with the HGBA. How has it supported you in your local business? I’ve worked remotely for the past 15 years so networking with HGBA has helped me to connect with people. I always say that “I make a living connecting devices, but a make a life connecting people.” HGBA keeps me doing just that.
What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals? One: Be a great listener and keep your promises. Two: Be thankful and grateful always. Three: Stay current, continue educating yourself and read good books.
Are you from this area? If not, what brought you here and what do you like about our town? I’ve lived in Prince William since 1979, thanks to my military dad who was assigned to the Pentagon. I like that there is so much to do and it’s all so close to us.
What is your favorite season in this area, and why? Late spring, summer…. because I like being outside and love being on the water during boating season.
What are some hobbies you enjoy? Playing the piano, reading, boating, traveling, swimming (well, more like “floating”), watching my grandbaby.
What is your favorite restaurant? Home. There’s nothing like it!
Are you involved with any nonprofits? If so, which one(s) and why? I’m a founding member of GFWC Dominion Woman’s Club which
supports dozens of local non profits as needed. It’s a dynamic and diverse group of women who champion education, literacy and help families, children and elderly in our area! We meet monthly at Joe’s Restaurant on the third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. and all ladies are welcome.
What was your first job, or your most interesting job prior to your current profession? My first job as a teen was working part time at the Hayloft Dinner Theater. The money was terrible but the comp tickets/dinner every month were great! I love local theater and adore the Fauquier Community Theater. ❖
The Haymarket Gainesville Business Association was established in 1990 and is the premier association supporting business and community involvement in the Haymarket-Gainesville area. Two- and Four-Legged Friends of our Libraries BY KAITLYN SEASTEAD
F
ebruary is known for being the month of love and many of us here at Haymarket Gainesville Community Library have a strong love for our pets. Not just our branch, but all branches of the Prince William Public Library System are here to help you celebrate your love for animals big and small. We have so many physical and digital books and resources to help you find your dream pet, care for a pet, or even just to appreciate the pets of other people! If you have a library card, you have access to so many resources in our county. If you search for the word “pet” on our online catalog, you will get 1,882 results. Just think, if you start looking for other key words like “dog,” “cat,” or… well, let’s just say we have a huge number of books available about pets. These items can range from stories like Clifford the Big Red Dog by Norman Bridwell for our youngest readers, or a new, fun graphic novel series like Cassandra, Animal Psychic by Isabelle Bottier, or an Adult nonfiction title The Animal’s Companion: People & Their Pets, a 26,000-Year Love Story by Jacky Colliss Harvey. We have a collection of pet care titles for all ages as well as several books about animals that are perfect to help you find the type of pet that’s perfect for you and your family. If you’re

having trouble searching our catalog, please be sure to ask a library staff member. We are here to help you find what you are looking for and we would love to help you. Some of us may even have some personal experience with the kind of pet you are interested in and can give you some insight! Plus, we’ve got digital resources galore: • Use Gale PowerSearch on our Digital Library at pwcgov.org/library to research dog breeds and their histories. • Try NoveList Plus to search for book titles or recommended titles or anything you might not be able to find in your local branch. • Scholastic GO! and Kids InfoBits are designed for young patrons and can help them find out more about the types of animals they can keep as pets and even hear what sounds they make.

Check out Lynda.com to learn how to fix the odd effect on your pet’s eyes in photographs, or hit Creativebug and discover how to knit a custom-fit sweater for your dog. But one of my favorite ways to celebrate pets is to attend any of the monthly Reading to Dogs programs that can be found at your local branch. Bull Run, Chinn Park, Dale City, Haymarket Gainesville, Nokesville, and Potomac are all branches that will be hosting loving, adorable therapy dogs for your little ones to read to throughout the month of February (and the months that follow). Make sure to check on pwcgov.org/library to find the dates and times that work for you. Here at Haymarket Gainesville, we love seeing our elementary schoolers reading while petting even the largest of our system’s volunteer therapy dogs, and look forward to sharing many pet-based programs and story times with you at all our branches in the coming year! ❖

DESIGN 101:
Purrs, Paws, Fur, and Claws
“How can I “pet-proof” my home? What can I do to update a wallpaper border?” Interior designers deal with these and many other questions every day. This month’s column focuses on ways we can get along better with our furry friends.

WE LOVE OUR PETS, BUT DON'T LOVE THEM IN OUR BED. WHAT’S THE BEST SOLUTION? Humans and pets alike need a clean, safe, comfortable space where they can sleep and providing a stylish one is a great way to go. There are a number of chic pet beds on the market as well as reupholstering/ slipcovering a less stylish existing one. Some of the nice ones look like mini versions of high-end furniture, but there is really no end to "luxury pet bed" options. A helpful way to transition a pet to a new bed begins with moving their blanket, toys, or other items that carry their smell to the new bed. Don't use a used bed. Even if you can't smell the prior inhabitant they can. PRO TIP
WE ARE BUILDING A NEW HOUSE. IS THERE ANYTHING WE SHOULD CONSIDER HAVING PUT IN FOR OUR DOGS? Who likes waiting in line for the bathroom? You are probably making sure there are enough for the family, but what about putting one in for the dogs? It may sound silly, but dedicated pet washing stations are

a very real upgrade to a home. Containing dirt, clay, and other pet messes near an entrance like a mudroom is a real timesaver on cleanup. Even though it might not have the same ROI as an additional full bath, consider the qualitative value an upgrade like this adds. Quality of life is the cornerstone of luxury. PRO TIP
I HAVE A SMALL DOG WHO IS AGING. I WORRY ABOUT HIM FALLING OFF THE BED AND GETTING IN IS AN ISSUE TOO. WHAT CAN I DO? The best solution we have found is to have a ramp with a gentle incline placed along one side of the bed. There are several companies who market bed stairs for dogs, but we find that smaller dogs, especially arthritic ones can't handle the stairs. If your bed is low enough a foam wedge may suffice as well if sufficiently dense. Just as with humans, when our balance begins to suffer a rail at the side of the ramp is a big help to keep us safe from falling off. PRO TIP
We recently helped another local client with this same issue. Unfortunately there was not going to be a good solution to the problem behavior. Rather than fighting a losing battle to keep the venetians we opted to replace them with solar roller shades. Without the thin slats to stick a head or paw through, and with a hem bar at the bottom, the easiest path for the offender is to go under/around rather than through. We suggest you do the same. For those really insistent and destructive pets it might be worth replacing your standard wooden window sills with granite. PRO TIP
WHAT’S SOMETHING I SHOULD CONSIDER ADDING TO MY HOME THAT WOULD BE GOOD FOR MY PET? As a rescue cat owner we have been planning on adding a "cat-walk" to our home. For those unfamiliar with the concept imagine a high shelf almost like a protruding crown molding for our felines to perch and race around on. Ours will be made of black walnut and chamfered. They may be sure footed, but they can still slip. Make sure there is adequate traction as well as sufficient width to any surface your pets may thread on. And of course clean regularly with the hose attachment on your vacuum. PRO TIP

What does it take to raise a seeing eye dog? LOVE, AND THE ABILITY TO LET GO BY FRANNIE BARNES
H
ave you ever wondered how seeing eye dogs are trained? Surely there must be a strict taskmaster who trains dogs to resist every tasty smell and every lap they long to jump into. But in reality, there are organizations like Guiding Eyes for the Blind, which breeds dogs with the express purpose of being seeing eye dogs and pairs them with families who love them, train them, and let them go. The Johnsons are just such a family. Residents of Haymarket, they have years of experience working with Guiding Eyes for the Blind – they’ve loved, fostered, and trained four dogs for the organization. Parents Jeremy and Erika, a veterinary technician at Caring Hands Animal Hospital in Bristow, along with their three boys Cameron, Gavin, and Mason, are true animal lovers. After losing their dog several years ago, Erika and Jeremy were considering their new pet options when they contemplated fostering and training service dogs. They had several friends who’d been successful doing so and, while they were looking to give of their own time, they also felt it was an opportunity to teach their boys to look outside of themselves and give to someone else. Guiding Eyes for the Blind is a non-profit organization that provides trained dogs to those who are blind or visually impaired. The New York-based group has been working with dogs since 1954 and is known

for providing well-mannered, “exceptional” dogs who are paired with those “seeking increased freedom and independence, so that together, they can experience all kinds of life adventures.” Erika contacted Guiding Eyes for the Blind and found the process to be remarkably easy. The Johnsons attended a few pre-placement classes and waited to be paired with the right pup. Typically, puppies are placed with their foster families at about eight weeks old and stay with the family until they are 14-18 months old. According to the Guiding Eyes for the Blind website, the cost to breed, raise, train, match a guide dog to a recipient, and support the team throughout the lifetime of a dog is $50,000.

That’s a lot of money and what makes it all even more impressive is that Guiding Eyes for the Blind has created more than 170 guide dog teams during the course of its existence. As for the recipient of one of these dogs? They pay nothing. And the only things families like the Johnson’s pay for are food and toys. Time is the main commitment when raising a seeing eye dog. The dog needs to be someone’s shadow for the months they are in a raiser’s home. The pups take weekly classes until six months of age, and then twice a month from six months on. When a puppy earns its training vest, usually around four or five months old, they begin public introduction. The dogs get to go grocery shopping, out to

eat, visit museums, attend sporting events, and even go shopping! The whole point is to expose them to different sights, sounds, and “under footings” at a young age. “Our kids loved when the puppies would come to their school concerts or sporting events. Everyone loves a puppy!” Erika said. (In New York, raisers are able to bring their puppies to work with them so the dogs learn to settle while their raiser works, but as you can imagine, that would have been a challenge with Erika working at Caring Hands!)
The Johnson’s Dogs In total, the Johnson’s have raised four guide dogs: Baldwin, Sarge, Fergus, and Paco. “Every single dog we have welcomed into our home has taught us much more than we taught them. We’ve learned patience, perseverance, unconditional love and dependability” Erika said. Baldwin was their first puppy. “We are incredibly proud that Baldwin is a guide dog for a man named Tom in Ohio,” Erika shared. Sarge, their second dog is a guide for Omar, a gentleman in New York who is a survivor of the 9/11 attacks. Paco, their fourth dog, recently went to the Guiding Eyes for the Blind headquarters. The Johnsons have been told he’s doing really well in his training and is scheduled to graduate in April. Cameron, the Johnson’s oldest son, raised Paco. Paco slept in Cameron’s room and

Cameron took him to every training class. “Cameron trained him from beginning to end, and those two have a very special bond,” Erika said. Said Cameron, “I wanted to raise a dog on my own because I saw how big a difference a guide dog could make in someone’s life. Even though I knew it would hurt to give him back, knowing I had a part in making him successful gives my life more purpose and makes me feel good. I miss him, especially how playful he was, but I know he is doing big things.” While the end result of raising a seeing eye dog is fulfilling, it is also heartbreaking. Erika recalled how difficult it was bringing
and he could become more independent. The Johnson's realized they had a part in that. And it was that feeling of pride that has enabled them to go back and do it again three more times. “Every time we’ve taken a dog back, it has been hard. These dogs work their way into your heart and you absolutely have to love them to help them be successful. It’s a bit like sending your kid off to college; you do everything you can to prepare them and only they can take the next step. You just hope

The family beamed while watching him ace his first training test, but when they left him, they all cried on the way home. It wasn’t until they returned for his graduation ceremony and heard Tom, the man from Ohio with whom Baldwin was paired, talk about all the ways Baldwin would change his life did the Johnson’s feel the full effect of the good they’d done for someone else. you did enough,” Erika said. The goodbyes are the hardest part, but the Johnson’s all agree that they would do it again (and again). If you’re wondering about Fergus, well, somewhere along the line Fergus realized he didn’t want to be a guide dog, and was released from the Guiding Eyes program. Some might consider that a failure, but if you ask his family what they think, Erika, Jeremy, Cameron, Gavin, Mason, and kitty Gulliver would tell you that for them, it’s a happy ending. ❖

For the Love of a Louisiana Rescue

ainesville couple Pam and David Hanbury are no strangers to welcoming strangers into their homes – four-legged strangers, that is. Collectively, the couple has been rescuing and fostering pets since 1992 when Pam adopted a tabby cat, Sophie, from her local vet while living in Kansas. In 1995, a sweet cat she named Raindrop came into her life. “Raindrop adopted me during a rainstorm. She sat on my porch meowing and I couldn’t turn my back. My family welcomed her into our home, looked at the rain, looked at her, and named her Raindrop,” Pam said. Anyone who has rescued or fostered an animal understands what Pam means – animals rescue, or adopt you – not the other way around. Sophie/Raindrop was the first in many adoptions. In 1998 came a gentle puppy named Baby, a lab/pit mix from the Fairfax County Animal Shelter who the Hanbury’s say helped raise their family dog Chancellor and lived to be almost 16. Then came Parker, a retriever mix who came to them all the way from Louisiana in 2015,

followed by Jagger, a chocolate lab, (also from Louisiana) in 2018. Theodore, a golden mix, joined the family from the House of Hope in Maryland last year. To say that adopting pets from animal shelters and rescues has been a big part of the Hanbury’s lives would be an understatement. It has transformed their lives. They have forged close friendships with those they’ve met through fostering, volunteered countless hours of their time to different rescue and foster organizations, and now created their own non-profit called Parker’s Pals, with the goal to provide material comfort to foster pups awaiting their forever homes. In its infancy, Parker’s Pals has provided over 120 care packages to over 30 approved foster homes and rescues that include items such as crates, food, collars, leashes, toys, and bowls. By providing these items, it allows rescues to use their funds to pull and vet more pups out of high kill shelters and inspire more animal lovers to welcome dogs into their homes. The non-profit was indeed named after Parker, the dog they had the shortest amount of time with, but who left an indelible mark on their hearts. When they met Parker, he was estimated to be 5 or 6 and heartworm positive, but they fell in love with him and made him a part of the family understanding his health issues. Parker loved to go on long walks with David and the Hanbury’s other dogs and was always at David’s side. Sadly, Parker passed away suddenly while swimming last summer and the Hanbury’s realized they wanted to find a way to keep his gentle soul giving to others the way he had to them. Pam had plenty of experience volunteering with rescues. In 2010, she started as a transporter, then as an occasional foster, and eventually an adoption coordinator. She has also helped start a rescue from the ground up. “Currently I’m busy with Parker’s Pals, but I still volunteer some time to House of Hope. Rescues simply don’t have enough volunteers, so I help where and when I can,” she said. When Parker was being fostered in Louisiana, the Hanbury’s sent him care packages. He loved his blankie, stuffed animals, and treats, so each care package from Parker’s Pals has at a minimum a handtied blankie, a stuffed animal, and treats. “From my years in rescue, I also know how physically and emotionally draining fostering can be so sending care packages also is meant to provide a lift to foster

parents. We want them to know that someone cares about them and what they are doing. Foster parents really are the ones who save these shelter pups. They are the lifeblood of a rescue,” said Pam. In addition to providing these sweet care packages, through its website and Facebook page, Parker’s Pals highlights a foster parent every Friday to show and encourage others to try fostering. With so many rescues out there and dogs in kill shelters, it’s their mission to spread the word and help find them homes and help in any way they can along the way. With the Hanbury’s experience working with rescues for so long, they had a strong network of rescues and shelters which helped get Parker’s Pals off the ground and to a running start. Each rescue has their own network, which has also helped spread the word even further. And the care packages have been so well received
that Parker’s name continues to be one that makes others feel good. “When we read the comments from those who have received a package, seeing their joy has helped in healing our hearts,” Pam added. Currently Parker’s Pals is partnered with rescues and shelters in Louisiana, Mississippi, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina, North Carolina, Michigan, Texas, and New Jersey. Going back to the numbers – over 120 care packages to over 30 approved fosters and rescues is quite astounding considering the fact that Parker’s Pals went live just last September. Any pet lover would agree that with determination, a mission, and the love of a good dog, you can accomplish amazing things. Parker’s Pals is always looking for partners, volunteers, and donations, and can be found on Facebook at @parkerspals.org and online at ParkersPals.org. ❖

SPRAY PAINTING a reimagined life
STORY AND PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK
T
he last two-and-a-half of Devin Hutcheson’s teen years were stuff that dreams.. and nightmares... are made of. But now, after completing treatment for t-cell lymphoblastic leukemia, the 19-year-old is focused on living with a happy state of mind, a renewed spirit, and a life outlook beyond his years. The first year of treatment was grueling. Hutcheson spent five
26

months in the hospital, lost 40-pounds and all of his hair - twice - and had eight feeding tubes. Multiple rounds of high dose steroids have caused necrosis of the bone tissue in his knees, hips, and elbows, preventing participation in sports, hiking, or biking. Hutcheson fills the void by driving into the sunset down windy back roads, all the while working towards what he calls his “ideal life” of making a living as a full-time artist while traveling across the county park-hopping in a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon… an orange one specifically. But also, he wants to give back to other kids going through medical crisis, specifically teens who he feels often get overlooked. Hutcheson says that during his hospital stays, many charities visited and came around to the rooms to help support the kids in the unit. But when they got to him, there wasn’t much they could offer; they didn’t have anything for kids in his age group. “Coloring books and fidget spinners just didn’t do it for me anymore,” he explains. His future plans include filling in this gap to help other teens undergoing treatment. The contrast between life now and during treatment echo Hutcheson’s aesthetic. “Straight clean lines please the mind but splashes of color spark imagination. Abstract textures fuel the flame that clean lines leave an absence of,” he explains. Hutcheson’s art is mixed-media, using acrylic and spray paint. At first glance, the eye is drawn to the bold graphic shape with clean, colorful lines but a study of the background reveals the abstract graffiti that contracts the boldness with subtlety. A middle child born in Massachusetts before becoming a Virginia resident in 2005 and a resident of Haymarket since 2011, this Battlefield High School graduate has always felt his talents included an eye for color and design. The year 2016 found him foraying into art, inspired by artist Alec Monopoly and his use of graffiti in his painting. Hutcheson says he simply grabbed a canvas and some spray paint to see what would happen. He then began following other artists and fell more and more in love with graffiti art and how he could put his personal spin on it. “I love and am currently inspired by the art of Alec
Monopoly, Captain Casual, Alexander Mijares, Kaws, and many more,” he says of these artists who create contemporary, vibrant, colorful works. But when cancer treatment began to consume his life, art went on hold while Hutcheson concentrated on the battle. He barely painted at all the first year but his spirit began to revive during year two, with him really “ramping it up” towards 2019. Since May, his ability to paint has been the most consistent. When asked if his painting allowed him to process his cancer battle, his answer was no; the two often butted heads. However, the farther the end of treatment fades behind him, the more he is able to see it for what it was and how much of a turn his path has taken. “It has helped my mindset to realize there isn’t time to be sad or mad. We have one life and it could be over any second so we need to enjoy it,” says Hutcheson. This life philosophy is Hutcheson’s signature; in the art world, he is known as Devin HSM, which stands for Happy State of Mind. While on a plane ride during a Make-a-Wish trip to Australia, Hutcheson glimpsed a rainbow and his thoughts turned to his late grandfather, someone he adored. He began to feel an urge for change, and the HSM phrase popped into his mind. He knew this was it; his identity and his focus were clear.
“it has helped my mindset to realize there isn’t time to be sad or mad. we have one life and it could be over any second so we need to enjoy it” “HSM represents the happiness people always wish to find on this journey we call life. It represents how nobody wants to be sad and that happiness isn’t just one destination but it’s more about a journey. HSM fuses these two journeys that we work towards until death,” says Hutcheson. But this wonderful trip to Australia did so much more for Hutcheson. For one, it fulfilled his lifelong dream of holding a koala. Secondly, the trip served as a super inspirational experience; Devin HSM went on a creating spree when he got home, making over 70 digital works in just about 45 days. MICHELLE M. HOPKINS Life today finds Hutcheson painting in his basement ATTORNEY AT LAW studio or hanging with his family which includes older brother Andrew, younger brother Jack and his dog Sassy. Winesight is 20/20 BY MARK LUNA
I
n case you missed it, I took January off… sometimes, your palate just needs a rest. Per my annual habit, I shape my pursuits for the New Year around the experiences I both enjoyed and failed to encounter in the previous year. Certainly, that’s the case in my wine life. My missive for 2019 was to try new wines and I certainly did. I hope you did the same, including some of the wines I wrote about. Last September, I wrote a column that featured the heroic viticulture area of Ribeira Sacra, Spain, highlighting a wine trip that I took early last summer. In reflecting back, that was undoubtedly the pinnacle of my wine year, inspiring me to take another wine trip in 2020, perhaps to an up and coming wine region in this country, or to an ancient area in the old world, and experience more greatness to share with you. To kick off this first wine column for 2020, I return to Spain, my trip and share with you a couple of wines that I’ve been enjoying recently. And to celebrate the New Year’s number itself, it’s apropos that they can be found for $20. About 170km northwest of Madrid, in the autonomous community of Castile y León, sits the ancient town of Rueda. Known in the wine world as Rueda DO (Denominación de Origen), it is home to a white wine grape called verdejo. One of only a few noble Spanish white varieties, verdejo was in danger of extinction by the early 1970s, due
28

to pervasive planting and poor farming. It was part of the bulk wine reputation that plagued Rueda for many years. That would change, however, with Angel Rodríguez and his 17th-century vineyard, Martínsancho. Considered to be the greatest farmer in the region, Rodríguez' single-handedly was responsible for the preservation of Rueda's verdejo grape. Cuttings from the ancient Martínsancho site were used in 1976 to establish a new 25-acre vineyard, planted in the traditional head-pruned fashion and dry-farmed, meaning no irrigation. This allowed for low-yields of thick-skinned verdejo grapes, highly concentrated, capable of producing extraordinary wines. An absolute high point of the trip, I had the privilege of walking through the majuelo (plot) of Martínsancho. Less than an acre

of 100 year old gnarled vines, the alluvial soil is pure gravel, 30 feet in depth, purely organic. This tiny piece of land, preserved in isolation as both a virtual museum of pre-phylloxera farming and a continuing source of undisputed varietal authenticity, it’s treasured by nurseries throughout Europe. For his untiring efforts in restoring verdejo's prominence in its region of origin, Rodriguez was officially honored by King Juan Carlos, a few years before his passing several years ago. As for the wine, Martínsancho Verdejo 2016 speaks for itself. Light yellow in color, its mineral-rich aromas are complemented with lemon and green apples, with herbal and floral qualities adding to its complexity. It’s smooth upon entry, tightens in the middle, and then releases towards a strong and long finish. Less than 2,500 cases were produced and again, at only $20, is a great white wine to start 2020. To the red(s) we go… While Garnacha is the most widelyplanted red wine varietal in Spain, tempranillo is the grape of fame, with its home being in two regions actually, Rioja and Ribera del Duero. Vastly different topographies and wines of very distinct characteristics separate the two, yet tempranillo shine brightly in both…I was lucky to experience that first hand.
As noted in the Classical Wines of Spain website, The Montaña family traces its heritage to the origins of the modern Rioja wine industry in the late 19th century. Román Montaña consolidated the family business in 1920 as the viticultural component of one of Rioja’s grand old marques, situated in medieval cellars underneath Haro, the capital of Rioja Alta. The Montaña family retains portions of these impressive cellars to this day. Román’s grandson Oscar Montaña currently directs a vineyard estate comprising over 270 acres of prime sites in the Rioja Alta and Alavesa districts. I was honored to meet Oscar Montaña,
as well as his esteemed winemaker Isaac Fernandez Montaña, no relation. Isaac is a first-rate, independent producer, responsible for several wines in both Rioja and Ribera del Duero. For Oscar and his eponymous family label, he produces both the widely-acclaimed Crianza and the prestigious Rioja Reserva. Montaña Rioja Reserva 2014 is an exceptional wine. Comprised of 90% Tempranillo, 7% Graciano and 3% Mazuelo (Carignan), it is aged for 18 months in both French and American oak barriques. A higher percentage of the wine comes from Rioja Alavesa, the smallest of the three subregions (Alta and Baja); this provides more body, weight and dark red fruit character to the nose and finish. Vine age averages 50-60 years, giving the wine great aging potential beyond its current 2014 vintage. This is a balanced and beautiful wine, another $20 greatly spent. So, here’s to a fantastic 2020 to us all. And may our wine days ahead be as memorable as the ones we say goodbye to… Until next time, Happy Vino’ing! ❖

What Do You Need to Start Seeds Indoors? ...Hope, Faith and Patience BY STELLA VERADUCCIA
If you’re like some people, the winter months seem dreary and endless, and spring cannot arrive soon enough. One antidote for the winter blahs is to get an early jump on your spring garden by starting seeds indoors.

What You’ll Need There are several different ways to start seeds: the pellet method, the peat-pot method and, for lack of a better term, the paper-towel method. Your supplies depend on which method you choose. In all cases you’ll need quality
seeds, markers to label them (wooden popsicle sticks from craft stores work well), a spray bottle with a misting nozzle, containers, warmth, and light. Oh, and equal parts of hope, faith, and patience. All of your materials must be squeaky-clean — not quite medical-grade sterile, but almost. If you are repurposing household objects as containers or reusing old potting materials, they must be thoroughly washed. Use warm, soapy water mixed with bleach or disinfectant to kill any lingering lifeforms that may contaminate your seedlings, and dry completely before use.

Pellet Magic If you choose the pellet method, you’ll need a supply of peat pellets (also called Jiffy pellets) and a clean container to put them in. These pellets are small round discs that look like checkers, made of compressed dry peat moss in a very fine netting, which magically triple in height when rehydrated. For the container, clean plastic or styro egg cartons are a perfect fit for the rehydrated pellets, as are small yogurt containers or paper cups. To begin, spread the pellets out in a single layer in a shallow bowl or baking dish and slowly add warm water just to cover the top of the discs. As the water is absorbed, the pellets will grow and swell a little; if all the water is gone, you may need to add more to get the pellets to full size, about two inches tall. Here’s where patience comes in – it can take up to 60 minutes to fully rehydrate the pellets. While you’re waiting, you can prepare the containers. Remove the lid of the egg carton, use a large nail to poke a few small holes in the bottom of each compartment, then slide the lid under the
32
{ FEBRUARY 2020 |
carton as a drainage tray. If using paper cups or other individual containers, be sure to allow for drainage. Once the pellets are fully rehydrated, place one in each compartment, spread the netting a bit at the top, and use a nail to make a small hole for the seed, following the seed packet directions regarding depth. Place a seed in the hole, cover lightly with loose peat, and add a few drops of water. Add your seed-marker stick, tell the seeds you believe in them, cover, and move the tray to a warm spot to start the germination process (more on that below).
Practical Peat Pots Peat pots are molded flower pots made of compressed peat moss, sometimes mixed with wood pulp, which look like cardboard but are biodegradable and can be planted right in the ground. (A cowpot is a similar product but made of processed cow manure.) If you choose this method, you will also need a commercial seed-starting mix, which is a light, loose soil-less planting medium specially designed for seeds (not potting soil or garden soil, please, which are too heavy and will smother your seeds). Peat pots come
HAYMARKET LIFESTYLE
}
in various sizes and shapes – individual rounds or squares, or a multi-part “flat” with small individual compartments that can be separated before planting. Fill the pots with seed-starting mix, place them in a drainage tray, and mist the top liberally with water from your spray bottle. Using a nail or pencil eraser, make a few holes or narrow rows in the top, following the seed packet directions regarding depth and spacing. Place the seeds in the openings, cover lightly with mix, and mist well; plant a few more seeds than you want or need, as you will thin them out after they germinate. Insert your seedmarker sticks, tell the seeds you hope they’ll be happy, cover, and move them to the warming spot (again, below).
The Quicker Starter-Upper If you are not naturally gifted with large amounts of hope, faith or patience, the paper-towel method is for you. In addition to clean paper towels, you will also need clean zip-lock baggies, a pen to label your seeds, a tray, and the willingness to transplant your seedlings once they have germinated. To begin, fold a clean paper towel in half, open it and mist one side liberally. Place your seeds on the wet half, either scattered randomly or in a row, but with enough space between them to be able to lift them out later. Fold the dry half to cover them, mist well, insert it into a baggie which you have already labeled, and seal. Each baggie should contain only one type of seed, as different plants have different germination
rates; place the baggies in the tray and move to the warming spot, where they should sprout both leaves and roots in just a matter of days. You should then remove the most robust ones gently with tweezers and plant them either in a rehydrated pellet or peat pot filled with starting mix. Regardless of which method you choose, all seeds require warmth to germinate, then light later to grow and, of course, moisture. Place your pellets, pots, or baggies in a large disposable baking pan with a fitted plastic lid – a makeshift greenhouse – and put it in a warm spot: the top of the refrigerator or radiator works well, as does a sunny window. Check daily for moisture and mist liberally if they are drying up. Once they have sprouted leaves, remove the cover, water and fertilize lightly; place them in a cooler spot that gets at least six hours of bright light a day. Rotate them periodically so that they don’t get leggy, and use a fluorescent grow light if you don’t have a southfacing window. When the seedlings have sprouted true leaves (the second set after germination), the pots or pellets can be planted in larger pots to continue growing indoors into small, full plants. A few weeks before planting them outdoors, they need to be “hardened off” by spending a few hours in the shade outside on warm, dry days. Winter is here. You could give in and hibernate, or you could perform a supreme act of hope, faith, and patience by starting your garden seeds indoors. ❖

The Business Women’s Giving Circle of the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia has awarded grants totaling just over $69,000 to five area non-profit organizations serving local students. The grants include support for The House Inc., which will use the funding to provide financial and business-analytics programs to middle and high school students in Prince William County. The funding, representing the sixth annual grant cycle, supports organizations that provide STEM [science, technology, engineering, math] support to girls and young women in the local area, and brings to more than $300,000 the total grants disbursed by the organization. “Our grantees can reach girls spanning critical ages and stretching across Northern Virginia,” said Amy Kay, who co-chairs the grants committee with Tessie Wilson. “Their work continues to inspire our dynamic members as we execute our strategic initiatives to empower girls and young women – and, in turn, help enhance thriving communities.” “With women still underrepresented in most STEM professions, our focus is to give more girls opportunities to grow their confidence in these subjects,” added Tanya La Force, who chairs the Business Women’s Giving Circle.

Haymarket resident Ann Wheeler sworn in as board chair
New Prince William Board of County Supervisors Chair Ann Wheeler was sworn in Jan. 6. The Democrat will be a leading voice on county policies over the next four years. Among those tasks, she’ll be playing an active role in regional transportation efforts as a member of the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority. Since 2002, the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority has been tasked with long-term regional planning. Since 2013, the authority has allocated $1.9 billion for 122 regional projects. Wheeler said transit options are among the most important issues to residents in the county and the region, particularly as so many of them head outside of the county to offices in other parts of Northern Virginia and in Washington. The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority has allocated $95 million toward Prince William’s Va. Route 28 project to either widen the road or build a bypass between Manassas and Centreville. Currently, the authority receives a portion of sales tax revenue paid in the region and is required.

summer camps & private schools With the weather still chilly and winter coats still hanging by the door, it may seem strange to start thinking about summer camps...but now is the time to plan. Experienced parents know that summer camps fill up fast and early. The benefits of summer camps for children are undeniable. They expose children to a variety of people, places, and activities which help them gain independence and learn lifelong skills. Camps can also get kids unplugged and physically active, as well as providing a break for parents during the long days of school vacation. This is also the time of year that parents may contemplate making a change in their children’s education, perhaps changing schools. If you’re thinking of investigating a private school education for the fall, now is the time to start. That’s why we created this special advertising section for private schools and summer camps to get you started in planning both your child’s summer fun and their education for next year.
