’m a big believer in the power of gratitude and with this issue I have many who need to know how grateful I am for them. To all the parents who took the time to respond to our surveys, thank you. Your tales of the perils and positives of homeschooling renewed our respect for teachers, for parents for whom homeschooling is the preferred choice, and for you. You deserve a round of applause. To all of you who shared stories and photos of your Class of 2020 graduate, thank you. We so wanted to celebrate them and could not have done so without your input. We loved reading about their passions and future pursuits and wish them all the best. To the healthcare professionals and realtors who gave us the lowdown on how they’re navigating the new normal, and thus how they’re helping you - their patients and clients - do so too, thank you. Please don’t miss either of those features; they’re a wealth of information. And last but far from least, I must thank the advertisers that grace these pages. Thanks to them, we are a Haymarket and Gainesville combo issue (but not a Haymarket, Gainesville, Warrenton combo issue)! Thank you so very much for supporting Lifestyle and enabling us to continue serving our local communities. Until next month please, stay safe, stay healthy, and if you’re like me, stay home!

(With thanks to all those who responded to our survey!)

O

ur high school and college graduates missed out on walking across the stage to receive their diplomas, the myriad awards ceremonies that accompany graduation season, and the parties that ensue after the cap toss. (And of course they missed the cap toss, too.) At Lifestyle, we know a lot of these young people and couldn’t stand the thought of having them graduate without a little fanfare. And while the graduates featured here are certainly not all of those in Haymarket and Gainesville, we wish every single solitary member of the Class of 2020 the best of luck in all their future endeavors.

“It turns out the best way to respect homeschool families is to be forced to become one.”

Dear Teachers, We love you, we miss you, and most of us NEVER want to do your job again. Love, Parents

W

ith more parents working from home and taking on the additional role of teacher than ever before, family life for a lot of folks has gotten a little stressful. Of course there are parents, particularly those who regularly homeschool their children, who are relishing this time with their kids. But just who’s doing the relishing, who’s stressed, and what are some of the things parents are learning about themselves and their pupils? Lifestyle wanted to know, so we asked, and dozens of you responded. Thank you! We received responses from all over the area, from parents with children ranging in age from preschool to seniors in high school, and from parents whose children attend public schools, private schools, and those who already homeschool. What we learned was enlightening, thought provoking, and so detailed we couldn’t fit it all in the print version of this article. We did, however, manage to fit it all into the online version, so please don’t miss that. To all who participated, our sincere thanks. We learned a lot from your responses and were blown away by your resilience.

How do you feel about taking over your child's education? Confident? Frustrated? A little overwhelmed but I'm managing. HEATHER,

HAYMARK ET

We are not even attempting to take over our childrdens’ education. The teachers are still very active and we are just the support system put into place. NICOLE, GAINESV ILLE Since they are in high school, they don’t need much help staying on track because their teachers send them weekly emails detailing what is due. I am frustrated that they made the fourth quarter optional though. I feel the kids who have the resources could be doing more. K ATHLEEN, HAYMARKET Very confident! I already homeschool my kids and love knowing that they are secure in a new concept before moving on. When a child doesn't understand something and is forced to move on to a harder concept, they become frustrated and even begin to hate the subject. TIFFANY, HAYMARKET

How much time do you spend on education every day? Do you think this is a more or less efficient way for children to learn than traditional schooling?

Do your children like homeschooling, or would they rather be back in the traditional school setting? My kids would be thrilled to go back to school tomorrow! K ATHLEEN,

HAYMARK ET

They are missing school. But I think the idea of a staggered schedule is very appealing to them both. NICOLE, GAINESV ILLE I definitely think my son would rather be in school. HEATHER,

HAYMARKET

“Homeschooling is just standing behind your kid checking their math on your phone calculator.”

I feel like it's maybe more efficient but for us definitely more haphazard and not as thorough. H E AT H E R, H AY MA R KE T

On a given day, the kids are working between 1-4 hours. In some ways, they definitely can focus better on projects. We all prefer the traditional classroom with online support. N I CO L E, GAI N E SVI L L E

4-6 hours. I feel sorry for this quarantine learning. It’s difficult for the kids, parents, and teachers. It’s not true homeschooling. TI F FAN Y, H AY MAR KE T

How has this changed your perception of teachers and the traditional classroom school setting? Teachers and educators at home or in the traditional school sense are amazing! I highly respect them and all they do for our children. I would not want my children to continue full time virtual learning. K ATHLEEN, HAYMARKET My perception? They needed raises before and they sure as heck need them now! I personally received an email at 12:10 am one day and another day, when our email wasn’t working, a teacher called the house to speak with myself and my child. Above and beyond. They want to help. They want to keep the learning going. When you have educators who love teaching, empowering and developing young adults, the current situation is not ideal. My heart goes out to them. NICOLE, GAINESV ILLE

Has this experience made you think of continuing to homeschool after the schools open again? Yes, I have considered it, but my husband is not in favor of us homeschooling. I'm a stay at home mom but I don't feel like I have the discipline to thoroughly school them at the moment. HEATHER, HAYMARK ET My children would not want to be homeschooled. They love the social aspect of school and the opportunities that exist for them. K AT HL E E N, HAYM A R KE T My kids love being homeschooled. When their school work is done by noon and their chores by two o’clock, they're free to play and be children who can explore the world around them. TIFFANY, HAYMARK ET NO THANK YOU! I know it works for some. But it’s not for us. I wouldn’t mind a staggered schedule with online support but that’s it. Our kids enjoy the social aspect and classroom learning. NICOLE, GAINESV ILLE ❖

ue to the COVID-19 pandemic, our lives have been turned upside down in many ways. Things that were part of regular life have become either difficult or impossible. Even access to doctors, dentists, and hospitals has been limited or avoided due to safety concerns. Now restrictions are loosening up a little, so we asked our medical community how the pandemic has affected their practices and what the immediate future holds for their patients. The good news is most providers are open and welcoming patients. Doctors tell us that office visits are safe, and fear of contracting COVID-19 should not discourage anyone from visiting their provider for any reason, including routine check ups and vaccinations.

PHYSICIANS

Can you comment on the importance of scheduling well visits, physicals, and vaccinations which may have been neglected during the quarantine? Even with the COVID pandemic going on, it is still important to keep up with routine yearly check-ups and chronic disease follow up visits as well as vaccinations. There are many people who are not going to the doctor because they are concerned about getting an illness, but then they neglect their general health which also causes significant problems. DR. JULIAN HOANG, DO, LIFETIME FAMILY MEDICINE

Initially there was great reluctance to come to the office. But we’ve implemented health and sanitization protocols, and we know physician offices are safe now. It’s time to get caught up with routine office visits, routine lab work, and checkups. STEVEN VON ELTEN, M.D., PIEDMONT FAMILY PRACTICE

All elective surgeries were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and we are not yet performing them as we have not yet seen a 14-day decline in local COVID-19 cases as required in Governor Northam’s guidelines for resuming elective procedures. However, as of May 11, we have resumed medically necessary, time-sensitive procedures that were initially paused in midMarch. Imaging, labs and other appointments to support these procedures have also resumed. WHAT KIND OF PRECAUTIONS ARE YOU TAKING TO KEEP PATIENTS SAFE?

We have added heightened safety measures such as temperature screenings for everyone entering our facilities, universal masking, enhanced cleaning processes, and increased resources to infection prevention teams. Every patient having a medically necessary, time-sensitive procedure undergoes pre admission testing, which includes testing for Coronavirus. In addition, to ensure physical distancing and address clinical safety concerns, we’ve lowered the number of patients in clinics at one time and reduced the use of waiting rooms. We require all patients come to their appointments with a mask

or face covering. Patients who arrive without a mask are provided one upon entering our facilities. ARE YOU PRIORITIZING ANY PARTICULAR TYPE OF ELECTIVE SURGERIES AND IF SO, WHICH ONES?

Our priority right now is on medically necessary, time-sensitive procedures. We’re prioritizing rescheduling patients who have had appointments and procedures postponed since March. Each case goes through a review and scoring process by a panel of physicians in order to ensure that our facilities have the resources available to handle these cases along with any potential rise in COVID-19 cases in the community. HOW ARE YOU HANDLING OUTPATIENT/INPATIENT VISITORS?

Visitation for hospital patients has been restricted, except for laboring mothers and patients who are minors (under age 18). We request that patients come alone to office appointments unless necessary (e.g., patients who are minors or who have ambulatory issues). If visitors are required and cannot wait in the car: only one visitor may accompany each patient; visitors must be healthy (no cough, fever or flu-like symptoms); visitors must be 13 or older, unless they are seeking medical care; visitors are asked to wait in the exam room with the patient.

We certainly saw a drop in people coming in for well visits and physicals initially. There’s a significant concern that we’re going to witness a reemergence of vaccine preventable illnesses such as measles and whooping cough. The worst thing possible would be the reemergence of other illnesses because we let our guard down to focus on something new. We have to maintain those well visits for those vaccination preventable illnesses. JOSHUA JAKUM, M.D., PIEDMONT PEDIATRICS

Are you seeing people neglecting health issues due to COVID-19? There are many people who are not going to the doctor because they are concerned about getting an illness, but then they neglect their general health which also causes significant problems. By keeping up with routine office visits, we ensure that at least some of those problems are caught before they reach a dangerous point. DR. JULIAN HOANG, DO, LIFETIME FAMILY MEDICINE

Absolutely. There are reports of people with chest pain staying home, which can be very dangerous. There are concerns that there will be cancers that will have a delayed diagnosis because we’re neglecting routine checkups. It’s time to get over the fear of going to the doctor or the hospital. STEVEN VON ELTEN, M.D., PIEDMONT FAMILY PRACTICE

We certainly saw a drop in people coming in for well visits and physicals initially. That has thankfully changed as our staff has reached out to families to encourage them to come in. JOSHUA JAKUM, M.D., PIEDMONT PEDIATRICS

Can you comment on sports physicals? Should they be scheduled soon? This is actually a prime time to get sports physicals done since most parents don't have to worry about schedules. When things start opening up again and people go back to work, there will be a rush to get them done before school begins. However, patients who have missed their routine checkups will also want to come in, so there will be limited slots. This could cause issues with the students being able to participate in sports activities when the time comes. DR. JULIAN HOANG, DO, LIFETIME FAMILY MEDICINE

“Tele-medicine has been skyrocketing in our practice, and has been particularly useful in mental health visits. It helps ensure that we’re reaching out to all patients who need help.”

Here, anybody who’s potentially sick with COVID-19 is sent downstairs where they’re screened outside in their cars. All our offices have put in good workflows to help protect their patients, so we want people to come back in again.

JOSHUA JAKUM, M.D.PIEDMONT PEDIATRICS

STEVEN VON ELTEN, M.D., PIEDMONT FAMILY PRACTICE

What types of appointments are you prioritizing? I would not say we are particularly prioritizing certain types of appointments since we are still doing different types of visits from sick visits to routine follow-ups, but due to COVID concerns, we are seeing a lot more sick visits. We can do the majority of these sick visits via telemedicine which helps ensure we’re keeping ourselves and our patients safe. DR. JULIAN HOANG, DO, LIFETIME FAMILY MEDICINE

We are seeing everyone who wants to come in. We have been doing some tele-health, but it’s not nearly as good as examining a patient in person. STEVEN VON ELTEN, M.D., PIEDMONT FAMILY PRACTICE

Going back to my earlier point of not allowing a drop in immunization rates in our community, that’s our priority. I’m not downplaying the effects of COVID-19, but you can’t take your eye off the other things out there that we can control or prevent. JOSHUA JAKUM, M.D., PIEDMONT PEDIATRICS

How do you handle social distancing in the waiting room and treatment rooms? Because we have many telemedicine visits, we have fewer in-office visits. This leaves space for the patients that are being seen to keep distance from each other. Our staff members are also required to wear masks when interacting with patients. In patient rooms, we tend to stay on the opposite side of the room until it’s time for the physical

HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

exam, and we are wearing gloves during our exams as well. This helps keep close contact to a minimum during patient encounters. DR. JULIAN HOANG, DO, LIFETIME FAMILY MEDICINE

We actually have closed down our waiting rooms, all visits are text to room. When families arrive, they call and we check them in remotely. Then we recommend only one family member accompany each child, and we see children one at a time. We call them when the room is ready, the nurse meets them at the door and brings them back to a cleaned and sanitized room. We have been very cognizant of cleaning the rooms according to the CDC recommendations. We social distance at scales, and all our staff is masked at all times. JOSHUA JAKUM, M.D., PIEDMONT PEDIATRICS

Have you had an increased need for mental health appointments? Yes. There are many reasons for peoples' mental health to decline. Many without mental health issues are now suddenly burdened by finances, work, and even just cabin fever. Many with prior mental health issues are finding themselves having a harder time coping with the additional burden of staying indoors and not having their normal routine in place. DR. JULIAN HOANG, DO, LIFETIME FAMILY MEDICINE

Teens and graduates have missed out on incredible experiences for closure to their high school career; things like prom and graduation. They really can have this sense of loss, so giving them encouragement and telling them that their lives are about to open up to amazing things is important. Tele-medicine has been skyrocketing in our practice, and has been particularly useful in mental health visits. It helps ensure that we’re reaching out to all patients who need help. Are you prioritizing any particular type of visits and if so, which ones? Appointment priority in our office is initially addressing those patients with active periodontal disease and other active diseases such as large cavities, teeth that require extraction or teeth that require root canals for infection. Next, patients who missed their periodontal maintenance hygiene appointments to help control disease, and those with treatment started but unable to complete due to COVID-19 guidance and recommendations. Those patients with underlying medical conditions are being prioritized as well since the pathogens in the mouth can impact overall health and vulnerability.

GENERAL DENTISTRY AND ORTHODONTICS

What kind of appointments were delayed due to the pandemic and how are you moving forward with them now? All appointments were delayed initially, and gradually moved to emergency treatment only. Our office remained opened to provide needed treatment to patients in pain with broken teeth or crowns, infection, or trauma to the mouth. On May 1, the dental community was given the authorization to move forward with all treatment types.

order to provide care in a warm, friendly, and safe environment. We have also taken extra measures including: installation of air purifiers which kill up 99.6% of viruses throughout the office and treatment suites; integration of aerosol reducing isolation systems; instituting new first time patient screening measures; and instituting a streamlined check-in and check-out process. In addition to our current personal protective equipment (PPE), our clinical team is equipped with knee-length or full body gowns, surgical hair caps, full face shields, and ASTM level 3 masks or higher (N95 or KN95). VIRTUAL SHOWINGS. FACETIME HOUSE TOURS. AND BUYERS BUYING HOMES SIGHT UNSEEN.

Realtors embrace the new normal Imagine buying a home based solely on a virtual showing and a FaceTime tour your realtor took you on. And by “took you on,” I mean you’re on your laptop having coffee while your realtor walks the property you’re interested in, sharing its pluses and minuses, via FaceTime. That’s just one of the innovative ways realtors are embracing the new normal and helping people buy and sell homes safely. What else are they doing? How do they feel the real estate market will fare in the months ahead? How are clients responding to certain new safety precautions including not being permitted to tour a house in-person if it’s not vacant and they have an underlying health condition? We asked five local area agents these and other questions. Read on for their answers!

Lifestyle Magazine (LM): How has the real estate business changed during the pandemic?

PATTY TOMAN (PT): Although the market seemed to momentarily hit 'pause' when the pandemic became apparent, it is now a very busy market. Listings are seeing multiple offers, buyers are seeing more competition.

22

{ JUNE 2020 |

MIKE CROSBY (MC):

Although some consumers have taken a conservative approach and put their real estate matters on hold, the market in Northern Virginia has not been affected. Homes are still selling quickly and for top dollar, and in many cases there are bidding wars with escalation addendums and the waiving of inspections.

PATTI BROWN (PB):

There are fewer buyers out looking as well as fewer sellers who are actively listing their homes. And we're all having to use cautionary measures that we never needed to use in the past.

HAYMARKET/GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE

}

DAWN ARRUDA (DA):

When the stay-at-home order was issued, it was very quiet and slow for the first two weeks but as soon as word of reopening spread, the phones started ringing and contracts started getting written. I ratified five in one week. With interest rates so low and pent up demand and low inventory in this area, business is brisk.

LESLEY SALMAN (LS):

More buyers are looking online, more virtual online tours, virtual open houses, sellers are making buyers prove that they’re approved to be looking in that price range prior to touring a house and of course, safety precautions such as face masks and gloves. Buyers are attending fewer home inspections and other inspections and letting the professionals handle them.

LM: What types of new strategies and tools have you implemented? PT: Presidential Realty is utilizing

recommended 'safe showings' protocol with face masks and gloves for all, as well as virtual tours and virtual showings as appropriate. In addition, our realtors have always provided enhanced up-front information to help buyers determine if a viewing would be called for, and in these times that high level of research is even more critical. For our sellers, we remain committed to providing the safest environment while their homes are on the market. Our open houses are highly regulated, and provide a high level of comfort to sellers and buyers alike.

MC: Virtual tours have become

a bit more common in the marketplace, but providing shoe covers, gloves, masks and hand sanitizer are additional amenities our listing agents offer prospective buyers to provide a level of comfort and peace-of-mind.

PB: I have added a "walking video" to all of my listings so buyers can get an effective "feel" of the house and property. It's a highly effective way of giving the buyer a sense of the floor plan and flow, just as they would walking through the house in person. DA: We do walk-through videos

on all our properties and we’ve always used FaceTime for whoever couldn’t see a property in person. I am finding that the virtual open houses do not work well. Your audience has to be captured via Facebook or Zoom in order to generate the kind of urgency that gets people to schedule a time to see a property.

LS: Virtual tours, showings, open

houses and more advertising online. I also held two real estate livestream panel discussions to discuss the state of the market on my show, Going Gainesville.

LM: How are those new tools working for your clients and your business? PT: Extremely well. MC: So far all these implementations have worked out very well.

PB: Very effectively! DA: It’s hugely helpful with potential clients. LS: There is a lot less driving around and more efficient use of time. The clients do not seem to mind.

LM: When you go with clients to see a property, what kind of safety precautions do you take? PT: Face masks and gloves, social distancing, realtor taking the lead and opening doors, turning on lights, etc.

MC: I take clients to view properties and

coordinate with the sellers to ensure everyone is aware as to when and who will be entering the home, and that our agents and clients are implementing all the necessary safety requirements possible. Gloves, shoe covers, masks and hand sanitizer.

PB: When I take buyers to see a property, we

wear masks, gloves and shoe covers. We maintain a safe distance from each other as well and try to be very respectful of the seller's home.

DA: Masks, gloves and booties to protect all parties is essential. Also, we ask that no children come on appointments and, if you have a health condition, you must wear a mask and maybe even skip in person showings if the house is not vacant. LS: We try to touch the least amount of things

possible, and of course we wear masks and gloves.

LM: How do you see this impacting the real estate business in the long term? PT: While a 'new normal' is

emerging, many of these safety practices are likely to remain and provide a safer environment for all, ongoing. All said, I'm confident our market will quickly find it's balance, and we'll continue to keep our clients educated as to new practices and standards to ensure the most successful outcomes.

MC: I feel that once this passes we

will experience a surge of sales as there will be pent up demand. Prices will climb and bidding wars will intensify. Although some consumers have experienced job losses or reduction in pay, I believe that the current administration will take the necessary precautions to protect those and not allow the banks to foreclose and create an alternative to protect their families.

PB: It's difficult to know. One day at a time!

DA: In this business you have to change and adapt often, and you have to understand the current state of the market, be it a health crisis, an economic crisis, or a housing crisis. I think that the agents who conform to the new normal will do very well. LS: I think we will see a lot more people willing to buy homes sight unseen or narrowing things down online and only visiting their top one or two choices. ❖

o prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus across the United States, millions of Americans started practicing social distancing in early March. People turned to their computers and smartphones to buy groceries, order carry-out meals and, yes, complete medical appointments. For at-risk populations, virtual care was a lifesaver for connecting with medical experts without leaving the home and endangering their health. It also served as a great option for otherwise-healthy, low-risk individuals who didn’t need emergency or urgent care but wanted to get a prescription refill or be evaluated by a provider. “Hospitals and doctors’ offices needed a way to safely treat patients during stayat-home orders,” said Gary DeRosa, MD, physician executive, Novant Health UVA Health System Medical Group. “It’s a true

testament to how far medicine has come. We’re lucky to have the technology to be able to see patients virtually to help keep them — and ourselves — safe.” Access to virtual care has been critical during the fight against coronavirus. It’s kept people home, safe and away from providers’ offices. But as the world heals from COVID19’s impact, DeRosa predicts that a lot of patients will continue to use these services. “During this period of social distancing, e-visits and video conferences are increasingly practical,” said DeRosa. “Virtual care is convenient; it saves time and resources and it allows patients to connect with their care provider without having to go into the office. All of these are significant benefits for both patients and providers.” That’s right — providers, hospitals and medical facilities reap the benefits of virtual care, too. Providers can triage patients with

critical illnesses and injuries and address e-visit questionnaires more efficiently. “Of course, surgeries, lab work, certain treatments and diagnostic services still need to be done in person with a face-to-face visit. And people with medical emergencies should visit the emergency room,” DeRosa said. “However, virtual care is a safe, convenient way to obtain minor diagnoses, complete assessments, fill prescriptions and seek professional advice.” Options for Virtual Care Novant Health UVA Health System offers virtual care in two forms: e-visits and scheduled video visits. Both can be accessed through MyChart personal health portals. Patients with existing accounts simply log in to start or schedule their virtual visit. Virtual care is also an option for new patients. New patients can register themselves for MyChart or request access by calling one of Novant Health UVA Health System’s primary care offices. DeRosa shared what you should know about each option for receiving virtual care: • E-Visits — using a smartphone, tablet or computer, patients are asked to input their medical history and describe their symptoms in an electronic questionnaire. A provider then receives this information and offers a diagnosis and recommendation for treatment or next steps and can prescribe medication if necessary. Patients usually receive feedback within one business day. • Scheduled Video Visits — patients with minor illnesses or injuries can video conference with providers via smartphone, tablet or computer. Much like an in-person office visit, this route requires an appointment, but typically only takes about 15-20 minutes. After observing any physical symptoms and discussing patients’ concerns, providers can offer diagnoses, make recommendations for treatment or next steps and write prescriptions as needed. While virtual care has been a key resource throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, DeRosa expects to see continued use of these vital virtual care services. “Virtual care allows us at Novant Health UVA Health System to stand by our mission to bring the best of health to our patients and the community,” DeRosa added. “We look forward to seeing how it expands access to healthcare for a broader community in the future.” ❖

DESIGN 101:

Your home is your... office? BY YARON LINETT

WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN?

The times they are a changin’. As we contemplate the best way to adapt our business to the new realities of working from home, many of us question what’s the best way to set up our office. This month we answer some of your pressing WFH questions.

The first step in any project is always to consider your needs. What functions do you have to perform? From there we select the forms that allow you to fulfil that function. Do you need a computer, fax, and/or shredder? Do you need seating for clients? How many people might be in your office at one time, and what will they need when they are there? Ideally each of those questions will be answered in a”branded” manner consistent with your businesses values. PRO TIP

Overwhelmed? You don’t have to go it alone. In our most self-serving pro-tip ever, you can always hire a pro.

{ JUNE 2020 |

This is a very big consideration, and we are well aware that people have very strong feelings on the topic. Personally we like warm lights with a high “CRI” (color rendering index). 2700K is good; however for some applications a significant shift all the way to 5000K is more appropriate. The best practice is to establish multiple overlapping zones of lighting — general, task, and accent — consistent with the specific needs of your industry.

I HATE SEEING CORDS RUNNING ACROSS THE FLOOR. IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO ABOUT THEM?

Make sure to consider the sources of light in the room when determining the location from which you will be videoconferencing. A strong backlight is very detrimental to the visual quality of a video call.

Aside from using cordless items, yes. Cords can be run across, up, down, or through. Across is generally accomplished using cord management solutions such as cable or “zip” ties. Up to an overhead powersource is not just for lights, many commercial spaces utilize this solution. Down is similar to up, locating an outlet in the floor is a great solution that often is the best for hiding wires. Through can be achieved with grommets installed in desks or ports installed in walls.

MY HOME OFFICE IS SO NOISY, WILL HANGING CURTAINS HELP MUFFLE THE SOUND?

Once again, as we have PRO cautioned many times before, TIP always have a licensed and insured electrician complete any work. Potentially saving a few dollars is never worth the risk and liability.

WHAT TEMPERATURE LIGHT BULB SHOULD I USE?

PRO TIP

Alas, no. While technically the treatments will absorb some quantity of sound, the amount is not significant. Drapes make poor acoustical baffles. Applying a second layer of drywall or covering the walls and floors with cork is a better alternative. Sound is carried through the air. Your room is not airtight, so it will not be soundproof. The areas behind outlets, vents, and under doors let in more sound, but your top culprit is normally windows. ❖ PRO TIP

A “Virtually” Unforgettable Summer at the Library BY KRISTEN BURNHAM

T

his was it. Summer 2020 was to be my very first summer overseeing Prince William Public Library’s annual Summer Reading Program, a national literacy program that, as any public librarian will tell you, is THE event of the year. I was excited, nervous, and every other emotion in between as we drew closer to June, mentally counting down the minutes until the program was launched. Everything was set: The programs had been scheduled, paperwork finalized, prizes purchased… and then the country shut down. Almost immediately, I was faced with a slew of questions, all of them adding up to: What about Summer Reading? How could we move forward when libraries are closed, and we have no idea when we will reopen? Suddenly all the plans that had been carefully made were now seemingly impossible to carry through, and we were facing a whole new reality for the summer, with new challenges and a whole different set of rules. But work them out we did, and I am very happy to be able to tell you that, thanks to a lot of brainstorming and amazing teamwork, we are having a virtual Summer Reading program this year. Not only that, we are having a busy virtual Summer Reading program.

28

{ JUNE 2020 |

Imagine Your Story

This year’s Summer Reading theme is “Imagine Your Story,” and in light of the current circumstances, I couldn’t think of a better theme. As always, the program runs for nine weeks, this year from June 15 through August 15. Participants, ages 0 to 99, can sign up through the library website pwcgov.org/library, or by downloading the Beanstack Tracker mobile app. Once signed up, participants:

• Will have access to a virtual game card of activities that can be completed at home. • Upon completing 10 activities, kids and teens win a free book, which they can pick up when the libraries reopen to the public, plus an entry into the grand prize drawing. • Complete all 25 activities and receive a bonus entry into the grand prize drawing, which doubles a participant’s chance to win a littleBits set for kids ages 0 through grade 5 or a Target gift card for teens in grades 6 – 12.

But wait, there’s more!

Even though our libraries are closed, we are still hosting amazing programs this summer. Mike Rose Magic, Puppetopia, Bar C Ranch, Fools Improv Comedy Troupe—these are just a few of the programs that the entire family can enjoy, all at home! Whether you want to challenge yourself with a special virtual painting class, take a Zumba or dance class, or be introduced to a llama while sitting on your couch, we have something for everyone. Check out the Virtual Programs section on our website, which has all our current virtual program information as well as those programs coming up this summer. PWPLS is committed to providing our community with the best customer service possible, and I see it every day in all the hard work our staff is doing to ensure that this summer has quality programs and services for you. And, just as I was just a few short months ago, I’m counting down the minutes until we can share it with you! ❖

After a 44-year tenure, it’s Chief Barnard’s time to retire

If Walts gets his way, PW grads will get in-person graduations

Prince William County Police Chief Barry Barnard will retire from the police department July 1. Barnard has served as the fourth police chief since 2016 and joined the department in 1976. During his 44-year tenure, he has held many positions of leadership within the ranks. In 2000, Barnard was named an assistant chief of police before he was appointed as the deputy chief in 2009. “Over the span of his exemplary storied career with the Prince William County Police Department, Chief Barnard has displayed the true meaning of civil service through his commitment to the rule of law while maintaining professionalism and diligence in serving the community with compassion," said Ann Wheeler, chair of the Board of County Supervisors. "On behalf of the Board of County Supervisors, I wish Chief Barry Barnard all the best in the coming years.” Barnard said it has been an honor and privilege to serve Prince William County. "My family and I are grateful for the opportunities and support that Prince William County has provided to us." he said. "I want to express my sincere appreciation to the staff of the Police Department for their friendship, dedication, and outstanding service to the community. I will miss them very much." Deputy Chief Jarad Phelps will serve as Acting Police Chief following Barnard’s retirement until a national search to fill the position has concluded.

Prince William County schools Superintendent Steve Walts has announced tentative plans for in-person high school graduation ceremonies delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The events will be Aug. 3-13 at the schools, and the specific dates will be decided and communicated in the next few weeks. Staff has been reaching out to high school seniors who may need assistance to graduate. He also said students will not be banned from participating in the ceremony due to debt owed to the school. In addition, tickets may be limited as public health precautions will be followed. “It is important to all of the high school principals that we celebrate this important milestone for our students,” said Katherine Meints, principal of Brentsville District High School. “We want our students to know that we are proud of them. We want to see their faces when they graduate, and it gives us a great opportunity to congratulate them, reflect on some great memories, create new memories, and wish them well.” Meints worked collaboratively with all PWCS high school principals to develop a plan to celebrate the students.

COUNTY CELEBRATES NEW WET LAB FACILITY AT INNOVATION PARK A new 30,000-square-foot wet lab facility is coming to Prince William County’s Innovation Park. Called the Northern Virginia Science Center, it will provide companies with Biosafety Level 2 standard laboratories, something that is generally too expensive for small and mid-size companies to build and maintain for themselves. The facility, the first of its kind in Northern Virginia, “will provide much-needed space to conduct groundbreaking research to address society's greatest challenges," said county board Chair Ann Wheeler. The building is expected to be completed in November. 2021.
