TIPS OF THE MONTH
ARE YOU READY FOR A NEW HOME? Selling your family home is hardly ever about building your financial portfolio. For most of us, it’s usually a matter of necessity. A growing young family or a changing lifestyle usually demands extra space. Maybe your kids are old enough now that they need separate rooms. If you have outgrown your living quarters — for whatever reason — it’s time to explore a move-up forever home. How can you tell that it’s time to move? Here are four common scenarios: 1. You’ve had a change in family size. Whether someone is moving in or you have a baby on the way, you naturally need more space for more people. If you’re struggling to achieve functionality with your current setup, then you need a home with additional rooms. 2. Your DIY and design projects don’t happen — or they cost too much. Maybe you bought your starter home intending to renovate it, but you underestimated how difficult it is to fix up a house. If your fixer-upper has become a money pit or a huge source of stress, it may be time to call it quits and seek greener pastures. 3. You find it difficult to entertain or have guests over. If you have too little space to host or have few boundaries between your party and private space, it’s hard to entertain comfortably. A larger home that allows more freedom and possibilities for hosting will better align with your needs. 4. You spend all your time in other parts of town. Imagine being closer to work and your favorite restaurants. Instead of wasting hours in your car, why not pick a home that’s close to everything you love? And if everyone else in the neighborhood is selling, it may be a sign that it’s the perfect time for you to do the same. Are you ready to find your next home? Get in touch to discuss your next steps!

Happy New Year, friends! As I put this issue together, I thought a lot about my parents. My dad is 90, my mom is 84. Both still live at home, surrounded by the things that bring them joy. Both are also still pretty active, so I know that if they lived here, they’d be eager to participate in the many classes, workshops and programs available for seniors in our community. I hope that if you’re an older adult – or if you love someone who is! – you’ll take a look at the terrific features on art, painting, and dance classes offered close to home, the incredible variety of book clubs, writing workshops, and tech support provided by the Prince William Public Library System, Donna Wood’s inspiring and informative piece on seniors finding joy in college classrooms, and the excellent advice our own Yaron Linett has to offer on thriving in place. I hope also that, if we’ve missed something you think is a terrific program or opportunity for older adults, you’ll write to me at susan@piedmontpub.com and let me know. Thank you for joining us as we kick off 2020. See you next month!

DESIGN 101:
Don’t Age in Place...Thrive BY YARON LINETT “How can I make my home safer? What can I do to update popcorn ceilings?” Interior designers deal with these and many other questions every day. This month’s column focuses on ways we can future-proof our homes.
local expert THE EXPERT:
Yaron Linett
HIS EXPERTISE:
Interior Design
Yaron Linett is the principal designer of Formal Traditional, a full-service design firm located in Warrenton. To submit your interior design questions, drop him a note at yaron@ formaltraditional. com or visit www. formaltraditional.com.
I AM WORRIED ABOUT MY PARENTS FALLING. WHAT CAN I DO TO MAKE THE HOUSE SAFER? Balance is an issue not only for the elderly, but also for any of us depending on the environment. It is extremely important to consider the slip coefficient of any surface, but doubly so in an area where water or grease are likely to be found. Your flooring provider should be able to ensure that you are making appropriate choices based on the location. PRO TIP
Even when the flooring is slip resistant, you still need to make sure transitions between flooring types do not cause a tripping hazard themselves.
WE ARE BUYING A NEW HOUSE AND A SINGLE STORY HOME IS NOT AN OPTION FOR US. WHAT SHOULD WE DO ABOUT THE STAIRS AS WE AGE? Assuming that an elevator is not an option, you may want to consider installing a stair lift. Just check to see if you have power at both the top and bottom of the stairs. Once you are ready for a lift have a professional install it, this is not a good project to DIY. PRO TIP
Even if you never end up needing a stair lift, having power at your stairs will come in handy. Just think about how much easier it will make installing an illuminated garland.
WHAT ARE SOME EASY AND RELATIVELY INEXPENSIVE THINGS I CAN DO TO “THRIVE IN PLACE”? Adequate lighting is relatively inexpensive and very easy to upgrade. We strongly recommend LED lightbulbs which produce far less heat and
10
{ JANUARY 2020 |

}
consume less energy. Bringing up the general light level and adding in task lighting will help, but make sure to avoid causing glare. Harsh light off reflective surfaces is a significantly greater problem for our eyes as we age. One thing we suggest is looking for high CRI (color rending index) bulbs. We use bulbs with a score of over 90 in all our projects. Everyone can appreciate colors that appear closer to how they look in daylight. PRO TIP
ARE THERE ANY OTHER CONSIDERATIONS WE SHOULD BE AWARE OF FOR AGING EYES? One of the last colors we are able to see is the same as one of the first. Red is typically a good color to use when you are working with infants or adults with age-related macular degeneration. PRO TIP
Contrast is the key, but don’t forget that there are a whole host of visual impairments.
You may think that your red stripe provides good contrast on the stair runner; however to a red/green colorblind individual it might be entirely invisible.
WHAT IS SOMETHING PEOPLE OFTEN OVERLOOK WHEN CONSIDERING SAFETY FEATURES? Many of us think of balance issues, or poor vision, but few consider the dangers of a diminished olfactory sense. As we age, many of us lose a good portion of our ability to distinguish between smells. A natural gas cover with a pilot light that went out nearly killed several of our own family members. You should consider getting a gas detector, aging or not. There are many hazards that you cannot smell even if you have perfect olfactory acuity. Neither carbonmonoxide or radon have an odor, play it safe install a detector. PRO TIP

income below $23,850 and are over age 60, you may be eligible to earn a degree through this program. However, even if your income is over $23,850, you can still audit a course for free - you just won’t be able to use the credit toward your degree. Of course, students are still required to cover their own fees for course materials or lab work, when applicable. Senior citizens can only take three courses at once, but there’s no limit to the number of semesters or academic years you can participate in the program. It’s also important to keep in mind that you must meet the admission qualifications for the institution of your choice, and you may only be accepted to an individual course after all tuitionpaying students have signed up. What is a Class Audit? One way that senior citizens with taxable income of over $23,850 can take advantage of waived tuition in Virginia is by signing up to audit a course. The difference is that auditing a class does not provide the student with credit toward a degree. For individuals over 60 who are still working part or full time, or are freelancing instead of following a traditional retirement path, this can be a great option. Auditing the class is, essentially, just enrolling and taking it like you traditionally would. You aren’t obligated to take courses that are in your specific industry (or the industry you were in before retirement if you’re retired at the time of enrollment). This is an ideal opportunity for you to explore your interests, learn a new skill, or take a course that inspires you.

How Can You Enroll in Virginia?
Senior Citizens in the College Classroom
Qualifying individuals over age 60 fall under the Senior Citizen Higher Education Act and can apply to enroll in continuing education courses at the institution of their choice. Every college or university has a slightly different application process, so it may be helpful to contact the admissions or enrollment department at the college you’d like to attend. They’ll be able to give you more information about how to apply, what courses are available, and whether a class you’re interested in is currently full.

etirement can often be a challenging time. Putting financial concerns aside, the transition from working full time and being committed to consistent goals to having no defined structure to your day-to-day can be tough to make. One way that some retirees, and senior citizens who are still employed full time, are finding purpose, fulfillment, and joy in this new season of life is by attending college or continuing education courses through a waived tuition program at a local college or university. Who is Eligible for the Waived Tuition Program in the State of Virginia? As of 2019, the state of Virginia allows senior citizens to enroll in courses for free if their taxable income doesn’t exceed $23,850. If you have an

There are so many reasons you might be inspired to go back to school as a senior. Many American adults have, at one time or another, considered the idea. However, the cost is often prohibitive, and there may not be enough time between growing your career, raising kids, and spending time with friends and family. Going back to school as a senior helps you to sidestep a lot of these problems that may have prevented you from continuing your education in the past. You may have more disposable income now that you’ve paid down debt and adequately saved for retirement. You may also have more free time on your hands as you run your successful business, or enjoy the benefits of being higher up in your organization. Whether you’re currently retired, reducing your working hours, or still working full time and loving it - waived tuition in Virginia is an exciting, cost-effective way to expand your horizons, continue your education, and enroll in courses about subjects you’re passionate about. ❖

Why We Care: Providing Personalized In-Home Senior Care BY STACY SHAW
W
hen you walk into the Caring Senior Services office in Gainesville you see a bed with a colorful hand-made quilt. The quilt was on the hospital bed that belonged to the mother of Wayne Mitchell, owner of the small local business. “I keep that quilt out there to remind us why we opened the business. We all have to care for a loved one as they age, and I want to remind everyone that the person they are caring for is not just another person; they are special to someone,” Wayne said. Wayne envisioned a care service that would put seniors and their families first while being a resource for various other senior services. He could not find that level of personalized attention to care for his parents as they aged and needed assistance around their home. He thought: “There has to be a better way.” He assembled a team of caring, qualified individuals and opened Caring Senior Service to serve seniors throughout most of Northern Virginia. Caring Senior Services of Northern Virginia is an in-home senior care service provider who helps keep seniors healthy, happy and at home longer. Assisting seniors with personal care, meal preparation, medication reminders, light housekeeping, companionship, transportation to doctor’s appointments, and errand services right from the comfort of their home. Elder care is a necessity particularly when family far away. “Today’s families are spread out over the country, and they always worry about how their loved one is doing,” Wayne said. Caring Senior Service accounts for that. They are the only senior care agency in Northern Virginia that uses an electronic records program called TENDIO. They place a tablet in the senior’s home which the caregivers use to follow the personalized plan developed by a dedicated registered nurse. Caregivers enter detailed information about the senior’s day that family members can review on a secured family portal. “It’s a different level of communication and professionalism,” said Wayne. Erin Combs, home care consultant and registered nurse, loves

working directly with clients. “I really get to know the families, and you do feel like you’re making a difference in their lives,” she says. People have busy lives, families and careers. It is a relief to get outside assistance. Erin believes that the assistance of Caring Senior Service allows people to enjoy spending time with their senior family members by being their child, spouse, or friend; not the caregiver. And assistance goes beyond physical care, a client’s family member whose mom has dementia said, “Caring Senior Service is like having an emotional support group, I don’t feel like I’m on an island doing it myself.” The care team consists of over 100 caregivers, coordinated by care managers who supervise the unique GreatCare® method Caring Senior Services has developed. This method focuses on hiring quality caregivers, providing the right care solutions, and maintaining active involvement with clients, their families, and their health care professionals. Angie, who is part of the care manager team, was a hospital technician for 23 years before joining Caring Senior Services. She routinely meets with clients and families and gets to know them. “The wives will joke that the husbands are my boyfriends,” she says. Katrina, a care manager with more than four years of senior care experience, has been a caregiver herself. She shares, “I can say that the most rewarding position I held has been a care manager; working with seniors to help them have greater independence in their own homes is very satisfying”. “Our team of true, caring, compassionate people make a difference,” said Wayne. Caring Senior Services is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Health and is fully insured. It was voted “The Best Senior Services” for 2019 by the readers of this magazine, and voted “The Best In-Home Senior Care Agency” in Prince William County two years in a row by the readers of InsideNova. GOING GAINESVILLE goes to
TRANSFORM POWER YOGA BY LESLEY SALMAN
W
Going Gainesville host, Lesley Salman, Kristin Ballard, owner of Aktivate Podcast, Erin Sedgley, yoga instructor, and Liba Spyros, owner, Transform Power Yoga, discuss the health benefits of doing yoga and the many styles of yoga taught at the studio.
e made it through the hustle and bustle of the holidays so now is the time to recenter ourselves for 2020. Transform Power Yoga, 2019 Best of Winner in the Best Yoga Studio Category, was where we knew we needed to go to get our zen on. I gave my beautiful friend, Kristin Ballard of Aktivate Podcast, a jingle to tag along as co-host and more importantly, give moral support as I fumbled my way through the yoga poses. Kristin and I sat with Liba Spyros, owner of Transform Power Yoga, and Erin Sedgley, one of the instructors, to find out why they were voted Best of! They informed us that the instructors really keep up on training and they do their best to make the studio and its classes safe and engaging. They are also very interactive with all of their clients to make it a personal experience. The yoga styles offered are heated vinyasa, gentle, restorative, and yin, and they also have a children's program. Their wonderful community program is truly unique in that it allows the teacher trainees to give back by teaching a class and choosing a charity to which participants’ fees are donated. Anyone who wants to start 2020 off the right way, is encouraged to check out Transform Power Yoga and start working on your overall well being now. To see our entire interview, head over to facebook. com/goinggainesvilleva, click on "videos" then scroll down and click on the Transform Power Yoga banner. Going Gainesville will be back next month to celebrate another of the Haymarket and Gainesville businesses you voted Best this year, so don't miss this space or our video spotlights on all of your local favorites on Facebook!

They don’t call her the baby whisperer for nothing... Meet newborn photographer, Leah Marsh BY FRANNIE BARNES | NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHS COURTESY LEAH MARSH
h, baby pictures. They capture a moment in time, a time that can be both a blur and when the clock seems to stand still. But as every parent knows, the days are long, but the years are short, and before you know it, your baby is taller than you and ready to drive. Newborn photography has come a long way from the traditional blue and pink bassinet hospital pictures. And nothing is cuter than a baby positioned just the right way, with the most adorable teeny, tiny props and adorable backdrops. Many new parents don’t know where to begin to capture a good picture of their precious package, but that’s why there are experts, like Leah Marsh, of Leah Marsh Photography. Leah Marsh can - and does - create art with the tiniest subject. Leah has a quiet sense of calm, which makes her a natural at what she does. Whether the subject is a newborn baby, or a child running around to get the wiggles out before a family photo shoot, Leah has an inherent ability to bring out the best and capture the essence of her subjects. It might surprise you that this baby whisperer hasn’t always worked with tots. She has an impressive military background as a member of the US Air Force, briefing high ranking officials on F-15 fighter jets and at times two-to-three thousand Air Force members for special exercises. She’s

lived all over the world which is what led her to fall in love with capturing memories and sceneries with her camera. Leah lives in Haymarket and is raising her three active children, Kylie, Hunter, and Bryce with her husband, Jason. They’re an active family involved in school and (many) sports activities. She grew up in Nashville, joined the Air Force as an air traffic controller, and lived in Texas, Alaska, and Las Vegas over the course of her military career. When she got out of the Air Force, she worked for a government agency and was relocated to Qatar. While living in Qatar, she was involved in an accident that shattered both wrists and required many surgeries, both overseas and in the US. It wasn’t the accident, though, that changed Leah’s career path. She continued to work as a government contractor until she had children. But she always loved the art of photography, her father having instilled in her the importance of having memories to look back on. “I had always been interested in photography, but my love for it really took off when the Air Force moved me to Alaska. adult learners benefit from
creative pursuits
BY ANALIESE KREUTZER
tudies have shown that arts education provides health and wellness benefits to older adults. According to the National Institute on Aging, engaging in dance, music, creative writing and other forms of art helps with cognitive function and memory and reduces stress. Participants also benefit from the increased social interaction, and they have higher self-esteem. If you would like to explore your creative side and reap the benefits, the following resources can help you find nearby classes in dance, art and music as well as writing groups.

center for the arts The Center for the Arts at the Candy Factory in Manassas offers art and dance classes to teens and adults in addition to a program for younger children. Art classes include drawing, watercolors, oil painting, photography and more. Dance classes are available for swing, ballroom, salsa and creative movement. The Center is also home to Rooftop Productions, a community theater group for adults. The art and dance class durations vary, but many are held once a week for four or five weeks. In addition to classes at the Old Hopkins Candy Factory, the Center holds some classes at Windy Knoll Farm in Nokesville and the Linton Hall School in Bristow. A catalog of courses is available on the Center’s website at WWW.CENTER-FOR-THE-ARTS.ORG.
At Center for the Arts in Manassas, dance classes are available for swing, ballroom, salsa and creative movement.
Prince William Public Library When it comes to learning about anything, public libraries are a great resource. For complete details on all the Prince William Public Library System has to offer older learners, please see Your Golden Years at the Library, also in this issue.
Senior Centers
Contemporary Music Center
Prince William County is home to two senior centers operated by the Area Agency on Aging. The centers are located in Manassas and Woodbridge, and they sponsor activities and classes specifically designed to enhance health and wellness and strengthen the minds of older adults. If you are interested in dancing, painting, photography, ceramics, crafts and more, Senior Center programs are open to those 55 and older and their spouses, regardless of age. The annual membership fee for county residents is $25, and most classes are free. For more information, visit WWW.PWCGOV.ORG/SENIORCENTERS.
Founded on the principle that everyone deserves the chance to learn a musical instrument, the Contemporary Music Center in Haymarket offers lessons for beginner, intermediate and advanced students. Individual lessons typically last 30 minutes, and the store has a variety of instruments available to rent or purchase. Contemporary Music Center instructors welcome students of any age. To learn more, go to WWW.CONTEMPORARYMUSICCENTER.COM.
Lifelong Learning Institute The mission of the Lifelong Learning Institute in Manassas is “to establish a community of adults, 50 years of age or older, that provides affordable, educational, and social opportunities in a friendly atmosphere.” LLI-Manassas’ schedule of events changes with each spring and fall semester, but recent classes included flower arranging and a creative writing workshop. LLI-Manassas is a membership-based organization that charges $125 per year in dues. For more information, go to HTTPS://LLI-MANASSAS.ORG/.
Muse Paint Bar If you want to explore your creativity in a less structured atmosphere while enjoying an evening with friends, head to Muse Paint Bar in Gainesville. Muse hosts painting sessions seven days a week and welcomes all ages. No prior experience is required, and sessions combine painting instruction with a restaurant and bar. Each class is 2 ½ hours and costs between $29 and $40. Most classes are held in the evening, but there are some afternoon classes on weekends. For more information or to register, visit WWW.MUSEPAINTBAR.COM.
Write by the Rails Write by the Rails (WbtR) is the Prince William Chapter of the Virginia Writers Club. The group works to nurture, cultivate and help the local writing community grow. Your Golden Years at the Library BY KELLEY SYARTO | PHOTOS COURTESY PRINCE WILLIAM PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEM
A
ccording to Census Bureau projections, by the year 2034, people 65 or older will outnumber kids 18 and under. This “graying of America” will have profound consequences for all segments of society as we struggle to meet the needs of an increasingly older population with fewer resources to draw upon. Here, libraries can help. Libraries across the country, including our own Prince William Public Library System (PWPLS), supports older patrons with services and programs designed to accommodate their varying needs and interests, assist them in their pursuit of lifelong learning, entertain them, and inform them.
So much to read (in large print, too!) and listen to: Our library print collection has all the latest best-sellers, as well as a large nonfiction collection covering subjects such as retirement planning, health and nutrition, cooking for special dietary requirements, caregiving, and mindfulness. As with most of your favorite authors, many of the nonfiction titles are available in large print. Speaking of large print, did you know that you can adjust the print size when reading e-books available to library patrons through Libby by OverDrive and hoopla digital? Other settings allow you to choose fonts that are more legible; increase the amount of space between letters, words, and lines of print; change the brightness and lighting; and align the text to maximize your reading comfort. If reading is difficult, why not listen? We have a large collection of audiobooks, as well as movies, television programs, and music, located at our libraries and through hoopla digital and Libby.
Digital options abound: On the Digital Library at pwcgov.org/library, we also have dozens of Premium Websites— such as Ancestry for Virginians, Consumer Reports, and Universal Class—available for you to pursue hobbies, conduct research, or learn something new.
Surf the library from your sofa: One of the biggest advantages of the PWPLS Digital Library is its remote access. Register online for a two-year Digital Library card and get access to most digital resources. This is a great new service for people who are not near a PWPLS library or who have mobility or transportation issues. So, you don’t have to come to the library… but we hope you will. Our libraries are warm, inviting spaces, with friendly staff who love to talk about books. We also offer programs to assist, inform, and entertain you. Do you need help getting hoopla digital or Libby on your device? We have staff who are happy to work with you to get you up and running with our Digital Library or to assist you with any other technology-related issues you might have. Just contact your library to set up an appointment.
Monthly series for older patrons: One-on-one tech help is available at the library simply by making an appointment.

“read and returns.” Take a book that interests you, and simply return it when you’re finished, no checkout necessary. Several of our libraries also visit area assisted living centers to bring books, facilitate book clubs, or give presentations to residents.
Programs that appeal to all adults: In addition to programs for older patrons, we also offer a wide variety of events, classes, performances, workshops, and presentations with appeal for all adult patrons, such as book clubs, writers’ groups, movie afternoons, as well as chair yoga. Simply check out our Explore Magazine for a full listing of programs and events at our libraries. You can also find the information online at pwcgov.org/library. Just click on the green “Events” icon.

The Prince William Public Library System would love to hear your thoughts on programs for older adults.
Tell us what programs or services you’d find meaningful: Finally, PWPLS formed a Services to Seniors Workgroup to explore the needs and interests of our older patrons and how we could expand our offerings to meet those needs. We would like to hear your ideas regarding programs and services for older adults in our community. Looking to the Future; Appleton Campbell
O
ne of Fauquier’s oldest family-run businesses is expanding in 2020. Since the mid 1970s, Appleton Campbell has served our community’s homeowners’ HVAC, plumbing, and electrical needs with quality and efficient customer service, operating out of a historic building in old town which was once the ice house and power plant for the town. Now in its fifth decade, the owners are relocating operations to a new facility to streamline efficiency and accommodate the needs of the company as it grows. Lifestyle sat down with Heather Appleton to talk about this new era for Appleton Campbell.
How long has Appleton Campbell been in business? Tell me about the beginnings. We began in January 1976, and we’ll be celebrating 44 years of serving Fauquier County and the surrounding areas this year. The company was started by Jim Appleton, the grandfather of our current president, Mike H. Appleton. He started the business with just one truck, and Mike started helping him. He was just 16 years old, so it was a great learning opportunity for him. Not only was he learning a trade, but he also learned a great deal about ethics and the value of hard work. Flash forward to today, and Michael J. Appleton is the fourth generation to run the company. Our vibrant management team will continue to build on the strong bones and ethics set about by Jim Appleton all those years ago. Scott Wayland, our current vice president, has also been a key player in the growth and family culture of the business for the past 25 years.
What services do you offer the community? Appleton Campbell offers plumbing, heating,

air conditioning and residential electrical service repairs and replacements. Since 2007, Appleton Campbell has been committed to serving homeowners exclusively, rather than working on new construction and building projects.
How has Appleton Campbell grown since the beginning? After starting with just one employee and working for many builders throughout the first 30 years, we now have about 90 local employees. We encourage our staff to participate in the surrounding communities, and we’ve narrowed our business focus to serving only homeowners. Our company’s growth philosophy is rooted in teamwork, and we strive to take care of our employees so they can take great care of our customers.
I understand you are opening a new facility to accommodate growth. Tell me about that. We are all very excited about the new facility. The new structure allows us to gain a bit of extra square footage, but we’ll have enough parking

for all of our employees and service vehicles. The town has been very gracious in allowing us to use the parking lot next to the dog park for our employee vehicles, but we’re glad to finally have enough parking to accommodate all of them without using a municipal lot.
Where will the facility be? How big will it be? The new office will be right next to Home Depot, off of Alwington Boulevard in Warrenton. It’s a little more square footage than our current office building once you include the warehouse we have rented for the past few years across town. The new space will allow us to operate both from a single building, rather than having them separated.
How will this enhance your business? Just having the new parking and the warehouse all under one roof will be a huge improvement. The new office will also have a larger training room, which is a great need for us. The office layout — and the extra garage doors for loading and stocking our vehicles — will improve our timeliness and efficiency,
allowing us to complete tasks more quickly. The new structure will give us the opportunity to grow and better serve Fauquier and eight surrounding counties (Culpeper, Madison, Orange, Rappahannock, Stafford, Loudoun, Prince William, and Fairfax) as we look ahead to the next 40 years of Appleton Campbell offering value and excellence to area residents. ❖
Clockwise from top left: The move in date for the new facility is on schedule for early spring 2020. Michael Appleton, Mike Appleton, Heather Appleton & Scott Wayland Scott, Michael and Mike at the June 2018 ground breaking

of our Manassas Office in July, 2018. I had spent the previous 20 years on the carrier side working with agencies like LIG. This was the right time and the right agency to make the change.
What is your favorite season in this area, and why? I love the changing seasons but if I had to pick one, it would be summer. I love the beach and fresh seafood.

agency representing many great companies, we do the shopping for you, to find the best coverage at the right price while providing exceptional service. We are your insurance advisor and advocate.
Golfing with my son, working out, and hanging out with friends.
What is your favorite restaurant? There are several great local restaurants and breweries we enjoy, but El Tio is where we meet our friends the most.
Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your current profession. They actually happen on an almost daily basis. It’s when a client sends us their current policies for review and we are able to find them better coverage and save them money.
Tell us about your experience with the HGBA. How has it supported you in your local business? HGBA is a group of local businesses that come together to network, share ideas, support each other, educate and give back to the community in multiple ways. I was so impressed with the organization that I became a member of the Board of Directors a couple of years ago to help continue its success.
What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals? Be honest. Care. Do it because it’s the right thing to do.
Are you from this area? If not, what brought you here and what do you like about our town? My job brought me and my family here from West Virginia in 2003. I like the fact that we basically have everything we need in the local area. While the population might be a lot,
Are you involved with any nonprofits? If so, which one(s) and why? I’m on the Board of Directors and am the Vice President of The Sweet Julia Grace Foundation. I’m a little biased because the foundation is in honor of my daughter, Julia Grace Knight, who passed away in 2013. She had the best smile, a precious heart, and showed us how to live with joy and love. Our foundation’s mission is to fill in the gaps, grant wishes, and meet non-medical needs for children who are seriously ill, have special needs, or are in a medical crisis. ❖

Hylton Performing Arts Center opens education and rehearsal wing Rick Davis, executive director of the Hylton Center, (with scissors), and Dr. David Wu, provost of George Mason, cut the ribbon officially opening the wing. The new Democratic majority elected to the Prince William Board of County Supervisors includes, from left, Supervisor Victor Angry, and supervisors-elect Andrea Bailey, Ann Wheeler, Margaret Franklin and Kenny Boddye. They’ll be sworn in Jan. 6.
New County Leaders in 2020
Prince William County will start 2020 with new leaders in elected office — many of them Democrats, leading to a political shift on the Board of County Supervisors. Haymarket resident Ann Wheeler was elected to be the board’s at-large chair, and will lead a 5-3 Democratic majority. The board will be sworn in Jan. 6. Winning re-election was supervisors Victor Angry, D-Neabsco; Pete Candland, R-Gainesville; and Jeanine Lawson, R-Brentsville. New faces on the board include Andrea Bailey, D-Potomac; Kenny Boddye D-Occoquan; Margaret Franklin, D-Woodbridge; and Yesli Vega, R-Coles.
The Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas officially opened its Education and Rehearsal Wing with a ribbon-cutting recently. The wing includes two rehearsal halls, six practice rooms, two classrooms, and two additional lobby spaces. Construction began in late 2016, but the project ran about a year behind schedule as fund-raising proved more difficult than expected. The wing cost about $13.5 million, with about $6 million coming from state funding and $7.5 million from private donations. “This wing makes the Hylton Center complete and transforms us from a place where great art happens to a place where great art is created,” said Rick Davis, executive director of the Hylton Center and dean of George Mason University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts. Bishop Lyle Dukes, chairman of the Prince William Chamber of Commerce, praised the expansion and the relationship between the Hylton and the local business community. “The chamber of commerce has benefited greatly from the Hylton Performing Arts Center being in our backyard,” Dukes said. “And we have been inspired by the way our chamber members have used the Hylton Center in their own businesses.”
Step Sisters provides support to patients fighting breast cancer Step Sisters, a nonprofit working to improve the lives of those impacted by breast cancer, recently formed a partnership with Novant Health UVA with locations at the Haymarket and Prince William medical centers. As Step Sisters has grown, the organization has worked to expand the breadth of services offered to breast cancer patients and today is able to fund transportation, food delivery, childcare, house cleaning, lawn services/snow removal, pet care, gift cards, chemotherapy care bags and a Crisis Fund. “Practical support services are essential in keeping women in treatment. We are proud to be able to now fund these services to patients in Prince William County,” say Ashley Campolattaro and Angela Fuentes, founders and Co-Executive Directors of Step Sisters.
