hen we’re thisclose to sending an issue of Lifestyle to the printer, I sit down and go through it one last time looking for dropped or misspelled words, incorrect punctuation, and the like. I don’t often find those things, but what I do find every time, is an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the people in our community. Their talents, generosity, and commitment to making our corner of the Universe a better place never ceases to amaze me. Take Michael Morgan, for instance. The Gainesville dad saw a need for a youth mentoring program in our area and, with the support of his wife, Tamika, founded A Few Good Men. AFGM mentors young men ages 8-21 and provides opportunities for them to interact with positive male role models. And then there’s Opera singer Angela Knight of Haymarket. If you’ve yet to hear her perform at the Kennedy Center, make time for her new opera, Queen of the People’s Hearts opening April 4 at the Hylton Performing Arts Center. Queen of the People’s Hearts, which Knight wrote and produced with her partner, Randal Dewey, is the singer’s love letter to Princess Diana. Clearly, we live in a community filled with incredible people. I hope you enjoy their stories and the other inspiring features in this issue. Cheers!

TIPS OF THE MONTH
CONSIDERING RETIREMENT? When you think of the home you’ll retire in, a new house may come to mind. Or maybe you’re contemplating moving to your favorite vacation spot or somewhere closer to friends and family. With so many choices, how will you know what’s best for your lifestyle? Here are three questions to consider before making a move for retirement: 1. Will you relocate? Maybe you have a favorite beach town in mind for your retirement, where you can relax year-round. If so, be sure to account for the price of moving and the costs of your new community. If the cost of living is higher, make sure you have enough money saved to live comfortably. 2. Should you downsize or upgrade? The kids have likely moved out, so you could opt for a smaller house or condo. But a more substantial property may offer additional space for visitors and hobbies. Think about what’s best for your family, then consider sitting down with a financial planner to evaluate your assets to be sure you can afford your options. 3. Is the timing right? If you’re not quite ready to retire but thinking about moving, it may be better to buy property while you still have a steady income. On the other hand, you can take your time looking if you start after you’ve left your job. Either way, explore your options to ensure you’re making the most of your investment and your retirement. Is retirement in your near future? Are you ready to start looking for a new home? Reach out today to discuss your next steps!
DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT! “Patty was very proactive in helping my parents during the entire home buying process that took about 8 months. She was very prompt and always available whenever we needed throughout the process, while giving us good advices and helping us to make informed decisions. She negotiated to a lower sales price and got the necessary repairs done on time by seller. She remained diligent and supportive until the final closing. I’d recommend her highly!” - W.C. “Patty Toman is the best person you can ask for as a realtor; she always makes me feel like I’m the only one client she has. She was always patient and had very good judgment on any situation, and led me into the right direction to selling my house within a few days.” - S.L

needs to helping women through high-risk pregnancies. It’s very rewarding.” COMMITMENT TO WOMEN’S OVERALL HEALTH
E
ach March we celebrate Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day to recognize the past and present contributions of women. In the medical community, we honor women through continued advancements in the field of obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN). “It is the only field of medicine that solely provides services to women,” said Jeffrey Bell, MD, an OB/GYN physician at Novant Health UVA Health System Haymarket Medical Center and Prince William Medical Center, as he explained the importance of women’s healthcare and how he’s seen the field improve in the nearly 30 years he’s been a provider in the area.
Dr. Bell noted that these improved practices aren’t only applicable to major surgeries, like hysterectomies, but also to more common procedures like biopsies and even nonsurgical services, like cervical cancer screenings. Many of today’s OB/GYN practitioners, including Dr. Bell and the team at Novant Health UVA Health System, perform a wide range of services, including: Annual visits and screenings including pap smears and mammograms OBSTETRICS AND PRENATAL CARE
As in most specialties of medicine, standard practices have changed over the last several decades in OB/GYN care. Advanced technology and new techniques have altered the way providers look at and address problems. “A few decades ago, a hysterectomy, for example, could have had a woman out of commission for a couple of months because the surgery was so involved and relatively complex,” said Dr. Bell. “Today, thanks to minimally invasive surgery practices and equipment that allows us to safely do procedures with smaller incisions, that recovery period is much shorter, and chances of complications are significantly lower.”
• Colposcopies — evaluating abnormal pap smears and biopsies by examining the cervix and vagina for signs of disease • Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedures (LEEP) — removing abnormal cells from the walls of the cervix • Biopsies — evaluating abnormal cells for signs of cancer or other disease • Evaluation and treatment of menopause, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, abnormal bleeding, pelvic support problems and other gynecological conditions • Infertility evaluations and counseling “I pursued OB/GYN because I was drawn to how diverse the scope of the work is,” said Dr. Bell. “We do everything from performing minor and major operative procedures to determining and advising on birth control options for a woman’s unique

Dr. Bell noted that OB/GYN providers get to treat women throughout all stages of their lives, from puberty to pregnancy to menopause. “That’s led to prolonged, lasting relationships that providers in other specialties don’t often get to have with their patients,” he added. By forming these patient relationships, OB/GYN providers are often able to offer a trusted voice in more areas than just reproductive health that encourage and support women’s overall health. “Although it is still important that women have a primary care provider for acute injuries, conditions and broader health concerns, many women think of their OB/ GYN doctor as someone they can turn to for advice and expertise on how conditions and habits can affect feminine health and overall health,” said Dr. Bell. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG): • Engaging in low-impact exercise while pregnant helps maintain physical fitness and enhance psychological well-being • Maintaining a balanced diet plays a role in feminine health, including menstruation and pregnancy • Eating or avoiding certain foods can impact fertility; ingesting proper nutrients is vital for nurturing children in the womb, and the overall health of the mother. “Diets, nutrition and exercise might not seem to be related to your reproductive health, but the human body is complex and its systems can affect each other,” said Dr. Bell. “We can expect to see even more enhanced knowledge and greater advancements in the OB/GYN field as modern medicine continues to improve.” ❖

WE CARE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT AND WANT TO PURCHASE GREEN FURNITURE. WHAT SHOULD WE LOOK FOR?
DESIGN 101:
it’s easy being
GREEN
This is a big topic. We can discuss sustainable materials, reducing packaging, environment impact, and so much more. The first thing we suggest is rather than buying new furniture look to repair or repurpose your existing furniture. After that, a responsibly sourced, long-lasting, quality piece is your next option. One good way to determine that is to ask the salesperson directly. If their answer is "I don't know, probably," or anything other than a full explanation of how their company prides itself on sustainable practices, it is likely not. Companies that are green almost always make it a big part of their presentation. One easy place to begin is to check the list of companies that are members of the Sustainable Furnishings Council. We’ve known them for years and trust their standards. PRO TIP
IS BAMBOO FLOORING GREEN? In general, bamboo is a commonly used material in green design. But, if it’s processed with volatile organic compounds, dyed with a toxic substance, packaged in excessive plastic, and replaced within a year, then no. Like everything, the details matter. Look for a high-quality product from a reputable manufacturer committed to environmental stewardship. Have it installed properly and enjoy it for years.

Interior Design
Yaron Linett is the principal designer of Formal Traditional, a full-service design firm located in Northern Virginia. To submit your interior design questions, drop him a note at yaron@formaltraditional. com or visit www. formaltraditional.com.
“What is Biophilic Design? How can I save money on custom cabinets?” Interior designers deal with these and many other questions every day. This month’s column focuses on ways we can “green up” our homes. BY YARON LINETT
WE LOVE THE COLOR GREEN, BUT OUR OUTDOOR FURNITURE KEEPS FADING. DO WE NEED A DIFFERENT COLOR? Green has been used for outdoor cushions and awnings for decades. What you need to look for is a fabric with a sufficient lightfastness rating. In order to be called an indoor/outdoor fabric, a rating of between 500-1500 hours of lightfastness is required. Some of the fabric we use, regardless of color, exceeds 3,000 hours. Just remember that most of the United States receives over 2,500 hours of sunlight in a single year. Nothing lasts forever. PRO TIP
10
{ MARCH 2020 |
The term indoor/outdoor doesn't mean you can leave it unprotected outside. Rain and other elements will degrade the fabric more quickly and destroy the cushion inserts as well.

One of the most frequent issues we see with bamboo floors is scratching and fading. We highly recommend avoiding topically applied dark colors, especially purple. PRO TIP
HOW CAN I DECORATE AND SAVE SOME GREEN? Step 1. Repurpose it. If you already own it then it costs nothing. Step 2. Redecorate it. A little paint can go a long way, and if you provide the labor the cost is about as low as you can go. Step 3. Purchase quality. Buy once cry once. One of the costliest mistakes we see are people trying to save a buck. The labor to install a poorly made cabinet is the same as installing a wellmade one, and buying an item two of three times over is not good for your bottom line. You can also save money by asking us your questions here and getting them answered for free… That's a Pro Tip if we've ever seen one. PRO TIP

TEST ANXIETY?
Libraries Can Help!
BY KELLEY SYARTO
T
esting season is right around the corner for children across Virginia as they get ready to take the dreaded Standards of Learning Tests, commonly referred to as the SOLs. And though the SOLs, and other standardized tests like it, are simply a way to measure student learning— rather than a measure of self-worth or future success—children, parents, and teachers all experience anxiety during the testing process. Unfortunately, test anxiety often doesn’t end with high school graduation. While many institutions of higher learning are dropping requirements for the SAT or ACT, most colleges and universities still determine admission based on these tests’ scores. Likewise, acceptance into graduate programs is often conditioned on tests such as the GRE, GMAT, MCAT, and LSAT. And many occupations require tests for licensure or certification, such as the PRAXIS for teachers, the 473 Postal Exam, real estate licensing exams, and the ASVAB for U.S. Army soldiers. PREP, PREP, PREP! So, how to get over test anxiety? The first, and most important, step is preparation. And this is where we can help! Prince William Public Libraries have test preparation materials in the physical collection as well as great resources online in the Digital Library. For school-age children taking the SOLs, we have subject guides that allow your child to work on areas in need of help. Two book series—Support Coach and Ladders to Success 2—target reading and math. We also have SOL study guides for most SOL tests, including: reading and math, grades three

through eight; science and writing, grades five and eight; Virginia and U.S. history, grade 8; as well as high school science (biology, chemistry, and earth science) and history (world history and geography, both pre-1500 A.D. and 1500 A.D. to the present). Each guide contains strategies for studying and test-taking and two practice tests with answers and explanations to help your child feel more confident on test day. Also, you can access additional content at the publisher’s website by visiting the URL located in the back of the book. In fact, we have print copies of most test preparation guides—including college admissions, occupational exams, and many more—from trusted names, such as Kaplan, Barron’s, Peterson’s, and The Princeton Review. We even have preparation kits for the U.S. Citizenship test. Using your library card on our Digital Library, , you have access to two great resources in our Digital Library: the Testing and Education Reference Center and the Learning Express Library. The Testing and Education Reference Center is “powered by Peterson’s.” Peterson’s is a well-known publisher of test preparation guides, as well as guides to two- and fouryear colleges, graduate schools, grants and scholarships, and many other higher education and occupational guides. This is where the Testing and Education Reference Center shines. It has study guides and test preparation materials, including practice tests, for all major standardized exams. But it also includes a very robust college search function, with the ability to narrow choices based on the importance of factors such as campus life,

academics, and more. You can also search for nursing programs, distance learning programs, and scholarships. You will even find guides to assist you in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). An advantage of the Learning Express Library is that it has skills improvement sections for people of all ages. This site is divided into centers, including Career Preparation, High School Equivalency, College Admissions Test Preparation, School, Adult Core Skills, and Recursos Para Hispanohablantes. The School Center has practice tests for math and reading comprehension at the Elementary, Middle School, and High School levels. Additionally, the Middle School and High School levels include writing and grammar, vocabulary, social studies, technology, high school science, and geography. Resources for Spanish speakers includes practice to improve reading, writing, speaking, and grammar, along with preparation for the U.S. Citizenship Exam. The Learning Express Library contains too much information to describe here, so we encourage you to explore the numerous study guides; practice tests for all major standardized exams; and advice for career tools such as resume writing, interviewing, and interning. To locate both resources, just look for Test Prep in our Digital Library at pwcgov.org/library. Finally, if all you really need to prepare for that upcoming test is a quiet place to study, we have that too! Chinn Park, Haymarket Gainesville, and Montclair libraries all have group study rooms available for reserving online at pwcgov.org/library. We hope to see you soon at the library! ❖

When and why did you decide to join this company/firm? I have been a banker for over 15 years and have always loved working for community banks. Late last year John Marshall Bank asked me to lead their Treasury Services Division. The offer was a great opportunity to do something very exciting in the world of business banking. This role allows me to help develop innovative products and services to meet the modern banking needs of our business clients. How does your business serve the local community? John Marshall bank is a business focused, locally owned and operated, community bank. We provide individuals with competitive savings rates and access to a variety of consumer mortgage services. Our commercial lenders help fuel entrepreneurship by providing small business access to the capital they need to grow their business. We also understand the importance of volunteerism. For example, the members of our Prince William office volunteer with the local school board, volunteer fire department, Junior Achievement in local schools, and the Haymarket food pantry. Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your current profession. I am proud that I was selected to be enrolled in the Virginia
Bankers Association School of Bank Management at the University of Virginia. This is a three year, graduate-level professional development program teaching executive bank management principles. How has the HGBA supported you in your business? HGBA has been instrumental in helping me grow my network and contacts in the local community. It has given me numerous opportunities to develop business as well as give back to the community. What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals? 1. Use a business credit card for short term monthly spending. Businesses are actually afforded more protection against fraudulent transactions on their credit card purchases than those made with a business debit card. 2. Protect your business checking accounts with Positive Pay. Positive Pay is a service that allows business customers the ability to submit a list of pre-approved checks and electronic debits for their banks to process. Items not on that list will be flagged for review before clearing. It's a great way to avoid having to dispute an authorized transaction after the fact. 3. Don’t share passwords. GOING GAINESVILLE GOES TO TRANQUILITY DAY SPA BY LESLEY SALMAN PHOTOS COURTESY GOING GAINESVILLE
Going Gainesville stepped out of the sensory deprivation tanks we told you about last issue and hopped on over to Tranquility Day Spa to continue our “self care.” Located in downtown Haymarket, Tranquility Day Spa was voted Best Of in the massage, nail and spa services categories and we were determined to find out why! There was no one more deserving to share this treat of destressing with than Kelly Hayes. Kelly is one of my realtors at Salman Home Realty. She’s been selling houses like a rockstar while juggling her family life and kids so I invited her to be my guest host. We sat down with Gloria Harding, owner of Tranquility Day Spa, and asked her point blank, “What is it that makes your spa the best?” Her response was simple. “The people who work here,” she said. “It may sound cliche, but each team member turns an interaction into an experience.”
It’s an experience that earned the spa a Lifestyle “Best Of” award and a place on Washingtonian Magazine’s list Top 10 Salons in Northern Virginia. And, moving beyond magazines, they’ve won just about every award in their industry. Tranquility Day Spa offers all the services of a full-service salon and a full-service day spa: facials, manicures, pedicures and massages, to name just a few. But that’s not all. Every year, the business makes charitable donations of about a quarter of a million dollars to the local community. They truly live up to their motto, "a love and compassion for beauty." If you want to take a peek at Tranquility Day Spa, our video can be found on Facebook at facebook.com/goinggainesvilleva. Click on the "videos" tab and scroll down to the Tranquility Day Spa banner. Going Gainesville will be back next month to honor another of the Gainesville and Haymarket businesses you voted “Best Of” so don't miss this space or our video spotlights on all of your local favorites on Facebook!

hen it comes to comfort food my family doesn’t always crave a big bowl of stew or a hearty bowl of pasta. Sometimes they actually ask for healthier options that really nourish them. This is one of the recipes my boys clamor for and it’s great if you’d like to expand your recipe repertoire. I love it because it looks and tastes like a meal you’d enjoy at a restaurant, yet you get to enjoy it in the comfort of your own home! This recipe calls for one pound of chicken thighs, but you can easily double it for a larger crowd. To make it even more delicious, fill your bowl with your choice of greens, lentils, brown rice, quinoa, feta, tzatziki, hummus, olives, cucumbers or tomatoes. However you choose to make this delicious Mediterranean Chicken, make it your own with your choice of additions to your bowls. Enjoy!

n mid-2018, Haymarket resident Meg Hawkins and her husband, Eric Provow, launched a non-profit organization, Making Everything Good (M.E.G.), to formalize the fundraisers and charitable projects they had worked on for several years. Hawkins recounted the humorous story of how it came together. According to Hawkins, her friend Angela, who was experienced in building websites and creating designs for others, suggested that she consolidate her many fundraising efforts in a website. Angela came up with the brand, “Making Everything Good.” Hawkins was drawn to it, thinking it was a good idea to honor a person who was doing charitable work. “But who was that person?” laughed Hawkins as she said she didn’t realize Angela had cleverly used her name (Meg) to be the acronym for her new nonprofit. Before things became official, Hawkins and Provow worked tirelessly raising money on behalf of various local nonprofits, filling in the gaps by working on small projects wherever help was needed the most. Hawkins’ full time job in law enforcement and Provow’s military service and employment as a firefighter and paramedic created a passion in them that resulted in what would become M.E.G.’s mission statement: to “assist and support the needs of individuals, families, and organizations associated with public safety, military, veterans, and the local community.”
The Driving Force
When asked what motivates her to help people, Hawkins recalls a frigntening time during which she almost lost her husband to suicide, nearly 2.5 years ago. After living through that trying situation, Hawkins and Provow decided they wanted to make a difference in their community by helping others. “Service to others is a huge and important
20
{ MARCH 2020 |
thing to us. There’s nothing like the feeling of making somebody’s day and doing something for somebody who hasn’t asked for anything,” noted Hawkins. One of Hawkins’ largest and most heartfelt projects she has worked on is Project FACT. For this project, Hawkins hosts annual donation drives to help the Inova Ewing Forensic Assessment and Consultation Team (FACT) raise funds and collect new clothing for adults and children who experienced sexual abuse, assault, or violence. Another large project she works on is “Color Me Brave” which involves visiting children at the Inova Fairfax Hospital oncology center and giving them art supplies and games to help them pass the time more cheerfully. Hawkins, her husband, and her small team of volunteers often hear of needs through the community and they pitch in to help as much as they can, whether through raising money or by purchasing and donating items in-kind. Hawkins’ recent work with Chantillybased nonprofit Western Fairfax Christian Ministries, which helps people with basic needs including food and shelter, made her aware that many of the families they served did not have enough money to wash their clothes. To help, Hawkins came up with a “Laundry Night” initiative and raised $300 to pay for laundry services for 12 families for one month. The blog on the M.E.G. website lists some of the small charitable projects the non-profit assist ith. For example, Hawkins talks about helping a public safety family in need by securing a donor to purchase technology equipment and software to help their autistic son. There was also a project to raise funds for a police officer from New Jersey who lost everything in a fire. While Hawkins eagerly shares information about many of her small charitable projects, she limits some details to protect the privacy of the individuals she helps. Some of the

details Hawkins enjoys making public is the amount of money M.E.G.. has raised through various fundraisers, such as $250,000 for the Officer Down Memorial Page program, $5,800 for the first annual FACT project, and $3,000 for Omar Delgado and his family, who were affected by the Pulse nightclub shooting in Florida. When asked how she and her husband became such successful fundraisers, Hawkins said it stemmed simply from ordinary networking and personal connections with people she has met over the years. Clearly, Meg Hakins has the magic fundraising touch and because of it, she continues Making Everything Good in the Haymarket area and beyond. ❖ FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT MAKINGEVERYTHINGGOOD.COM.

GOT a Goal? GET a Plan! BY FRANNIE BARNES
A
long with the bubbles, hats, noisemakers and other New Year’s accoutrements, there are the resolutions. New Year’s resolutions have a reputation of falling flat, with only 8-10% of people following through. The reason is that resolutions typically concern things we’re unhappy with about ourselves; we need to lose weight, exercise more, be more mindful. Why not flip the script this year and start this year with a plan – a plan for success. Eileen Carlucci-Moses is a life coach, mentor and the founder of Redesign Your Life Coach. When she faced major life changes, she decided to redesign her own life by creating new possibilities in the areas that she wanted to transform. In order to get there she invested in herself by taking personal and professional development classes. Eileen has an impressive career as an entertainer. She studied dance and became a professional dancer performing on many stages including the world-famous Siegfried & Roy Show in Las Vegas. You might say that entertaining is in her blood, so naturally, the first version of her new career was hosting events for women. Redesigning her outlook on life gave her the idea to host her very first event. Through that journey she met many incredible people, one of whom inspired her to take a course in leadership. She attended a course at Landmark Forum in Alexandria and that was it; she was hooked and that one course turned into many. In fact, she recently completed a year-long team, management and leadership program and launched her coaching business simultaneously. Through this program, she learned the building blocks of success: the importance of committing to herself, making her goals a priority, and creating possibilities. Through her personal coaching, Eileen offers guidance and encouragement to anyone hungry for change and ready to commit to and fulfill their goals and dreams. One of the first conversations she has with a client deals with leaving old stories and self-limiting beliefs about themselves in the past and by doing so, opening up space to create the new. When I asked her about achieving goals (or resolutions, as it were) she offered the following plan to success:

1.
B U I L D A T E A M Whether you are making a decision to make a life change, or mapping out a journey for a trip you’ve always wanted to take, Eileen recommends you put together a team. That team might consist of a travel agent, a travel buddy, and a friend who has already visited said destination and can provide recommendations. Consider your team your village. With each new possibility, build a team that will support it. If you want to lose weight, maybe your team will consist of an accountability buddy, a personal trainer and a nutritionist. “Creating a team to support what you’re going to do is key. All successful people have teams around them,” Eileen says.
2.
P L A N E V E R Y T H I N G I N I N C R E M E N T S Eileen recommends planning goals in three-month increments and committing to whatever the goal is like it’s a done deal. Set a goal date and map out the steps to get there over those three months. Most importantly, put everything in your calendar. Even things that are reminders for you … it goes in the calendar. “The key is calendar management. Giving your word to what you say you’re going to do. Declare it,” she suggests.
3. S T I C K T O O N E T H I N G A T A T I M E Too many goals at once can be challenging to achieve. Create your possibilities and see them through by showing up every day. “You can create something from nothing if you just show up and do the work,” she encourages. 4. C E L E B R A T E
Y O U R A C C O M P L I S H M E N T S . “Keep evidence of your awesomeness and everything you’ve accomplished. Take out your journals, your laptop or whatever tools you used. Look through them and celebrate how much you’ve achieved.”
So pick one goal, commit to it, and make a plan. That’s how resolutions become reality. ❖

Guitars In Sync Local Father-Daughter Duo Showcase Their Musical Talents BY ANALIESE KREUTZER PHOTOS COURTESY OF GEORGE BOWLEY AND LAURIE DUPUIS
W
hen George Bowley first heard the music of Les Paul and Mary Ford in the 1950s, he was captivated. Now, 65 years later, he and his daughter, Laurie Dupuis, have released a CD and begun performing the music they love at local venues. Bowley and Dupuis have been recording music in Paul and Ford’s multiple guitar and vocal style for more than 30 years. Until recently, their music remained underground, literally, as they put together tracks in a studio in the basement of Bowley’s Haymarket home. “About three or four years ago, we decided we wanted to make music to release to the public,” Bowley said. The duo put together Guitars in Sync, a 12-song CD they released in late 2017. The CD includes classics such as Paul and Ford’s hits “The World is Waiting for the Sunrise” and “Vaya Con Dios” as well as an original song by Bowley titled “Guitars in Sync.” The CD was considered for two Grammy nominations. The CD wasn’t the duo’s first commercial recording though. In the 1980s, they recorded jingles for the Don and Mike radio show in Washington, DC. In the 1990s, they recorded a five-song karaoke cassette for the Pocket Songs label titled You Sing the Hits of Les Paul and Mary Ford. “We had to get the arrangements and the recordings to sound exactly like what they recorded,” said Bowley. Performing live has been another recent development for them. In 2018, through an acquaintance, they were asked to perform at Heritage Hunt Club in Gainesville as the opening act for an Everly Brothers tribute show. “They gave us 25 minutes,” said Bowley.

“We had never performed before a live audience. The curtain opened up, and there were 300 people there. Afterwards, we said that went well. Let’s try another one.” They have since performed at local libraries, country clubs and, in October 2019, at the Hylton Performing Arts Center on George Mason University’s Manassas campus. To achieve their sound when performing live, they use background recordings minus the parts they play live. “We play and sing to ourselves,” said Dupuis. “It’s fun. We look at an opportunity to perform as another night to sit down and play music and be happy knowing that people are sitting there listening to us because they want to listen to us. You can’t beat that,” Bowley said.
ABOVE: George Bowley and Laurie Dupuis in their basement studio. LEFT: Les Paul and George Bowley in 1977.
A Lifelong Passion Bowley was in high school when Paul and Ford came out with their first hit. “That style of music just grabbed me and stayed with me for the rest of my life,” he said. Bowley—who went on to get an advanced degree in communications engineering—already had developed a strong interest in electronics and broadcasting. When he saw Paul on television talking about the equipment he used to create his music, Bowley realized he had some of that same equipment and wondered whether he could make music like that. He wrote to Paul and the two eventually met and bonded over their shared love of experimenting with was being called the new sound. “It was a process called overdubbing, where a guitar wasn’t just one guitar, it was a series of guitars,” said Bowley. “Les would record a track and then he would superimpose another track on top of that one. He would build an orchestra of guitars. He did the same thing with the vocals. Mary would sing the lead, and then she would sing a harmony track and another harmony track. It almost sounded like a chorus. When they had their first hit, nobody knew what he was doing.” Bowley and Paul lost touch when Bowley entered the U.S. Naval Academy and then went on to serve 20 years in the Navy. In 1972, he moved to the DC area. With the prospect of

“We look at an opportunity to perform as another night to play music and be happy knowing that people are sitting there listening to us because they want to listen to us. You can’t beat that.” staying in one place for a while, he got out his recording equipment and renewed his friendship with Paul. The two shared their experiences with multiple track recording techniques over the years and got to the point where they were on the same level in terms of what they could do. In October 1997, at the Iridium Club in New York City, Paul said, “George and Laurie are the only two people I have ever heard in my lifetime who have exactly duplicated the sound that Mary and I had in the 1950s.”
A Labor of Love Although they didn’t make music their careers—Bowley worked in the private sector for 25 years after he retired from the Navy, and Dupuis is a clinical psychologist who recently completed her doctorate—it is clearly something they love. “We do everything from composing, arranging, producing, recording, editing, mastering, distribution, mechanical licensing, promotion, the whole nine yards,” said Bowley. “It takes quite a while from an idea to completion, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I wouldn’t want anybody else messing with my tracks. If it takes us a year to do a song, so what? “We’re not fame and fortune oriented. We get .0003 cents if someone listens to one of our songs on YouTube,” he said with a chuckle. Bowley and Dupuis are thinking about doing more performances this year and possibly creating another CD, but they are moving ahead at their own pace. “We take what comes and enjoy whatever we get,” Bowley said. “Big Brothers and Big Sisters is a phenomenal organization and I learned so much from them,” Michael said. In 2018, Michael narrowed down his business idea and shared it with two close friends, Greg Holmes and James Smith. “My intent was to have a short meeting, maybe 90 minutes or so, and five hours later, my wife wondered what we were still talking about! Through our brainstorming session, Greg and James provided excellent suggestions about mentorship,” said Michael. One of those suggestions was that he look into working with MENTOR Virginia. MENTOR Virginia is an organization that promotes effective youth mentoring by increasing the capacity and sustainability of mentoring programs, and providing resources to support the mentoring field throughout the Commonwealth. “They really helped me understand the need, demographics and how to put together a plan,” said Michael. This past October, in honor of his father’s birthday, Michael launched A Few Good Men, LLC. A Few Good Men (AFGM) is a nonprofit organization that specializes in mentoring young men between the ages of 8 and 21. It is a one-on-one mentoring program, and mentors devote one hour a week, or up to four hours a month, focusing on the development of their mentee. Mentees are currently found through word of mouth, and networking with local schools,

ichael Morgan fondly recalls the three men who helped shape him as a youngster: his father, his brother, and his neighbor Chuck, or Chucky, as the neighborhood kids called him. Chucky was 10 years Michael’s senior, but he was a role model and someone who looked out for the younger kids, making sure they were making good decisions, and taking the time to talk to them if they weren’t. In addition to Chuck, Michael credits his dad for being the biggest influence in his life. He demonstrated what it means to be a hard worker, to “always be there” and be consistent, and today Michael recognizes how fortunate he is. Because of the good things his mentors taught him, he’s made it his mission to do the same for others. Michael and his wife Tamika live in the Gainesville area and are parents and grandparents. They are active members of their community and a local church. Family and community means everything to them, so it seemed like a natural progression when Michael decided to become a mentor. Through his church he coached young men between the ages of 20-25 with their life and career plans. He truly enjoyed talking with them and working with them, and saw a huge need for a youth mentoring program in the Gainesville area. But first he needed training and development, so he became a mentor through the Big Brother Big Sisters in Fairfax.

“It isn’t just for low income families– we all need a mentor in life” community organizations, and churches. The organization is Christian based; however, it is not a requirement that mentees are Christian, nor is the organization affiliated with a specific church. And while it’s a male-based program, Michael said none of it would be possible without the help of his wife, and the wives of the current mentors. The purpose of mentoring is to provide a consistent presence in the lives of mentees, help guide them with decisions, and encourage them to see what they can do with their lives. Currently, many of the mentees come from singleparent homes, but that is not a requirement. “It doesn’t matter what your economic background is, if you think your son could use a mentor, we’re here. It isn’t just for low income families – we all need a mentor in life,” Michael said. Security is paramount. Having spent more than thirty years in government security, Michael understands the importance of strict standards. Mentors go through a stringent vetting process and a background check (which is repeated annually). After

passing, Michael meets with potential mentors to get a better understanding of who they are, and why they want to mentor. Mentees are interviewed as well, to find out how to best match them to a mentor. Parents and guardians are also met with. “Growing up these days, you need a variety of people in your life as you walk through your journey. We all hear the statistics of many young men not doing what they should be doing. At A Few Good Men, we want to be the light for these young men, to help and encourage them. We want to teach them that they can achieve great things through hard work, but it does take a support system,” Michael said. Recently Michael and Tamika returned from a vacation in South Africa where they were amazed at the community’s commitment to work together to raise each and every child within it. “It really does take a village,” said Michael. “And we want to be that village in our community.” ❖ For more information on A Few Good Men, call 703-754-3512 or visit afgmentoring.net.

A Soprano’s Serenade OPERA SINGER ANGELA KNIGHT PRODUCES MUSICAL ABOUT PRINCESS DIANA
BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK
T
here aren’t many people who can trace the very beginning of their talent back to the womb. But Angela Knight can. Knight’s mother would listen to music while pregnant with her. Each time classical songs played, her baby would dance around as if she was enjoying it even before entering the world. Early on, Knight’s voice got people’s attention. She credits her parents for recognizing this gift. A television series in the 70s called New Zoo Revue used song and dance to teach children lessons about kindness and respect. One of the characters, Henrietta Hippo, sang opera and Knight would imitate her. Knight’s mom took notice, and told her dad about Knight’s voice. “I wanted other things,” says Knight, but she remained obedient to her parents’ wishes, attending conservatory, taking voice lessons, then going on to win awards and scholarships. “I believe God gives us talents that we may not see at first but with the right encouragement from others, those talents are revealed,” she says. After attending the Cleveland Institute of Music, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory and George Mason University, she found herself at age 28 lost and determined to not spend one more dime on voice lessons. “You fall into a big black hole when you graduate,” says Knight. “Nothing was budging.”

Angela Knight and Nathan Létourneau, a tenor in the Washington National Opera, at a rehearsal for Queen of the People’s Hearts.
Despite her hopelessness, she knew deep down she was destined for bigger things. One day at the airport, she saw a famous person who she knew could help her. Gathering her courage, she walked right up to him and said, “I want to sing Caro Nome; will you help me?” He responded, “Then you will.” She was invited to the Metropolitan Opera in New York City to sing for this influential person. But first, she needed to be ready. She met with Jackson Sheats, a well known and successful singer and professor at Shenandoah University who told her exactly how this audition would go: First, the famous person would be 15 minutes late, then the piano player would play poorly. But no matter what, just keep singing. It all happened exactly like that. Knight nailed it, and was asked where she wanted to sing. “I could have asked for anything,” she says, “but I’d just had a baby and I wanted to be close to home.” She asked for Washington DC, where she performs to this day, a tenure of more than twenty-one years. While watching Hamilton at the Kennedy Center one evening, Knight had what she calls a lightning bolt idea. “I am going to write a musical about Princess Diana,” she thought. In the dark, she reached into her purse for something to write on, because the ideas just started flowing. Eager for intermission, she ran outside and called her musical partner, Randal Dewey, a producer, songwriter, engineer, and musician, to ask if he wanted to produce it together. Once the two started writing, the songs flowed easily, says Knight. They did have one hiccup though. Producing music is now a digital skill and the domain of a younger crowd. Not to be daunted, Knight decided to hire college interns to help with the new technology, ultimately selecting four students from Berkeley College of Music. “Producing is where my life experiences all come together,” says Knight. The students lived with Knight and she used this time to show them the balance of life concept she believes in. Each morning, they would work, and then each afternoon the group would go on a hike, or visit a winery, or explore somewhere outdoors so they
could clear their minds and begin anew. “You need to be free to create,” says Knight. Clem Leaux, the lead intern, was looking for this type of life experience when he came to Berkeley from Paris. He says that when he and the other interns met Knight at her home in Haymarket, they “got along humanly and musically” with ideas coming so quickly, they could hardly stop writing and composing. “We would have those moments where Angela would tell us a story we didn’t know about the princess,” says Leaux, “and the group would add emotion and tension to the song through the rhythm, crescendo, and chords.” Knight explains that a particular song about the paparazzi hounding the princess would need to sound like the audience should feel; heart-pounding and building until the moment when silence hits. With Haley Kim on piano, Knight singing, Zack Page on guitar, Jannick Frampton on bass, and Clem on percussion and recording ideas and arranging them on sheet music, each song was crafted to take the audience through the joy and sadness of the story. It was a harmonious collaboration; each member of the group maintained respect for each other’s thoughts and creative spirits. Knight’s care and hospitality were a blessing, Leaux says, and the time spent visiting battlefields and waterfalls inspired them. When the music was complete, Knight and Dewey asked the interns to take several of the songs and adjust them to be more in line with the music of their generation. The result is a musical with a fresh, youthful feel to it. Queen of the People’s Hearts will make its debut on April 4 at the Hylton Performing Arts Center. It is not a story from the tabloids, but instead a musical about love; the brilliant and talented Angela Knight’s love for Diana, the Queen of people’s hearts. ❖

Looking a-Hedges BY MARK LUNA
One of the great experiences I enjoy as a wine guy is hosting tasting events. I love showcasing a collection of wines, sharing details of where they’re from and how they’re made, and hopefully turning an enthusiastic wine crowd onto something new and exciting. I think that’s what we wine lovers always look for anyway, something new to get excited about. I recently played host at one of my retail accounts, and presented a beautiful portfolio from one of my favorite wine growing places in the country, Washington State. And the label? Hedges Family Estate. Washington has emerged as its own unique wine destination. There are 14 AVA’s (American Viticultural Area), including the highly esteemed Red Mountain and Walla Walla areas, as well as the most famous Columbia Valley, producing almost 90% of the state’s wines. As for varietals, the state shines in both Bordeaux (cabernet sauvignon, franc and merlot) and Rhone Valley (grenache, syrah, mourvedre) grapes. You’ll also find cool varietals like lemberger (Blaufrankisch), muller-thurgau and marsanne. All of this makes Washington State a great place to crack open a bottle. Back to Hedges, and my event… Washington State native and winery owner Tom Hedges was enjoying an international marketing career, with a focus on food commodities, when he was approached by a colleague and asked to produce a wine that would be sold in Sweden. The first shipment, a Columbia Valley cabernet sauvignon – merlot blend, in 1987 was the moment that Hedges Cellars was created. Helmed by Tom and his wife, Anne-Marie Liegeois, a native of Champagne, France, they, along with their two grown children, Christophe and Sarah, run the family business together. For over three decades now, they’ve produced beautiful, award-

winning, bio-dynamically farmed/Demetercertified wines. As for the wines served that night, the array was vast and diverse. For this piece, I’ve chosen a few that I recommend you try and enjoy. One of HFE’s best wine values, and the bottle that kicked off the night, is their CMS Sauvignon Blanc 2018. A wellintegrated blend of 80% sauvignon blanc, 19% chardonnay and 1% marsanne (hence the CMS), this wine is light straw in color, brilliantly clear, and refreshing. Peach, gooseberry and lemon fruits complement floral notes on the nose, while biscuits and tinges of orange marmalade add to the palate. It is 100% stainless steel fermented, allowing for a firm acidity. And at $15.99, it escapes the bargain bin dropouts without putting heavy stress on the wallet…a great wine for the money. Playing big brother to the sauvignon blanc is the CMS Red 2016. Another artful blend from winemaker/Hedges’ daughter Sarah Hedges Goedhart, this wine is 30% cabernet sauvignon, 58% merlot and 12% syrah. And like its sister counterpart, the fruit is mostly Columbia Valley sourced, with a small yet respectable pull from Red Mountain. CMS Red 2016 is a fun mix of strawberry and raspberry fruit, cocoa, earthy spices and
a bit of red licorice. The palate shines with bright acidity, rich flavors of red fruits and earthy spices, while hints of dried sage, cocoa nibs bring up the finish. Sarah’s cellar notes will tell you that “about 40% of the wine was racked to barrel, completing fermentation, then aged for an additional 15-18 months. The other 60% is tank fermented, then racked onto French oak barreling.” This is a great food wine and another deal at $15.99. One of my favorite varietals is syrah. I could write paragraphs as to why, but I won’t. Washington State has emerged as a syrah lover’s paradise, and the Descendants Liegeois Dupont (DLD) Syrah 2014 might just be the Capital. An homage to AnneMarie’s family name (Liegeois), the DLD 2014 Syrah is truly outstanding, made from 100% syrah and 100% Les Gosses vineyard grown (Red Mountain AVA). This full-bodied jewel sees 19 months in-barrel, split between 72% American and 28% French oaks. Here are the tasting notes, as pulled from Sarah’s book – “Dark, gorgeous purple color. Intense dried blueberry cinnamon roll with a hint of maple bacon. Slight sweet vanilla with cloves, cinnamon and just a hint of smoked cedar. Cinnamon, blueberry and smoke on the palate that fills your mouth due to the lush texture of this wine. A nice tartness balances out the fullness and a slight taste of anise on the spicy and lush finish. A real treat, this Syrah has a pleasant richness, yet is also noticeably delicate and elegant.” Having enjoyed this bottling numerous times myself, I couldn’t have said it better. Price-wise, it lands just inside $40 on the shelf, worth every penny.
And finally, no Hedges line up would be complete without their Bordeaux signature varietal based wine, the Hedges Family Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2016. With a driving force of 80% cabernet sauvignon (75% requirement to label the wine by grape name), the HFE CS 2016 is complemented with 7% merlot, 5% syrah, 5% cabernet franc, 2% petit verdot and 1% souzao, an eclectic little grape of Portuguese origin. Much like the DLD, the HFE CS 2016 is a big bold, expressive wine that truly epitomizes the depth of Washington State. Deep red in color, there’s a complex weave of aromas that includes blackberry and cherry, black licorice, new leather, earth and clove spices. There are also hints of coffee and dark cocoa, with just a touch of vanilla. These assortments are all derived of the characteristics of the additional varietals. But the cabernet still drives the train. The tannins are firm, but elegant. Fruit was sourced from four exceptional vineyard sites, and the wine is 100% barrel produced, aged 21 months…another solid balance of American and French oak. Priced around $45, this is wine for the more serious minded consumer. It also has a James Suckling rating of 92 points. So, there you have it. Get to know Washington State, and more importantly, the beautiful wines of Hedges Family Estate… they’ll become a permanent part of your wine life, as they have mine. Until next time, Happy Vino’ing! ❖

JK Moving Hiring 300 in Prince William expansion
JK Moving Services, the nation’s largest independently owned and operated moving company, is planning an expansion into the Manassas area that brings with it about 300 new jobs. The company has purchased 135 acres off Wellington Road adjoining land owned by Google. The land, acquired from Gainesville Associates, allows the Sterling-based company to further extend its operations, clientele and employee base in Prince William County, JK Moving said in a news release. In addition, the acreage will be used for commercial, industrial and data center development. “With our business growing, we need to expand our footprint in Northern Virginia,” said Chuck Kuhn, CEO and founder of JK Moving, said in the release. “Securing a property in Manassas complements our existing Woodbridge location, and helps us in terms of better serving our area customers and hiring additional staff members.” JK expects to add 300 new employees in the Manassas location, including administrative, sales, driver and warehouse positions, which could be good for the Prince William County job market. The company currently employs nearly 1,100 people located throughout the world, with the majority based in the D.C. metro area, including Loudoun, Prince William and Montgomery counties. Planned completion of JK’s new 100,000 square foot building will be in the fourth quarter of 2021 and hiring will begin shortly before that date. A second 100,000 square foot building also is planned.

With strains of Kool and the Gang’s iconic song, “Celebration” streaming in the background following the Group 6 Region B swimming championships at the Prince William Aquatic Center at Colgan High School, the Battlefield Bobcats’ boys’ team decided to do exactly that by jumping into the pool, splashing the water playfully on each other, while also cheering and embracing each other after storming to the boys’ team title with 404 points, 58 ahead of second-place Patriot. But Battlefield was not the only team with things to celebrate: Patriot won the girls’ team title, sparked by an individual double victory by junior Abigail Daniel (who won titles in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke) and solid relay and individual performances overall. A beaming Battlefield coach Jay Thorpe raved about his boys’ Battlefield’s boy swimmers celebrate team’s effort, which with their trophy in style at the 2020 Region 6B Swim & Dive Championship included a victory in the held at the PWCS Aquatics Center in 400-freestyle relay, and Manassas on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020. second-place finishes in the 200-freestyle and 200-medley relays, as well as a few individual titles. “We’ve been building for this for several years; we kind of expected it to happen,” Thorpe said. “Whereas on the girls’[side] we’ve had an influx of some really [younger] talented swimmers and they really Patriot captured the girls team title made a run for it [the team with a 372.5 point total at the 2020 title] tonight. I think they Region 6B Swim & Dive Championship might even do better at held at the PWCS Aquatics Center in states than regionals.” Manassas on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020.

summer camps & private schools With the weather still chilly and winter coats still hanging by the door, it may seem strange to start thinking about summer camps...but now is the time to plan. Experienced parents know that summer camps fill up fast and early. The benefits of summer camps for children are undeniable. They expose children to a variety of people, places, and activities which help them gain independence and learn lifelong skills. Camps can also get kids unplugged and physically active, as well as providing a break for parents during the long days of school vacation. This is also the time of year that parents may contemplate making a change in their children’s education, perhaps changing schools. If you’re thinking of investigating a private school education for the fall, now is the time to start.
