nd so, the countdown to the holidays begins, and for most of us, our stress levels start to climb. Well I beg of you, dear reader, don’t do that to yourself this year. Instead, try the following Top 5 Ways to Survive the Season with Your Sanity Intact: 1. Encourage visitors to stay elsewhere. Sure, you can accommodate a few guests, but unless you’re running an inn, encourage family and friends to stay at one. (You can’t really be expected to cook and bake and clean bathrooms too, can you?) We’ve got plenty of options for you – and them – to consider, starting on page 32. 2. Get jiggy with your holiday color scheme. I’m unsure who decreed what colors should be used at the holidays, but if you’re tired of red and green it’s time to cut yourself some slack. Decorate with the hues that make you happy. Silver and blue? Pink and brown? Go for it. For inspiration, check out page 24. 3. Snooze or lose. The time change can be a killer, but there are ways to combat the exhaustion so many of us suffer at the start of Daylight Savings Time. See page 8 for NOVANT Health’s terrific suggestions for staying well-rested this season. 4. Don’t try and do everything yourself. This is a tough one for

me because I can be a pretty big control freak. This year though, I’m taking cookie baking off my plate and putting it on Danielle Robinson’s. She’s talented, local, and everyone loves her confections. Discover Class-y Cookies for yourself on page 16. 5. Stock up on wine. Last Thanksgiving, we weren’t two minutes into dinner when the topic turned from my niece’s Girl Scout cookie sales to global warming. From there it was just a hop, skip, and a “there’s no such thing” before things got a little heated and I headed for the wine fridge. I’m not the expert Mark Luna is though, and his selections for the holiday (see page 38) will get you through dinner no matter where the discussion goes. In closing, I’d like to suggest a sixth way to survive the season with your sanity intact. Hang out with your dog or cat, ferret or cockatoo and while you’re at it, snap a photo and enter it in our Cutest Pet Contest (see page 45). The winner will be featured on the cover of our special Pets issue in February 2019. Cheers!

Thankful for Friends BY MELINDA CASILLI

N

ovember is the month of Thanksgiving. It’s a time to give thanks for everything you have in your life and everyone who offers you their help and support. The Prince William Public Library System (PWPLS) does not need to wait for November to roll around to reflect on the people who selflessly offer their help and support to its eleven libraries. PWPLS has hundreds of volunteers, teens through adult, who check in materials and shelve books daily. Other community members offer their time and expertise teaching a class or offering a program. There are also those who give generous monetary donations, donate new items for the library collection from the Library’s wish list on Amazon, or who purchase commemorative bricks. One of the libraries biggest supporters is a group perfectly named, The Friends of the Library. They are a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the libraries and the programs they offer. PWPLS has six Friends groups made up of volunteers from the local community who work very hard so the libraries can offer free programs to the public. The Friends groups are: The Friends of Bull Run Regional Library, Friends of Chinn Park Library, Friends of Central Library, Friends of Gainesville Library, Friends of Montclair Library, and Friends of Potomac Library. Each group raises money through ongoing used book sales, membership dues, and other fundraising efforts. Without their hard work and funding, most of the library programs the PWPLS offers wouldn’t exist. Our libraries wouldn’t be able to offer summer reading programs,

6

or year-round kids programs, such as: weekly story-times, teen and tween programs, and adult programs, some of which include highly sought-after guest speakers! Funding also pays for supplies and/or refreshments needed for each program and, in some libraries, furniture and equipment. At Haymarket Gainesville Library, the Friends group began in 2011 when the only library in Haymarket was the Gainesville Neighborhood Library, located in James S. Long Regional Park. The group was built from scratch with a lot of hard work. When the new Haymarket Gainesville Community Library opened in 2015, the Friends were there helping make the grand opening a success. Without their support, it would have taken some time after the Library opened to be able to start offering story times. Since then, the Library has continued to offer a variety of fun and interesting programs, which have been funded by the Friends. This year’s Summer Reading Program was a huge success because of the hard work and dedication of the Friends. They were responsible for the Library being able to offer popular programs like Bar C Ranch: Backyard Zoo, Hampstead Stage Theatre: Treasure Island, Dinoman, Bollywood Dance with Rhythmayer, Toni’s Lazer Tag, and Bob Brown’s Puppets. How can you help? Become a member of the Friends of Gainesville Library (or any of the other five Friends groups throughout the county)! When you join, your membership dues go directly to Haymarket Gainesville Community Library. They also

need volunteers to sort and prepare books for sale and to help run the book sales. They also accept used book donations to be sold in upcoming sales, however, they do not accept manuals, computer books, magazines, encyclopedias, VHS tapes, cassettes, foreign language books, moldy, or insect-infested books. Tax receipts are available at the circulation desk for donations. You can also help when you shop at one of the book sales. The money you spend goes directly to the Library. Thank you, and Happy Thanksgiving! ❖

The next book sale at Haymarket Gainesville Community Library is scheduled for Saturday, December 8, 2018, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The sale will also include local crafters, just in time for Christmas shopping. hose of us who are still awake in the early morning hours of Sunday, November 4 will experience a moment of déjà vu when the clock strikes 1 am for a second time. At 2 am, we turn our clocks back an hour, and are rewarded with an extra hour in our day. It is the official ending of Daylight Savings Time – we now have earlier sunrises, but one less hour of daylight in the evening. The reaction to earlier sunsets varies from person to person. Some are merely annoyed that it’s now dark before they leave the office, while others experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) – a type of seasonal depression associated with the decrease in daylight. For many, sleep schedules go awry as they adjust to an earlier onset of darkness. Effects on Sleep Schedules Naturally, most people begin to feel drowsy as the sky darkens. That’s due to our

bodies’ circadian rhythms – our internal clocks – keeping us alert or making us drowsy at certain points in the day. The body responds to nighttime by signaling the brain to release melatonin, a hormone that makes us ready for sleep. However, there are steps you can take to adjust your circadian rhythm and make sure that the time change doesn’t negatively affect your sleep schedule. Here are some tips from the sleep experts at Novant Health UVA Health System.

1

GET AS MUCH SUNLIGHT AS POSSIBLE. Spending time in

the outdoors, especially in the afternoon can lead to a better night’s sleep. Bright, natural light helps the brain recognize it’s daytime and will put off production of melatonin. A light box that simulates sunshine can also be used.

2

GET MOVING. Incorporating light exercise into your routine later in the day will help

keep you energized until it’s time for your desired bedtime. Instead of “resting your eyes” after dinner, go for a walk or take care of household chores that keep your brain alert and your heart rate elevated.

3

TURN UP THE HEAT. With winter approaching, this is one piece of advice that you’re likely already following. Cool environments lead to a drop in body temperature, which at a certain point triggers the body to produce melatonin. That’s why people often sleep best in slightly cool rooms. To help avoid the early onset of melatonin secretion, keep the temperature of your home comfortable and relatively warm.

4

STICK TO A BEDTIME SCHEDULE. Do your best

to turn in at your regular bedtime, particularly in the days immediately after Daylight Savings Time ends. Find ways to keep your brain stimulated until about an hour before you

6

EAT ENERGIZING FOODS AND CAFFEINATE IF YOU MUST.

Caffeine – in healthy doses – can be a wonderful thing. If the darkness really affects you and you’re concerned about dozing off midway through dinner, try having your morning cup of coffee closer to lunchtime. Snacking on fruit or a small amount of dark chocolate fuels your body with healthier sugars that won’t lead to a crash later in the afternoon. Balancing your meals with carbohydrates for quick energy, and proteinpacked foods for long-lasting energy is another great way to keep your energy levels up all day long. Gleanings from the Bible

Ruth 2:2

The Kingdom of God The kingdom of God is revealed in chapter four of the Gospel of Mark as a seed—a matter of life (vv. 1-20, 26-29). The kingdom of God is not produced by activity or organization. We need to have an organic view of the kingdom of God. It is God Himself as a seed (or gene) sown into human beings and developing in them into a realm of the divine life. Just as the plant kingdom consists of all living plants, the animal kingdom is the totality of all animals, and the human kingdom consists of all mankind, so the kingdom of God is essentially Christ Himself as the divine life developed and enlarged into a kingdom. The kingdom of God is the Savior, the Lord Jesus, as the seed of life sown into His believers and developing into a realm which God may rule as His kingdom in the divine life. Therefore, the kingdom is the full growth and development of a wonderful person—Jesus Christ the King. The kingdom of God is not an outward matter of teaching, activity, or organization. On the contrary, it is the Triune God in His incarnation sown into His chosen people to grow and develop in them into a kingdom. In this brief definition of the kingdom revealed in the Gospel of Mark, we have a statement of the intrinsic element of the entire teaching of the New Testament. The New Testament teaches us that the Triune God has been incarnated in order to be sown into His chosen ones and then develop within them into a kingdom. If we read the New Testament in this light, we will see that after the Triune God became a man—Jesus Christ—He began to preach the gospel and teach the truth and thereby sow Himself into those who heard Him (v. 14). While He was preaching and teaching, He was sowing His word into His hearers. His word conveyed Himself into them (cf. John 6:63). Hence, through His word He as the Godman, the Triune God in humanity, was sown into His chosen people. Preaching and teaching were His way of sowing Himself as the seed of the kingdom, the gene of the kingdom. When people heard the word of this God-man and received it, they were actually receiving a wonderful person, the One who is both the Triune God and a real man. This is what is recorded in the four Gospels. The Gospels record the sowing of Christ as the seed of the kingdom. In the Acts we have the propagation and further spreading of this sowing. In the Gospels we see the initial spreading, first from one Sower to twelve sowers and then to seventy other sowers (Luke 10:1). In Acts thousands more sowers were raised up. These sowers were those who had received the seed, the gene. By receiving the seed they became ones who could then sow it into others. In this way the sowing of the seed was propagated. The Epistles reveal the growing of the seed, the gene of the kingdom. We see this growth, in particular, in 1 Corinthians 3. In verse 9 Paul says, “You are God’s farm.” In verse 6 he says, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God made to grow.” This is the growth, the development, of the kingdom seed. Further development of the kingdom gene is seen in 2 Peter 1. According to verse 3, God’s “divine power has granted to us all things which relate to life and godliness.” All things pertaining to the divine life have been given to us for the purpose of development. Verses 5 through 7 describe this development: “Supply bountifully in your faith virtue,

and in virtue knowledge, and in knowledge self-control, and in selfcontrol endurance, and in endurance godliness, and in godliness brotherly love, and in brotherly love love.” Here we have the steps of the development of the seed unto maturity. Peter indicates that if we have this development, “so shall be richly and bountifully supplied to you the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (v. 11). Hence, the Epistles clearly show the development of the seed of the kingdom. The harvest of the kingdom seed is found in the last book of the New Testament—Revelation. According to chapter 14, there will first be the firstfruit and then the harvest. Verse 4 speaks of those who “were purchased from among men as firstfruit to God and to the Lamb.” Then verse 15 says, “The harvest of the earth is ripe.” Those who are the firstfruit spoken of in Revelation 14 will be among the co-kings with Christ in the millennium. The thousand years of the millennium will be the full development of the gene of the kingdom. During the millennium many of those who have received the kingdom gene will be co-kings with Christ. At that time our Father might boast to His enemy, “Little Satan, You are in the abyss. Look at all those who are now co-kings with Christ. Many who have believed in My Son and received the gene of the kingdom have become co-kings with Him. My Son is the King, and all the overcoming believers are His co-kings. Satan, look at the King and the co-kings. What a wonderful kingdom this is!” In order to enter into this kingdom, we must first open to receive the gospel of the kingdom by believing in our heart and confessing with our mouth the name of the Lord Jesus (Rom. 10:9-13). Then we must give this kingdom seed a way to grow in us by allowing the Lord to gradually and continually make our heart the “good earth” (Mark 4:5-8)—giving Him permission to dig away every rock (hidden sins, personal desires, and self-seeking) and remove every thorn (the anxiety of the age and the deceitfulness of riches) which may choke the seed and prevent it from growing. We may cooperate in this through confession to the Lord (1 John 1:9) and opening to Him to give Him every inch of our heart (Eph. 3:17), thus receiving the word and allowing it to grow and bear fruit— even a hundredfold! As this seed grows in our hearts, it begins to blossom fully into God’s full expression. Accordingly, Jesus Christ will get His kingdom not by our religious effort but by growth in a normal way. It is not an instant transformation but by growth that goes on from day to day. The seed of life is all-inclusive—it has everything we will ever need to live the kingdom life. May we see that God’s kingdom and His eternal purpose are within this precious seed! “Gleanings from the Bible” is a twelve-part series contributed by a local Christian home meeting group that loves the Lord Jesus, believes that the Bible is God’s Word, and cares for the oneness of the Body of Christ. Success Starts When Preparation Meets Opportunity Effective pre-season training BY COLBY SCHRECKENGOST

Mindset. Create a mindset of getting better every training session. Don’t just work out, have the mindset to get better every session, every drill, every lift. Stay positive despite setbacks and listen to your coaches.

2

Self Care. Good habits prepare the body for the rigors of the season. Utilize myofascial release techniques (foam rolling, tiger tails, etc.) to speed recovery between training sessions. Don’t over train and get at least eight hours of sleep nightly.

running, jumping, shuffling, change of direction, endurance) and training programs should focus on improvement in all of those areas. But it’s more than just working out. It takes a targeted, global approach, assuring that all aspects of an athlete’s preparation are addressed. This approach gives athletes the best opportunity for success on the field, the ice, or the court. As a strength coach, my job is to persuade athletes away from taking a single-minded approach to training (i.e. just lifting weights) and instead focus on the Eight Pillars of Pre-season Training.

BY DEV BE

ew would argue that to be successful at anything, you must be prepared. Whether it’s a meeting at work, a test at school, an upcoming game, an NFL Championship, or a job interview, preparation is always key. And nothing reduces the chance of success like a lack of preparation. Athletes preparing for a competitive sport typically need eight to twelve weeks of focused training prior to tryouts or the start of the season in order to greatly enhance their opportunity for success. They or their parents should do a quick assessment of their readiness by asking themselves the following questions. Where is their head at right now? Is the athlete well rested, excited and ready to go? Or burned out and in need of some down time or possibly a different approach to training? What is the commitment level (both time and financial) of the athlete and parents? How is their body composition? Athletes with significant body fat percentage (20-30 percent) will require a more incremental approach to training than an athlete with lower body fat. What does their sport coach tell them they need to work on before the season? Most sports require the same physical skills (i.e.

important are pre-training snacks, post-training recovery shakes, as well as knowing when and how to safely use supplements.

4

Mobility. Increasing joint mobility (especially in the hip, shoulder, ankle, and thoracic spine) can greatly improve athletic performance and reduce injuries.

5

Pillar prep or core stability. All movement starts from the core. Without a stable core, athletes can incur an increased risk of injury and energy leaks which can diminish performance.

6

Movement. Educating or re-educating the body to move more powerfully and more efficiently (speed, agility, and change of direction) is paramount. Proper posture and ground striking mechanics are critical. Athletes need to be taught and coached efficient movement patterns. Speed can be taught and improved with good coaching.

7

Strength. Stronger athletes are more powerful, more confident, and more injury resistant. Improving horsepower (muscle size and strength) increases the athlete’s ability to apply force into the ground when running, shuffling, jumping, crossing over, or changing direction.

8

Energy Systems Development. What used to be called plain conditioning has evolved. We’re now able to develop energy system programs that more closely mimic the sport that the athlete plays. We’ve moved on from mindless laps, sprints, or suicide drills. By following the Eight Pillars of Pre-season Training, athletes should reach their full athletic potential. It seems like a lot of work…and it is. But, by establishing good daily habits and following these processes consistently, the athlete will be prepared for his or her opportunities and will enjoy success. ❖

Tell us about your experience with the HGBA. How has it supported you in your local business?

HGBA provides me with two things: First, a place to increase my exposure to potential customers, and second, a place to go for me to buy local. What are the top three business tips and tricks can you offer other professionals?

1. Know your demographics and be able to meet its expectations. 2. Connect with the community by being visible as an entity. 3. Give back when you can. Haymarket and Gainesville have lots of worthy causes to support. Are you from this area? If not, what brought you here and what do you like about our town?

Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your current profession.

We, my wife Celeste and I, have the opportunity to provide our services to those who have been wounded protecting our interests around the world. We provide a mosquito/tick free environment for the Serve Our Willing Warriors Retreat Center in Haymarket. I met one of the families and was overwhelmed when he told me about his family “reunion” and since he knew who I was, he thanked me for making it a safe place for his “city” kids.

I am a retired military veteran and a military brat. I have never lived anywhere as long as I have now lived in Haymarket. We came here to be in a rural setting with land and space. We are also stargazers, something you can’t do easily in Manassas and east of here. What is your favorite season in this area, and why?

We love the winter and early spring because we own a seasonal business. God takes care of mosquitoes and ticks, so we can enjoy the down time and travel. What are some hobbies you enjoy?

We love reading and golf and taking

walks. We also like to travel and see our extended family. What is your favorite restaurant?

Here in Haymarket, El Vaquero is our favorite comfort food restaurant. What is your favorite local high school sports team?

We support Battlefield HS. Are you involved with any nonprofits? If so, which one(s) and why?

Celeste is the president of the GFWC Dominion Woman’s Club, and I am the Grand Knight of the Fr. Jon O’Brien Council, St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Mission, as well as a member of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, the Heritage Hunt Chapter of MOAA, and the American Legion Post 1799. We are involved because we have always supported our local community, our church and the noblest of charities we can find. Each of the above raise money for our youth and/or our community. We are still strong supporters of the Haymarket Regional Food Pantry. What was your first job, or your most interesting job prior to your current profession?

My first job was as a Naval Aviator. I flew the P-3 Orion, Anti-Submarine Warfare aircraft and have been all over the globe defending America’s interests. I flew in the Gulf War keeping our aircraft carriers safe during Desert Storm. ❖

Origin of a Recipe HOLLANDAISE SAUCE STORY AND PHOTOS BY AARON LYNCH, CHEF-OWNER, HIDDEN JULLES CAFE

W

elcome to the second edition of Origin of a Recipe. This month we’re featuring our distinguished “hollandaise for days” sauce. Feel free to double or triple this recipe and reheat it throughout the week. Hollandaise is a versatile sauce that can easily span multiple breakfast through dinner dishes. Made with four common ingredients that you probably already have in stock, it has the potential to be your next family favorite sauce. At Hidden Julles Cafe, we use hollandaise sauce on our famous Eggs Benedict Parker Style. It features our in-house, hand-made pork chorizo sausage, fresh avocado, and a perfectly poached egg perched on top of an in-house and freshly baked organic English muffin that is smothered with this sunny warm hollandaise sauce. Everyone raves that our hollandaise is the tastiest around, and that’s because our defining ingredient is hands down the farm fresh organic eggs from Whiffletree Farm. My mom, Julie Ann Stevens Lynch, for whom the cafe is named, enjoyed making hollandaise for special occasions. Our family has such fond memories of her in our kitchen carefully preparing the sauce with delight, and her joy as she watched each one of us lick our plates clean. My mom loved dousing asparagus and Eggs Benedict with hollandaise and my dad, brothers, and I joked unceasingly that we had, “hollandaise with asparagus” instead of “asparagus with hollandaise.” During the creation of Hidden Julles Cafe, my brothers and I agreed that mom’s hollandaise sauce was a definite must to incorporate. We are elated to share this family favorite with you.

COOKIES! COOKIES! COOKIES! Haymarket resident Danielle Robinson whips up a delicious new business BY FRANNIE BARNES

emember when you were young and an adult would ask what you wanted to be when you grew up? Maybe your dream was to be a teacher or an artist, perhaps a doctor or a circus ringleader (also referred to as parent), or maybe you didn’t know yet. There are those lucky ones who grow

up to pursue a career doing what they love. And then there are the even luckier few who go on to pursue more than one career they love. Some might call these people overachievers, but I see them as living the reallife version of a movie’s plot twist. Haymarket resident and entrepreneur Danielle Robinson is one such plot twister. After a very fulfilling 20-year career as an engineer with Lockheed Martin, during which she juggled her boys’ sports commitments and robotics tournaments, her husband’s activities,

family engagements and her own volunteering and interests, she decided last year that it was time to change it up, to pursue another passion. Faster than you can say “plot twist!” Class-y Cookies, LLC was born. The new venture didn’t come as a surprise to those who know Danielle. She’s very artistic and enjoys such hobbies as painting, quilting, singing, and baking. (If you’ve been fortunate enough to be on the receiving end of her baked goods, then you know how talented she is and what a treat her creations are.) But those who know Danielle

As Danielle says, “I’m a strong believer that we are meant to grow our interests alongside our family, and I wanted my children to not be afraid of change. I believe you should use your skills where you can have the greatest impact.” Since starting Class-y Cookies in 2017, Danielle has had a steady stream of repeat clients, as well as holiday waiting lists. Her process is simple, she uses the same recipe for all of her cookies, but the magic happens when she decorates them.

She’s happy to work in concert with her clients to come up with ideas for an occasion, or to dream up something awesome on her own. Danielle also offers cookie decorating classes and her website includes a line that describes her personality best: “When it comes down to it, everyone is made from the same basic ingredients, it’s how we mix them that makes us unique and special!” For more about Class-y Cookies including ordering and cookie making classes, call 703650-8526, or visit classycookies.blogspot.com.❖

The Formula for a Well-Designed Home BY YARON LINETT

“I just bought a house. How do I make it a home?” “I’m selling my house. How do I make sure I get the best price?” “Help! I need to organize all my stuff. Where do I begin?” Interior designers deal with these and many other questions every day. For the purposes of this article, let’s start with the first one: “I just bought a house…”

20

{ NOVEMBER 2018 |

HAYMARKET LIFESTYLE

}

What color should I paint? Recently one of our Leesburg clients called us in for a consultation. When we came around to the issue of paint she had a familiar look on her face. For years she had painted every house a particular shade of yellow and felt guilty about not being more adventurous. We can’t tell you how many times we’ve seen this. After going through every color people invariably come back to the one they love. Give yourself permission. Why live with a color you don’t like as

Where do I start? Surprise, it is not the paint. Most people want to jump right in with a paint color, after all there are so many to choose from. But that’s exactly why we don’t begin there. We can mix any color paint you like...but we can’t get any color antique rug of the exact size and pattern you want. So, we begin with the items that we have the fewest options in and for most people the order is as follows: 1. Existing piece you can’t live without. 2. Artwork in the style and price range you’re comfortable with. 3. Statement rug, which is really a painting on the floor. 4. Signature lighting. 5. Upholstered furniture and casegoods. 6. Window treatments and hardware. 7. Accessories and other soft goods. 8. Paint. Obviously that order can be shuffled a bit, but a specific shade of paint is going to be farther down the list than, say, wallpaper.

much? After all, you just bought the house, colors with mass appeal are for when you sell. Besides, chances are everything you already have goes with that scheme. Of course, if you do decide to go with a color you love but have never used before, then you need to assemble samples. These should be large and mobile. Paint a primed board at least a foot square in one shade of the color you’re considering. Paint a second board in a different shade, and a third board in still another. Look at each of them in both day and night lighting conditions. Make sure you put something white behind them too, holding them directly against an existing color will bias your perception. Once you have a feel for which is best you can proceed with confidence.

How do I decide on a furniture layout? We have “rules” for each room, for example in a bedroom the bed should typically be located at the farthest sightline from the door. In general, we construct a scale drawing of the room (you can use graph paper to approximate). Once we have that, we make little templates of each of the pieces of furniture and consider the paths that people and animals will take through the room. Where will people enter and where will they exit? Will they need access to a switch, socket, built-in? Leaving an adequate path to each of these areas, we then work from the largest pieces of furniture to the smallest. Always consider what the intended use of the room is. Is there a chair that needs a table for someone to put down a glass or a cellphone? Will the ottoman need to be able to be moved to another area frequently? Once you have a layout template, keep the pieces. Someday when you consider flipping the whole room around your back will thank you for being able to make sure it’s possible first.

When will I ever be done? Every case is individual, but don’t feel discouraged. The average person is not out of boxes for a year and typically people spend five years decorating after they move in. Even a professional such as I might still have yet to hang all our window treatments... Why doesn't my home look like one of those magazine homes? It depends on the magazine, but the answer is rarely because they are filled with high end goods. The truth is that we all have a problem with clutter. Beautiful pieces used simply was a mantra of ours for a long time. In the same way that black and white photography can turn a busy scene into fine art, eliminating the excess “stuff” that we all have is the number one way to move towards that magazine look. Understanding that it is not practical to live in a stylized box for most people we always attempt to add hidden storage solutions to every room. Once you have a place for everything all you need to do is keep everything in its place. Easy as long as you don't have children, pets, or unruly guests.❖

As for colors trending in hardwood and vinyl plank, grey tones are still popular. However, greige, (grey and warm browns mixed) is the most desired. We’ve found that new colors typically start on the West Coast, make their way to new custom homes here, and are ultimately incorporated into existing homes. Currently we’re seeing a trend in much lighter natural tones, (including greige), with a movement toward arctic whites.

Transform your home with flooring

L: Are there any types of flooring that never go out of style?

Flooring is an important consideration in any home. It can energize a space, inject personality, even provide a talking point, all while offering comfort. Lifestyle asked Tammy Titus of Kemper Carpet in Gainesville about what flooring materials and colors are trending right now, what things consumers should consider before buying, and what to look for in a flooring contractor. We also asked about options available to those looking for a quick, pre-holiday flooring makeover...for a friend, of course. L: What flooring trends and colors are most popular now? T: Right now it’s all about luxury vinyl plank. Its ability to withstand water makes it a suitable product for lower levels. Many customers prefer a hard surface in the lower level as it’s easier to

22

{ NOVEMBER 2018 |

care for. Hardwood is usually what they want, but real hardwood doesn’t work in areas where water can be a concern. Now the customer has an option to get the look of hardwood, but with better durability and a better price.

HAYMARKET LIFESTYLE

}

T: Timeless hardwood in mid brown tones. It offers the best priced hard surface with warm comfort and durability. L: What should consumers look for when researching flooring contractors and retailers? T: Check the overall reputation of the company. See if they’re on Angie’s List and what kind of reviews they’ve gotten on Yelp, Google, and the Better Business Bureau. Get referrals from friends and family. And of course supporting your local small businesses is the way to go. L: What are some factors that go into deciding what kind of flooring would be best for someone? T: The flooring specialist needs to ask important questions to understand

the individual flooring needs of each customer. Things like how much daily use does the room or rooms get, how many people live in the home, are there children or pets, are there concerns about elderly relatives slipping. Those are just a few. Once a product, be it wood, carpet, or tile, is selected, color is the number one deciding factor. After that, other considerations include design and pattern, durability, comfort, and of course cost and budget. L: What is the easiest and quickest flooring to install and what is the most difficult? T: None are easy, and all require skills to install. However, the easiest is vinyl plank and the fastest is carpet. In terms of the most difficult, installing ceramic tile and refinishing wood floors are both number one. Consumers should bear in mind that from selection to installation takes about two to four weeks, depending upon material availability. L: So the best options for a quick, pre-holiday flooring makeover are…? T: Wall to wall carpet, stair runners, and area rugs. L: What’s the best way to care for and preserve floors after installation? T: For wood floors, clean with Bona Cleaner. To protect them, place area rugs at entryways

and floor protectors under furniture. If you have pets, keeping their nails trimmed prevents scratches. For carpet, have it professionally steam cleaned every 18 months, and spot clean as needed, making sure to clean up spills or pet stains as quickly as possible. L: How often should homeowners update their flooring? T: Every 8 to 10 years. L: Is there anything you’d like to add that we haven’t asked about? T: There are promotional pricing and rebates that result in a tremendous amount of savings for consumers. These typically come in the spring and fall, so shoppers should stay aware and buy during those times to maximize their purchase. Lastly, beware of online sales. Flooring is a large important purchase and should be carefully thought out with professional assistance. When you buy online there’s no guarantee about the quality of the product and no one to help if it’s in any way defective. Consumers get stuck that way so my advice is to work with a professional who knows their products and your needs. ❖

DESIGNER DECORATING TIPS

for the holidays

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Nancy Powell and her daughter, Bethany Brower, are the designing women behind Powell Brower Interiors in Manassas. They’re committed to creating unique interiors that speak to your personality and good taste. PowellBrower.com

BY NANCY POWELL, POWELL BROWER INTERIORS

Do you believe the holidays are right around the corner? They’re coming up fast, but there’s still time to give tired decorations a little freshening. As a designer, I get asked frequently how to do just that, so here are some of my best suggestions for a new look this season.

Style with greenery. Another impactful way to style your home for the holidays is the addition of fresh flowers, branches and greenery. Live greens improve the air quality in your home, while emitting a lovely winter potpourri. Cuttings from your yard or those you find on a walk in the woods, bring the outdoors in and add an organic, non-commercial touch to your decorations. Mantels, consoles, windowsills and tabletops can all be enhanced with garlands and greenery. To make faux garlands look less skimpy, intertwine several differing garlands together and add sprigs of fresh greenery. The result is a more voluminous and realistic look.

Buy beautiful new cloth ribbon, and lots of it. The biggest impact you can make in your seasonal décor is using cloth ribbon. It is not a huge investment and it can update your look immensely. Buy the wire edged ribbon so it holds its shape, and if it has a hint of metallic, it is much more impactful. Some fabulous sources are Merrifield Garden Center and Michael’s in Gainesville, Oh Sew Persnickety in Haymarket, and Joann’s Fabrics in Warrenton. To establish a flow throughout your home, maintain the same color scheme, which means lots and lots of ribbon. Remember one large bow alone takes three-yards.

MULTIPURPOSE DECORATING Mulling spices create a beautiful centerpiece, smell heavenly simmering on the stove, and you can garnish your favorite holiday cocktails with them too.

Engage the senses. The journey through the holidays is all about the experience and creating memories. As you and your guests enjoy your home this holiday make sure it’s a sensory experience. SMELL: Use fresh greens, scented candles, and simmer spices on low on the stove. TASTE: Have baked goods on hand or in the freezer, cheese plates ready to serve in the fridge, a signature cocktail you can whip up quickly, and some holiday candy and cookies on hand to offer guests. SIGHT: Don’t forget to go beyond your beautifully decorated home and create a welcoming entry and curb appeal.TOUCH: Utilize cashmere and velvet fabrics, faux fur throws and pets dressed in Christmas finery (think fun ribbons and cute collars), to enhance the holiday feel of your home.

Change your tree color scheme. Research trending color schemes on Pinterest and make a plan before you start. Perhaps you can’t afford all new ornaments and decorations, but you can invest $5 in a can of spray paint and paint old, tired ornaments a new color. Add lots of new ribbon, some branches from the yard, and use a faux fur throw as a tree skirt, and voila! A fabulous new look for your tree. Remember, there’s no rule that says you must use red and green.

Some final notes: Curate your collections of decorations and alternate them from year to year. As a designer, I can tell you that it’s all about editing and highlighting what’s important. You don’t have to display everything you’ve ever collected every year. It is often visually and emotionally too much and adds to the stress of the season. Keep it simple and spotlight, as if in an art gallery, a few special pieces so they can really be honored and appreciated.

ear after year, the list of talented musicians emerging from the Contemporary Music Center (CMC) continues to grow. This nationally recognized music store in the heart of Haymarket is a hub for those seeking to begin the adventure into learning to play an instrument or using their unique voice to express themselves through song. CMC’s intensive weeklong Rock Camp builds confidence, creates once-ina-lifetime memories, and is known locally as one of the best experiences in a young musician’s early life. Director of Education Menzie Pittman ensures that each student is offered the chance to receive the best musical education possible and encourages children to advance in their musical journey while exploring their own creative process and abilities.

Directly under the store lies one of the best kept secrets around – the @4410 performance venue. Fans from the community gather here to enjoy open mic nights featuring musicians from local high schools and performances from Rock Camp participants. Because of this shared experience and like-minded perspectives, kids who participate in Rock Camp often form bands and pursue the opportunity to perform in many local venues around the DMV. One of these such bands is

Mercury Avenue - the three boy and one girl group of Jackson Ledbetter, Vlad Ratiu, Wyatt Kotas, and Sophia Patchan. Pittman revels in the success of these teens who hold a special place in the hearts of those at CMC who have watched them grow both individually and together.

“MERCURY AVENUE IS THE RESULT OF WHAT HAPPENS WHEN TALENT, FUN, AND OPPORTUNITY COLLIDE. EACH MEMBER BRINGS THEIR UNIQUE TALENTS TO THE BAND, BUT THE REAL SECRET INGREDIENT IS THE FUN THEY GENERATE. GUITARIST

JACKSON LEDBETTER DRUMMER Most Impactful Musical Influences: Rush, Twenty One Pilots, Fall Out Boy “All have greatly impacted my playing style and capabilities, the intricate rhythms of Rush paired with the simplistic yet powerful beats from Twenty One Pilots, all meticulously pieced together by the fast fills of Fall Out Boy.” At the tender age of 8, Jackson began drum lessons much to the chagrin of his parents who really wanted him to pursue guitar. After much convincing, Jackson found his way to CMC where he took lessons before joining the Rock Camp program. The opportunity to join with other talented musicians his age is something he remains thankful for. Humble and grateful, Jackson converses about music with ease, while his shoulder length hair peeks out from behind a backwards hat. It’s a style that fits his personality perfectly. He wants his fans to appreciate that Mercury Avenue’s sound is “unlike every other teenage rock band out there.” On the days Mercury Avenue is performing, Jackson counts down every second until the performance, when he can put his all into playing music that he’s spent countless hours preparing for. Pittman points out that, in addition to Jackson’s affinity for drumming, he is also gifted with a socially conscious heart. He led a collection drive for Hungry for Music - a nonprofit whose mission is to provide musical instruments to underserved youth - collecting and donating several hundred instruments to children who wouldn’t have been able to explore their talents otherwise. This year Jackson is thriving as a drum major for the Battlefield Marching Band and enjoying the three or so gigs a month that his dad organizes as the band’s manager. “Whether it’s in @4410 or on the field, the fun starts when Jackson plays drums,” says Pittman.

28

{ NOVEMBER 2018 |

VLAD RATIU

Most Impactful Musical Influence: Mark Knopfler, guitarist and vocalist for Dire Straits “Knopfler inspired me to go against the common trend of fast-playing guitarists and focus more on more melodically diversifying my songs using slower notes and no guitar picks.” Vlad remembers feeling inspired by music around the age of 6. Although his interest was originally in the guitar, the realization that his tiny arms at that age couldn’t fit around the instrument resulted in his parents enrolling him in piano lessons. But two years later, with a yearning still there, his parents bought him his first electric guitar. Through the years, with lessons in Ireland and the United States, and the exposure to Knopfler’s guitar techniques, Vlad perfected his fingerpicking instead of using a pic, and learned to focus on the slower notes and melodies of songs. Today, Vlad’s style is all his own. With his trademark long curls and steely expressions, he adds strength and focus to the group. “He’s the uniting force,” says Pittman. “Vlad is strong and steady and stabilizing to those in his company.”

HAYMARKET LIFESTYLE

WYATT KOTAS

Most Impactful Musical Influence: John Frusciante, guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers “It’s really the way he plays his music. John just lets go of thoughts of what others think of him, how he sounds, or

really just any self-conscious thoughts and lets the music work through him. He inspires me to be selfless.” With a “phenomenal singer” mom and a guitar-playing dad, Wyatt grew up surrounded by music and is primarily selftaught. Whether it was accompanying his mom to karaoke nights or visiting music stores for new gear with his dad, Wyatt was inspired at a young age to pursue his passion for music. Although he was at first intimidated to live up to his parents’ talents, the 7-year resident of Haymarket says that discovering Contemporary Music Center was life-changing. CMC and Menzie Pittman have played a “crucial role” in his life, his learning and appreciation for music, and the reason he began to take it seriously. CMC also exposed him to new music, new people, and a new lifestyle, while introducing him to the Virginia music scene and the other members of Mercury Avenue. “Whether he is playing bass or guitar, Wyatt’s performance is always electrifying. His performances inspire young musicians to strive and give their very best because when they watch Wyatt play they can see that when someone puts their heart into what they do, they become something to celebrate,” says Pittman.

SOPHIA PATCHAN GUITAR AND VOCALS Most Impactful Musical Influences: Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Led Zeppelin, The Doors “My favorite thing about performing with the band is singing and playing and making a sound you can’t just make by yourself. Performing with the band helps me work better with people in general by understanding that everyone’s part is important no matter how big or small it may seem.” Sophia’s musical journey began in 4th grade when she was gifted an acoustic guitar by her parents. She began learning to play this first instrument through music lessons at CMC with Mike Harrington, but eventually also acquired an electric guitar and then a bass. But another instrument Sophia wanted to improve on was her voice. Lessons with Anne Albright, also at CMC, compelled her to begin singing on stage. While soft spoken and quiet in person, the only girl in Mercury Avenue is a force on stage, winning the hearts of all those who see her perform. Pittman says, “Whether Sophia is singing, playing guitar, or playing bass, she is a rock of strength to those around her.” While Mercury Avenue plans to continue playing local venues, the years to come will find them in other places. Each one plans to pursue college and different career paths, but they all hope to play together when the opportunities arise during these separate journeys. For now, follow this talented group on Facebook @MercuryAvenueBand to see where they’ll be performing throughout the winter and spring or email mercuryavenue@yahoo.com to contact them. ❖

For me, and I’ll spare you all the details, Thanksgiving at home with my family is when and where I was introduced to wine for the very first time, years and years ago. I’m forever grateful to you, Dad. But, where did Thanksgiving come from? It’s a great story. We in America truly owe it all to Sarah Josepha Hale, a 19th century writer and editor, for whom a literary prize is awarded today honoring her legacy. In addition to numerous novels and essays, she was also a poet, and the author of

the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb.” In fact, the opening lines of that timeless rhyme were the first spoken words Thomas Edison ever recorded, in 1877, on his new invention, the phonograph. That was the very year Sarah had retired from her 40 year job as editor of Godey's Lady's Book, later renamed American Ladies' Magazine. Through all of her incredible list of achievements however, her most significant literary effort came in the form of a personal letter to Abraham Lincoln, in 1863, lobbying for a national holiday called Thanksgiving. Lincoln would learn that Hale had

spent almost 30 years, writing to five presidents, requesting such a day of national recognition. It was Lincoln, however, who supported the idea through legislation; and in recognition of a unifying day of relief from the stresses of the Civil War, Thanksgiving was born. What a gift to us all. As I mentioned, Thanksgiving, wine and I go way back. And the memories I have of Thanksgivings spent with my family and friends, as well from various times in my life, will last me forever. We’ve opened some great bottles over the years, and this year will be no different. So, for this issue, I

offer you a plethora of exciting wines to share with those you love. Now, no matter the hour Thanksgiving dinner is served, sparkling wine is the best way to start the celebration off right. It’s lively, festive and enormously versatile when it comes to Thanksgiving food. One of the hottest areas in the sparkling wine world today is the United Kingdom. And given our country’s English, Pilgrim settler origins, what an appropriate way to pay tribute to them. In 2008, Simon and Nicola Robinson founded Hattingley Valley, in Hampshire, England. A sparkling wine house (only), theirs is a beautiful property of 60 acres, with plantings of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier – the traditional varietals of Champagne. Led by winemaker/ director, and 2-time UK Winemaker of the Year, Emma Rice, Hattingley Valley sparkling wines

are all made using strict, traditional production methods. Of their numerous bottlings, the Classic Reserve is my personal favorite. Using all three grapes mentioned, plus a splash Pinot Gris, the Classic Reserve is pale gold in color, with a well-developed nose of biscuit and subtle oak. On the palate, there’s crisp acidity and fine mousse, making it both refreshing and gentle. Yes, it’s a bit of a splurge at around $45, but the HVCR garnered an impressive 92 points from Wine Spectator; and if you need bubbly for your Thanksgiving Day survival, it will get you through the food fête, start to finish. Moving towards the appetizers and main meal, especially if the less caloric ‘white meat’ is on your eating agenda, it would be an insult to grapes to not have some white wines sitting on

the table. This holiday, what’s sure to be on my table are Alsace and Northern California. For over 200 years, the Domaine Bott-Geyl has been producing white wines from some of the greatest vineyards in Alsace. A bucolic region on the border of France and Germany, Alsace is known for wines of substance, elegance and complexity. JeanCristophe Bott, the family’s 11th generation to produce wine, is firmly committed to preserving his family’s legacy. This year, his wine of my choice is the Bott-Geyl Points Cardinaux Métiss (2015), formerly called Pinot d'Alsace. Métiss is a rich, aromatic, well-balanced blend of pinot blanc, pinot auxerrois, pinot gris and pinot noir; the last grape of course is red, but is used in the traditional "blanc de noirs" (white from black) method in which the colored grape skins are removed from the fermenting wine before any red appears. On the nose, Métiss offers up soft citrus notes, with mandarin peel accents. The palate transfers seamlessly, as a bright, luminous core of mouth-watering acidity and classic Alsatian spice make the total experience unforgettable. Métiss is expressive, charming and focused; and at $20,

with 91 points from Wine Enthusiast, it’s the perfect refreshing white wine for the Thanksgiving table. From the ephemeral to the timeless, no harvest meal is complete without a bottle of Northern California chardonnay. Kent Humphrey is the owner/ partner and chief winemaker at Eric Kent Wine Cellars, and his sole drive is to make the best California wines possible. Sonoma County is home for him and his wife/ business partner, and art curator, Colleen; and it is there that they produce outstanding wines from some of the best sites in the county. His roster of bottlings includes a clean, crisp Sauvignon Blanc, a Pinot Noir second to none and two very unique, single vineyard Syrah’s. But, as great as those wines are, his 1 KM West Chardonnay 2015 is in a class of its own. Out of the glass, you’re immediately taken by 1 KM West’s unique green and gold color. Aromatically, citrus oil and peel, as well as baked quince, dominate the nose, and these overwhelming explosions fold beautifully into a palate parade of lemon curd and white cream. The mouthfeel extends

just beyond medium bodied, with plenty of acidity, carving out a finish that travels long and deep. Only 264 cases of this jewel were made, from three clones and four vineyard sites. It’s a worldclass, NoCal chardonnay that deserves a spot at your Thanksgiving table. Priced around $45, its magnificence is worth every penny. So, you’ve gotten through the first course or two, and you’re ready for more savory helpings. In other words, it’s red wine time. For years now, Cru Beaujolais has been a staple for my Thanksgiving table. Beaujolais is a wine producing region in the southern reaches of Burgundy, France, and is home to the grape gamay, a thin-skinned, low tannic cousin to pinot noir. It produces lighter bodied, acidic, fruity red wines, with sour cherries, red berries and black pepper notes. It is also comes in a very youthful delivery, known as Beaujolais Nouveau, which has an almost Bazooka Joe essence to it. The Cru wines, however, are a different beast, as they hail from 10 different communes that produce

much more complex and meal-worthy wines. I won’t name them all, but my favorite comes from the commune Moulin à Vent, often called the "Seigneur des Beaujolais" (Lord of Beaujolais). Domain Perrachon is a 6th generation property that dates back to 1877, and the family produces a Cru Moulin à Vent "Terres Roses" 2016 that’s out of this world. The perfect wine for dark turkey meat, with all the trimmings, Terres Roses is robust, with a ruby color and a bouquet dominated by iris and rose, spices and ripe red fruit aromas. The acidity is sharp, and there’s a slight grip towards the end that will surprise but not derail you. At a mere $20, it’s an absolute must for the hardcore ThanksgivingBeaujolais traditionalist. And finally, the ‘big red wine’ has to have its place as well, and the wine I choose is the one that my dad introduced me to a few decades ago, on Thanksgiving night, when my wine life began – Amarone della Valpolicella.

{ NOVEMBER 2018 |

From Veneto, Italy, and one of the most unique wines in the world, Amarone is produced with native grapes – corvina, rondinella and molinara – that are dried on straw mats for 4 months, then pressed, fermented and aged in oak for a few years, then again in the bottle for at least another year. My choice this year is Marchesi Biscardo Amarone Della Valpolicella 2013. A powerhouse wine, it’s defined by a very deep garnet-red core, with bright orange highlights, and a nose that starts from spicy, earthy aromas to ripe, deep cherry and cassis, with a hint of prune. A full-bodied specimen, dark cherries, leather and chocolate are all accented with orange peel and date. The finish is a mile long. The Bisacardo family is four generations deep in winemaking, and they are stalwarts of the both Veneto region and Amarone wines. It will set you back about $75, but believe me, you’ll never forget it. So, this Thanksgiving, wherever you are and whomever you are with, take a moment to thank Sarah Joespha Hale, for the gift she gave us and the years we’ve been blessed to enjoy it. Until December, Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Vino’ing! ❖

ife expectancy is still steadily increasing, with no signs of slowing down. Women in particular have seen an extending lifespan in recent years and right now have an average life expectancy of 81 years. 81! As biotechnology improves, it’s very likely that people will live well into their 90’s - or even past 100 years of age. While this is an exciting thought, it does require more detailed financial planning. Your retirement plan and investing strategy is designed to support you through the end of your life. However, because life expectancies are getting longer, the possibility of you running out of money in your years as a retiree is getting higher. The last thing you want is to run out of funds after you’ve passed an age where working is medically feasible. You want to have an investing strategy that supports you for your entire life - however gloriously long that might be. So, what can women do to better prepare for a longer future?

areas of their life, when it comes to investing with longevity in mind it can be a colossal detriment. For conservative investors, “risk” might be anything other than cash savings. However, for investors, risk can go hand in hand with a long term investment strategy. Risk is often a key component in your investing strategy, especially when planning for longevity. Many view risk as a measurement of investment volatility, but it’s actually a much broader term. To simplify things, we can view risk as a measurement of whether or not an investment might: • Lose capital, or the original amount invested. • Underperform relative to expectations, or a market benchmark. There is also risk associated with being too conservative in your investments: • Interest rate risk, where a rollover CD or a bond replacement will earn less interest than the original investment. • Inflation risk, where a conservative investment’s returns do not keep pace with inflation and the prices you have to pay for food, gas, medical care, and such. • And the biggest risk of all, running out of money before the end of your life. When you think about risk like this, it makes “risky” investments seem a little bit less intimidating. Risk needs to be viewed in a broad and flexible way because it’s a broad, flexible term used to define investments. There are many levels of risk that can be used in creating a portfolio that aligns with your needs.

Embrace Long Term Investing Strategies When you are planning to live a long life, you need to plan for your investments to generate wealth in the long-term. This means that they need to generate more wealth on the front-end of your investing so that they can continue to grow in value, pay dividends, and compound interest over time. savings account, will help you to increase wealth as you age. Essentially, compound interest works like a snowball. If you pack a small ball of snow between your hands at the top of the hill it doesn’t look like much. When you start to roll the ball down the hill, it picks up snow, and grows in size. The more snow it picks up, the larger it gets, and the more snow it can continue to pick up with each roll-over. Compound interest works the same way on savings. Investment growth works a bit differently, in that it doesn’t always grow in a straight line. But over time, equities can increase in value and some pay dividends, which if reinvested, will continue to grow the investment holdings. All of this is to say that embracing risk in your portfolio may be in your best interest when planning for longevity. Higher risk portfolios may not look ideal in the short term, but when your goal is long-term growth,

Be Active in Financial Planning Conversations Studies have shown that women are less likely to discuss money openly than men are. This applies to both the workplace and their personal finances. In many ways, discussing money may be the last taboo left among modern women. Neglecting to participate in your financial plan discussions when you’re planning for longevity can hurt you in the long run. It’s important that you know your investing strategy, budget, savings, what you owe, and what you own.

Understand Social Security and Survivor Benefits If you’re married, you aren’t only entitled to your own Social Security benefits when you retire. If you’re a surviving spouse, you may be entitled to survivor benefits, as well. Understanding when to claim Social Security, and how you can claim your survivor benefits if you outlive your

When building your portfolio, consider an allocation that aligns with your risk tolerance, time horizon, and liquidity needs going into retirement. The portfolio should also be reviewed and rebalanced regularly, and adjusted as needed to maintain the risk profile.

Planning for the Future The first thing you should think about when creating a longevityfocused financial plan is what your future may look like. Nobody wants to think about losing a lifelong partner or spouse, but it’s a very real possibility. Planning for a period of time as a single woman during your retirement may be something you need to prepare for. A professional financial advisor can help. s parents, we spend a great deal of time teaching our kids the old school manners of respect, consideration, honesty, kindness, making good choices, and of course we remind them of common courtesies such as saying “please” and “thank you.” We want our children to learn how to act appropriately in social situations and understand the importance of making a positive first impression. Today though, because of technology and cell phones, we must also teach our children how to behave on social media, as well as remind them that their actions can have a lasting impact on their current relationships, as well as their future. This is a subject that’s on all of our minds, especially mine because I’m the parent of two teenagers. I am also the Director for the National League of Junior Cotillions, an Etiquette school in the Haymarket/Gainesville area. phone etiquette, and the response from parents has been overwhelmingly positive. We don’t allow phones in our classes and encourage face-to-face interaction because it builds a bond of trust that digital communication simply cannot. Don’t get me wrong, I have accepted and embraced social media. I use Facebook for my business and have started learning and using other social platforms to keep up with my teens. But I do believe we need to be a little more vigilant in guiding our children, and part of that vigilance includes watching our own behavior on social media and thinking about the example we are setting for our kids. There’s never been a better time than right now to call a family meeting and begin a conversation with your children about social media manners and remind them about their choices, impact and responsibility. In short, we need to teach them to mind their texts and tweets:

tips for parents: Manage Together • Encourage your child to practice managing the use of their devices. • Partner with your children to monitor and set limits on apps, cell phones, etc. Treat Others With Respect • Be kind and considerate in person and online. • Avoid gossip. Speaking negatively about others is never acceptable. Think Before You Text or Post • If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t text or post it. • Get permission before sharing pictures or videos. • Texting does not replace talking. Always cool down and work things out in person if angry with a friend. Don’t Text in Front of Others • Engage with others and be present.

Create Device Free Zones • Dinner tables, cars, restaurants, etc. Stay Safe Online • Encourage kids to avoid conversations online with people they don’t know, and deny unsolicited friend requests. • Keep up with their passwords and monitor online activity. Social Media Manners are for Everyone • Make your digital footprint a positive one. • Encourage and practice faceto-face communication and remember to set a good example. ❖

They’re telling us? Battlefield’s Bryce Corbett wins state golf title

Battlefield High School junior Bryce Corbett remained patient in his quest to win the 6A state individual golf title at Magnolia Green Golf Club near Richmond. He opened the day bogeying the first two holes, but he knew the course well enough that, if he didn’t panic, it would play in his favor. On the fourth hole, he hit the ball within a foot of the cup before tapping it in for birdie. That was the shot Corbett needed to keep steady the rest of the day. Despite facing defending champion Kelly Chinn from Langley, Corbett stayed composed to finish with a 69 and defeat Chinn by one shot to capture the state title. "This means a lot," Corbett said. "College recruiting is starting to take off and this is definitely a big step in the right direction." Corbett, who finished tied for 12th on this same course at last year's state meet, totaled seven birdies Tuesday, including four on the back nine. "The
