Is it time to refinance? Have mortgage interest rates gone down since you bought your house? Are you looking to replace your adjustable rate mortgage (ARM) with a fixed-rate loan? We’re here to help! 540.349.0200 • TFB.bank

TO OUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS... We’re in for a busy Spring and Summer Real Estate Market, but with much of the country mostly staying home, it’s not your typical homebuying season! We at PRESIDENTIAL REALTY are ready for the challenge, leaning heavily on technology to provide the high level of information you need to make important decisions as well as safety and security for you and your loved ones. Whether buying, selling, or both, here’s what you need to know: • Virtual Open Houses and Showings: Facebook Live, FaceTime and Zoom are all being used to show properties. And many listings include a prerecorded tour of the home. • 3D Floor Plans and Interactive Walk-Throughs: Online tools make it easy to create interactive 3D walk-throughs and even allow for decor and furniture placement to give buyers a more lifelike feel of the space. • Electronic Signatures and Deed Filings: E-signing technology means there’s no need to meet in person to sign offers, contracts or any other paperwork needed in the process. • Desktop and Drive-By Appraisals: If sellers are hesitant to have an appraiser visit their property in person, desktop and drive-by appraisals are a good alternative. These use city data, prior appraisals and comparable sales information to assess a home’s value. Homeowners can video chat with the appraiser to show them the interior and exterior elements of the property.

The way we buy and sell homes may have changed for now, BUT IT’S STILL AN ACTIVE AND ESSENTIAL MARKET. If you have any questions about making a move, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. PRESIDENTIAL REALTY remains 100% committed to you and your real estate needs in these trying times, finding new and creative ways to bring you the world class results you expect from us. PLEASE TAKE CARE, AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO TALKING WITH YOU SOON!!

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT! “Patty is great to work with. She always put me at ease when I got anxious through the process, she was extremely responsive to my questions or anything that came up....she is the right person to have in your corner! She made my sell so seamless and we are working on my buy/build now. She is definitely the right choice!” - M.S. April 9, 2020 (sold in 3 days for full price - Haymarket, VA) “Ms. Toman is an outstanding realtor. She is extremely knowledgeable, hardworking, and friendly. I really enjoyed working with her and thought she did an amazing job.” - M.S. April 8, 2020 (sold in 4 days for full price - Haymarket, VA)

ell, this is the second issue I’ve put out from my dining room. In this unprecedented, unimaginable Coronavirus crisis, all our lives have changed. Following the inevitable period of confusion and disbelief that the world could have changed so much so quickly comes the realization that there is nothing we can do but pick up and press on, adjusting our lives along the way to accommodate this bizarre new paradigm that we find ourselves in. Primarily, of course, our thoughts are with those who are battling the illness, and their families. We have an increased appreciation for all our doctors, nurses, medical staff, and first responders, and a new realization of how vital grocery stores and delivery drivers are to maintaining the supply chain that keeps food available. And we thank all the owners and staff of essential businesses who have stayed open for us. We spoke to some owners of small businesses in Warrenton, Haymarket, and Gainesville to see how they were doing, and they gladly took the time to speak with us. They all wanted to share their experiences and thoughts on where we are today, and what the future might bring. On the whole, people felt that they were learning from the experience and the feeling was positive and hopeful. I ordered takeout from a Warrenton restaurant on Saturday, and was told it would be a longer wait because they were so busy. When I arrived to pick up my order, the parking lot was almost full. I found the dining room empty, but

part of the room had been transformed into an assembly line arrangement to accommodate the volume. There had to have been 20 bags sitting there all in a row waiting for pickup. So, we all are adjusting. People still want to eat out on a Saturday night, and they’re ok with the adjustments that need to be made to enjoy a restaurant meal. The restaurants are ok with making adjustments to accommodate their customers. So it’s a win-win. As a small business, Lifestyle Magazines have also been affected. We are seeing a drop in advertising revenue, which impacts the production of the magazines. We have had to make some changes here to adapt also. It’s new and strange for us too. We are trying to adjust our focus to relate to the new environment of our readers. Now interviews for articles have to be done by phone or zoom. Photo shoots need to be taken outside. Some articles that were already planned or prepared are no longer relevant. We are all working separately out of our homes. But it works; we have made it work. The main adjustment we have made this month is the production of one combination issue of the Warrenton, Haymarket, and Gainesville publications. We have produced one strong magazine with content from all three areas, instead of three smaller magazines. We are adapting, but still moving forward, and we are happy.

FAMILIAR faces

DANITA ARONE BY PAM KAMPHUIS PHOTO BY KARA THORPE

W

e all know how something as simple as a friendly face, a smile, and some kind words can brighten our day. Many customers, especially seniors, appreciate this from Danita Arone, a cashier at Harris Teeter. Grocery store employees have come into the spotlight in the last few weeks as we realize how important they are to our lives as an integral part of the supply chain for one of our most basic needs: food. They are appreciated more than ever for their hard work and service that puts them, and their families, at risk. Those that go the extra mile to provide excellent service and make customers feel valued are to be treasured. “Danita is a true favorite of so many of us who shop at Harris Teeter on Thursday/Senior Day. She has quite a following. While I think all the checkers at Harris Teeter are excellent, Danita has her own following, even to the point of customers waiting in line for her. She is just a lovely person,” said customer Judy Slaughter. Why does Danita feel she’s so well liked? “Seniors really like me. I’m older myself, so we kind of relate. I’m just really friendly to them, and I ask about their lives. I seem to get along with just about everybody, I try to make sure they know that we care about them,” she said. Danita, who worked at a Harris Teeter in Delaware for three years before relocating and starting at the

Warrenton store, works two days a week. She lives with and cares for her elderly parents at their home in Marshall. “That’s my main job,” she explained. Her favorite things to do to get out of the house and socialize are going to work and seeing her customers, and playing pickleball. “Pickleball is a big part of my social life,” she said. “It gets me out around people, it keeps me active and fit, and it’s fun to play.” Since her parents are in need of 24-hour care, Danita has to arrange for a caregiver to come in while she’s out, or depend on volunteers or other family members. Danita, who knows several of her customers by name and most by sight, is happy right where she is. “Cashier is what I like to do. I thought about looking into customer service, but that would be more hours, plus I wouldn’t get to see all my customers. They are what keep me here.” But the Coronavirus has changed things. Even though her work and customers are so important to her, Danita has had to make the decision to take some time off to protect herself and her family. “I decided that I should not work right now because of my parents, who are vulnerable to the Coronavirus due to their age. I would never be able to forgive myself if I brought the virus home. I will certainly go back to work once this has all slowed down. I really miss all of my customers.” ❖

Easy Spring Recipes

Laura Sears

HER EXPERTISE:

RECIPES AND PHOTOS BY LAURA SEARS

Easy, familyfriendly meals

Simple Spring Pasta with Mint and Peas

DIRECTIONS:

1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the pasta 2 minutes before al dente. Drain and reserve 2 cups of the pasta water. 2. While the pasta cooks, melt 4 tablespoons of butter in a skillet and then add your pepper, allowing that to cook for about a minute. 3. Add ½ cup of the pasta water and ½ cup of lemon juice. Bring to a simmer, add your pasta and the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter. 4. Reduce the heat and add cheese, mint and peas. Make sure everything is heated through, adding more pasta water ¼ cup at a time if needed. 5. Serve immediately.

I love this simple dish. It can be served as a meal or a side, and is filled with the bright flavors of the spring season. INGREDIENTS:

16 ounces thin spaghetti pasta 6 tablespoons butter 2 teaspoons freshly cracked black pepper 2 cups reserved pasta water ½ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice from about 2-3 lemons 1 ½ cups grated Parmesan cheese cup grated Asiago cheese 1 cup chopped mint 2 cups frozen peas

Individual Lemon Tarts A refreshing combination of tart and sweet for a springtime dessert. INGREDIENTS:

FILLING

1. To make the filling, beat the lemon zest and egg yolks until thickened, about 2 minutes. Whisk in the condensed milk and cream for one minute, then add the lime juice, mixing until thickened again. 2. Preheat the oven to 325. Spoon 2 teaspoons of filling into each tin, making sure you can still see the crust on the sides. Bake 10 minutes, allow to cool for another 10 minutes, and then place in the fridge for 3 hours or overnight. 4. Place a knife around the sides of each tart and gently remove them from the pans. 5. hen you think of a normal sixteen-year-old, you might think of a high school kid trying different things and figuring out what path they want to take in life. They’re likely involving themselves in different clubs and activities in high school in order to decide what’s next. Whether they’d like to go on to trade school or attend college, or any other number of options, they’re likely going through a phase of learning about themselves and their strengths. If you asked most sixteen-year-olds on the street what they’d be doing in 10 years, you’d probably get either a broad answer or maybe just a regular “dream job” answer. Mikey Goltry is not your average high school student. At the age of 16, Goltry has already attended a Broadway audition for The Music Man, received a scholarship to the Kennedy Center’s prestigious Summer Opera Institute program, and laid out where he wants the next 10 years of his life to take him. “In five years, I hope to be at a performing arts college for either musical theatre or vocal performance,” Goltry said. “Some of the colleges I’m really passionate about are the Manhattan School of Music, the Berklee College of Music, NYU’s Tisch musical theatre program, and Shenandoah University’s Conservatory.” Goltry is currently a student at Fauquier High School. He is heavily involved in both the choir and musical theatre programs and has been named #1 tenor in the district for the past two years. Other accomplishments of Goltry’s include being accepted to the National Choir and being named the #2 tenor in the nation. He

was also accepted for a role in an all-senior production of Pump Boys and the Dinettes as a freshman. Goltry attributes much of his passion and his success so far to his middle school musical theatre and choir directors at Warrenton Middle School. “They really saw my abilities and my talent and pulled me in and made me part of the programs,” Goltry said. “They inspired me to want to take on musical theatre as my career path.” He also credits his parents with supporting him and doing absolutely everything they could to provide for him and to help him reach whatever level of success he hopes to one day achieve. Another significant influence in Goltry’s life is Bob Swift of The Allegro Community School of the Arts. “Bob is absolutely

incredible, insanely talented, has such good insight, and is very passionate about his technique and his teachings,” Goltry said. “We have the best time working together and I feel like we’re collaborating rather than just that I’m the student and he’s the teacher, so it’s a really great experience.” Allegro’s vision is to create a place where the arts are a cornerstone of the community as well as every individual lifestyle. “Allegro is such an amazing outlet for young artists and young students who really want to pursue a career in music, or even just want to learn an instrument or be in a play or have an outlet for performing,” Goltry said. “They’ve been so gracious and have really provided me with lots of opportunities as far as auditions and training.” Goltry ended up auditioning for the Kennedy Center’s Summer Opera Institute program thanks to Bob and the Allegro school. This inspiring three-week summer program brings passionate, dedicated young musicians together in the nation’s capital to experience opera in a professional and nurturing environment that only a world-class opera company can provide. Aspiring classical singers thrive from WNO Opera Institute’s intense and focused curriculum, which prepares students for college performance programs and beyond. “I went in just thinking nothing of it, just go to the audition, that it couldn’t LEFT: Mikey at the Believe National Dance and Talent Competition

hurt, and that it would be a great experience,” Goltry said. “I was so proud when I got the email telling me that I got in - It just felt like all my hard work was paying off. It was just such a fantastic experience for me to be accepted into such a prestigious program.” In addition to the support system he has, Goltry wants people entering the industry to know that it’s extremely hard work and takes dedication. “It is not easy. It’s competitive and it’s a cutthroat business and is extremely stressful,” Goltry said. “At the same time, it’s so rewarding it’s brought me through so many things. It’s such an incredible outlet for anyone, whether you’re extremely talented or even if it’s just a hobby for you, it’s a fantastic amazing outlet for anyone who needs that. At the end of the day, music is just about how it makes you feel and how it makes others feel when you perform.” When he’s not performing or vocal training, Goltry has many hobbies. “I’m a very diverse person when it comes to hobbies. I love to read and I’m passionate about journaling,” Goltry said. “I love to journal every single day, about my life and things that are going on. It’s a great outlet for me to relieve stress.” Overall, Mikey wants people to know that Fauquier County is a hub for real, raw talent. “Just because we’re a small town doesn’t mean that we don’t have talent and that we don’t have a facility to help talented kids get where they need to be,” Goltry said. “There are other talented kids and a lot of people that don’t necessarily get the credit that they deserve.” In ten years, you’ll likely see Mikey Goltry performing on Broadway and letting the world know about all of the talent you can find in Fauquier County, Virginia. ❖

irbie Lapins and her husband Melvin Griffin became first-time parents this year—sort of—when they hosted an international exchange student from Germany named Ilja. “We were supposed to be helping him, but the reality is that we could never repay what he has given us,” Lapins said. “Having Ilja here turned us from a couple to a family, completely changed our perspectives and some of our goals, and taught us a lot about ourselves.” Lapins learned about the hosting opportunity at United Studies, a nonprofit that sponsors some of the exchange programs in the county, from a Fauquier County community Facebook post, and she immediately became interested. “I had been an exchange student myself, but I was unsure if we qualified to be host parents,” she said. Lapins and Griffin were not yet married at the time and are in their 20s, but they contacted their local coordinator and learned that anyone can apply to be a host. Jacki and Peter Dyrholm became hosts when Jacki saw a similar post in 2013. Her family chose a girl named Mayu from Japan. Dyrholm’s eight-year-old daughter Emma was very interested in Japanese culture at the time. “I thought, we probably would never get to travel to Japan, but wouldn’t it be cool to bring Japan to us for a year,” said Dyrholm, who now works as the admissions and marketing director for United Studies. Exchange programs give students the opportunity to experience life in the United States while living with an American family and attending high school. In the United Studies program, most students spend a full school year with their host family, arriving in August and leaving in June. The students all are between 15 and 18 years old. Regardless of their age, they attend high school as seniors so they can participate in prom and graduation, even though they are not actually graduating. The students hone their English language skills and learn about American culture, but the benefits to the students and the hosts go far beyond those goals. They often form lifelong bonds, keeping in touch and visiting each other for years afterwards.

hosted 18 to 20 students since 1984 and now host chaperones that come with the students. “Just keep an open heart and an open mind. Kids want to be part of your life, and they will become part of your life forever.” Lapins and Griffin have settled into a family routine with Ilja. “Melvin and I work full time, and Ilja attends Kettle Run High School. After work and school, we scramble to finish homework and house duties before trying to throw together a healthy meal and running out the door to Ilja’s martial arts,” Lapins said.

Settling In

Since 2002, Susan and Donald Schupp have hosted 16 students who have come from Europe, Brazil, Thailand, and Australia. The Schupps advise anyone hosting for the first time to consider the student as another one of their children. “Otherwise, it’s awkward. You’re not a hotel or a bed and breakfast,” said Susan. If a student is feeling very homesick, that’s usually a sign that they need to be more engaged with the family, explained Rene Brown, director of student services with United Studies and an experienced host parent. The students are encouraged to join school or community activities, and host families are expected to take the students to local sites and events to expose them to American culture. Many families also take

their students on vacation with them, but that kind of travel is not required. One way to integrate the students into your family routine is to give them a chore to do. “I had a Chinese student whose job it was to empty the dishwasher every day,” said Brown. “One day, I forgot to turn it on in the morning, but when she got home, she emptied it and put everything away anyway. You have to make sure you explain things in depth.” There can be language barriers, especially early on. The Schupps had a few students whose English was very weak when they arrived. “You point to things. You use Google Translate. You get by, and they’re fluent by the time they leave,” said Susan. “Don’t make any judgments,” said Mary Bzdak. She and her husband Pete have

Exchange programs and CORONAVIRUS Since 1985 United Studies exchange programs have integrated exceptional young people into U.S. communities so that perspectives are shared, misconceptions dispelled, and lifelong friendships are formed. During this world pandemic we are available 24/7 to answer questions and continue to provide support for our participants and host family communities. Student safety and well-being is our utmost priority.

An Extended Family

At this time, we plan to continue our high school program for the 2020-2021 school year, following federal, state and local health department recommendations.

The Schupps said that interacting with the students has made them much more internationally aware. “It’s made the world smaller,” said Susan. The couple keeps in touch with their students and have traveled to see many of them in their home countries. The Schupps have a daughter, and although she’s now married, they still participate in the program and are expecting a new student in August. Dyrholm and her family have learned a great deal about the cultures of their students. They have hosted several students from Spain and fell in love with Spanish culture and food when they hosted their first Spanish student in 2014. The family of their second student from Spain, Andrea, invited the Dyrholms to visit them. “In 2017, we spent two incredible weeks with Andrea’s family in Seville, and we now consider Spain our home away from home,” said Dyrholm. Brown said that people often think they need to wait until their children are in high school before they host. “The best age is probably when your kids are in third to 10th grade,” she said. Younger siblings are a plus. “Little kids worship the exchange students, and the students benefit because little kids don’t judge you on how you say things. Little kids enjoy somebody learning to talk with them.” Dyrholm chose some of her students because they shared a love of horseback riding with her daughter, so even though they were not the same age, they had something in common. “Emma had so much fun living with someone that loved riding horses as much as she does. They took lessons together and went on trail rides and overnight horse camps,” said Dyrholm.

One thing host families have in common is how close they become with the students. For the Dyrholms, their daughter now has brothers and sisters all over the world. “We

love seeing the bonds she forms with them,” said Dyrholm. A few years into their hosting experience, Emma decided that she wanted to know what it was like to have a big brother, so they chose Alejandro from Spain and have since hosted two other boys. “These students are not guests. It’s not even fair to say they become like family,” said Lapins. “Ilja is our family and always will be. When he arrived, we were still in the throes of planning our wedding. Ilja was not only present for our wedding, he

was a groomsman.” “I always tell people that the single greatest thing my parents did for me was send me on an exchange for the summer when I was Ilja’s age,” continued Lapins. “It gave me an education that I could never have received in school and taught me how to communicate, be independent, kind, patient, and analytical. It was a powerful experience for me then and hosting has been a powerful experience for our family now. I cannot recommend it enough.” ❖

Battlefield grad faced quarantine in Florida NEW YORK YANKEES

dreams on hold The coronavirus outbreak has impacted two Haymarket athletes’ sports seasons BY DAVID FAWCETT BILL KAMENJAR/FOR INSIDENOVA

Spink sees benefits in delaying Olympic Trials Camille Spink was honest with herself. If the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials occurred as scheduled in June, the Battlefield High School freshman had no expectation of qualifying for the Olympics the following month. At this point in her career, Spinks was content with the chance to participate in the trials, enjoy the experience, and do her best in the 50 and 100 freestyle. But with the Olympics postponed for a year, Spink has extra time to prepare for the trials, which too will be pushed back. That in turn has changed her mindset. “It’s a more realistic shot,” Spink said of making the Olympic team in 2021. “I will be more serious.” Spink said she was initially disappointed the Olympics were rescheduled until July 23-Aug. 8, 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic. But she understood the reasoning for the postponement and sees benefits in the delay. “It works out,” Spink said. “I’m here with my family and have another year of training.” Spink qualified for the trials first in the 50 free last June. She competed against swimmers older than she, including college freshmen, but still made the cut in the 15 to 18 age group. Her performance surprised her, but Spink felt more confident in the 100 free, which is her main event. She qualified in the 100 at a meet last August in Indianapolis.

{ MAY 2020 |

Battlefield freshman Camille Spink qualified for the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials in two events, the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Spink also planned on trying to qualify for the trials in the 200 free, but the meet, scheduled in March, was cancelled. Spink dominated in her first high school swim season when she set two state records in the 100 (49.18) and the 200 free (1:46.18) to claim titles in both. With school and pools being closed, Spink has stayed in shape by running and doing other workout exercises. But it’s hard doing it alone. She’d prefer training with her teammates at the Nation’s Capital Swim Club or laughing at coach Mark Faherty’s jokes. “He’s the funniest person I know,” Spink said. “I miss him everyday.”

Jake Agnos had never been away from baseball this long. But the Battlefield High School graduate had no choice. His first full season as a pro was on hold after he and the other New York Yankees minor-league players had to spend two weeks in quarantine in Tampa, Fla., after one of the players tested positive for the coronavirus. After Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told the minor-leaguers of the first positive test March 15, the players immediately headed to their temporary homes and did the best they could to stay active and entertain themselves. For Agnos and his two roommates, Evan Voliva and Josh Smith, that meant quarantining in a rented double-wide Airbnb. Unable to retrieve their equipment, the trio had to keep themselves busy in other ways. Agnos took up the ukulele, which belonged to Voliva, a former East Carolina University teammate. Agnos had never played a musical instrument before, but through YouTube instructional videos, he became competent enough to impress even himself with his progress. The three also played video games (MLB The Show was the most popular) and posted funny home workout videos to share with others. The self-dubbed Quarantine Workout Challenge included races against ducks and pushing a pickup. The Yankees provided three meals a day for the players and $75 a day for meal money, up from the standard $25 a day. Agnos said his biggest worry wasn’t catching the virus but possibly giving it to others. Agnos grew concerned when he experienced a loss of smell and taste during the quarantine period. He checked with the Yankees’ head trainer and they both agreed allergies explained Agnos’ condition. “The Yankees did a great job of communicating,” said Agnos, who drove back to Haymarket March 28. “And with our age group, we’re in shape. I was not scared of getting it. I didn’t want to pass it along when I got home.”

Honoring

our Armed Forces this Memorial Day Thank you for your service!

Dont’ forget about curb appeal! Here are some tips: • Create a focal point, such as a tree, garden bench, painted front door or statue. • Make sure your house isn’t hidden by overgrown shrubs. • Planters add appeal. Creating impressive arrangements is easy, just remember: Thriller (tall plants like grasses or angelonias), Filler (plants that add bulk. Think coleus, begonias or petunias), Spiller (Cascading plants like bacopas or vines). • Solar lighting along walkways is an inexpensive way to showcase your property.

nurses Honoring our

Brandi Trottman, RN SUBMITTED BY AMANDA CARTER, EMS COMMITTEE CHAIR, RIXEYVILLE

Brandi is an RN and Director of the Emergency Department at Fauquier Health. She has served in more than one position for the ER but in her current position she handles many aspects of patient care. One major way she helps is by assisting the local EMS agencies (Fauquier, Rappahannock, Little Fork, etc.) with information and guidance so that we can provide excellent prehospital care. She has been especially beneficial during the COVID-19 pandemic and we are eternally grateful for everything she has done and continues to do on a daily basis.

Dana Canfield, RN SUBMITTED BY SARAH K. HYDE, HAYMARKET

Dana lives in Haymarket and is an OR nurse at Reston Hospital Center. She is a very caring friend, wife, and mom of three. She works long hours taking care of everyone!

Nilou Miller, RN SUBMITTED BY DENA MENZEL, HAYMARKET

National Nurses Appreciation Week takes place every year from May 6-12. While nurses deserve our thanks and appreciation every day of every year for their hard work and long hours in difficult, stressful situations, their dedication to their patients, and their skill as they heal and save lives, this year it is particularly appropriate to recognize them. They stand between us and the Coronavirus and make incredible personal sacrifices to protect the health of our community. We asked our readers to tell us about their favorite nurse for recognition in this issue. Colleen Carberry, RN

Nilou is a full time RN at Prince William Hospital. She is also working toward completing her Bachelors Degree. She is selfless, caring and hardworking. Due to the Covid-19 crisis, the unit she usually works in has eliminated elective procedures. Rather than have her hours cut or take time off, Nilou has volunteered to "float" to the Covid unit. This means working the 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. shift, and also working most weekends. She does this gratefully and has been happy to help out during a time of great need.

Jannelle Goodenough Murray, RN, BSN SUBMITTED BY KATHLEEN G. GENEVA, HAYMARKET

Janelle works at Fauquier Health in the Family Birthing Center / ICM (Intermediate Care Nursery) as a NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care unit) nurse. For over twenty five years Jannelle has devoted her life to her profession as a NICU nurse. A Letter from Dawn Arruda & Co LLC In 2007, I cut my Real estate teeth with the worse market in history since the great depression. My dad told me to start my career when the market was on a down turn ( believe me I thought he was crazy), but he knew that I would be able to help and change clients lives. He was right! As we enter into this new normal I want you to know that we are changing with the time and setting up safe ways to help you buy and sell homes. All of our safety is top of mind! To do this we are implementing a new form of open houses, they will become virtual with the ability to answer questions on live chats with interested buyers and if they think it is the right home and want to come by during the open house we can have booties, gloves and sanitizers available and create a touch free environment as they move through the home. Staging homes to make them easy to view and walk through with less contact keeps everyone safer. We will be very diligent with the potential buyer clients and ensure that they truly are qualified to purchase the home prior to visits. Technology has always been our strong suit and we are learning more and more how to make it work safer and more efficient for all of our clients. I followed in my father and grandmother’s foot steps because I am a people person and I love what I do to help people through one of life’s biggest decision. I know that we will get back to some kind of NEW normal and I hope that includes holding hands again and giving out hugs and getting together to celebrate all that we are thankful for, but while we are easing back into this new life lets all be thankful that we are here to enjoy all the moments that we can look forward to and the ones we are now embracing with our families. As always we are here for you, if its a call because you need something and don’t know who or where to go for answers, if its a mask that you need so you can get to the store, if its tough to get to the store and your in need, if your not sure what to do about the move you were planning, if you just need someone to hear what you have to say! We are just a Zoom, FaceTime or phone call away! Stay safe, get some Vitamin D everyday that the sun is shining and be thankful for that day!

OVID-19 is not sisters Natasha Lorenzen and Jessica Ross’s first emergency. For years, individually and as a team, the Fauquier County duo has stepped up and served communities in critical need, far away and now more than ever close to home. “What we really saw in Haiti is the interesting difference between us professionally. I am good at the initial stages of an emergency, I handle super stressful, super chaotic, crazy situations, I’m good at that. But after the initial crisis is over, Jess steps in, and that’s when she really shines,” said Natasha, Battalion Chief at Fauquier County Fire and Rescue, of her younger sister, Jessica, RN, Assistant Director of the ICU at Fauquier Health. The sisters, raised from early childhood in Fauquier County, have remained in this area to follow their careers and raise their families. They both started at an EMT course at Fauquier High School. Then they put themselves through paramedic certification and nursing school, respectively, and are both thriving, becoming respected leaders in their fields. While they don’t technically work together now, their paths have crossed often, and their relationship involves great mutual respect for each other professionally. The path that set the girls on this course to careers in the medical and first responder fields began with Natasha. “In high school, I was pretty much not going in a good life direction,” she said. “The school offered a firefighter and EMT program. I took both classes, and I knew as soon as I got involved that was what I wanted to do as a career. To participate in the program, you had to be a volunteer at a fire department to be covered by county insurance, so I joined the New Baltimore Fire Station. When I graduated, I was still too young to be hired anywhere, so I went to paramedic school at GWU. Then I was hired here the year I turned 20.” “I’ve been at the Fire Department almost 20 years, and I’m Battalion Chief now. We’ve

seen it all. Literally everything. People call us when they don’t know what else to do. So we deal with everything from infant deaths, to airlifting victims of horrific car crashes, to delivering babies, to fires, to flooded basements, to cats in trees. Sometimes it’s hard, sometimes it’s really awful, but that’s what we sign up for. I work well in a little bit of chaos, it keeps me energized and motivated. I’m good at it,” said Natasha, who lives with her husband David and children Ryder and Zoe on a sprawling, remote homestead in Stephens City. She continued, “During a big snowstorm, I ran a call to Turnbull for a baby with asthma who couldn’t breathe and was really teetering on the edge. The ambulance had slid off the road and was stuck. I had been working for a couple of days straight by that time, but we headed out in a pickup truck. When we finally got there, we had to treat the baby in the bed of the pickup truck in the snow. We transported her to the hospital in the truck, since the ambulance couldn’t get there, and she was doing really well by the time we arrived.” Jessica followed in Natasha’s footsteps, taking the EMT course and joining the New Baltimore Fire Department as a volunteer during high school. She said, “Then it just grew. I loved it. It kind of pushed me in the

direction of nursing. I worked as an EMT at the Fauquier County Jail for a year while I was in nursing school at Lord Fairfax Community College. I went to Charlottesville to work for a year, then I came back to Fauquier Health and I’ve been here ever since. I love working in Fauquier. Being in a small community, you have more patient interaction and can establish a connection. You really feel like you’re making a difference.” Natasha said, “One thing about Jess that I think a lot of people don’t consider is that in her line of work, caring for her patients medically is only about 50 percent of her job. The other part is caring for the patients’ families. In the ICU, she has patients who are incredibly sick whose families are terrified. They’re stressed and confused. In addition to being extremely competent medically, Jess is very good at making them feel cared for, instilling confidence, and explaining medical situations clearly. The family has to know that she cares about them and about their loved one; that part is extremely important to her.” “It’s hard for me to juggle sometimes being in a leadership position and being at the bedside,” said Jess, who lives in Amissville with her husband Brett and daughter Skylar. “That’s what gives me the reward and joy for everything. That is the highlight for me.”

HELPING IN HAITI

“I had always wanted to do medical mission work,” said Jessica. “When I came

back to Fauquier I heard of this physician, Dr. Kornetsky, who had started a group of physicians and nurses that opened a clinic in Haiti. Right after the earthquake [in 2010], I chased him down the hallway of the hospital. He let me go that first time, and I’ve been going back every year.” After the earthquake, some contaminated water was donated to Haiti by another country. It resulted in a cholera epidemic that ravaged the country. That year, Natasha decided to go also. They formed a group with some other nurses and a paramedic from the fire department, and headed down. Natasha said, “It’s a different type of medical care down there. It’s very limited. You kind of work with what you have, and you’re kind of like a jack of all trades. In the US, you need classes and certifications and degrees to work in the medical field. There, it’s just the opposite. There are no rules. They just assume that because you’re there you know what you’re doing. So I got some experience doing things that I wouldn’t normally be doing here, like suturing up a kid who had split his leg open in a motorcycle crash.” She continued, “In Haiti, I really saw Jess in action. She was truly caring for these kids who came in to us, and reassuring them and their parents, when none of us even spoke the language. We had a baby come in with very bad burns when she spilled boiling water on herself. Jess just took over and took care of her, cleaning the burns, dressing them, and giving her doses

of antibiotics. You know, I have no idea what doses of antibiotics to give to burned pediatric patients. But she was on it. She knew what she was doing and she’s calm and efficient about it. She truly is caring and compassionate.” Jess said, “Natasha has the natural ability to have fun and make friends everywhere she goes. From the first day there, she jumped into the clinic work, but attracted all the kids around the clinic too. She laughed, played, and hiked with them. She befriended members of not just the clinic team but of the Haitian community there, leading to invitations for dinner, events, and games. She always makes it so much more of an adventure.”

CONFRONTING COVID

Today, the Coronavirus is touching both sister’s jobs, putting them both — and their families — at risk. Neither can stay home and quarantine. “We’ve been busy,” said Jess. “People don’t want to come to the hospital because of the virus; they wait until they’re very sick, so some end up coming to us in the ICU. Throughout the whole industry, this is a learning curve for us. It’s new. It’s changing daily, so we’re constantly updating procedures, staying up on new recommendations and studies. Because we’ve been so busy, I’ve been doing more hands-on patient care, which is what I really love to do. I’ve had some long days, but we have a great team. Like nurses everywhere, we’re at risk of exposure. Some are afraid to go home to their families. There are nurses who haven’t seen their kids in a month. It’s definitely a different world.” With the strict visitation policies, it’s hard on the patients and families, too. She said, “Every time I have to tell someone they

can’t see their family member, it gets harder and harder. But we do everything we can. We take our phones in and we FaceTime with the patient’s family while we’re in the room. We reassure the families as much as possible that they can trust us, that their loved one won’t be alone. One of us will be there with them all the time. It’s the hardest thing in this, but it’s so important.” Natasha is busy too, but in a different way. “Interestingly enough, our call volume has actually gone way down. People are really not wanting to go to the hospital when they really don’t need to, and they’re staying home more. Administratively, we have been much, much busier trying to prepare things appropriately and keep up with the CDC and World Health Organization. I literally have 27 tabs open on my computer at any one time, and all of them are about staying up on the latest recommendations. We monitor every single patient that we transport to the hospital. We make sure that nobody’s tested positive, and if they have, we have to go back and take appropriate measures. We are preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.” ❖

We are stronger than we realized HOW OUR COMMUNITY BUSINESSES A R E S T AY I N G S A F E , S T AY I N G O P E N A N D ADAPTING IN THE AGE OF CORONAVIRUS Our local small businesses have never needed our support more than they do now. Hit hard by the effects of the Coronavirus, they are scrambling to hold on — and build back up. And they are thinking outside the box to try to adapt to a new economic landscape, trying new services and products. Even as businesses realize the long road to recovery they have ahead of them, some are discovering strengths and a sense of value they never knew they had. We asked some of our local businesses to tell us how they’re doing, how they’re adapting to save their businesses, and what they see for the future. Their answers have one thing in common. All expressed their appreciation for the support the community has given them, and their desire to use their resources and skills to support the community in turn.

Kim Newman

CUPCAKE HEAVEN, HAYMARKET We’ve always done a good take out business, so while sales are off a little, people have been very supportive of us. I’m very blessed by that. We haven’t had to lay anybody off, although employees are working less hours. People are still coming in, and they’re buying gift cards for their friends. We had a customer buy $250 worth of gift cards and then donate them to local hospital staff. We’re also learning from this experience as we try new ways to adapt. People have been very responsive to the delivery option, so that could continue to be a really good option for us to keep in the future. Social media has been really important during this time because people are engaging more with our posts, and it enables us to let people know that we’re still out here and open.

Bob Leftwich

THE BIKE STOP, WARRENTON We are still open, following health guidelines. If people aren’t comfortable coming into the store, we go out to the street to them. The community has been great in supporting us, and they’re so appreciative that we’ve stayed open. Biking is one of the sports that can be well adapted to social distancing, and it’s also really good for your mental health. In one way, we’ve even picked up a couple sales during this time. A woman called me and said, “I’ve got three men stuck in the house with me, I’m sending them up there to buy bikes from you. I want them the hell out of my house.”

Carter Nevill

CARTER & SPENCE, WARRENTON For us just to survive right now we’ve really had to push ourselves. I think what we’ve all seen is that we’ve been forced toward electronic communication to find ways to adapt. A lot of us have been resisting it; the leap to an online platform is daunting for some small businesses. We’re looking into moving into the Shopify platform, because going forward what we’ve seen is that we do have the ability to reach people without having them walk in our door. What has been the best thing for us has been instagram, which we’ve ramped up recently. We’ve taken it to a more dynamic level, and customers are responding. It’s been generating sales, and it has been a substitute way for us to maintain our ties to our customers and be part of the community. For the first time, we’re really starting to see a return on the creative investment we put into instagram. It will continue to be a good tool for us even when things are back to normal. Our local businesses have really stepped up. My hope is that the future is truly local and our economic resilience and the ability to weather future storms like this is going to build the more we invest in it.

THE OPEN BOOK, WARRENTON

I closed the retail store right away, for the safety of my customers and staff. We’ve always had an online store, but now it’s the primary way I do business. We’re still doing good volume, but it’s a very labor intensive way to operate. The addition of local delivery has enabled me to keep most of my staff on. I can very safely hand off a box of books to them to deliver to doorsteps, so it’s a safe way for them to still work but remain healthy. Social media has remained a primary way to interact with customers, and I just sent out my first newsletter and blog post. We’re working toward a virtual book club on zoom. The community has been extremely supportive. I’ve just been really grateful and amazed. I thought we were going down. We have multiple customers who said they would order a book a month to try to keep us here, and now they’re ordering every week. Our landlord has been very flexible and generous about the rent. There’s a lot to be grateful for. I am very hopeful.

Marti Lawrence

NEEDLES IN THE HAYMARKET, HAYMARKET My sales are definitely down from last year. We’re essentially open by appointment only, and we’re taking orders by phone more than we used to. We’ve also used FaceTime, What’sapp, and Skype to communicate with customers. Our customers are really supporting us by continuing to purchase from us and also recommending us to others by sharing on social media. So we’ve actually been doing some sales across the country, which is really interesting and opens possibilities for the future.

“It worked because the community supported it and the community was patient” Brandie Schaeffer

WARRENTON FARMERS MARKET, WARRENTON Last week was our first drive-thru farmers market. The town council has encouraged me to be as innovative as possible to adapt to the current situation, which gave me the freedom to try it out. The goal was to find a way to balance all the aspects the market brings to the community: access to nutritional food and supporting the local farmers. It worked fantastically; we had 350 customers come through. I think what really clicked for me was when people started to say to me, “Thank you so much, it’s so nice to get out and just see the vendors that we love, even if we just wave from our vehicles.” Everyone was smiling, everybody was patient, everyone was happy. It worked because the community supported it and the community was patient enough. There was no honking, no agitation, everyone was just happy to see each other. We got the same appreciation from the farmers, some of whom sold out their inventory. We encourage pre-ordering for the market as much as possible, to help things keep running smoothly. Some of the farmers are at a disadvantage because they don’t have access to the internet in the rural areas and don’t have websites. But they are happy to take orders by phone. We’ve created a page on the town website with all the vendors’ contact information to facilitate pre-ordering: www.warrentonva.gov/community/farmers_market. As much as possible, we’re going to keep holding the market every week, but it will continue to evolve as the health directives change.

Zan Dial

ELLIE’S PLACE, WARRENTON The community’s desire to support our local front line workers has really helped us. That has taken us from being 90% down to only 60% down. People can donate the cost of a meal ($7.50) toward this purpose, either online or in store. The ticket prints out in our kitchen, and we collect them until we have enough to provide meals for a whole department or a part of an organization, then we make and deliver them. The response has been overwhelming. We’ve done the Police Department, the Fire Department, a couple different hospices and nursing homes. Last week we served the entire staff, top to bottom, all shifts, lunch and dinner, at Fauquier Health. Social media plays a huge role in this; every time we deliver meals we post on Facebook. The more people see it, the more people come on board and donate. Sharing the posts makes it spread, and it becomes a snowball effect.

DETAILS FOR THE HOME, HAYMARKET Our local customers are definitely supporting us, usually using in store or curbside pickup or our free local delivery service. But this crisis showed me how important an online presence and online sales capability are. It’s kind of forced me to develop a website and an online store, which we launched three weeks ago, and it’s just awesome. Every day we add more items to the site, and this will continue to be useful after the crisis has passed.

Amber and Andrea Ferrero

CAFE TORINO, WARRENTON We’ve had to make some changes to continue to operate, including cutting our hours, adjusting our menu and creating some new meal ideas. We’ve also started cooking tutorials on our Facebook page. The community has responded really well — the phone doesn’t stop ringing, and sometimes we have a line of cars waiting for pickup. Many people and groups in the community have been generously donating money for meals for local first responders and medical staff. We have had to lay off three of our employees, so we are operating with the two of us and one employee. We are also doing in two hours what we usually do in six. It’s a lot of work and it’s very intense, but we’ve learned that we are able to pull it off. We are stronger than we realized. Everyone has really been super supportive of us, and that makes us really happy. We’re glad to be here for the community.

Pablo Teodoro

GREAT HARVEST BREAD COMPANY, WARRENTON Initially at the start of this quarantine, we had a sharp drop in patronage, and then the removal of our inside seating. It looked pretty grim. But then, on March 17 at 10 a.m., I had an epiphany. A customer in my store was venting to me about the scarcity of bread due to people hoarding it, and the grocery store shelves were empty. It really came home to me then, the concept that I can make bread in almost unlimited quantities, and our community needed it. The next day I made 500 loaves of bread. After some phone calls and Facebook posts, we received the first

Tony Tedeschi

PIEDMONT PRESS, WARRENTON Our sales are down about 58% since the quarantine went into effect. Major events like horse shows, conferences, trade shows, educational programs, sporting events, etc. which need items printed have all been postponed or canceled. We have adapted our shop to produce Safe Shields, clear protective guards for grocery stores and other establishments where person to person contact is essential to conduct business. They have been selling well, with customers as far as Richmond. We are keeping our employees on at 80% of their regular hours (32 per week) while Holly and I are not taking paychecks. We appreciate the sacrifice our staff members have made. My heart goes out to every person trying to run a business and keep their employees paid, for everyone on the front line in the fight against Coronavirus, and to those families that have lost loved ones.

of many donations to be used for baking for the food bank. The concept grew, and with generous donations we are now making $3,000-$4,000 of bread a week for six area food banks, which accounts for at least a third of our production. Almost Eight Years Later, The Struggling Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery Hopes for State Support STORY BY JARED FORETEK | PHOTOS BY KARA THORPE

T

o the naked eye, there’s no sign of many of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church cemetery’s roughly 170 graves, just slight dips and mounds in the terrain behind a fire-damaged church building off Lee Highway in Gainesville. Deacon Henry Peterson says most of the unmarked plots saw burials in the 1880s; those interred there would have been members of the church or local community. “We know where they are,” he says, walking through the almost two-acre graveyard. After the Civil War, a local farm owner went bankrupt and sold the land to African Americans who had worked or been enslaved there. The church was built in 1877 and moved to its current location in 1882. One of the oldest post-war free black settlements in the state grew around it, and the cemetery has been burying its dead ever since. The oldest headstone dates to 1885, when almost all burial grounds in the state were segregated. Under legislation moving through the Virginia General Assembly, cemeteries like this, where African Americans have been buried since the 1800s, would qualify for the first time for maintenance grants from the state. At $5 a year per headstone for anyone born before 1900, the money wouldn’t come close to what the church spends to maintain the cemetery, but Peterson said it will take anything it can get. The legislation is half of a two-pronged approach aimed at assisting historic black cemeteries. As part of Gov. Ralph Northam’s “Historic Justice and Equity” initiative, his proposed budget would also dedicate $250,000 toward maintenance of historic African American cemeteries. The state would also hire a historic preservationist focused on historic burial grounds. To help defray the cost, Northam is proposing ending an $83,000 annual allocation to the United Daughters of the

Confederacy for upkeep on Confederate graves. For a long time, the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church handled the land’s upkeep on its own. Another deacon worked regularly with a volunteer and a lawnmower to cut the grass, trim around the headstones and clear any debris. But the deacon is now 92 years old, and about two years ago the church started hiring professional groundskeeping help at a cost of $3,000 a year. Money’s tight, so the church sold the lawnmower to help pay for the upkeep. The church itself no longer meets at the Lee Highway building. A 2012 fire forced them to move. They’ve been eying a return for the 130 members, but the cost to rebuild has thus far been too much. The church pulled together enough from a GoFundMe campaign, internal fundraising and insurance money to

complete the first phase of the rebuild and get the property’s water infrastructure up to county code, but much of the building still sits without a roof, open to the elements. There’s also a new expense: rent for the temporary space, and with an aging membership largely relying on fixed incomes, tithes go only so far. “We’re nowhere close to coming back here. We started the first phase, but that has taken almost all of the money we have,” said Velma Pridemore, a church trustee. “Every night I go to bed; every morning I get up and I pray ‘Lord, give me something to get some money for my church.’” In that sense, any assistance with cemetery upkeep would help, and Peterson said he was excited to hear about the governor’s proposal. The church hopes its cemetery would qualify, having served a historically significant community dating to the 19th century. Down the line, after the church has been rebuilt, leadership hopes to restore all the headstones that are being overgrown. For Pridemore, the graves at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church — some belonging to ancestors of current members — represent the land’s significance to the African American community in the area and serve an educational purpose for some of the church’s younger members. “I want to be a part of preserving our history,” Pridemore said. “You want your sixth, seventh, eighth generations to know where they came from.” ❖

n the midst of treatment for breast cancer, Amy Hindman simply wanted to find a scarf or head cover that felt healing and organic to the body while beautiful and stylish to the eye. A young mom, she wanted to still feel feminine and not look “sick.” Since she was undergoing radiation, and her skin was sensitive, she was seeking something soft and gentle to wear. The only problem was... she was coming up empty. “I just knew there had to be better options,” she said, and this thought stayed in the back of her mind. Hindman was still reeling from her medical journey and beginning to analyze choices for her family. Her view had changed, and forced her to take a fresh look at the dangerous toxins in readily available products like makeup, cleaners, and clothing. But she also saw God’s abundance all around her and knew that to heal she needed to, “make something beautiful out of this mess.”

Two years into remission, Hindman was employed with the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). She researched the toxins that threaten us and how chemicals and medicine come impact our everyday life. Although her belief that doctors are angels still remained, the epiphany was that real healing comes from our own unique and beautiful bodies and the choices we make in how we care for ourselves. When Hindman learned about ASCO”s ‘Passion Grant,’ she applied and was approved. This program provides finances to the employee to pursue personal interests and life-enriching activities. She had begun to form her plan to create organic scarves for younger cancer warriors, and now she moved into sourcing fabric and experimenting with natural dyes. “This was the beginning,” she says. A weeklong intensive course at Penland School of Craft in North Carolina taught her to use synthetic dyes and inks to create silk scarves for cancer patients at Duke Cancer Center. While she was there, she discovered Penland’s natural dye studio, truly igniting her passion for using natural elements over synthetic color in her own burgeoning dye studio. When she returned home, the practicing began. She pored through books and experimented for two years until she felt she had honed her craft. In 2017, Hindman created Saint Virginia Textiles to give others the opportunity to purchase her handcrafted, natural dyed,

46

{ MAY 2020 |

organic cotton products with the focus on the feel she was looking for during her hard times… healing. “At Saint Virginia, we make healing textiles to give you a better choice, an easier choice, and a more beautiful choice,” Hindman says. The small batch, artisan textiles are created with intention, with Hindman choosing carefully where she sources her fabric and how she applies her life philosophies to each design. Her production uses healthier practices, resulting in sustainable, beautiful, and incredibly healing textiles. Natural dyes can come from many sources… flowers, insects, plants, onion skins, roots. “It’s a time-intensive labor of love,” says Hindman of using this centuriesold technique. Along with the plants and flowers Hindman grows in her garden for the purpose of creating her natural textiles, her parents frequently bring her flowers they’ve grown, and she even has a partnership with a local flower company to take their floral waste and use it for her textiles. All of it contributes to a craft that is sustainable with no waste. Even onion skins that are used for dye get composted and the cycle continues. “It’s a great way to close the loop on manufacturing,” she says, emphasizing that she is always seeking more partners to join her efforts. The process for creating naturally dyed textiles is not for the weak. When the specially sourced fabric is delivered, Hindman first scours it to be sure it’s pure and clean, and can take the dye. Then it is soaked in a nontoxic salt solution which prepares it for color, and then the dye is added. Marigolds are Hindman’s favorite choice, as they also make her home studio smell delightful. Of course her choices are also season dependent; dry root powders and leaves are used in the fall while more colorful varieties grow during warmer months. Saint Virginia has continued to grow, mostly from online sales and word of mouth. Many of Hindman’s customers purchase a scarf for recently diagnosed friends or for themselves. Men buy the gorgeous creations for loved ones, and interior designers purchase them when seeking a unique textile to incorporate into their designs. A glance at her Saint Virginia’s online shop will reveal hues of emerald green and bold blues next to muted neutrals with gold and pewter tones and then blush pinks and

“Saint Virginia is a reflection of who I am and my own journey toward healing” maroons. One organic cotton oversized scarf is called Winter Berries; it was dyed with foraged Virginia black walnut, logwood, and then bundle dyed with cochineal (an insect) and onion skins. Hindman can most often be found in her home studio where her daughters, 10-year-old Neville Jane, and 6-year-old Beatrice, pop in to experiment with their own creations. Her diagnosis truly shifted her life and family, and she expresses gratitude for being healed and alive while encouraging others to find healthier choices for their body. “Saint Virginia is a reflection of who I am and my own journey toward healing,” she says, and she hopes to inspire others to heal. You can find Saint Virginia Textiles on saintvirginia.com and at local markets. ❖

eorge Wilson and Karla Eisen have an agricultural repertoire comprised of growing winery-quality grapes and raising bees to harvest and sell along with artisanal honey through their company, The Backyard Farm. And they do this right in the heart of Gainesville. Specialized farming has been a large part of George’s life. He was raised in Herndon when it was a farming town which gave him an appreciation of farming and a love of the outdoors. After a 25-year career as a professional horseman, he discovered wine grapes and went on to spend the next 20 years as a winegrower specializing in starting new vineyards and wineries. Chances are you’ve enjoyed a glass of Virginia wine made from grapes he planted.

Karla started keeping bees as a hobby in 2006. Her pastime quickly grew into a passion; she not only enjoyed it but was very good at it. As she grew her bees and sold them to others, she realized she wound up with more than she started with, a testament to her skill in raising and growing healthy bee populations. Today she is one of fewer than 200 master beekeepers to be certified by the Eastern Apicultural Society, the largest beekeeping educational organization, as well as a backyard bee educator and part of the Prince William Regional Beekeepers Association. With George’s immense agricultural knowhow and Karla’s passion, they started The Backyard Farm. In the last fourteen years, they’ve been awarded dozens of ribbons for honey and hive products at the

Prince William County Fair Honey Show, the Arlington County Fair and The Virginia State Fair Honey Show. And in 2014, the Backyard Farm won “Best Tasting Honey in the East” at the Eastern Apicultural Society Honey Show. George and Karla have seven bee yards that produce wildflower honey that they sell to local retailers like Eden’s Natural Marketplace and Champaka Thai Massage in Gainesville, Tranquility Day Spa in Haymarket, and Farm Station Café in Vint Hill, to name just a few. The Wilsons purposely limit their customer base to ensure they can provide the very best quality honey year-round.

How Backyard Honey is Harvested

Bees begin collecting nectar in early spring, but it isn’t turned into honey until what’s called the early harvest, typically late May and frequently even June. Once the honey is extracted from the hives, it is put into five-gallon buckets. George then begins overseeing the bottling and labeling process until the product is ready and delivered to your favorite local retailers.

When Nature Calls

Bees forage in an approximate twomile radius of their hives and feast on wildflowers. Some of the biggest challenges for bees and the honey making process are climate change and the loss of forage. As Northern Virginia experiences

“Beekeeping is farming for intellectuals; honeybees engage your body, mind, and spirit.” vast weather changes throughout the winter and spring, the bees adjust their schedule – you can’t rush nature! And it might surprise you to learn that bears aren’t the only big fans of honey; skunks and racoons love the stuff and try frequently to steal a taste. And mice look for warm beehives to build a winter nest in. Therefore, George and Karla have their hives protected with an electric fence. Additionally, a pervasive pest, and threat to the bees, is the varroa destructor mite. Like the roundly despised stink bug, this invasive species from Asia has made itself at home here in Northern Virginia, and, to a large degree, across the country. Bees are sensitive creatures and need to be handled with care. A common misconception about bees is that they like to sting; however, honeybees are not aggressive in nature, just protective and sting only when they feel threatened. They are sensitive to disruption, especially if they have not had ample food. Next time you admire the early blooms of spring, know

that they are feeding your local bees to make delicious honey! According to George, “Beekeeping is farming for intellectuals; honeybees engage your body, mind, and spirit.” Occasionally bees need some medical care, and as one might imagine, administering medicine can be tricky. It is administered through sugar water carefully dribbled into the hive. George and Karla understand their bees’ behavior and when they might need extra TLC. What’s Karla’s secret to backyard beekeeping success? “Your best chance of success with bees,” she says, “is to become part of the beekeeping community.” As for George, he’s still involved with wine grapes, but not to the degree he once was, as the business of selling bees and producing honey has been in high demand. ❖ For more information on the Backyard Farm, visit TheBackyardFarm.net. Legislature delays minimum wage hike

In an unusual session held in a setting to allow for social distancing among legislators on April 23, the General Assembly adopted measures delaying the increase in the state's minimum wage to $9.50 from January to May 2021. The 100-member House of Delegates met outdoors under a large tent on the grounds of the State Capitol. The 40-member Senate met a few miles away inside a large room at the Science Museum of Virginia. Legislators sat at tables set up about 6 feet apart to prevent the possible spread of the coronavirus. Many delegates wore face masks, but often removed them when speaking. Some delegates elected to wear gloves, though that was not the majority. Sen. George Barker, D-Fairfax, wore a mask and sat inside a plexiglass structure that lawmakers jokingly called “the cage.” Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax kept his face mask on while at the podium, though Filler-Corn opted not to. Lawmakers grappled at length with issues related to the budget, which had to be amended in response to the economic blow of COVID-19. Northam suggested 181 total amendments to the budget bills. The governor called for a freeze on many budget items and said that new circumstances required lawmakers to revisit initiatives such as early childhood education, more affordable college tuition, and pay increases for public employees and teachers.
