Local Author Pens Book for Children Dealing with Grief
Filled with inspiration, the girls rushed home. Heather wrote down everything that had flooded her head and the girls drew pictures and colored with their mom. “All afternoon I felt a sense of peace because I do believe he was with us that day,” she laments. “And from that day on, we began to see dragonflies everywhere, in places you wouldn’t even expect. It still gives me goosebumps!” Heather’s mom was also comforted by the story. Obviously, she, too, was devastated by her husband’s loss. Yet, she felt that the pictures and words that her daughter and granddaughters produced really helped her and she encouraged her daughter, Heather, to get the book published. She, too, saw dragonflies everywhere she went! Warrenton author, Heather Fitzpatrick, was dealing with the grief of losing her father to cancer. He was only 56 and an amateur writer having completed a novel and a children’s book while only starting a book on his experiences fighting cancer. Heather’s father never got to see his dream of having any of his books published. Her two young daughters did not understand her immense sadness so, on the afternoon of his passing, Heather took the girls for a walk. While walking with her daughters, they came across a dragonfly. At that moment, Heather had a remarkable spiritual experience. It was like her dad was feeding a story to her to help her and his granddaughters through their troubling time. To this day, she describes the experience with a sense of excitement and awe. “Legend has it that dragonflies were given an extra set of wings so that angels could ride on their back. Dragonflies are a winged masterpiece, and, whenever you see one, you can be certain that an angel has come down from heaven to visit you.” Heather and her daughters believe that the dragonfly they saw must be their father/grandfather and feel that when a dragonfly nears, it is a very special angel visiting them. 6
In April, 2008, Heather’s mother passed away so Heather began the process of getting her book published last July. Just released, The Day I saw a Dragonfly describes a certain sort of love. The kind that one keeps after someone has passed, a knowing sort of love that rides on the wings of dragonflies and recalls the softest winds of memory and celebration. Especially tender to young readers that have suffered the death of a family member or a beloved pet, this narrative celebrates life, enchantment, and the special corners of heaven. Her book not only helped the Fitzpatrick family help their youngsters deal with death, but is beginning to help others too now that the book is available for sale. The Day I saw a Dragonfly is available locally at Borders and Dharma & Leopolds in Warrenton and I’m Still Me, located on Rt. 29 in New Baltimore.

Fauquier Wine Trail B y J e n n i fe r H e y n s
Not long ago Fauquier County was simply referred to as “farm country” or even “horse country”, but we’re quickly earning the reputation of “wine country” and rightly so. At present 16 wineries dot our 651-square mile map, with two more opening up in 2009-2010 and at least one more in the planning stages. For local wine lovers, having so many unique vineyards and wineries close by is an enormous treat. By having so many wineries in one community, though, makes Fauquier County a “tourism destination”, says Catherine Payne, Tourism Coordinator for the Fauquier County Department of Economic Development, which is a benefit to the county itself as well as to all of its residents. In recognizing what a boon it is to the financial well-being of the county to have such an attraction, Payne began trying to open a dialogue with as many county winery owners as possible to see if they could collaborate on projects that would draw more attention to 10
Fauquier County. “ The wineries are one of the biggest and most popular tourist sectors for us right now,” declares Payne, “I began meeting with the owners about a year and a half ago to see if we could get them all together and collaborate on things like advertising.” What they have developed is a collaborative marketing unit, employing both the county and winery owners, to encourage Fauquier tourism. The program, for lack of a better term, is called the Fauquier Wine Trail (FWT). The county’s tourism site (www. visitFauquier.com) has a page designed just for the FWT and has worked with them to procure group advertising throughout northern Virginia. “We consider northern Virginia Wine Continued on page 12 Warrenton Lifestyle

to be a 4-million-person marketing opportunity,” says Payne, “That’s a lot of people and it’s where most of the winery visitors are coming from.” According to Payne, the idea is to market the FWT as a mini-vacation destination, encouraging residents from around the region to visit multiple wineries. One of the first projects, which was initiated by the winery owners, was to collaborate on a rack card. The card was designed with a map of Fauquier County showing winery locations on one side and a list of the wineries with their contact information on the reverse. The card 12
is available at each of the wineries and with the county in the hopes that local residents and tourists will grab one and keep it with them as a reference as they tour the countryside. One of the things that makes this alliance so refreshing is that there is no defined leadership, it is a true partnership between all of the parties involved, but there are other aspects that make the FWT attractive to winery owners. “The Fauquier Wine Trail is unique because it is a private-public partnership,” explains Brian Roeder, owner of Barrel Oak Winery, “all of the
Fauquier County wineries are included in all of the wine trail’s efforts through the resources available to the county, but the extent to which they take advantage is up to them.” Roeder admits that even before he and his wife, Sharon, broke ground on their winery, which opened to the public just last spring, they knew that they would want to be heavily involved in the county and would rely on collaborations like the one now existing between the county and local wineries. “Because of our location and high Wine Continued on page 14 Warrenton Lifestyle

level of visibility, we feel compelled to be involved in these types of discussions,” says Roeder. Department of Economic Development personnel and winery owners meet every few months to see what’s going on and keep open communications between everyone involved, says Payne. Boxwood Winery “All of the winery owners encourage collaborative action to raise the level of success of all of the wineries here, as long as it makes sense and is beneficial to all,” rationalized Roeder, who has volunteered his spacious winery for FWT meetings. If you’re wondering if such a collaboration can work with so many wineries competing for local tourists on any given weekend, rest assured they truly believe that they each have singular features to attract a certain type of guest and that there’s enough business to keep each of them successful. “All of the wineries are so unique, Barrel Oak Winery and offer such different experiences, it Photos provided by Fauquier County Economic never gets boring,” divulges Payne. “An Above photo by Holly Tedeschi Development Department example, Three Fox Vineyards has a large meadow which runs along Crooked Run creek. In addition to working together to advertise the FWT Even as the county is setting their sites on regional and put together the FWT rack card, the county and expansion, the wineries are starting to think on a more winery owners are working on shared participation for global scale. community events. Over the next month, for example, “We would really like,” admits Roeder, “to pull ourselves the county and winery owners will be participating in the together and focus on quality in our wines and as a group go Warrenton Wine & Arts Festival, the Fauquier-Habitat in front of national and international competitions and show for Humanity’s Wine & Crafts Fair and Fauquier County’s the world our destination.” th 250 Anniversary Celebration. Roeder truly believes that the more attention the While it’s been difficult for the county to determine wineries can garner for themselves, as a group, the more exactly how beneficial having so many wineries in the area successful the entire area will be. Not only can the success of has been in terms of revenue over the past couple of years, the wineries bring large numbers of tourists into the county they conducted a survey which indicated that in 2007 just to spend their dollars on local businesses and entertainment, half of the wineries in Fauquier grossed over $5.5 million. but it can also encourage more people to establish even more unique wineries in Fauquier County. Naturally, when the revenue enjoyed by the wineries swells, so does that of other county business people. Because of the vineyards needed to establish a successful “When we market the wineries,” explains Payne, “we do winery, wineries are considered agriculture, which is in so in the hopes that it’s going to be a big draw to bring people keeping with the environmental culture of Fauquier County. into the county who will stay at our bed and breakfasts or Only wineries have much more revenue potential coupled hotels, eat at local restaurants and frequent our shops as well with the increased tourist appeal. “Having more wineries in the county helps to keep as visiting the wineries.” Although it’s still a fairly young partnership and the the countryside beautiful,” says Roeder, “sustaining the county is already considering casting a wider net, to include community’s agriculture and staving off major development.” 14

Oh Baby! Tales of New Beginnings Over the years, the Fauquier Health obstetricians have delivered a lot of babies, which means they have seen just about everything — from patients who thought they were infertile and ended up getting pregnant, to patients who couldn’t make it to the hospital and ended up delivering in the parking lot. Here are a few of our favorite anecdotes from the wonderful obstetricians who deliver our bundles of joy. All the Babies in the Womb, Put Your Hands Up - From Thomas Myers, M.D. “We once had a patient who was getting ready to deliver, but the baby kept pushing its arm out ahead of time. Luckily, this was the mother’s third child, so her pelvis was large enough for me to keep manipulating the arm back up inside. The mother ended up delivering vaginally, but the baby came out with her hand pressed against the side of her face. The mom later told me that for the first year of the baby’s life, the baby slept with her arm stretched above her head.”
One Big Happy Family From Thomas Myers, MD “One of the OB nurses and I were enjoying our typical bantering while we were waiting for a mother to push. We were relaxed and teasing each other, and then all of a sudden the husband looked at us and asked, ‘How long have you two been married?’ That’s the kind of atmosphere that exists on labor and delivery — everybody just works well together. Fauquier Hospital has a nice birthing unit and I always make a point of saying that the OB nurses play really well in the sandbox.”
The Energizer OB - From Lorraine Chun, M.D. “I once delivered 14 babies in a 12-hour period. I was literally running from room to room delivering babies. I’d deliver one baby, run to the next room, deliver the next baby, run back to the first room, run to the next room... It was exhausting.” April Fools! - From Thomas Myers, M.D. “On April 1, about 18 years ago — this was before we routinely did ultrasound — I had a patient who was very tall and thin. She measured normally, but hid her pregnancy well. When she delivered, I thought the baby seemed awfully small, so I felt the mother’s abdomen and said, ‘Oh my God, there’s another one!’ The nurses said, ‘Yeah, right, April Fools!’ But I said, ‘I’m not kidding, she’s having another baby.’ The mother had no idea; the father nearly fainted on me, and I ended up delivering a set of undiagnosed twins on April Fools’ Day.” A Baker’s Dozen From Lorraine Chun, M.D. “I once had a patient who always wanted a dozen children. I delivered her 12th child, but my partner actually delivered another one after that, so this woman ended up having 13 kids. It was amazing.”
18
Those Dynamic Duos - From Jeffrey Bell, M.D. “I have two patients who are identical twin sisters, and I delivered identical twin girls for each of them. Coincidentally, one of the sets of baby twins weighed the exact same weight that the twin mothers weighed back when they were born. I have also delivered babies for several mothers and daughters who were pregnant simultaneously.”
Down for the Count - From Rene Carisio-Farber, M.D. “One time, as I was starting to administer an epidural for a patient, the husband was helping by holding his wife up. As I was preparing the needle, I noticed out of the corner of my eye that the wife was shaking, but when I looked up, I realized it was the husband that was shaking. As soon as he saw the needle go in, he passed out cold. His mother was there too, but she had to tend to him because he was sprawled out on the floor.” The Devine Delivery - From Thomas Myers, M.D. “A Fauquier Health nurse was coming in for prenatal care and she brought her 4-year-old daughter with her so that her husband could pick her up. While they were waiting in the parking lot, I was at the back door and I noticed them, so I waved. The mother then told the girl, ‘That’s the man who brought you into the world.’ And the girl asked, ‘Is he God?’ ” Warrenton Lifestyle

Review
Joe David is a member of the National Press Club in Washington and has authored countless articles (many
of
food
and
cooking
schools) and four books; he has also reported on NPR’s The Best of our Knowledge. To support his writings he has taught school and worked in many careers including public relations, marketing and magazine advertising.
GOURMET Getaways Offers Culinary Vacations
Local author’s book includes profiles of four area places to learn to cook. Warrenton author and gourmand, Joe David, has a food fetish. Born out of his father’s quest to satisfy his palate while keeping peace at home, Joe David was the recipient of many fine dining experiences in Chicago while growing up. Today, he is a well-published author of numerous articles on American and international cuisine. Joe spent a year traveling the U.S., interviewing chefs and acquainting himself with popular resorts and cooking schools which are growing in popularity. Gourmet Getaways is written for recreational cooks and foodies interested in learning new culinary techniques from the pros. The book contains, not just information about the culinary schools, but also, information about the chefs, their cooking tips, their favorite recipes, and much, much more. In his book, Gourmet Getaways, we are taken on a journey through 50 of our nation’s finest cooking school programs including four within a short drive of our neighborhood. While the four culinary vacations in Virginia mentioned in the book have distinctly unique cooking styles, author David focuses on seasonal, made-in-Virginia light foods, suitable for healthy dieting – with only one exception.
Inn of Little Washington (Washington, VA) – where Chef Patrick O’Connell teaches students how to cook like an angel, by always striving for perfection, using the very best as a benchmark. Briar Patch Bed and Breakfast (Middleburg, VA) – where Chef Becky Croft wickedly fills you with all those wonderful foods, which weight-watchers avoid by teaching you how to go for flavor, at the cost to your waist. Inn at Meander Plantation (Locust Dale, VA) – where Chef David Scales’ specialty is creating foods that brighten the natural flavors of the food – with a Southern touch! Clifton Inn (Charlottesville, VA) – where Chef Dean Maupin adapts his program to class requests with an elegant focus on subtly fused world flavors. Joe David will be available to autograph his book Gourmet Getaways, at Borders on April 4th between noon and 3:00 pm. You can also visit him on the web at www.gourmetgetaway.us .
The kitchen at the Inn at Little Washington has been referred to as the most beautiful in the world. 20

Reflections On Life
Teens Can Change the World

addiction,
What wonderful progress the world has made over the centuries and so much of it is due to you teenagers who, at an early stage in life, took forward steps toward civilization! Deeds and thoughts of hate are as old as the mind of man, but even in ancient times young men and woman of your age assumed responsibilities for doing good. When Alexander the Great was 16 years old, his father Apriled against Byzantium, leaving the running of the entire government in his hands. History tells us that Alexander assumed this leadership in a most adult manner, training himself for his many later accomplishments. On the other side of the world, Confuscius had already impressed his countrymen with his sincerity and ability and, by the time he was 19, had been appointed district inspector of agriculture. Many of us “oldsters” are still studying the law of the vibration of the pendulum, but Galileo discovered this rule of nature when he ws only 18. If you’re a bit younger than this, remember that William Cullen Bryant was just 13 when he wielded a strong political sledge hammer by writing the terse and vigorous poem, “The Embargo.” Napoleon was wearing the uniform of a sub-lieutenant in the French army when 16. What is this strength and ability you in your teens possess which comes out to rock the world from generation to generation? What do we find as we examine the lives of people like George Washington (who was surveying tracts of land with great accuracy when 16), Alexander Hamilton (at 18 had written and published a series of papers in defense of the rights of the colonies), and John D. Rockefeller (a partner at 19 in a firm of commission merchants)? George Washington liked to copy
maxims from a favorite book he owned. He committed these to memory and applied them to his daily living, creating the efficient administrator we know as the “Father of Our Country.” Rockefeller, when a young man, singled out the items he wanted to remember and repeated them over and over to himself. The formation of this habit helped to give him the business astuteness which served him so ably in later life. Galileo, early in life, started asking, “Why? Why? Why?” and in constantly asking himself questions, began to wonder why the church pendulums swung at a particular rate. Napoleon is visualized as being a swashbuckling commanding general active on the field of battle but when a boy, he buried himself in books and devoted himself to incessant work. What is this trait which was common among these famous people while they were in their teens and even younger? If anything stood out, it seemed to be their ability to concentrate on a specific goal and to work diligently toward achieving it. James Montgomery Flagg as a youngster drew and drew and drew and published his first drawing in a magazine when he was 14. At 16 he was a regular illustrator for “Judge” and “Life.” “Believe It or Not” Robert Ripley also had his illustrations published at the same age. After constant practice, Sarah Bernhardt made her first appearance on the stage of the Comedie Francaise at the age of 17. Jenny Lind, who sang many hours a day, made her operatic debut when she was 18. At the age of 17, Joan of Arc obtained an audience with Charles the Dauphin, and convinced him that she was Teens Continued on page 26 Warrenton Lifestyle

John Calvin received an appointment to the curacy of St. Martin de Martheville when 18 years old and, when 19, began preaching the reformed doctrine. The dedicated labor leader Samuel Gompers took an active part in organizing work of the Cigar Makers International Union when he was 15.
regularly for the 1964 Olympic skiing games by running two miles daily, skiing whenever possible during daylight hours and doing calisthenics each evening. After exhausting research, Pat Bath, 18, and Arnold Lentnek, 17, both of New York City, came up with a theory supported by scientific evidence that cancer is caused by a breakdown of cell growth. The International Congress of Nutrition, attended by 2,500 scientists, gave them high praise. Yes, the world is indebted to the teens! The list goes on endlessly -- P.T. Barnum, editor of a Danbury newspaper at 19;
Yours is a wonderful age! Not for looking forward to the future but for doing things now as present citizens of your community and nation.
Do the teens of the past have a corner on furthering the progress of the world? The more recent teen-age activities show differently. In 1929 Eagle Scout Paul Siple accompanied Admiral Richard E. Byrd on his first expedition to the South Pole. He became Dr. Paul Siple, polar scientist, a man who showed his ability as a teenager. Kent Goering, also representing the Boy Scouts of America, spent 97 days in Greenland in 1960 as a Junior Scientist at U.S. Army Camp Century. David Fass, at 18, was the owner and operator of the American Radio News Service in New York City whose 16 correspondents (mostly in their teens) supplied radio stations with first hand accounts of big events. Kay Milim, a 17-year old from Albuquerque, New Mexico, was the recipient of a special certificate from the Smithsonian Institute for her skill in tracking satellites. A thriving world-wide salt water taffy business was conducted by tycoon Gordon Cook of Loveland, Colorado when he was 16 years old. Here, again, appears that trait you teens have of concentrating on one specific goal and working diligently towards it. Patsy Willard, while a teenager, practiced six hours a day for four years before becoming a member of a two-woman Olympic diving team. National Slalom Champion Jimmy Heuga, at 18, trained 26

Misfortunes and handicaps appear to stimulate you rather than hinder your progress! Napoleon’’s father died when he was only 16, at which time he saved from his earnings to help is mother. Braille became blind when he was just three years old yet, despite this, he developed a proficiency in music and was teaching the blind in Paris at the age of 19. A salute also to blind Bob Greenberg, who at 17 handled the detailed job of disc jockey on Station WEAW, Evanston, IL, by typing his commercials in braille, memorizing the sports reports and by ad-libbing his interviews. Yours is a wonderful age! Not for looking forward to the future but for doing things now as present citizens of your community and nation. You have done so much to help us as we learn to better ourselves, and we are looking for worthwhile accomplishments from even more of you. Keep up the good work! Warrenton Lifestyle

time with his family at places like the Taste Freeze and McDonald’s. He felt Warrenton was missing a place where parents could bring their children to make memories and pass those memories down through the generations. The two had many ideas from a 1950’s-esqe diner to a soda pop shop, but in 1999 a curious pink, blue and white trailer arrived in Waterloo Shopping Center. The original Carousel was an 18’ x 8’ trailer positioned caddy-corner in the parking lot facing Shirley Avenue. Obviously tiny, the building itself allowed for 4-5 employees at one time to take orders, create, and serve the customers in 4’ x 6’ work area. windows. The area in front of the building was empty parking spaces with tables for customers to sit and enjoy their ice cream while simultaneously watching their children play. As Carousel began to grow with age, so did the owner’s ideas for a new and improved building. Bachetti and Norskog put their heads together to create a building that was functional for their employees, efficient for their customers and still resembled the original building. The pair put their ideas on paper and Norskog sat down with draft paper and began to sketch grid by grid until they were both satisfied. Once the particulars were finalized and ordered it was just a matter of getting the new Carousel into town. As the story goes, the new building was brought down Interstate 95 in two sections on tractor

trailers. As the trucks were nearing the exit they were brought to a stop right before a bridge, because the sections of the new building would not make it under the bridge. The trucks had to lower their trailers, and let the air out of all of the tires in order to clear the bridge overhead. The new building is 30’ x 18’ more than twice the size of the original, which gives the employees more room to work and the ability to add more staff during busier hours. An additional service window (The Cone Line) was added to increase the speed in which customers are served and that means shorter lines! The classic pink, blue and white color scheme was kept as well as the carousel horse. The building has a lot of windows. Norskog offers, “It was important to us to have big windows, it allows customers to see the care and quality we put into our food.”
A patio upgrade was also necessary to add to the ambiance and increase the safety of the customers and their children. The patio is fenced-in at the front, blocking children access to the road, allowing the kids the opportunity to run around and play with some safety. The water fountain was a fun addition, and over the years the water has been dyed for specific holidays such as orange for Halloween. Music, bubbles, and Wi-fi internet access have also been incorporated to help customers to enjoy their experience. What makes Carousel stand out is their dedication to originality. Bachetti and Norskog created their one-of-a-kind ice cream sanctuary but they haven’t stopped there. They have also come up with unique ice cream creations like the Waterloo, named after the street Carousel is located on. A Waterloo is half milkshake and half sundae.
Warrenton Lifestyle
Bachetti says, “Customers always seemed to have a hard time choosing between a sundae or a milkshake, so we found a way to combine them!” The quality of their food is also special in that their fruits are all bought locally from stores, the farmer’s market, and friends gardens to ensure that they are pleasantly fresh. They also hand toast fresh coconut and candy their own walnuts with a special recipe. If the fruit toppings aren’t impressive enough, the hot dogs and French fries that are served are equally original. A select panel of Carousel enthusiasts were asked to taste well over 20 sizes and types of hot dogs to finally select the perfect one. The hot dogs served Carousel Continued on page 36

The Inside ‘Scoop’ • Carousel extends its evening hours when school is out for the summer. • Rumor has it that they may soon be open on Mondays. • New item they are working on: Sherbert. • Tip: Best time to come is at opening or right before dinner. • Best bargain: Lunch special – hot dog, fries and a drink for $5.00. • Most popular menu item: The Waterloo. • Pup cups are available for your dog with a purchase. Carousel serves over 300 ice cream loving dogs per week. • Number One Topping: Oreos. Carousel used over 68,000 Oreo cookies last year. Stacked end to end, they would have been several hundred feet taller than the Empire State Building. • Carousel employees picked up an estimated 6,300 cherry stems off of the patio that had been discarded by customers. • Tip: On Wednesdays only, Carousel serves a batter dipped hot dog that is incredible!

are from a small family owned deli that makes the hot dogs at a special length and weight unique to Carousels specifications. The boardwalk French fries were also carefully selected to not resemble taste, texture, and size of any fries in the area. Where there are hot dogs and French fries there is usually chili. Don’t be mistaken; their chili is not from a can - it is homemade with a top secret recipe known only to the managers. While Carousel’s food quality and environment are exceptional, their employees are equally impressive. The group of mostly high school students brings a relaxed and goofy charm to the place. Mostly young students, they are dedicated to bringing the best service to the community while bringing a smile to your face. An exceptional place to work with little turnover, they routinely have the same employees coming back year after year. “You know its really something special when you have them wanting to come back. We have been blessed with a good group of kids,” Norskog says about his employees. He noted some employees have been there for as long as 7 years. Everyone who has enjoyed ice cream at Carousel has seen the assortment of hilarious Trainee Hats. Curious of the origin? A loyal customer who was known for his imaginative head wear, donated a hat until his return from a trip. Thus the Trainee Hat was born.
Carousel newbie’s are strongly encouraged to wear these hats because it has been helpful in getting giggles out of customers as well as letting customers know they are new and would appreciate patience. Newbie’s are asked to wear the hats for as short as a couple of months or as long as a year and every once in a while a veteran employee will be asked to put on the Trainee Hat. Carousel has become a Warrenton icon, rivaling many longer standing area businesses. It is through their passion for quality, originality and friendly service that makes this place stand out. Be sure to stop by Carousel regularly to see the new additions to the menu, already added are two new flavors: sugar free chocolate and lime ice cream. The owners boast of a couple of surprises this summer in celebration of their 10th anniversary. You’ll have to make a visit to find out! Carousel is open Tuesdays – Thursdays from 11 to 9, Friday and Saturdays from 11 to 10 and Sundays noon to 9. Krysta Norman is a James Madison University graduate with a degree in Technical and Scientific Communications. She currently lives in Warrenton and is a Graphic Designer in Middleburg, Virginia. Photos by Holly Tedeschi The Carousel crew caters to customers with ice cream creations.

Aging Together in Fauquier County A buse H urts
Bob Bell, Fauquier County Department of Social Services and Vicki Vance, Fauquier County Resource Specialist, Aging Together While there are many ways that communities care for and support their older citizens, unfortunately there are also times when seniors are not well cared for. May is Elder Abuse Prevention Month, a good opportunity to educate yourself in the interest of helping protect our county’s valued older citizens. More than half a million reports of abuse against older Americans reach authorities every year, and millions more cases go unreported.
at
A ny Age
Older Americans are abused in their own homes, in relatives’ homes, and even in facilities responsible for their care. Help and protection of vulnerable adults is available through the Department of Social Services Adult Protective Services program. During 2008 local agencies responded to 4,908 Adult
Signs and symptoms of elder abuse: It may be difficult at first to recognize signs of elder abuse. They may appear to be symptoms of dementia or signs of the elderly person’s frailty – or caregivers may explain them that way. The warnings signs of elder abuse: Outward signs: Arguments or tension between the caregiver and the elderly person and changes in personality or behavior in the senior. Physical signs: Unexplained signs of injury such as bruises, welts, or scars, especially if they appear symmetrically on two sides of the body. Broken bones, sprains, or dislocations. Report of drug overdose or apparent failure to take medication regularly (a prescription has more remaining than it should) Broken eyeglasses or frames. Signs of being restrained, such as rope marks on wrists .Caregiver’s refusal to allow you to see the elder alone. Emotional abuse: Controlling, bullying and threatening behavior, dementia symptoms, signs of withdrawal. Sexual abuse: Bruising or bleeding, torn and bloody underclothes. 40
Caregiver neglect: Unusual weight loss, untreated physical problems, such as bed sores and untreated wounds, unsanitary living conditions: dirt, bugs, soiled bedding and clothes, evidence of senior being dirty or not bathed, unsafe living conditions (no heat or running water; faulty electrical wiring, other fire hazards) desertion of the elder at a public place, overmedicating or under medicating, poorly trained, poorly paid, or insufficient staff, crowding or inadequate responses to questions about care. Financial exploitation: Adding signature to senior’s signature card at bank, unpaid bills and collection notices, ATM withdrawals when the account holder is bedridden, unnecessary and/or inappropriate services, goods, or subscriptions.
Protective Service cases statewide. Adult Protective Services (APS) can offer help to adults who are: • 60 years of age or older; or • Incapacitated and age 18-59 By learning the signs and symptoms of elder abuse and how to act on behalf of an elderly person who is being abused, you’ll not only be helping someone else but strengthening your own defenses against elder abuse in the future. You may suspect that an older person you know is being harmed physically or emotionally by a neglectful caregiver or being taken advantage of financially. It’s helpful to be aware of the different types of abuse, their signs and symptoms. Abuse of elders takes many different forms. The most common are defined below. Physical abuse Physical elder abuse is non-accidental use of force against an elderly person that results in physical pain, injury, or impairment. Emotional abuse In emotional or psychological senior abuse, people speak to or treat elderly persons in ways that cause emotional pain or distress. Verbal forms of emotional elder abuse such as bullying and intimidation, ridicule, or blaming. Nonverbal psychological elder abuse can take the form of ignoring and isolating an elder from friends or activities or terrorizing and threatening the elderly person. Aging Continued from page 40 Neglect by caregivers Elder neglect or failure to fulfill a caretaking obligation constitutes more than half of all reported cases of elder abuse. It can be active (intentional) or passive (unintentional) denial or ignorance of the need, for example, overmedicating or undermedicating. Self-Neglect According to the Code of Virginia, Adult Neglect includes both adults who are self-neglecting as well as adults whose needs for physical or mental health services are not being met by a caregiver or responsible party. Self-neglect is very common and during 2008 it amounted to 57% (4,843 cases) of substantiated abuse type reports. Sexual abuse Sexual elder abuse is contact with an elderly person without the elder’s consent or unsolicited exposure to sexual material. Financial exploitation This involves unauthorized use of an elderly person’s funds or property, either by a caregiver or an outside criminal operating a scam. An unscrupulous caregiver might misuse an elder’s personal checks, credit cards, or accounts, forge the elder’s signature and engage in identity theft, steal cash, income checks, jewelry or household goods. Typical rackets that target elders include: invalid charities, investment fraud and announcement that the person has won a prize but must pay money to claim it. Healthcare fraud and abuse Carried out by unethical doctors, nurses, hospital personnel, and other professional care providers, fraud and abuse regarding elders include not providing healthcare, but charging for it, overcharging or double-billing for medical care or services, getting kickbacks for referrals to other providers or for prescribing certain drugs and Medicaid fraud. The Aging Together partnership Health and Wellness Regional Workgroup is developing a program designed to train and educate first responders including police, sheriff, EMS, Fire and Rescue, and in-home support personnel on how to identify and report cases of neglect and abuse to older adults. A regional meeting consisting of area first responders was held in August 2008 to provide information on abuse and neglect and determine if there was a need for training. With overwhelming 42
support for training, the Health & Wellness committee continued its research working with local, regional, in-state, and out-of-state organization where similar programs were available or in the development stage. In February and April 2009 the committee met separately with each county’s first responders to provide an update on their research. The group is now in the process of identifying various training materials to package as a complete training module for the region.
Reporting suspected abuse of seniors. Any person, including financial institutions, may report suspected abuse to APS. If you or someone you know is being mistreated, contact your local department of social services (540-347-2316) and ask for an APS worker, or you may call the 24-hour, toll-free hotline at: 1-888-832-3858. What information should be reported to APS? Give the name, age and address or location of the adult whom you suspect is being abused, neglected or exploited. Provide as much information about the abusive situation as possible. Will anyone know who reported? As APS report is confidential. The reporter’s name cannot be revealed unless the reporter gives permission or the court orders that the name be disclosed. Reports can also be made anonymously. Reporters are immune from civil and criminal liability for making a good-faith report. Mandated Reporters Virginia law requires some people to report suspected abuse of adults to APS. These are called MANDATED REPORTERS, and they must report suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation to APS immediately. Mandated Reports include: nurses, doctors and other health care professionals, funeral service providers, nursing home administrators, mental health providers, EMTs, law enforcement personnel, and individuals or organizations who provide services to seniors or incapacitated adults For more information about APS and Adult Services, visit the VDSS website at www.dss.virginia.gov.
Aging Together is a five-county coalition taking steps now to improve quality of life for older adults and their families. What’s New
Warrenton
Spring is here and with it many new blooms to brighten our days and aggravate our allergies. Fauquier also has new businesses blooming and one of those is Capstone Duct Cleaning, a company that can help with those allergies, at least while your inside. Check their website at CapstoneProServ.com to see how they can help clean up your indoor air problems. And to beautify the outside we now have Promise Landscape ready to give you that enviable yard you might not have time to do yourself. We also have a new Chevy Chase Bank open on Fletcher Drive (near the new Harris Teeter), with a full service lobby, drive through tellers, drive-up and walk-up ATMs and safe deposit boxes, ready to serve all your banking needs. We lost one business last month that was dear to my heart; Let’s Dish has closed for economic reasons and it will be missed by many. Capitol Sheds has moved to a new spot in the New Baltimore area. They are now located next to Jammin’ Joes BBQ, across from the fire house. Maybe as you enjoy more time outside, you may find just the right building, play house or gazebo for your yard. We also have a couple of businesses with reasons to celebrate. The Tadpole Café, located near Rankin’s Hardware is celebrating their 10th year serving French and Continental cuisine to our community. If you haven’t tried them, stop by, wish them well and grab a bite to eat. Napoleon’s is making some changes starting with a new chef, Todd Eisenhauer, with his concept and knowledge of casual and fine dining. Downstairs is Josephine’s Pub, the new casual alternative at Napoleon’s, featuring comfort food for lunch and dinner at a great value. Upstairs is the French Quarter, Fine Southern Cuisine for a fine dining option. A look at the menu will reveal Chef’s twist on traditional southern cuisine, with influences from the Low country area, Creole and Cajun fare, but keeping the prices reasonable so that you can visit more often. And when the weather warms, they will reopen the Garden area for outdoor dining as well as Waterloo Terrace (formerly the Tiki Bar). What a great way to enjoy an afternoon or evening in Warrenton. Amy Griffin is the owner of inFauquier.com, the most comprehensive online directory of consumer businesses located in Fauquier County. Maps to all the businesses can be found at inFauquier.com and check out the What’s New page for more business happenings in the entire county. You can reach her at (540)347-4922 or amy@inFauquier.com with your questions or any tidbits you hear about local business. 46
