From The Publisher

Dear Warrentonians: I’m looking at the articles we have lined up for this month’s issue and wondering how it’s all going to fit! The community has really come to life this spring and we intend on giving you a nice helping of what is going on. Most important, we are getting close to our Town elections. We want everyone to vote! To help, we’ve profiled the four candidates for the two open Town council seats from the perspective of their personal lives - in their own words. We left the politics out. You are going to elect two people who have much more to them than just their political beliefs. With Earth Day in April, managing editor Krysta Norman added a few ‘green’ articles to this issue. The first was probably the most fun - shopping at the consignment and thrift stores in town. We have several of them and they are profiled here. Do your

spring cleaning, maybe contribute to a local cause, pick up a few items to accentuate your house or replace some needed clothes or tools. Her second story is on the Rainforest Trust, an international organization headquartered here in Warrenton. For over 25 years they’ve been good stewards of the Earth’s most precious rainforests. They partner with indigenous people to better manage and care for their homeland to the benefit of the entire planet. Historian, John Toler, has another outstanding piece on local legend Donald Roebling, whose invention helped win WWII. George Rowand profiles a Warrenton favorite, former Liberty High School basketball star and attorney Marie Washington. There are over a dozen other columns and pieces inside.

Enjoy Warrenton!

Marie Washington Brings It From the Basketball Court… to the Court Room by George Rowand

You can always tell when someone enjoys their job. They smile a lot, laugh a lot, joke around … and spend a lot of time attending to their business. That’s how you know that Marie Washington likes being a lawyer in Warrenton. She looks the part. “I grew up in Midland,”Washington said. “My parents are still there. I settled in Warrenton because I like to be close to my family. I simply love Fauquier County and couldn’t see myself practicing anywhere else.” After finishing high school at Liberty High, where she was a prolific scorer on the girl’s basketball team – “Oh, yeah, I can still bring it,” she said with a laugh – Washington went off to William and Mary and got her undergraduate BA degree there in psychology, with a minor in government. Then she went off to Washington and Lee University to study law. “I went right from undergrad to law school. I was motivated and ready to take it to the next level. I wanted to get ‘er done,” she explained.

Loving the law

After graduating in 2003, Washington started practicing law in the law firm of Mark B. Williams in Warrenton. She opened her own practice in 2011. Her desire to be a washington continued on page 10

lawyer seems deep-rooted. “When I was growing up, I would watch Matlock with my grandfather, and I would say, ‘Oh, he’s so cool! He needs a new suit, but he’s so cool!’ I wanted to be like him, and the FBI was really interesting to me, too growing up, but I decided to practice law instead.” Opening a one-person law firm in a small town has been daunting, Washington. “Opening my firm was scary, but it was also something that I wanted to do,” she stated. “It’s hard to be by yourself, and I think that you can’t do it if you don’t love it because you have to live it and breathe it. We went to law school to learn how to be lawyers, not how to run a business ... do the payroll, the marketing … everything.” Yet in spite of the challenges – or maybe because of them – Washington is enjoying the life that she leads. “For me, the best thing about practicing law is seeing an issue, seeing it through and being able to help somebody get through their problem,” she explained. “Most people don’t know lawyers. It’s kind of like we’re their counselor, we’re their psychiatrist, we’re their friend. Nobody wants to see someone at what may be the worst point of their lives, but sometimes I do, and I’m able to help them get through it. That is very gratifying.”

Open case

Washington doesn’t specialize in any particular branch of the law. “I consider myself a general practitioner,” she said. “I do it all … estate planning, domestic, traffic, business entities, litigation. I like something different coming in through the door. I like going into court.” While the adversarial element of law practice is at the heart of the idea of the law that has been passed down to Americans from the British when we were colonies, Washington states that these days, there are other ways to reach a resolution to a problem,

particularly one that involves a domestic dispute. “I can be a litigator if I need to be,” she said, “but I appreciate being a mediator because when you go to court, it’s all in someone else’s hands. If you can mediate it, and both parties have an equal say, it’s always better for them. Going in front of a judge that doesn’t know you, doesn’t know your children, it’s kind of an intimidating and scary process for people.” She has handled her share of domestic disputes. As with all attorneys, her first response when a couple comes in is to see if the marriage can be saved.

“The first thing I do is ask if they’d like to go to counseling. I do have counselors that I can refer them to, and I also see if they want to go to mediation. At that point, if I really know that they do not want to reconcile, I see how they want to go washington continued on page 12

forward, if they want to do mediation to see if they can do a separation agreement. I’m not a mediator, but I can refer them to someone local.” Washington supports the works of local charities like Habitat for Humanity and the Fauquier SPCA, but it’s not all work and no play for her, even as a sole practitioner. She travels overseas fairly often – “I love to travel and see different cultures” – and she has pursued such endeavors as skydiving, though a perfect day for her would probably be something less stressful, like an all-day hike with her Great Pyrenees dog, Cody, and she confesses to a guilty pleasure that her friends might be surprised to learn.

“I really like The Big Bang Theory,” she said with a laugh. “I like how they’re using all the scientific terms.”

The profession suits

The training she received in law school cannot be turned off, Washington said. “I can’t sit somewhere and not look at all the issues of liability.” Washington said that she knows that many of her friends from law school are not practicing attorneys. It didn’t suit them, it seems. “I go back to law school reunion every year, and I’d say that most the people I went through law school with

are not practicing attorneys.” While her peers are working for businesses or corporations, Washington is pleased that she had the courage to hang out her own shingle and open her own practice. She isn’t sorry for one minute that she didn’t follow her classmates’ career paths. “I love practicing law. I like helping people, talking to people, seeing what their issues are, and seeing how I can help them,” she stated. “I feel guilty when I’m not at the office. I share office space with two attorneys, and they’re like, ‘Marie, you don’t want to get burnt out.’ And I say, ‘How can you get burnt out?’”

Fauquier Health In the Case of Heart Attack Symptoms, Err on the Side of Speed

Dr. Michael Jenks is chairman of the Fauquier Hospital Emergency Department. He is featured in a video explaining the symptoms of a heart attack and what you should do if you experience any of those symptoms. The video is at:http://www. youtube.com/watch?v=_VcLphSCAFM&feature=youtu.be. The key to saving your life during a heart attack is time. Don’t wait. Call 911 as soon as you experience any symptoms and go to the nearest hospital. As hard as it may be to believe, many people die because they are worried about inconveniencing family members or having people “make a fuss” if the symptoms turn out not to be a heart attack. It is important to listen to your body. If it doesn’t feel right to you, it is better to get it checked.

they dismiss as not serious enough to seek emergency care.

Chest pain is the most common symptom of a heart attack, but symptoms vary for everyone. You may feel the pain in only one part of your body, like your chest, arm or stomach; or it may move from your chest to your arms, shoulder, neck, teeth, jaw, belly area or back. Unfortunately, 50 percent of patients having a heart attack first notice only mild, sometimes intermittent chest symptoms, which

Women, elderly people and those with diabetes are more likely to have unusual or less noticeable symptoms. The most common heart attack symptom for women is chest pain or discomfort, but women are also more likely to experience other symptoms — like shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, and back or jaw pain. Symptoms may also go away and come back.

14

On average, a person with heart attack symptoms waits three hours or more before seeking help, but those with the best chance of survival are those who get help within two hours of the first symptom. Eighty five percent of permanent heart damage occurs in the first two hours of an attack, but prompt medical treatment can reduce the amount of that heart damage.

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF A HEART ATTACK INCLUDE: • Feeling a constricting band around the chest with a squeezing or pressing down feeling. The feeling may come and go, radiate or remain steady • Numbness or weakness, usually in the left arm • Shortness of breath, lightheadedness or dizziness • Cold sweats, which can be very heavy • Bad indigestion, a feeling of fullness, nausea or vomiting (more common in women) • Pain in the back or jaw (more common in women) • Feelings of anxiety or impending doom LESS FREQUENTLY, SYMPTOMS INCLUDE: • Coughing • Fainting • Palpitations, like your heart is beating too fast or irregularly • Elderly people and those with diabetes may also experience altered mental status or unexpected weakness or fatigue WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE SYMPTOMS: • GO TO the nearest hospital. • DO NOT try to drive yourself to the hospital. • DO NOT WAIT. You are at greatest risk of death in the early hours of a heart attack. • MOST IMPORTANTLY: If you are trying to decide if you should call 911, that means you should. Warrenton Lifestyle

Rainforest Trust Warrenton-Based Nonprofit Works to

Save Exotic Places & Species A local nonprofit has been actively working to save rainforests and other threatened tropical habitats that are critical for preventing imminent species extinction. The Rainforest Trust got its start in 1988 and for over twenty-five years the organization has celebrated saving over seven million real acres within seventeen countries with sixty-seven total sites. With the help of their dedicated staff and support from generous contributors – including many Warrenton residents – the Rainforest Trust is continuing their efforts in conservation action. “We’ve been in the Warrenton area for about five years after leaving 16

our Georgetown home,” Joe Lowe, the Communication Director, mentioned. Now located in old town Warrenton, they’ve found that their easy access to Dulles International Airport and fortyfive minute drive back to D.C. was a great fit for the organization. “I don’t think many people realize that one of the leading conservation organizations in the nation is located right here,” Lowe said. Simply put, the Rainforest Trust saves certain areas in the tropics. They work with local partners to identify areas that are most at risk for destruction and those with endangered species at risk for extinction.

“We create nature reserves to preserve the area for species in two ways: to buy land outright or to work with governments to set up locally or nationally protected areas,” Lowe explained. Led by their Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Paul Salaman, who Lowe mentioned is a great scientist, the Rainforest Trust uses scientific studies to narrow down and select the right tracts of land and animals that would benefit from their support. rainforest trust continued on page 18 Warrenton Lifestyle

“He’ll go down and work with our international partners frequently,” Lowe explained. Dr. Salaman has quite an impressive background including expeditions across Colombia where for three years he worked to create a new national park and four nature reserves. He turned birding from hobby to passion and he has identified four new species including the Choco-Viero that he discovered at age 19. It is clear his enthusiasm for preservation runs deep and has lead him to found and support numerous nonprofits that concentrate on conservation. The Rainforest Trust is working on a fairly new project that will coincide with the upcoming Earth Day celebration. “We have a big campaign coming up that we hope to protect 100,000 acres in the Amazon,” Lowe explained. This campaign will help support a larger project they started last year. The area is located on the border of Brazil and Peru called the Sierra Del Divisor, an isolated mountain range that stretches more than six hundred miles in the heart of the Amazon. Their website describes the area with plunging waterfalls, dormant volcanic cones, wild rivers, pristine forests and uncontacted tribes. This area is largely unknown and unexplored making it a true wilderness. “The thing that is really cool about this area is that it’s barely been studied,” Lowe said. “This mountain range is older than the Andes and has hot springs flowing in the middle of the Amazon creating such a unique range of environment.” Right now the area is threatened with oil development, mining development, road and pipeline construction, over-fishing and illegal logging. These activities, within a matter of years, could destroy this treasured area. The campaign will work to create an enormous national preserve or park as well as a natural border of fifty-seven community territories that will form a cushion around the new park. As mentioned on their website additional funds collected will also provide financial assistance in installing park infrastructure, creating management plans for protected areas and providing indigenous communities with training in park protection. “The whole project together will take about four years to complete and it will protect 5.9 million acres,” Lowe mentioned. To put that into perspective Yellowstone National Park is 2,221,766 acres meaning the project the Rainforest Trust hopes to complete is almost three times the size. Currently the funds they’ve raised total $650,000 of the 2.9 million they will need. “The great thing about this project is these areas are going to be protected through national decree meaning it’s extremely inexpensive,” Lowe explained. “People can save an acre for about fifty cents, so for about fifty dollars you can save one hundred acres.” They are hoping their Earth Day drive will inspire people to educate themselves on the need for conservation and motivate them to make a donation. Within the Amazon, twenty percent of the Earth’s air and two-thirds of the Earth’s freshwater is here. Lowe mentioned that recent studies released last year indicated that deforestation in the Amazon could lead to droughts in the western United States. By maintaining a healthy and protected Amazon the rest of the Earth can remain well balanced. “We are an organization that can connect the people in Warrenton with the wider world,” Lowe explained. “I know a lot of people are passionate about deforestation and endangered species and we offer a way for people to connect with those kind of causes and to really make a difference.” Being in Warrenton for close to five years, the Rainforest Trust is really excited to get the local community involved in their mission.

“We really want to start building relationships within Warrenton both with residents and businesses,” Lowe stated.

let’s talk business

springing forward with the Greater Warrenton Chamber of Commerce past February 13. We finally did get together and there are great things in store for the GWCC, its members, and this community in general. To start, we have a very dynamic Board of Directors consisting of former Board presidents and strong leaders from every aspect of the business community. In addition to our volunteer board, members are especially charged up. Our Executive Director, Michele Flores, is now into her 2nd year on the job and her excellence just continues to grow. As President of the GWCC, I am not sure who’s leading whom. Sometimes I feel like a kid in a little red wagon being pulled by a team of Clydesdale horses.

I hope that the readers of Warrenton Lifestyle are enjoying this Spring. We all deserve a good thaw after this past Winter. Although the calendar says that January 1 is the start of a new year, Spring has always been the new year for me and Easter has always been my favorite holiday. The Resurrection and new beginnings hold special meaning for me. For our business community, the Spring is also the start of our new year. The snowfall has been tough on businesses. Orders could not be delivered, customers stayed home and projects were delayed. Indeed, the planning retreat for the Board of Directors of the Greater Warrenton Chamber of Commerce (GWCC) was postponed a week due to the storm this

The GWCC is excited to have the George Mason Enterprise Center Business Incubator Program move into Old Town Warrenton. This is a great accomplishment by the forwardthinking Miles Friedman, Director of the Fauquier County Department of Economic Development. Perhaps, by the time this article is published, I intend to have signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the GWCC, the Incubator Program and our friends at the Fauquier County Chamber of Commerce outlining our joint efforts to aid Renee Younes as newly appointed director for the Incubator Program with assisting businesses and attracting the right businesses to Fauquier County. The Incubator will nicely compliment a program the GWCC has had in place for over four years, the Business Assistance Team. This program started during the storm of the recession in 2009 and was at first dubbed the “Triage Unit.” Business leaders of the GWCC spent countless hours of their own time helping as many

struggling businesses as they could. Many were saved and are still thriving today. Since that time, the BAT has become more organized and the process refined. It has helped a variety of businesses and nonprofit organizations by providing business counseling, business and marketing plans, and a virtual Board of Directors only a phone call or email away. Probably due the strict adherence to the confidentiality policy, the BAT is one of Fauquier’s best kept secrets providing timely confidential assistance from an array of experts who are caring, local and actively in business. Carrying on the spirit of the BAT, the GWCC will continue to emphasize assistance and education. In fact, social mixers are being preceded by an educational seminar or panel discussion before the participants are turned loose to network in a congenial and fun atmosphere. There will also be carry over of programs from the past which we strive to continually improve. For example, here’s to keeping our fingers crossed for great weather for our annual Father’s Day Car Show. What a great day for family and community. You can not beat the craftsmanship and pride exhibited by owners of the vintage automobiles which are on display. The event is accompanied by good food and music. On that day, raffle tickets will also be sold so a lucky winner may win a car (or take the cash) if he or she so chooses. As we progress through the year, I urge you to stay tuned to new, innovative and dynamic programs the GWCC will bring to the community. You can see the calendar of activities on our website under “Events,” at which guests are always welcome. I look forward to meeting more of you. www.warrentonchamber.org 540-229-8915

Donald Roebling’s ‘Alligator’ Invention by a Stuyvesant School graduate helped win WWII By John T. Toler

Most people are familiar with Warrenton’s Roebling Street, which runs through the Stuyvesant Acres subdivision between North and Stuyvesant streets. But it is unlikely that newer residents of the neighborhood are aware of the origin of the name of their street.

Mrs. Margaret Church Littleton of Middleburg, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. King, recalls that Donald Roebling stayed in touch with the King family for years after graduating from Stuyvesant. He gave her mother, Emily North King (1916-2004), a fine Oriental rug as a wedding present when she married Melville Church II (19131965) in 1936.

For many years, the open land across Winchester Street from the old Stuyvesant School (now the location of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church) was used for equestrian and field events (See Warrenton Lifestyle, April 2013). Edwin B. King, owner of the school, subdivided the 80-acre tract in 1937. When development of the land started in the mid1940s, the new streets in the subdivision were given names connected with Mr. King’s family and friends. Roebling Street was named in honor of Donald Roebling (1908-1959), a graduate of Stuyvesant School’s Class of 1926. Although remembered as just an average student at Stuyvesant, young Donald apparently enjoyed his time there. 24

Mrs. Littleton has the rug, which she treasures, and a few rare photos and news clippings about Roebling that were passed down through the years.

Donald Roebling was the great-grandson of John Augustus Roebling (1806-1869), a native of Prussia, who emigrated to the U.S. in 1831. A skilled engineer, he was a pioneer in the building of suspension bridges, and later developed the highstrength steel wire used in suspension bridge construction.

Moving to Florida as a young man, Donald Roebling built this mansion on the beach at Clearwater, Florida. He also had a fully equipped workshop, where he designed and built prototypes of the ‘Alligator’ amphibious vehicle. Photo by Orville K. Blake, courtesy of Mrs. Margaret Littleton. alligator continued from page 24

John Augustus Roebling built a factory to produce steel cable in Trenton, New Jersey. Assisted by his son, Washington Augustus Roebling (1837-1926), he took on the challenge of designing and building the Brooklyn Bridge over the East River. Work on the huge suspension bridge linking Manhattan Island with Brooklyn began in 1868. Unfortunately, John A. Roebling suffered a foot injury at the job site when a boat struck the ferry slip on which he was standing. He had to have his toes amputated, and died three weeks later of tetanus. The duties of chief engineer then fell to Washington Roebling, who was also badly injured in 1870 while working on the bridge. With the help of his wife, Emily Warren Roebling (1842-1903), Washington was able to remain as the chief engineer of the project, and the bridge was completed in 1883. After finishing the bridge project, Washington focused on building the family business, known as John A. Roebling Sons, into a major industrial enterprise.

Washington and Emily’s only child, John A. Roebling II (1867-1932), took over the family business about 1900. He was married to Margaret Shippen McIllvaine (1867-1952), and they had three sons, including Donald, who was born in 1908. During World War I, the Roebling factory produced war materiel, including thousands of miles of cable for the anti-submarine nets used to protect Allied ports from probing German submarines. After World War I, John A. Roebling II focused his energies on managing the family fortune and philanthropy. The Roeblings had a sprawling mansion in Bernardsville, N.J., and a winter home in Lake Placid, Fla. Donald was sent to the Stuyvesant School in 1918, where he spent the next eight years. After graduating, he entered the Bliss Electric School, an electrical engineering academy in Washington, D.C., rather than going on to college like most of his classmates. Although Donald worked hard and

had a talent for problem-solving that bordered on genius, he was continually in conflict with his teachers at Bliss, and was asked to leave in 1928.

Life in Florida

Rather than returning to his parents’ home in New Jersey, Donald Roebling moved to Clearwater, Florida, where he lived with his uncle, Francis McIllvaine, until his father set him up with a construction company. In 1929, Roebling was engaged to Florence Spottswood Parker, also of New Jersey, and purchased a seven-acre beachfront property at 700 Orange Avenue in Clearwater, next to his uncle’s house. Over the next three years, he designed and built a 15-room mansion and a large machine shop. They married in 1932 and moved into their new home, which was called “Spotswood.” However, the marriage only lasted about two years, ending in divorce. While residing in Clearwater, Roebling gained a reputation for his alligator continued on page 28

eccentricities, as well as his physical appearance. He was addicted to sweets, and by then weighed over 400 pounds, concentrated primarily in his outsized posterior. In order to accommodate Roebling at the local cinema, the management prepared a special seat by removing the armrest between two normal seats.

“Yet, with all these peculiarities, he was one of Clearwater’s outstanding philanthropists. During the Depression, when the Peoples Bank of Clearwater was running low on funds, Brother Roebling deposited a large sum of money, thus giving their customers more confidence in the stability of the bank.”

Roebling joined Dunedin Lodge No. 192, F. & A.M. in July 1934 as an Apprentice Mason, and by September was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason “On Sight” by the Grand Master of Florida. Seventy-five Years on the Square (1994), the history of Dunedin Lodge No. 192, provides added insights into Roebling’s unique character.

It is likely that the destruction of the “cabin cruiser” had to do with the circumstances of the divorce from his second wife, Margaret Napier Roebling, whom he married in 1934.

“Brother Donald Roebling was very eccentric. It is reported he once gave away a $35,000 airplane, simply because he was tired of it. Invariably after acquiring a new car, he would give it a coat of aluminum paint. He seemed to have a fixation for aluminum. Once, on a whim, when he decided to rid himself of a cabin cruiser, he had it loaded with dynamite and anchored offshore. Then, from the porch of his mansion, he fired at it with a highpowered rifle until it blew up. “Brother Roebling was noted for his weird Halloween parties, at which he would offer guests chocolates with chewing-tobacco centers. And he took a keen delight in photographing his guests’ shocked expression when a ‘devil’ would jump from an exploding tomb on the lawn. 28

According to a sensational account published in a 1936 edition of American Weekly provided by Mrs. Littleton, the Roeblings were cruising on their yacht in the Caribbean with friends when a deckhand and a guest witnessed Mrs. Roebling “…betraying her husband in the matrimonial sense” with another man on the roof of the pilothouse. Roebling was furious when he learned about the dalliance, and there was a bitter, nine-week trial before a “mutual divorce” was granted. One can understand why Roebling no longer wanted anything to do with the yacht, or memories associated with it.

Birth of the ‘Alligator’

In addition to managing his construction company in Clearwater, Roebling worked on hobby projects, including designing and building mechanical devices. It was through his tinkering, reinforced with his talent for problem solving and determination,

that his true gift as an inventor was revealed. In 1928, the Lake Okeechobee region in Florida was ravaged by a hurricane, resulting in $25 million in damages and the deaths of nearly 1,900 residents. At his direction, the employees at John A. Roebling II’s home in Lake Placid assisted in the rescue efforts. Upon returning after the disaster, they reported to Mr. Roebling that many more people could have been saved, had the rescuers been able to reach them in time. However, no boat or truck existed that could cross the swampy, cluttered morass left by the hurricane. A humanitarian, John A. Roebling felt compelled to act, and increasingly aware of his son Donald’s talents as a designer and engineer, challenged him to build a reliable and commercially useful amphibious rescue vehicle that could operate on both land and water. Assured of his father’s financial backing, Roebling accepted the challenge, and went to work in the shop near his home. He hired a three-man technical staff, who soon ascertained the two biggest challenges others had not been able to overcome: making a machine that was light enough to be buoyant in the water, but sturdy enough to withstand rugged use on land; and devising a simple propulsion system that could operate alligator continued on page 30 Warrenton Lifestyle

Archbold (1907-1976), who used the vehicle on a successful expedition into New Guinea, where he collected animal specimens for the American Museum and many new plants for the Arnold Arboretum.

The Alligator Goes to War

As luck would have it, military officials became aware of the existence of Roebling’s Alligator IV when Life magazine published the story about the New Guinea expedition as its Science and Industry feature in the issue of Oct. 3, 1937.

Knowing that his shop couldn’t produce that volume of vehicles, Roebling contracted with John D. Crummy, president of the Food Machinery Corporation (FMC) in Dunedin to build the hulls and install the mechanical parts, which would be produced by other manufacturers and shipped to FMC.

By 1935, Roebling completed his first prototype, which he called the “Alligator.” It was 24 feet long, weighed 14,350 pounds, and was powered by In February 1938, the Marine a 92-hp Chrysler engine. New Britain and the other islands wrested from the Japanese, as well as during the Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1944. Writing from Okinawa after the epic invasion of the island in April-June 1945, Maj. Gen. Roy Geiger, USMC, called LTVs “…the workhorses of the Marine Corps,” adding, “Except for the ‘amtracs,’ it would have been impossible for our troops to get ashore at Tarawa, Saipan, Guam or Peleliu without taking severe, if not prohibitive, losses.” Based on performance at the battlefront, LTVs were continually upgraded and improved as they rolled off the assembly lines. By the end of WWII, 18,600 LTVs in various models and weaponry had been built.

Roebling is recognized

Throughout the process of bringing the Alligator up to Marine Corps standards, Roebling refused to accept any direct royalties or commissions from the government for his work.

This was noted in a wartime issue of Time magazine, which pointed out that, “Donald Roebling could have raced fancy cars, captained yachts, or cavorted on his Clearwater, Fla. showplace for a lifetime.” Instead, he dedicated prime years of his life to designing the Alligator, which the magazine described as, “The pride and joy of the U.S. Navy, and one of the reasons for U.S. successes at Guadalcanal.” The article went on to note that “However vital to the war effort, Donald Roebling is not making a penny from his Alligators. He turned the whole invention over to the government, waved aside all commissions, and even got the Food Machinery Co. to cut its contract price. To Donald Roebling, this is his contribution to the war, and he is glad to make it.” In 1947, Roebling was presented the Medal of Merit signed by Pres. Harry Truman at a ceremony at the Naval Air Station at Jacksonville,

Fla. He also received a Certificate of Achievement from the U.S. Navy for his invention of the Alligator, which in later forms would see action in Korea and Vietnam. Roebling returned to private life, enjoying the same pursuits he had before the war. He continued his family’s philanthropic work in the Clearwater area, building the Roebling Wing on the Morton Plant Hospital, and contributing the Roebling Hall of Peace at the Memorial Presbyterian Church. Roebling married a third time, but still had no children. His health at risk due to his 400-lb. physique, he died of complications following gall bladder surgery on Aug. 29, 1959. He was only 50 years old. FMC became a major defense contractor after the war, and later produced the AAV7A1 assault amphibian vehicle – a direct descendant of Roebling’s Alligator – as well as other military hardware.

It’s Nifty Being Thrifty

Warrenton Thrift Stores Provide Green Options

Every April we are reminded of the importance of environmental protection – recycle, reduce and reuse – in order to keep our home beautiful. As most of you would agree, Warrenton is the best place to live with unique shops, highly rated restaurants and kind residents. We are lucky to live in a community that is supportive of keeping Warrenton’s eco-footprint small and to have businesses sustain that notion. Within our town you’ll find seven stores that specialize in reusing and repurposing anything from clothing, to furniture to dishes and even household appliances This month make a point to help us create a cleaner Warrenton and a healthier planet by perusing the aisles, shelves and racks of slighted loved pieces or by dropping off gently used items for consignment or donation.

Do You Déjà Vu

43 Main Street, Warrenton | (540)347-7743 Specializing in designer and vintage clothing for women and children, Do You Déjà Vu offers guests a stress-free shopping experience with on-demand brands, neatly organized clothing racks, clean dressing rooms and friendly staff. The store is welcoming, especially with their eye-catching window display, and setup much like an upscale boutique. There is plenty of open space with featured clothing items and accessories on display. No matter what your style is, recognizable brands and designers of all types can be found. Guests can expect to stumble upon coveted items by Coach, Louis Vuitton, Tori Burch, Dooney & Bourke, Chanel, Gucci and more. Their store inventory changes frequently depending on season as well as new consignments. They carry dresses, skirts, blouses, t-shirts, jackets, boots, sandals, purses, pants, jeans, belts, jewelry and more. It is recommended to check out their store often to see what new finds are in.

Treasure Box Thrift & Consignment Store 50 Sullivan Street | (540)359-6801

Warrenton’s newest consignment shop, opening in 2013, has quickly grown into its name offering Warrentonians a variety of treasures. This place offers items from jewelry, novelty pins, antique furniture, records, kitchen appliances, video gaming systems and much more. Clean and neatly organized, the store-front features smaller delicate pieces like glass vases, jewelry, framed art and more. A quick turn around the corner and the rest of the store opens up. The additional room boasts all of the larger items like dressers, clothing racks as well as unique or highly sought after childhood toys. Owner Matt Kemper finds excitement in owning a shop that continuously has new items coming in. He likes hunting and shopping for special pieces to bring to the store and especially enjoys hearing the stories attached to consignment pieces. Treasure Box Thrift & Consignment Store has helpful staff who are knowledgeable about the location of particular items and willing to help you load up your purchases. As suspected, their inventory changes frequently so swing by often to see what is available for purchase or to ask questions about consigning your own items.

The White Elephant

484 Blackwell Road | (540)349-0666 Sisters Cynthia and Leslie Broockman accidently brought to Warrenton one of the most popular and long-standing consignment shops in the county opening in 1988. It started as a simple weekend sale at a friend’s shop in Middleburg; an assortment of items and things that the sisters were ready to part with but knew they were of good quality and of interest to others. That one weekend turned into many and then a store with limited hours and eventually the White Elephant we know today. The pair is meticulous with their selections making sure to only place gently-used, likenew items on their floor. This store features an assortment of clothing, accessories, decorative accents, jewelry, antiques, collectibles, live indoor plants, art, books, shoes, furniture and more. Their friendly staff is knowledgeable about their stock and can easily provide assistance in selecting the right lamp, dress or perfect gift for a friend. 42

MONEY

Let Your Portfolio Work for You by Nicholas Sicina

It takes time and effort to build an investment strategy that fits your goals. But several factors can disrupt even the best-crafted plan. The simple day-to-day movements of the financial markets can pose a real threat to the health of your portfolio. Here’s why: As stock and bond markets fluctuate, your asset allocation — the mixture of stocks, bonds and short-term cash investments in your portfolio — can also change. If the markets’ moves are left unchecked, your portfolio’s investment mix can deviate significantly from its original allocation. “That portfolio can end up taking on risk characteristics very different from those you originally established,” says Ty Morgan, senior vice president and director of mutual fund advisory programs at Wells Fargo Advisors. “Rebalancing your portfolio is one of the most important decisions you can make to control risk and volatility.” WHY REBALANCE? During the recent stock market downturn, many investors got a fast education on the importance of rebalancing. In 2008, based on the return of indices, stock values plunged 37 percent while intermediate-term bonds gained 13 percent. Hypothetical investors who started the year with a 60/40 split between stocks and bonds would have seen their portfolio end 2008 with an asset allocation of 46 percent stocks and 54 percent bonds — nearly the inverse of the original allocation. And if they hadn’t brought their investment mix back in line with the target allocation, a smaller portion of the hypothetical portfolio would have benefited from the stock market’s strong performance in 2009, when equities gained nearly 27 percent. “In 2008, everyone wanted out of the market,” Morgan says, “which meant most of them were still sitting on the sidelines — and missing stock exposure — when the equity markets rebounded in 2009.” In addition to keeping your asset allocation on target (and your exposure to the potential for gains), rebalancing can help reduce risk in your portfolio (and your exposure to the potential for losses). Periodic rebalancing may help reduce the chance that your portfolio will be too heavily exposed to one particular asset class, so moves affecting that asset class are less likely to have an

outsize effect on your overall portfolio. What’s more, rebalancing may help you invest more efficiently by focusing your investments on asset classes that have fallen in value. As Morgan notes, “It’s a strategy that forces investors to buy low.” HOW IT’S DONE Rebalancing tends to take one of two forms. One is to sell asset classes that have ballooned beyond their initial price target, and to then invest the proceeds in asset classes that have drifted below their target allocation over time. The other is to simply direct any new contributions to areas of your portfolio that have fallen below their targets. The first strategy may be a good choice for tax-advantaged accounts such as 401(k)s and IRAs because selling investments won’t trigger any capital gains taxes. In a taxable account, however, the taxes you generate may eat into your portfolio’s returns. In such cases, you may want to use new contributions to restore your portfolio’s asset allocation. You may find that manually adjusting your investment mix on a regular basis — Morgan says most investors should rebalance once a year — requires more effort than you have time for. If so, consider taking advantage of automatic rebalancing, which is typically available for some types of managed accounts. You can choose to have your portfolio’s asset allocation rebalanced annually or even quarterly. Whether you decide to rebalance your portfolio manually or automatically, Morgan says, the key is to have a disciplined approach to keeping your asset allocation on target. “This is a strategy that can help you strip emotion from the decision-making process,” he says. “Taking a systematic approach instead of constantly tinkering with your portfolio can help lead to long-term success.” Asset allocation cannot eliminate the risk of fluctuating prices and uncertain returns.

C untdown to the Upcoming Elections Part 4: Town Council Candidates’ Profiles There are only five weeks until the upcoming Town of Warrenton elections for the two open at-large seats. Our staff asked the four candidates to present a profile of themselves with a bit of their personal background. We worked with them to omit the politics. We will leave that to their campaigns and the journalism coverage in the newspapers and online. Candidates were limited to 600 words, given specific questions to answer, asked to provide a photo and to describe themselves in three words. They are listed in alphabetical order by last name. Take the time to get to know each of them. Research their politics, make your choice and vote on May 6th!

Roger R. Martella Jr. |

Father, father & father

The most important thing to know about me is I am the father of three amazing children (ages 7-14), and everything I do in life is centered on their well being and, importantly, providing the best possible environment for them to live. Creating the strongest possible community for families of all ages is thus the overarching reason I have pursued public service to the Town and County for the last 15 years. As one of two sitting council members with school aged children, nothing is more important to me than making sure Warrenton’s families of all ages, shapes, and sizes live in the most supportive community possible with an abundance of recreational activities, safe roads, low taxes, job opportunities, and shopping close to home. We choose to live here because Warrenton is a unique place that fosters a true and distinct sense of community. The more that Northern Virginia has sprawled around us and almost up to our doorstep, the more I increasingly appreciate how fortunate I am for my family to live in a town that places all emphasis on preserving its own unique sense of community instead of trying to morph into another anonymous Northern Virginia suburb. Warrenton is a community that truly stands on the shoulders of countless volunteers who selflessly provide critical safety, medical, counseling, and other support to those in need. One of the events that best exemplifies Warrenton’s exceptional community-first spirit, and which I have been proud to sponsor for several years, is the Molly’s Irish Pub 5-K Fundraiser for wounded warriors. Beyond merely supporting an extraordinary cause, this is truly a community event. A Main elections continued on page 50

elections continued from page 48 Street business making the most of our neighborhoods in organizing hundreds of residents and families of all ages to promote both fitness and a worthy charity has in a short time become one of the Town’s most beloved traditions. Of my various responsibilities in Warrenton, I am most proud of the opportunity I have to co-chair the Town’s recreation committee. It’s hard to believe that in less than eight short years we have gone from having to drive 30 minutes to find a soccer field to sustaining in Town such a thriving park system that serves over 10,000 people per month

David A. Norden |

for athletics, recreation, and physical rehabilitation. Beyond the fields and pools at the WARF, it also has been great to see significant improvements to Eva Walker Park in the past few years, and I am looking forward to permanent bathrooms being installed later this year at Eva Walker Park and the WARF fields, as well as new trails. There is nothing that makes me prouder to serve Warrenton than seeing full fields of children and pools of swimmers at the WARF, community and church celebrations at Eva Walker Park, and dog walkers and runners on the Greenway. One simple thing: Engage. Tell the Town about a stop sign you think

would benefit your neighborhood, an idea for a park or new trail, a viewpoint or a concern about a new development, or what the Town can do better to help our home grown economy prosper. I appreciate the unique community we have here, but am constantly striving with my colleagues to make the Town a better place for everyone. We are most likely to succeed if we have the direct input and participation from the community that drives our roads, walks our streets, and runs the cash registers every day. My website is nordenmartella.com, my email is roger.martella@verizon.net and my cellphone is (202) 253-9027 Thank you and good luck.

Father/husband, Architect, Councilman

I have lived in Warrenton all my life and use to pedal my bike up to Main Street to buy penny candy. I returned following graduation from Virginia Tech in 1984 and have been practicing architecture in the town with the same people I started with almost 30 years ago. Married to Renee Snyder Norden for almost 19 years, we have two wonderful daughters ages 11 and 13. Most of my hobbies now revolve around their activities including music, playing soccer at WARF, and bike riding at Rady Park. The quality of life and charm of the community and it’s people keep me here. I feel profoundly lucky to have been able to come back from school to own a business and raise a family here. It is a town with low taxes and high services creating an environment where businesses can thrive, with recreational opportunities often only found in much larger communities. Warrenton is the place Renee and I hope our children will want to stay and raise their children. It is impossible to single out one favorite charity. I have donated my architectural skills to help multiple organizations over the years. Some of these include the newest medical facility for the Fauquier Free Clinic, multiple structures at Verdun Adventure Bound, which is a center for at-risk children, the new Warrenton/ Fauquier Visitor and Educational Center on Calhoun Street, and a Women’s Abuse Shelter. Before being elected to the Town Council in 1998, I spent the previous ten years volunteering on numerous Boards, primarily local civic and preservation minded organizations. Since then, most of my time has been 50

consumed with the work required by being an active Councilman. Beyond those routine duties, I volunteered to help negotiate the land deal which allowed for the location of WARF to be built and put hundreds of acres of farmland in permanent open space easement and, as an architect, have volunteered to be the point person negotiating to hold developers to a higher standard to get better quality neighborhoods for our community. I also volunteer to chair the town’s utilities committee and co-chair the town/county liaison committee. First, get involved and please vote on May 6th. Second, communicate with those of us on Council to let us

know what things are working well and what things need attention. Third, shop and dine locally as often as you can. We have wonderful merchants and business owners throughout the town providing many great services. I have an open door policy with all residents and business owners. My office is at 19 Winchester Street (right next to the library), so I am in town and accessible at all times. My daytime phone is 540-347-4232 and my email address is David@hsnaia.com. Sean M. Polster |

Husband, Father, Mentor

I moved to Fauquier County in 1996. In 2000 and my wife Nicole and I purchased our house in the Town of Warrenton. We reside here with our three children. We are parishioners at St. John’s church and are fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in many of the wonderful events hosted here in the Town of Warrenton. While I am a career firefighter/paramedic I also enjoy volunteering as a firefighter/paramedic with the New Baltimore Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company. My family and I spend much of our time at the WARF, as all of our children play roller hockey. I also enjoy golf, twilight polo at Great Meadows and spending time with my family near and far. I moved to Warrenton in 1996 for a job at the former Vint Hill Farm Station and haven’t left since. I was reared in an Army family and moving every three to four year was a natural way of life as an Army child, but after enjoying the charming town I knew this is where I wanted to raise a family. So 14 years later nothing has changed, I still embrace this town’s charm, elegance and sense of openness. My family and I enjoy the endless opportunities right at our back door every weekend to enjoy in our community without having to drive outside of Fauquier County. We frequent the parks, ride bicycles on the trails and attend the open air concerts and festivals throughout the summer months in Warrenton. Having family events every week brings the residents together and by doing that we strengthen our community. There are several great organizations that my wife and I have been involved in over the years that significantly support the community and it is hard to limit this to just one. But, as an active member of the Fauquier County Fire and Rescue Association I would say that the local fire and rescue departments are what I support the most. When I teach new firefighter/paramedics I tell them that when somebody calls 911 it is because they are looking to us as emergency responders to provide the answer to their emergency. The tools of the trade are not inexpensive with an average fire engine costing $600,000.00. The volunteers in this county rely significantly on donations

and fundraising to support the emergency responses of their organizations. I started my emergency services career in 1988 as a member of the National Ski Patrol in Germany. After returning to the states I became an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic and now over twenty years later I still have a passion to help those in their time of need which is why serving as a town council member was a natural move. Another exciting opportunity I had to volunteer in the town came two years ago. Many people know me as, “the guy who saved the Christmas parade,” but I never imagined the countless number of volunteer hours needed to make this event a success. I also volunteer with my children’s hockey team and assist the Fauquier County Roller Hockey League with maintenance around the WARF. My father, a 27 year Army veteran, and mother, an Army nurse during the Vietnam Conflict, always said that you have to give back before you can take. We all have busy lives and I would encourage our residents to get involved in some aspect of our community. But everybody needs to get out and vote May 6th! L.P. ‘Sunny’ Reynolds Committed, Enthusiastic, Go-getter A mother of two and long-time self-employed businesswoman (25 years), I’ve combined my love of professional photography with my passion for world travel (and other cultures) into my travel tour business. Outside that endeavor, I’ve committed my time to the things I believe in---I’m a Red Cross Disaster volunteer, a 3 year Board Member of the Greater Warrenton Chamber of Commerce, an amateur car and motorcycle buff, an avid gardener, and animal enthusiast and a supporter of all things ART from the Fauquier Theater to the Bluemont Concert series. I’ve published two books, and enjoyed the outdoors all my life, from hiking Old Rag to diving in Honduras to white water rafting in West Virginia. I promote tourism and preservation of the environment world wide, and I hope to bring my experience to our town with a balanced approach. As a woman, and a former elected Town Council member (from 1994 to 1998), I have a unique perspective on the issues and an active contribution to make at this crucial juncture. Life brought me here--from Syracuse, New York. I don’t miss the hard winters or eternal snow shoveling, which has, by the way, given me a deep appreciation for our public works’ contribution to our community. I stay because after visiting every continent, I choose to call Warrenton my home. I’ve grown attached to Warrenton because of the relationships I’ve formed through the local businesses, art organizations, our schools and nonprofit communities, and because I value the intimacies of small town life. I don’t have a ‘favorite’ charity--I support many. From the regional chapter of the Red Cross, to the Boys and Girls Club, the Food Bank, the Fauquier Free Clinic, Habitat for Humanity, The Family Shelter, and the list goes on.... For example I joined my business savvy with my love of the

arts to implement a unique calibration between a generous commercial property owner, many local artist, and our Warrenton viewing public. We transferred an empty space to a spirited gallery! Over the last 25 years of Warrenton life, I’ve participated in multiple events for a variety of causes, simply because it’s my nature to make a difference in my corner of the world. Vital growing local business drives the overall well-being of our community, both economically and from the perspective of providing services to its citizens. I have therefore chosen to spend my discretionary time promoting small local business and long term balanced growth, with a view towards fostering a future for our children, and their children. For our commuters, which are 65%

of our county residents--do your best to shop local, dine local and play locally. I wish we had more employment here for you. I know it’s a tough commute, but you’re living here for a reason, so bring us your friends and relatives, and allow us to introduce them to the charm of small town living. For other town residents, just keep up the good work! If there’s one thing I learned from my Native American heritage and my student teaching at the Onondaga Indian Reservation in Syracuse, it’s the merit and value of appreciating each person’s unique contribution to the enhancement--and advancement--of our community. Teamwork makes the dream work! www.sunnyforavoice.com sunny@sunnyforavoice.com 540-349-0040

60 and Growing:

The Warrenton Chorale In December 2013, the Warrenton Chorale celebrated their 60th Anniversary with three acclaimed concerts. Selected pieces from these concerts are available for you to listen on You Tube and Facebook. One might think at this point, we have done enough, let us just sit back and enjoy the rest. Not the Warrenton Chorale, who continues to attract new singers from the area. The Chorale has an expanded vision of bringing excellent choral music programs to the community. The Chorale’s Artistic Director and Music Committee have decided to embark on a very ambitious program for their Spring concert. The Chorale will perform two concerts. The performance dates are Saturday - April 26th - and Sunday- April 27th - at 3 p.m. at the Warrenton Methodist Church. The concert program is a challenge to all the singers and will be a delight to our audiences. The concerts will feature 6 and 8 part choral works that showcase the wonderful ensemble sound of the Chorale. Other works will feature the Chorale accompanists on piano and organ ,along with flute, trumpets and percussion. Four familiar spirituals with soloists from the Chorale will get the spirit moving. These include “This Little Light of Mine”; “Steal Away”; “My Soul’s Been Anchored” and “Elijah Rock”. There will be a surprise “guest soloist”, Louis Gramby, Jr., who will provide a special

addition to the Chorale, this is a voice the audience will be excited hear, probably for the first time. As always, the Chorale’s well-known Handbell Ensemble will ring several major arrangements. These will demonstrate exceptional skill in the art of English Handbell ringing. Accomplishing a 60-year milestone is wonderful. Looking forward to an even more exciting musical future is a challenge that the Chorale wholeheartedly embraces. Come and celebrate what we have already performed. Watch us grow as we continue to offer musical delights to our regional residents. Upward and onward is the way the Warrenton Chorale will proceed. The Chorale will continue to bring wonderful music to those who reside in the area; come from other counties or even other States. Bring your children and all your family. Ask a neighbor, invite a friend to welcome the refreshing and rejuvenating season of Spring. We promise you will have an uplifting and joyful experience. You may even leave humming , tapping your feet or clapping your hands, possibly all three, after the final note has been played. We promise your Saturday or Sunday afternoon will be worth the time you have spent with the Warrenton Chorale.

“The Civil War Years in Fauquier County” Saturday, April 12, 2014, 12 Noon Warrenton Visitors Center Tickets $15 includes light fare and lecture Purchase day of lecture at Visitors Center

“The Civil War Years in Fauquier County” is the first in a series of lectures to be given by the Mosby Museum. Please arrive at the Visitors Center by noon where you can chat with Eugene Scheel, noted historian, author and mapmaker, and enjoy a light fare prior to his presentation. We are pleased to have Mr. Scheel join us on our first in a series of lectures to be held at the Mosby Museum. Eugene is the author of 9 books on Virginia including The Civil War in Fauquier County which is now out of print but available at public libraries. When searching for a historical map of our area of Northern Virginia, you will probably come across the more than 50 historical maps of Virginia, other States and countries drawn by Mr. Scheel. Of these, two are Mosby maps: “Mosby’s Confederacy,” (1995) and “Mosby – J.S.M. Heritage Area,” (1996). The latter map and 3 other Fauquier maps are still in print. These maps will be available for purchase for those attending the lecture. The Virginia Historical Society has likened Eugene to Jedediah Hotchkiss, the

62

famous mapmaker noted for his detailed, accurate and artistic maps of the Shenandoah Valley which some say contributed to Jackson’s victory in the Valley Campaign of 1862. Mr. Scheel, a Marine Corps veteran, worked for Rand McNally and then The National Geographic Magazine. He wrote a column on history for rural editions of The Washington Post but had to suspend his column when he became a Loudoun County Commissioner. For 41 years, he has taught area history to Loudoun County school teachers. Last fall his course filled up 8 minutes after it was announced on the internet. Additionally, he is a frequent contributor to The Portolan Journal published by The Washington Map Society. Eugene has a B.A., in Geography from Clark University, a Masters in Urban and Environmental Planning from University of Virginia and a Masters in American Literature from Georgetown University. He has resided in Piedmont Virginia for 49 years and continues to run cattle on a farm near Waterford.

Warrenton Lifestyle

One of Warrenton’s favored takeout joints, known for their quick turn around on orders, friendly customer service and massive menu, continues to serve residents Szechuan, Hunan and Cantonese style dishes. Owner Qiao Zhang, saw a need for a quality Chinese food restaurant that served at a fast pace. The restaurant itself is quite small but very comfortable; it invites conversation among guests as they wait in line to pick up. It is not unusual to hear guests comment on local high school sports, the weather or even their preferred dish. Tops is a top choice for lunch during the workweek or dinner at home with the family. On any given day around lunchtime, you’ll see a line almost out of the door; loyal customers wait patiently to pick up their favorite dishes. This restaurant offers twentyeight lunch specials between the hours of 11:00am to 3:00pm that are all under $5. Each special is served with your choice of pork fried rice or white rice and wonton; egg drop or hot & sour soup; or an egg roll or soda. The Chicken Chow Mein and Chicken with Cashew Nut are popular as well as the spicy Kung Pao Chicken. Also notable is the Roast Pork Egg Foo Young and Moo Goo Gai Pan. “You can’t beat their fast turnaround for lunch, especially during the work week,” one guest commented while in line. “Not to mention the quantity of food you’re getting for five bucks.” Venturing from their lunch menu, guests will find expansive offerings with well over one hundred dishes to indulge in. Start with the House Fried Rice or the Vegetable Fried Rice, both are flavorful and an excellent addition to all other dishes on the menu. Some of the most popular items are the Chef’s Specialties including the General Tao’s Chicken with lightly fried chicken toss in an amazingly sweet, spicy sauce with broccoli. The Hawaiian Five “O” has an unusual mix but is quite tasty with

scallops, shrimp, lobster, pork, chicken and A-1 sauce. Seared sliced beef sautéed in a hot sauce with baby corn, red peppers and scallions makes their savory Hunan Beef. “I highly recommend the Harvest Chicken & Shrimp, it’s got the perfect mixture of ingredients,” another guest chimed-in as they walked out the door. The dish has fresh baby shrimp and tender chicken sautéed with a variety of bright vegetables in a brown sauce. Under Special Combination Plates there are twentyone popular items that come accompanied with pork fried rice and an egg roll; an excellent value. The rest of the menu has traditional gotos like Sweet & Sour Chicken, Beef with Broccoli and Lo Mein. Tops China is located at 185 West Lee Highway near Coldstone Creamery and Jerry’s Subs and Pizza. They are open seven days a week Monday through Thursday 10:30am to 10:00pm, Friday and Saturday 10:30am to 11:00pm and Sunday 11:00am to 10:00pm. Relax and take a seat inside with your favorite people or call ahead if you are in a hurry. For questions on the menu or to place your order give them a call at (540)349-2828.
