— The Story of Briyanna’s Arrival —

10 fingers.10 toes. 24 years in the making. When you wait 24 years between pregnancies, you give yourself the chance to create the perfect experience for you and your baby. And that’s exactly what Andrea Brown did. When she discovered she was expecting her second child, she interviewed physicians and toured a lot of hospitals. Andrea immediately felt a connection with Dr. Thomas Myers, an OB/GYN at Fauquier. And she was very impressed with the facility, as well. “I felt like I was in my own private hotel suite,” Andrea recalls. On the big day, Andrea arrived and was greeted by a labor and delivery staff who was there for her every step of the way. “They were my angels,” Andrea remembers. And at 9:36am, another angel entered Andrea’s life: An 8 lbs. 11oz. bundle of joy named Briyanna. What You’ve All Been Waiting For!

T

his issue marks the beginning of our sixth year of publishing The Warrenton Lifestyle magazine. It is our largest issue to date and, hopefully, one of our best. We have a few major announcements this month besides the Best Of winners. First, Krysta Norman of Warrenton has joined our staff as Publications Manager. Krysta will direct much of the writing, photography, editing, and production of our publications. She has written for our magazine several times in the past few years while working as a graphic artist in Middleburg. Second, we are pleased to announce the Haymarket Lifestyle magazine that will launch in September. Haymarket is a terrific community that we believe would benefit from the talents that our team will bring to their businesses and residents each month. Third, Virginia Hendrix has joined our team as the account executive for western Prince William County, specifically for Haymarket Lifestyle. We have known and worked with her for many years and believe she has already become a wonderful representative for our company. Finally, the Town of Warrenton has approved the site plans for the Fun For All Playground and that the groundbreaking will be announced shortly. While the majority of the funds have been raised, there is still a need for contributions to finalize the project. The committee thinks that the playground might be ready for September. What a wonderful gift we have given to the children in our community of all abilities!

This month, we are pleased to present the winners in the fifth annual Best of Warrenton Awards competition. Thousands of readers either took the time to complete a ballot online or returned a printed ballot from the magazine to select this year’s favorites. We have asked our readers to share with us the best businesses, people, places and organizations of our greater Warrenton area in 83 categories. Your responses are as diverse as they are plentiful and we applaud the time you took to call out your favorites. Our chief mission at The Warrenton Lifestyle Magazine is to give greater exposure to our businesses and organizations to the people that live here, over half of whom are commuters, without promoting their competition from other tax bases. We continue to give background on many of the winners even though some are decade-old establishments. In addition, we publish runners-up that received a significant percentage of the votes because they demonstrate that we do have choices here. National chains, family stores, new shops and longtime landmarks were all winners again. The Best AllAround Restaurant category received votes for 40 different

restaurants. Many categories had winners by only a handful of votes. This illustrates why we consider the Best Of list as just a “slice” of the thousands of wonderful businesses, places, and people we have to offer. People will debate the winners. Most important is that local residents have an opinion and get to voice their passion for our great Town and region. In no categories were the winners anywhere near unanimous. In others, there were tightly contested races that came down to the final days. There were some great surprises, but in our opinion, no real disappointments. So, whether you agree or disagree with the voting public, please take the time to discover your own local favorites for next year. It might be somewhere you have not even heard of until today. Moreover, we are going to continue to explore our ever-changing community with you. Thank you to our team at Piedmont Press & Graphics, especially to Mike Tedeschi who meticulously entered all of the paper ballots while managing the online survey and to you, the readers of The Warrenton Lifestyle Magazine, for caring enough to vote.

History

Warrenton Under Union Occupation Conditions changed as the War dragged on

C

by John Toler

ivilians living in Warrenton were deeply affected by the Civil War, even before the opening skirmish at Fairfax Courthouse on June 1, 1861, where Capt. John Quincy Marr lost his life. The War came even closer with the First Battle of Manassas in July, where the Black Horse Cavalry fought with distinction, and almost everyone back in Warrenton helped care for the hundreds of wounded soldiers brought to makeshift hospitals in homes and churches. But Union forces did not enter Fauquier County until March 15, 1862, after Confederate forces gave up their positions at Centreville. From that point on, Warrenton was open to occupation, a condition that would last until the end of the Civil War. It is estimated that control of the town changed hands 67 times before the War was over. Fortunately, Warrenton was spared bombardment and the sword, but during the periods of Union occupation, residents had to deal with the comings-and-goings of the Union troops who stayed in Warrenton for a time, or merely passed through on their way to somewhere else. For about 18 months after the first Union troops entered Fauquier, most of the fighting was taking place elsewhere, leaving the civilian populace to struggle with shortages and the absence of their menfolk. 6

Warrenton street scene during the Civil War occupation by Union troops (Harper’s Magazine).

But at least they were spared the violence of battle. By following established rules of engagement and keeping their distance, soldiers of the occupation force and residents maintained an uneasy peace. Through letters home and other correspondence, Union troops described their impressions of Warrenton during this time.

“We are now in Eastern Virginia or ‘Old Virginia,’ a beautiful country, but I should say not remarkably fertile. I never saw more picturesque scenery than during the last three days. “It presents a peculiarity that you would not anticipate. That is the population is sparse, a few fine residences, and more squalid ones indicates the accompaniment to the Passing through ‘Old Virginia’ farm residences of Negro quarters. ‘The New York Ninth’

During the summer of 1862, Warrenton was occupied by elements of Union Maj. Gen. John C. Pope’s Department of the Army of Virginia, which included the Ninth New York State Militia. Military commander of the force that occupied Warrenton

Pvt. Frederick B. Dailey of Co. L, to help him, and when they could not find any paper to feed through their single-sheet press, they got a supply from Washington, D.C. They called their newspaper The New York Ninth, and according to their published mission statement, the objective of the newspaper was “…to furnish a medium of communication

no less charitable describing the fall of Memphis, saying the city “…was neither burnt down nor battered down. She was rammed down.” Taking a shot at its local predecessor, The New York Ninth described the Warrenton Whig in the form of an obituary, reading “...now defunct. At the time of its death, it was a rabid secesh sheet. Before the

was a Col. Stiles, and after the main body of troops had moved on, the main duties of the men of the Ninth were performing provost (military police) activities, loading rail cars and tending to the hospitals as they were being moved to the rear. With the onset of hostilities, regular newspaper publication in Warrenton ceased. Pvt. John W. Jacques of Co. D stumbled upon the shuttered office of the Warrenton Whig on Main Street, and decided to start a newspaper for his outfit. Amidst the debris in the office Jacques found a hand-operated printing press and type, and began searching around the town for ink and paper. He enlisted 10

It will be published weekly from the office on Main Street, two doors below the Warrenton House, so long as the Regiment continues to be stationed within this place, or vicinity.” Their ambitious commitment only lasted for two issues, dated July 31 and Aug. 7, 1862. While the first issue was relatively chatty and unbiased, the second was more like Army propaganda, including a few swipes at the enemy. These included such barbs as, “There is said to be very little bread in the rebel Confederacy: few loaves, but a great many loafers.” The newspaper

War, it used to wear this sentiment at the head of its columns: ‘The Union: May It Last forever.’” Local news appearing in The New York Ninth included several other obituaries, including a reference to a Col. Thomas A. Ziegle of the 107th Pennsylvania Volunteers who died on July 15, 1862, and was buried in the Warrenton Cemetery. Other members of the Union occupation force who apparently passed away and were buried in the cemetery included Pvt. Austin Shelden of Pennsylvania; Pvt. Walter Barber of Massachusetts, and Pvts. Broacham and Charles Streeter, of New York. The few obituaries for local people published in The New York Ninth revealed that the writers knew little or nothing about them. In an attempt to be familiar, they included in the obituary for Jim Bangs, stating “He left a wife, eight children, a cow, four horses, a grocery store and other quadrupeds to mourn his loss,” and ended with the obscure epitaph, “... his loss is their eternal gain.” One of the more interesting notices was an advertisement offering a reward of $15 for the return of a U.S. Cavalry horse “...missing or stolen from the street in front of the Warrenton House on Tuesday, July 22.” The mount was described as “...a large bay horse seven years old with short black main and tail,” and belonging to Commissary Sgt. Fitzhugh Smith of the Ninth New York. The final issue noted that “The army has advanced, but where to, in what force, and for what purpose, is more than we know.” Within weeks, the

regiment would be fighting at Cedar Mountain near Culpeper, and later, at the Second Battle of Manassas.

The conduct of the War changes

The soldier-journalists of the Ninth New York would soon find out “where to, and in what force,” as Union and Confederate soldiers clashed along the Rappahannock River at Fauquier Springs (Aug. 22-25, 1862), and at Thoroughfare Gap (Aug. 28, 1862). But these actions were just the prelude to the epic Second Battle of Manassas on Aug. 28-30, 1862, which resulted in over 22,000 casualties, two-thirds of whom were Union troops. The effects of Second Manassas were felt on the Warrenton home front, where the town was flooded with wounded soldiers from both sides, and a number of local men were among the killed, wounded or missing. The Town of Warrenton was once again spared a direct hit. But subtle, insidious changes followed,

as the occupation forces became more suspicious of the civilians who embraced the Southern cause, and began to exercise the Union War Department Executive Order issued at the end of July 1862, which authorized Union commanders to “...seize and use any property, real or personal, which may be necessary or convenient, for supplies and other military purposes.” Added to this situation was a more direct threat of violence: the emergence of bands of “renegades,” deserters and stragglers, who in the absence of civilian authority terrorized the local citizenry, especially in the countryside. The occupation forces’ days of casual camp life were over until the end of the War, and hope for an early victory and the chance of a return to something close to normal for either side – especially for those living in “The Debatable Land” were shattered. There would be nearly three more years of war, and the people of Warrenton and the surrounding areas would see more death and devastation. They would witness some positive signs, like Union Gen. George B. McClellan’s the removal from command, the public face of which was his address to his troops from the porch of the warrant Green Hotel on Nov. 11, 1862. But more importantly, the following March, Warrenton resident Capt. John S. Mosby formed Co. A, 43rd Battalion, Virginia Cavalry, his band of Partisan Rangers, who were actively supported and supplied by Warrenton residents for the duration of the War – often right under the noses of the occupation forces – and the rules of the occupation were changed again..

Miracle Boy

24 Years in the Making

Pediatrician Dr. Joshua Jakum talks about his recovery from ACL surgery. After an operation and a few months of rehabilitation, Dr. Jakum is back on the lacrosse field, coaching his sons’ Fauquier Youth Lacrosse League team.

Tyen Tackett was rushed to the Emergency Department after he swallowed a 1½ inch bolt that lodged in his throat. Get the story from his mom, Vicki Tackett, and see how Tyen is doing now.

Andrea Brown recently welcomed a beautiful baby girl. She is a new mom… but not really. She also had a baby 24 years ago. View her video to see how her experience at the Fauquier Hospital Family Birthing Center differed from the first time she gave birth.

Medical Crisis Leads to Happy Ending This is the story of young Tyen Tackett, who is featured in a video about his experience in the Fauquier Health Emergency Department. Shortly after laying her 3-year-old son Tyen down for a nap, Vicki Tackett of Warrenton found him standing in his crib gagging and vomiting. By the time emergency workers arrived at the home, Tyen was limp, blue and barely breathing. In the Emergency Department at Fauquier Hospital, Maureen Lieb, RN, thought she saw something lodged in Tyen’s throat. Dr. William Barker remembers, “I reached in with forceps and was able to pull it out. The X-rays showed an inch and a half-long bolt in his throat, positioned straight up and down, but when I pulled it out it was wedged in sideways, behind the base of his tongue.” Vicki Tackett is grateful to the emergency rescue workers, Dr. Barker, and the staff at Fauquier Hospital for saving Tyen’s life. “They were wonderful. One of the nurses gave me a hug. It’s what I needed more than anything. The hardest part was not knowing what to do for him, but it wasn’t too long after I got to Fauquier Hospital that I knew he was going to be OK.” Visit www.fauquierhealth.org for a complete listing of classes and events at Fauquier Health 16

“Volunteering” is a fancy term for what used to be called “lending a hand.”

When I was about six years old, my mother sent me to a neighbor to help her clean her chicken coop. I was “volunteering” with a gentle nudge from my mother. However, as time passed, I found myself asking my neighbor if she needed any help. The spirit of volunteering had been infused into my impressionable young veins. “Volunteering” is a fancy term for what used to be called “lending a hand.” In colonial times, it might have taken the form of “barn raising” or “quilting bees.” These were informal get-togethers resulting from a desire to make a difference in the life of someone 18

else. Current research shows that the desire to give of one’s time and effort is cultivated in childhood and during the early teenage years. Men and women who receive this inculcation are twice as likely to volunteer as adults. Volunteering and democracy go hand in hand. Alexis de Tocqueville, a French nobleman who visited this nation during its formation, concluded that “the health of a democratic society may be measured by the quality of functions performed by private citizens.” Every religion of the world encourages charity and service to others. An almost

incomprehensible feeling of content develops within the volunteer. Isaiah in 58:10-11 said, “If you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness and your night will become like the noonday.” The common denominator is the desire to help, this spurred on by a deep feeling of caring – the wish to make a difference in the life of someone else. What is the dollar value of volunteer time? How does one measure the benefit received by the community? Community continued on page 20 Warrenton Lifestyle

Community continued from page 18 Research suggests that volunteering through non-profit organizations in America is equivalent to nine million full-time jobs. But results from various studies are conflicting, so it may be better to measure in quality than quantity. Do we need additional volunteers in our community? Call any local organization and ask them if they have enough help at the present time. You know the answer, don’t you? You have no time? Everyone has exactly the same 24 hours in a day. You think you have no skills, no knowledge, no inherent abilities? Qualifications for volunteering are measured more in attitude than experience. Imagine our community without volunteers – only paid professionals. No volunteers coaching in any kind of sports. No Scoutmasters for our growing boys. No Girl Scout leaders for our developing girls. No school chaperones or volunteer teacher aides. No volunteers in our hospitals handling the information desk, the gift shop, or wheelchair transport. No cheerful Candy Stripers. No church choir members or outreach ambassadors. It is a dismal scene begging to be addressed before it becomes a reality. Even if you have never volunteered for anything before, it is the easiest thing in the world. You can start by asking the local library for lists of organizations. Be good to yourself and the community. Perhaps due to physical disabilities you are not able to leave your home. Many a financial campaign has succeeded primarily through the stuffing and stamping of envelopes at a kitchen table. And volunteering is often a stepping stone to employment. If you are looking for a job or are retired and bored, go where the action is – volunteer. I feel the need to pass on the realization that volunteering is fun. I cannot exist without volunteering. It is in my blood. Perhaps even more than my profession, it helps to define 20

2010

Here are your favorites, the best of the best. And we are proud to add that they are all part of our hometown. Over 75,000 individual choices were made on almost 2,300 ballots submitted. Those receiving the most votes in each category are listed in red. The honorable mentions, those receiving a large percentage of the votes, are listed in alphabetical order. Celebrate with your favorites, try out others that your peers have chosen, and plan on voting next year for those deserving people and organizations that did not make this year’s list.

BEST FOOD Best All-Around Restaurant Claire’s at the Depot

For the third consecutive year, Claire’s at the Depot is the Warrenton Lifestyle Magazine’s big winner. Claire’s at the Depot has not only been voted Best All-Around Restaurant in Warrenton four years running now, but the restaurant has also been voted the winner of two other restaurant categories: Best Fine Dining and Best Place for a Business Lunch. Claire’s menu features delectable appetizers and an array of hearty dishes, not to mention an extensive wine list. To add to the impressive résumé, Claire’s has been voted the Best Caterer in Warrenton for 2010 (third year in a row), providing their clients and guests not only with impressive service, hors d’oeuvres, and platters, but also help with invitations, rentals and locations. To top it all off, Claire’s for the second year won Best Wait Staff for 2010. Claire’s is located on South Third Street down from Christine Fox. Honorable Mention: Black Bear Bistro, The Iron Bridge Wine Company, Outback

Best Asian Food Faang Thai Restaurant

The kitchen boasts over 20 years of experience in dining, and the bar features California wines among other liquors. Faang is located on West Lee Highway near the Verizon Wireless store. Honorable Mention: China Jade, Mandarin Buffet, Top’s China, Waterloo Café Top’s China, Waterloo Café 22

Best Bakery/Desserts Red Truck Bakery

Because their location was so new last year, Red Truck didn’t even garner enough votes for an honorable mention in last year’s competition. That wouldn’t be the case again this year as Red Truck has received the award for Best Bakery/ Desserts. Located at 22 Waterloo Street next to the Courthouse (look for the old red truck parked outside), the bakery offers a variety of sandwiches, soups, breads, goodies and more. Red Truck features their regular items as well as specials throughout the year. Be sure to check out their Sour Cream Coffee Cake, Double-chocolate Moonshine Cake, or Island Rum Cake. Red Truck Bakery also received an honorable mention for Best Coffee. Honorable Mention: Café Torino, Great Harvest Bread Company, Panera

For the fifth consecutive year, Carousel wins the award for the best ice cream in Warrenton. Owners Dennis Bachetti and Carl Norskog have created a festive atmosphere to serve ice cream with all the modern toppings in a somewhat nostalgic setting. There is a reason why there are long lines on weekend nights (don’t worry, they move fast) – people are willing to wait for the reward at the end of the rainbow. Don’t forget they offer hot dogs, French fries, and, according to the Publisher, “the best corn dogs on the planet!” Carousel is located in Waterloo Station. Community Arts

Twinkle Toes photos left/right by Krysta Norman

Ballet in Warrenton by Krysta Norman Warrenton has been the home to prominent ballet schools for over 10 years now. These schools and their talented students have been performing for our community, nationally, and soon internationally. Each school offers a different teaching syllabus as well as style but they have provided our community with poised and confident individuals. 54

The Ballet Academy of Warrenton Directed by Linda Voelpel, The Ballet Academy of Warrenton is focused on the teaching of classical ballet using the Russian Method. For over 100 years this teaching style has produced prominent world-class dancers. “The Russian Method is known

for its use of the upper body and the turning of the torso which allows for more expression and looks elegant, Voelpel said. Classical ballet is the most disciplined and demanding form but once accomplished it has proven to be the most rewarding by transferring their skills to other dance forms. Ballet continued from page 54 Technique is immensely important and the school provides physiology education and ballet history to perfect it. These two subjects combined help the dancers understand their body’s movement as well as the history behind ballet. While the Ballet Academy of Warrenton implements the foundations of classical ballet it establishes important characteristics for their students. Students practicing at this academy can expect to learn to work hard, to find dedication for higher achievements, to cooperatively work in a team environment, to exercise creative thinking skills, as well as develop self-confidence, personal integrity and self-assurance. Students at this academy will have the experience to dance in theatre performances. They are involved with the Fauquier Community Theatre and have performed in the D.C. Cherry Blossom Festival and were invited back to perform Peter and the Wolf. “We encourage artistry, it is a performing art, Voelpel exclaimed! For A Dancer For A Dancer brings students an alternative approach to ballet. Students are taught the fundamentals and classic techniques in a fun and energizing environment. This school utilizes many syllabi in their teaching methods to benefit the dancer as a whole. Director Rachel Good believes, “By teaching different methods this helps to create a well rounded dancer.” Students are exposed to these varying

methods and will have the foundation and knowledge to expand upon them or use them in order dance forms. Fun and self-expression are important there, especially with their younger students. “We are different from other schools, in that when our students are young we teach technique but they can play and have fun and as they get older it’s more technique focusing on making them strong ballet dancers,” Good said. Dedicated to their students this school offers a variety of classes for different levels including a special needs class. Class sizes are limited to provide individual instruction and attention for each student. Music selections are age appropriate but more importantly relatable to students. Dancers could be rocking to hits from the 80’s, Hannah Montana or the Twilight Series. Shannon Sympson, a 13 year old

dancer has been dancing with For a Dancer, for 10 years, she said “As we are learning we are having fun at the same time!” They also have a fierce competition team that practices year round to compete and perform all over the country. There dancers are dedicated and held to strict academic guidelines, all must maintain a B average during the school year. “We provide a fun and safe environment, it’s not unusual to see kids doing homework in between classes to keep their grades up,” Good said. For A Dancer provides a safe and fun place for their students to grow and learn. For more information about For A Dancer please visit their website at www.foradancerinc.com.

This frustrating experience is known as reaching a fitness plateau. Don’t let a plateau of your workouts is a great way to progress your personal discourage you! Follow the tips below to put your body fitness program and push through plateaus. If you have been exercising for 30 minutes, three times per week, back on the forward track. try going up to 45 minutes, three times per week. If you 1.) Keep Your Body Guessing have been walking, pick up the pace to a light jog. If you consistently perform the same types of exercises, 4.) Get Inspired! Consider Training for a you will consistently see the same results. Keep your Fitness Event body guessing by introducing different types of physical Training for a special event or activity is a great way activities. If you always use the elliptical machine or to stay inspired and take your fitness routine to the next stationary bike, for example, try a group fitness class or running outdoors instead. Vary your workouts weekly for level. Consider joining a sports league or registering yourself for a charity race. optimal results. 2.) Check your Diet

5.) Make Sure you are Getting Enough Rest

Keep a food journal for a week or two and take a good look at the types of foods and amounts you are putting into your body. It is easy to pick up small habits that add up to big calories (such as drinking iced mochas instead of black coffee in the summer months and snacking on handfuls of popcorn and candy at the movie theatre).

Too much exercise can also lead to fitness plateaus if your body is tired and burned out—so be sure not to overdo it. The quality of your workouts is much more important than the quantity. Also be sure you are getting enough sleep so that muscles have time to recover between workouts and you have the strength and energy to perform at your best.

A fitness plateau is simply our body’s way of telling us it is time for a change--so go ahead, mix it up! Kim Forsten owns and operates Old Town Athletic Club, Parisi Speed School and Warrenton Pilates. Ms. Forsten has been a certified personal trainer, master group fitness trainer, master step instructor and certified nutritionist since 2000. Her specialty certifications include pilates, senior fitness, pre/post natal exercise, Body Training Systems, and Zumba, to name a few. Fauquier is free. Visit them on the web at Families4fauquier.com. We have three businesses that are busy trying to get ready for opening and one that is closing. Trailers Plus will be coming to the New Baltimore area, where Taylor Boyz once was and Angels of Beauty will be opening a new day spa in one of the spaces near Ledo’s. Last month I incorrectly wrote that Play N Trade Video Games was open, but they are still working on the space and I will let you know when they are really ready. Lastly, Real Woods & Home Furnishings near the Safeway will be closing and is having a closing sale. They say everything must go Businesses are moving into new spaces also, Dr. Lorraine Chun has moved her OB/GYN practice to the medical building on Veterans Drive and acupuncturist, Sarah Steed has moved her practice to Old Town Warrenton. Be Boutique has moved across to the other side of Main Street into the old Blue Ridge Hardware building. Barbara now has a much larger space that gives her more room for new items. She has a great colorful clothing selection and some wonderful jewelry at very reasonable prices. Stop in, say hello and check out the new items. While you are there ask about the Chic Rewards card that can also be used at other participating City Masterkey Merchants in town like Hartman Jewelers, Frame Craft, Salon Emage and more. Think of that, just one card to carry for all those reward purchases. Country Cookin’ now has a premium breakfast buffet on the weekends, with lots of goodies to choose from and an omelet bar. If you are really feeling the heat and need to cool down, J&D Handyman has just added a new service to their business, they now install and service both in ground and above ground pools. Now that is a great thought. Enjoy the rest of the summer! Amy Griffin is the owner of inFauquier.com, a comprehensive online directory of consumer businesses located in Fauquier County. Maps to all the businesses can be found at inFauquier.com and check out the What’s New page for more business happenings in the entire county. You can reach her at (540)347-4922 or amy@inFauquier.com with your questions or any tidbits you hear about local business. Warrenton Lifestyle
