This issue marks the beginning of our seventh year of publishing The Warrenton Lifestyle magazine. It is equal to our largest issues to date. I’d like to thank Krysta Norman, our Managing Editor, for helping us take this publication in her first full year with us to another level as well as helping launch our sister publication, Haymarket Lifestyle. Krysta directs much of the writing, photography, editing, and production. Kudos to our Account Executive, Cindy McBride, for the first-class assistance she provides to our advertisers. Cindy has taken over the duties in Haymarket, too, and already made a difference there. In the near future, I will introduce you to the rest of our crew to show you what goes into putting out this publication every month. This month, we are pleased to present the winners in the sixth annual Best of Warrenton Awards competition. Over 5,100 readers either took the time to complete a ballot online or returned a printed ballot from the magazine to select this year’s favorites. We have asked our readers to share with us the best businesses, people, places and organizations of our greater Warrenton area in 77 categories. Your responses are as diverse as they are plentiful and we applaud the time you took to call out your favorites. People will debate the winners and that is a good thing! It means we have choices. Many of my favorites did not win. That’s okay, too, because we continue to publish runners-up that received a significant percentage of the votes. The Best All-Around Restaurant category received votes for 61 different restaurants. Many categories had winners by only a handful of votes. This illustrates why we consider the Best Of list as just a “slice” of the thousands of wonderful businesses, places, and people we have to offer.

In no categories were the winners anywhere near unanimous. In some, there were tightly contested races that came down to the final days. There were a few great surprises, but in our opinion, no real disappointments. So, whether you agree or disagree with the voting public, please take the time to discover some new local favorites for next year. It might be a place you have not even heard of until today. Check our pages monthly; we are going to continue exploring our community for you. A Warrenton Family’s Unique Experience Devoted parents made a home, raised two sons in the Old Jail By John T. Toler Growing up in Warrenton during the 1940s and 1950s was very different from the way it is today, and actually living on Courthouse Square during those times would have certainly added to the experience. But calling the 1808 Fauquier County Jail your home for nearly ten years was certainly unusual. But a family once lived in the Old Jail, with the parents running the facility and raising a family there. Career law enforcement officer Turner Grimsley (19111970), his wife Jean (born in 1921) and sons Turner Eugene (1941-2004) and Joseph O. (born in 1942) lived in the original brick-and-stone part of the jail – which they converted to living quarters – from 1944 to 1954. This branch of the Grimsley family has called Fauquier County home for generations. Joe’s grandfather, Joseph Barnett Grimsley, was from the Free State, and was married to the former Annie Fewell. They lived at the old homeplace on Meetze Road. “Their big white house was across the road from the old 8

Meetze Station. It burned in 1931,” recalled Joe Grimsley, adding that his grandfather, a carpenter, helped build the facilities at Vint Hill Farms Station at the beginning of World War II. Turner Grimsley was born in the Free State, and worked for a while as a butcher in the old Anderson & Allison Grocery on Main Street. In the late 1930s, he began his career in law enforcement as one of Warrenton’s first police officers. “At the time, he had to provide his own uniforms, which he bought at the old Ullman Department Store on Lee Street,” said Joe Grimsley. In July 1940, Turner married the former Jean Huyett, of Brunswick, Missouri. Son Gene was born in October 1941, and Joe born 13 months later, in December 1942. With the opening of the large Army post at Vint Hill, housing was in extremely short supply in Warrenton. Old Jail continued on page 10 Warrenton Lifestyle

The family got a break in July 1944, when Stanley Wolfe, the outgoing county sheriff, offered Turner the position of deputy sheriff and county jailer. As part of the arrangement, the family would have housing and board at the jail. Turner would also continue to serve as a member of the Warrenton Police Department – a unique situation arising from the fact that while the county owned the jail, it was located in the center of town. Turner Grimsley quickly accepted the job. The family would live in the original brick-and-stone section facing Courthouse Square, separated from the 1823 cellblock by a narrow, high-walled alleyway. There was much to be done in the ancient structure before the family could move in. The two people previously in charge of jail under Town Sergeant “Pete” Shirley had left the place quite a mess. “Mom and Dad inspected the jail facilities on July 1, and knew they had a lot of work to do,” said Joe Grimsley.

“We finally moved in at 1 a.m. on Sept. 18, 1944.”

Life at the Old Jail Joe recalls that prisoners were usually brought in through the main door on the front of the building, which linedup with the door to the alley between the old jail and the cellblock. A small desk was located in the hallway, where prisoners were processed before being taken to the cellblock. The family lived in the rest of the twostory building, with the kitchen in the east wing, where it is today. Food for the family and the inmates was cooked in a coal-burning stove. The family’s dining room next to the kitchen, where the Old Jail Museum reception area is now located. On the other side of the main hallway and stairs was the living room. It was there where the family – as well as the judges and lawyers working in the nearby courthouse – would stop by to watch

their television set, one of the first in Warrenton. “Everybody that was anybody would show up,” recalls Joe. “Especially to watch a ballgame.” Upstairs above the dining room was the parents’ bedroom, and above the living room was the boys’ bedroom. The bathroom was located between the bedrooms, at the top of the stairs. Upstairs over the kitchen was what the boys called the “rat room,” a storage area where the barrels of food for the prisoners were kept. Rats could often be heard roaming about at night. “It was unreal!” Joe recalled. During the fall and winter, small coal stoves heated the living quarters. Coal was delivered in bulk, and stored in the narrow alleyway between the 1808 and 1823 structures. Under the arrangement with the county, Mrs. Grimsley would cook the meals for the prisoners, while her husband ran the jail. Since Turner was a town police officer as well as the jailer, he was often out walking his beat, leaving his wife in charge at the jail. “Mom never got paid a dime for preparing all those meals or running the jail,” recalled Joe Grimsley. “Not a dime.” Joe Grimsley recalls that while he was a jailor/patrolman, his father had access to two telephones while walking the beat: one beside the courthouse, and the other at the firehouse at Main and 4th streets. “The town installed the telephones at my mother’s insistence,” said Joe. “I have the old phone from the courthouse.” For a police officer, Turner was tolerant – to a point. “Daddy would cross the street to avoid running into a drunk, but if one yelled at him, he would throw him in jail,” explained Joe. And there were the “town drunks” he dealt with, who would show up at the jail, turning themselves in so that they could get a meal and a warm place to sleep. Their parents were very protective, and the Grimsley boys had little, if any contact with the prisoners while living at the jail. foolishness, irresponsibility and human tragedies that cause individuals to wind up in jail. While shielded from the worst, Joe Grimsley remembers that the cellblock was a dangerous place. When the jail was overcrowded – as it often was the morning after a wild Saturday night – Turner Grimsley would order the prisoners back from the cellblock door before opening it. He would then carry the food inside while his wife waited outside, armed with his handgun and ready to shoot anyone who tried to jump him or escape.

Growing up in Old Town Brothers Gene and Joe were close growing up, and “…we had lots of toys, usually two of everything,” recalled Joe. One of his favorite toys was a miniature pedal-driven fire truck that he would “drive” on the sidewalks around the jail. Once he disobeyed his father by crossing Main Street in his little truck, heading down the hill on to present-day Courthouse Square and running into a woman on the sidewalk across from the present-day county library. “She didn’t hear me ringing the bell, and I hit her,” Joe admitted. “I ran home, and when Daddy heard about it, he got me for ‘hit and run.’ And he wasn’t too happy about paying her doctor’s bill, either.” In the 1940s and early 1950s – before the development of the Bypass and the building of the Northern Virginia Shopping Center – the Town of Warrenton was defined by its original 12

business district. “Main Street was the main attraction,” according to Joe. For many people, the stores, movie theater, schools and churches were all within walking distance, an advantage the Grimsley family enjoyed to the fullest. “There was always something to do back then,” recalled Joe. “Like the movies on Saturday, when you could see your favorite serials, like ‘Rocket Man’ …it was so busy in town on Friday nights and Saturdays that they added some part-time officers to help direct the traffic at all of the intersections on Main Street.” The family attended St. James Episcopal Church, just down Culpeper Street. “Mother would give my brother and me each a dime for the collection plate at Sunday School, but we would stop at Pearson’s store (present-day site of an accounting firm’s office) and spend a nickel on candy and put a nickel in the collection plate,” said Joe Grimsley. “Rev. (Paul) Bowden (rector of St. James) caught me doing that, and had a sermon on it.” Joe got into trouble another time when he climbed up into a narrow window on the side of the old Fauquier National Bank building next to the jail and hid from his parents, who were frantically looking for him. “I looked down and there was a $10 bill lying there… that was the only reason I didn’t get my tail whipped when I came down.” Old Jail continued on page 14 Warrenton Lifestyle

boys would simply pop off the bottle caps, and drink the soda through a straw. Newt Corbin, who ran the service station, knew what was going on, but told the boys, “Don’t let me catch you doing that!” In the days when virtually everyone living in town knew everyone else, the boys had many friends. Joe would often accompany Randolph Sutphin on his grocery deliveries for the A&A Grocery in a 1949 Chevrolet sedan. Years later, at one of the car shows he had organized, Joe noticed a car that reminded him of the one used by Sutphin. He spoke with the owner, and learned it was the actual car he had ridden in on deliveries as a boy. In the late 1940s, Turner Grimsley helped recruit Luther Cox – who had originally come to Fauquier County as an MP (military policeman) at Vint Hill during World War II – for the position as Warrenton’s police chief. “It was a good fit,” recalled Joe Grimsley. “Luther was the chief, and his wife ran the movie theater.” Cox served as police chief until January 1954, when he took office as Fauquier County Sheriff, replacing the late Sam Hall, who retired. The Warrenton Town Council approached Turner Grimsley, and offered him the job. No longer a deputy, Chief Grimsley moved his family from the jail to the “Burroughs House” on Shirley Highway, and later to a house off Culpeper Street. He served as chief until stepping down in January 1961, at which time Hershel B. Jones was appointed chief. Turner Grimsley remained on the town police force, serving as a sergeant and patrolman until forced to retire due to failing health. He died in 1970.

in response to public outcry and citizen efforts to convert the jail to a museum. The county has retained ownership of the building and continues to be responsible for the exterior upkeep, while the Fauquier Historical Society maintains the interior and runs the Old Jail Museum. The building has seen extensive changes in the years since the Grimsleys lived there, all part of the effort to bring the building back to its early 19th century appearance. Changes included opening the original fireplaces, restoring the interior, and setting up displays in most of the rooms. Joe Grimsley notes that a window on the front has been brickedin, as well as the first-floor window on the side facing Ashby Street, where he used to “watch the action.”

On to the present day Gene Grimsley graduated from VMI in 1963 and served in the Army until retiring in 1969 as a full colonel. “Gene could have stayed in the Army longer and retired as a general, but that would have meant that he could be recalled,” explained Joe. “Besides, 30 years was enough.” Gene returned to Warrenton after winding up a career that included serving in Vietnam and other overseas and stateside posts. He died on Aug. 13, 2004. Joe enlisted in the U.S. Navy in October 1960 at age 17, serving until discharged in November 1963. He returned home to Warrenton, where he worked at Sanders Quarry, and spent his evenings working on peoples’ cars, operating out of the back of a station wagon where he kept his tools. In 1977, he and Vince Linthicum opened Vince and Joe’s Warrenton Sunoco on Shirley Highway, offering auto repair and Sunoco products. Realizing that there was little profit in gas and oil, the two men closed the business and moved to

a new shop dedicated exclusively to auto repair on Sullivan Street above Broadview Avenue in 1979. Joe bought out Vince in 1981, establishing Joe’s Servic enter Inc. The business has continued to grow, and now has eight employees. Joe has built a customer base on his reputation, spread by word-of-mouth and repeat business. He still puts in long hours: “When you own a business, it’s not 8-to-4 or 9-to-5.” Joe notes that one of his first customers was a couple traveling from New Jersey who came to his garage when the timing chain on their vehicle broke. They later moved to Fauquier County, and even after moving to Fairfax, they remained his customers. “In fact, her car is in here today,” he remarked recently. When Joe’s customers enter the lobby area, they are treated to displays of Old Warrenton memorabilia, models of vintage cars and trucks (including some from Joe’s drag racing days) and a television playing 1950s and 1960s TV western programs. One of the back rooms is decorated as a 1950s snack bar, complete with a working jukebox and booth. Out in the shop, however, everything is hi-tech, from the diagnostic tools to the computer programs used to access detailed repair information for virtually every car and truck on the road. The property, including the shop and storage lots across the street, is monitored by a state-of-the-art security system. Recalling the past at Joe’s is enjoyable, but in the present, it’s all business. Author John Toler is a writer and historian and has served Fauquier County for over 50 years, including 4 decades with the Fauquier-Times Democrat. He has written and lectured about many legendary characters in Fauquier County’s history. Toler is the co-author of 250 Years in Fauquier County: A Virginia Story, and author of Warrenton, Virginia: A History of 200 Years.

Fauquier Health New OB/GYN Physician Joins Fauquier Health Obstetricians/gynecologists Wesley Hodgson, M.D. and Dr. Lorraine Chun, M.D. have joined forces at Fauquier Health OB/ GYN on Hospital Hill. Dr. Hodgson will begin seeing patients in August, after serving eight years active duty in the military, four of those as an OB/GYN physician at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Dr. Hodgson is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. “Camp Lejeune was a very busy place for a community hospital,” Dr. Hodgson says. “The staff delivers more than 2,000 babies each year, so the pace is always hectic. It was an excellent training ground.” Dr. Hodgson’s military experience also taught lessons in compassion. At Camp Lejeune, he took care of hundreds of patients who were affected by the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. “So many of our moms who were delivering were alone because their husbands were deployed,” Dr. Hodgson explains. “That really brings a whole new element to a pregnancy because it involves so many more stressors.” Dr. Hodgson’s passion for obstetrics and gynecology developed during medical school. “I was very enthusiastic about every specialty, but OB really stood out for me. First, it was the one area in the hospital where, even though there are often emergencies, there are so many happy endings, which was very appealing to me. Family Birthing Center Since the inauguration of the O’Shaughnessy Family Birthing Center at Fauquier Hospital, expectant mothers have delivered their babies in a welcoming, family-centered atmosphere, attended by highly trained and qualified staff. Almost 900 little ones were welcomed into the world at Fauquier Hospital last year. The birthing center has recently added expanded nursing coverage by a team of neonatal nurse practitioners. They can provide expert care to newborns every day, as well as more advanced training to the nursing staff. In the Family Birthing Center mothers remain in the same room to labor, deliver, recover and relax after the baby is born. Moms never have to compromise comfort for the highest quality of medical care. The FBC features the latest medical equipment in a comfortable, home-like setting. There is also a dedicated surgical suite just steps from the private birthing rooms, just in case there is a need for a different level of care. The Family Birthing Center is working toward adding a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit within the next 18 months, allowing the hospital to care for more critically ill newborns or babies that are several months premature. Ethics… by Dr. Robert B. Iadeluca

At the age of nine as I exited a hospital room after visiting my ill mother, she called after me: “Always be good; do what is right.” Unbeknownst to me, those were the last words I would ever hear her speak. She died the next day with those words ringing in my mind. “Do what is right” – words that mothers have said to their children for generations but this was special -- an admonition given directly to me. Taking them seriously, I printed them neatly on a sheet of paper and posted them on a wall in my room. But just what was “right?” It wasn’t that I didn’t understand the concept. Since my earliest days my mother had guided me along the proper path. Now it was my responsibility to make the right decisions. My father, a disabled veteran of World War I, was there and would remain with me until I graduated from high school, but it was my mother who had always been my guiding star. It soon became evident that the right ethical move was not that obvious. There was almost always a dilemma and my father’s guidance was considerably different from that of my mother. He had an annoying habit of saying simply: “Think it through for yourself.” My mother had also encouraged me to do my own critical thinking but in a softer manner. My father, with the military training still in his blood, allowed me to get perilously close to the wrong answer before saving me from disaster. He was the proponent of the trial and error method allowing me to learn by taking the wrong road. As I look back at my life, much if not most of my successes have evolved from making mistakes. Sometimes I would share my constant dilemmas with my friends in school causing them to be as bewildered as I. My teachers passed the problem back to my father. Another method of finding the answer was to spend some time in the library searching for the right solutions in the books on ethics. This created an additional dilemma. I learned that the Ancient Greeks had come to the conclusion that there was no absolute right or wrong. The topic of ethics, it appears, has been on the minds of men for millennia with no specific definition and no solid conclusion to the question of what is right or wrong. The answer generally turns out to be “follow your conscience.” This, however, led to the next question: “What is conscience?” Conscience, according to Rousseau, a Swiss philosopher, is “the feeling that urges us, in spite of contrary passions, toward two harmonies – one within our minds – the other within society.” Kant, a German philosopher, says, “Critical conscience is that internal court in which our thoughts accuse or excuse one another.” Not just conscience, mind you, but critical conscience, a very careful examination of all sides of a dilemma – one which Eric Erikson, developmental psychologist, called the “good” conscience, the one Ethics continued on page 54 52

Headlines are replete with such items as British tabloids hacking private voice mails and various American politicians being caught in compromising situations. Lest the rest of us compare our own integrity favorably with theirs, let us examine the following psychological research results: In 1963 Yale University psychologist Milgram conducted an experiment in which subjects were required to pit their moral imperative against authority. Each subject was instructed to give an electric “shock” to a “student” (actually a confederate) in another room if the question was wrongly answered. With each question the “voltage” of the shock was increased. The confederate would begin to cry out in apparent pain and ultimately would bang on the wall of the room, The psychologist in charge would order the 54

Dr. Peter Drucker, renowned management consultant, states, “The ethical business must act as a responsible citizen of the community. Employees have an ethical obligation to the corporation even to the extent of whistle blowing.” Dr. Erikson in his list of the eight stages of life places the development of conscience in the preschooler phase. Somewhere around the age of five or even earlier my mother had instilled in me what she described as spiritual integrity. Why should one act ethically? I cannot speak for my readers nor for anyone else. For myself the answer is simple. From a hospital bed 81 years ago my mother instructed me to follow the path she had set for me. arents are hopefully doing a lot of talking to their children and especially their teens about what NOT to do. Recent studies indicate that our children may not really be listening to us. This is alarming. From my experience working with teens, they do listen in the moment but the problem arises when they are faced with a situation that they cannot emotionally handle. For example, a teen may know not to get in the car with a driver who has been drinking. When it comes to the actual situation, a teen may not make the right choice for a variety of reasons. They may not have the self confidence to speak up. They may feel too uncomfortable or embarrassed and do not want to risk being ridiculed. Whatever the reason it is clear that just talking to our children about an important issue is not enough. The discussion needs to be repeated often and in different ways. Some children are looking for an excuse that gets them off the hook. Teens would often prefer to say, “my parents will take away my license or cell phone if I do that”. This may help them to save face with their friends. Parents are talking to their children about stranger danger, bullying, not texting or talking while driving. These are important issues. Studies show that people need to hear something repeated many times before it may actually sink in. It’s okay to annoy your children when it comes to safety. Role playing is another good option when it comes to discussing safety issues. The important message is to start having these conversations and keep them up. Change the content as your child gets older. Talk about it at the dinner table, in carpool. Just start talking. When it comes to safety issues, teens really are watching their parents. Texting, talking on cell phones while driving is a safety issue. If you don’t want your teen to do it, you shouldn’t either. A major health care reform bill â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act â&#x20AC;&#x201C; was signed into law last year. This new law is a combination of reforms to the private health insurance market and a plan to extend coverage to millions of Americans, starting in 2014. It seems clear to us that the local community will still have a tremendous need for the Free Clinic when the insurance reforms go into effect. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that as many as 23 million individuals will remain uninsured in 2019, fully five years into the implementation of the coverage expansion. These are the patients that our clinic has been serving since 1993. Our Board of Directors has established a team to watch these changes, to engage in dialogue with our community, and provide direction as the future unfolds. We will update you periodically on its work and welcome your feedback and comments. Here we go, the last blast of summer before school starts again. We want to make the most of summer fun with our families before our schedules get more hectic. Save your time spent driving for that special vacation, not running ordinary errands or going out to eat. So, check out what is going on right here where we live. We have several changes around town this month; the Northside 29 Restaurant is now open for dinner from Thursday through Sunday each week. It is not just the same menu; they have expanded their menu to include some special dinner items, like steaks. Try it; I think it will be a welcome break to let someone else do the cooking. Old Town Athletic Club on Walker Road is also expanding and they will be expanding their facility. It seems just like yesterday that they opened the new facility and now they are making it even larger. Another change is in store for Georjeans Pet Grooming, the owners Jean Gillen and Georgia Sabean have decided to retire and sell the business to Aspirations Pet Services, owned by Leslie Shriner. She brings with her a wealth of experience and is a long and trusted friend of Jean and Georgia ready to give the same great care of your pets. We have one business opening and one business closing, sort of, a couple of months ago I let you know that 1st and 10 on 29 would be opening in the building where The Wing Fanatic was. Unfortunately, it now appears that that will not happen, the “Coming Soon” signs have come down and the building is again available. Well, maybe someone else will make a go of it. The one business that is coming is a very familiar one; we will soon have Subway restaurant that will go into the space near Ihop, where Quiznos used to be but will be leaving their Main Street location. Lastly, I would like to let everyone that Fauquier County has upgraded its emergency notification system to CodeRed and CodeRed Weather Warning. You may sign up for notifications on the www.FauquierCounty.gov website. The CodeRed notifications may include evacuations, missing person alerts, hazardous materials incident, flooding, and other emergency incidents. CodeRed Weather Warning uses a methodology to notify only citizens in the path of projected weather (severe thunderstorm, tornado and flash flood) which increases relevance and reduces false alarms. The system delivers messages by phone, email and text, using a home, business or cell phone number. So, to stay informed in an emergency, visit the website and sign-up today.
