The Residents And Visitors Of Warrenton Are The Real Winners!
2013
This month, we are pleased to present the winners in the Eighth Annual Best of Warrenton Awards. A record number of ballots, over 5,300, were submitted to select this year’s favorites. Your responses are diverse and great reflections of all we have to offer in our hometown. Each year, we hear opinions about the winners and those that were runners up. We’ve always considered that as great because it means we have a plethora of choices here in Warrenton. Less than half of the organizations or people that I chose on my
ballot actually won. My wife had a ballot that looked very different than mine. It’s all a matter of choice and taste. The list may also give us an indication as to what opportunities lay before us here in Warrenton. Family stores, new shops and long-time landmarks lead the way. A dozen ‘New-Winners’ were crowned this year. And, the Best All-Around Restaurant category received votes for a record 65 different restaurants, all located in Fauquier County. In no categories were the winners anywhere near
unanimous. In the most dominated category, the winner received 48% of the vote. There were tightly contested races that came down to the final day with one contest being separated by only 3 votes and, for the second time only, a tie!. While some were great surprises, in our opinion, there were no real disappointments. So, whether you agree or disagree with the voting public, please take the time to discover some new local favorites for yourself. Let’s continue to explore our community together. We consider the Best Of list as just a “slice” of the thousands of wonderful businesses, places, and people we have to offer. Thank you to the readers of The Warrenton Lifestyle Magazine for caring enough to vote. This issue marks the beginning of our ninth year of publishing The Warrenton Lifestyle Magazine. We believe we have become an
important part of building our community by providing history, resources and ideas from various sections of our region. Our advertisers love our market penetration and affordability and their ROI has helped fuel success locally. Thank you to all the writers, photographers and readers who contribute their ‘slice of life’ each month. In addition, almost every one of our 20 person crew here at Piedmont Press & Graphics seems to be involved in our publications’ production. From ad sales to layout, design to editing, supplies to printing, binding to mailing and distribution to accounting, it takes a lot of talented people to bring you this magazine each month. Managing Editor, Krysta Norman, steered the team to another great issue. And, for the eighth time, Mike Tedeschi designed, oversaw, and guarded the voting. I am proud that my son has cared for the integrity of this product like it was his own child. It is truly a labor of love – for Warrenton.
And the winners are….

MAKE CHANGES FROM THE
(inside)out
The benefits of yoga can be felt at every age. by Nicole Stell
You’ve probably heard about how fantastic yoga is for the body. There are well-known and scientifically proven physiological and psychological benefits to a regular yoga practice. Benefits such as; increased flexibility, strength, concentration and memory. You’ve probably also heard that introducing yoga as part of your daily routine is said to reduce anxiety, stress and everyday aches and pains. In addition to these amazing benefits, there are many positive side effects that yoga can bring into your life that aren’t necessarily spoken of in the mainstream fitness world. One of these yogic side effects is that those who practice yoga are said to generally be in a better mood than those who do not. And to make it even more appealing, those individuals who have added yoga to their daily life also have been found to have a more positive attitude towards their own self- image. This is because yoga has a way of allowing you to love and respect your own body while gaining strength and agility; and therefore allowing you to have a more optimistic outlook on life. In our society, we tend to judge our bodies against harsh and impossible standards. Most people (especially women) look in the mirror and do not approve of what they see, immediately judging and critiquing every inch of their bodies. In return we diet, exercise and strive to be like the pictures of the models in magazines. Even though exercise and diet are beneficial tools for a healthier body, the behavior of relentless self-examination and criticism is extremely self-destructive to body, mind and spirit. If we are constantly trying to be like someone else, then we are not getting to know ourselves. Additionally, if we do not learn to love our own bodies then we are doomed for unhappiness and discontent. (inside)out continued on page 10 8

Recently, there have been several studies regarding the benefits of yoga. Among the more interesting of these were regarding body image; “Can yoga change and improve body image?” and “Can a regular yoga practice help us feel better about the body we have?” The study groups were mostly divided into two, those that practiced yoga for at least two hours a week and those who didn’t. In all of the results, those individuals who introduced yoga into their lives found not only increased acceptance of their bodies, but an overall sense and awareness of what their body needed to feel healthier and more alive. According to Harvard Health there was a study completed in Germany in 2005 that reported results of 24 women that added two, ninety minute yoga classes to their weekly schedule. Of the 24 women, 50% of them felt less depressed, 30% felt less anxious and 65% of the women fell an overall sense of greater well-being. The women also had other complaints that were resolved including insomnia, headaches and digestive problems. Another study done in 2005 by the Preventative Medicine Institute of California found that of the 139 subjects in their case those who added yoga to their weekly routine had a better body image than those who just practice aerobics or those who had no physical activity. Our body image is essentially how we describe ourselves, and it is no secret that we can be our own worst critic. When we practice yoga we are asked to dive deep into our physical and emotional body to see what we need and what we desire to feel better. We move in an out of positions that do not strain the body, but instead, heal the body from the inside out. As we get to know where we can excel, as we get stronger and as we understand our own limitations; our inner critic begins to quiet down. In the place of the critic, we find acceptance and contentment. This is how yoga works. It unites our mind and our body, lending experiences of harmony, serenity and joy. Through a regular yoga practice we can discover natural rhythms and happiness within ourselves. Such experiences replace what might have been a strong desire to be “the best” or the “most flexible” person in class. Enjoying our practice becomes the goal. Once we are able to access these motivations inside a yoga class, it becomes easier to translate these attitudes to our everyday lives. We have skills with which we can expand our view of life’s ever changing events and in turn, have a more positive outlook on life. In the practice of finding acceptance and satisfaction while you practice yoga, you may find happiness off the mat and in the world.

wanderlust: “a strong, innate desire to travel.” The fever works its way into your blood where it stays, like a continuous burst of adrenaline, and causes you to keep moving forward. Once you embark on your first journey, there’s no looking back. As I write this I am still in my home here in Virginia, but as you read this I am back home in Scotland, probably planning my next trip to another country. Those of you who travel will know that once the wanderlust bug bites the itch never goes away and the only real cure is a plane ticket or train journey to the next place on the bucket list. Two years ago while I was in my fifth (junior) year of high school back home, I was bitten by the wanderlust bug when a representative from foreign exchange organization Foreign Links Around the Globe (FLAG) came to give a presentation to my school. He showed us pictures of students like me smiling in front of baseball stadiums, posing at the top of the Empire State Building, or simply with friends, both from the U.S and other exchange students from all over the world. This instantly struck me as something I wanted to do, not only because it is a fantastic opportunity, but a unique one too. It would have been so easy to just move from high school straight to university like most of the other seniors in my year, but I always maintain that when life presents you an opportunity, you should grab firmly it with both hands. For the most part, people back home thought it was such an amazing and exciting opportunity. Alas, deviants like me always get the reaction from that one pessimist of, “Why?” to which I reply, “Why not?” I’ll always have the chance to go to university, but I knew that if I didn’t act quickly I would never again have the chance to come to the United States to attend high school here; to experience the American way of life from a teenage perspective, while seeing 14

some of the many spectacular sights the U.S boasts, and learning about this magnificent country first hand. How many people have that on their résumé? I’d like to say I chose to come to Virginia, but in effect, Virginia chose me. There are many different exchange organizations, but the nature of FLAG is different from the others in that the number of student participants is limited so that a close link can be maintained between the students and those responsible for us. The main office carefully selects both students and host families and tries to match them up as best as possible from the information you put in the application form. The residence of the family that chooses you determines where you will live for the year. I was extremely fortunate to be chosen by the Schupps here in Warrenton, who have been kinder and more supportive than I could ever have hoped for, and have gone above and beyond what is expected of them as a host family. I was not alone in the house this year, as I had a double placement, meaning another exchange student was living here with me; a girl named Liliana, from Moldova. Both of us feel that we were not simply guests this year; we have become a part of the family, 16
and for that we are incredibly thankful. We have seen so many amazing sights, from Times Square in New York City, to the breathtaking canyons and sandstone arches in the national parks of Utah, and it is memories like these that will remain with us forever. Exchange and travel can even be used as a vehicle for friendly relations between countries. Now I have friends and family from all over the world, and so does every other exchange student who ever jumped on a plane. Aldous Huxley said that “to travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries” and this is the message we exchange students will take back with us. An experience like this leaves a mark, and is hard to leave everything behind when it is unknown as to when you will return. Even when you do, it will not be exactly the same as you remember. Going home will be very strange, because it’s almost as though I’ve put my Scottish life on pause for a year to start an American one, and now that it’s drawing to a close I need to get ready to jump back into the way things were before. This really has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I would do it all again in a heartbeat if I could.
I have taken so much experience from my year here through adjusting to new situations and communicating with different people, and as a result, learning things about myself. I have learned never to believe in stereotypes, and to experience for oneself what a country and its people are like. I have also learned that being in the car on the opposite side of the road isn’t really as scary as it sounds. But on a more serious note I have met so many amazing, talented, and inspirational people this year, and each of them has taught me something in their own way. Being away from home for ten months really throws into focus the friendships that will survive the test of time, and also those made of empty promises. It builds tolerance and independence, and opens one’s eyes to the opportunities the world has to offer once you venture past your front doorstep. In addition, it has taught me things about my own country that I had never noticed before, “like a fish out of water” as the old saying goes, and I’ve only just realized what the water is. Too many people are so quick to complain about where they come from, which saddens me. Henry Rollins once said that “the best way to learn about your country is to leave it”, and in my limited experience it is those who have not left that do not appreciate it. We’ve all talked about how “the grass is always greener on the other side”, which is true to an extent, as we always want to believe the romantic image in our heads of those places that we dream of visiting, and sometimes we are disappointed by reality. Sure our world is not perfect, but that doesn’t mean that we should forget about its beauty for the sake of a few blemishes. Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. These were the words of the pastor at my church several weeks ago, and I could not agree more with her. We do not know what we can achieve until we leave the world we know behind. We do not know what we will see until we book a ticket and go. As St. Augustine said, “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” Warrenton Lifestyle

Warrenton’s Dental Care Legacy by John T. Toler
The names Hodgkin and Allison have long been synonymous with their profession Traditions are important to Virginians, and being able to rely on a tradition of service, especially in the field of healthcare, means a lot. Last year, Dr. William “Will” H. Allison, 81, marked 50 years practicing general dentistry in Warrenton. A native Warrentonian, he is a 1953 graduate of Virginia Military Institute and 1957 graduate of the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry. After completing U.S. Army service in May 1962, Dr. Allison could have gone into civilian practice just about anywhere, but he chose to return to Warrenton. Once back home, he joined his uncle, Dr. James O. Hodgkin Jr. (1889-1970) and his cousin, Dr. James O. Hodgkin III (19222010) in the dental practice started in 1875 by his grandfather, Dr. James Orlando Hodgkin Sr. (1853-1929). Another uncle, Dr. William N. Hodgkin (1890-1961), had been part of the practice for 49 years, but passed away the year before. Dr. Allison’s homecoming was made even more special, as the doctors had just moved from the second floor of the Grayson’s Department Store on Main Street that they had occupied since 1894 to the brand new Warrenton Professional Building at 220 Culpeper Street, on the corner with East Shirley Highway. That three generations of professionals had chosen to remain in their hometown is rare in this day and age; that they would all be dentists and practice in the same office throughout the years is even more unusual. Clearly, they established a tradition, if not a legacy. But the story of Dr. Will Allison’s medical lineage goes back even farther, and includes the Day, Hodgkin and Allison families. The Doctors Day of ‘Daysville’ Dr. William Day (1817-1886) and his 18
brother, Dr. John Thomas Day (1828-1893), lived next door to each other in Dranesville, on the Leesburg Turnpike in Eastern Loudoun County. Typical 19th century country doctors, Dr. William took care of patients from Dranesville to the south, including Herndon, while Dr. John usually handled those toward the north and west, including Leesburg. Dr. William Day was Dr. Allison’s greatgrandfather; Dr. Day’s daughter, Roberta Day Hodgkin (1857-1952), was Dr. Allison’s maternal grandmother. As a child growing up in Warrenton, Will Allison remembers hearing stories about the War “at the knee” of Roberta Hodgkin, including accounts of Capt. John S. Mosby’s visits to “Mayfield,” the family home at Dranesville, where he would often have dinner with the family. Once, when she was about eight years old, Mosby invited her to get on the back of his horse, and they galloped down Dranesville’s main street. “She remembers hanging on to Mosby with both hands, while the plume on Mosby’s hat tickled her in the face,” recalled Dr. Allison. Following the First Battle of Manassas in July 1861, casualties from both sides were brought to Dranesville, where Roberta’s father and uncle treated the wounded and dying in a makeshift tent, out in the heat. Neighborhood women and girls, including Roberta and her sisters, helped by bringing water to the suffering soldiers as they were brought in. By the third day of battle, casualties filled two fields by their home. The Day brothers treated the wounded from both sides equally, but Union sympathizers in the community alleged that they had mistreated Yankee casualties. “Grandmother recalled sitting in the front of the house reading when she heard someone coming down the front path,” according to Dr. Allison. “It was Yankee

cavalry. A sergeant came up on the porch, and shattered the glass in the front door with his saber, and rode his horse inside the house. He demanded to know her father’s whereabouts. She was terrified.” Dr. William Day was dragged down the stairs in his nightshirt. His brother John, who lived next door at “Ivy Chimney,” and four other Dranesville citizens were taken to the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, D.C. where they would spend nearly a year. The doctors’ families were permitted to visit them occasionally, but the children, including Roberta, had to remain outside. Another family story concerned a Union officer who encountered Roberta outside the prison, weeping for her father inside. Moved by her tears, he gave her a gold coin, which remained in the family for many years. Finally released in a prisoner-of-war exchange, the doctors quickly moved their dental care legacy continued on page 20 Warrenton Lifestyle

families out of Northern Virginia to relative safety in South Carolina. Both then signed on with the Confederate Army as contract physicians, and saw action at Antietam and Second Manassas. After the War, the families returned to their old homes at Dranesville. In 1869, a post office was established in a store in the previously unnamed little community just to the west of Dranesville, which as called “Daysville” in their honor. Sadly, Daysville is long gone, now covered by the Loudoun Campus of Northern Virginia Community College. But somehow Mayfield survived, and still stands today. The Day/Hodgkin Legacy Miss Roberta Day married Warrenton native Dr. James Orlando Hodgkin in 1878, uniting the two families. The son of William F. (1820-1898) and Louisa Caroline Hodgkin (1829-1905), J. O. Hodgkin was introduced to dentistry by his uncle, Dr. J. Ben Hodgkin DDS (1838-1913), a native of Prince William County, who during the Civil War worked as a gunsmith in the Confederate Armory in Richmond. After the war, he attended the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, earning his degree in 1869. He then started a dental practice in Alexandria. In 1874, Dr. J. B. Hodgkin was appointed a professor at the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, and from 1887-1890, taught dental surgery at the National University in Washington, D.C. Over the years, he had

many papers published in dental journals. After completing an “apprenticeship” offered by Dr. J.B. Hodgkin, J. O. Hodgkin was accepted at the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, where he earned his degree. He briefly practiced in Alexandria and Washington, D.C., before returning to Warrenton in 1875 with his new wife Roberta. Dr. Hodgkin opened a dental practice in the upstairs of the old Stephens Building at 15 Main Street (later Kirby’s Downtown Store, and now part of the BB&T building complex). In 1893, Joseph A. Jeffries purchased the old Lyons building at 11 Main Street, which he demolished and replaced with a large, new commercial structure. The building had two stores on the first floor, and offices upstairs. One of the first tenants for the upstairs
office space was Dr. J.O. Hodgkin, who moved his practice there from the Stephens Building in late 1894. For years the building was the home of Grayson’s Department Store, then Lerner’s. Currently, SONA Bank and the Secret Garden salon occupy the street-level stores. Later, Dr. Hodgkin’s younger brother, Franklin Chilton Hodgkin, DDS (18691932) completed his dental training, and had his own dental practice on the same floor of the building until his death at age 63. The Hodgkin family of doctors occupied this office space above Main Street for nearly 70 years, providing dental care for generations. “So many people remember walking up those stairs as children, and thinking, ‘Oh, my gosh! I don’t want to go up there!,’” said Dr. Allison with a chuckle. Like most medical practices serving patients out in the countryside in those days, Dr. Hodgkin saw many of his patients while making house calls. Dr. Allison recalls hearing about his grandfather boarding the train in Warrenton, and stopping along the way at Casanova, Calverton, Midland and points south. At each stop he would be met by a family member or friend of the patient with a horse-and-buggy, who would take him to the “appointment” at his patient’s home. Once he had finished the necessary treatment, he was brought back to the station to meet the next train. While transportation may have been “basic,” the care he offered patients was not. Dr. Hodgkin was one of the few dentists who filled cavities in teeth with gold foil, a

difficult and time-consuming process. But it offered the best results, usually lasting the rest of the patient’s lifetime. Dr. Allison recalls talking with Nan Blackwell (1882-1984), who had been a patient of Dr. J.O. Hodgkin Sr. many years ago.
Street, expanding into several more rooms in Mr. Jeffries’ building. For a while, there were four Hodgkins practicing dentistry there: J. O. Sr., “Biggy,” Bill and Frank. Dr. J.O. Hodgkin Jr. left the practice briefly in 191718 to serve in the Army during World War I.
In 1931, Dr. Bill Hodgkin was elected the first president of the Northern Virginia Dental Association, which encompassed dentists with practices as far south as Orange, and west to Winchester. “There were only 38 members in the association back then, out of that whole area,” remarked Dr. Allison. Other offices he held were president of the American College of Dentists, and president of the American Association of Dental Examiners. He was also a member of the MCV Board of Visitors.
“Back then, when young ladies graduated from finishing school, they were always sent to Europe for a trip,” he explained. “Nan was in Paris and chipped a tooth, and the U.S. Embassy arranged for her to see a French dentist. She had ten gold foil fillings, which was unheard of in Europe, since it was too time consuming.” The dentist looked into Nan’s mouth, and impressed by what he saw, asked her if she could wait while he called all of the other dentists he could reach to come and look at her gold foil fillings. Years later, when Miss Blackwell was in a nursing home, Dr. Allison stopped by to help her with a dental problem, and noticed that the gold foil fillings were still intact. “It was the ultimate restorative process,” he added. Second and Third Generations The J.O. Hodgkin family was to produce two future dentists, James Orlando Jr., born in 1889, and William Newton, born in 1890. The boys grew up in Warrenton, and were friends with Mary Louise Evans (1887-1966), who wrote about the Hodgkin family in an article published in The Fauquier Democrat in August 1950: “I recall playing with Drs. Bill and ‘Biggy’ (as J. O. Jr. was known) as children, riding in their pony cart, which was always filled to overflowing. I remember their telling, with rather an embarrassed expression, how they attended the Fauquier Female Institute (a girls’ school in Warrenton that also admitted boys),” wrote Miss Evans. Dr. Allison noted that other Warrenton boys attended the school, including Ian Montgomery and North Fletcher. The Hodgkin boys attended RandolphMacon Academy in Front Royal before earning their undergraduate degrees at Washington & Lee University in Lexington. From there, they went to the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, where they were awarded their dental degrees in 1912. Returning to Warrenton, they “put out their shingles” at their father’s office above Main 22
“I got uptown in sight of the building in time to see ‘Dr. Biggy’ lower himself from the office window, well above the street,” recalled Miss Evans in 1950. “It was as though he was taking his morning exercise.” But after the fire, Dr. J.O. Hodgkin Sr. decided that 50 years in dentistry was enough, and retired.
Dr. J.O. “Biggy” Hodgkin Jr. was married to the former Cornelia Wilson (18991972) of Danville, Va., who had come to Warrenton as a teacher. Their son, James O. Hodgkin III, followed his father and grandfather into dentistry. The family of Dr. J.O. Hodgkin Sr. in Warrenton in the 1890s included (top row) Louise, Gertrude and Dr. Hodgkin; middle row, Bill, Mrs. Hodgkin holding son Robert, Marian (later Mrs. Luther L. Allison Sr.), Ruth and J.O. Jr. (Biggy). Seated, Edith Hodgkin. Courtesy of Sally Hodgkin.
Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, the Hodgkins were very involved in their community. Dr. J.O. Hodgkin Sr. served on the Warrenton Town Council, and both “Biggy” and Bill sang with the Warrenton Choral Quartet. There was a serious fire in the dental office in May 1925, caused when a gasoline torch exploded. By then, the property was owned by John B. Grayson, who had his general merchandise store and the Roadhouse & Bunch Dime Store on the street level. According to the report in the June 2, 1925 edition of The Washington Post, “The flames quickly spread quickly over the entire second floor of the building, which was practically destroyed. The business district was threatened with destruction because of the explosion of a fire plug to which the main line of hose was attached.” The fire, which had started at about 3 p.m., burned for two hours, until firefighters from Warrenton, Manassas and Leesburg could extinguish it. Nearly all of the dentists’ personal property – including Dr. J.O. Hodgkin Sr.’s diploma – was lost.
“Dr. Jim,” as he was later known, graduated from Warrenton High School and Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1943. He had just started his studies at the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry when he was called to serve in the U.S. Army. Following his discharge, he returned to MCV, “…and after graduation in 1949, returned home, as his father had done, making him the fifth Dr. Hodgkin to practice as a dental surgeon, in the same building, three in the same office,” noted Miss Evans. “Biggy’s and Dr. Jim’s military discharges were hung sideby-side on the office wall.” Dr. J. O Hodgkin III was again called up for military duty during the Korean War, serving as an officer in the U.S. Air Force Dental Corps at Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Ala. Again he returned to the family practice after fulfilling his obligation. He continued to practice in Warrenton until retiring in 1993. Dr. Will Allison Comes Aboard The Allison family has deep roots in Virginia and Fauquier County. Dr. Will Allison’s paternal grandfather, James Edward Allison (1865-1944) had the family farm on Meetze Road, and managed Alwington Farm next door, then owned by Harrison Nesbitt. Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Allison had a large family – eight boys and two girls. “It was ideal for dental care legacy continued on page 24 Warrenton Lifestyle

The connection with the Hodgkin family was made when Dr. Allison’s father, Luther L. Allison Sr. (1891-1962) married Marian Hodgkin (1893-1982), a daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J.O. Hodgkin Sr. Interestingly, Marian came from a large family, too – eight girls and two boys. Mr. and Mrs. Luther L. Allison had two sons, Luther Lee Jr. (1925-1954) and William “Will” Hodgkin Allison (b. 1931), who was named for his uncle, Dr. William Hodgkin. Starting in 1913, Luther Allison Sr. was a partner with Arthur R. Anderson Sr. (18871959) in a grocery store on Main Street originally called Anderson & Allison Fancy Market. After Mr. Allison bought out Mr. Anderson’s interest in the business in 1952, the store was renamed A&A Market. Mr. Allison’s brother, Alex Allison, managed the business until it closed, and the building sold to H. B. Carter in 1968, and later to Howard Sweeney. It is now the site of the Black Bear Bistro. It is noteworthy that the proprietors of Anderson & Allison both had sons who chose lifelong careers in dentistry – and practiced in Warrenton. Like Dr. Will Allison, the late Dr. A. Robert “Bob” Anderson Jr. was a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia. After

graduation, he interned at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, but was called up to serve in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps during World War II. Dr. Anderson returned to Warrenton after the war, and was first associated with Dr. William N. Hodgkin before starting his own practice. Will Allison graduated from VMI with a premed degree in 1953, about a month before the ceasefire that unofficially ended the Korean War. He was slated to start training for the armored cavalry (tanks), but with hostilities ending in Korea, he was released from active duty. Accepted at the MCV School of Dentistry, Dr. Allison earned his DDS degree in 1957. However, he still had to fulfill his VMI military obligation, and was ordered to serve in the U.S. Army Dental Corps. Commissioned as a captain, Dr. Allison was assigned to the 130th Station Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany. “We had 14 general officers and 130 ‘bird colonels’ at Heidelberg, and were the main dental hospital for all the troops in Europe,” he noted. After serving with the U.S. Army in Europe, Dr. Allison returned to the U.S., where he was assigned to Fort Belvoir. He was originally scheduled to be released in October 1961, but due to the Berlin Crisis, he was held over until May 1962. In June, he was back in Warrenton as a civilian, and joined the family practice in their new building. He has been there ever since.
Over the past 50 years, there were inevitable changes. Dr. Bill had died in 1961, and Dr. J.O. Biggy” Hodgkin Jr. died in 1970, leaving the practice to Dr. Jim Hodgkin III and Dr. Allison. Following Dr. Jim Hodgkin’s retirement in 1993, Dr. Robert Flikeid joined Dr. Allison, and two young dentists were brought on to assist them on a temporary basis. Dr. Flikeid became the manager of the practice in 1997, which is operated as Robert C. Flikeid, DDS & Associates. In addition to Dr. Allison, the other dentists at the practice are Dr. Michael Koerner and Dr. Natalja A. Vlasek. Another associate, Dr. Bryan Zopp, who graduated from the MCV Dental School this year, recently joined the practice. With some time now available to do other things, Dr. Allison has been able to give back to the profession he loves in a leadership role. Among other activities, he is a member of the Northern Virginia Dental Association and the Virginia Dental Association, both of which he has served as president. The walls of his office are lined with many certificates and plaques earned over a long and active career. Current interests include foxhunting (a former MFH of the Warrenton Hunt), and more recently, serving as the President of the Virginia Gold Cup Association, as well as the group’s Race Chairman. In this role, he has brought new energy – as well as continuing a tradition.

Hit the Ground Running FAUQUIER WOMEN WORK TO BRING GIRLS ON THE RUN TO THE PIEDMONT AREA Our little community has fostered and grown a lot of very successful and beneficial programs for our youth. We have programs like the Boys Scouts of America, the Girls Scouts, Young Life, travel sports teams, after school programs, the Boys and Girls Club, Future Farmers of America and more that were brought here to provide a positive environment for children and teens to develop. Recently, a group of local women have hit the ground running in hopes to bring an organization dedicated to the growth of elementary aged girls in our area that would build confidence and self-awareness through running. Girls on the Run(GOTR) was started in 1996 with a total of thirteen bold girls that participated in the Charlotte, NC program. The following year the program doubled, and by 2000 the program turned into a 501c3 organization and currently serves 130,000 girls with the help of 55,000 volunteers in over 200 cities in North America. GOTR has received an abundance of national media attention for their 24-lesson curriculum, which has helped attract large sponsors like Athleta, Secret deodorant, Goody hair products and Garmin. GOTR works to “inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.” The program divides the group in to small teams of 8-20 girls, and they meet two times a week to learn life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games. The lessons are taught by certified GOTR coaches and focuses on three main parts: understanding themselves as individuals, valuing relationships and teamwork and understanding how they can connect and shape the world. The 12 week long program is run efficiently and creates a pattern for a comfortable learning experience. Each lesson is taught similarly beginning with a “Getting on Board” activity to center the girls’ focus. A “Warm-Up” follows which helps warm up the girls’ muscles while introducing the topic of the day. “Processing” is next with a question and answer session to provide further understanding of the topic. A “Workout” is incorporated that allows girls to complete goal-oriented running games that builds-up their endurance throughout the program in order for the hitting the ground running continued on page 46 44

girls to successfully complete 3.1 miles. “Processing” is again included to discuss questions related to the workout and topic while cooling down. Finally, each session will end with a “Wrap Up” to congratulate progress and provide positivity to the girls. Each program is divided into 3 sections with 8 lessons for organization. The first section is dedicated to “provide participants with opportunities to examine their own core values and ascertain what makes them unique, learn about their individual strengths while setting personal goals and explore the importance of being physically and emotionally healthy.” The second section works to “provide opportunities to explore getting along within a group, learn active listening and assertiveness skills, recognize the importance of managing conflict with others and examine the components of good decision-making skills. The final section “provides participants opportunities to explore their responsibility to the community, analyze cultural messages girls receive from the media and other institutions, define community, and their collective and individual roles in it, and to recognize the power they have to change the world in a positive way by implementing a community impact project.” As the program begins to approach the finish line, the girls are challenged to run a non-competitive 5k race to celebrate their accomplishments with family, friends, teachers and the community as a whole. A group of local ladies including moms and fitness-enthusiasts have realized the value of GOTR for the girls in our community and have been actively organizing and fundraising since the spring of 2013 to bring a Piedmont chapter that would serve Fauquier, Culpeper and Rappahannock counties. Headed by President Sissy Gregg with the help of women like Katherine Doeller, Beth Howser and many more, they were able to launch fundraisers online at Indiegogo, at Iron Bridge Wine Company and at First Fr!day in Old town to successfully raise awareness and the initial funds to begin the process of becoming sanctioned. The group raised over $2,500 to pay for coaches training in North Carolina but still need funds totally $7,500 to get the program officially started here. Ideally, GOTR would begin their first program in the Fall of 2014 with dedicated leadership, educated coaches, compassionate volunteers and multiple host sites for utilization like schools, parks, activity centers, or churches. While monetary donations are a necessity to get the program started they are also seeking creative donations like flyers, snacks, water, sports beverages, t-shirts and sponsorships alike. Women who are interested in volunteering could help in an assortment of ways from coaching to being a running buddy to helping organize 5ks. There is still plenty to accomplish before the program is officially off and running, so any one interested in helping should reach out on their Facebook page at Bring Girls on the Run to Piedmont. It will have the most recent news on goals, needs and fundraising events. Help this positive program come 46

GIVING A DAM
boy scout builds to save local salamander population. by Cassandra Lubowsky
There is a usual process by which a boy becomes a man. If the boy is unusually resolute, hard-working and civic-minded, he might become an Eagle Scout along the way. “Eagle Scout” is a rare badge of honor sought by unique young men, all under the age of 18, who earn the required 21 merit badges, complete a final project, and grasp the ropes of leadership to attain the highest rank available in the Boy scouting program. Since 1912, the Eagle Scout has represented responsibility, courageousness and above all, honor. The final project demonstrates skills of organization, coordination and leadership, it also involves a significant task comprising fundraising and self-management skills. As a scout works his way through the related project tasks, he develops self-confidence while supplying the community with a useful contribution. The program takes a boy and seasons him by providing an opportunity to learn from making mistakes in a secure niche of brotherhood. 48
Fauquier’s Luke Dodds has been a scout for eleven years, part of Troop 177 in Marshall. He is nearing the end of his scouting years and approaching the Eagle project. Designed to test the scout’s ability to lead, the projects not only give back to the community through volunteer effort, but also ensure that the scout is a man of good intentions and strong composure. Eagle Scout projects tend to be construction-related, and range from shelves for the local library to retaining walls to control erosion. Each project poses complexity and requires many hours of research, fundraising, paperwork and a passionate commitment to completing the task. Luke’s project also has a construction element, but is a rarity; he has chosen to build a dam system to save the habitat of the Jefferson Salamander. The Jefferson is a “Keystone” species to the Piedmont region. The population of this salamander is a crucial factor in assessing climate change. The lack of giving a dam continued on page 50 Warrenton Lifestyle

salamanders in a forested area increases decomposition rates of litter on the forest floor and increases the release of carbon from the soil. Luke’s goal for his project, to be completed this summer, is to revitalize the salamander’s once thriving habitat in part of Fauquier. Environmental Studies on the Piedmont (ESP), a private research, education, and conservation organization affiliated with George Mason University is located just north of Warrenton. ESP Director Thomas C. Wood, reached out to Luke offering ESP’s acreage full of indigenous plants and wildlife. Wood suggested a project that would support ESP’s mission while reviving the “keystone” amphibian. “This project will improve [the] breeding habitat for salamanders here, which is good for biodiversity while enhancing educational opportunities for the many students who visit the field station, and for the public that comes for special events,” said Wood. Every project begins with preliminary planning. The most time consuming part of an Eagle project is the prep work that readies the scout for the day of the project and arms him with the specific skills needed to guide volunteers. After Luke chose his project he had to prepare an Eagle Scout Service Project Proposal, the basic plan of what his project will accomplish. After finishing the Proposal, he needed his Scout Master’s approval. Then came the Eagle Scout Service Project Final Plan, which covers fundraising, materials and supplies, and steps needed to complete the project. Once the plan is approved, and funds are raised, the project can commence. On the day of the project all of the volunteers Luke can enlist will arrive and be divided into two teams. The first will place risers and build the dam. The dam will be constructed so that only two holes, where the risers will protrude, will permit water to pass through the dam or into the vernal pools. Then concrete forms will be

placed into the water and concrete poured as a foundation for the risers to rest in. Once the concrete sets, the dam will be finished by surrounding the risers with clay from the creek bed; this will complete the work for the first team. The second will have the task of making a path for the water to go from the dam to the salamander pools. This will be done by using a tractor to cut a swale (a gently sloping ditch) in the ground from the dam to the pools. Once cut, erosion control netting will be placed on top and grass planted. This should permit rehydration resulting in revitalization of the salamander’s once thriving habitat, as the pools currently dry up every spring and prohibit the necessary amount of larvae to hatch and prosper. Not all Eagle candidates decide to undertake such a labor intensive project. Director Wood observed, “Luke has demonstrated a commitment above and beyond the basic requirements. He is willing to do what it takes to get this ambitious project finished.” Luke decided to rise to the challenge of a difficult project; ESP will receive the benefits of his hard work which embodies the spirit of the Eagle and all that it stands for. On his quest to become an Eagle, Luke has held numerous leadership positions in and out of the Boy Scout community. He has also been the captain of Fauquier High School’s soccer team. But scouting has made the strongest impression.
Jeff Long, a veteran Scout leader, has been a great influence on Luke and has inspired his hard work. Long has been inspired back, and says: “As with most things that Luke touches, he excels with humility. The Life Scout rank badge sewn on his uniform shirt and a sash full of completed merit badge patches attest to his dedication and participation level in the Scouting program. In his role as a leader, Luke’s easy-going style and charisma, coupled with his practical knowledge, has thus far served him by making people want to follow him.” A Scout’s relationship with his troop, a brotherhood, is a lasting benefit. Every troop is different, and Long describes troop 177 as “more independent and comfortable outdoors than Troops in urban settings. Our rural environment allows the Scouts to take the initiative, be inventive and solve problems under the watch of adult leaders, learning and growing together.” “Some consider the Boy Scout Eagle Rank as a culmination, when in fact it is a beginning,” says Long. Luke will always have his troop and the Eagle in his life history. He will be a better citizen every step of the way forward as a result of this. He will continue to serve his community, and nation, and to represent the finest qualities of the Boy Scouts of America. “Once an Eagle, always an Eagle” and Luke Dodds will soar from his solid perch as Eagle Scout.

BUILDING
Self-Esteem for Health & Happiness
by Michelle Kelley, LCSW
When I was a young girl, there were several running jokes in my extended family – all of which made me seem and certainly feel as though I was somehow not good enough. Looking back, I don’t know why it was so amusing but I went along with the jokes because I was a “good girl” – and going along with jokes, even if they are hurtful is what “good girls” did – and still do, today. How many of us have laughed at dumb blond jokes when really, what’s funny about putting someone down because of the color of their hair? Although I’m sure the intent of these jokes was not to hurt me, I took to heart their implied messages:
● Michelle isn’t very smart ● Michelle won’t amount to much. ● Don’t bother to envision or pursue a better, brighter future for yourself.
Years later, when I had to leave college and move back home due to my failing grades I was demoralized, wondering if those implied messages were true after all. Fortunately, I found a good counselor who helped me recognize and question my silent assumptions, my negative self-talk and my misguided beliefs. Under my counselor’s guidance, I learned how to tame and master the twin demons of self-doubt and selfhatred. With the support and encouragement of my close family and friends, I developed the strength, the will, and the skills I needed to eventually create a life I love. Today, my passion and my mission is to coach, counsel and guide women and girls who struggle, as I did years ago, with feelings of self-doubt and low self-esteem. I show them how to get unstuck, to figure out what they really want, to change the beliefs and behaviors that are holding them back, and change or get out of toxic relationships. Signs of Low Self-Esteem in Women and Girls
“I hate my body” “I hate my hair” “I’m not smart enough or good enough.” “I don’t really deserve him” “I’m too fat” “I’m too thin” “I wish I were someone else” 52
These are the silent, persistent thoughts that plague women and girls with low self-esteem. It’s interesting to note that boys and men rarely, if ever, talk about themselves this way. They may suffer from low self-esteem, but low self-esteem in boys and men manifests in very different ways – one of which is through arrogance. I can recall working with a young girl who was unhappy with her looks because she would rather have blond hair and blue eyes. It breaks my heart to see girls of any age, especially elementary school girls, feeling anxious and depressed because they don’t look, feel or act the way our media and culture say they should. We, as parents, need to have regular conversations with our daughters about the messages they see in our media about girls and women. We need to teach our daughters how to resist and immunize themselves against these damaging and demoralizing messages that create unrealistic and dangerous expectations for how they should look, behave and feel. Why Low Self-Esteem is Dangerous Low self-esteem in women and girls is a sneaky, insidious and dangerous thing. It can lead to: Bad Relationships Women who suffer from low self-esteem tend to choose friends, boyfriends and husbands who treat them badly and reinforce their poor self-image. They get stuck in bad relationships and bad marriages, afraid to speak up for themselves or leave and search for someone better suited for them. They are susceptible to physical and emotional abuse. They often think, “What if this guy is as good as it gets? If I let go of him, I may never find a better man. The next man I find may be worse. This guy may be the best that I deserve.” building self-esteem continued on page 54 Warrenton Lifestyle

Unsatisfying, Dead-End Careers Women who suffer from low self-esteem are often afraid to ask for a raise, to pursue a promotion, or take the risks needed to advance themselves professionally. They may have subtle, unrecognized feelings that “I can’t do this. Someone else is better qualified. What if I get rejected?” They find it hard to imagine something better for themselves. Depression and Anxiety Women and girls who struggle with low self esteem have trouble recognizing and identifying their real wants and needs. They don’t pursue friendships and activities that would give them joy because they don’t trust or believe that they “have what it takes” to get what they want. They often say “yes” when they want to say “no.” They settle for less than they want or need. Over time, this pattern of giving in and giving up can lead to issues with anxiety and depression. Positive Self Esteem is Good for Your Health It has been said that positive self-esteem is the immune system of consciousness. When you build up your self-esteem, you build up your immune system and become more resilient in the face of life’s inevitable disappointments and setbacks. Steps to Building Up Self Esteem Girls and women can start laying the foundation for success in life by developing their emotional intelligence and practicing a specific set of skills that will build their self-esteem. For example: • Train yourself to hear, recognize and question the inner voices of self-doubt and self-hatred that hold you back and undermine your happiness. • Step outside your comfort zone and do one thing that scares you. Raise your hand and speak up in class. Start a conversation with someone you admire but are afraid to talk to. Try a new sport. Join a new group. Enroll in a class that appeals to you. • Recognize that everyone experiences rejection throughout their lives and being rejected does not mean there is something inherently wrong with you. Rejection is a natural and inevitable part of life. Allow yourself to embrace rejection and move on. • Stop saying “yes” when you would rather say “no”. Notice when you find yourself striving to please people by saying what you think they want to hear, instead of what you truly believe. Develop scripts you can use in uncomfortable situations to protect yourself and preserve your integrity. Practice saying what you really mean (diplomatically, of course).
The Heroine’s Journey To every girl and woman who is feeling fearful, rejected, dejected, disrespected, stuck and unable to get where they want to go in life, I can say from my own experience: There is a heroine inside you who is ready, eager and able to guide you if you will pay attention and follow her. You don’t have to stay stuck in a job or in relationships where you pretend to be someone other than who you really are inside. It is possible to have a rewarding life with fulfilling work, surrounded by people who love you for who you really are, who value and support your true, authentic self. Overcoming Low Self-Esteem Will Help You Create a Future You Love My grandparents’ generation stayed in the same job for life, even if they were unhappy. That way of living is long gone. Today, we are called on to imagine the future we want for ourselves, and then identify the stepping stones to creating the future we want. We must seek out and cultivate the relationships that will bring us joy, knowing that we deserve joy in our lives and that joy is, indeed, possible. It takes a good amount of positive self-esteem to take those steps and make that leap of faith. Most people are not aware of the unconscious labels and messages that they carry around in their heads. They don’t realize that they are unconsciously stuck in roles that were assigned to them by family and friends when they were young. They mistake their own voice for the negative messages and putdowns they absorbed in their childhood.
Today, I am grateful to everyone who helped me overcome my self-esteem and self-confidence issues. I am grateful to have a life I love, a family I love, and a career I love. You can too! Fauquier Health Meet Dr. Brian DeCastro, New Fauquier Health Urologist Fauquier Health is delighted to welcome Dr. Brian DeCastro, urologist to its medical staff. He is just as happy to be at Fauquier Health. He said, “When I left the Army, my wife and I were free to move anywhere in the country. We both fell in love with Warrenton and Fauquier Hospital. Warrenton seems like an ideal place to raise a family. Everyone here is so friendly and welcoming, and the hospital’s patient-centered care model suits me perfectly.” We chatted with Dr. DeCastro recently about his approach to urology. Q: Why did you choose urology as your specialty? I always thought I would choose family practice as a specialty, but when I worked during my third year with a local urologist, I found that I really enjoyed all of the surgeries and office procedures. Urology is very satisfying because you have the ability to definitively help people. It’s very rewarding to improve patients’ overall quality of life by treating urologic cancers, relieving kidney stone pain and correcting incontinence. Q: What are the most common ailments that you see in your patients? Kidney stones, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, enlarged prostate/BPH, erectile dysfunction, low testosterone, urinary incontinence (leakage), kidney and ureteral cancer, male infertility, urinary tract infections, testicular cancer, testicular pain, vasectomies and neurogenic bladder. Q: Are there any new techniques or treatments that are especially exciting? Urology is constantly growing and changing. Currently in urology we are making significant advances in the management of prostate cancer. We have the ability to laser stones through tiny scopes and improve incontinence. In the past 10 years there 56

No ‘Schmahl’ Impact
Warrenton Pastor makes an impression with service in our community.
When Pastor Carl Schmahl winds up his sermon and dismisses the congregation of Warrenton Presbyterian Church on Sunday, August 25, he will descend from the pulpit for the last time. After 25 years as pastor of the Main Street church, Schmahl is retiring. Those years have been fruitful and exciting, as the church family grew, the facility enlarged, and the community outreach expanded to include a thriving preschool.
When he retires this month, Pastor Schmahl will have spent 30 years in ministry, 25 of them at Warrenton Presbyterian Church. During his tenure the church expanded to include, among other improvements, a brightly spacious new sanctuary.
58
After Schmahl graduated from seminary, he pastored King Ferry Presbyterian Church in New York for five years. Then came the call from Warrenton Presbyterian Church. Along with wife Meredith and children Matt and Erin, Schmahl joined a church family that had just said farewell to its pastor of 36 years, the Rev. J. Richard Winter. Taking over from a longtime minister is a delicate task. Bill Gouldthorpe, who has attended WPC since childhood, recalled, “He had a tough time coming in replacing Dick Winter, it was difficult to take his place. And Carl did that very graciously.” Now, 25 years later, Schmahl is the first pastor some members ever knew. They grew up listening to a tall man who left the lofty heights of the pulpit every Sunday morning to gather all the

children up front for a simple lesson just for them. Jamie Allen, now 15, always went up for “children’s time.” She said, “After he gives a short lesson on something amazing Jesus did, he always says, ‘I think that’s pretty neat.’ ” Allen especially loved those Sundays when Schmahl brought along his sidekick, an irresistible puppet named Mo. “I always liked Mo and I got lots of hugs from him,” she said. Schmahl’s personal credos that most members mention is, “Make a difference in your small corner of the world.” Schmahl has untiringly demonstrated this in his own life. In addition to his pastoral and administrative duties, he helped the larger Fauquier community by volunteering with the hospital. For years, he also ran calls with the New Baltimore Emergency Medical Services. Rodger Baker, president and CEO of Fauquier Health, recalled, “Pastor Carl Schmahl was a volunteer chaplain and he coordinated a cadre of volunteer chaplains sometime around 2005.” One of those chaplains was the Rev. David Smith. “He probably served the hospital chaplaincy as a volunteer

Pastor Emeritus J. Richard Winter, right, served Warrenton Presbyterian Church for 35 years before Carl Schmahl, left, was called to be the new pastor. Pastor Schmahl retires this month after 25 years in the WPC pulpit.

for 10-15 years,” Smith said. “Because he recognized the need for consistent leadership for the chaplaincy services.” Schmahl’s commitment to the hospital was not restricted to chaplain duty. Smith explained, “He had a particular interest in working in the Emergency Department. He told me he did ride-alongs with some fire and rescue folks, and found it beneficial to understand their perspective as well. He made himself available to them as well as hospital staff, providing Critical Incident Stress Management interventions.” At the core of Schmahl’s ministry is his intellectual rigor and powerful drive to teach. A voracious reader, he never stops learning, and is eager to share the ideas and authors he discovers. He teaches a lively adult class on Sunday mornings. Don and Lois Hollar attend Schmahl’s class. They describe him as “a learned, intellectual teacher.” Lois Hollar said, “I was impressed that he was teaching the Bible --- he talks about the Bible ‘rightly preached.’ He doesn’t mince words,” she said. “It is what it is.” Gouldthorpe led the building committee during the church’s renovation and expansion, which began around 1997 and was completed in 1999. In addition to other improvements, this project added a larger sanctuary to accommodate 60
the rapidly growing congregation. Gouldthorpe said, “Carl was very pleased with getting the addition because it allowed the church to move ahead, expand its mission.” Dorothy Gleason, the church’s sexton, sees Schmahl as, “A strong man, with a strong faith.” That faith, coupled with a strong vision, helped bring about an important new chapter in the life of the church. Seeing the influx of young families both in his congregation and in his community, Schmahl was convinced of Fauquier’s need for a new preschool. In September 2009, despite the declining economy, WPC opened the Warrenton Presbyterian School. Operating in refurbished Sunday School classrooms and offering various weekly programs, the preschool enrolled 32 students that first year; 13 of them were children or grandchildren of church members. Wilcox added, “Carl was instrumental in the founding of the school.” His support did not stop when the school opened; he often conducts the preschool’s weekly chapel services, and sometimes Mo comes along to give hugs and kisses.
By setting a standard for practical charity and personal growth, Schmahl leaves an enduring legacy. Jamie Allen remembers the deep impression Schmahl made when she was old enough to make her own declaration of faith and became a member of the church. “He taught me and the rest of the confirmands how big a deal confirmation is… Pastor Schmahl gave a small speech to all of us, and I could really tell how much he cared and how much he wanted us to grow in Christ and be active members of the church. It helped me realize the importance of the decision I was making.” According to Don Hollar, Schmahl “encourages sanctification as a lifelong process.” For many congregants and students, that process may be Schmahl’s most important gift. Hollar reflected, “We’re going to miss him, but he’s got my wheels turning. He’s helped many of us to mature in our faith journey and Bible understanding to the point that we can keep it going on our own…I don’t feel abandoned, at all. I think he’s matured us so that we can keep on going.” It seems likely that Schmahl, now taking a new path on his own faith journey, would think that’s pretty neat.
Well-wishers may send cards to Pastor Carl Schmahl, P.O. Box 187, Warrenton, Virginia, 20188. Schmahl’s Web site, “Carl’s Random Thoughts,” is at http://thewhitefields.com. Warrenton Lifestyle
