It’s great to be here. While I haven’t exactly been travelling down the dusty Winnemucca Road, if I had to choose one theme song for my life so far, it might be the iconic version of “I’ve Been Everywhere, Man” by Hank Snow (later covered by Johnny Cash, et. al.). As an US Air Force kid, (I was never a brat. Right, Mom?) I have seen almost every corner of the US, and my parents did a great job of instilling in my sister and me a sense of adventure, curiosity, and genuine interest in people wherever life or the military might take us.

This translates to my professional life, where I have almost literally been to the moon and back. I joke around the Warrenton Lifestyle office that I learned to make coffee at NASA. During a summer off from college, I held my first office job at a lab on the Langley Research Center receiving material samples from all manner of odd space-travel related equipment. It was a fascinating experience. Two major takeaways: a lot of what goes into space smells like scotch tape, and humans can accomplish amazing things with high powered computing and sufficient caffeine. Since then, I have managed an art gallery, rose at 4 am to bake fresh from-scratch cinnamon rolls at one of Blacksburg’s favorite bakeries, hosted a radio show, published a quarterly magazine, worked for a defense contractor on a systems engineering textbook, and a virtual buffet of other vocational adventures. My most recent foray into the local business environment, and my longest, was my role in one of Virginia’s most beautiful industries. I had the unbelievable privilege to spend nearly the last 10 years working in the Fauquier wine industry, where I had the opportunity to get to know the local business community on a personal level. This is why coming into this new role of Managing Editor during the Best of Warrenton Poll has been so enjoyable to me. I get the inside scoop --the 50,000 foot view-- of the best people, places and things to enjoy in this wonderful town.

Each year, our magazine hears opinions about the winners and those that are runners up. I have voted in years past, but through your suggestions, this year has been like having the personal recommendations of our entire readership delivered directly to my desk, and I can’t thank you enough. In going through your responses, I was encouraged to try some new restaurants and services that I had never experienced. Wow, do we have some great amenities in this community! It makes our ballots extremely tight, with no wide leads in any category, and ultimately some decisions show to be very difficult for the voters. It’s clear that the decisions come down to a matter of choice and taste.

History

The Fauquier Historical Society at 50 Part 2: Founded to save the Old Jail, the society has expanded its scope by John T. Toler Drawing on the wide range of skills brought to the organization by its volunteer members – including architects, builders, business operators, local historians and just plain willing hands – by early 1967, the Fauquier Historical Society had assembled a credible museum in the Old Jail. The historic 1808-1823 building proved to be a unique and inspiring home base, and during the second phase of the life of the society – which lasted almost three decades – operation of the museum, the collection of artifacts and historical research were the result of significant volunteer efforts. Management of the society was conducted during regular meetings of the board of directors, with committee

reports given regarding new projects or the progress of current research or collections already underway. For years, as many as 24 supporters from all parts of the county served on the board. In addition to those involved with the original incorporation of the society, familiar names from the early days include Judge John Alexander, Harry deButts, Tom Frost, C. Hunter Ritchie, C. Hunton Tiffany, Warren Breth, Alex Beverley, William Doeller, Philip Sanders, Randolph Carter, Dr. Evan Ashby, Alan Day, Harcourt Lees Jr., Hubert Phipps, D.P. Wood, Douglas Smith, Col. Marshall Wallach and John A.C. Keith. Assisting with genealogical research has always been an important function of the society, often answering inquiries from persons living far away, but with roots in Fauquier. For many years, Marshall historian John K. Gott, who served as the society’s genealogist, handled most inquiries.

Starting on July 1, 1995, the Old Jail Museum was staffed by paid docents, and open six days a week. The original docents were Ken Woodall, Leona Keen and Margaret Robinson. Mrs. Keen and Mrs. Robinson served until retiring in 2014.

Stripped of layers of white paint in 2006, the exterior of the 1808 building and the 1823 kitchen look much like they did in the early 19th century. A citrus-based solvent was used to gently remove the paint.

Other outreach efforts included sponsoring exhibits at the Old Jail through the Fauquier chapter of the Virginia Museum, and using the facility as the headquarters for the annual Garden Week. Often, society members would organize field trips to historic sites, both in the county and elsewhere. In order to take advantage of other resources available, close working relationships with the Virginia Historical Society, the Library of Virginia, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources and other groups and agencies were established. Work on the museum itself continued, with Rev. William Parkinson (1901-1983) leading the restoration effort for many years. An active member of the society from 1968 until his death, one of his first projects was returning the jail kitchen wing to how it appeared in 1824. During the restoration, he discovered the random-width pine flooring under several layers of linoleum and plywood. He also designed the old pine cabinets used to cover the electrical boxes.

Being an ancient structure, maintenance of the Old Jail has been continuous. In 1986, the chimneys were repaired and re-lined, and the following year, all of the ivy was stripped from the exterior stone walls, portions of which were crumbling. The Cathedral Stone Co. of Washington, D.C. was hired to do the extensive restoration work. Over the years, archeological digs in the exercise yard enclosed by the tall stone walls at the rear of the jail have yielded many interesting artifacts, including a collection of old bottles from Jeffries Drug Store on Main Street. OPEN TO THE PUBLIC During the early years, the Old Jail Museum was open to the public on Wednesdays and Saturdays from April through October. Normal hours were 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Later, the museum increased the number of days open each year from the original 60 to about 100. Perhaps the biggest challenge was keeping the museum open using volunteer docents, and the board member accepting the position of volunteer coordinator often had to fill in when volunteers couldn’t make it. Among those accepting the responsibility over the years were Mrs. R. K. Neilsen, Mrs. Frances Carter Ritter, Mrs. Chilton McDonnell, and finally, Nancy C. . Also notable for her dedication to the museum for many years was Mrs. Lucy Blackwell Jones. In anticipation of the U.S. Bicentennial, in 1975 the society launched a major fundraising effort in order to cover the costs of a major restoration of the Old Jail. Contributions from individuals, businesses and local governments eventually covered the $60,000 needed for the work, which was completed for the July 4, 1976 re-opening of the museum. Also in 1976, the society published a 1776 map of Fauquier County as part of the Bicentennial celebration. With the Old Jail Museum up and functioning, the society turned its focus on research and publishing, and in 1977, society member Bob Barron finished the Fauquier Historical Society’s “Bulletin No. 5: Gold Mines of Fauquier County.” Noting the many historical assets in the town, the society published its first 10

In addition to being an author and researcher, Nancy Chappelear Baird served on the Society Board for many years. She and her husband, Alvin V. Baird, were also major donors. “Walking Tour of Warrenton,” featuring descriptions and information about the town’s historic structures. The popular publication has been revised several times and distributed widely over the years, with the printing costs subsidized by the Fauquier National Bank (today’s The Fauquier Bank). The society commenced publication of its newsletter, News and Notes, edited by Roseanne Berkenstock, in August 1979. The first issue featured an article about the survey of historic structures in Fauquier County being conducted by architectural historian Cindy MacLeod and Mr. Barron. Originally to be called Country Places in Fauquier County, their surveys ultimately led to the publication of A Pride of Place: Rural Residences of Fauquier County, Virginia by the Fauquier County Department of Parks and Recreation in 2003. In 1980, Mrs. Meade Palmer took over the editorship of News and Notes, and in 1990, the position was assumed by the current editor, John T. Toler. Over the years, other society members have contributed to the body of Fauquier County history as well. Examples include Nancy Chappelear Baird’s Fauquier County, Virginia Tombstone Inscriptions (1970, revised in 1984, and updated in 2000 with Carol Jordan); The History of Methodism in

MAXWELL HARWAY President 1997-2002 Warrenton, Virginia (1981), by Jennings Flathers; and Jack Alcock’s Fauquier Families, 1759-1799 (1994). Noted county historian John K. Gott published a number of local history books while a member of the society, including The Years of Anguish, Fauquier County, Virginia, 1861-1865 (1965); Fauquier County in the Revolution (1976); High in Old Virginia’s Piedmont: A History of Marshall, Virginia (1987); and My Heart is So Rebellious: The Caldwell Letters (1991). A talented artist as well as a writer, Lee Moffett researched the history of Warrenton’s Courthouse Square, and in 1985 produced “The Many Faces of Courthouse Square,” a beautiful portrait representing the changes there, and an accompanying book, The Diary of Courthouse Square (1986, revised in 1995). In addition, wrote and illustrated Water Powered Mills of Fauquier County. THE MUSEUM GOES ‘FULL-TIME’ If the third phase of the life of the Fauquier Historical Society had a face, it would be Maxwell Harway, of Warrenton, who was voted onto the board in 1992, and served as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. “Mr. Harway believed that yearround access to the Old Jail Museum would add significantly to Warrenton’s Warrenton Lifestyle

Buying or selling a home? Who should you call? Christine Duvall is an incredible, kind, warm hearted realtor. Do not hesitate to hire her to represent you in one of the most exciting, and emotional experiences of your life. She worked endlessly to sell our home and find us the perfect new home! She refused to allow us to settle or over pay for a property. She is honest and through the entire process I had no doubt that she had nothing but the best interest of our family in mind. She is well informed and dedicated to her work. In fact, she even keep in touch with us during her well deserved vacation. I could not imagine a more positive home selling/ buying experience. I can only hope for my friends and family to have such a pleasant real estate journey, therefore I look forward to recommending her to everyone I can. ~ Y. Rodriguez We were referred to Christine by my sister who is a real estate attorney and I feel we really lucked out in finding her! She has consistently gone above and beyond in helping us find our new house AND in selling our old place. She has an impressive level of expertise in her field. She is easy to get in touch with and promptly responds to messages – I have even accused her of never sleeping because she is so responsive! She clearly loves what she does and is very, very good at it. I would recommend her without any reservation to anyone wanting to buy, sell or rent. ~ S. Ritchie We met Christine by chance but what a delightful and rewarding experience. We were relocating and for well over a year she patiently worked to educate and guide us to the best possible informed decision we could make. Our prior real estate ventures had been less than enjoyable. However, Christine expertise, experience and client commitment made this venture not only rewarding and enjoyable but also has lead to a lasting friendship. Christine listen to your requirements and presents properties that meet that criteria. She has assembled a team of reputable resources which can assist in making any real estate venture comfortable and educational. ~ J. O’Neal Amazing realtor!!! Helped us find and purchase our home. Very knowledgable of the housing market and gives her honest opinion on every aspect. Will contact again if we are ever in the market to sell/purchase again. ~ R. Moody Christine Duvall has been the greatest help through the whole process of selling our house. We had to get our house on the market fast and she came over and helped us declutter and stage. She answered all questions promptly and was very approachable, contactable, and personable. With her use of her professional photographer and her awesome advertising expertise, our house was under contract within 2 days and saw multiple showings in 2 days. She helped negotiate issues with the Buyers agent and made us feel assured that everything was proceeding along well, and that was just with the visible stuff. She even priced our house at a level to raise the value of the neighborhood. She knew we were moving overseas and helped reduce as much stress as possible. I would wholeheartedly trust Christine over and over again. I was sad to leave our home, but felt completely calm in her hands. She was awesome! ~ M. Standifer Christine helped us sell our house, she was such a wonderful help, she was extremely knowledgeable about the market in the area, she was constantly in touch and advised us on everything we needed to know. She really cares about her clients and treats them like friends and family. ~ K. Melton

Mason University, Mr. Harway worked closely with the university and the authors, Cathy Brown, John Toler and Walter Nicklin, to produce a county history that was both comprehensive and readable. The exterior appearance of the Old Jail was changed dramatically during 2006, when the many coats of white paint on the 1808 building and 1823 kitchen wing were carefully removed, revealing the original brick and stone walls. There were concerns that the old bricks would be too weak or porous, requiring another paint job, but this proved to be unnecessary.

The celebration in September 2000 commemorating Lafayette’s last visit to the U.S. in 1825 included a parade re-enacting the event. Charles Whitehouse, as Gen. Lafayette, waves to the crowd as he makes his grand entrance. With him are Dr. Will Allison, portraying Pres. James Monroe, and David Blake, as Lafayette’s son, George Washington Lafayette. Driving the carriage is Col. David Mailler as Col. A. Lavasseur, Lafayette’s secretary. tourist appeal,” according to the Fall & Winter 1995 issue of News and Notes. Aware that it would be impossible to triple the number of days open (from 100 to 300 days a year) with volunteers, Mr. Harway met with Warrenton and Fauquier County officials, as well as members of the School Board, and the Fauquier Chamber of Commerce. “After much discussion, a budget and staffing plan were accepted, and the town and county agreed to provide $10,000 each for the first year’s operation,” according to News and Notes. “Max Harway was unrelenting in his efforts to get the Old Jail open for tourists and school the children,” said then-Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sally Murray. Starting July 1, 1995, the museum was open six days a week, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Docents hired at that time were Leona M. Keen, Margaret Robinson and Ken Woodall. Remarkably, Mrs. Keen and Mrs. Robinson served as docents at the museum until retiring in March 2014. Elected president of the society in 1997, Mr. Harway commenced a number of significant initiatives, including a revised Walking Tour of Warrenton, and the design and acquisition of plaques marking the 12

historic structures on the tour, completed in 1998. As a result of months of planning and background work, in September 2000, Mr. Harway and board member Richard Gookin held the memorable “Salute to Lafayette,” commemorating the 175th anniversary of Gen. Lafayette’s last visit to the U.S. The three-day event included a parade, costume ball at Elway Hall, a Student Art exhibit, a concert, and exhibits at the John Barton Payne Building and the Warren Green Building. Mr. Harway resigned as president in 2002, relinquishing the role to copresidents Richard Gookin and Janet Hofer. However, he continued to serve on the board, and took on several more projects. Planning for Fauquier County’s 250th Anniversary started in 2006, and the Fauquier Historical Society, under the leadership of then-President Gookin and Mr. Harway, was involved in many aspects of the May 2009 observance. Of particular note was 250 Years in Fauquier County, the first new county history published since the 200th anniversary in 1959. At the time an adjunct history professor at George

MUSEUM DIRECTOR IS HIRED With the growth in the number of the historical programs, the amount of detailed work needed to catalogue acquisitions, and other responsibilities at the museum, in January 2007, the society hired Mrs. Frances Robinson Allshouse as its first paid Museum Director. Mrs. Allshouse, the daughter of the late Ripley Robinson and long-time docent Margaret Robinson, was the recipient of the Fauquier Historical Society’s 2002 scholarship, and had gone on to earn a degree in historic preservation from the University of Mary Washington. She was volunteering at the museum when asked by thenPresident Gookin to serve as the director. One of her first challenges was completing the renovation of the interior of the Old Jail following the exterior repairs done by Fauquier County. With the causes of chronic water damage eliminated, it was necessary to move cabinets, patch walls and paint in several areas of the old buildings. Additional banisters were installed in the stairwells of both buildings, and new lighting and security equipment installed in 2008. Introducing young students to museums and historic preservation is an important goal of the society, and in 2007 Mrs. Allshouse started the museum’s high school student internship program, and in 2013, initiated the college student internships. Mrs. Allshouse also brought new technologies to the museum and the Warrenton Lifestyle

society, first working with a local Web page hosting service to update and improve the society’s Web site (www. fauquierhistory.com). Now a more useful site, it includes a calendar of events, electronic versions of News and Notes going back to 1979, and other information. In addition, she set up social media accounts, including Facebook (in 2009) and Twitter (2012-13), in order to better communicate with the membership and the public. Aware of the significant history connected with the Warrenton Cemetery, Mrs. Allshouse originated several programs based there. In 2008, she organized the popular “Ghost Tours” in the cemetery, which have been an annual event since 2010, and the “Cemetery Dramas,” offered in 2009-10. Starting with an Eagle Scout’s project to map the graves around the Confederate Memorial in the Warrenton Cemetery, in 2011 Mrs. Allshouse launched a project to map the entire cemetery. Using high school students and volunteers, this significant undertaking is nearing completion. As part of Warrenton’s Bicentennial celebration, Mrs. Allshouse transcribed the minutes of the 1818 Town Council Minute Book. This project, which preserved information that was on the “endangered list” of historic items, was completed in 2011. Realizing the importance of connecting with other museums and historical organizations, Mrs. Allshouse enrolled the Old Jail Museum in the Virginia Association of Museums, the American Association of State and Local Museums, and the Small Museums Association. In addition to the networking opportunities, staff and board members now have opportunities to attend seminars and specialized training. Mrs. Allshouse continued in the role of museum director until May 2014, at which time she briefly served as

Museum Curator before resigning in July to pursue other career opportunities. “Frances came up with so many original ideas in order to foster public interest in our local history, the society and the Old Jail Museum,” said Mr. Gookin. “And she was a wonderful resource… Frances knows where all the bodies were buried, as far as historic facts and resources are concerned.” INTO A NEW PHASE Yakir Lubowsky, of Warrenton, was elected president of the Fauquier Historical Society in 2011, succeeding Mr. Gookin. A conservationist and advocate of heritage tourism, Mr. Lubowsky soon got the society involved in the Civil War Sesquicentennial observance (2011-2015), as well as establishing relationships with the Journey Through Hallowed Ground organization and working to get “Brentmoor, the Mosby Spilman House” on Main Street opened. On an operational level, traditional officers’ positions have been replaced with functional vice presidencies, including VPs of Finance, Membership, and Museum Operations. Earlier this year, a committee began planning a number of initiatives aimed at making the Old Jail Museum more self-sufficient, and increasing the offerings. Working Mrs. Allshouse, committee members determined that expansion of the museum’s gift shop would be a priority. After visiting museums in Manassas, Fredericksburg and Winchester, ideas began to take shape. For the first time since the museum opened, the interior layout of the 1808 building was altered, with the entrance door moved to the west end of the building. A new reception area and gift shop now occupies the former War Room. In order to staff the museum and gift shop, two new hires were made,

The ‘Salute to Lafayette’ was a project undertaken by Society President Max Harway (left) and Director Richard Gookin, who attended the event in period costume.

replacing the two docents who recently retired. Teresa Reynolds is currently running the gift shop, as well as serving as Acting Museum Director, and Christine Clements, a recent graduate of the University of Mary Washington, is the new Visitor Services Coordinator. After visiting other museums, it became apparent that a name change was in order. Although the name, “Old Jail Museum” had served well over the years, it was determined that while the historic jail was an important part of the museum, there was a wealth of other Fauquier history inside that should be included. After much discussion, a new, more descriptive name was adopted: “The Fauquier History Museum at The Old Jail.” New logos for the museum and the society were also created, and were unveiled at the re-opening on May 2.

COMMUNITYSpotlight

CHRIST IN ACTION PROVIDES Christ in Action is a national network of volunteers committed to providing comfort, counseling and resources during hugely emotionally traumatic events as faith-based first responders. Since 1998, when the notoriously disastrous floods to hit Cuero, Texas, Christ in Action (C-I-A) has volunteers collaborate to provide comfort and support to those affected by sudden tragedies. As an interdenominational NGO, the privately-funded grassroots organization calls on members of various churches to undergo a collegiate-level crisis training program. In this two day course, volunteers are given extensive preparation for a variety of crisis scenarios with Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) training. The goal of such education is to prepare volunteers for the unique type of psychological stress experienced by disaster survivors. Whether their homes have been destroyed, their loved ones are missing, or they are firefighters and paramedics enduring the stress of harrowing rescues, disaster survivors’ immediate emotional comfort needs can be met by someone with CISM training. C-I-A’s Operations Director Chris Zitzmann states, “CISM is intended to be emotional first-aid. We can’t provide long-term psychological care, but we can help people make some sense of their ‘new normal’ following a disaster.” One of Bethany Zitzmann, Chris’s wife’s, first deployments as a volunteer for Christ in Action was to the sites of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001. Volunteers provided quiet space, warm meals, and emotional support to the firefighters, police and emergency workers brought to the scenes to dig through the rubble. Nearly six years later, on a blustery spring day, local C-I-A volunteers responded after the horrific shooting at Virginia Tech. “Our volunteers supported the campus minister the basics of critical incident stress 16

management. He was able to provide the traumatized students with bottles of water and a listening ear. Some people need to talk things out in order to really process what has happened. Others just need a quiet space to begin working through the terrible feelings they’re experiencing. We were there to provide that. It made a difference.” Zitzmann further explains that the organizations compulsion to live out their mission statement, “Bringing Hope to America’s Families,” remains firmly supported by and rooted in their Christian faith. “We want to be an active representation of Jesus Christ-His hands and feet in Action. In Matthew 5, Jesus says, ‘Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in Heaven.’ We show love in practical, tangible ways to those who have lost hope so that our light shines for people to see, pointing them to Jesus and glorifying God.” (Matthew 5:13-16; Titus 3:14) Christ in Action has a fleet of

specialized support vehicles. The horsepower behind the hope includes a big-rig whose trailer is outfitted to provide hot showers to those displaced from their homes’ clean, comforting surroundings following disaster situations. They also maintain heavy duty trucks with trailers outfitted with Warrenton Lifestyle

CRISIS TRAINING AND RELIEF commercial kitchens large enough to feed hot meals to over 5,000 people per day. The charity is also able to provide local emergency services with additional power equipment, such as bulldozers and excavators for use in recovery and cleanup. Locally, C-I-A has volunteered to assist homeowners whose homes are totally lost to fire recover more quickly and with less financial devastation by completing structural demolition with charity’s donated time and equipment. Christ in Action’s administrative offices recently relocated to office space above Leading Edge Screen Printing on Walker Drive. The large equipment used by the charity will continue to be stored offsite in facilities outside of the area. While the charity’s 1,400 volunteers are formally trained in

crisis management, additional C-I-A volunteers step forward to provide operational support. Local volunteers have journeyman-level experience in a variety of construction trades, and the renovation of the new office space is being completed by such a crew. Full time staff members are responsible for raising their own salaries through missionary-style fundraising efforts with supporting churches and faith-based organizations. Chris Zitzmann came to the program through his home church, Mountain View Community Church in Culpeper, for whom he is thankful for their continued support of his missionary work. At its heart, the organization has a commitment to help people going through arduous and painful circumstances. C-I-A’s volunteers are trained for larger scale incidents, but that doesn’t mean that they are not in tune with the community’s daily needs. Zitzmann explains that during the relatively quieter times, volunteers

can be found helping the family of a newly diagnosed cancer patient prepare for their new schedule of doctors’ appointments and treatments, or comforting a family who has lost a child in a tragic accident. As Mr. Rogers is often quoted during times of crisis, chaos and stress as saying, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping,” Christ in Action is responding to that need.

Christ in Action’s new headquarters is located at 405 Rosedale Court in Warrenton, Virginia, just off of Walker Drive. Their website provides full information and history of the charity at ChristInAction.com.

These images, taken during the aftermath of the Moore, OK torandoes, show some of the help Christ In Action’s group provides.

10 WAYS

Parents Can Help Girls Preserve Their Self-Esteem

Research shows that girls experience a significant drop in self-esteem around puberty - often during the middle school years. They internalize negative messages they hear from others and the media. Messages about the ideal body type or ideal beauty can leave a girl with fractured self-esteem and an abundance of self-doubt. The damaging effects of chronic low self-esteem can surface at any time in her life, wreaking havoc with her relationships and happiness. It’s never too early to start helping your daughter create counter-balance in her world. This is your job as parents. Your home should be a safe place for her to question and explore her feelings, right? The problem is that many girls stop sharing with their parents around puberty and they engage more with friends - through social media or texting. Oftentimes parents find themselves on the outside looking in and feeling helpless. Here is my top ten list of ways in which parents can help to preserve their daughter’s self-esteem during the often emotionally-turbulent years of middle school and high school. 1. Praise her efforts and accomplishments. Everyone has a unique talent, if not many. Many of us, me included, did not discover this until well into adulthood. Help your daughter discover her talents be they academic, sports, art, music, communication skills, or whatever it may be. We live in a time where being athletic can be seen as the end-all, be-all - leading to a first class seat in the popular group. If your daughter is not athletic, help her find a place/group where she feels accepted. We all need to be a part of something. Early on you can guide her in a positive direction. 2. Talk about self-image. The media and fashion industry thrive on female insecurity. Body shame and eating disorders are at an all-time high. Help your daughter recognize and also reject harmful messages about her body. Encourage her to define beauty for herself. Talk about the temptation to compare and the desire to be popular. Help her realize her value is not in her looks. I believe that there is great value in each person. How do you define value?

3. Discuss social media traps. Teach your child to use social media with care. Remind her that people often brag on social media and they tend to put their lives in the best light. What they are seeing may not reflect reality. Having too many friends (such as on Facebook) can easily lead to social comparison. Great questions to ask her: What do you notice about other people’s status updates? How much time do you think you spend on social media and is it balanced with your other activities? How do you want to show up on social media? One of my teen clients recently shared with me that social media causes her so much anxiety, but she can’t stop. In other words, she doesn’t want to miss out. FOMO is the fear of missing out and it is a real issue for teens. Be especially aware of Ask.fm or Instagram’s “rate me” posts. This can be the perfect platform for bullying and dangerous rumors. Yet at the same time they can be so tempting to girls.

4. Give her permission to be herself. A girl needs to feel unconditionally loved and that she is “good enough” as is. I am talking about her physical appearance as well as her emotional world. I realize there may be concerns that you may need to deal with such as a difficult personality or possibly getting braces to help her feel good about her smile. All of us will strive for improvement if we genuinely feel accepted the way we are. If your daughter is having difficulty fitting in with her peers, you may want to seek counseling for further insight and advice. 5. Nurture positive friendships. Your daughter will experience a variety of friendships throughout her school years. Think back to the friendships you had when you were a teen. Some were likely positive and healthy while others were negative and hurtful. Some lasted and some did not. Help your daughter understand the sometimes changingnature of friendships and to resist the urge to hold on too tightly. Discuss what constitutes a good friend and healthy relationships. Help her distinguish between being treated rudely and misinterpreting a situation. Friendships that cause her pain are not necessarily negative. Many girls tend to see relationships in black and white. Either they are good or bad. The reality is that there are many possible categories for friendships. Ask her to come up with some of her own categories. You can also ask her to reflect on what type of friend she is to others. I often see parents who struggle in this area. 6. Teach her it’s okay to say NO. No is a complete sentence. Many girls feel as if they are being mean or rude if they say No to a friend. You can see how this can create problems for them in their social and dating world. A girl who is not comfortable saying No is lacking the ability to hold boundaries with herself and others. There is an epidemic of girls who have the people-pleaser personality type. I did. Standing up for herself and learning when it’s okay to say No is a skill you can teach and role model. Have her practice. We all want our daughters to be able to say No to a boy who is

not respecting her boundaries. You might be surprised how many strong, outspoken girls struggle in this area. 7. Challenge the ideal beauty standard. Girls are bombarded with images of the ideal beauty standard. Today it is being thin, having straight hair (straightened with a flat iron), dark eye liner and a flawless complexion. The media today often projects an unrealistic and often dangerous standard of beauty. I hear many girls talk about their dissatisfaction with their physical appearance and their weight. Talk to your daughter about her standard of beauty. We need to widen our definition of beauty so every girl can fit into it. 8. The real scoop on popularity. I have yet to meet a teen who really understands popularity -- or anyone else for that matter. Popularity is difficult to define. It’s elusive. It may always seem just out of reach. It’s something most girls want at some point and it can cause a lot of emotional pain. Most adults know the reality is that after you graduate, popularity means nothing. Encourage your daughter to explore her thoughts on popularity and challenge some of her negative thinking, such as “I could never be popular.” What if she were popular in a different sort of way? Again, this is not a black and white issue. In the grey is where she will find the answers she is seeking. You can help her. 9. Dealing with mean girls and mean comments. The truth is that all girls have experienced life on both sides. We have all been a bit mean to others, and also have been on the receiving end of it. An open discussion is what I recommend here. One of the best pieces of advice is to always validate your daughter’s feelings. Her feelings are real to her

and they can be scary. If she feels she is being picked on, then that is where you start the conversation. If she is experiencing emotional pain from being picked on or bullied, seek counseling to help her learn ways to stand up for herself and overcome the self-doubt she is most likely experiencing. 10. Stay connected - no matter what. Let’s face it, in today’s world with teens being so connected to technology, it can be challenging to keep our own connection to them. However, most teens really do want to have some quality time with parents and family members. Be creative. Listen to your daughter; don’t just talk at her. Spend time with her doing something she enjoys. Research shows that when parents offer an open, supportive environment at home, teenage girls are more likely to reach out in times of trouble. A daughter is a wonderful gift. Think back to when she was a little girl coming to you about everything. Well, she still is vulnerable and scared at times on the inside. Remember this is a difficult time for her and her hormones are causing her to feel even more emotional. So be patient, take a break, and get support. The end result will be worth it.

Fauquier Health Wound Healing Center Celebrates Success The Fauquier Health Wound Healing Center opened at 493 Blackwell Road, Suite 101A in Warrenton in June of 2009. For five years, it has filled an urgent need as the only facility of its kind in the area. Likely candidates for treatment are those suffering from diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, infections and wounds that haven’t healed within 30 days. One of the highly specialized treatments offered at the Wound Healing Center is hyperbaric

oxygen therapy, which works by surrounding the patient with 100 percent oxygen at higher than normal atmospheric pressure. This increases the amount of oxygen in the patient’s blood and — in the case of wounds — allows red blood cells to pass more easily through the plasma into the wound to heal it from the inside out. Diabetic foot wounds are an example of wounds that may benefit most from this type of treatment.

Specialized Wound Healing Care, Close to Home Fauquier Health Wound Healing Center employs the use of tissue oxygenation, vascular studies, tissue culturing and pathology, revascularization, bioengineered skin grafting and clinical or surgical debridement. For more information about the Fauquier Health Wound Healing Center or to make an appointment, call 540-316HEAL (4325).

Pediatrician Helps Children, and Parents, Manage Transition to School Back-to-school time can be exciting — and stressful — for children and parents alike. This is especially true if your child will be entering preschool or kindergarten. Many parents wonder what the teacher’s expectations will be, how they can know if their child is ready, and how they can help to ensure readiness and ease this important transition. Cheryl Kemerer, M.D., will discuss some

HAPPY &

Reading for a Powerful Life by Dr. Robert Iadeluca

A

lthough I have no memory of this, I am told that at the age of 2 ½ I could pick out words on subway car posters. At the age of five, while I was in Kindergarten, my mother took me to the local public library to get a card in my name. The librarian explained that before doing so it was necessary that I go to school to learn to read. Miffed by this affront to her son, my mother instructed me to go to a nearby shelf, pick out a book, and bring it back to read. I still remember clearly. It was the Blue Fairy Book. I started reading out loud: “Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess who lived in a castle at the top of the hill.” Said the librarian: “Here’s your card.” I cite these incidents not to vaunt myself for after all I was merely the product of my mother’s upbringing but to pay tribute to her realization

24

of the importance of reading in early childhood Reading opens one’s mind and leads one toward searching in all directions. Being spiritually curious, I found myself at the age of seven in the library browsing among books in this subject area. I still remember ending up reading about Rosicrucian Cosmoconception. Although I didn’t truly understand it and did not continue following up on it, it is an example of reading showing different points of view and helping one to grasp new concepts. This ability has affected my entire life. And such an ability (or lack thereof) will affect tremendously the lives of those students who this month will start a school year whether it be elementary school, middle school, high school or college level. Of all the academic subjects, reading is the

basic. One can not become a historian without being able to read history. To become a mathematician or scientist or engineer one must be able to read the instructions. At the age of twelve I became interested in raising pigeons. Certainly it is conceivable to indulge in this hobby without reading a line. But reading teaches us things we didn’t know, exposing us to new ideas. I became a regular devotee to the public library learning about types of pigeons I didn’t know existed and methods of raising them. Raising them involved mating various breeds, this leading me to an interest in genetics, a topic which continues to interest me and which I continue to study. Reading about one topic therefore led me to a different subject which, in turn, led me gradually to my current career. Reading can help one to relax. Warrenton Lifestyle

The U.S. Army recognized this. Combat has often been described as 90 percent boredom and 10 percent terror. During World War II, the infantry made available to soldiers paperback books for their use during the quieter periods. Following the war I commuted for five years on the Long Island Railroad between my home and my work in New York City. It was a three-hour round trip. Some of the passengers slept. Some played cards. I read. I averaged reading a book a month, some of them of a light nature but most of them non-fiction books helping me to learn new subjects. It was while reading Gibbon’s “Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” during my commuting that I began to understand and enjoy history which had not been my favorite subject in high school. Gibbon helped me to understand that there was little or no difference between my friends and acquaintances and the people in Rome two thousand years ago. I now saw history not as a series of dates but as interactions among people. At a later date I wrote an essay on my five years of reading while commuting entitling it “My School on Rails.” Some of my acquaintances are surprised when they learn that when television turned to all digital, I did not make the change on my set and it is now inoperable. When I decide to retire and will have more time, I will undoubtedly reactivate it. “But how do you know what is going on in the world?” I am asked. Let us pause to look at the facts. Of every 30 minutes of TV news, 10 minutes are advertising. Let us also consider that one is the captive of the commentator who chooses what is to be discussed. Ninety-nine percent of

what is going on in the world is never mentioned. Add on to that the well-known fact that the TV comprehension level is “dumbed down” to a common denominator. I, on the other hand, read the daily newspaper for about an hour each morning on my computer. I go from national to international to local to the opinion pages, then quickly scan the health, scientific and technological pages. In all cases I choose the articles I want to read, bypassing most of the gore which make TV headlines. As a child I was fortunate enough to regularly receive toys and games but in addition not a birthday or Christmas arrived without my receiving books both from my parents and my extended family. These were not only books that stimulated my mind and sense of adventure; they were always either at or slightly above my reading level. Knowing my constant curiosity plus love of reading, the result was a constant increase in my vocabulary and an improvement in my grammar. I find it no coincidence that I had been in the first grade for one week when at the teacher’s request, the principal entered to listen to my reading a book out loud. He then asked me to follow him to another room and suddenly I found that I had become a student in the second grade. He had not asked me to draw. He did not give me any arithmetic problems to solve. His decision was based solely on my reading ability. Reading is a door opener. Reading makes one think. Reading improves one’s writing skills. Reading strengthens spelling ability and leads to pronouncing words properly. Reading

stimulates creativity. And as one matures, the ability to read enables one to communicate with more people and meet people of different calibers and cultures. Reading leads to knowledge and knowledge is power. It develops the brain’s memory. It improves one’s grammar. It is an aid to obtaining a career not just a job. It helps create close friendships and when the friends are not available, then the ability to entertain one’s own self. Books and periodicals are my friends. The day may come when my body no longer does what I want it to do and I can no longer leave home. However, I will not be alone. Philosophers, statesmen, scientists, historians and many others are out there waiting to satisfy my endless curiosity. Reading continues to change my whole life. It is my sincere hope that it will change yours.

“Philip Mulford was the most constant force in our divorce process. It was a very testy time and Philip kept both of us on an even keel as we worked towards an equitable solution.
