APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE. Because there’s about a hundred hospitals in Virginia, it’s rare for one hospital to receive three statewide recognitions. But it’s happened for Fauquier Hospital. On November 5, Norris A. Royston, Jr., M.D., was elected President of the Medical Society of Virginia. He’s a family physician in Marshall and former president of the hospital’s medical staff. Rodger Baker, President and Chief Executive Officer of Fauquier Hospital, was elected Chairman of the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association on October 27. Both elected by their peers, both highly respected. To top it off, Trice Gravatte, M.D., recently received the Virginia Medical Society’s Salute to Service award for service on behalf of the uninsured and underserved. He’s the founding medical director of the Fauquier Free Clinic, volunteers at the Free Clinic of Culpeper and serves on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Association of Free Clinics. The Fauquier Hospital and its Board of Trustees congratulate Dr. Royston, Dr. Gravatte and Rodger Baker for serving the citizens of Fauquier and adjacent counties. We’re proud these professionals are leading Virginia’s top health care associations. But what’s really outstanding is what they do each and every day for patients and their families back home. Now that’s worth the applause.

Fauquier Habitat for Humanity Building Hope and Homes

N

ewcomers to the Warrenton area are always impressed by the natural beauty of the Piedmont. Lovely homes grace hillsides dotted with champion Thoroughbreds, cattle, corn, orchards, and vineyards. The timeless backdrop of the Blue Ridge provides a special serenity. Still, like most communities, Fauquier County has pockets of poverty and struggles to preserve affordable housing. With the broad support and generous spirit of residents, churches of all faiths, and the business community, Fauquier Habitat for Humanity is focused on its mission of eliminating poverty housing, one home at a time. Habitat for Humanity is a highly respected worldwide charity whose unique approach provides a helping “hand up” rather than a “handout.” Jack Flikeid, Executive Director of Fauquier’s Habitat affiliate, emphasizes the importance of

community partnership. “We work with lower-income families, churches, community volunteers and sponsors to create decent and affordable housing.” Candidate homeowners must have steady income and demonstrate responsible use of credit. They also invest 400 hours of “sweat equity,” pitching in with other volunteers to dig footings, pound nails, or whatever is required. Says Flikeid, “Through donations and volunteer labor and skilled services, direct costs for each home are kept to a minimum. Habitat homeowners repay those costs through affordable mortgages, which are then used to build more homes.” For young families and workers in the helping and service professions who struggle to find affordable housing, Fauquier Habitat for Humanity gives hope for the future. To date, Fauquier Habitat has

Each is stickbuilt by volunteers and neighbors and reflects the simple, classic styles seen in so many country homes. Habitat volunteers come from all walks of life. (Habitat cont’d from page 3) their talents, or willingness to learn! Fauquier Habitat’s President, Liz Howard, says a “build” is a truly unique experience. “We’re blessed with so many generous and civic-minded volunteers. Some have backgrounds as builders, engineers, or in the skilled trades. Others are professionals— executives, doctors, attorneys. Some of us have no experience whatsoever. But, when we come together on a build, all of us are willing and eager to learn. From ‘nailwhappers’ to ‘chalklinesnappers’, everyone – young and old – pitches in.“ In September 2005, Fauquier Habitat dedicated its first home built entirely by women. From blocks to walls, they did it all! More than 250 volunteers participated, reinforced by generous donations of materials and services from the local business community. Two homes are now going up on Haiti Street, as volunteers come together to assist their neighbors and eliminate poverty housing. The spirited work, “pot luck” food and fellowship of a Habitat project are always enjoyed, but the volunteers will also tell you about the deep satisfaction they gain in seeing the fruits of their labors and making such a lasting difference. Participants are often amazed by the sense of

accomplishment, satisfaction and joy that comes from learning to raise walls, install trim, or otherwise lend a “helping hand-up”. Jan Sickel, a volunteer who chairs Fauquier Habitat’s building committee, is emphatic. “I never imagined how much I would benefit from the experience. It’s addictive, and I’m hooked.” Fauquier Habitat’s Women’s Build Fauquier Habitat for Humanity provides unique citizens—and vital volunteers. Dok Klaus: PCs Upgrade or New

T

he Holidays are close and you might be asking yourself, “Is this a good time to buy one of those special holiday offers to upgrade or replace my PC?” The answer is, “It depends. What kind of PC do you have now, and what do you use it for?” If you don’t wish to change programs on your PC but would like to increase the performance, then you’ll most likely be fine with minor upgrades such as added memory (ca. $60) and a new hard drive. In addition, it’s often necessary to run some cleanup routines including de-cluttering unnecessary programs running in the background. If you are just running out of disk space, a replacement of the hard drive will do the job for less than $90. A new hard drive is usually much bigger, faster and quieter – another plus! If, however, you plan to run newer programs such as Microsoft Office 2003 and even the latest Antivirus programs, you will find out that they require Windows 2000 or XP. In the long (or even short) run you will have to upgrade to XP. So, should you upgrade your existing PC to XP or buy a new one?

December 2005

If your PC is older than three or four years, I would recommend replacing it. Those PC’s hardly meet the minimum hardware requirements to run XP, and believe me, an XP PC running with the minimum system requirements isn’t much fun to work with. It’s just too slow for up-to-date programs. Why don’t you just pass it on to a little kid (for simple games or homework), and get a new one. What does a new desktop PC cost? The prices range from $300 to $1000 and more. $300 is the minimum for a new tower (including mouse and keyboard). You can save money by keeping existing peripherals, such as your monitor and printer. This PC will be faster than your old PC, and there is room for improvements like memory/hard drive/video card updates at some later point. This kind of PC usually includes 256 MB RAM, 40 GB hard drive, XP home, a modem, an Ethernet card, a CD-burner and a simple processor like a Celeron. A PC like this is fine for simple letter writing, word processing, emailing and normal internet use. It’s more than good enough for playing card games (like Solitaire) and other games

that don’t use real-time video simulations. If this kind of computer is good enough for you, then you can stop here. But if you are envisioning a computer with cutting-edge technology and capabilities, keep reading, and I’ll lead you through some of the most popular features. If you want to be able to play a DVD on your PC, you need a DVD-ROM drive. They are becoming the standard, but usually they are combined in one drive – a CD-RW/DVD-ROM. For a little more money you can now buy DVD/CD readwritable drives. But to confuse you even more, there is not just one type of DVDs. As of now there are DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and even doublelayer DVDs! An attractive feature is the ability to put memory cards from digital cameras into the front of the desktop for easy photo transfer. In the mid-range desktop PC’s, (See Dok Klaus on page 14)

(Dok Klaus cont’d from page 11) an adaptor for about 6 different types of cards is built into the front of the PC. A DVD/CD burner is included, as well as a 160GB hard drive (preferable a faster SATA hard drive). You will most likely find a microphone, a headphone, a couple of USB and a firewire plug available in the front of the computer case. The processor will be faster – an Intel Pentium 4 or an Athlon XP or 64. The RAM will be 512 MB. These are pretty powerful PC’s and should work well for almost everybody. If you are into serious computer gaming or photo/video editing, you need a fast computer. The latest games use real-time simulations and animation, and need a lot of computer power to run smoothly. PC’s for gamers need faster video cards – at a price tag of $500. If you add the latest and

14

fastest processors, a fast motherboard, a good power supply, a fast hard drive (e.g. SATA drives with 10000 RPM - rotations per minute) topped off with 1 or 2 GB of fast RAM (memory), your receipt will be shooting up into the $2000 range. Then, if you go for top status with a big LCD screen and a super sound system, you are looking at a $3000 + package. Please keep in mind, that when you buy a new system you might need to transfer programs and data over to the new PC. But, unfortunately, you usually just can’t copy your programs over to the new PC – they need to be reinstalled. And you will need the installation disks and files to do this. You might have to download updates from the internet. Some companies might not exist anymore, and program versions for XP might not be available. But don’t

despair. There are ways to emulate older operating systems on XP. In most cases, you can get XP versions of the same or similar programs, but keep in mind, that this might cost more. Shopping for a new computer is like buying a new car – there are so many options. It all depends on what you want and what you can afford. Be careful with the sales reps. Remember that it is their job to sell you as much as they can. If you feel overwhelmed by the many decisions, just bring a computer-savvy friend along with you to help you find the right computer. Take time to decide. It’s worth it in the long run. Dok Klaus owns Dok Klaus Computer Care in Warrenton and can be reached at 428-2376 or visit his office at 30 Ashby Street.

Gift Shopping Guide for Teens by Lily Rose This month, the majority of Warrenton’s residents will be spending a substantial amount of time shopping around in search of those perfect, hardto-find gifts. This meticulous attitude towards finding the perfect gift comes from the heart; giving is the theme of the Christmas season, and pleasing the receiver is always a reward. Whether a

parent or a peer, you become a target of exhaustion and overwhelming anxiety as you look for something to suit a teenager’s preference. Relax. It is hardly necessary to leave town to buy the right gift. The main goal to focus on when finding a teen’s gift is usefulness. First step is to ask the teenager what their general likes and dislikes are. Trying to get a specified wish list out of them can cause difficulty because costly and highly unlikely items tend to surface on paper, though asking

specifics on items such as CDs, books, and DVDs is suggested. Obtaining this information sets the grounds for gift-idea accumulation. Depending on the intended expenditure, there are certain techniques that serve as guidelines. One of the most common ways parents present gifts to their teenagers is the “one big gift and an assortment of cheaper presents” technique. Another highly ranked presentation is the “theme” of gifts, where the teen receives a collection of related

We will occasionally publish a portion of a photo of some person, place or thing uniquely Warrenton. Those that correctly identify the photo will be put into a drawing with the winner receiving a check for $25.00.

gifts, usually pertaining to their hobbies or activities. A more recent and sometimes less expensive concept in ideas for presents is “freedoms and privileges,” which may be given in the form of responsibility rather than through objects, and “support for the self-sufficient,” instead of treats and necessities. If teenagers are responsible for paying for cars or cell phones, for example, gas cards or extra minutes are more useful than a new wardrobe. Once a decision based on a technique that best fits the budget is made, it is time to decide what to buy. When you think of Christmas shopping, the first image that appears in the mind is the crowded malls and long lines at stores. This is what turns a purchase from the initial act of kindness into a state of hassle. By shopping in Warrenton, where stores are more conveniently located, the shopping event can be anticipated, not with anxiety and distress, but with a joyful, holiday attitude. Warrenton’s assortment of shops and businesses offer a collection of potential Christmas items, whether they become stocking-stuffers sold at boutiques on Main Street or the “big gift” from the local department stores. With all the expansive technology on the

December 2005

market and teens’ growing desire to own the latest works, Warrenton provides us with the accessibility. Rather than leaving the town for pricey iPods or the X-Box 360, one can easily stop by Wal-Mart, or Sears, where up-to-date entertainment equipment is sold. There are no rules for picking the perfect gift, and there is no penalty for getting other’s opinions, especially the teenager. If the teen says he or she would prefer not to have a certain gift, listen to him or her. Commonly, young men, from their youth until the end of college (and sometimes beyond), love video games. If your son is constantly seen sitting in front of the TV, holding a highly intricate device, twirling his thumbs lively, and throwing in occasional exclamatory sounds, an idea of a theme should arise. Ask what his ideal game system would be and make that the number one priority on your gift list for him. Then, buy his favorite type of games appropriate for that specific system. To further the game theme, look for accessories such as game controllers, game chairs, or memory cards. Young men seem to adore electronic gadgets; stores like Radio Shack and Coconuts

provide just the sort that will guarantee contentment. A unique theme that could potentially satisfy a teenage daughter (or possibly a son as well) is interior décor for her room. Teenagers feel that, deprived of their own private house, the bedroom is personal territory, and it is part of their nature to accentuate the living space in which they reside. New bed sheets to match a certain trend or decorative items such as candles, picture frames, posters, or artistic storage cases all prove to please. Keeping in mind that Borders bookstore opened in November and is a great source of books, music, and more, it will not be difficult this holiday season to contain your Christmas shopping for teenagers inside of Warrenton. Just remember the key technique that applies to the teenager you are shopping for: usefulness should always be factored into the purchasing process. More importantly, however, the feeling within determines the meaningful gift. Keep that thrill alive by shopping locally and enjoying the task of giving. Lily Rose is Copy Production Manager of The Falconer newspaper at Fauquier High school, where she is a senior.
