Fauquier Community Theatre Delivers Another Gift for the Holidays

O

by Dr. Robert B. Iadeluca

ne of the funniest and most often performed plays of American Theater will be presented this December by the Fauquier Community Theatre in Vint Hill. Written by American playwright Joseph Kesselring, Arsenic and Old Lace is a fast paced play with great witty dialogue and unforgetable scenes. The first Broadway production of the play was at the Fulton Theater in New York City. Directed by Bretaigne Windust, it opened on 10 January 1941, later transferred to the Hudson Theater and closed there on 17 June 1944 after having played 1,444 performances. It has become best known through the film version -- filmed in 1941 but not released until 1944 -- starring Cary Grant and directed by Frank Capra. It is a black comedy play about serial killers, the plot centering around a family where mental illness is rampant. The farce revolves around Mortimer Brewster, a theatre-hating drama critic who must deal with his crazy family and local police in Brooklyn, New York. He debates whether to go through with marrying, Elaine, the woman he loves. His family includes two spinster aunts, Aunt Abby

18

and Aunt Martha, who think they are performing a charity by poisoning lonely elderly men. They treat each of these men to a glass of home-made elderberry wine laced with arsenic, strychnine and “just a pinch of cyanide. Their brother believes he is Teddy Roosevelt and spends most of his time either charging upstairs, thinking he is charging up San Juan Hill, or else in the basement where he is digging locks for the Panama Canal. He sees those persons who are put out of their misery by his two sisters as victims of Yellow Fever and buries them in the canal locks. Another brother, Jonathan, is criminally murderous and -- due to botched plastic surgery to evade the authorities -- now looks like horror-film actor Boris Karloff. (The original part was played by Karloff himself.) He arrives at the house accompanied by a Dr. Einstein with whom he plans to set up an operating room in the house so the doctor can give new faces to criminals. See Theater on page 20

It is filled with weird characters behaving outrageously. Those lovers of the performing arts who want an evening of frantic action, ironies, comic routines, and dramatic surprises will find Arsenic and Old Lace measuring up to their expectations.
