Cover Photo: “Frozen” by Faith Maddox This image was captured in the late afternoon of early February, 2010. It was made possible by a Nikon D700, an 80-200 lens and very tall snow boots. Correction from last month to a caption of the A and B Restaurant.
The caption indicates this establishment is the current site of Foster’s Grill. The A and B Restaurant actually was located on property where the current Red, Hot and Blue Restaurant sits. The A and B was the sight of a fire in the early 1970’s that did extensive damage and was subsequently demolished. 23 YEARS Clockwise from top: The pressroom in 1992; Tony and Holly in 1999; the Piedmont Press building just before grand opening in 2005.
Piedmont Press & Graphics Marks 23 Years Serving Warrenton Staying in business for more than two decades takes perseverance, commitment, and the unflinching support of both a loyal staff and, most importantly, faithful customers. Piedmont Press & Graphics has all of this and more, which explains why the full-service printer is celebrating its 23rd anniversary on November 5. Over the last two-plus decades, Piedmont Press owner Tony Tedeschi has both created history and followed in its footsteps. Tedeschi grew up in a printing family; his father was a commercial printer, and introduced Tony to his first printing press when he was just four years old. Tony decided early on that he wanted to continue the family tradition. “The printed word is the most powerful form of communication,” Tony explains. “Print has so much variety. It’s limitless as far as what you can create—and how you tell your story.” Like the world around it, the printing world was very different in 1987. Digital printing was unheard of, and nobody worried about creating electronic copies of their brochures to post on their company Web sites. Over the years, Piedmont Press—which started as TR Press in 1987 and took the Piedmont Press name in 1994 when the two companies merged — has evolved along with its customers’ needs, bridging classic methodologies with emerging technology. Today, Piedmont Press can handle virtually any print job imaginable—from simple copies and business cards to four-color magazines. The company’s five-person-strong prepress and graphic design team, led by Holly Tedeschi, Tony’s wife and a 20-year veteran of the company, completes the full-service printing and design services that Piedmont Press & Graphics offers the greater Fauquier County community. “We take great pride in having served our community for the last 23 years,” Tony said. “Our longevity is a testament not just to our success as a business, but more significantly, to our customers’ continued confidence in our ability to serve them.”

From the Publisher
Christmas Eve and the Feast of the Seven Fishes I come from a large, middle-class Italian family where food and quality time were the centerpieces to all holiday celebrations, especially Christmas. Christmas Eve was often spent at the home of my two favorite aunts, Yolanda and Helen. Italians know how to eat and those two aunts could really cook. Southern Italians prepare a multicourse banquet known as the Feast of the Seven Fishes. It is a tradition most popular in southern Italy and we mangia on seafood for the Christmas holiday. Seven or thirteen dishes are traditional as odd numbers bring luck to Catholics: the seven sacraments or thirteen apostles. Sometimes we veered from these numbers often preparing far more dishes or, today, with my small family and Irish wife, we will often make only three. The Polimeni and Tedeschi clan was usually around 30 hungry people representing three or four generations. Lots of cousins to play with and everyone at the house was an ‘aunt’ or ‘uncle’ even if they weren’t a blood relative. Wine was poured from giant jugs that were staffed by my grandfather or a senior uncle. We started early getting to our aunts’ home around lunchtime and having a ‘sangwich’ or a snack before being ushered outside to play. The women all converged on the kitchen where my two aunts had been cooking for probably three days. No one questioned that they always had two stocked refrigerators and a separate freezer. The men retired to the den to watch a ballgame or the patio to play cards and listen to the radio. Sometimes a game of horseshoes would ensue. We ate family style with dishes parading out of the kitchen every few minutes for hours. We ate everywhere, inside, outside, standing, sitting. I look back and realize I have never seen so much food in one place except maybe in the dining hall of a cruise ship. The smell of fresh bread, calamari, macaroni and gravy (pasta and tomato sauce), monkfish, fresh vegetables, soups, chestnuts and desserts still linger in my head. Meals lasted for several hours so we often ate in shifts. And the conversation flowed starting in English but often ending with the adults telling jokes and stories in Italian, my Uncle Frank flexing his command of a dozen or more dialects. This may be part of the secret that Italians have to eating big meals – belly shaking tales to keep the food moving inside you. My family never forgot why they were there. They couldn’t help think and reflect on the good times they were having and how they had weathered the depression, the war, and being poor. They were mostly the sons and daughters of immigrants that struggled to achieve the American dream. So, each Christmas, I do my best to remember these traditions and create new ones to share with my children. It won’t be the same as it was at my aunts’ house. That can never be recaptured. But those times will always be cherished and appreciated.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from all of us here at The Warrenton Lifestyle Magazine and Piedmont Press & Graphics! 8

Fauquier History
Warrenton Volunteer Fire Company Continues a Long Tradition of Service December 2010 marks the 86th Anniversary of the Warrenton Volunteer Fire Company, an organization that has grown and kept up with the times, but has never lost touch with the community it serves. In 2008, the fire company completed a major expansion and renovation of the firehouse on Shirley Avenue.
Shortly after the new firehouse was completed, firemen demonstrated their ladder truck, the first vehicle of that type in Fauquier County. It was purchased used from the City of Bristol, Va.
The renovation and 25,110 square foot addition cost $3.6 million, and was designed by the architectural firm of LeMay Erickson Wilcox. The completed project earned the Warrenton Fire Company the International Association of Fire Chiefs “Gold Renovation Award” in a worldwide competition. The expansion, recent equipment upgrades, and the merger with the Warrenton Volunteer Rescue Squad is fully in line with the organization’s motto, “Warrenton Volunteer Fire Company, Serving into the Future.” The company’s administrative officers are President Roy Crane, Vice President Ralph Monaco, Secretary Wade Kastorff, Treasurer Claude Davenport, and Chaplain Pete Demaree. Line officers are Chief Scott Ross and Asst. Chief Sam Myers. They are assisted by captains Greg Gardner (Training), Jason Golden (EMS), Steve McFarland (Suppression/Safety) and Rodney Woodward (Special Services), and lieutenants Jason Koglin, Shawna Brown and Trey Mettinger. These men and women are the latest in a long line of volunteers and professionals who have made a commitment to serve. Fire Department Continued on page 12 10

Firefighting in the Early Days Warrenton’s first recorded effort to provide fire protection goes back to 1852, when then-Mayor James Vass Brooke purchased three dozen fire buckets and some ladders that were placed in convenient spots around town. The next year, eight men were employed at $1 per night, to patrol the town from 10 p.m. until daylight to prevent the outbreak of fires. In 1872, the Warrenton Town appointed a committee of H. C. Yates, John R. Spilman and John B. Withers to investigate the organization of a hook and ladder company, and to see how much assistance, if any, could be obtained from fire insurance companies to aid in acquiring its equipment. While the options were being studied, the Warrenton House, a hotel on part of the lot now occupied by the post office, was destroyed by a fire that spread through all of the buildings up to the corner of present-day Main and First streets. For immediate protection then, the committee asked permission to buy seven chemical fire extinguishers; two were kept in the mayor’s office, and the other five “given to good and responsible men in different parts of the town.” Also in response, a volunteer group called the Hook and Ladder Company of Warrenton was formed, with John R. Spilman as the fire chief. An order was given to buy a fourwheel firefighting unit “with proper equipment to cost $850.” Pulled to the scene of a fire by the firefighters, the unit was 20 feet long. Equipment consisted of several extension ladders, short ladders, scaling ladders crowbars, axes, picks, firehooks and 20 leather fire buckets. Originally, the town’s water supply and the water for fighting 12
fires came from public wells located throughout the town. When the town’s water system was completed in 1891, a twowheel reel and several hundred feet of regulation fire hose were purchased, and in 1899, the company added two Little Giant engines (50-gallon stave barrels mounted on two wheels and equipped with a two-handed pump) and 100 feet of hose. All of the fire apparatus was housed under the Courthouse steps, and the ringing of the Courthouse bell signaled a fire. In 1891, D. P. Wood Sr. was appointed fire chief, and nineteen other men joined him to form the Alert Hose Company.” A second company was formed with J. A. Utterback as chief, and the two companies were known as the “Old Men” under Mr. Wood, and the “Young Men” under Mr. Utterback. However, by 1909 neither fire company was very active. The only equipment was the two-wheel hose cart and 500 feet of hose, and this was not much help in fighting Warrenton’s biggest fire, which happened on the night of Nov. 22, 1909. The blaze apparently started in the loft of Bradburn & Clatterbuck’s Livery Stable on present-day Ashby Street, and devastated the area from the Warrenton Supply Company, across Waterloo Street, onto Courthouse Square and down Winchester Street. The only way firefighters could bring the blaze under control was to dynamite structures in the path of the fire, creating firebreaks and letting the fire burn itself out. In 1921, the town council purchased its first piece of motordriven firefighting apparatus, a 1916 Chevrolet truck equipped with a 50-gallon chemical tank and a hose carriage. It cost $2,815. Charles M. Jeffries was the fire chief, but resigned after a year, and William G. Bartenstein was appointed chief. Fire Department Continued on page 14 Warrenton Lifestyle

Fire Department Continued from page 12
WVFC is Born Early in 1924, Chief Bartenstein, B. H. Smith, Alex Hamilton, Alwyn Ash, Lester Burke and C. Irvin Garrett met to discuss organization of a fire department. Citizens responded enthusiastically, and by October 1924, the company was “unofficially” in action. The new company was given space for its equipment on the ground floor garage of the Municipal Building, located on the corner of present-day Main and N. Fourth streets. The garage had been used to house a steamroller, and after much work, the space was made usable for the firemen. Upstairs, the The ruins of the west end of Warrenton’s business district police department and town manager’s office were in the back of smolder after the Great Fire of 1909. Courthouse and the building, and meeting rooms in the front. County Jail were spared, but many of the buildings on Ashby, Waterloo and Winchester Street were lost. Burnedout shell of Carter Hall stands at left.
The fire alarm was a steam whistle located down the hill at the old Warrenton Electric and Ice Company owned by M.J. O’Connell. The plant operators sounded the alarm – a short blast for a fire in town, a long blast for out of town. On Dec. 3, 1924, the formal organizational meeting was held, Mayor Thomas E. Frank presiding. Mr. Bartenstein was formally elected chief, A.S. Hamilton first lieutenant, Alwyn Ash second lieutenant, Lester Burke, president, C. Irvin Garrett secretarytreasurer, and C.C. Burke official truck driver. Members paid dues of 10 cents a month, or $1 per year. Regular drills were held, and soon they were able to demonstrate their expert hose work to the town council. The only member who had a car was Chief Bartenstein. Other firemen went to the fires on foot, or were picked up by the fire truck on its way, but the driver was never to leave the firehouse without another fireman on the truck.
From 1924 to 1977, the WVFC was headquartered in the Town Hall on Main Street, Shown with two of their trucks at the old firehouse are Albert Miller (left) and Aubrey Jenkins.
The infant fire company’s first fundraising effort was a minstrel show held on May 20, 1925 on the stage of the “Opera House” on Courthouse Square. On the morning of the first performance, the company was called to West View, Miss Effie Smith’s home near Bethel, where a log kitchen attached to the main dwelling was on fire.

the clutch on the Chevy truck kept slipping, and the firemen had to push the truck uphill, all the way to the firehouse. But weary as they were, the show went on and about $400 was realized. The money was applied to payments on the Seagraves 350-gallon pumper the town council had purchased.
After the minstrel shows came the firemen’s carnival. The first was held July 11 and 12, 1930, on the Clerk’s Office lawn. The carnival grossed $4,700, and the firemen netted about $3,500, which paid off the balance on the Seagraves and made a down payment on a new Ahrens-Fox 500-gallon pumper. In later years, one of the biggest drawing cards was the firemen’s parade, first held in 1946. With bands, floats and dozens of fire Fire Department Continued on page 16 14

Fire Department Continued from page 14 engines, it was something unique in the county’s experience, and the crowds followed it to the carnival grounds. While they steadily upgraded their firefighting apparatus, the firemen still had to fight fires without protective gear, except what could be improvised. When Fielding’s Flour Mill at the railroad depot caught fire in the early morning of June 25, 1925, firemen used metal highway signs to shield themselves from the intense heat as they fought the blaze. Water pressure was not strong enough to allow them to throw water on the fire from a safe distance. Fighting fires during the winter could be particularly difficult. When Miss Rena Allison’s apartment house, now the Moffett Apartments, caught fire, the temperature was below zero. After the fire was out, the firemen had a problem handling the frozen hose. They dragged it to the firehouse two blocks away, where it had to be thawed before it could be dried and repacked. One of the most dangerous fires the Warrenton firemen encountered in the early days happened in August 1944 at Calverton. A train had derailed, and eleven tank cars were ruptured, spilling 88,000 gallons of gasoline in the middle of the village. Flames spread through the overturned cars and a river of fire flowed down the tracks. Vincent Jacobs’ store and the depot were destroyed, but firemen were able to contain the flames and save the remainder of the village. For years, the WVFC was the only organized fire company in Fauquier, and as a result, was called to fight fires from one end of the county to the other. After Warrenton came volunteer fire companies in Remington, Marshall, The Plains, Upperville, Catlett, Goldvein, New Baltimore, and Lois. Vint
Hill Farms Station and the Warrenton Training Center also had fire departments that provided mutual aid. Along with the new companies, new support systems, including communications, were needed. Until the low-band frequency (46.50 mHz) fire radio system was installed in the mid-1960s, emergency calls were initially taken by the local telephone company. “The telephone operator – who was in the old telephone building across Main Street from the firehouse – would set off the siren,” recalled long-time former fireman Rev. J. Richard Winter. “Whoever got to the firehouse first would go to the phone booth in the building and take the call. As other firemen arrived, the units would head to the fire.” The radio system was originally located in the Warren Green building, and dispatched by the Warrenton Police Department; Kitty Kendrick was the first dispatcher. From there, the communications equipment was moved to the Sheriff’s Office in the county jail, where it was operated by county dispatchers.
Golden Anniversary Brings Big Changes By the time of it reached its 50th Anniversary in 1974, the Warrenton Fire Company was running two 500-gallon Aherns-Fox pumpers, a Ford brush truck specially designed to fight field fires, a 750-gallon front-mounted Ford pumper, a 1,000 gallon Pirsch pumper, and a 4,000 gallon tractor-trailer tanker. Its original home in the lower level of the Municipal Building since 1924 had space for only three vehicles, the rest stored in a cinderblock garage on Lee Street, or outside. Training in or near the center of town was also a problem, especially when it involved burning in the old oil pit near the garage on Lee Street. Fire Department Continued on page 18 Warrenton Volunteer Fire Company has greatly expanded and improved the original facility built there. In 2008, a $3.6 million renovation and expansion project was completed.

the Town Council in October 1975, with Frank Griffith, of Warrenton, selected as the architect for the new building. The plan was approved, and construction started soon afterward.
Chief Scott Ross Fire Department Continued from page 16 Aubrey Jenkins was chief in 1971-72, and was succeeded by Sam Tarr, who would serve as chief from 1972-1983. During this time, plans to build a new firehouse that could house all of the company’s equipment were discussed, using 5.5 acres the fire company owned on Shirley Avenue as the site. In 1973, town offices were moved from the old Municipal Building on Main Street to the former Fauquier National Bank building at Court and Hotel streets. Working closely with Mayor J. Willard “Bill” Lineweaver – himself a former active member of the fire company – and the town council, it was decided that the town would sell the old Municipal Building, and contribute the proceeds after expenses to the fire company for the new firehouse. As if to make a point, in May 1975 one of the columns on the front of the Municipal Building collapsed onto Fourth Street. “We were having a party upstairs after completing a fundraiser when we heard a crash,” recalled Mr. Tarr. “The column was made of thin metal and filled with sand, and it just missed hitting the Presbyterian Church property.” The firemen presented their plan to 18
There were a few problems. The basement once flooded, and concrete forms on the upper level unexplainably caught fire one night. But the new facility completed and ready for occupancy by February 1977.
Community and business support has been critical to the growth and success of the fire company from the beginning, and fundraisers like Bingo, breakfasts, the carnival and new car raffle generated hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years. “Often, Annie Kays had the new car paid for before it was won,” noted Mr. Tarr. Others who helped include E. C. Schwab of the Fauquier National Bank and Adrian Thayer.
As planned, the old Municipal Building was sold at auction on May 12, 1978. The winning bidder was Alexandria businessman Scott Humphrey, who paid $78,500; of that amount, the fire company netted $65,000. A significant balance remained, but thanks to the efforts of Fundraising Committee Chairman Ernest M. Oare and Finance Committee Chairman Annie Kays, the fire company managed to pay off the entire cost of the $350,000 project by the end of September 1978. A “thermometer” in front of the building marked the progress of the fundraising; it went over the top.
In 2006-2007, the Warrenton Volunteer Fire Company and the Warrenton Volunteer Rescue Squad were merged. Founded in 1958 and headquartered in the Maximillian A. Tufts Building at the foot of Hospital Hill, the WVRS served the community well, providing rescue service and mutual aid for the WVFC and other county units countless times. A change that had already taken place in Remington, The Plains, Catlett and other areas, the merger was seamless and has resulted in a more efficient and economical organization. Currently, the rescue squad building is undergoing renovation.
All-important fundraising activities, including the carnival, Bingo and pancake breakfasts, were held regularly as the fire company continued to grow. Equipment upgrades were handled through the “truck fund,” a closely watched process where older equipment was replaced based on what fire insurance underwriters dictated. “No piece of equipment over 15 years old was rated by the underwriters,” said Mr. Tarr. “This impacted the fire insurance rates that property owners had to pay.”
A major investment was made in 20072008, with the building of the 99-unit Moffett Manor behind the firehouse. The project provides badly needed moderate-income rental units, while providing income for the fire company.
Due to the high cost of specialized firefighting apparatus, used equipment was sometimes purchased. Mr. Tarr remembers the county’s first ladder truck, an open-cab, plain front unit purchased in the early 1980s from the City of Bristol, Va. This unit was especially useful in fighting barn fires, and after several years it was replaced by a new ladder (or “tower”) truck, and sold as an antique. Other changes included replacing the earlier tractor-trailer tanker with a single-unit tanker with tandem wheels.
As the Warrenton Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company “serves into the future,” there will be more changes, and certainly challenges. But we can sleep well at night, confident that with our support, these men and women, committed to provide emergency services, will be there.

ith the best of intentions the majority of you will choose to venture into malls with major department stores and stroll around aimlessly with sensory overload from the wide selection of gifts available. That’s just the beginning, don’t forget paddling through the crowds, hunting down the last olive green sweater, hailing a sales associate for a correct size, standing in long lines and then that unsure feeling tip-toes in, “What if she doesn’t like this?” While it is the thought that counts, try this one… Old Town Warrenton has shops and boutiques with many gift ideas to please the women in your life. All stores are within walking distance and each have a unique selection of gift ideas including choice fashion items and accessories for any lady. Shopping is tough and shopping for a woman can feel impossible, but at each store there has experienced staff ready to assist you in making the right purchase. Clothing Continued on Page 24

Be Boutique | 75 Main Street | (540)347-1131 Be Boutique is an eclectic boutique that displays a colorful mix of dresses, pants, tops, jackets, and cheerful accessories. From flashy to traditional this boutique has it all. Owner Barbara Ebbets fills her store with items to suit every clothing personality. Ebbets and her skillful staff also use a method to help lost shoppers narrow down their ideal items. Clothing Personalities can be broken down into six categories: classic, natural, dramatic, town and country, romantic, and delicate. With each distinctive from the next classic is considered the largest category with tailored clothing, controlled hairstyle and small to medium sized accessories, think Jackie Onassis or Jennifer Aniston. Natural is very similar to classic but on a smaller scale, tailored, well-put together, small to few accessories, like Laura Bush or Rachel Ray. Dramatic boasts large accessories with surprising combinations, similar to Cher Bono or Lady Gaga. Town and Country prefers natural fibers with hats and boxy jackets like Julia Roberts or Brooke Shields. Romantic is soft, lacey, flowy fabrics and ruffles like Elizabeth Taylor. Delicate is a scaled down version of Romantic focusing on smaller stitches and subtle lace, ruffles, and flowers like Halle Berry or Kelly Ripa. Obviously a diverse place to shop, stop in and let the staff take care of things. Be ready to answer questions or bring a photo, the ladies here will help. Be Boutique will also have a wish list.
Gentleman there are many wonderful store options right in town to choose from. So avoid traffic, sensory overload, non-personal customer service and long lines. Shop local. 28

Fauquier Health New Infusion Center Open at Fauquier Hospital Patients who visit the Fauquier Hospital Infusion Center do so for a wide variety of reasons; chemotherapy, blood transfusions or intensive antibiotic administration are just a few. Many come several times during a month and treatments can range from 30 minutes to eight hours. It’s a tough road for some patients, but Fauquier Hospital recently made the journey a little easier. The hospital’s new 2,065-square-foot infusion center is a breath of fresh air – and light. Located just past the front lobby of the hospital, the new infusion center is bathed in gentle sunlight from windows around its perimeter. Patients appreciate the new bright, open space and are happy that Dr. Syed Salman Ali, medical oncologist/hematologist is just a few steps away. Designed for the convenience of patients, Dr. Ali’s office is a part of the new center, so he is available in case there is a question or concern. Dr. Ali said, “People find the new center to be a pleasing environment. And they seem to like the fact that I can easily walk by and see them as they are getting their infusions and treatments in between visits.” He added, “The new center was designed for a seamless patient experience. The Infusion Center nurses work with me in my practice too, so there is a continuity there that few other facilities can duplicate. My patients see the same nurses every time they come. It is very comforting.” Other nods to comfort include more space between infusion bays and individual television sets at each station. Personal headsets help the time pass.
Dr. Syed Salman Ali, medical oncologist/hematologist, talks with Mary Tharpe, who travels from Rappahannock County to have chemotherapy treatments at Fauquier Hospital’s new Infusion Center.
Lois Sutphin, RN, a longtime Infusion Center nurse, said that the Infusion Center presents an unusual dynamic. “Many of our patients come consistently on the same day and at the same time, so they get to know one another. Each bay has a privacy curtain, but we find that most patients prefer to have them open so they can catch up with one another while they have their procedures.”

Old Town Happenings
OLD TRADITIONS LEAD TO A NEW YEAR By Jennifer Heyns
One of the best aspects of Old Town Warrenton is that it’s just that – old. Having just celebrated the town’s 200th birthday it’s clear to see that the history and heritage of the area are unique, treasured and much celebrated. That’s why traditions like GumDrop Square and Christmas in Old Town are such a welcome part of the holiday season for numerable people. GumDrop Square is several years old in itself, but the nostalgia that it brings to its visitors spans generations. Every year The Partnership for Warrenton Foundation transforms the John Barton Payne Building into a whimsical, childish, Victorian holiday delight. Decorated with confections, tastefully adorned pines and old fashioned fake shop fronts, families travel for miles just to wait in line to enter the doors, take in the scenery and have a visit with Santa Claus.
The GumDrop Square schedule is as follows this year:
Friday, 12/3 6pm Illumination Walk 6:30/7 to 9pm GumDrop Square opens upon Santa’s Arrival 6:30pm to 9pm Live Performances and Non-profit groups on Main Street from Bank Plaza to 5th Street, horse-drawn hay rides Saturday, 12/4 10am Christmas Parade 11am – 2pm GumDrop Square Sunday, 12/5 1pm to 3pm GumDrop Square Friday, 12/10 6pm to 9pm GumDrop Square, live performances and non-profit groups on Main Street from Bank Plaza to 5th Street, horse-drawn hay rides Saturday, 12/11 10am to 2pm GumDrop Square Sunday, 12/12 1pm to 3pm GumDrop Square Friday, 12/17 6:30 to 9:30pm GumDrop Square Saturday, 12/18 10am to 2pm GumDrop Square Sunday 12/19 1pm to 3pm GumDrop Square
32
It truly is something unique and spectacular. And as an added bonus, children can enter Santa’s Secret Shop to purchase presents for all of their loved ones with the help of only elves, since no parents are allowed in the Secret Shop. In fact the holiday season has many more Old Town buildings getting into the spirit. Once you’ve been to GumDrop Square and seen the Big Guy, stroll through Old Town and take in all of the holiday window displays. Several shops and restaurants have already decorated their store fronts for the holidays. Find your favorite and vote for it on The Partnership for Warrenton’s facebook page! Although Santa and GumDrop Square come but once a year, preserving and appreciating the history and heritage of Old Town Warrenton is something that The Partnership for Warrenton Foundation strives to do throughout the year, by hosting and organizing events, coordinating town projects (like the addition of the streetlamps) and supporting the businesses, restaurants and shops in Old Town. We could not accomplish all that we do without the tremendous generosity of so many people and businesses in the area. On behalf of The Partnership for Warrenton Foundation, the Board of Directors and I would like to sincerely thank each and every one of you who have supported our efforts throughout the year with donations of money, goods and services and your valued time. Have a fabulous, fun, festive and safe holiday season.

Fauquier Worships
“...we are a very vibrant, open, and expressive community.” —Dr. Tapscott
“There is a sense of freedom here,” Dr. Decker Tapscott, Pastor of Faith Christian Church and International Outreach Center said, “I’ve never felt the love of God as I have here, rather than any other place of worship.” Faith Christian Church offers Warrenton residents more than a church, but a place to connect into a community that is a Christ-governed, word inspired, mission oriented, full gospel community. There is a family style presence at Faith Christian Church that transcends most places of worship. With 900 active members (350-400 families), the church truly embraces multiculturalism. “When this ministry started we wanted to welcome all cultures and bring everyone together,” Dr. Tapscott, explained. A collection of individuals with varying backgrounds all assemble together for the same contemporary worship service. “We are a new testament church,” Dr. Tapscott said, “we are a very vibrant, open, and expressive community.” Faith Christian Church is a place that enables each person to individually express his or her love and admiration for the Lord. Actions like hugging, dancing, singing, crying, laughing, lifting of hands, and even a subtle action like sitting are all acceptable making this a very real place. Faith Christian Continued on page 44
This is the fourth in a series of articles about local churches and houses of worship. The purpose is to introduce you to the distinct features of each congregation, their philosophy and atmosphere. We believe that churches, temples, synagogues, etc are some of our best community centers. As you read about them each month we hope you will find one that interests you and your family. This month, we take a look at Faith Christian Church.

Dr. Tapscott’s Word of Faith television program can be seen in selected local television outlets. His broadcast can also be seen via the internet on www.youtube.com/ drdeckertapscott. For information about specific television outlets that the Word of Faith is broadcasted, you may call the church office.

While his worship practices might be considered eccentric by some, Dr. Tapscott further explains, “It’s an excitable place. I teach the bible and the word of God. I am not liberal with the actual word, but I am liberal in its delivery.” The fellowship is guided by a strong pastoral leadership that ministers five main goals to the total man and community: • Being Apostolic in reaching the world with the Gospel by training, sending and supporting the body through a mission by establishing churches as the Holy Spirit directs and by parenting those works. • Being Prophetic in abiding as an anointed, revelatory, end-time church in our worship experience in our prayer life and in our “Word” ministry.
• Being Pastoral in loving, caring, tending, and restoring from handson pastoral care from Pastors, Elders, Deacons, and by home cell groups, by the development of a sound counseling ministry, by establishing new believers, by leadership development, thus increasing our pastoral care by youth, women’s, and men’s ministries.
• Teaching by providing biblical, balanced, spiritual, relevant reaching through relevant Sunday morning and Sunday evening teaching, through Discipleship Group efforts, in Foundational Bible Classes and through Christian education for every age. Faith Christian Continued on page 46
• Being Evangelistic in reaching the lost locally with the Gospel through monthly community services.
Actions like hugging, dancing, singing, crying, laughing, lifting of hands, and even a subtle action like sitting are all acceptable making this a very real place. Pictured right, Darrell Deneal of Faith Christian, blows the Shofar horn as a call to worship. 44

Sunday mornings from 10:00 to 10:45, Sunday school classes are offered for all ages.
Faith Christian Continued from page 44
The main goals can be found in an assortment of worship services offered two days a week. A mid week service is offered on Wednesdays starting at 7:30pm. The church offers Sunday School for all ages beginning at 10:00am before regular worship services. The Sunday service begins at 10:50am starting with the Corporate Prayer followed by Morning worship at 11:00am. Unique to Faith Christian is their thought to divide worship services on Sundays to relate their teachings to age appropriate audiences. Children and youth have the option to separate from the regular service to join in a group of their peers for teachings they can more easily connect too. Young adults can hang out in the Teen Center with Youth Pastor Julian Awari who leads the service in a brightly painted room with fun chairs, lava lamps, couches, beanbags, coffee tables, and a youth band. Pastor Awari provides the young adults with a service they can understand and continue to grow with. 46
Along with worship Faith Christian Church provides a number of other groups and activities to stay connected. Connect Groups, Singles Ministry, Iron-Men’s Ministry, Women for Jesus, and Seedlings of Faith, are available for members to join and rejoice. Other events like Family and Friends Days, New Member Reception, Get Connected Family Nights Hallelujah Night, Christmas Eve Service, and New Year’s Eve Celebration are all organized and offered to bring together the people of the congregation and build a stronger relationship. They also have numerous outreach programs helping those within our community as well as internationally. Faith Christian Church and International Outreach Center is located at 6472 Duhollow Road, Warrenton, VA 20187. Fauquier County Master Gardeners Seeking New Volunteers
Master Gardeners in Fauquier County are seeking to add new volunteers to their ranks. We currently have a need for new volunteers in several different areas. We are looking for volunteers to work with established school programs, home owner consultations, horticulture therapy in nursing homes and guest lecturers. New volunteers can serve in several established school programs that focus on planting gardens, plant function, and how plants feed us. They are currently in many of the public schools in the area. We need more volunteers to be able to include these programs in all of the schools in our area that would like to have our programs. Volunteers are also needed to help answer people’s questions on a local help line and at farmer’s markets in the community. Occasionally, there is also a need for volunteers to give a presentation to citizens at different community events on growing flowers, tress, vegetables, and new trends in horticulture. Master Gardener volunteers also visit residents in local nursing homes and provide hands one horticulture activities. Master Gardeners provide many benefits to the volunteers who serve with us. We provide an extensive 50 hour training course to give you background information, a volunteer mentor program, and many opportunities for continued skill development. It is also a chance to get to know people in the community and give back to others. If any of these volunteer opportunities fit with your interests and desires to serve in our community, please contact us to learn more about our upcoming volunteer training.
Virginia Cooperative Extension - Fauquier will conduct a Master Gardener Volunteer Training Course from January through April at the Fauquier Extension Office in Warrenton. The course will be held on Wednesday mornings once per week from 9:00am – 12:30pm, starting January 12th, 2011. The course will be taught by a variety of extension agents and professionals from the horticulture industry. The cost for the program is $125, which includes the Virginia Master Gardener Handbook and many other educational materials. Citizens interested in this educational and volunteer opportunity can get more information, and application forms the Fauquier Extension Office at (540) – 341-7950 ext 214#, or at tohlwile@vt.edu, or by coming by the office at 24 Pelham St. in old town Warrenton. There will be an informational orientation meeting to help answer any questions and give a general idea of what is involved in the training and volunteering.

Toto,
I Don’t Think We’re In Kansas Anymore By Jennifer Heyns
Working full-time away from home isn’t new to me. I worked for years before one day just leaving it all behind me to stay home and have babies. But it’s different now - SO very different. All of my previous jobs required me to work on a computer - as a kitchen designer, a payroll manager, a human resources administrator - but never before have I been launched into a world of full-scale technology. Just the other day I ran into a girlfriend of mine whom I hadn’t seen in months. Apparently she underwent some sort of transformation surgery, I barely recognized her. Seems resistance was futile and assimilation was imminent. I’m not sure what the new cyborg look was all about, but it doesn’t seem to be doing her any good - she’s still hearing voices (and talking back to them, too…in public). There are gadgets and gizmos galore. I feel so twentieth century. Here are the top five ways that you can tell if you’ve been home too long: 1. Your 65-year old boss looks into your thirty-something face as if you are an Interplanet Janet and declares, “You don’t TEXT???” (And I swear what came after the ???’s was an eye roll that can only be outdone by my sons.) 2. At the board meeting you assume the board member across the table from you is doodling on the cover of his three-ring binder. Next month you switch seats so you can see the doodles, too, only to find that his notebook is really an easel/binder for his iPad and he’s really reviewing the meeting’s agenda. 3. You stare into your breakfast bowl. Nothing. What do you expect, it’s just fruit? Then why is everybody else’s apples and blackberries able to send you emails, Tweets and facebook posts? Obviously they don’t shop at the same grocery store. 4. You feel chained to your desk so that you can immediately answer the five dozen emails that plop onto your desktop every ten minutes with efficient zeal, only to realize that everyone else is out and about - it’s their darn breakfast fruit that’s sending these unending messages. (Note to self: try Harris Teeter produce.) 5. You soon realize that while there may indeed be no I in team, if you don’t have an iMac, iPod, iPad, iTouch and iPhone you’re not even in the ballpark, so you might as well go back home.

Addiction is a brain disease expressed as compulsive behavior. It begins with using drugs, including alcohol, voluntarily. It is a preventable disease. Due to a combination of environmental and genetic predisposition, a threshold is crossed. Drug use causes permanent cellular changes. A compulsive craving overwhelms all other motivations. The craving cannot be stopped by sheer will. Relapses are common. Addicts cannot control their compulsive drug craving even when accompanied by negative health and social consequences. Genes do not doom one to be an addict. Individuals differ. With those who have this incurable disease, recovery through psychotherapy is possible.

Snow Continued from page 56 the most brutal I have ever experienced. The snow became knee-high, higher in some cases and the wind never ceased. The only time we could walk any distance was when we were following the path of a tank. While I am not a coffee lover in general, that winter made me a constant drinker of black coffee. The standard order throughout combat years to “dig in” became ridiculous. Where was the ground?
The Snow Queen, published by Hans Christian Andersen in 1845 speaks of the struggle between good and evil. Grimm’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” tells of innocence and true beauty.
Snow in the German Rhineland during that winter presented the most unendurable conditions. The weather was incredibly harsh and, as usual, the infantryman had the hardest lot. Civilians, however, were not immune. Back in Holland families subsisted on tulip bulbs and sugar beets. Approximately 10,000 Dutch died from the snow and cold between September 1944 and the early Spring of 1945.
Like everything else in life, snow is either friend or foe depending on the perception of the observer. The farmer is thankful that the Spring snow is strengthening the source of the water supply while the electric company has to bear the complaints of those living in the dark. Frightened drivers grip the steering wheel tightly and hug the shoulder of the road as ardent skiers head for the mountains. While students cheer when snow days are declared, business owners (except for “bread and milk” stores) ponder over lost sales.
In “The Night Before Christmas” small children read of “the moon on the breast of the new fallen snow” over which Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder and When staying in one foxhole for a significant period of time Blitzen pulled Santa’s sleigh. In my childhood no one had a new problem existed. Water and mud were often ankle deep. ever heard of Rudolph. A more serious poem by Robert Frost, Warnings went out about “trench foot.” This resulted from “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”, speaks of the calm one’s feet being both wet and cold for a significant period of beauty of the woods covered by a white blanket. time. The feet become numb, then later blue. If not treated, Soldiers overseas during World War II constantly asked the they became gangrenous. Upon instructions, we started to Armed Forces Radio to play and re-play “White Christmas” as wear two pairs of socks simultaneously. Some infantrymen they dreamed of the “Christmas they used to know.” Written were treated by medics and sent back to the line; others were by Irving Berlin in 1942, this song as rendered by Bing Crosby driven to a hospital in the rear. is the most popular and famous of all Christmas songs.
Ironically, despite its immense power, snow flakes are created in the most innocuous way. In clouds that are below freezing, molecules of water vapor adhere to particles of dust and become granular ice particles. As they fall, however, they turn into varying shapes depending on the temperature, humidity, and the barometric pressure. Flake upon flake fall and the product of nature gradually becomes the topic of song, poetry, and fairy tale.
Some readers may be looking forward to a mild winter but speaking as someone who for years both endured and loved winters in Syracuse, New York (where the average annual snowfall is over 160 inches), my cry is “Let It Snow; Let It Snow, Let It Snow!!”

Our Obesity Epidemic: It’s Not Just The Children by Kim Forsten Childhood obesity is a fast-growing epidemic that is capturing national media attention and captivating the medical community and, predictably, politicians. A national task force has even been created to identify potential solutions to the problem. Just in case you have not heard, here are some of the facts: • More than 50% of American children do not achieve the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity daily. • Between 15 and 20% of American children are overweight or obese (meaning approximately 10 million American children are developing risk factors for chronic illnesses very early in life. Research tells us this will be the first generation to have a shorter life expectancy than ours!).

McMahon’s Pub & Restaurant A traditional Irish pub for casual or fine dining that offers a place to relax and enjoy entertainment. McMahon’s Irish Pub and Restaurant is a dual Irish family-owned restaurant located on the bypass in a rustic stone and slate roofed building. Francis Fusco and Emmet Gallagher, along with their families, have created an authentic Irish restaurant and pub. McMahon’s takes its guests from Warrenton and transports them to Ireland in one of three separate, charming rooms; each is tastefully decorated generating a welcoming atmosphere. The Killashee Room is an intimate dining& bar area towards the front of the building boasting a beautifully large window that streams in natural light. The Glendalough Room is the largest dining area located in the center of the building, with lots of seating, soft lighting and views of the outdoor patio. French doors lead to Gallagher’s Pub that features a large bar, high top tables, fireplace, flat screen TV’s, Irish beer on tap and live entertainment. Standard in the Pub is their smoking policy, providing one of the only places for people to still smoke indoors. Soon to change, Gallagher’s Pub will have two distinct bars offering something for everyone. The original Pub will become smoke free still but still provide live entertainment, and the Game Room will be another bar option for smokers. In July, McMahaon’s opened the new bar and an outdoor patio. Covered and sectioned-off by an ornate fence, it allows customers to delight in Irish fare while not being confined indoors. Complementing the establishment and décor is the friendly staff. With a strong staff of 20-25, there has been very little turnover, allowing the staff to bond and build strong relationships that are evident at McMahon’s. “We are blessed with a loyal staff that helps make it a great environment to December 2010
work in,” said Gallagher. Currently there are six Irish natives on staff serving up food and drinks with a kind smile and a well-known accent. Seeking Irish employees has been a key to McMahon’s success, adding authenticity to their quality character. The menu is large with dozens of recognizable dishes but many more that maybe unfamiliar. First on the menu is
leeks, garnished with cheddar, bacon and scallions is a great winter delight. Pair your soup with one of McMahon’s salads (try the Chef Jeff) for a perfect lunch. McMahon’s serves several terrific entrees including familiar favorites like Bangers and Mash ($12.95) and Corned Beef and Cabbage ($14.95). The corned beef is slow-roasted and juicy while the
theBoxty, a traditional Irish appetizer with a foundation of a shredded potato pancake that is smothered with a variety of toppings from vegetable to salmon and corned beef ($6.95 to $8.95). Each one is uniquely different because of the variety of meats and sauces. Other appetizers included spring rolls, calamari and spicy chicken wings, all excellent. The soups are delicious. The beef/vegetable soup is robust in both flavor and ingredients. It is so hearty that it could have its own category somewhere between soup and stew. McMahon’s traditional Cobbler Soup with potatoes and
cabbage bed is fresh. Sweet peas and Gaelic Champ (mashed potatoes) are included but the best part might be the homemade horseradish cream sauce. The Gaelic Steakis a ribeye that has been marinated a few days topped with crispy leeks and served with seasonal vegetables and Gaelic champ ($20.95). One of the most beautiful dishes on the menu is the very tasty Thatched Cottage Pie, a fresh, homemade puff pastry filled with carrots, sweet peas, Gaelic champ and tender pieces of chicken in McMahon’s Continued on page 64 63
McMahon’s Continued from page 63 a creamy herb sauce. There are dinner specials including choice Angus prime rib on the weekends. McMahon’s serves a divine bread pudding that is not too sweet or gooey. It comes out warm with traditional Irish currants and topped with an Irish Whiskey sauce ($5.95). Another dessert to note is the Mango Crumble - mangos, brown sugar and cinnamon topped with graham crackers, oatmeal and vanilla ice cream. Of course, the selection of the bar was assessed. Rest assured, McMahon’s friendly bartenders and wait staff will properly serve you Guinness, Smithwicks or Harp beer as well as offering a very solid wine selection. The bars have a great variety of other spirits including many top shelf brands. Take a look at their entertainment calendar. There is always something going on from Celtic music to trivia to rock bands. McMahon’s has parking on the premises and the area’s only valet parking on Friday and Saturday nights. Reservations are recommended on the weekends and for groups or private parties. One final note: Santa Claus will be visiting McMahon’s on Sunday, December 19th for a brunch special event from 11am to 3 pm. Call ahead for reservations and bring the entire family.

What’s New
Warrenton
Here we are in the last month of another year, the busiest time of year for many families and hopefully just as many businesses. Let’s remember to support our local businesses as we go about our shopping and preparation for the holidays, it helps our entire community when we do. We have three businesses that have opened recently. Keller Williams Realty has opened an office on Lee Street and is ready to provide you their support and extensive resources when you are ready to buy or sell your house. While you are making your plans to visit friends and family for the holidays, don’t forget about your pets. If they can’t travel with you, call Debbie Lott at Pawsitive Pet Services to help you out, she will make sure your best friend is well taken care of while you are gone. She can also help with other vacation needs, such as mail and newspaper pick up. We all want to make sure that we can stay in touch while on the road (or just need to check which size to get while we are in the store), so why not stop into the new Sprint store across from the LongHorn Steak House and see all the new phones they have to offer. Maybe you know someone that would like a new phone as a gift. And, one of the largest changes has been the sale of Rick Hunt Ford to Sheehy Auto Stores. Mr. Hunt has owned the dealership
for nearly thirty years and is now ready to move onto something new. The dealership will now be known has Sheehy Ford and the Sheehy organization has a reputation for some of the best car prices around. There are some new faces, but many of the faces are still the same and one of the advantages of being part of a larger organization is that they have access to a much larger inventory of vehicles then what you see on the lot. They can quickly and easily get any of their large inventory to Warrenton and they are ready to help you with your next new or used car purchase. Just one last note, if you need a wonderful and yummy gift for someone far away, remember that the Red Truck Bakery is accepting orders for items to be shipped anywhere in the country until December 11th. Check out their website at RedTruckBakery. com. For some of the best cookies in the county, don’t forget the annual fund raising cookie sale at the Senior Center starts on December 9th. And for other yummy items, don’t forget the Buckland Farm Market. You are sure to find something for those with even the most finicky taste. Remember we have a lot of wonderful businesses that can provide you with unique gifts for everyone. Have a wonderful holiday and enjoy the time with family and friends, the best gift of all.
Amy Griffin is the owner of inFauquier.com, a comprehensive online directory of consumer businesses located in Fauquier County. Maps to all the businesses can be found at inFauquier.com and check out the What’s New page for more business happenings in the entire county. You can reach her at (540)347-4922 or amy@inFauquier.com with your questions or any tidbits you hear about local business.

With so many magnificent colors exploding this fall, photographers from all levels were out snapping up images to be remembered. We always welcome readers to send in photos from our beautiful county, and when room permits, we will publish them. 70
Warrenton Lifestyle
—The Tyen Tackett Story—
Minutes to live. Seconds to act. A lifetime to enjoy. “There was vomit on the bed, and Tyen was turning blue.” That’s how Vickie Tackett described the scene when she went in to check on her napping son. She immediately called 911, and an emergency crew rushed him to Fauquier Hospital. When they arrived, a medical team was standing by to take action. The entire staff was focused on Tyen. Except for one nurse, who realized Vickie needed a little help as well. “She came up and gave me a hug,” Vickie recalls. “It meant the world to me.” Images revealed that a bolt from Tyen’s bed was lodged in his airway. And, with steady hands, a doctor used a pair of forceps to pull the object out. “You could hear everyone in the room cheering,” Vickie remembers with a smile. Today, the loud sounds you hear coming from the Tackett house are that of a young boy playing cars, reading books and, well, just being a kid. To learn more about Tyen’s story visit www.FHstories.com. The Emergency Department at Fauquier Hospital
