Women’s Well-being

Today’s Empowered Woman

Claiming Your Voice

by Michelle Kelley

True empowerment for a woman comes from knowing how you feel and then being able to communicate your needs and feelings appropriately in your relationships. An empowered woman knows when to say ‘no’ and where to draw the line in her various relationships. She can recognize her own needs and ask for help when necessary.

Today’s empowered woman knows what she deserves -- and knows how to command -- respect in all relationships. She does not define herself only by her accomplishments in the world (Olympic gold medalist, Secretary of State, Company President or Chairwoman, etc.), no matter how amazing her accomplishments. Today’s empowered woman:

● Listens to and honors her inner voice, and uses her outer voice to express herself positively in all of her relationships.

● Recognizes her strengths and embraces her weaknesses.

● Does not tolerate disrespectful

or contemptuous behavior in her relationships because she values her time and energy.

● Avoids emotionally draining relationships and negativity.

● Understands that the choices she has made in the past have created her current situation and knows that she is able to create a different future for herself.

● Believes she deserves and is

capable of achieving success in life, as she defines success for herself.

Very little has been written on the topics of empowered women and healthy relationships outside the world of business and the workforce.

The 1940s version of an empowered woman focused on her physical accomplishments more than her emotional well-being and or the health of her personal relationships. The iconic Rosie the Riveter poster spoke to women’s changing role in the workplace, where they were rising to the challenges of performing traditional “men’s work.” In the 1960s, Betty Friedan spearheaded the feminist movement, prompting more and more women to question their traditional roles as homemaker and mother, and seek more fulfilling educational and career opportunities. In the 1990s, Hillary Clinton introduced the possibility that a woman could, indeed, be elected President of the United States. Today’s empowered woman wants to express herself more fully and authentically in all her relationships -- with her husband, children, parents, siblings, romantic partners, friends, and colleagues in the workplace. Many women I have counseled in my private practice have confided in me that they feel their situation or relationship is hopeless, or that their husband or another key person in their lives won’t listen. Many of my clients have chosen to silence their voice, out of a feeling of hopelessness or despair. The client may feel overpowered, threatened or invalidated in her key relationships. claiming your voice continued on page 10

T’was the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring not even a mouse; It was then I glanced there by the tree, Showers, toilets, faucets - I smiled with glee! There was a water heater, a Jacuzzi tub and fancy sinks galore. It was then that I saw him standing by the door. He sprang to his sleigh; to his team he gave a whistle! And away they flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight, Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night! (ok, so the kids weren’t so happy but Mom sure was!)

claiming your voice continued from page 8

A woman who has not learned how to communicate her wants and needs effectively in her relationships is likely to feel stuck, hopeless and despairing. Communication is oxygen in a relationship. Without it, the relationship will die. Many girls and women struggle to break free of their “people pleaser” personality. Women who are “people pleasers” often choose not to voice their thoughts and opinions out of fear of not being liked or fear of confrontation. I recall my own silence as an adolescent female and the pain it caused me. When girls lose their connection to their voice, and the ability to express their wants and needs, their feeling of personal empowerment suffers. Perhaps you can remember an instance when your voice was not validated or heard. How did that make you feel? What effect did that have on your confidence?

When a girl’s or woman’s thoughts and opinions are not validated, she will eventually experience a disconnection between her inner voice and her inner truth, and the messages she communicates to others. She may begin to shut down emotionally. She may end up traveling down the road of selfmedication, drugs, abusive relationships and emotional problems. A girl or woman who has been silenced has suffered an assault on her spirit. How to Honor and Claim Your Voice: 1. Create a list of your strengths. Own them. Be proud of them. Don’t wait for others to validate your strengths. Validate yourself. 2. Do you have a voice in decision making? You have a right to be a part of this process. You have to give yourself permission first. 3. Revisit (reflect upon) a hurtful statement that was made to you. How would you use your voice now? What would you say differently? 4. Take care of yourself (emotionally as well as physically). Too often women put themselves last in this area. I can truly understand the phrase, “If I only knew then what I know now.” But there is no way that I could have known then what I know now. I had to live through my experiences and deal with the consequences. Only then was I able to move forward. Through education, guidance and support I help women to create positive change in themselves first and their relationships second. I have traveled the road

of personal disempowerment, and I know the obstacles women encounter along that road. Women need to be conscious about the choices they are making in friendships, romance and life. “We are not flowers in a field. We are supposed to be active participants in all areas of our lives.” It is necessary to start asking for change, for respect, to be heard and to be validated. I often share my experiences and lessons learned in hope that some may avoid the seemingly lengthy amount of time it can take to learn how to make good choices. A girl in one of my “Heathy Relationships” classes told me that she didn’t realize that she could play her part differently. In other words she didn’t have to put up with any type of mistreatment or bullying. I gave her permission and the tools she needed to stand up for herself. Women can and should do the same. I recently read a quote by Meg Ryan which stated, “If you empower women, you can change the world.” Women are often the ones who have been assigned the role of emotional caretaker in families. The self-help industry is largely geared towards women and so women may be leading the way and that is okay. It really doesn’t matter who leads as long as we are heading in the right direction. Culturally, we have given men the message that their work and career should come first in their lives. This is slowly changing. Many women are beginning to initiate positive change in their relationships. Ultimately the positive effects will reach men, families and society. Let the change begin 2012 is not the end of the world as we are in a time of great change in our personal relationships.

History here

Warrenton selected as home of Lincoln-Washington Museum by John Toler

For a variety of reasons, including the Civil War Sesquicentennial, a major motion picture release, and revealing new research, there has been a renewed interest in President Abraham Lincoln. But as unlikely as it seems, Warrenton – with its deep Southern roots– can now boast as having one of the finest repositories of paintings, sculptures and other memorabilia related to President Lincoln to be found anywhere in the United States. The extensive museum collection of Mr. Bob Lang now resides in the 19th century storefront at 45 Main Street, which most recently was used as a Subway restaurant. Inside the totally remodeled building, one finds a fascinating array of Americana dating from a portrait of the vote on the landmark Compromise of 1850– when the seeds of secession were sown – and leads one through the war and the Lincoln presidency. Mr. Lang, who hails from Delafield, Wisconsin and also has a home in Washington, D.C., has been adding to his collection for 25 years. He is also the founder of the Lincoln-Washington Society, for which the museum in Warrenton is named. Years ago, he became acquainted with fellow collector and Fauquier County native Don Tharpe, who is also the founder of the Liberty Heritage Society and owner of the Liberty Heritage Society Museum at 26 Main Street. It was through this vital connection with a kindred spirit that brought Mr. Lang to Warrenton. In addition to its proximity to Washington, D.C., Mr. Lang “found Warrenton, with its architecture, history and charm to be the ideal location to house his museum

12

collection,” according to Mr. Tharpe. In addition to the floor space, the museum has over 240 linear feet of wall space, which has been filling up with fine art since work setting up the museum began a couple of months ago. Every piece of art in the museum is original, and every item tells a story. Although not yet open to the public, Mr. Lang hosted a meeting for the Board of Directors of the Brandy Station Battlefield Association there in November – an appropriate setting, since one of the collection’s larger paintings depicts the 1st Maine Cavalry in the epic battle that took place there. For many years, Mr. Lang has shared his collection with a number of institutions, and now from his base in Warrenton, he will continue to offer limited exhibitions around the country. Most recently, he and Mr. Tharpe attended the Lincoln Forum in Gettysburg, Pa., opening an exhibit and meeting with motion picture producer Steven Spielberg, just as Spielberg’s new movie, Lincoln, was being released nationwide. Another exhibit is planned for a location in Georgetown in February. Among Mr. Lang’s most prized items is the portrait of President Lincoln in his office when he signed the Proclamation for Emancipation on Sept. 1862. “It is proclaimed to be the finest portrait of Abraham Lincoln ever done,” according to Mr. Tharpe. Currently under restoration, it should available for exhibit in the museum by the end of the year. Another unique piece is a wooden table that was present in the McLean house in Appomattox, Va., on April 9, 1865, at the time of Gen. Robert E. Lee’s

On exhibit at the Lincoln-Washington Museum on Main Street, Warrenton, are many exquisite Lincoln portraits and statuary, including this painting by Franklin C. Courter (1845-1947), and bust by Louis Mayer (1869-1969). Other paintings depict epic Civil War battles and portraits of major Union and Confederate leaders.

surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. It was originally purchased from the McLean family “as a souvenir” by Gen. George Armstrong Custer. “We will have other artifacts from Appomattox as well,” notes Mr. Tharpe. The museum opened to the public on Nov. 30, and will be open again on Saturday, Dec. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Regular scheduled days and hours will be announced later. “The Lincoln-Washington Museum should become a major stop on the Journey Through Hallowed Ground,” noted Mr. Tharpe Over the next two years, exhibits will be focused on Pres. Lincoln, and will change as new items are added or taken out on loan. After that, a new exhibit will be set up, with the focus on President George Washington, another of Mr. Lang’s primary interests. Adventurer Photographer:

Sunny Reynolds by George Rowand

Sunny Reynolds is out there. The former member of the Warrenton Town Council and perpetual community volunteer is well know for being vocal in her opinions. She knows that turns some people off. “Either people really like me or they don’t,” she said. “I’m pretty outspoken. I pretty much know [for myself] what’s right and wrong, but I have a huge respect for other people’s opinions.” But like her or not, nobody can say that she is looking out only for number one. It’s not the way that she was raised. “We were very poor growing up,” she stated. “We had zip, and there were five of us. We raised pretty much everything we ate, but my mother would take people off the street and feed them. We were always having strange people at our dinner table. And when I was in the Girl Scouts, we would deliver baskets of food to poor people. My mother was always helping other people, and you learn from that. Though we had nothing, we always had more than somebody else.” That attitude has carried over into her current business life. “I want to help somebody else, and I believe that it will come back to you if you help somebody else,” Sunny said as she described her reasoning for joining the Greater Warrenton Chamber of Commerce. The Entrepreneur Reynolds grew up about 20 miles north of Syracuse, New York and matriculated at Syracuse University, ending up with degrees A camel-driver in India 14

in theater arts and English. She had married by then and had a daughter. “I was working full time in the finance world, going to school at night, married and with a child, and when my husband – who was a pilot – got transferred to Dulles, we came to Virginia, and I got a job in the financial field in Fairfax.” Over time, Reynolds discovered that while the pay was good, she yearned for something more creative. “I took a lot of electives in photography classes at Syracuse, and Syracuse had a program where they trained the photography department of the Navy,” Reynolds explained. “They had a full lab, and my husband was the one who put a Nikon in my hand. I was shooting like crazy, and he would take the film and develop it at the lab, and that’s how I got into photography.” At first, photography was just a reprieve from the world of finance, but over time, it became something bigger. “I was doing photography just for fun,” she

said, “and the company where I worked had an attorney, and he hired me to take pictures of his kids. Then he moved to a larger office, and he hired me to do photos for his office. He said, ‘My God, you are so good! You need to do this full time!’ I guess he was the one that pushed me into going into photography. He just loved my work, and that was very encouraging. And one day I quit my job and opened my photography business.” She said that she quickly discovered that the only way to make money in the photography business was to do one of two things: shoot weddings or do commercial photography. “I got really bored doing weddings, so I went into corporate advertising, and I learned right away that you don’t walk into IBM in Manassas and say, ‘I’m a photographer. Hire me!’ If you’re good and want to do the high end stuff, you have to go to their ad agencies, and they’re all in New York. I had a really good friend who ran a top-notch agency in New York, and he helped me put together a portfolio.” Reynolds said that she ran into the same question that anybody starting something

new faces: “What have you done before?” “These ad agencies want to see what you’ve already done, so when you haven’t done anything, it’s hard,” she stated. “It’s the most intimidating thing in the world to walk into a very upscale office with maybe two or three head marketing people from these ad agencies and show them your portfolio. I would say it’s like standing up in front of these people, taking your clothes off and saying, ‘What do you think?’ That’s how it makes you feel. I’ve always had a pretty good ego, and I had had people backing me up, but you’re not really good until you get your first really big job.” True to form, Reynolds got some big jobs. “I was very good at what they would call a ‘generalist’ photographer. Instead of being a fashion photographer or a food photographer, I could do everything, and that turned out to be a great advantage for me because they would send me on jobs outside the U.S. Back then they were doing these huge annual reports, and they always had to cover their foreign divisions, so they don’t want to send someone down there to do product shots and someone else to do people shots, and I could do the whole

damn thing, so I got a lot of work that way.” Coincidence played a part in her next venture. “The one trip that was the most important was when I went to Costa Rica to photograph an IBM plant outside of Santa Fe, Costa Rica,” she explained. “I was from upstate New York. I never saw the ocean until I was 28 years old, and I loved Costa Rica.” Never shy about expressing herself, Reynolds said that over time, people would ask her about going to Costa Rica. Like any good business person, she saw an opportunity. “People started coming to me and saying, ‘I’ve always wanted to go to Costa Rica. Can you tell me where should I go? What should I see? Where should I stay?’ So I was thinking, ‘This is really interesting.’ I’m a relatively enterprising person, and I was thinking, ‘Why am I giving out all this free information?’” Her next company, Biotrek Adventure Travel, was born. The business grew December 2012

quickly, and then customers started asking for different itineraries. “I knew that I couldn’t send people to a country and promote that country unless I had seen it myself,” she stated. “I didn’t know anything about the hotels in Chile, so with a friend of mine who was an attorney here in Warrenton, we went to Chile, drove the whole country, looked at hotels went to national parks … we went everywhere, and as I went, I interviewed people, took names of hotels, names of the managers, met up with guides, plus I interviewed ground operators, which is the key to any success in a foreign country.” Reynolds said that she was doing three trips a year to Costa Rica and tours to Chile, when she was asked to go on a trip to the Galapagos Islands. When added to her list of countries to visit, it quickly became a top seller. “The Galapagos has been my most successful tour,” she said. “Last June was my 26th visit to the Galapagos. I’ve taken approximately 375 people there … a lot of local people, but a lot from California as well. The Los Angeles Times published a

little story that someone who went with me wrote. It couldn’t have been more than two paragraphs, and that story got picked up, and to this day, it has been my best out-ofthe-area advertising.” Biotrek regularly has tours to 11 countries in addition to Chile and the Galapagos. “Every country I do is kind of different,” Reynolds stated. “We do India and Bhutan. We started going to Bhutan because it was totally undiscovered, and it had just opened up. The Himalayas are as beautiful there as in Tibet, and there’s nobody there. It’s fabulous! We do northern India. We go to see the Bengal tiger in the wild. They’ve been hunted almost to extinction. We go in early morning in a jeep. The park is divided into areas and you get a number, and say, you get number 1, so you can only go into that area. So far, I have seen two Bengal tigers.” Reynolds said that she has changed the way she does her trips from the early days. “When I started out, I drove myself or I took somebody from here to drive, and I sunny continued on page 18 17

rented my own Toyota 15-passenger van,” she said. One time, we had a flat tire in Costa Rica, so we all rode the coffee workers’ bus into town, and people loved it! And that’s the kind of people that go with me. You take a bad situation and you make it work for you.” She then ticked off some attributes from countries she has visited that she thought people might find interesting. “Nicaragua is undiscovered. Great people, and they have something that Costa Rica doesn’t … Grenada and Leon, two colonial cities which are drop dead gorgeous. We’ve done two or three trips to Nicaragua. I’m absolutely fascinated with Morocco … what a culture! They’re very pro-American, very friendly. I drove that whole country with another woman in a jeep, with every piece of camera equipment I own in that jeep and never was I threatened or nervous. We’re offering Cuba. I’ve been there. Obviously we won’t take people there unless we can do it legally. I’d love to add Turkey. I’ve been everywhere in Turkey, and I like Turkey very, very much. “What keeps me in this business is showing people these places because there’s a great

satisfaction for me when I show somebody a new destination, and if I have one unhappy person, it just kills me.” The Volunteer Currently a board member of the Greater Warrenton Chamber of Commerce, Reynolds has been involved with a long list of organizations in the area, many focusing on the local art scene that she thinks is under appreciated. “I used to be in a lot more things than I am now, but I’ve learned that I can’t do it all,” she said. “My biggest volunteer thing was working for the disaster team for the American Red Cross. I was a disaster volunteer for 6 weeks in Katrina in Mississippi, and that experience changed my life. It was amazingly difficult. I was a shelter manager for 150 people and one week I went out and delivered two meals a day to people. Now, I want to do some international disaster work, so I’m taking some of their media classes. Media people are the first people to go to disasters.” Most observers would look at the life that Sunny Reynolds has led and conclude that it’s been pretty well lived. Yet she admits to one regret.

“One regret? That I never got into photojournalism. Of course, I’d probably be dead because I’d be over in Syria. I’d be in Egypt. I’d be wherever people were stirring things up,” she admitted with her characteristically boisterous laugh. Yet she clearly is happy with how her life has turned out. “I love what I do. People say, ‘Twenty-six times to the Galapagos, isn’t it boring?’ You know, it really isn’t. I think if it gets boring, I’m quitting.” Hylton Performing Arts Center will host Sunny Reynolds work beginning December 2, 2012 through January 26, 2013 at the Buchanan Partners Arts Gallery Gallery Talk with Sunny Reynolds on December 14, 2012 at 6:00pm at the Buchanan Partners Arts Gallery.

What’s Up with Windows 8?

In October, Microsoft released its latest operating system. Windows 8. The big question consumers have, is it worth upgrading or buying? From what I can see so far, Windows 8 is just a revamped Windows 7, but with a new look and touch. Windows 8 envisions the future and accommodates the way we use computers today. I am not just talking about desktops and notebooks. Think of all of those smart phones, tablets, touch screens, televisions, and more! Dependency on distinct desktops and notebooks is on the way out. Consumers are moving toward the convenience of tablets and other touch screen devices. Microsoft envisions that in the future, we will be using touch screen devices to control our environment and to get all of the information we need for our daily lives, such as the next appointment, weather forecasts, driving directions, e-mails, tv shows... the list is endless. This information will not be stored on the device, but up- and downloaded from the Cloud. This enables you to switch effortlessly between devices. You might use your touch screen tablet at home, your smartphone on the way to work, and a touch screen device with connected keyboard and mouse at work. It might not be long before you see a touchscreen integrated into the dining table at a restaurant. Touch screens everywhere! This seems to be Microsoft’s goal with Windows 8. A uniform operating system for all of your devices is useful. Once you log into your account, you see the same information on any device, the same e-mails, documents, social networking posts, etc. And because you get your information from the Cloud via the Internet, your device does not have to be very powerful or have a lot of data storage built in. It just needs fast access to the Internet. What I find fascinating are devices that are tablets that can morph into other forms (some even with an i5 powerful processor). They are easy to carry around, but in a second they snap onto a keyboard or a frame, and voila, act like a notebook. Awesome. However, the prices for these nifty devices are still pretty steep. The touch screen has replaced the keyboard as the norm for devices; speech is the next frontier. This reminds me of a scene from a Star Trek movie, where Scotty is back in our time trying 22

to talk to a computer. When nothing happens, Bones hands him the mouse and he talks into it. Nothing. Finally, he is told to use the mouse and keyboard. Windows 8, with its new “start screen,” hopes to conquer new worlds! On the start screen, colorful “live tiles” gaze back at you. Some of them show fragments of newly received e-mails or messages. You might see the news, the weather, or your calendar, like multiple television screens bombarding you with all the things you want to know. Or not. A tap onto a “live tile” will open up the corresponding “App.” The “live tiles” can be rearranged and regrouped. You can add new ones, but to do so, you have to tap on the “store” tile to download them from Microsoft. As with the Apple store, Apps have to be approved and fulfill certain criteria before they can be added to the Microsoft store. Some Apps are free. Others cost up to $999. This opens up a new universe of products for sale. Windows 8 comes in different levels. Windows RT comes preinstalled on devices like tablets and phones. It is designed for long battery life and it has only a limited desktop version. Windows 8 is aimed at PC consumers and includes the start windows 8 continued on page 24 Warrenton Lifestyle

screen, apps, and a full-featured Windows desktop that can run most Windows 7 programs. Windows 8 Pro is aimed at the small business market. Like Windows 7 Professional, it adds extra networking tools, encryption (previously offered with Windows 7 Ultimate), and more. There is a Windows 8 Enterprise edition for large businesses. But it seems that in order to play DVDs and record TV shows through a TV tuner, you need to buy the Media Center Pack. Until the end of January, this feature is free. But if you don’t have Windows 8 Pro, you need to first buy a Windows 8 Pro upgrade pack as well. Overall, I think that people will get used to the new interface style, and use it effortlessly and efficiently. Entering text is still somewhat annoying, but hopefully, good and fast voice recognition will conquer that world. A propos entering text. I like the new feature where you can authenticate yourself by touching certain areas in a certain picture in a certain order instead of entering a password. The only thing that I didn’t like was that for many Apps, you are required to log in to a Microsoft account. It is definitely gearing you towards preferred services such as MSN mail, Google, and XBOX. “How compatible will my programs be with Windows 8?” Only time will tell. When using the desktop interface, most Windows 7 compatible programs should work in Windows 8, too. But whenever you’re upgrading to a new operating system, it is wise to check out the program manufacturer’s website for details, updates, etc. Sometimes you need to buy the newest version (after all, they want to make money, too). “And what if I don’t like Windows 8?” If you don’t like the touch mode, you can switch over to the “desktop” App, which looks

much like Windows 7, and allows you to use your familiar mouse and keyboard. If you don’t like the feel of Windows 8 altogether, there is a way to deal with that, too. You can turn off the start screen, and the system will fall back to something that operates more like Windows 7. If you bought Windows 8 Pro preinstalled, you are allowed to downgrade the system to a clean Windows 7 Pro install without having to buy another license. But there are downsides, should you later decide to upgrade to Windows 8. It will take a while before Windows 7 computers leave the market. So for now, you have a choice. If you buy a Windows 7 computer before the end of January 2013, you may apply for a free or low-cost upgrade package to Windows 8 Pro. If you wish, you may wait to install at a later date. At the moment, incredibly low-priced entry level Windows 8 computers are hitting the market. These are hard to resist! Windows 8 seems to run fine, even on slower models. But to learn all the tricks, you might need some introductory classes and a tutorial video or book. Microsoft is definitely pushing this Windows version. It looks like Microsoft Office 2013 will not run on Windows XP or even Vista, anymore. For us “oldtimers,” resistance is futile. You can wait it out hoping the next windows version is different, or bite the bullet and upgrade. Whether you like the new look or not, we will all have to adjust to it sooner or later. Ready for an adventure? Try Windows 8! Sync up your devices, play with the possibilities, and venture into new frontiers. Check out www.dokklaus.com for free introductory classes.

Fauquier Health Rotator Cuff Surgery Can Be Best Solution to Shoulder Pain Shoulders can be troublesome. They’re our most flexible joint, which means they’re also our most unstable joint. From little strains to serious dislocations, shoulder injuries are common. Rotator cuff tears alone affect nearly two million people every year in the United States. Orthopedic surgeon Ralph Garretson, M.D., explains that the rotator cuff is made up of the four tendons in the shoulder, which help hold the ball of the upper arm bone securely in the shoulder socket, and provide a fulcrum for overhead use of the arm. Dr. Garretson said, “Causes of a rotator cuff injury may include falling, lifting and over-thehead arm activities —like throwing a baseball, lifting weights or placing items on high shelves. The most common symptom of rotator cuff injury is pain. If you have shoulder pain while reaching up to wash your hair, bending your arm back while getting dressed or trying to carry something heavy, you may have an injury to your rotator cuff. Lying on the injured shoulder also can be painful.” If you have a rotator cuff injury, Sometimes, said Dr. Garretson, physical therapy can be an effective treatment for a rotator cuff injury. Physical therapy may take from several weeks to several months, depending on the minimally invasive surgery can get you injury. Other rotator cuff injury treatments can include steroid injections or surgery. back in the game. Dr. Garretson said that if you have a tear in your rotator cuff, you may need surgery to repair the tear. (Sometimes during this kind of surgery doctors also may remove a bone spur or calcium deposits.) Dr. Garretson repairs rotator cuff injuries using minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery. This technique requires a few tiny incisions, through which a small camera is inserted. The tear in the rotator cuff is repaired using instruments inserted through the same incisions. Because there is very little damage to the muscle in and around the shoulder, recovery time is shorter than with traditional surgery. Marshall Doeller, of Marshall, had rotator cuff surgery about a year ago, and says he is “good as new.” He had sustained a small tear in the rotator cuff, then fell and did some serious damage. “Dr. Garretson said it was the second-worst case he’d ever seen. I couldn’t throw a baseball, couldn’t bale hay, couldn’t play golf. I wasn’t able to lift my arm above my shoulder and couldn’t lift anything over 5 pounds. Now I have full use of the arm, and can do anything I could do before. The surgery was a complete homerun!” Dr. Garretson said, “Arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery has a very high success rate, with a very low incidence of complications. Depending on the size of the tear and the age of the patient, the success rate is as high as 95 percent.”

Fauquier Health CEO Wins Distinguished Service Award Rodger Baker, president and CEO of Fauquier Health, received the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association’s Distinguished Service Award at the VHHA’s annual meeting on November 8. The VHHA’s Distinguished Service Award is given to health system leaders who have made “exemplary contributions to the hospital and health system community through leadership, management, education, research or service.” Rodger Baker has led Fauquier’s health system for more than 35 years, taking it from a small community hospital to a 97-bed, state-of-the-art facility with a 33-bed emergency department, a nursing home/rehabilitation facility, assisted living facility, wound healing center and wellness center. Most significantly, Fauquier Hospital was named a Planetree-Designated Hospital in 2007. Planetree hospitals undergo a rigorous multi-year screening process demonstrating their commitment to patient-centered care. Back to Basics

The Nature of Mineral Oil

Mineral Oil can be found on any baby care or skin care shelf in most large chain drug or grocery stores. It was a staple product for my family as we had one child after the other, until I got to my third little one and we could not get his skin to be healthy. We struggled with eczema on this little one for two long years until I finally started to research what could be causing so much harm and frustration. What we found was alarming, but hope came in finding that by avoiding this skin allergy was as simple as avoiding exactly what was causing the damage - mineral oil.

The use of petroleum products in our skin care is nothing more than a cheap way to get a product on the shelf that will last longer than something that is plant based. Think about it. When is the last time your plastic toys “went bad?” Petroleum products range from anything made out of plastic to liquid petrolatum, or mineral oil. To give you an idea of what petroleum products actually are, we have to go back and give a little scientific background. Petroleum products come from petroleum production. When crude oil is taken out of the ground, it is a thick, black, sticky substance that really isn’t usable for too much. This black liquid is actually a mixture of hydrocarbons. As prehistoric plants and animals

break down, they form these hydrocarbons in several different length chains and structures that can be used for different things. So, it needs to be processed. It’s trucked to oil refineries where it is heated to over 1,000 degrees. This process is called fractional distillation, where they can all be untangled and broken down into more useable forms of hydrocarbons. Since they all have different boiling points, this begins to separate the crude oil into useable vapors (gases) and oils (petroleum products). What we use as gasoline to power our cars is separated from the top. Then it goes to kerosene, then diesel and at the bottom there is all of the junk left.

This “stuff” left in the distillation tank that isn’t really useable, but cannot be put back into the ground because it’s toxic to the environment. So, they have figured out a way to use everything that was left in the tanks. This includes mineral oil, petroleum jelly, and paraffin wax which actually clings to the inside of the stills. Some of it is made into plastics, but the leftovers were engineered to be used in skin care products. So now you have a product that not only can be useable, but you can sell it and make a profit off your very own garbage. This is not the end for mineral oils, however. They now have to

be refined into usable, or relatively safe oils. They go through several different solvents to then become useful in health and beauty products.

For over a hundred years, we have been told that petrolatum products are safe on the skin. However, now we are seeing the detrimental effects of using these products on our bodies. By understanding the basics behind it, you can see why it’s not great for skin. Mineral oil is actually liquid paraffin. When you use mineral oil, you actually put a layer of plastic wrap on your skin. Your skin can no longer do what it was designed to do, and that is to freely push toxins out of your body and pull moisture and nutrition into your body. Yes, it will hold moisture in, but only by blocking your skins ability to work properly. Mineral oil has been linked to a list of health issues like acute bronchitis, cancer, eczema, psoriasis, acne, rashes, patchy dry skin, scaly patches, clogged pores, enlarged pores, thickened skin and now they have discovered huge links between the use of mineral oil and rheumatoid arthritis. All of those disorders are on the surface of your skin, so what about underneath it? According to recent breast cancer research, petroleum derived products, including mineral oil,

are considered petrochemical pollutants. They are known as xenohormones (foreign hormones) and have numerous negative hormonal effects on your body by blocking the actions of your very own oestrogen. The end results are loss of ovarian follicles in women and decreased progesterone production. Decreased progesterone production is oestrogen dominance, PMS, endometriosis, miscarriages and many other types of ovarian dysfunction. Studies have also shown that petrochemical pollutants like mineral oil and petroleum jelly have cause widespread damage to our immune systems, especially to women and children who have been chronically exposed to these xenohormones. There is more research being done about the use of petroleum products on our bodies all the time. Avoiding them, for our family, has brought beautiful, healthy skin, to my little one for over 7 years now, and he is able to live a normal life and never give a second thought to his rough beginnings. By using all natural plant based oils, we have found a happy solution with no side effects. Who knew that you could simply trade out one ingredient for something that you can find in your kitchen cabinet and be happy and healthy and glowing?

Foods to feel good

Coconut Fuel from the tropics by Debra Meszaros CSN

Nothing is more relaxing than a white sandy beach in the tropics, blue water, and the sweet aroma of coconut oil; but did you know that coconut oil is more than just a delight for the senses? It’s a powerful source of energy and nutrition too! The nutrients called “fatty acids” may not sound too appealing but the medium-chain triglycerides (MCT’s) in coconut oil actually help the body fuel itself for endurance, aid the immune system, are antiviral and antibacterial among many other benefits. So how can we incorporate this tropical wonder into our diet in a simple, effective way? A good quality organic extra virgin, cold-pressed or expeller pressed, coconut oil will taste great right off your spoon, but not everyone appreciates the oily texture. If texture doesn’t bother you, off the spoon might be easiest for you. Blending coconut oil and butter together actually add great flavor to anything you might toast in the morning. Coconut oil is also an excellent choice for cooking especially sautéing or grilling. Making a fruit smoothie? Adding 1 tablespoon of coconut oil to your fruit smoothie or protein shake will regulate the release of sugar in a more controlled manner and reduce its glycemic (sugar) level. This provides a sustained energy release rather than a “spike” of energy. A general dietary guideline for coconut oil would be 1 tablespoon per 50 pounds of body weight. Looking to raise metabolism? Coconut oil has a high percentage (almost 50%) of lauric acid (MCT) that helps the body produce energy and unlike carbohydrate energy it is not stored, accumulated, or turned into fat like carbohydrates. Since it is very easily absorbed by your cells, metabolism increases. It can aid in maintaining or losing weight. Sick and tired of being tired? Utilizing coconut oil in your diet just might be the answer. I believe one of the most difficult things for one to do is to undo the fact that many have retrained their bodies to run on sugars rather than quality fats. The human body was not made to run on sugar, not to say you can’t get away with it for awhile, but it will cost you big time in the end, years later, when disease and dysfunction set in. Incorporating coconut oil into the diet will help convert the body back to its original design, to run on quality fats. Additionally, coconut oil has shown the ability to kill bacteria and viruses keeping your immune system in tip top shape, reducing the chances of getting ill. The active ingredient in coconut oil also helps the body overcome the bacteria responsible for food poisoning and urinary tract infections. So get yourself over to a health food store for some coconut oil and fuel up from the tropics! ©2012 Debra Meszaros MXSportsNutrition.com. All rights reserved; no duplication without permission. The Long Journey to Brazil New owner learns about a classic car sold in Warrenton in 1957 by John Toler

The T-Bird was featured on the cover and in a story in the Nov.-Dec. 1989 issue of Early Birds magazine. At the time, Philip and Donalda Edwards, of Wichita, Kansas, owned the car. 46

The Internet can be used to bring people together and provide answers to difficult, even obscure questions. This capability was demonstrated earlier this year when Dave Jenkins, president of Tom Frost Firestone Inc., of Warrenton, received an e-mail from a gentleman in Brazil, which initiated an interesting investigation into the history and origins of a 1957 Ford Thunderbird originally sold in Warrenton. The owner of the 55-year-old car is Thiago Canato, 37, of Sao Paulo. A designer by trade, he is now involved in his passion – classic vehicle restoration. “I have always been a fan of Elvis Presley, where it all began,” said Mr. Canato. “Through his music, I became curious about the 1950s and 1960s, and knew about classic American cars.” In the past, he has owned American classics, including a 1969 Mustang Sports Roof and a 1955 Thunderbird, which he restored and later sold. Two years ago, he found the car of his dreams for sale on the Internet auction site, eBay. The seller was Ray Dumond, of Loudoun, New Hampshire, who had acquired the 1957 Thunderbird several years ago. “After a few e-mails with Mr. Dumond, who sent me some more detailed pictures, I decided that it was the car I was looking for,” recalled Mr. Canato. The automobile in question was a gray T-Bird with a red interior – and only about 60,000 miles on the odometer. Originally finished in Gunmetal Gray (color code N), at some point the car had been repainted the lighter Woodsmoke Gray. Otherwise original, it had matching numbers as indicated on the manufacturing plate, and appeared to have been restored. “I called my customs broker in Miami. He also believed it was a good deal, and made the purchase for me as a ‘Buy It Now (the term used on eBay to meet the seller’s price and end the auction),’” said Mr. Canato. “I sent the money, and he arranged transportation to Miami. He kept the car with him until import and export documentation could be done.” At the time the deal was made, buying a car in the U.S. and importing it to Brazil was attractive because the value of the dollar had fallen. “Once the documents were approved, the car was placed in a container in Miami and transported by ship to Brazil,” he added. When the car arrived in Brazil, another customs broker had to legalize the documents, and Mr. Canato had to pay the required import taxes before taking possession. “Then, the car was ready to go to its new home,” he said. “It started on the first try and ran smoothly. My dream had come true!”

Two years ago, Thiago Canato, of Sao Paulo, Brazil, purchased the classic Thunderbird on the Internet auction site eBay from a gentleman in New Hampshire.

A Car With a History To his surprise, Mr. Dumond had included a folder with the car’s original invoice, maintenance records and a copy of the November-/December 1989 issue of Early Birds magazine, published by the Classic Thunderbird Club. Featured on the cover of the magazine was the 1957 Thunderbird he had just acquired. The article was written by club members Philip and Donalda Edwards (Member #190606), of Wichita, Kansas, who had purchased the car in 1981. They were on a trip from Wichita to Vail, Colo., and while spending the night in Denver, Mr. Edwards picked up a copy of a local newspaper and saw an advertisement for a “1957 Thunderbird with porthole top, rebuilt 312 V-8 engine and automatic transmission, in good condition.” “When I talked to the owner, I liked what I heard,” wrote Mr. Edwards. “The following weekend, we came back through Denver, and made an appointment to see the car.” Arriving at a farm outside of Denver, the owner took the couple to a barn, where the car was stored. “It was not one of the fanciest T-Birds, having no soft-top, dress-up kit,

or radio, much less power options or other optional goodies,” recalled Mr. Edwards. “However, the somewhat rare gunmetal gray color, with black porthole hardtop and bright red interior instantly took our fancy. The information on the manufacturer’s data plate showed that the car was just like it had come from the factory.” A unique feature was the louvered fender skirts, a trademark option that the Ford dealer in Denver put on the 1957 Thunderbirds sold there. The seller had purchased the car five years earlier from “…one family in Virginia that had owned it most of its life,” according to what he told Mr. Edwards. This made the Edwards’ the third owners in 24 years. While they owned the Thunderbird, they installed an air conditioning unit and several dress-up items, and showed the car several times. Who else might have owned the T-Bird between the Edwards and Mr. Dumont is not known, nor when the car was repainted the lighter gray color, or when the black porthole hardtop was replaced with a folding soft top. journey continued on page 48

The original factory invoice listed the delivered price of Mrs. Ceballos’ 1957 Thunderbird ($3065.10), including options and ten gallons of gasoline (at 37.8 cents a gallon.)

Original owner of the Thunderbird was Evalyn D. Ceballos, photographed in Rome in 1963. Courtesy of William G. Prime.

The Thunderbird in Brazil Soon after acquiring the Thunderbird, Mr. Canato continued the restoration work, replacing the white soft top with a black one, as well as the windshield, which was scratched. He also replaced the door window glass, and converted them from manual to power windows. To keep the car “pure,” he used original Ford Motor Co. tinted glass and window motors. Other work included installing a car stereo in place of the original “delete panel,” and adding the characteristic T-Bird rear deck antenna. He plans to repaint the car in the original Gunmetal Gray, noting that there are fewer than twenty 1957 Thunderbirds in Brazil, and his would be the only Gunmetal Gray one. According to production figures, of the 21,380 Thunderbirds produced in 1957, only 850 were painted that color. “To buy and bring a car to Brazil is not cheap.” Explained Mr. Canato. “I live in the country [with] the world’s most expensive taxes. When I bought the car, it cost me 100 percent of its value in taxes and freight. On the other hand, it was a good deal.” He notes that there was a 1957 Thunderbird on the market valued at $120.000 US. “I have another car for daily use, but sometimes, when there is no traffic in Sao Paulo, I drive my Thunderbird,” said Mr. Canato. “And sometimes, I show it.” Recently, his Thunderbird appeared on Garagem do Bellote, a Brazilian 48

television program that features classic and special interest automobiles, including a test drive. It was later put on YouTube (http://youtube.com/ watch?v=ul3VocpMw).

Returning to the Past After completing the mechanical work, Mr. Canato sought to find out who was “the family in Virginia” that had originally owned the car. “I wanted to find the original owner or some relative close to the family, and let them know that the car is still running in perfect condition, and bringing joy wherever it goes.” Mr. Canato started by researching the information on the original invoice included with records, which indicated that the car had been delivered to “Tom Frost, Warrenton, Virginia.” “I Googled some ‘Tom Frosts’ in the USA, and found a famous mountain climber,” he explained. “But he was in California, and I could tell from his age that it wasn’t him.”

Mr. Canato refined his search by adding “Warrenton, Virginia,” and found “Tom Frost Firestone.” He made contact, and to his surprise began e-mail communication with Dave Jenkins, president of Tom Frost Firestone Inc. “Dave was very knowledgeable and attentive to me, and also enthused with the story,” said Mr. Canato. “He told me that ‘Tom Frost’ was the local Ford dealership at the time, and that someone had bought the car there.” In his initial reply, Mr. Jenkins informed Mr. Canato that Tom Frost Firestone was opened in its current location in 1965 by Tom Frost Sr. Previously, the tire business was in the Ford dealership, opened by Mr. Frost in 1946 at 15 Broadview Avenue (now Warrenton Tire). Mr. Jenkins offered to e-mail Mr. Frost’s son, Thomas N. Frost Jr., a retired executive now living in South Carolina, and find out what he might know about a Thunderbird sold at his father’s dealership 55 years ago. It was a long shot, but it soon paid off. Mr. Frost was eager to help, and recalled that Henry Baxley Jr. of Marshall owned a 1957 Thunderbird that originally was sold by Tom Frost Ford. He contacted Mr. Baxley, who brought his receipt for the purchase of the car (he was actually the second owner) to Mr. Jenkins’ office for him to see.

The paperwork wasn’t for Mr. Canato’s car – the vehicle information numbers (VINs) didn’t match; but more importantly, this car is still at Mr. Baxley’s home in Marshall! But a key contact had been made. Over the next week, Mr. Baxley contacted several long-time friends in the area who might have some idea who owned the T-Bird now in Brazil. While at a funeral in Marshall, Mr. and Mrs. Baxley sat near Nelson Slack, 79, of The Plains, who had worked for Tom Frost Ford dealership and its successive dealerships for many years. The conversation moved to ‘57 Thunderbirds. Mr. Slack remembered both Mr. Baxley’s car and an almost identical Gunmetal Gray T-Bird also sold to Mrs. Juan Ceballos (nee Evalyn Douglas, 1904-1983) of Warrenton. “I probably serviced Mrs. Ceballos’ car when it was new, and later went out to her house (Blythewood, on Lee’s Ridge Road) to pick it up to be worked on,” said Mr. Slack. He also remembered that Mr. Baxley’s car and Mrs. Ceballos’ car were delivered to Tom Frost Ford on the same day, on the same truck. It is likely that both cars were pre-sold, rather than ordered for stock, which would explain why the invoice was made out simply to “Tom Frost.” A call was made to Mrs. Ceballos’ son, William Prime, who lives at Blythewood and remembers the car. “My mother drove the Thunderbird for several years,” he said. “When she got a new car, she loaned it to Ellen Craig, who worked for our family for over 50 years, to drive back-and-

forth to her home near Opal.” However, he did not remember when the vehicle left the family, or who bought it. From the information available, it appears that Mrs. Ceballos’ car was sold about 1976 to the man in Denver, and then to the couple in Wichita. Whether there were other owners between them and Mr. Dumond is not known, and surprisingly, the car’s VIN is not listed with the Vintage Thunderbird Registry. What is certain is that the old T-Bird was well cared-for and well loved over the years, and that even though it is very far from home, it will be remembered by all who shared a connection with it.

Tale of two T-Birds While the two 1957 Thunderbirds were built on the same production line and delivered to Tom Frost Ford in Warrenton the same day, there were some subtle differences. Thiago Canato’s car has a 312 cubic inch V-8, while Henry Baxley’s car has a 292 V-8; the Baxley car originally came equipped with power windows and a radio, options Mr. Canato added to his car later. Both came with black porthole hardtops; Mr. Canato’s car lost its hardtop somewhere along the way, while the Baxley car still has one.

Ursula and Henry Baxley of Marshall, and the 1957 Thunderbird they have owned for more than 50 years. It is the “sister” of the Ceballos car, now in Brazil.

The Canato car has had at least five owners, while the Baxley car has had only two. Originally sold to the van Roijen family, the Baxley’s car was damaged in 1961 when it was driven through a fence. The owners decided to trade it in for a Corvette at the old Hickman Chevrolet dealership, rather than repairing it. “After 1957, the Thunderbird became a four-seater, and the van Roijens didn’t want one of those,” said Mr. Baxley. After the car was repaired, Hickman salesman Billy Wines, who was in the Warrenton Jaycees with Mr. Baxley, offered to sell him the car. Sale price was $1,995, less $350 if he traded-in his 1957 Renault. A private pilot, Mr. Baxley had just sold his Cessna aircraft for $2,000, so he took advantage of the offer. “I liked the car, but thought I would just be keeping it for a little while,” said Mr. Baxley. In the 50-plus years since acquiring the car, the Baxleys have enjoyed driving it, and for many years were members of area vintage T-Bird clubs. It has been driven in many parades, carrying such notables as Sen. John Warner, Gov. George Allen, and Gov. Tim Kaine. Not an idle show car, it has been driven more than 245,000 miles. While their children were at Fauquier High School, Mr. Baxley was asked every year to drive the car in the Homecoming parade in the afternoon, and then in the evening during the half-time show at the football game. Not all memories are happy. While the T-Bird was at a local shop to be repainted in July 1987, joy-riding teenagers stole it. Days later it was found along a back road where the thieves left it when it ran out of gas. Not content to simply abandon the car, they trashed it, smashing the windshield with a rock and throwing the hardtop into the woods. The perpetrators were caught, and after much debate with the parties involved, the car was repaired and returned to them “…with a beautiful paint job,” said Mrs. Baxley. Although the two classic cars arrived in Warrenton on the same day and both were driven around on county roads for many years, no connection was ever made once the cars left the dealership. “I remember seeing the other ’57 Thunderbird around town, but I didn’t know who owned it,” said Mr. Baxley. “Now I do.”

Life & Living It

PERSONALIT Y It was my first night as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II and as I lay in my bunk, one of a long row of bunks in a barrack at Ft. Dix, I could hear crying in the darkness. It brought forth a childhood memory of my first day at school. My mother had prepared me for a wonderful experience and I was eager to start. Around me, however, were crying children. My mother explained that they were afraid of leaving their parents; a trait which I have since learned is called separation anxiety. I was surrounded by adults this time, some of whom may very well have been exhibiting the same personality traits of shyness, fear, and anxiety they had held since childhood. Personality exhibits itself shortly after birth. We “ooh and aah” as we look at the smile of the infant. Later in life we recoil from a stranger’s rough voice. Personality defines our essence in every stage of development in our lives. In the course of growing up we build a huge number of traits. 52

In describing people we may refer to their physical appearance, more commonly we use such words as warm, outgoing, gruff, hostile, friendly, or shy. In other words, their personality. Very simply, to us the personality is the person. When we use the pronoun “I,” we are summing up everything about ourselves – our likes and dislikes, our fears and virtues, our strengths and weaknesses. The word “I” separates us from all others. The brain is “plastic,” i.e. it adapts to experiences. The work we go through as children constructs our consciousness. What we call “I” is changeable from minute to minute. Starting with our infantile personality we develop it into the combination of traits we carry most of our lives. Skillful parents can encourage their children to have a positive attitude, keep an optimistic mind, be fun loving, and be of a caring nature. Equally important is for the parent as a role model to have a positive self-concept as well as love toward the child. Firm

but loving. Authoritative, not authoritarian. Personality, however, has its darker side. Parents can create in their children, by abusing or neglecting them, a dysfunctional defense mechanism, which protects them temporarily, but unfortunately may last for life. Constancy is a positive factor; inflexibility is another. Under the influence of stress, traits can be fixated during early childhood development. What are called personality disorders are recognized by some of the following signs – pervasiveness across most situations, a marked deviation from expectations in our culture and an enduring pattern of distress or impairment. Certain personality disorders, in addition to containing the above symptoms, have their own traits. Someone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, for example, may show some of the following: a need for admiration, a lack of empathy starting in adolescence, an exaggeration personality continued on page 54 Warrenton Lifestyle

childhood. Intensive research by the Mayo Clinic and other reputable laboratories indicate that abuse can contribute to the development of personality disorders. Even verbal abuse can have an impact, such actions as parents screaming at their children. Children of such parents are three times as likely as other children to have personality disorders in adulthood. As life hands us traumatic events, we turn to whatever coping mechanisms we have built. Adults use their years of experience to handle the situation. A child’s traumatic experiences can have a devastating effect. A child’s ability to be productive and healthy depends on his or her experience in childhood. If these experiences are chaotic and traumatic, the child’s potentiality is diminished.

In 1954 the movie “The Three Faces of Eve” disclosed to the general public the existence of multiple personalities. This is where two or more integrated selves coexist simultaneously in a single body. Once again, the roots of this disorder are in severe child abuse. It is common for a child, who is being sexually molested, to say she/he was hiding in the closet watching her/his body on the bed being abused. The child is isolating the associated feelings and memories from conscious awareness. This is the defense. She/he is dissociating -- in effect, creating another “I.” While not everyone who is abused becomes a multiple personality, the two are connected and virtually everyone who is diagnosed as multiple has been severely physically and/or sexually

of his or her achievements, an expectation to be recognized as superior, or a preoccupation with success, power, beauty or brilliance. Those with Histrionic Personality Disorder may exhibit some of the following – excessive emotionality, being uncomfortable when not the center of attention, being inappropriately sexually seductive, or showing excessive attention seeking often using physical appearance to accomplish this. A third type is Borderline Personality Disorder where a person might exhibit an instability of interpersonal relationships; has an unstable self-image; perhaps has recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures or threats; may have brief periods of intensive episodes of irritability

54

or anxiety; or may show impulsivity regarding spending, sex, substance abuse, reckless driving, or binge eating. There are other personality disorders but caution is suggested at this point. Please note above the use of the words “may” and “might.” Immediate diagnoses by a layman or even a licensed therapist can be false. Any one of us can have one or more of the above traits. The difference between having a disorder or not is the inflexibility – the fact that the person’s behavior is different from what would be expected in our culture, appears to be unchanging, takes place across almost all situations and often leads to distress in some form. The onset of this pattern can often be traced back to adolescence or early

abused. The person isolates the feelings and memories from conscious awareness. This split usually begins to occur before the age of five but not ordinarily diagnosed until adulthood. Personalities are built from the moment of birth and continue to develop throughout a lifetime. No two people have the same personality. Siblings who are reared together in the same family often grow up to have different interests, abilities, and beliefs. While it may appear that they have the same environment, it may be diametrically the opposite depending on how they are treated by their parents. While we have very little control over our own personality except to try to develop its positive aspects, we have everything to do with the

creation of the personality of our children. Approximately five million American children experience some form of traumatic event of which more than two million are victims of physical and/or sexual abuse. Trauma is not just stress. It is an experience that induces an abnormally intense and prolonged stress response. My adult patients, in selfexamining, often find themselves describing what in psychological circles are called “toxic parents.” They speak of a chaotic childhood. On the other hand, with the same soft stroke of a brush that an artist might use, parents can also create beautiful personalities in their children.

Fauquier & the arts

O. Henry Stories Put a Sentimental Spin on Season By Dixie Walters Looking for entertainment that’s slightly out of the ordinary this holiday season? Fauquier Community Theatre will subtly illuminate the spirit of the season with its presentation of “An O. Henry Christmas,” a musical by Peter Ekstrom that is based on the works of renowned short story writer O. Henry. Ekstrom wrote the music and lyrics and adapted for the stage two classic O. Henry stories, the well-known “Gift of the Magi” and “The Last Leaf.” The musical selections underscore sad, yet joyous, themes of sacrifice and love in a two-act production. “The stories imbue the best of what Christmas should be about, as far as it being better to give than receive,” says director Leland Shook. “It’s the Christmas spirit without the ‘stuff.’ ”

The cast of an O, Henry Christmas takes a break for a picture on top of the Theater. Photo by Leeland Shook Photograpy

Don Richardson, the play’s producer, has a similar take: “This musical is for those who remember what the Christmas season used to be about before modern commercialism took it over and turned it into a celebration of material things.”

The Unexpected Twist

Date Night?

That’s not to say they’re neatly wrapped up with a bow on top. “This isn’t Jingle Bells or Rudolph,” Shook notes wryly.

“I think this is a great date play,” says Shook. “It’s about making a sacrifice for love, about giving everything you can to someone else regardless of what it might cost you.”

Both stories are set in turn-of-thecentury New York City. Beyond that commonality, they’re mostly tied together by events that take a surprising turn, an O. Henry trademark. “The stories are very sweet,” says Shook. “They’re about unconditional love and about sacrifice in the name of that love.”

“The Last Leaf,” the first of the two plays, tells the story of two aspiring female artists and roommates in Greenwich Village, one of whom spends most of the play battling pneumonia. As the young woman falls deeper into sickness, she fixates on a leafy vine outside her apartment window. She becomes convinced she’ll die when the last leaf falls from the vine. An elderly immigrant neighbor, who befriends the young women and shares their artistic yearnings, ultimately gives the gift of life to the sickly young woman in an unexpected, extremely touching manner. The better-known story, “The Gift of the Magi,” is about a young couple who are poor but deeply in love. Despite their financial situation, they desperately want to give the other the perfect gift at Christmas time. Each finds a surprising way to do so with an unforeseen and ironic result. 62

Although the production’s content is not suggestive in any way, Shook notes that “An O. Henry Christmas” may be best appreciated by theatergoers ranging in age from the teen years and up, simply because overly youthful audiences may not understand the mature themes.

The two one-act plays are staged by a small cast that includes Gene Bates, Joe Bersack, Danielle Curtis, Betsy Hansen, Emily Hibl and Stephen Kutzleb. On the heels of “An O. Henry Christmas,” FCT will stage the delightful all-ages “Elmer the Elf” musical from Dec. 21-23, an original production written by Fauquier County resident Charles Jennings. “An O. Henry Christmas” will be presented Nov. 30-through Dec. 2, Dec. 7-9 and Dec. 14-16. Curtain time is 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets range from $13 for seniors and students to $15 for an adult ticket and are available online at fctstage.org. A combined ticket to see the show and enjoy dinner at the Inn at Vint Hill is available for the Dec. 9 performance. Warrenton Lifestyle
