Piedmont Regional Orchestra
arrenton’s own symphony, the Piedmont Regional Orchestra (PRO) opened its tenth season under the baton of new music director Glenn S. Quader. Michael Hughes founded the PRO in 1996 to give students, adult amateurs and professional musicians the opportunity to perform classical and contemporary music before a live audience. The orchestra now numbers 55 members and attracts musicians from as far away as Culpeper and Fredericksburg. The concerts appeal to a variety of tastes and offer children and adults the chance to enjoy the beauty and richness of classical music in the intimate setting of the acoustically crafted Rice Theater at the Highland Center for the Arts. This season’s theme is “Art of the Ages” and each concert celebrates a different genre of art. The opening concert in November celebrated “The Art of the Dance” and featured music by Copland, Strauss and others. The February 12th children’s concert “The Art of Storytelling” is generously sponsored by The Fauquier Bank and includes Gregory Smith’s “Mr. Smith’s Composition” narrated by PRO founder Michael Hughes. The highlight will be the U.S. premiere of two works by Danish composer Henning Wellejus, inspired by the stories of Hans Christian Andersen. To mark the 200th anniver-
sary of Andersen’s birth, the afternoon will showcase entries from the PROsponsored student art contest with Andersen as the theme. The always Glen S. Quader popular Young Music Director & Conductor Artists’ Competition returns for its fifth year on April 2nd. This concert is the culmination of a months-long selection process which yields three finalists who will solo with the orchestra at the concert. The winners will be announced then and cash prizes awarded. The program concludes with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. The 2005-2006 season ends June 4th with “Bella Voce (Beautiful Voice)” sponsored by Country Chevrolet. This concert is dedicated to opera and choral works and the PRO will share the stage with the Warrenton Chorale, under conductor and music director Steve Aiello. Featured will be guest soloists soprano Kay Krekow and tenor Harry Dunstan. All performances begin at 3 P.M. at the Highland School, Warrenton. Tickets can be purchased in advance in Warrenton at g. whillikers Toys and Books and the Berkley Gallery or at the

door on concert day. Prices are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors 65 and over, $5 for students 12 and up and free for children under 12. All attendees require a ticket. Season tickets at substantial savings can be purchased early in the season. As a non-profit organization, PRO depends on concert goers and other music lovers to meet the cost of mounting each concert season. It also needs volunteers on stage and behind the scenes, willing to donate their energy, talents and time. Newcomers are always welcome. The orchestra is especially seeking individuals to help with computer support, publicity and marketing, fundraising and event planning. For additional information, to make a donation or volunteer your time, call 270-3168 or visit the PRO website www.prorchestra.org.

Combating Winter Depression H o-ho-ho! ‘Tis the season to be jolly! However, for some people the Christmas and New Year holiday season was perhaps not that jolly and their jolliness may be decreasing even more as we move into the winter months. The symptoms stand out – lethargy, change in weight, craving for sweets, change in sleep habits, difficulty awakening, change in appetite. Those who are not too affected chalk this up to “Winter Blues” but for a small minority we may be looking at the more serious Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD. This type of depression is separate from all other forms of depression in that it is apparently directly related to the decrease of light as the days shorten. Long stretches of cloudy weather can also aggravate the condition. Humans have a sleep-wake cycle of 24 hours and a change in the light-dark ratio can cause this type of depression.
Adolescents often have a longer innate cycle with a desire to stay up late or sleep in. Especially affected are those who work in shifts, for example nurses. Close to 80% of those who suffer from SAD are women. Moving to more southern climates in the winter has been shown to lessen the depression. Moving to more northern areas can, conversely, increase its incidence. For those whose lives are not seriously affected, a simple increase in light intake can slow down the depressed feelings. A one-hour daily walk, even when the skies are overcast, can make a difference. An indoor walk on a treadmill, while physically beneficial, does not alleviate the symptoms of SAD. The amount of light needed depends on the individual. Special light boxes have been developed for those who need stronger light although side effects could be eyestrain and/or headaches.
People suffering from diabetes or retinal degeneration might be wise to consult their physician before using these devices. Furthermore, physical illnesses could masquerade as depression. Those people exhibiting the above symptoms are urged to contact their health providers where they may be prescribed medication, psychotherapy, or a combination. Robert B. Iadeluca, Ph.D. is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. His office is located at 436 Hospital Drive in Warrenton. He specializes in addiction, depression, anxiety and chronic pain.
