Money Runs Like Water Through My Fingers by Andreas A. Keller
“M
oney runs like water through my fingers!” my client answered when I asked her where all the money she keeps borrowing goes. My subsequent warning that high debt levels would leave her financially vulnerable only brought a radiant smile to her face, and she said: “I have champagne taste; I live on a beer budget and my credit cards bridge the gap.” I thought to myself that her philosophy would work, but only for a while, and I asked her if she was concerned about the possibility of facing her creditors one day. Her answer made my heart skip a beat: “Isn’t it their problem?” she asked. “Every week I receive a new credit card offer. Some I use, and some I don’t, and
if one day I can’t pay back, they lose the money. So, my problem becomes their problem!” My client must have taken pity on me when she saw the expression of disbelief on my face and continued: “Let me tell you the story of Alibaba.” And with an animated voice she introduced me to Alibaba, a poor farmer who lived with his wife in a very small house and worked his rice paddies. One summer there was not enough rain to grow a full crop, and soon Alibaba could no longer make
ends meet. His wife suggested that he borrow money from their rich neighbor across the street. Alibaba heeded his wife’s good advice, and he promised his neighbor he would pay him back very soon. But the dry season continued, and Alibaba grew worried about how to pay back his debt. He started to have trouble sleeping, and he began pacing the floor every night – back and forth, back and forth. The neighbor, watching Alibaba pace the floor, opened his window every night to shout across the street, “Alibaba, I want my money back!” Then he would shut the window and go to sleep. Alibaba, getting sick with worry and fright, turned to his wife one day and asked, “Wife, what can I do? I don’t have the money to pay back our neighbor, and I can’t sleep anymore.” See Money on page 6

Money continued from page 5 His wife responded: “I know, Alibaba, this is terrible. You pace the floor every night and can’t sleep anymore. Maybe you should tell our neighbor about your situation.” That night, as Alibaba paced the floor, the neighbor’s window flew open, and he bellowed, “Alibaba I want my money back!” As usual, the neighbor then shut the window and went to bed. Alibaba, trembling, walked over to the window, opened it wide and shouted across the street, “I can’t pay you back!” Alibaba closed his window, went to bed, and slept soundly while the
6
neighbor began pacing the floor. My client’s story etched itself into my memory, because I realized that, at some point in our lives, we can all relate to Alibaba’s vulnerability. A self-employed person who fails to achieve sufficient revenue in a slowing economy; corporate downsizing that leaves employees panicked that they may lose their jobs; a sudden illness or an unexpected emergency that leaves a person unprepared; all of these scenarios can put a person in the same situation as Alibaba. Prepared or not, we have to deal with these types of life events. Admittedly, such unexpected events would be easier to deal with if a financial cushion were available. Lines of credit from different credit card companies, however, do not qualify as a financial cushion. They are a poor and risky substitute for a true financial cushion: a cash emergency fund consisting of about three to six months of living expenses. An emergency fund, or simply a solid stash of cash in a bank account, has a better calming effect than Valium or Prozac. It provides peace of mind – a goal not easily achieved. Although building an emergency fund takes time for most of us, the real difficulty lies in disciplining oneself to keep tabs on how money
ebbs and flows. Determining where money comes from is easy; figuring out where it goes is more challenging. During a typical year we spend about 2000 hours at work creating an income. However, for too many of us, managing money is a neglected affair. Most of us do not spend more than 20 or 30 hours per year taking care of our money. If making money equals one hundred percent of our time and managing money is allotted only one or two percent of our time, it may just be that we do not have enough respect for our hardearned money. Money needs to be treated with respect, or else it will leave and search for a place where it will be taken care of and receive the attention it deserves. Money

Money continued from page 6 is attracted to smart people who take it seriously and know how to hold on to a good thing. Those people follow one basic rule: Live within your means! People who live within their means do not have any special talent or expensive equipment to figure out how to do so. Instead, these people use two simple things to manage and grow their money: a pencil and some paper. Together, a pencil and paper create the most important tool in managing and growing money: a budget. A personal budget is a rich man’s tool to control the flow of money. Without the help of a budget, money flows like water through fingers, which means that money will not be available when the roof springs a leak, the timing belt on the car busts, a medical emergency arises, college bills are looming, or retirement approaches. Unless we live below our financial potential, there is just no way to ensure that we will be protected from the vagaries of life. The key to make a successful personal budget is to pay oneself first. The first line
8
on your budget should read SAVINGS. If it is the last line, the corresponding number will be a big, fat zero. Once you have budgeted for your savings first, it will be much easier to use those savings to build an emergency fund. And, as demonstrated by the story of Alibaba, building an emergency fund is the first step to building long-term wealth and gaining financial independence. The goal of financial independence should be on everyone’s list of New Year’ resolutions. Creating a budget, building an emergency fund, and setting financial goals are just some of the first hurdles to jump. Year after year, those hurdles become easier to jump as we master the art of making and sticking to a personal budget. You can get some budgeting help online at www. MortgageMomentsOnline.com. Click on the “Wealth” link, go to “Home Budget Analysis,” and click on the “Expense Calculations” link. Spending one hour per week on managing one’s finances will pay immeasurable dividends. In investors’ lingo, you will enjoy an incredibly high ROI or return on investment, and you
will be well on your way to ensuring that you never fall into the trap in which Alibaba fell.

New Years Resolution: Give Back by Amy Petty
W
elcome to 2007! Maybe you’ve already made your resolutions for this year. Who knows? You may have already even broken some of them. I’m sure I have. Instead of the usual things on your list, try something different. Reach out to your community and give your time and talents to help others. Countless organizations in the area can use your help. Read about a few of them below, or do some research on your own about other groups. Find the group that is the right fit for your interests and get after it.
American Red Cross – Fauquier Chapter
The Fauquier Chapter of the American Red Cross has a positive impact, locally and nationally, helping families and communities in times of need. Whether it’s traveling to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina or helping someone right here in town, their track record of success is undeniable. They work with you to discern your abilities and match them to the volunteer opportunity best suited to you. What are those opportunities? It may be helping with the blood drives, fundraising, education, public relations, disaster relief, office work and more.
spay/neuter information, tattoo and tag info, and behavioral training (and you know, it’s often us people who are the problem).
Fauquier Family Shelter
Services, Inc.
You have probably driven by The Haven Emergency Shelter, located beside the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office, without even knowing what it was. The 7,100 square foot building can house up to 11 families and eight single adults at any one time. The Haven works to help families get back on their feet in a safe environment. Volunteers will find endless possilibites for volunteering, including financial mentoring, tutoring, fundraising,
administrative planning.

Fauquier Free Clinic
Since 1993, the Fauquier Free Clinic has served thousands of patients by providing free medical and dental care. Many of the areas physicians and dentists gladly offer their services to those unable to pay for treatment themselves. But just because you’re not a doctor doesn’t mean you’re not able to help. Volunteers are needed to help with many other responsibilities at the clinic as well. From fund raising to staffing the clinic, there are many opportunities to serve your community. Contact the Fauquier Free Clinic at 540/349-0394 for more information. See Give Back on page 40
Fauquier County SPCA
This year, the Fauquier County SPCA is celebrating their 50th anniversary of offering protection and assistance to animals in and around Fauquier County. Not only do they help find homes for animals in need of adoption, they also offer lost and found assistance, pet therapy, humane educational training,

Fauquier Habitat for Humanity
Plans have long been underway for Sterling Court, a seven duplex (14 residences) development for Fauquier Habitat for Humanity families. Located near Old Town Warrenton, these duplexes will be a hand up, not a hand out, for families looking to own their first homes. Qualifying families contribute many hours of “sweat equity” to make their dreams a reality. Partnering with these families are volunteers who are generous with their time and money. RE/ MAX Regency, an All-Faiths Build of area churches, and another Women’s Build are already in the works. Consider joining one of the established groups. The Women’s Build group will meet the third Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express in Warrenton. Other groups will be organized over the coming months. Challenge your business or organization to sponsor a Habitat house.
Fauquier Health System
Over the years, the Fauquier Hospital Auxiliary has donated an unbelievable amount of time and money to our
40
area’s non-profit hospital. Donations of time save the hospital hundreds of thousands of dollars annually, directly helping Fauquier Health System continue its care for patients, no matter their ability to pay. Maybe you have the time to help staff the front desk or emergency department waiting room for a couple of hours a week. Maybe you want to get involved with the Pet Therapy Program. You might consider spending some time visiting with residents at Warrenton Overlook. Volunteers do need to go through a special orientation to become familiar with hospital regulations and practices.
Partnership of Warrenton
Throughout the year, Old Town Warrenton is a great place for shopping, entertainment and business. During December, it really lights up. Literally. Who The Partnership For doesn’t love going to Gumdrop Warrenton Foundation Square during the holidays? Many volunteers come together to make this such a magical place for children to visit Santa and shop for their families. The Partnership for Warrenton makes this, and other Main Street events, possible. In addition to the organizations above, many other worthy groups in the area can use your assistance. If none of them float your boat, many schools and churches can surely make good use of your spare time. And speaking of spare time, we’re all very busy. But if everyone makes even the smallest
Warrenton Lifestyle
effort, imagine the good that will come to the members of our community. This is your town, your neighbors. Let’s do what we can to make it better than it already is. For more information on the organizations above, call or visit their websites. They’re waiting to hear from you! American Red Cross – Fauquier Chapter www.fauquiercounty.redcross.org 540/349-2516

A Great Reason to Shop Warrenton First: Reason #1. Property Tax Offset: Our Warrenton area businesses pay County, Town, local sales, personal property and business license taxes without putting a burden on public services and schools. $1 in business taxes collected in Warrenton or Fauquier County is $1 less that has to be raised in property taxes.
