elcome to 2008, a year that promises to be Warrenton Lifestyle Magazine’s finest yet. First, we are introducing a local business directory, something that has been needed in our community for a long time. Creating a directory seemed like a daunting task and we pondered our approach for many months. We needed criteria and decided that our first directory would include only businesses with a license in the Town of Warrenton. With tremendous cooperation from the Town staff, we began the painstaking process of cleaning up the list, creating categories, and gathering local contact information. Piedmont Press & Graphics mailed a personalized postcard to everyone on the list, over 750 businesses, and asked each of them to update their information. Finally, with the help of Jacques Smith and the team at SonaBank, we designed and created an online, searchable version of our directory. As our merchants continue to send us their 25 keywords linked to their listing, residents will be able to go to our site, type in keywords (like ‘shoes’, ‘wine’ or ‘money’) and get a listing of every business with those keywords. Also, citizens can search by category or company name. For example, are you looking for someone to do your hair? There are no less than 23 businesses in the Town of Warrenton that cater to haircutting needs. Our goal is to make it easier for you to locate the fine merchants that make Warrenton a wonderful place to shop. Obviously, we understand the benefits when area residents shop the stores that share the same tax base. The purpose of our magazine is to bring those stores and individuals together by creating an acute awareness of what exists. We’ve taken the extra step to help facilitate it. for a walk, do twenty sit-ups, dance to your favorite song, or substitute your vice for carrot or celery sticks, chewing on a straw or meditation. One of the most important things to have as you work toward your goals is forgiveness. Breaking bad habits and changing behavior is not easy. Be able to forgive yourself if you don’t reach one of your deadlines. “Do not give up if you take a step backwards. Instead, determine what is not working and make adjustments,” advises Graham. Not reaching a goal on time is not a sign of failure. It just means that you need new strategies. If you just can’t seem to stop yourself from having a cigarette after dinner, then maybe you should try to have dinner at a different time or in a different place. Perhaps you can amend your interim goal to reflect this change – instead of trying to not have a cigarette after dinner you can extend the length of time between dinner and your smoke break. Rewarding yourself is just as important as forgiveness. “Rewards are a wonderful way to recognize the achievement of goals,” encourages Graham. “You can create weekly and monthly rewards for incremental achievements such as taking yourself to a sporting event or play or purchasing a new book or CD.” The New Year also encourages many of us to make a fresh start in our professional lives, whether it’s starting or revising our own business or becoming more successful in a career. “Quite often people promise themselves, in broad terms, to become more efficient, both with their time and money, in order to increase their profitability and/or productivity,” says Suzanne Corbett of the Marshall Consulting Group, LLC in Warrenton. She suggests starting the New Year with a business plan to determine the best path for getting your company or career on track. “You should set attainable short-term goals (monthly, quarterly and annually) and then have longer-term goals for the next three and five years,” recommends Corbett. “These goals should be reviewed on a regular basis so that you are able to monitor the results and measure your success in 8

concrete numbers.” Our business goals, much like our personal goals, need to be broken into smaller, well-defined steps that are “clear, concise and communicated,” adds Corbett. With each smaller goal it is important to decide how to accomplish it and who will be responsible for it. Part of being a more organized businessperson is determining what roles other people should have in your company. Very few

For example, it would be advantageous to have a professional accountant, legal counsel, salesperson and marketing expert close

While you may not be able to afford all of these people on your payroll, it would be wise to have them on an asneeded basis as you work toward reaching the goals you have set for your business. Some of your personal and professional goals may overlap. Money is one thing that concerns us on both levels. “People who make financial New Year’s resolutions tend to be concerned with either reducing debt or increasing income,” says Andreas Keller, Senior Loan Officer of Mid-Atlantic Mortgage Corporation of Warrenton. Keller suggests the best way to increase your wealth is to pay yourself first. He recommends immediately deducting 10 to 20 percent of each paycheck and putting it into some sort of savings plan and learning to live off of what is left. This will mean living below your means. “Stick to this formula and you build wealth. Ignore this formula and you are likely to live from hand to mouth,” says Keller. are best met by starting with a formal plan. Keller advises the development of a financial strategy involving clear targets. If your plan is to reduce your debt, start by making purchases with cash only, no more credit cards. Next, call your creditors and ask if they are willing to lower your monthly obligations and/or their interest rates. Either, or both, of these reductions will mean that the same monthly payments will pay off your debt more quickly. One formula you can use to determine if it’s best to spend extra cash to pay off debts or to deposit into savings 10

is to compare interest rates. If your credit card has a rate of fifteen percent and your mutual fund only averages ten, then you’ll want to work toward paying off your credit card first. On the other hand, if you have a bank loan with a rate of seven percent, then you are better off putting the extra cash into savings. If your goal is to increase your income this year, you will need to decide how that will be possible. If you work for someone else, then your income is dependent on that person or company. Talking with your boss may or may not be a good idea, but you should try to determine if you can count on a raise or bonus. You may decide that additional income will

need to come from other sources. Selling things online or moonlighting might be good alternatives. Whatever you resolve to do this year, do it right: start with a plan. The best plans are set in writing with realistic, measurable goals. Remember that you aren’t alone. Employ the aid of others as much as possible. Fauquier Heritage Institute Lecture Series 1:

War Between the States in Fauquier County Donald R. Tharpe will present the inaugural lecture in a series on American history topics sponsored by the library and newly formed Fauquier Heritage Institute. Mr. Tharpe will present a lecture entitled The War Between the States in Fauquier County on Sunday, Jan. 20, at 3 p.m. in the John Barton Payne Building, 2 Courthouse Square, Old Town Warrenton. As founder of the Liberty Heritage Society, Mr. Tharpe will talk about his research on Fauquier County during the Civil War. The lecture will be followed by a question and answer period. Mr. Tharpe, a Virginia native, has studied architecture and archaeology in Virginia and abroad in places such as Israel, Jordan, Greece and Turkey. He is currently researching the social, economic, religious, and legal history of Fauquier County. He is a lecturer at the Smithsonian Institution and serves as an advisor to numerous museums and historical organizations in Virginia and nationally. The Fauquier Heritage Institute is presenting free lectures monthly throughout 2008. The 60- to 90- minute lectures will be presented by experienced speakers and historians. Future Fauquier Heritage Institute lectures will include such topics as the French and Indian War, John Singleton Mosby, Project Apollo to the Moon, the Revolutionary War, Warrentonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s war-time hospital sites, slave records in Fauquier County, Kellyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ford, Elk Run, and gold mining. ome were transferred to the area and stumbled upon Warrenton which they found to be an idealic small town. Others moved here when they were young, lucky enough to spend their formative years in such a nurturing atmosphere. Still, others were born at Fauquier Hospital, calling Warrenton home since birth. Then there are those who chose to live in Warrenton as adults. Out of all the places in the world, how do they find it? Here are the stories of how three of our area medical professionals came to call Warrenton home.

When Warrenton dentist Dr. Rob Flikeid was looking for a new dental associate, he didn’t expect the search to lead him to married dentists Dr. Carlos Aponte and Dr. Maritza Diaz from Puerto Rico. But Dr. Flikeid, recently voted Best Dentist in Warrenton 2007, was pleasantly surprised to gain two knowledgeable dentists who not only bring more than 50 combined years of experience, but also meet the needs of the Spanish speaking population.

Most physicians wouldn’t think of leaving a successful career at Johns Hopkins, but interventional radiologist Dr. Adam Winick did just that in June 2001. His motivation for moving is one that often finds families relocating to the Warrenton area – a better environment for raising his family.

The move was a big decision for their family. Leaving their tropical paradise took more than just a quick judgment. Says Dr. Aponte, “Moving to the mainland from Puerto Rico has been the most difficult decision we have ever made. My wife and I decided after 25 years of owning a dental office in Puerto Rico that there were better opportunities on the mainland for our profession. Dr. Winick recalls, “I was working tremendous hours, upwards of 100 hours a week. The joy of medicine was waning away. It was untenable. Plus, they don’t pay that well because they expect you to want to work there for the reputation. I needed to go into private practice for my own mental health and to afford college for my kids one day. I wanted to look for a private practice in a nice area, and I wanted a great place to raise a family. I remember driving down 29, and for this city boy it was quite a view. It was one of the most beautiful areas I had ever been. Every time a comment was posted about Warrenton, it was mentioned how lovely it was. So, I started searching for job opportunities around here. I came across a posting from Dr. Flikeid, who was searching for an associate dentist.” Dr. Diaz remembers coming to visit Warrenton for the first time and how quickly she was taken with the area. “As we were driving along, we were captured by the beauty and calmness of the area. Such beautiful houses with huge lawns. Horses everywhere, lots of space, greenery, country, but still so near Washington, DC. We were absolutely enchanted! I remember seeing the courthouse for the first time and loving the architecture and the relaxed ambience of Main Street. It reminded me of where I was raised. I immediately fell in love with Old Town.”

Since moving to the area, Drs. Aponte and Diaz have continued to enjoy the benefits of living in Warrenton. “My wife and I were charmed with Warrenton when we visited for the first time. We met the Flikeids, and they genuinely welcomed us to their hometown, to their friends, and they made us feel at home. They were able to grasp how difficult and important this decision was to our family and helped make it easier for us. They even came to visit us in San Juan. Since we’ve moved here we feel that once people find out that you’ve joined this community, they go out of their way to make you feel welcomed. We really enjoy that sense of community in Warrenton and find it very easy to strike up a conversation

with people you’ve just met. We also enjoy that we are close enough to Washington if we choose to go there to

partake in all that the city has to offer, but we are far enough to enjoy the quiet and slower pace of small town living. It is this lifestyle, I believe, that makes the people we’ve met offer us their friendship, for which we are very grateful.”

Virginia Lions Bland Music Scholarship Competition The annual Virginia Lions music scholarship competition in the honor of James Bland will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church on January 26, 2008, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Registration begins at 9:1 AM. James Bland is the composer of Carry Me Back to Old Virginia, the state song for many decades. The competition is divided into two categories, vocal and instrumental. Application cut off date is January 12, 2008. The contest is limited to twenty contestants. Early applications are encouraged. First place winners will compete in regional and those winners in district competitions. Twelve winners of the district contests will compete at the state level where twelve music scholarships will be awarded. The church is located at 6194 Dumfries Road, Warrenton, VA . Volunteering is in the Family One of the greatest resources available to Fauquier Health System is its volunteers. In fact, this year volunteers have donated more than 30,000 hours of their time. Last year, Sandy Dorion and her mother, Gale Mullikin, found themselves spending a lot of time at Fauquier Hospital when Gale’s mother was in and out of the hospital with health problems. What started as a mother-daughter volunteering team has turned into three generations of one family volunteering for Fauquier Health System. Says Sandy, “My mom and I were up there all the time with my grandmother anyway, so we decided why not make a little more use of our time when we were there. She was there, but she’d be sleeping or in physical therapy. We thought, ‘We’re still here, but we don’t have to be hovering over her’ We had it in the back of our minds for a year or two that we wanted to do something. This got us started.”

One of the deciding factors was the atmosphere at the hospital. “We loved all of the nurses, how much they care for the people. Fauquier Hospital is such a nice, friendly place to be. Plus, we feel like we’re doing some good for somebody,” Sandy continued. Sandy’s daughters, Ashley (16) and Rachel (13), signed up for the Junior Volunteer program this past summer. On teaching her daughters to give back to the community, Sandy says, “We’ve raised them to give to others, to help those less fortunate. Volunteering their time at Fauquier Hospital has been another way to help, to give something back. It not only kept them busy over the summer, but it also gave them a wonderful opportunity to be involved in the community. Plus, like me and my mother, I think they saw what a wonderful atmosphere it is when they were up there visiting their great grandmother.” Keeping it in the family has proven to be a bonding experience for these ladies.
