Virginia Outdoors Foundation offers permanent solutions for saving open space Along with striking photographs of rural properties protected by easements held by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation in their 2011 calendar are quotes from participating landowners. The remark made by a Fauquier County property owner is typical, and central to the mission of VOF: “I have never felt that I ‘own’ this land; rather, it is entrusted to me as a caretaker until such time as I pass it along.” Preservation of open space is critical to Virginia, and while several private groups in the state focus on various important aspects of conservation, the mission of VOF is much broader and far-reaching. VOF was created by the Virginia General Assembly in 1966. Its stated purpose is to “…promote the preservation of open space lands and to encourage gifts of money, securities, 6

land or other property to preserve the natural, scenic, historic, scientific open-space and recreational areas of the Commonwealth.” About half of VOF’s $3 million annual budget comes from a state appropriation, and the rest from donations, grants, and the $1 deed recordation fee collected by all jurisdictions where VOF has at least one easement. A fee collected for the transfer of tax credits from a property owner to someone else is a new source of income for the VOF. VOF can protect open-space lands under different arrangements. Currently, VOF easements range in size from .64-acre parkland property in Arlington to the 11,363-acre Carvins Cove property in Roanoke and Botetourt counties, held jointly by VOF and the Western Virginia Land Trust. An independent public body, VOF is governed by a seven-member board of trustees appointed by the Governor. Former Fauquier County Supervisor Henry F. “Harry” Atherton of Marshall represents the Northern Piedmont Region on the board. Bob Lee, of Warrenton, has served as VOF executive director since 2005. Current trends

While VOF’s accomplishments are impressive, Lee notes that the economic slowdown that started in 2007 has affected the number of new VOF easements, with 2010 the agency’s slowest year since he has served as executive director. Through November 2010, statewide easements stood at 70, encompassing 13,800 acres, compared with 143 easements covering 39,732 acres through November 2009, and 154 easements covering 44,857 acres through November 2008. Beverley Mill Drive (off Turner Road) in Prince William County. Further down Beverley Mill Drive, inside a gate, is the mill. Further north on Bull Run Mountain is the site of Capt. John Singleton Mosby’s prisoner-of-war camp, where Union captives were held until they could be turned over to a higher command, and the Creel House, a unique stone mountain dwelling that has been traced back 140 years, but most likely is much older. In order to ensure proper management of the Bull Run

Mountain Natural Area, in 2010, VOF hired Brian Laposay to serve as the part-time ranger for the 2,500-acre tract. An avid hiker, Laposay is responsible for coordinating BRMNA activities with local partners, enforcing preserve rules, maintaining trails and mapping the area. Delivering inspirational sermons on the gifts and talents of individuals, The Warrenton United Methodist Church guides those in finding their place within the congregation by utilizing their passions in the community. This hospitable congregation has a heartfelt sense of community. Referring to their style as “casual, cool, and Christ-like,” they offer acceptance of one’s place in their journey of faith in a safe environment that is committed to sharing, helping and supporting. The Warrenton United Methodist Church is purpose driven and follows five principles: to connect, grow, serve, share and worship. These are present at five varying services on Sunday, two traditional and three contemporary. A ‘Full Cup Coffee House’ service creates a relaxed atmosphere that includes fresh Nicaraguan coffee that compliments its comfortable seating. An impressive high-energy service will be featured at night with Christian Rock and relevant sermons. “There is a place here where you will fit,” Assistant Pastor Sarah McQueen said. Adding, “Everyone here wants to worship the same God but maybe in a different way.”

ramps. He also helps organize a regular trip to Franklin Park in D.C. to help hand out food and seasonal clothing items. While food and clothing are necessary, the church members have offered prayer and conversation that has developed relationships among those participating. The REACH work camp welcomed over 450 youth to repair homes in Fauquier and Culpeper Counties. There are many bible studies for men, women, couples, young and old that assist those interested in growth through Methodist education. These programs connect classroom education with service projects creating a valuable learning experience for any age. “We have lots of opportunities to be purpose driven. At every age we are meeting for the purpose of serving and reaching our youngest children,” explained Barbara Mueller, the Children’s Ministry Coordinator. Mueller also has a very popular friend that attends church, her border collie Ranger – a favorite of the children.

“You can come and get super involved,” Senior Pastor John S. Chadsey said. “All of our activity is centered on worship which is our primary focus. It is the item that energizes us to do everything else.”

Methodists in Mission (M&M Kids) is for children as young as four to participate in age appropriate activities to help the community, like filling jars with chili ingredients to send to soldiers. Their Sprouts program is for Fourth and Fifth Graders and they collected teddy bears to distribute to nursing homes in the area. The church also runs an instrument program called Instruments for All. They collect used instruments, refurbish them and redistribute them back in to the local schools. Many other programs are available in the area and some outside of our community.

Opportunities to connect with the congregation and to the community are plentiful, with many events and activities lead by active members. Ted Burns, the Purpose Driven Ministries Coordinator, assembles a monthly project in Fauquier to help complete small home repair projects like building accessible

The Sunday School, Preschool and Youth programs provide funds for 148 students to have lunch and breakfast in Nicaragua. They groups have even raised enough money for some transportation. A family within the church also

United Methodist Church ‘Casual, Cool and Christ-like’

purchased a coffee plantation in Nicaragua to help support the local economy by keeping jobs. The fresh brew for the coffee house service is from that plantation. The Warrenton United Methodist Church is located at a dignified brick building with many rooms for activities like Methodist education, preschool, worship services and other community groups. Each nook and cranny of the building is utilized to collect clothing and food for specific community projects. The congregation worships and then works to serve the community. There are plenty of ways to become involved January 2011

through programs as well as participating in the choir, hand bells, or a contemporary band. Sunday Services begin at 8am for the traditional morning prayer, a contemporary service at 9:30am, the “Full Cup Coffee House’ service at 9:35am, as well as a traditional service at 11:00am followed by a high energy Christian Rock service at 5:55pm. When Dr. Josh Jakum tore his ACL during a soccer game, his first thought was, “How am I going to coach my sons’ lacrosse team?” With only a few short months until the season, he set out to find the best orthopedic care. So, he teamed up with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Robert Smith, who previously served with the Baltimore Ravens. The two agreed to a bone-tendon-bone graft surgery. And then came the rehab. Three days a week Dr. Jakum worked to regain his strength and mobility. But on March 12th, he didn’t show up for his therapy. Iadeluca The month of January is named after the Roman god Janus who, like the first month of the year looks both forward and backward. Janus with its two faces looks in both directions. While I prefer not to be considered two-faced, I do liken myself to this god in the sense that I can look backward through most of the 20th Century yet simultaneously I am eagerly looking forward to what the coming century has in store for us. Our memories include not only what we ourselves experience but also the tales told to us by our families. My grandparents spoke to me of Ellis Island where they and 70 million others arrived from Europe in the 19th Century. My father told me of crowds in 1900 shouting “Get a horse” at the rare automobile. He was a member of the Army Signal Corps in France during World War I and later under his tutelage, I became proficient in the Morse Code. He narrowly escaped the Spanish flu in 1918 that killed between 10 and 100 million people. Boyhood memories flood in. There were no supermarkets. We told the grocery man what we wanted, he brought it down from the shelves using a ladder if necessary, and with a pencil he added the total on the brown wrapping paper (this was the receipt) before he tied it together with string. My parents and I listened to the three-foot long Ware Neutrodyne radio with five dials, each

of which had to be on the right number to receive the station. For proper reception, my father had strung an aerial from the radio to a distant tree. In the winter, we heated the home with a coal stove. In the summer, we went to the movie theatres that advertised air conditioning. I remember the first election of Franklin D. Roosevelt when I was 12 years old. Following my high school graduation, I commuted for five years by rail to New York City often coming home with a shirt soiled by the cinders from the steam locomotive. At age 19 came a full summer of fun when I spent my spare time at the 1939 World’s Fair watching with wonder prototypes of television and other appliances common today. Then when I was 21, the radio announcement came on December 7, 1941 that Pearl Harbor had been attacked. Almost 90% of Americans are too young to remember even the ending of World War II in August 1945. Four out of five living Americans were born after that date. As an infantryman recovering from two years of combat in Europe, I celebrated along with all the others the ending of a war that killed 60 million civilians and military personnel. Following the war, I remember looking out of the window of an advertising agency on Madison Avenue in New York City and watching Harry Truman doffing his hat as he campaigned for his second term. Reflecting Continued from page 52 Four-fifths of Americans do not remember Russia’s launching of Sputnik, the first satellite sent into space. As a Scout Executive conducting a nighttime training session on October 4, 1957 I remember watching that little “star” slowly moving from horizon to horizon and listening on our radio to the rhythmic beep – beep – beep. Along with millions of other Americans, I remember the announcement that President Kennedy had been assassinated and the dramatic grief-filled three-day aftermath shown on television. Almost threequarters of living Americans have no memory of this. As I think back through the marvels of the 20th century, it astounds me. The accomplishments during that amazing era and the differences between the lifestyle during my youth and now are phenomenal. I am especially struck by the ever-increasing speed of life. In my youth America had a population of 150 million; now there are 300 million. The world population which was 1 ½ billion is now 6 billion, most of it moving toward urban areas. In my childhood of the 1920s while bathtubs were becoming more existent, showers were not. While cars were common, so were horse and wagons. Life moved at a leisurely pace. World War I was fading into the past and society was adjusting itself to using inventions and developments of the earlier part of the century such as the incandescent bulb and the phone. House calls by physicians were the usual practice whether in cities or in small towns. One month after my ninth birthday came the stock market crash of 1929. As a totally disabled veteran my father received a pension which, while small, sustained us through the

Great Depression. Life slowed down even more than in the previous decade but still unforeseen by the population of that time there was to be a radical change in the lives of most people throughout the world. In rapid sequence, there came events leading toward a war of worldwide proportions. On the last day of August 1939, Hitler ordered an invasion of Poland. Three days later Britain and France declared war against Germany. The United States prepared for an uncertain future. Two years later Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, and within a three-day period, America declared war against both Japan and Germany. My life, along with millions of others in my generation, was never again to be the same. Wars, as horrible as they may be, stimulate the brain of the human being. The term “survival of the fittest” comes to mind. The goal is to stay alive physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. In short order I saw America change from that peaceful “every day is the same” lifestyle to one of innovation. Men and women with creativity and motivation joined the federal government or large corporations. Automakers learned how to develop and manufacture super tanks. Chemical compa-

nies moved from kitchen cleansers to flame throwers. Young men in civilian clothes were asked why they were not in uniform. Although the 20th century was officially born in 1900, it started to mature in 1941 be it for good or evil. Throughout the four years of war and for the remainder of the century, the pace of change accelerated. By the end of the 20th century more technological advances were made than in all of preceding history. Medical researchers presented us with vaccines against measles, mumps, small pox, chickenpox, polio, whooping cough, influenza, diphtheria and tetanus. Families benefited from the development of vitamin supplements, creation of artificial hearts and pacemakers, medical insulin, creation of contraceptives, antibiotics and psychiatric medications, and refinement of blood typing. X-ray use became a powerful diagnostic tool. The public awareness of nicotine danger changed smoking habits. Cancer was put into remission with the use of chemotherapy and/or radiation. AIDS was suppressed. The civil rights movement gradually strengthened. Women began to take over their rightful place in sociReflecting Continued on page 56

Genocides erupted throughout the world as they had been doing for centuries, the details of the Holocaust were made public, and the last recorded lynching of a black person occurred in the United States as late as 1968. Homes went through radical changes with the addition of washing machines, clothes dryers, refrigerators, freezers, automatically stoked oil furnaces, electric kitchen ranges, vacuum cleaners and microwave ovens. Homemakers became accustomed to stainless steel, Velcro, Teflon and other plastics. As the century progressed, we were presented with television, frozen food, computers, the Internet and mobile phones. Even music which saw little change in the first half of the century began to move rapidly from blues to jazz to “big band” to rock and roll which itself split into heavy metal, punk rock and various alternatives. Synthesizers and electronically composed music came into existence. Phonographs of my parents’ time with their 78-rpm records were modified to accommodate 33 1/3 discs, changing over to 8-tracks, cassette tapes and CDs. Like Janus, I stand at a pivotal point. I look back at fourfifths of a century knowing full well that the years ahead of me will be far less than those behind me. Yet – I feel hale and hearty. I still walk two miles almost every day. I see patients almost every hour five days a week. I dance whenever the opportunity presents itself. I am active in the business community. My license plate “ALL-OK” still speaks for my outlook toward life. I live in the present. Simultaneously I am intensely curious about the future. I am convinced that the 21st Century will be as different from mine as the 20thCentury was from all previous generations. A new society is emerging. Its emphasis will be on brain, not brawn. We have moved from the agricultural age of past centuries to the 19th Century industrial age through the 20th Century information age to the conceptual age of the years immediately ahead. The driving force is intellectual. Society will rely on men and women who have global awareness, social skills, digital literacy, sound reasoning, inventive thinking, and who are curious and creative risk takers.

My license plate “ALL-OK” still speaks for my outlook toward life. I live in the present. Society is looking away from those who work with their hands. There is a new mind set. Education pays off. Computer skills are in demand. Health, education and social service needs are high. We are entering a knowledge society. People know more about each other. Information technology will rule the roost. Synthetic intelligence is on the way. There will be problems. Two years from now 20% of the workforce will be over 55. Centenarians will not be unusual. We are moving toward a retirement age of 75+. It will be difficult to find qualified applicants. Unemployment will increase. The gap between the affluent and the poor will widen. Transparency and security needs will clash. I pause and look backward toward the so-called “good old days.” I see my mother using the carpet sweeper while the irons are heating over the stove. Then suddenly I see the landing on the moon. I lose track of the individual years as I try to envision the scope of my life’s growth. I feel the dizzying rush of the 20th Century and find myself counting my past only in decades. I look over the threshold of the future and see a robot straightening up the house and citizens taking joy rides into space. The dizzying pace will not slacken. The signs are here. The next forty years of technological progress will equal or surpass all that transpired in the 20th Century. The end of the 21st Century will be beyond the belief of our current feeble minds. Assuming I was in good health, I wish I could be there to see it.

Civil War 150th Legacy Project Will Visit Fauquier County January 7th and 8th to digitize Civil War-era documents for the Library of Virginia The Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission and the Library of Virginia have partnered to create a state-wide online collection of original Civil War manuscripts that still remain in private hands. The Civil War 150 Legacy Project: Document Digitization and Access focuses on manuscript materials created during the period 1859-1867 that reflect social, political, military, business and religious life in Virginia during the period of the Civil War and the early period of Reconstruction. However, any document from the 1860’s-1899 will be consider if it relates to the daily life of the inhabitants of Fauquier County and the daily challenges. The Library of Virginia is partnering with the Fauquier County Sesquicentennial Committee and Southern Fauquier Historical Society to preserve as many cherished document as possible. Citizens are encouraged to bring original family materials, photographs, letters, diaries, legers, bibles, and manuscripts, to be scanned and included in the Project. No documents will be left with the Library; the owner maintains possession throughout the process and returns home with his most precious items. Scanned materials’ will be made available on the web via the Library of Virginia web site and the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission web site. CW 150 Legacy Project staff will be visiting Fauquier County on January 7th and 8th, 2011. The event will take place from 10a.m. to 8p.m. at the John Barton Payne Building, Warrenton, Va. 58

If time permits a limited number of walk-ins may be accommodated, as scheduling allows. Fauquier Health Fauquier Health Staffer Makes One Change for Health When Linda Davidson arrived here from England 24 years ago she only planned to stay a couple of years, but sometimes life gets in the way, and she remains here today. And that is the way her weight gain happened as well, a little at a time, hardly noticeable at first. Perhaps it was too much American fast food or maybe the stress of adjusting to a new culture; it’s hard to pinpoint any one reason. But when Linda heard about the Make One Change wellness program that Fauquier Health was offering to its employees, she decided it was time to lose those extra pounds. When Linda first read about the program, she thought, “I can’t do this. It is way too much!” But LeAnn McCusker, director of the Fauquier Health Wellness Center (formerly the Fauquier Health LIFE Center), explained, “Make One Change just asks you to commit to changing one aspect of your lifestyle. For 12 weeks you can focus on just one change that will help you be a healthier person. We have lots of options, designed to work for you and your specific situation.” Since then, Linda has lost 28 pounds through Make One Change and is on her way to losing the final 7 that will put her at her goal weight. She is looking and feeling great. She explains, “What I like about Make One Change is it isn’t extreme. There are no foods I have to eat and no foods I can’t eat. I exercise moderately and I stay under 1,600 calories, which is a healthy long-term amount. This is not a crash diet, it is a lifestyle change. I keep a food journal one week every month, which is enough to show me where I can improve and not so much as to have my life revolve around food journaling.” Why does she stick with Make One Change instead of other programs? Linda says, “In addition to the sensible program, I like the upbeat e-mails with tips, recipes and encouraging messages, and the Wellness Center staff are always there to answer my questions.” As an additional motivation, those who finish the 12-week program are eligible for rewards. Eating Healthy AND Saving Money! by Kim Forsten

Each January, many of us find ourselves feeling motivated to make some changes to improve our health—and we feel a little light in the wallet from all of our Christmas spending. Here are some tips to assist you in implementing some strategies to create healthy eating options for you and your family… and you don’t have to break the bank to do it! Tip #1: You MUST plan ahead!

Create a food budget and stick to it.

A multi-step tip for getting the most (and spending the least) out of your grocery visits:

Tip #2: Plan your meals. Use cookbooks, friends, family and the internet to get recipes and meal ideas. Planning ahead saves you time in the long run and means fewer last-minute trips to the grocery store where you might make expensive impulse purchases when you only went for a gallon of milk!

Tip #3: No impulsive eating out! Make sure your plan includes any and all eating-out plans that you have for the week. This means business lunches, lunch dates, eating on the run on busy nights and special occasions. Don’t forget to include this in your budget.

Tip #4: Use what you have. Take a look in your cupboards and your fridge. Use what you can for the upcoming week’s plan to prevent waste each week. While you are taking inventory, get rid of the junk!

u Write out a grocery list and stick to it. u Search high and low (literally) to find less expensive generic or store brands on grocery shelves. Stores place the highest priced brand name items at eye level. Be a savvy shopper! u Fresh foods are found throughout the perimeter of the grocery store. Shop there first to get the majority of your foods. Head to the freezer section next and then fill in the gaps with middle aisles (The middle aisles typically contain highly processed and boxed goods along with expensive snack type foods and sodas. Things you really don’t need! Don’t go there and you won’t be tempted!) u Make sure you have a shopper’s card and select foods that are on sale for the week. Be proud to be a savvy shopper--don’t be afraid or embarrassed to use coupons. u Never go to the grocery store hungry. Impulse purchases are made on an empty stomach.

u Use beans! Beans cost less and pack a powerful nutritional punch. Cut down on the amount of meat in a recipe (saving money in the process) and add beans (which are delicious, nutritious and cost effective). u Buy yogurt in large tubs and portion out to single servings.

u Support your local farmers market for in season fruits and vegetables.

u Switch to skim milk. A change from whole milk to skim milk can save a family of four $8-$10 per week and reduce calories by 5,000 and fat by 500 grams for the family!

u Purchasing out-of-season fruits and veggies in the freezer section is less expensive and still healthy.

u When making cheese purchases, buy low fat and in blocks. (Slices are always more expensive.)

u Shop alone if you can. Kids can get you off track pretty quickly and increase the food bill. However, if they come along, stick to your plan and you will be teaching them good shopping habits along the way.

u Have breakfast for dinner. It’s easy to prep, inexpensive and there are many healthy options.

u Stick with water – sodas and alcohol increase calories AND the bill.

u Order an appetizer or salad as your meal.

u Stick to your weekly plan. Go out only on planned nights/days.

A healthy diet can be affordable. Like anything else worthwhile in life, a little effort goes a long way. Commit to a PRE-planned and healthy eating program for one month. If you follow the suggestions above, you’ll save time and money while bringing yourself and your family one step closer to achieving a healthy lifestyle. Don’t get discouraged when you find yourself falling back to old habits for a day or two – it will happen. Don’t sweat the small stuff, and get back on track the next day. Keep at it and you will soon find yourself very pleased with your accomplishments. Oh, and feeling better inside and out! This search began by visiting the Warrenton Farmers Market weekly and building relationships with the farmers and bakers. “At any time we using 80-95% all Virginia products,” Chef Eisenhauer explained. Relationships between Jesse Straight’s Pastured Poultry, Martin’s Angus Beef Farm, Great Harvest Bread Company, Oak Springs Dairy, Uphill Farm, Sweet Valley Dairy Farm, Sue’s Pies and many more all help create a flavorful Virginia menu. “Our menu changes about four times a year,” Chef Eisenhauer said. Virginia is blessed to have four distinct seasons that Chef Eisenhauer embraces to creatively transform the menu depending on availability. Only a few items that have consistently been on the menu since the restaurant opened almost two years ago, the tasty Lobster Macaroni and Cheese served with garlic bread and the Pulled Smoked Chicken or Pork BBQ Sandwich. Lunches” for those in a hurry but wanting a local lunch. Serving Soups like Chicken and Sausage Gumbo or Vegetarian Chili and fresh salads like a Classic Caesar or a Big Chef Salad with ham, turkey, salami, bacon and a boiled egg. Appetizers include Hummus of the Moment served with celery, cucumber, tomato and grilled pita points, House Chips, and Steamed Mussels topped with parmesan cheese and garlic bread. “Quick Lunches” includes a selection from a Ham and Brie Panini, a Hummus Wrap and a Sloppy Joe made with Martin’s Angus Farm ground beef in a spicy tomato sauce served on a toasted bun. There classic lunch sandwiches include The Italian featuring Pepe Zito’s homemade Italian sausage with sautéed peppers and onions, lettuce, tomato and an herb vinaigrette drizzle, Catfish PoBoy, Portabella Griller and a Spicy Roast Beef Sandwich created from a house-made roast sliced and layered on a crunchy baguette with melted provolone and spicy mayo. Black Bear Burgers come in three sizes: Papa Bear 12 oz, Mama Bear 8 oz, and Baby Bear 4 oz. Each is served on a toasted bun with lettuce, tomato and onion. Additional toppings include five types of cheese as well as sautéed onions, mushrooms, jalapenos, ham or salami. All sandwiches come with your choice of french fries, soup, salad, coleslaw, pasta salad or potato salad. Their Baby Back Ribs are house-smoked and perfectly fork tender, smothered in a Texas-style BBQ sauce served with coleslaw and french fries. Included on the menu are a Crab Cake Dinner, Gnocchi and Winter Vegetables, Shrimp and Sausage Creole and a Vegetarian Spaghetti and Meatballs. The Partnership for Warrenton Foundation would like to thank the entire community for helping to make GumDrop Square such an amazing success this holiday season. The amazing indoor spectacle was visited by an average of 1000 people each of the three weeks it was open and more than 3000 gifts were purchased at Santa’s Secret Shop. Despite the perception that Christmas is becoming too commercial and the children too cynical it was apparent that this old fashioned tradition, which has been a constant in Old Town Warrenton for about two decades, is in no way, shape or form declining in popularity. Parents and children alike flocked into the John Barton Payne Building to stare in awe at the more than one dozen very tall and beautifully decorated and lit Christmas trees, the miniature Main Street old fashioned shop fronts, the gum drop ornaments, garlands, ribbons and antique toys. Oh, and Santa was there, too! Jolly Old Saint Nick spent time with every child who came to see him – there was a sparkle in more eyes than just that big merry elf. The Partnership was truly honored to be a part of so many family’s holiday tradition.

The garlands and lights are barely settled in for their off-season in storage and the Partnership’s new book, Warrenton, Virginia: A Unique History of 200 Years, has already debuted with a bang. The book authored by local historian John Toler, with the help of Cheryl Shepherd and Ann Power has become an instant success. Members of the community have been seeking out copies of the book and hoping to become one of the first to own it. The book was a project put together by The Partnership for Warrenton Foundation as a special celebration of the Town’s 200th birthday. In it readers will find a tremendous amount of history about Warrenton, as well as some interesting facts about some of the families who have called it home for the past two centuries. While there is a tremendous amount of factual information included in Toler’s work, there are also many photos throughout the book of local sites, buildings, people – both recent and historic. Several of the shops in Old Town have agreed to have the book available for sale at their location, including Red Truck Bakery, Town Duck, Natural Marketplace, the Scoti and the Visitors Center. The book is also available through The Partnership for Warrenton’s web site or physical office.

We have four new businesses that have opened recently. Dixie’s Closet, a new thrift store has opened on Falmouth Street. They accept donations of all sorts; they do not turn away anything. The Yes Asian Café is open for business. We sure are getting a lot of choices on Main Street these days. They are selling goods made in different third world countries and helping out the economies and people of these areas at the same time. You will also find goods from some local artists to fill out the inventory. Jessie Straights Pasture Poultry is not exactly new, but I bet many of you have not heard of him yet. He practices sustainable farming and sells to local restaurants and the health conscience consumer. In addition to the pasture chickens and turkeys, you can also buy some of his free foraging pork. In the spring he intends to expand to include grass fed beef and pastured eggs.
