Choose an area to begin, Put your cup inside the shirt right side up, secure a rubber band around the cup rim and hold the shirt tightly in place.

Pick your colors and create a small design in the center of the stretched circle.

Watching It Grow- Step III Using your dropper, drip approximately 10 drops of rubbing alcohol in the center of your design. (We actually used more than 10 to really make the colors spread)

Continue Steps II and III to make as many clusters as you wish! Have fun and cover the whole shirt. We did not do that with this sample. Let your imagination go!!!!

Helpful tips

You may want to put a piece a cardboard inside the shirt so the colors donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bleed from the front to the back. Richard Henry Lee 1732-1794 During the westward migration into Virginia’s Northern Neck Proprietary, settlements often arose at major rural crossroads. In the case of Fauquier Courthouse, later renamed Warrenton, the town got its start from a store, a tavern and a few homes in Prince William County where five main roads met.

The property approved by the governor had been in the Lee family since 1718, and Richard Henry Lee, who Travelers coming from the ports of Falmouth and lived in Westmoreland County, was a large landowner and member of the House of Burgesses, serving from 1758 to 1775. Did Lee influence the decision to have the county seat located on his lands? Perhaps, but the site offered many advantages: excellent topography, easy access, and a location close to the center of the new county. It must also be noted that Lee gave considerable property to the county, including a two-acre site for the first Fauquier County Courthouse and County Jail.

As the county seat, Fauquier Courthouse was on a fast track for growth, as local government and the courts conducted business and held their meetings there and the need for services and accommodations grew. Besides the stores and taverns already there, other businesses would open in Fauquier Courthouse, and more residents would locate in and around the village.

In order to manage this growth, a survey of the town was ordered by R.H. Lee, and completed in 1790 by P. Dumfries to Winchester and points west passed through James Routt. Warrenton Part I: Establishing the County Seat and serving the townspeople

After the establishment of Warrenton, a comprehensive map of the town covering 71 acres was drawn by P. James Routt. The realigned streets and new street grids were laid out on the map.

A New Charter, A New Name By the early 19th century, the business owners and residents of Fauquier Courthouse were ready to take on the responsibilities of running their town, and petitioned the Virginia General Assembly to create a new, official entity. The concept of incorporating towns in Virginia goes back January 2012

to 1680, when the Virginia Assembly passed an Act proposed by Thomas Lord Culpeper. Originally meant to encourage settlers scattered along the Tidewater coast to create new towns, the Act was the forerunner of the legislation codifying incorporation adopted by the Virginia Constitution of 1850. According to Fauquier County, Virginia, the county history published in 1959, the Act established charters granting “… trustees who were vested with the lands expropriated for the town site, to dispose of the latter, and to maintain a proprietary municipal government under direct responsibility only to the Assembly.” The Fauquier Courthouse petition was presented by 68 citizens, who maintained that approving the charter “… would conduce the prosperity and comfort and convenience of the individuals who reside at Fauquier Courthouse, as well as those whose business occasionally requires them to attend at the Courts, or whose wants are supplied from the stores or manufactories at this place…” It was further stated that by having the charter, the necessary planning and regulations to guide the development and operation of the town could be put in place, “…as shall be approved and directed by the legislature, or by the corporation established.” The General Assembly concurred with the petitioners, and the charter was granted on January 5, 1810. At that time, Fauquier Courthouse was renamed Warrenton, in reference to the Warren Academy. It is worth noting that Warrenton was not the first town in Fauquier to be granted such a charter; Rectortown earned that distinction in 1772. The trustees quickly began the work of fulfilling the requirements of the charter. While the statutes governing the trustees and the limitations of their powers under the charter were clear, there were unique issues that had to be addressed, and quickly. One of the first orders of business was to order a survey of

Warrenton’s first public building was the Market House, with a retail farmer’s market on the first floor and the Town Hall upstairs. Built in 1830 and sold to Charity Lodge 27, IOOF in 1847, it is one of Warrenton’s oldest buildings. the town, which was done by P. James Routt in 1811. The 71acre tract specified in the charter was clearly outlined, and a system of street grids – with named streets, many of which still survive today – created over the old roads, most of which we re-aligned. The need for a town-owned, multi-purpose municipal building quickly became apparent, but construction was delayed by the War of 1812 and financial concerns. In March 1830, the trustees purchased the lot on the corner of Main and present-day North Fifth Street from William Bell and Margaret Glassell for $200. With the coming of the railroads in the 1840s, the trustees petitioned the General Assembly to approve a branch line from the Orange and Alexandria Railroad’s main line at Calverton into Warrenton. On March 7, 1851, an Act was passed authorizing the branch line. This pleased the people who wanted rail access, but didn’t want Warrenton to become a “railroad town.”

A number of new town regulations dealing with a wide range of issues were adopted at this time. Under the new regulations, I was unlawful “…to fire any gun, pistol or firearm within the corporate limits; to make any unnecessary noise, cursing, swearing, etc.; to ride or drive at any speed other than an ordinary pace or trot, to injure any pump, hay scale or public burying ground, to keep dead animals on lots in town, and so fourth,” according to historian Lee Moffett, in The Diary of Courthouse Square, published in 1996.

As the war dragged on, most of the businesses in Warrenton shut down as merchandise and supplies grew scarce, and Confederate money became worthless. Town government was virtually powerless during the extended periods of occupation, and although town council meetings were held, albeit infrequently, minutes were not recorded. Perhaps this was done to keep the actions of the town council, which supported the South, secret from the occupation forces. In spite of the desperate times, Mayor Bragg and the remaining councilmen made sincere efforts to address the needs of the town. A meeting was on Nov. 14, 1864, during

Civil War and Reconstruction Businessman Charles Bragg was elected mayor in April 1859, just months before abolitionist John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry. The outbreak of Civil War soon followed, and many Warrenton men, including most of the town’s able-bodied leadership, joined the Southern Cause. Notable among these men were former mayors James Vass Brooke, who organized and led Brooke’s Battery, and John Quincy Marr, who commanded the Warrenton Rifles until he was killed at Fairfax Courthouse on May 31, 1861. While optimism swelled with the Confederate victories during the early months of the war, after the Southern troops abandoned the defensive positions at Centreville in March 1862, Fauquier County was invaded from both the north and south by the Union army. Because of its strategic position, federal forces would occupy Warrenton more than 60 times before the war was over. 16

which citizens tried to come up with ways to relieve the suffering of Warrenton’s poor and displaced before winter, but no notes were left to describe what, if anything was done.

Postwar Recovery The first town council meeting after the war was held on July 31, 1865, but according to Mrs. Moffett in The Diary of Courthouse Square, no minutes were recorded. The council met again on Aug. 23, and learned that Gov. Francis H. Pierpont (whom the federal government had considered the legitimate governor of Virginia during the war) ordered that that an election had to be held for the corporation officers, and that “…said officers were ready to restore their municipal governments.” WARRENTON continued on page 18 Warrenton Lifestyle

The military authorities closely watched the election, in order to ensure that all state and federal laws were followed. Reconstruction had begun, and Warrenton, like the rest of the South, was changed forever. To their credit, Mayor Bragg and the town council cooperated with the federal authorities to resolve the inevitable conflicts. They clearly wanted the Union soldiers to leave Warrenton as soon as possible, and begin rebuilding. Even after the federal troops left town in January 1866, there were problems. A particular concern was the fair treatment and protection of recently emancipated citizens. A report made in September 1866 by Lt. W. S. Chase, head of the Freedmen’s Bureau in Warrenton, described a violent incident in Warrenton, and the town’s response. “On the night of Sept. 5, 1866, Eddie Wooden and Robert Martin, two bad characters, attacked two freedmen, and Wooden shot one of them …Mayor Bragg, hearing the disturbance, hurried to the spot and was knocked down by Martin. Both escaped. Warrants were issued for their arrest. I believe that the civil authorities of this county are disposed to deal fairly with the Freedmen as a general rule. There are a few magistrates that seem afraid to do their duty, but I think even these are improving.”

As economic conditions in the town and surrounding areas slowly improved, the town council was able to resume some of the infrastructure and public safety projects that had been suspended during the war. Charles Bragg served as mayor until 1869, when R. Taylor Scott was elected. There was still much to be done, but townspeople had emerged from the survival mode, and were looking toward the future. In October 1870, the town purchased the old Methodist (North) church at the corner of present-day Main and N. Fourth Street from W. H. Gaines for $2,200. After some remodeling, it served as the Town Hall and other public uses for more than 100 years. Turning their attention to education, in 1872 Mayor John Rixey and the Warrenton Town Council moved the “free school” that was operating in the old Episcopal church building on Alexandria Pike (site of present-day First Baptist Church) to the Town Hall. The town purchased a lot on Academy Hill for $600, and built a four-room school schoolhouse there that served until the county public school system was established some years later. Another important initiative that took place in the 1870s was the consolidation of the 600 unmarked Confederate graves in the Warrenton Cemetery into one gravesite. A group of local women formed the Fauquier Memorial Association and took on the task, with active support of the town. The remains were brought together in one site, and the monument honoring them dedicated in 1877. Efforts to improve the appearance and security in Warrenton continued, with new sidewalks and gas-lit streetlamps installed in the business district. A town sergeant was hired and additional funds allocated for firefighting equipment, which was stored under the Courthouse steps. In early 1894, the town council voted to have a new Municipal Building housing town offices and the fire department to be built on the site of the old Waters Tavern on Courthouse Square.

In 1870, the Town of Warrenton purchased the former Methodist church building at the corner of present-day Fourth and Main streets for use as its Town Hall. This is the thirteenth in a series of articles about local churches and houses of worship. The purpose is to introduce you to the distinct features of each congregation, their philosophy and atmosphere. We believe that churches, temples, synagogues, etc are some of our best community centers. As you read about them each month we hope you will find one that interests you and your family. This month, we take a look at Our Savior Lutheran Church.

Lutheran Church L iving in God’s grace through a strong communit y. Privately settled right outside of the town, a beautiful brick church sits quietly on sizable grounds welcoming worshippers. Our Saviour Lutheran Church has provided worship services and outreach activities through the congregation’s support of our community. This large fellowship is filled with a diverse population of individuals and families who appreciate learning, enjoy worshipping, have the need to serve locally as well as globally and want to continue to grow with one another. For almost a decade the leadership of Co-Pastor Debbie Frye and Co-Pastor James Fore has continued to sustain the churches mission of living in God’s grace by creating a strong worshipping community. Our Saviour Lutheran Church offers a choice of weekend services on Saturday and Sunday. Friendly smiles and warm embraces greet regulars and visitors alike at the church doors passing out bulletins and children’s bulletins for the service. The bulletins outline the services for the day while the children’s version is designed for a clear and simple understanding of the current message for their own worship and is targeted for ages four years old to fifth grade. For the very young, bags filled with quiet toys are offered to occupy the children during the service. Ushers politely escort families and friends to open seating in the large sanctuary. Dancing through the pews, musical notes from the organ, choir and classic liturgical music inspire and envelop all present. Saturday evening service provides an alternate worship time with a twist to Lutheran tradition. This is an excellent January 2012

service to attend if you are seeking a place of worship in a more casual atmosphere. The ushers have the night off. But, just as with the Sunday service, hospitable greeters receive fellow worshippers and pass out bulletins and toy bags. Clergy and assistants de-robe and those attending are dressed less formal. Typically lasting an hour, this service is effortlessly followed with the use of the hymnal and bulletin. An intimate group of singers, a keyboard, a guitar and an assortment of other instruments replace the use of the standard organ, choir and classical music. Once a month a fellowship gathering is included after the service and is usually a potluck or something fun like a chili-cook off. This once-a-month meet up is available to continue to build relationships within families and the church. At the conclusion of each service this husband and wife Pastor twosome openly address the attendees making themselves available and relatable. This commitment is a sign of their dedication

to creating an accepting and safe place for everyone who walks in their doors. “Christ’s Love, Our Service’ is evident in the work the congregation does within the church itself, our community and globally. They work to focus their thoughts and behaviors to show their love for Christ by motivating believers and those looking for guidance. Full LUTHERAN continued on page 52 51

of active and instructional ministries ranging from children, youth, men, women and adult, there is a place for everyone looking to connect. Those with a passion for music can join one of the music ministries that support concerts, worship teams, choir and bell choir. The Care Givers ministry has an enthusiasm of personally touching the lives of those in need. Whether it is making a special visit to a member, sending a personal card or making a phone call these well wishers hold a very important role within the church. They continue to reach out by providing car rides, prescription pick up, visiting a family member or assisting with other various care needs while sharing the love of God. The church also has a prayer shawl, a prayer chain, a funeral

meal, fellowship and small groups ministries that give their members a place to experience God’s love in various areas and places on their faithful journey. Throughout the year Our Savior Lutheran Church participates in ‘Faith in Action’ projects allowing individuals to unite with the church family in representing the love for God with Christian service. In January the church takes part in a 30 Hour Famine and the funds received go toward World Vision. They also collect coats, hats, gloves and blankets to be distributed to local organizations in need. During the year they work with the free clinic, collect school supplies, gather supplies for the Lutheran World Relief project, distribute food, assemble cleaning supplies for the Haven, and travel to Hurley, Virginia to help develop the community. Mission is equally as important to Our Saviour Lutheran Church and their reach is felt internationally. Annually they support a Papua, New Guinea project. Where their efforts are to extend generosity and unconditional love to the people while sharing the experience of baptism, the Word of God and building a Christian based community. Our Saviour Lutheran Church is located at 6194 Dumfries Road next to P.B. Smith Elementary School. Join them for a Contemporary Service on Saturday evening at 5:30pm with message, music and meaning in a casual presentation. Each Sunday two Traditional Services are offered at 8:00am and 10:30am. The Nursery is available from Sunday 8:00am to Noon. They offer Sunday school classes for all ages beginning at 9:15 am. Fauquier Health One Small Change - One Big Difference Last January the Fauquier Health Wellness Center introduced the Make One Change Challenge to the community. The philosophy: While unrealistic health goals can be overwhelming and lead to failure, focusing on one change at a time can put success within reach. Make One Change encourages participants to focus on one of five improvements in their health: weight loss, stress management, smoking cessation, healthy eating or physical activity for 12 weeks. The program worked and success rates skyrocketed. After the program, many stayed on the path they established and continue to see progress. Maintaining a healthy weight, eating correctly, exercising and not smoking are the well established pillars of good health; their benefits are a given. The value of stress management, though, is often overlooked or underestimated. Joyce Kaminski was an active woman, but she was overweight. One pretty fall day, Joyce and her husband were on an afternoon hike in the Shenandoah Mountains when Joyce suddenly felt the first chest pains of a heart attack. Luckily, the attack was mild and served as a warning. Joyce’s doctor steered her toward Fauquier Health Wellness Center, where she lost the excess weight and joined the Make One Change stress management program. She learned that stress had contributed to her excess weight, and both the stress and excess weight contributed to her heart attack. Joyce has lost 60 pounds and has learned how to take charge of stress. The program was an eye-opening experience for Joyce. “I knew I was tense, but I didn’t realize the hidden effects of stress on my body.” Stress can be a key factor in depression, diabetes, multiple anxiety disorders, ulcers, high blood pressure, obesity and heart attacks. Hal McCarty and Marlene Hahn were an upbeat, healthy-looking couple. It came as a surprise when they learned that there was a problem with his heart. When Marlene suggested that stress might be a contributing factor, he was reluctant to accept it at first, but then realized she was right. Just as they were about to plunk down a large amount of cash to attend a famous stress management program in California, they learned about the Make One Change program right here in

Marlene Hahn and Hal McCarty, Fauquier Health Wellness Center members Warrenton. It was life-changing for them both. Hal says, “I am in a better place. I am able to deal with things that catch me off guard. I am more grounded.” Hal has learned that, “No matter how much or how little stress you think you have, the toll it takes on you is always worse than you think, and the effects can be devastating.” Marlene agrees. “Stress hits us all in different ways, at different times, so we all need different tools. Hal and I both benefit from regular meditation, which we learned during the Make One Change sessions. I love yoga for stress relief, while Hal focuses on identifying the stress factors – he takes a mindful approach. And when Hal recognizes that he’s stressed, he uses physical exercise to lessen its effects.” Hal and Marlene are now also watching what they eat and exercising, but they plan to do the stress management program again this year. “There was so much to learn that it is hard to take it all in the first time, and the program lead, Dottie Williams, RN, does a fantastic job.”

My intake interview of a new patient, whether male or female, includes three key questions near the beginning. Have you, as either a child or adult, ever been physically abused, emotionally abused, or sexually abused? The answer is “yes” more often than might be expected. Sometimes the patients, sorting through their memories of conflicts, are not quite sure whether they would describe those events as abusive or not. As the intake continues and the patients talk about the details, it becomes evident, at least to this psychologist, that abuse is the appropriate word. When asked if the patient had ever undergone therapy for such abuse, the answer was almost always “never.”

Gender inequality has existed across most cultures since recorded history although violent male dominance was not always defined as abuse. Hundreds of years before the birth of Christ during the reign of Romulus in Rome, wife beating was accepted and condoned. By law a husband was held liable for crimes committed by his wife. To protect the husband from harm caused by his wife’s actions, he was therefore permitted to physically discipline her. Throughout the 20th Century societal changes on behalf of women progressed rapidly from a historical point of view but agonizingly slow as seen by those looking for legal changes.

Change takes place partly because a culture modifies itself and partly because laws are passed. Third century physician and philosopher Sextus Empiricus coined the phrase “The mills of the gods grind slow but exceedingly fine.” Whether determined by gods or by lawmakers, forward movement preventing domestic violence in America crawled from one Congress to another. How is domestic violence defined? Does there have to be physical injury? Does it have to be one’s spouse? Does a onetime incident count? The U.S. Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) defines domestic violence as a “pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is

used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner.” The definition adds that domestic violence “can happen to anyone regardless of race, age, sexual orientation, religion, or gender.” Abusers use numerous tactics to exert power over their spouse or partner but regardless of the method, there is but one purpose – to gain and maintain control over the victim. Domestic violence comes in many forms often starting in subtle quiet ways such as withholding vital information or doing something to make the victim feel diminished or embarrassed. Later there may be thinly veiled attempts to humiliate, falsely accuse, or manipulate the victim privately or publicly. Instead of a direct approach, the abuser may blackmail the victim by harming others. Early on physical abuse may not take place but there may be verbal abuse, with or without profanity, aimed at undermining the victim’s selfworth or self esteem. There may be constant criticism or name calling. Conflicting actions or statements may take place designed to confuse and create insecurity in the victim who may begin to question herself or even believe that they are imagining the abuse or that it is their fault. An often misunderstood form of abuse is sexual abuse where force or threat is used to obtain participation in unwanted sexual activity. Even if that person is a spouse or intimate partner with whom consensual sex has previously occurred, such activity is considered legally to be domestic violence. The recession has played a big role in rising rates of domestic violence. Economic downturns are not friendly to couples who are struggling financially, especially when children are involved. The National Institute of Justice has found that when unemployment rates go up among men, so does violence against women.

Disputes over family necessities or bills to be paid become nasty. If the victim leaves the perpetrator, she may be stunned by the extent to which abuse has taken away her autonomy. Victims often lack specialized skills, education, and training, as well as having several children to support. Victims usually have very little money of their own and few people on whom they can rely. Surveys indicate that one out of every three homeless women are homeless due to leaving a domestic violence relationship. Physical violence, as generally recognized by the public, implies conflicts that escalate to arguments and then to violence. They can be frequent and can be life threatening. There are basically two types of men who create such situations. One is the man who is psychopathic and has violent tendencies. The other is the man who is emotionally dependent on the relationship. Forceful efforts are often used to isolate the victim, to keep her from contacting friends or family. The perpetrator may fluctuate between sudden rages and false joviality or may present a different face to the public. Some of the results of physical violence may include lacerations, internal bleeding, bruises, broken bones and head injuries which require medical attention or hospitalization. Some chronic health conditions are linked to domestic violence such as irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, and migraines. If the victim is pregnant, there is a risk of miscarriage, pre-term labor and injury to or death of the fetus. In addition to physical problems, victims who live with perpetrators have high amounts of stress, fear, and anxiety. Depression is common. Even after termination of the relationship, 60% of the victims meet the diagnosis of clinical depression. Victims have flashbacks, exaggerated startle responses and nightmares. There is a greater increased risk of suicide. These are experienced

for a long span of time after the victim has left the dangerous situation. Perhaps the saddest aspect of the domestic violence picture is the effect on children. This includes not only violence against the children themselves but the psychological injury inflicted on them as they observe their mother being abused. A child who is exposed to domestic abuse during upbringing will suffer in developmental growth. An amazing figure of 3.3 million children witness domestic violence each year in the United States. Some fathers may purposely abuse the mother in front of the child or teach their children to harshly criticize their mothers. There is a strong correlation between abuse and neglect in childhood and perpetrating domestic violence and sexual abuse in adulthood. Couples therapy and treatment for violence should not be considered one and the same. A competent therapist concerned about domestic violence should first focus on the safety of the victim, assessing specific risk factors, and recognizing the power differences between the batterer and the victim. He or she should know the community resources and realize the common difficulties in seeking legal aid. One must be careful not to define violence as a couples problem. It can, however, give warning signs that the abuser is at risk to lose control. In couples therapy the victim is likely to be afraid to report honestly. The batterers report is likely to be minimized. Working with abusers stirs deep feelings and this might cause more violence after therapy has stirred issues. It is important to pay attention to the victim’s safety outside the therapy office. Couples therapy can be successful if the differences do not fit a pattern of abuse and the batterer, who committed the act only once, takes full responsibility and is willing to seek treatment. It is important that the batterer comply as reported privately by the victim. Successful therapy includes a signed contract of refraining from discussing 64

There should also be a safety plan for the batterer in which he holds a list of what for him are triggers, a list of calming activities and a support person he can contact. Nation wide, individual therapy for batterers has a low rate of success – approximately 24%. Many abusers continue to be manipulative, controlling and threatening even after a number of therapy sessions. As my patients sort through their memories, physical and/or emotional abuse at the hands of their parents often come to the fore. A significant number of these patients indicate that as teenagers they could not wait to “get out of the house.” Not knowing any other type of role model, they often found a relationship with a person as dysfunctional as their parent.

It is not uncommon for a female patient to come to my office for help citing anxiety and/or depression but not mentioning the abuse they were experiencing. This is sometimes because their partner has told her she will be killed if she ever leaves the relationship. Victims often feel as if they do not own themselves. They feel that their significant other has nearly total control over them and their response is often eating disorders and drug or alcohol abuse. Across the nation the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Program states unfortunately that people have reported an increase in police negligence when it comes to responding to domestic violence calls.

During the recent board of supervisors election campaign, every candidate stressed his or her support for business growth. A few elections ago, such rhetoric would have raised eyebrows and perhaps disqualified an overeager supervisor wannabe. Fauquier’s board has a tradition of looking suspiciously at those with briefcases and ambitious plans. “The Great Recession” has changed things a bit, however. Tax revenues have fallen as local government expenses have risen, with new schools, parks and libraries. Health insurance costs, in particular, have hammered Fauquier’s budget. Lost jobs and homes also have influenced perceptions. And, everyone understands that new “rooftops” cost more in services than they produce in taxes. Conversely, businesses and farms produce net tax revenue. As we hang new calendars, everyone anxiously wonders whether 2012 might bring significant economic improvement. In Fauquier, most economic indicators — including sales tax revenue, employment, home prices, bankruptcy filings and home foreclosures — have improved modestly, according to a Dec. 14 county government report. The two new county supervisors — Lee Sherbeyn (R-Cedar Run District) and Chris Granger (R-Center District) — won last fall with significant backing from business interests. Neither wants to “Fairfax” Fauquier, but Mr. Sherbeyn and Mr. Granger speak plainly about making it easier for businesses to operate here. With the county’s newly-adopted “business incentive program” and a clear desire for action, perhaps Fauquier gradually will achieve better balance in a community where the commuting lifestyle dominates. We’ll see . . . . On to the news. In Warrenton, the new year will bring redevelopment of at least two, high-visibility parcels on Broadview Avenue. After months of delays in 2011, Pennsylvania-based Wawa will open a new convenience store in April on the Route 211 corner where Joe Jacoby operated his ChryslerJeep dealership years ago. Meanwhile, McDonald’s will build a new fastfood restaurant to replace its four-decade-old structure at Broadview and Roebling Street. Will vacant properties on the commercial strip get similar treatment? McKinsey Development, a marketing communications firm at Vint Hill, has acquired Flash Point Communications in Warrenton. Flash Point Founder David Henrickson joins McKinsey Development as its newest partner and creative director. McKinsey also recently promoted Michelle Winner, a veteran graphic designer, to partner. Piedmont Deals (www.piedmontdeals.com) launched recently in Warrenton. Like Groupon and Living Social, it offers deep discounts on goods and services to those who register and purchase coupons on the website. Simply Pure Products, which makes and sells all-natural healthcare and beauty products, recently moved to Vint Hill. The new location expands manufacturing capacity by 500 percent and has a staffed showroom. Local firms have gotten nice media play lately. Thomas Heath featured SiteWhirks, a Warrenton web development company, in his “Value Added” business column in The Washington Post on Nov. 28. The Huffington Post on Dec. 15 featured Brian Noyes’ diary about a busy week at his Red Truck Bakery in Warrenton. Country Chevrolet owner Andy Budd delivered a moving keynote address at the Greater Warrenton Chamber of Commerce’s second annual member dinner Dec. 7 at Fauquier Springs Country Club.
