From The Publisher
welcome twenty-thirteen. I am fired up about 2013! Exciting things are happening all around us, and we get to be part of it here in Warrenton through our magazine. Our team joins me in thanking all of you who read our publication and advertise to our community every month. We are humbled by your support. This magazine does not accept advertising from businesses outside of our tax base, something no other publication has dared to do. No Culpeper, Fairfax, Loudoun or Manassas ads. Our loyalty lies here. For the sixth consecutive year, we have dedicated many pages to a directory featuring Warrenton businesses plus others Fauquier County advertisers of The Warrenton Lifestyle magazine at www.warrentonbusinessdirectory.com. Thanks to McKinsey Development, who designed and created the online searchable version of our directory. As our merchants continue to send us their 25 keywords linked to their listing, you can go to our site, type in keywords (like ‘shoes’, ‘wine’ or ‘money’) and get a listing of every business with those keywords. Also, citizens can search by category or company name. For example, are you looking for someone to do your hair? There are no less than 23 businesses in the Town of Warrenton that cater to haircutting needs.
Our goal is to make it easier for you to shop the fine stores and services that make Warrenton a wonderful place. Shop our local merchants and watch the rewards come back to you in multitudes. More than a dozen Warrenton residents will be traveling to Terrier Rouge, Haiti again in the upcoming weeks. I will be leading a group with Stan Parkes from the Rotary Club of Warrenton, members of the Northern Haiti Hope Foundation including Center District Supervisor Chris Granger while Pastor Carrie Evans leads her group from Warrenton Presbyterian Church. We will be visiting and working at a school, clinic, orphanage and in remote villages. We are bringing funds and people from our community and extending the generous hand of the Piedmont region to those in desperate need in other places. Look for updates on our trip online or in future issues. Current information can be found at www.northernhaitihope.org. Holly and I personally welcome your comments and suggestions. On behalf of all of us here at The Warrenton Lifestyle Magazine and Piedmont Press & Graphics, we wish you a prosperous and wonderful New Year.

Character
Jim Carson:
Built to Last by George Rowand
Jim Carson confesses to caring deeply about the place he calls home, Fauquier County. “I love living and working here,” he said. “I love what we have here. I love Old Town Warrenton. I love the fact that I’ve got a 12 minute commute to work. I love the fact that we’re a part of the community.” Still, the president of Carson-Ashley & Associates, LLC is blunt about what he experiences as he tries to work with the county government on land use issues.
Carson, completing a Century Bike Ride for Team in Training at Dead Horse Point State Park in Moab, Utah. This place is famous for the final scene of Thelma & Louise in addition to it's spectacular beauty.
“I just had a conversation about how we can do things better here in the county, and they were talking in terms of our development patterns,” Carson stated. “For all our idealistic views of how we want this county to turn out, how we want it to look, and how much we appreciate what we have, [yet] if you look at what’s being built, it’s not attractive. Subdivisions here are no different and probably are not as good as we would see in Loudoun County or Prince William. They don’t have the amenities, they don’t have the architecture, they don’t have the landscaping. For all our talk about great vision for what goes on here, we don’t get it.”
Riding the Wave Carson, a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, said that when he finished college, employment opportunities for civil engineers in Pittsburgh or nearby in Pennsylvania were bleak.
“I’m from Hanover, ‘The Snack Food Capital of the World,’” he said with a laugh, “and when I finished college, there just were no jobs around. In Johnstown, for example, the unemployment rate was 22.5 percent, the highest in the nation.” So, he followed his mother, who had been transferred to Arlington by her employer. “So I ended up coming to Virginia, and I caught the wave,” he explained. “I applied for a job in Fairfax City and things took off. The firm had about 35 people when I joined and grew to 125.” After awhile, however, that firm went under in the recession at the end of the 1980s, and Carson got another opportunity. He went to Culpeper and started a company with two others. “The economy was terrible, and we needed to find something to do, so we started Benchmark Engineering and Surveying in Culpeper,” he said. “I worked there for about six years. It was good experience for me because I was in my late 20s as an engineer, doing all sorts of things, but it wasn’t quite right for me. And then James H. Harris’ business – James H. Harris and Associates – wanted to get out of the business, and I chased after that. On Christmas Eve, 1996, we signed the agreements and exchanged the money, so I’ve been here in Warrenton for the last 16 years.”

A Sporting Endeavor Going head-to-head against the ordinances and regulations regarding development in the county often has been difficult, Carson said. The process used to affect him a lot more than it does now. “When I was younger, I’d be angry and screaming and yelling, but now, it’s just good sport,” he confessed with a laugh. It’s creative. You use your brain. You negotiate. You compromise. For us, it’s a creative process and it’s a political process, and it’s a problem-solving process. So in many ways, it’s fun to work here, but it can be frustrating.” Now the chair of the Business Advisory Committee, a group appointed by the board of supervisors to offer opinions on economic development matters, Carson said that he has some ideas about changes that he thinks would make the process better. “The ordinances have to reflect our vision, and our plans have to reflect our vision, and we’re not there. I think you throw them out now and start with something new.” One element of the process, in particular, is an impediment to business growth in the county, Carson feels.

“I have talked for years about how special exceptions kill new business development in this county,” he said. “If you’re a business person and you come to the county and say that you want to open a business here, the county says, ‘Oh, we’d love to have you, and you need to file a site plan and you need to file a special exception.’ And people say, ‘What’s a special exception?’ And the county says, ‘Because of your use, we want to make sure that properly fits into our vision of the county. And it can take anywhere from six to 12 months, and at the end of that process, you may or may not be approved, or you may be approved, but it’s a conditional approval, and you may not like the conditions. They may be unpalatable, in which case you might decide to not do the project anyway.’ So, as a business owner, you say, ‘Okay, you’re telling me that if I want to move my business here, I might be waiting for approval for up to a year, and at the end of that year, you can’t assure me that I can do my

business in the manner I hope to do it.’ It’s not hard to figure out why they may not want to stick around.” Carson thinks that what Fauquier should be focused on creating mixeduse developments. “Natural land-planning standards for the last 50 years have been that we segregate uses,” he said. “We live here, we work there, we shop over there, so we’re always in our cars, and there’s no community there. Mixed-use communities are walkable, live-work type of environments which is what we say we would like here, and what most land planners these days have been saying is ideal. People live there, and they walk there and work there, and they know their neighbors, and that’s the kind of place that creates a community.” “I think if you look at Prince William and Loudoun, they’re just doing a fancier version of suburban sprawl,” he added. “If you go and look at their developments, they’re basically shopping centers and business-centric areas with a sprawl of houses around it. That’s not what mixed-use really means.”

The Year of Jim Carson turned 50 this year, and he decided to do a number of challenges to celebrate that milestone. “Let’s see, in January, I did the Polar Bear Plunge into the Potomac River,” he recalled, “then I ran the Ugly Mudder in February, which is a trail run in Pennsylvania. In March, I ran my first 5k in 25 years, the Molly’s Irish Pub Wearing O’ The Green fundraising 5k. In June, I went to Lake Tahoe and did a century bike ride around Lake Tahoe, which was spectacularly beautiful. A couple of weeks later, I went to the White Mountains and did a hut-to-hut trip for three days. August, we went to Costa Rica for my wife’s birthday. In September, I did a century bike ride in Moab, Utah, and then I tried to compete a super hike, which was 28.5 miles, but I only got to 21. I was beat, and there was a huge storm imminent, and I said, ‘No mas.’ A couple of weeks later, I went out to the Grand Canyon, and we did a rim-to-rim hike. You have to get off the rim and get down into

the canyon. You go down in it, and it keeps revealing itself to you. It was aweinspiring. I struggled getting back out of it. It took me awhile.” A couple of the events were inspired by a tragedy in Carson’s life, the death of his son Devin by leukemia before he reached the age of seven. “He never caught a break,” Carson said. “When he was first diagnosed, he had an 80 percent chance of survival. When he relapsed 14 months later, it went down to 40 percent. They found a match for him in a bone marrow transplant, and they introduced the new stem cells. When they did the test six months later, he still had 18 percent of his own marrow. I said, ‘That sounds pretty good, 82 percent her marrow and 18 percent his,’ and they said, ‘No, that’s not good at all.’ So we had one last good summer together, but the writing was on the wall, and the leukemia kicked back in, and it went pretty quickly from there. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.” Looking for a way to turn his grief into something positive, Carson joined Team in Training, which is connected to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
and they train you for endurance events … marathons, half-marathons, triathlons … in my case, it was century bike rides,” Carson explained. “Over the past 15 months, I’ve done three century bike rides, and I’ve raised just a little over $33,000 from this little community I live in, which is pretty spectacular. I’m going to Montauk, New York in the spring, and between now and then, I’m going to do a half-marathon double ... two half-marathons in DC, one in March, and one in April. “It’s been so much fun,” he added. “I call it fitness, fundraising and friendship. That’s what keeps me coming back. I’ve made all these great friends. We’ve spent all these hours together, we all share a common bond. It’s a national organization with chapters all over the country. It gives me some purpose. It doesn’t fill the hole. I tell people it gives me something positive to do with it, but there’s still a hole.” Those interested in donating to Jim Carson’s Team in Training and to the goal of defeating cancer may contact Jim at jcarson@carson-ashley.com

HEALTH FROM THE OUTSIDE IN
12
We all know that we are “what we eat” and manifest what we think. If we want vibrant health and energy, we pay attention to the fuel we put in our bodies and the patterns of thought we habituate. But did you also know that our bodies absorb and integrate into our tissues everything we put on our skin? Pharmaceutical companies know this, as evidenced by the advent of transdermal methods of drug delivery. Research has shown that the average woman applies more than 200 chemicals to her skin during the course of a day. In the natural health arena, we promote awareness and “big picture understanding” with the phrase “if you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin.” Just breathing has become hazardous to your health these days as well. The air in our homes is filled with fumes from petrochemical solvents and materials added to cleaners, not to mention the everyday items we sit on, walk on, sleep on and wear. Used over long periods of time, these chemicals severely compromise your health. Even commercial candles, air fresheners and scents contain lead and synthetics that affect your respiratory and immune system. I want to inspire you to be wise enough to stop what you are currently doing and choose organic, non-toxic, biodegradable products to incorporate into your life. It’s that simple. In your commercial facial, nail, hair and body products you will find: aluminum, parabens, mineral oils, paraffin, petrolatum, sodium laurel or sodium laureth sulfate, acrylamids, propylene glycol, phenol carbolic acid, dioxane, toluene, DEA, PEG, polysorbates, ethoxylated alcohols, coal tar and synthetic fragrances and more. Your commercial laundry and cleaning products contain chlorine, ammonia, diethylene glycol, chlorinated phenols, phenols, formaldehyde, benzene, petroleum solvents, perchloroethylene, butyl cellosolve, to name just a few. Even cellulose sponges are impregnated with triclosan and other synthetic disinfectants. Some of the effects these chemicals can have on your health include: hormone-disrupting qualities that cause immune dysfunction (cancers), clogged pores and buildup of toxins, cellular development slow-down that create earlier signs of aging, a chemical combination that may become a nitrosamine-a potent carcinogen, mammary tumors, dermatitis, skin irritation, kidney and liver problems, circulatory collapse, paralysis, convulsions, coma, death from respiratory failure (phenol carbolic acid), anemia, lowered blood cell count, liver or kidney damage, and potential danger to a developing fetus. The carcinogenity of some of these chemicals has been confirmed by the National Cancer Institute and the studies. Let’s look at some of the effects of what is lurking under your kitchen counter, your mop closet and all over your home: respiratory and circulatory system irritants, suppression of the nervous system, liver and kidney damage, mucous membrane damage, carcinogenic (cancer-causing) activity, and bone marrow damage - just to name a few. There are thousands of other chemicals, some so dangerous that they are found on Warrenton Lifestyle
SmileS are for Sharing,
lists of chemicals associated with Superfund toxic waste sites and in the toxins section of the U.S. Clean Air and Water Acts. Government regulations allow virtually any ingredient to be used in the manufacturing of products that we use daily. The regulations have been focused in the more economically driven and lobbied arenas such as food and drugs. Other countries have banned many of these chemicals. You need to research and choose for yourself. If the word “research” gives you a headache, consider shopping in quality natural health food stores where the discrimination and education is provided for you. Health food stores even have natural sponges you can disinfect yourself and candles that don’t pollute the air. Whole Foods type stores are popping up all around us and catering to a wide range of folks. The sophisticated mind pays attention, and your innate intuition will guide you to the truth. Open up and let your natural wisdom speak to you to understand the correlation between pollutants and disease. You will start noticing more articles, magazines, media reports, etc. that touch on the trend of how much commercialization and industrialization have compromised our health and quality of life. You will see many more people moving towards a healthier lifestyle. In fact, you can even find commercial businesses such as housecleaning companies, dry cleaners and such that use “green” ingredients, promoting their businesses as being environmentally friendly. Look at the “cautions” on the labels of commercial products, notice the warnings “danger,” “poison,” “keep away from children and pets,” “flammable,” “vapors harmful” etc. and their ramifications. For those of you would like more detailed information and scientific studies, you can just Google it! There is much you can do to minimize the effects of these harmful products. When it is time to replace carpets, cloth furniture and bedding, investigate cleaner options. Replace all commercial household products as well as toxic cosmetics, bath and body products with cleaner, sustainable alternatives. If inclined, you can make cleaning and body products from scratch. If not, the healthy alternatives are in your health food stores everywhere. As for situations and products you come across that are unavoidable, don’t worry about them and be happy that you have cleaned up your act, your life and the lives around you by doing what is possible. You’ve got to follow that dream…
By John T. Toler
Warrenton man and his family were pioneers in NASCAR racing During a long and busy life, Arthur Landon “Al” Gore, 94, of Warrenton, has done many things. A combat veteran of World War II, he was trained as a Navy Seabee (Construction Battalion), and served his country in the Pacific Theater. After returning from the war, Al resumed a 40-plus year career in construction, and was involved in some of the most familiar, large-scale development projects, including the Dulles Air Traffic Control Center in Leesburg and several schools, bowling alleys and shopping centers in the D.C. Metropolitan area. Since the early 1950s, Al has been involved with the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR), and with members of his family, has operated two speedways/drag strips in Virginia: Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, and Eastside Speedway in Waynesboro.
the history of Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas, which he built in 1952, and Eastside Speedway in Waynesboro, which he acquired in 1960.
Wartime service and the ‘racing bug’ Al Gore was the son of W. L. O. Gore (1879-1979), a native of Amissville. He remembers his father as multi-talented, learning such trades as carpentry, mechanics and blacksmithing. He was also an astute businessman. W.L.O. worked for the Ford Motor Co. in Detroit, and served on Henry Ford’s pit crew the one year Mr. Ford was into auto
racing. He later bought a new 1922 Ford truck chassis from the factory, built the body, and drove it home. Restored about 15 years ago, the vintage truck is still owned by the family. Al got into the construction trades in Northern Virginia in 1931 at age 13, and in 1937, married the former Margaret Wright (1919-1992). In August 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. “I made one mistake,” he recalled. “By then, I had a wife and three kids at home.” His Seabee unit was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division and the 3rd Air Wing. Upon reaching Saipan, they were assigned to build a field kitchen on a beach that had not yet gore continued on page 46
Al Gore’s brother Wally was an expert mechanic and engine builder, and won many races in the 1940s and 1950s in cars like this 1940 Ford coupe.
As one of NASCAR’s pioneers, Al has seen sanctioned auto racing grow from small regional affairs to America’s biggest spectator sport, and along the way, met and worked with some of NASCAR’s most famous drivers and promoters. He was voted into the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Hall of Fame in 1997, and the East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame in 2002. Now retired, Al enjoys a quiet life in the home he built in North Wales Estates in 1982. He still mows his large yard, and enjoys visits by his sons and their families – Dickie and Bobby, who live in Florida; Lanny, of Richmond; and Gary, of Waynesboro. Al’s home and downstairs office are filled with NASCAR and racing memorabilia. He has a collection of photo albums covering 44

been secured from the Japanese. They took enemy fire until an Army flamethrower unit cleared the caves above them. The Seabees then took part in the invasion of Okinawa, where they were tasked with building two airstrips. While on Okinawa, Mr. Gore suffered a severe back injury. Initially treated on Guam, he was put on the hospital ship USS Hope, which brought him to San Francisco. He was then taken to the Naval hospital at Annapolis, where after surgeries and an extended recovery, was discharged and came home. Back in Virginia, Al was bitten by the auto racing bug. His brother Wally was a gifted mechanic, and had built and raced a cutdown Ford roadster with great success. Witnessing the inadequacies of the primitive racetracks of the day, it became Al’s dream to build and operate a safe, state-of-the-art auto racetrack. By 1949, Al was the assistant superintendent for construction at the U.S. Capitol. From there, he joined Standard Construction Co., builders of the Willston Apartments in Falls Church. Later, he supervised construction of the Willston Shopping Center. While working at Willston, he became acquainted with one of the owners, Harold Nesbitt. They talked nearly every day, and Al shared with him his dream of running a racetrack. He described the success of tracks like the super speedway in Darlington, S.C., and Nesbitt was interested.
Old Dominion Speedway There were several dirt tracks in the area, including the old Longview Speedway in Manassas, which opened in 1947 and closed in 1950. Unbeknownst to Al, Nesbitt and his four partners visited the 23-acre site and bought it in April 1952. “I had advised them not to buy it, but they did anyway,” he recalled. “They told me ‘Well, that’s the way it is,’ and I was in.” His share of the investment was $6,500, which he raised by borrowing on his home in Sleepy Hollow, in Falls Church. Rebuilding the track was the top priority. “During the day I worked outside with the bulldozers regrading the track, and at night, I rebuilt the grandstand, which was rotten,” he recalled. 46
By the last week of August 1952, the rebuilt track, now called Old Dominion Speedway, was ready for its first race, which was held for roadsters. Al soon learned that there were too many tracks and too few roadsters to run on them, so he started his own circuit for stock cars – which didn’t draw the crowds he needed until 1953, when he ran two of NASCAR’s Grand National races. A little-known fact is that before NASCAR, the American Automobile Association sanctioned some races. Tom Frost, of Warrenton, was the AAA’s regional representative while it was involved in racing. Once onboard with NASCAR, Old Dominion became part of the 400-lap Grand National Circuit, which brought top racing names to the track, including Lee Petty, Dave Pearson, Junior Johnson, Buck Baker and DeWayne “Tiny” Lund. Looking to expand the offerings, Al took out a loan and purchased 13 acres next to the track in 1953, and built a dragstrip at Old Dominion – the first on the East Coast. However, he only had 2,800 feet in which to build the strip, which limited the running distance to 1/5 mile, rather than the usual ¼ mile. He got help from Sgt. Bill Jeunette of the Arlington Police Department, who was a member of the Road Knights Hot Rod Club and had contacts in drag racing clubs in Virginia and Maryland. Sgt. Jeunette assured Al that if he built the drag strip, he could bring him the dragsters and the paying spectators. As promised, he delivered the competitors and the crowds – often as many as 2,000 spectators. But the seasonal nature of racing and bad weather took its toll. In order to provide for his family – and keep the speedway open – Al continued to work his construction management jobs. During the winter of 1953, his son Dickie suffered a near-fatal head injury in sledding accident, causing him to lose an eye. The family had little money to pay the medical bills, and to this day, Al is still amazed by the kindness and compassion shown by Dickie’s doctors and the hospitals where he was treated. But by then, Al was forced to sell their home in Sleepy Hollow to cover their debts and hang on to the racetrack. He recalled with sadness that Margaret cried when they lost

the house, but she stood by him – something she did their entire marriage. “She was always there for me … and I owe her for everything we ever had,” he said.
Mr. Gore’s speedways After two years, Nesbitt bought out his partners, and was ready to move on to something else. “Mr. Nesbitt offered to sell the track to me, but I couldn’t afford it,” Al recalled. “So he offered to lease it to me, but after a year, I couldn’t afford that, either.” In light of the situation, he told Nesbitt to take the property back, and he would just take his loss. But Nesbitt realized how much of his heart and soul Al had put into the track, and believed that if anyone could succeed, it was Al Gore. “Mr. Nesbitt told me to continue running the track, and if I were ever able to pay him back, to pay him,” Al recalled. “Twenty-five years later, I paid him.” In 1955, Al got a boost when brother Wally organized the Northern Virginia Stock Car Club, which helped assure an adequate number of stock cars to run at Old Dominion. By putting in lights, he was able to hold night races, which also helped. Another break came when Joe Holman, a popular Washington, D.C. press agent, volunteered to provide – for free – publicity for the racetrack. Holman and his wife, who lived at nearby Lake Jackson, were fond of Al and his family, and wanted to help get things going. “At the time, the newspapers weren’t interested in auto racing, except when there was an accident and someone Warrenton Lifestyle
got killed,” said Al. Everyone in the local media knew and loved Joe Holman, considered to be “the last old-time Washington press agent.” For years, Holman handled publicity for the old Uline Arena and Abe Pollen’s enterprises, and was welcomed when he brought in press releases about Old Dominion. At Old Dominion, Margaret Gore was known as “Mama” and Al as “Daddy Gore” by the younger staff and drivers. The Gores didn’t mind the familiar nicknames. “Really, we’re more like one big family there,” Al recalled. “Mama” started a tradition by preparing her special recipe for chili, which she cooked in 25-30 gallon batches in the kitchen under the grandstand. For many years, her chili was a favorite of the drivers, pit crews and spectators. “The day before he was killed in an accident at Talladega, ‘Tiny’ Lund raced at Old Dominion,” recalled Al. “When he left, he took a jar of Margaret’s chili with him.” In 1960, an opportunity to expand came along when the Eastside Speedway in Waynesboro went up for sale after the owner died. Initially working with a partner, Al purchased the dirt track, and enlisted his brother Wally and son Gary to operate it. The first race was run in October.
The drag strip at Old Dominion Speedway was popular with local racecar drivers, including Fauquier’s Lee Edwards, who raced this English Ford dragster there in the 1970s.
Unfortunately, his partner didn’t work out, and by the end of the first year, Al bought him out. But the damage had been done, and Al found he was $20,000 further in debt. Harold Nesbitt heard about his problem and called him, offering to give him a loan to cover the loss. Now able to run Eastside the way they wanted, the track began to turn a profit, in spite of uncooperative law enforcement and roadblocks thrown up by a few Augusta County supervisors. The Gores also had problems with some of the drivers and pit crews, who got drunk and started big fights. They confronted the troublemakers, threw them out, and got restraining orders banning them from the property forever. “As my Daddy said, “If you don’t stop it, you’re going to have to put up with it,” said Al.
Unusual custom-built dragsters known as ‘funny cars’ were raced in a class of their own at both Old Dominion and Eastside speedways. Some were powered by jet engines.
Sanctioned by NASCAR As part of NASCAR’s Grand National Circuit, Old Dominion Speedway was required to provide purses, pay a sanction fee, and to carry insurance – but NASCAR didn’t send cars to the track – that was the responsibility of the owner/operator. At times, getting enough cars to race was a problem. In response to rising costs to participate in auto racing, in 1960 Al started a new circuit for cars powered by the venerable Ford flathead engine. NASCAR officials liked the new circuit, and after introducing standards for cubic inch displacement and carburetion, sanctioned the new circuit races. The best-known NASCAR drivers were becoming affiliated with the racing programs started by auto manufacturers –for example, Lee Petty with Plymouth, Junior Johnson with Chevrolet, and Holman and Moody with Ford. All would race at Old Dominion. The facilities at both tracks were upgraded, and Joe Holman encouraged Al to add other attractions, including wrestling

matches, beauty contests and rodeos, to attract paying spectators that might not be interested in auto racing. Some events made money, others did not. At the urging of WKCW’s Eddie Matherly and members of the Lake Jackson Volunteer Fire Department – who needed to raise some money – in the early 1960s, Al built a park at the end of the dragstrip at Old Dominion, complete with a stage. Matherly booked the entertainment for the park, including performances by Hank Williams Jr., Johnny Cash and the Carter family, Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys, and Grandpa Jones. Profits were split 50/50 with the fire department. Another source of income came about when Sgt. Jeunette worked out an arrangement where police officers from Northern Virginia could use the oval track, the drag strip and even the parking lot during off-times for driver training. In 1967, Al retired from the construction business, and from then on, his focus was on running the speedways. He now had
time to attend NASCAR races at Daytona, Darlington and other major tracks, where his reputation as a pioneer, innovator and track operator often preceded him. Ralph Seagraves, a friend of Al’s who lived in Springfield and was the regional manager for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, convinced the top brass at RJR to get into NASCAR racing in 1970. The cost to have the Grand National renamed the Winston Cup (as in RJR’s Winston cigarette brand) was $5 million a year – a small part of RJR’s $55 million annual advertising budget. It was a good deal for everybody Over the next 30-plus years, the Gores ran NASCAR-sanctioned races every week during the season, and added special events like car shows, motorcycle races, “Bug-Ins” for Volkswagen enthusiasts, and “nostalgia” car shows. Races were held at both tracks for “funny cars,” including racers powered by surplus jet aircraft engines that thundered down the track.
Quieter times In 1982, Al was diagnosed with cancer, and prior to treatment, it was discovered that he also had serious heart problems. His cancer was cured, but doctors could not steady his irregular heartbeat. After many tests, he was told that his heart was simply “worn out.” Needing to slow down, he turned over full responsibility for running the tracks to Gary and Dickie. In 2002, his sons felt they had been in the business long enough, and decided to sell Old Dominion Speedway to Steve Britt of Fairfax. At first Al was reluctant to sell, “But they got one hell of a good price for it, and that was the best thing that ever happened to us,” he said. Britt ran the Manassas track until the end of the 2012 season, after which plans called for the property to be developed and the track moved to a new site south of Fredericksburg.
As part of his induction into the East Coast Drag Times Hall of Fame in 2002, Al Gore was given this Winston Cup helmet signed by dozens of well-known racecar drivers.
The Gores still own Eastside Speedway, but the track has been leased to another operator since 2007.
In 1973, Al Gore (right) met top NASCAR driver Richard Petty at the Daytona speedway. Richard and his father Lee Petty both raced at Old Dominion.
Dickie Gore continues to serves on NASCAR’s three-member Grievance Board, and Gary Gore stays involved by organizing and promoting two nostalgia car shows each year. Al accompanies Gary to many of the regional car shows, passing out flyers inviting exhibitors to participate in their upcoming nostalgia shows. Listening to Al, two things are clear: his belief that people are inherently good, and his gratitude for the help he has gotten from others over the years – from those who were involved with making his dreams come true, to the doctors who saved his son’s life. “The people that I’ve dealt with all of my life have been good, decent people,” he said. “For some reason, they bent over backwards to do things for me.” Perhaps it was because they realized that Al was a man of his word, and would meet them more than halfway if given a chance to follow his dream.

What Physical Therapy Can Treat & How to Choose Your Provider by Kendal Blaser, PT
Physical therapy is extremely valuable for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of a broad scope of problems related to movement, function, and health. It is an excellent treatment solution for sports- and work-related injuries, musculoskeletal problems, trauma-related injuries, neurological conditions, pre-operative conditioning, and post-operative recovery. Many people are unaware of all of the impairments, functional limitations, and disabilities resulting from injury or disease that can be treated and managed effectively with physical therapy. In some cases—physical therapy can delay or even prevent surgery. Often physical therapy can reduce or eliminate the need for pain medications. Once your physician provides your diagnosis—ask if physical therapy might be appropriate for you.

Your physical therapist is an important member of your healthcare and wellness team. In many cases physical therapy can provide an alternative to painful and expensive surgery. Often it can manage or eliminate your pain completely without medications and their side effects. Be sure to choose your physical therapist wisely to maximize your results. Neurological A stroke can create extensive challenges in everyday life. Physical therapy can help with your rehabilitation following a stroke. Parkinson’s patients are excellent candidates for physical therapy to maximize the ability to function independently. Your physical therapist can provide you with: ● Strengthening and balance training ● Coordination and balance conditioning ● Gait training
Balance You don’t need to be in pain to benefit from physical therapy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—more than 1/3 of all adults 65 years old and older fall each year in the United States. Of those who fall—20% to 30% suffer moderate to severe injuries. Through balance programs physical therapists can help you reduce your risk and prevent unnecessary falls. Also, such programs are valuable for those who suffer from vertigo.
Endurance & Strengthening An endurance and strengthening physical therapy program can maximize function for aging joints, prevent injuries, and provide a safe activity protocol. Often such programs can delay the eventual need for a joint replacement.
How to Choose Your Physical Therapist You should take an active role in choosing your physical therapist just as you do when you select your physician or pharmacist. If physical therapy is prescribed by your physician—you decide where you will receive your treatment.
● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●
extensive experience strong clinical knowledge and skills effective communication and listening skills a willingness to spend the time needed with you dedication to positive patient results a genuine attitude of caring, respect, and trust a warm, welcoming, professional demeanor a team attitude to work well with your referring physician and, if applicable, with your fitness center a high patient satisfaction rating convenient hours and location
In addition to a comprehensive clinical knowledge of your injury or physical issues—effective physical therapy and successful patient care requires: ● ● ● ● ●
A thorough exam and established plan of care Hands on treatment—your physical therapist should have skilled, experienced hands and use them to treat you during every visit Use of various modalities to help manage pain, reduce inflammation, and foster healing including— mechanical traction, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, heat, cold, iontophoresis, whirlpool, paraffin, and laser light treatment Regular assessment and modification of your treatment plan as needed—every time you see your physical therapist he/she should assess your progress and revise treatment plans as necessary to help you achieve optimum results One-on-one time—your physical therapist is an important tool for your recovery or improvement—he/she needs to devote the time required to address your questions and concerns completely
The last two items in the bulleted list above are critical and are key determining factors in quality of care and successful results. Far too often these components are not provided as they should be and patients suffer as a result. If you are not improving as envisioned— appropriate changes should be made to your care plan to ensure that you are receiving the optimum care and results. If your physical therapist does not meet all of the criteria outlined above—you should consider alternative options for a physical therapy provider to maximize the value and success of your treatment. Choose a physical therapist who is well qualified and dedicated to helping you achieve optimal health and wellness.

Fauquier Health Journey to Good Health Begins With a Single Step
A year ago, Traci Hoeting weighed 265 pounds. She’s down to 162, and dropping.
In the last year or so, Traci Hoeting, reading teacher at Marshall Middle School, has gone from 250 to 162 pounds and has dropped 10 pants sizes. At 59 years old, she used to take nine different prescriptions every day; now she is medication free. She did it one step, one day at a time. Now that she’s 88 pounds lighter, she said, “I know what it feels like to wake up in a body that works and moves.” Before she lost the weight, Hoeting was a Type 2 diabetic, but she has left that diagnosis behind. “It’s amazing to think that in just one year, I reversed decades of damage.” Committing to Change The Fauquier Health Wellness Center, where Hoeting is a member, has provided tools to help manage all aspects of her health. She began slowly with 30-minute exercise classes, three times a week, then added other activities and explored the resources available. She works with personal trainer Denise DeCarlo and participates in group fitness classes. Hoeting also consulted registered dietitian Aren Dodge and attended relevant lectures offered at the Wellness Center. Hoeting notes that, while working with a 54
personal trainer has been important, “I’m only with her one hour a week. That gives me 167 other hours that I have to make good decisions about diet and exercise, and to incorporate the changes I’ve been taught.” Hoeting works out six days a week, either in a class, with weights or on a cardio machine. She says she pays attention during instruction so she can replicate exercises on her own. “The exercise physiologists do a great job teaching. But later, if I’m unsure, there’s always someone on the floor to demonstrate and check that I’m performing a move correctly. That’s a great safety net. My new goal is to run a 5K. I’m training using the Couch to 5K program posted at the Wellness Center. I’m not very fast, but I’ll get there.” She added that she has probably tried every class at the Wellness Center — even those that seemed daunting. “For a long time, I thought Pilates looked too hard. Finally, I tried it, and fell in love with the gracefulness of the movements.” In addition to exercise, Hoeting revamped her diet. She said that a year ago, her eating habits were all over the place. She would eat healthy for a week, but then fall back into old habits and regain any weight she had lost. She worked with Aren Dodge on nutrition, especially on how it pertained to her diabetes. “Aren provided clear, precise information and great visuals so I could understand how my body was compromised and how to fuel it.” A Life of Health Improvement Hoeting used to think of getting healthy as a race with a finish line. Now she says, “I’m not running a race; I’m living a new lifestyle. The Wellness Center is not

Life &
living it
I am home.
Alright. I admit it at the outset. I am a Yankee. No point in even trying to hide it. I have lived in this community for almost 30 years and folks still say to me after exchanging a few words, “You aren’t from around here, are you?”
As explained earlier, I am a country boy. I grew up in a village of 3,500 people where there was one main street with no traffic lights, just one school building covering kindergarten through high school, and a small police force. No building on Main Street was over two stories tall.
But I am from “here” if you will allow me to explain. To some, if not most Americans, New York means New York City. I come from New York State but people in New York City also considered me an “outsider.” I grew up in rural Islip, Long Island. I did not talk the way city folks did. To me creek was pronounced “crick” and “down the road a piece” was completely misunderstood by urbanites who measured distance in blocks.
You see where I’m going, don’t you? It makes you think of Warrenton, a town a bit larger than my hometown, yet similarly having a Main Street comprised of a court house at one end, church spires at the other end, and numerous small local stores in between.
The state of New York offers the ocean, gigantic beaches, steep mountains, lakes of all sizes and depths, prosperous urban areas, potato fields, and vineyards. I had my doubts as to whether Virginia could approach the diversity and natural beauty of New York State. I have swum in Long Island Sound, Great South Bay, Lake Erie, and in the Atlantic Ocean. I have climbed the difficult slopes of the Catskill Mountains and the more steeper Adirondacks. I have visited beautiful vineyards in the rolling sunny hills of the Finger Lakes region.
In January of 1983, coming back from a weekend trip along Skyline Drive, I stopped at Napoleon’s which was at that time a fine dining restaurant, ate by a crackling fire, and ended the meal by deciding to tour the community. I was sold – shady streets, well kept homes, people who waved at me as I drove by – I was home.
But the Federal Government brought me down here as a Research Psychologist and I was ready to give Virginia a chance.
In 1987 a 50th year high school reunion took me back to Long Island to visit my fellow students who were still alive. We had not seen each other for fifty years. Aside from the need to recognize them by examining class photos, the reunion was most enjoyable. However, as I wandered around the community a sadness
came over me. Scattered around my former rural areas were apartment buildings, motels, new highways, larger stores, and numerous traffic lights. My home town had disappeared. While driving back toward Fauquier County, I had the distinct feeling of coming home. The village I had called “home” in my younger days was no longer there and the community where all my wonderful new friends lived lay ahead. That night I slept in my bed, in my house, in my community. During my career as a Boy Scout Executive I changed locations much as clergymen do. I lived in Geneva, New York, for three years, in Newark, New Jersey for four years, in White Plains, New York for three years, and again in Islip, Long Island for three years. As a doctoral student at Syracuse University I lived a half hour away in the small hamlet of Preble for seven years. I have lived in or near Fauquier County for almost thirty years, a third of my life. Except for those residents whose ancestors have lived here throughout many generations and for whom I have great respect, I am indeed from
“here.” My house is here, my occupation is here, my friends are here and, above all, my heart is here. With an utter lack of humility I had been willing to give the “state of presidents” a chance. Coming from a state which boasted of the Battle of Long Island and the Battle of Ticonderoga, I found myself living within 30 minutes from the scene of the Battle of Manassas. All around me were historical markers calling to my attention who fought and bled for the Constitution under which I freely live. It is in this community that, with the help of fellow doctors, hospital staff, the chambers of commerce and, above all, my patients, that I created and built my practice. Simultaneously many acquaintances came into my life, a significant number having become close friends. I feel myself surrounded by people who have gotten to know me and to care. So, yes – my origin may always be “Yankee” but I am most definitely from here.
