FROM THE
Publisher
Two thousand fifteen. Twenty fifteen. MMXV. 2015. No matter how it said or written, this year sounds like something out of a science fiction novel. The best part about 2015, for us, is that we are all part of a Warrenton, Virginia community that keeps getting better by the day. Our future is very bright and we want you to be a part of it. This year at Lifestyle Publications, we will introduce some new features and contributors. As usual, we begin with a regular ‘who’s who’ of local writers - John Toler, George Rowand, Dr. Robby Iadeluca, Aimee O’Grady, and Robin Earl. We will deliver more regular columns from local experts – no canned stories from a service bureau and, for the tenth year in a row, no out-of-County ads either. Almost 12,000 of our magazines will remain freely distributed to everyone in the Town of Warrenton and a little beyond; thank our advertisers for that luxury.
Our goal is to make it easier for you to shop the fine stores and services that make Warrenton a wonderful place, and with that we bring you, for the eighth year, a directory featuring Warrenton businesses and some local advertisers of The Warrenton Lifestyle magazine. Quality goods and services are available right here in our backyards. You don’t have to drive far and get to enjoy more time with your family and friends. As always, we welcome your comments and suggestions for our publications. On behalf of all of us here at The Warrenton Lifestyle Magazine and Piedmont Press & Graphics, we wish you a prosperous and peaceful New Year. All the best,

Can You Hear It?
Eme Mitchell-Butler transcends the background noise by Debbie Eisele
Music‌it’s all around us on the TV, radio, iPods, smart phones and even elevators! But, it goes beyond that. It is deep in our heart and touches our spirit. It goes beyond the notes on the page, reaching down into our emotions of joy, sadness and excitement. One particular Warrenton student hears it very, very well. At 6 years old she could identify the tuning of her second hand piano keys faster than the tuning oscilloscope. By 7 years old, experts indicated that her talent pointed towards her having perfect pitch. She is now 8 years old and she sings, plays the piano, drums, ukulele and performs on stage. Unlike the majority of us, she cannot see music videos, the keys on her iPod, or her musical instruments. It goes beyond just the mechanics. She cannot see sheet music or her instructors. She cannot see the facial expressions or body language that music evokes. But, she hears it AND CAN FEEL it on a deeper level. It goes far beyond the basic structure. Because she can hear the music, play the music and sing the music so incredibly well, it is important to highlight those attributes rather than her blindness. To all of the staff and other 6

students at Allegro Community School of the Arts, she is Eme, just another talented student. For the past two years, Eme has been a student of Allegro Community School of the Arts where she has studied voice, piano, percussions, ukulele and has participated in our Broadway Camp program. During the Broadway Camp performance of the Wizard of Warrenton, Eme participated just like everyone else. She moved around stage and sang with all the performers. The audience didn’t know she was blind until the end of the performance when she came out center stage with her ukulele and navigated to the end of the stage with her long white cane. She sat down laying her long white cane beside her as she dangled her little feet into the orchestra pit. She picked up her ukulele and accompanied the choir on the final song! Amazing, right? We have to agree. Eme has a very rare disease called LCA (Lebers Congenital Amaurosis) that causes degeneration in her sight that leads to blindness. Though she was not diagnosed until she was 3, she was likely born blind. She reads braille and attends public school. Eme is a rock climber, roller skater and baseball player. Just because she is visually impaired doesn’t mean that she cannot participate in events and activities normally performed by the “sighted”. Everyone at Allegro Community School of the Arts feels that ALL individuals, from children to adults, should be able to participate in community activities and that sharing music and a love of the arts should be one of those activities. Allegro Community School of the Arts has always welcomed individuals with special needs. They offer individualized music education programs designed around students’ special requirements – that’s how Eme got started. Students are mainstreamed with the other students of the school and it enhances their learning experience. Allegro Community School of the Arts has founded the “Can You Hear It?” visually impaired program within our special needs component. They plan to change the landscape for the 7

low incidence disability of blindness, and offer a complete education that encompasses Braille music instruction. Special equipment, software and staff are all necessary components to this program. Allegro is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization that relies upon outside funding sources to generate our programs and services. With the official launch of the “Can You Hear It?” program, Allegro is seeking grants and private funding to support this new initiative. All the equipment, software and additional staff will enable the school to instruct and fully integrate visually impaired students, like Eme, with the sighted students to achieve their maximum level of potential in their studies of music and the arts. The “Can You Hear It?” program will provide services to the visually impaired in Fauquier County and surrounding counties. With Eme as the program ambassador, we are building 8
this robust program to allow us to become a regional school for the visually impaired. There are currently no other music education programs such as this developed specifically for the visually impaired in our county or surrounding areas. The only similar school, and one Allegro has been in contact with, is located in California. We look forward to having them assist with the development of a comprehensive program for visually impaired students in our area. Allegro Community School of the Arts is very excited to start this journey, as they feel it can assist so many people within the region. Please contact the school if you would like to support this groundbreaking opportunity through our “Can You Hear It?” program. To become a community partner (in the form of corporate sponsorship) or to donate to the “Can You Hear It?” program, please contact Lachelle Yoder, cofounder of Allegro CSA. She may be reached by phone at 540-349-5088 or email lachelle@allegrocsa.org. Donations to Allegro will follow IRS regulations for charitable contributions for 501(c) 3 organizations. Allegro Community School of the Arts was founded on the principals of providing inspiration and education to all of our students, with performance opportunities in a variety of settings. Our school offers lessons for adults and the young, college prep programs and toddler programs. It is our mission to “Share The Music” with everyone, whether it is in a group performance in Old Town, a private performance at a theatre, at a place of business for a special function, or a stage performance at our very
own Cellar Door. We look forward to hearing you say “Can You Hear It?” as we embark on this expansion of a remarkable program to enhance our community! Come join us at the Cellar Door and hear the music for yourself – it is open to the public on Friday evenings. Anyone is welcome to participate in musical performances or to listen and is a free venue. Follow us on Face Book, Twitter and visit our website at www.allegrocsa.org for more information on all of our services. Eme will perform at a concert on Friday, February 13th at 7:00 p.m. at St. James Church with a reception to follow.

BOOK SMARTS STREET SMARTS by Dr. Robert Iadeluca
10
My Italian grandmother had six sons – my father and five uncles. Only one, my Uncle Joe, graduated from high school. I, as many of you know, hold a Ph.D. Yet, I can say without fear of contradiction, that many, perhaps most of the down-toearth skills I hold that have guided me through 94 years of life were instilled into me by these family members. My mother, as my regular readers know, led me into reading at an early age, which made books a solid part of the rest of my life. She formed me into being a thinker. My father and uncles led me into being an acute observer of others, their successes and failures. They formed me into being a doer, someone who then tries and either does well or falls on his face. Thanks to my mother’s Swedish side, I hold the doctorate, which gives
me the technical knowledge necessary to guide my patients. From my father’s Italian side I hold the ability to recognize very quickly the relevancy of my patients’ appearance and behavior. Yes, we are talking about booksmarts vs. street-smarts. Street-smarts is learning how to take what has happened to you, good or bad, and learning to improve oneself from it. As I say regularly to my patients, every experience is a learning experience. An unfortunate experience can be a benefit if one pauses to examine the details and determines not to repeat the wrong decisions. In other words, street-smarts, can only be obtained by first hand knowledge. The event must happen to you or you saw it happen to someone near you.

Book-smarts are the lessons learned from the insights of others after they have had successes or failures. In their minds, book-smart people create a map of the world made by thousands of others. The reader then imagines how he might handle a specific situation following the “rules” laid out by the book’s author. Book-smarts requires a controlled environment with a right and wrong answer. Those with book-smarts have great knowledge but can be paralyzed easily by stress and pressure. In real life one needs to roll with the punches and deal with obstacles. In peace times, a person obtains the military rank of officer by attending a military school. This ordinarily takes years of hands-on training in addition to classroom study. When the United States declared war in 1941, there were not sufficient trained officers necessary to guide the millions of servicemen recruited. The Army responded by creating a three-month program at Ft. Beginning from which students graduated with the rank of Second Lieutenant. I remember the majority of us soldiers looking down at these “90-day wonders” knowing that they did not have the street-smarts of, for example, West Point graduates. In street-smarts you have put yourself at risk and survived or thrived – you have scars – you’ve been tested and have a bank of courage on which you can depend when you are tested again. Having street-smarts is not a choice – it is something you are exposed to, forced to live and through which you survived with all your zeal and courage. Upon graduating from high school at the age of 16, my father and I went to live with his mother in Brooklyn. At that time, (1937) daily newspapers were three cents and the subway cost a nickel. Each morning my grandmother
gave me a packed lunch and my father gave me $.13 – ten cents to travel to Manhattan and back and three cents to buy a newspaper so I could scan the classified ads. In this way I brought in money working at temporary jobs until I found more permanent work. I met nice people and mean people; was received or rebuffed. One of my jobs shortly after high school graduation was working at a luncheonette delivering “bon voyage” baskets to passengers in ocean liners about to leave for Europe. Looking at a map of Manhattan might have shown me the best way to find the location of each dock. It turned out that asking people gave me the shortest and fastest way. The previous years in school I was reading about life. Now I was living it. The previous classroom years, however, were not a loss. Book-smarts furnish a strong base of knowledge. Wise folks realize that their knowledge is built upon the shoulders of their predecessors. Academic knowledge plays a part in the foundation of a successful career. Without booksmarts, we have to learn everything for ourselves first hand. Life is too short to learn everything from our own mistakes. Those of us in combat learned the difference between “strategic” and “tactical.” Strategy refers to “what” we want to accomplish. Tactics refers to “how” we accomplish something. Book-smarts are generally for strategic thinking. Book-smarts gives us a map. Book-smarts gives us the lessons learned from the insights and mistakes of others in a shorter period of time than one could learn them oneself. Book-smarts tells us when to apply street-smarts. There are those who might say that it is decided by luck. Many years ago I became acquainted with the expression which says: “Luck
is opportunity accompanied by preparedness.” As World War II in Europe came to an end in 1945 the Army formed a section called Information and Education which in effect formed regimental schools by placing those soldiers with skills in touch with those who wanted to learn those skills. My ability to speak French (book-smarts) later enabled me to attend the University of Paris and gain college credits. My street-smart experience gave me the motivation to apply. Which method to choose? And why? Go for the doctorate? We’ve all heard of the PhD’s who are driving taxis. Skip college? Yes, there are successful entrepreneurs out there who never went past high school. Why one or the other? Why not both? And, if so, which one first. That, in many ways has been decided for each of us already without us having to make a choice. In effect, life often chooses for us. A street-smart person rarely starts with the wish to be streetsmart. It is his destiny, which takes him there. He uses drugs illegally and finds himself addicted. He gives personal information to strangers and loses financially. He follows the untested lieutenant rather than the experienced sergeant and is wounded. Simply put, life gives you the final test first and then lets you study for it later. Both types of knowledge are necessary. There is no one key to success. However, it is important to choose the books that one reads and essential to choose the “streets” one hangs out on. The difference is who is at the center of knowledge. On the street, it is you. In a book, you are one degree removed from actual experience. The combination of both can lead to success.

t takes dedication and commitment to raise a family of leaders. Jim and Colleen Koehr, Fauquier residents and parents of 12 children, have been doing just that on a large scale for nearly three decades. Their success extends beyond the walls of their home and into our community: Jim coaches high school swim athletes and gives presentations on leadership to students while Colleen is a prominent figure in church activities.
A LEGACY OF SCOUTING The couple has helped six of their sons become Eagle Scouts, the highest recognition of the Boy Scouts of America. Since 1911, over 83 million boys have become Boy Scouts. Of this number, only 2%, or a little over 2 million young men, have earned the rank of Eagle Scout. In the Koehr household, earning an Eagle Scout badge has become an expectation. Jim’s father was the first in the family to become an Eagle Scout in 1952, followed by Jim and his three brothers in the 1970s, and now six of his sons, as well as three nephews
great
expectations With an emphasis on Scouting Jim and Colleen Koehr raise future leaders
for a total of 14 Eagle Scouts in one family. The three youngest Koehr boys are also on their way to earning the recognition. Once a young man becomes an Eagle Scout, he is expected to set a positive example and become a leader in the community. The impact of Scouting on a community is profound. Since the organization’s inception, the Boy Scouts have logged over 100 million volunteer hours. Eagle Scouts alone have donated over 9.5 million volunteer hours. COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS In order to become an Eagle Scout, a boy must develop a community service project. This experience requires scouts to create a project, present it for approval, invite a beneficiary, secure materials, and then oversee the execution of the project with the help of other scouts. Community service projects can take many months to complete. When wages are calculated for the projects done by volunteers, the savings for the community is significant.

The process of presenting a project, acquiring approval, and seeing the project through to its end provides scouts with the opportunity to develop leadership skills that are then applicable in all areas of life. According to Koehr, “It takes a certain temperament to make leadership possible, but even without that, everyone is born with a tendency to lead.” In order to earn the Eagle Scout rank, the Koehr boys have completed a number of service projects such as installing a sand volleyball court at Bellevue Recreation Center, guardrails for a parking lot at the Athey Field Complex, and seating at St. John the Evangelist Church. The guardrail project, executed by now-18-year-old Brian, helped solve a serious issue for local soccer families. “The Athey soccer fields did not have enough parking for the number of games played each weekend,” Jim Koehr explained. “Families would park at the top of an incline, which posed a risk to the spectators and players below. No Parking signs did not do much to alleviate the danger, so Brian presented a solution that included guard rails.” Once Brian gained the approval of the Boy Scouts, he approached Norfolk Southern 16
Railroad, who ultimately provided the rails. Koehr jokes, “In hundreds of years, archaeologists are going to find those rails.” When now-26-year-old Sean Koehr planned his community service project, he envisioned a sand volleyball court that would benefit the community. This endeavor required the approval not only of the Boy Scouts, but also the park authority. It ultimately required 166 tons of sand and 44 tons of gravel to construct, and many hours of manual labor performed by over 35 individuals. Patrick’s project helped the local church community while also honoring his Godfather, Deacon Reagan. He designed 12 benches that convert to six picnic tables for an outdoor classroom under the Deacon Regan Pavilion at St. John’s. Kevin learned a valuable lesson in project management during his project when, upon completion, it was not approved and he needed to plan and execute a second community service project to achieve Eagle Scout rank. THE KOEHR FAMILY TREE The Eagle Scouts are not the only leaders in the family. The Koehr family tree also boasts military
officers, a medical professional, a teacher, a seminary student, engineers, and even a competitive Celtic Dancer. Koehr’s eldest daughters, Kaitlyn and Kelly, honed their leadership skills thanks to their placement in the family. “With nine younger brothers, they simply didn’t have a choice,” laughs Jim Koehr. Today, Kaitlyn manages a dialysis center in Tennessee, and Kelly is a math teacher at Cedar Lee Elementary School in Bealeton. Kelly’s leadership skills are evident in the classroom. One experience early in her career left her in a classroom of students uninterested in reciting the pledge of allegiance. Kelly gave them the option to stay quiet but only after reminding them of the men and women who fought to give them that right. Kaitlyn’s profession was driven by an accident that occurred her first week of college. After sliding off a rock and freefalling 80-feet while hiking she broke her neck and collarbone. After months of healing and rehabilitation, she made a complete recovery and dedicated her career to nursing. Sean’s calling to be a priest happened when he was in his fourth Warrenton Lifestyle
SmileS are for Sharing,
year of college. When he approached his father with this challenging decision, his father’s response was, “if it is not worth taking a risk, it is not worth doing”. It is these few simple words that have encouraged each of the Koehr children to carve out their own unique path through life. AN ENVIRONMENT FOR SUCCESS Jim Koehr explains that in the household success is simply expected of everyone. “We are raising people who will have a positive impact in the world,” Koehr states. This is why the boys are raised with the expectation that they will earn Eagle Scout badges, just as all the children are raised with the expectation that they will go on to attend college. Koehr feels that it is important that parents demonstrate leadership to their children by volunteering since “in the past, children bore witness to their parents in the work environment whereas today, work is commonly performed outside of the house”. Jim Koehr believes that the children are willing to take risks thanks in part to the strong family environment in which they have been raised. “Everyone in the family has a large support system. If you don’t have a strong family, no one is willing to take a risk,” Koehr says. He credits his wife Colleen for being the anchor in the family. “A loving mother makes a family safe. Our kids are safe to take risks and challenge themselves because someone always has their back.” He notes that large families have an interesting dynamic. “Over time the kids begin to look out for each other and don’t always come to mom and dad with problems.” COPING WITH FAILURE With a family of risk takers, it is natural for failure to occur from time to time. Koehr explains that his family’s faith helps them navigate through failures to reach their short- and long-term goals. “We believe that God has given us certain gifts and it is our responsibility to develop them to the best of our ability. If you do your best and fail, it is okay. We only become upset when you stop using your gifts.” The root of success in the Koehr household is love. The family nurtures altruism and encourages children to think of others’ needs rather than just their own. Colleen Koehr has spent her adult life thinking of other people and keeping her family safe. This demonstration of love to her children has been constantly reinforced throughout the years. Between their unwavering love and support and their encouragement of their children, the Koehrs are raising strong leaders who are giving back to our community through their Scouting efforts and their dedication to tomorrow’s youth. Weekly education sessions will tackle topics like “Readiness for Change,” “How to Say Goodbye to Processed Foods,” “Exercise for Health,” “How to Track Your Progress” and “Taking the Stress Out of Stress Reduction.” Setting Up for Success While learning how to feel and look better, you’ll develop a personalized Master Action Plan, with assistance from Wellness Center dietitians and exercise physiologists. Between lectures, you’ll tackle specific nutrition and fitness challenges designed to motivate and inspire. LeAnn McCusker, director of the Wellness Center, will join internal

medicine physician Joseph David, M.D., for the first talk, “Readiness for Change.” McCusker says, “Some folks feel sort of obligated to start a new diet every January. But all the best intentions in the world won’t get you where you want to go unless you have a plan.” And having a supportive team helps, too. “Dr. David and I will help you develop a road map for health so that you can meet your goals. Your plan may start out with a small action — eating five helpings of vegetables a day, for instance. But if you can follow that plan until it becomes second nature, your next goal can build on that,” she says. A Plan Tailored to Your Needs Week six of the program will feature one-on-one sessions with Wellness Center staff. They’ll help adjust your plan and troubleshoot concerns, so you can continue your progress into March and beyond.
Joseph David, M.D., internal medicine specialist, will speak on “Readiness for Change” in the first educational session of the Gear Up for Health program of events.
Education Sessions Wednesday, February 4: Readiness for Change Wednesday, February 11: Say Goodbye to Processed Foods Wednesday, February 18: Exercise for Health Wednesday, February 25: Tracking Your Progress Wednesday, March 4: Taking the Stress Out of Stress Reduction Monday, March 9 to Friday, March 13: Schedule one-one-one sessions with Wellness Center experts to refine your Master Action Plan. Leadership Fauquier A Community Program Emerges To Foster Young Leaders by George Rowand A new initiative is about to burst onto the scene in Fauquier County as a program called “Leadership Fauquier” gets cranked up in 2015. Championed locally by Joe Martin, president of the Fauquier Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Fauquier is being shepherded along by Sarah Yakel, who is president of the organization. Yakel also is a certified financial planner and vice president at The Fauquier Bank. “The more I got to know about it, the more I wanted to help bring it here,” Yakel said. “I started researching programs … who had them, how are they run … and it’s kind of interesting that in Northern Virginia, Fauquier County is the only county besides Rappahannock that does not have a leadership program. “These programs have been around since the mid-’90s,” she continued, “and the gist is that it gives people a big broad overview of the county in which they live … how it operates ... how government, non-profit and private companies work together ... what’s the impact of volunteerism, what is their goal, how can people plug in.” What’s the deal? Leadership Fauquier aims to develop local leaders in business, nonprofits and public sectors. The organization will conduct programs that support that goal, featuring a wide range of classes in – among 20
other subjects – targeted leadership skills, strategic thinking, negotiation, collaboration, mentoring and change management. There will be indepth exploration of the background history of the area that includes local government, economic development, education, communications, community health and wellness, public safety, arts, entertainment and tourism. It is something that current leaders can see is necessary for the future of the county. “Crystal McKinsey (of McKinsey Development) is working with us,” Yakel said, “and she said that she really wants to find a way to connect these Millennials that are working for her to the county because they work for her for three to five years, and then they take off and go somewhere else because they don’t see a future here. They see a good start, but then they go somewhere else, and if they could see that if we worked together here in Fauquier, something really exciting would be going on.” There are certain criteria to become a participant in the program. One must be a resident or be employed in the county for one year; one must attend the classes, participate in an outside assignment and a community project; and one must have a commitment to civic participation after graduation. The total cost to a participant is $2,995, but the initial
class members will pay only $995. The grand launch date is set for March. “We’re trying very hard to be inclusive, but it’s very hard to include the northern end and the southern end of the county,” Yakel said. “It’s very easy to attract the business community, it’s very easy to attract the typical players, but it’s really hard to attract minorities and the people who normally don’t get heard, and that’s what we’re working on … attracting leaders from all positions, not just the business community, but also non-profits and various demographics across the county. That’s where I get passionate about this. When you have that many viewpoints coming in and looking at problems from a completely new and different viewpoint, what cool stuff can we come up with? What’s really neat is that every step I take on this is a step in faith that this is going to turn into something special.” Fauquier County is funding part of the program. “They think they really should be involved in this because they say that ‘We’re seeing issues in the county that you guys should know about,’” Yakel explained. “And the Fauquier Health Foundation is very interested in this program because they want to build up the non-profit infrastructure in the community. They want to help raise up prepared and qualified leaders to really impact the community, so there’s just Warrenton Lifestyle

Fauquier Bank Vice President Sarah Yakel and Fauquier Chamber President Joe Martin spent countless hours and drove hundreds of miles laying the groundwork for Leadership Fauquier. a lot of things coming together at the same time.” Anyone can apply for entry into the program. “We’re not talking about age limits,” Yakel said. “There are a lot of folks who retired to Fauquier County who don’t know how to plug in. They have experience in high-powered careers in DC, and they come here and want to do something, but they have no idea what to do. “One of my clients was a really high-powered consultant in DC, and she retired here, loves the county, loves the community, but had no idea where her skill set could best be used,” Yakel continued. “Now she’s volunteering in a lot of things, but she said that she wishes that she could have done Leadership Fauquier where she could have understood
the community a little better before volunteering, and she could know more of where she could volunteer and serve.” Feels like home Yakel said that – after being “from all over” – she is glad to have settled in one place. “I’m an Army brat,” she explained. “I’m from all over … California, Georgia, Tennessee. “I’m not from here, but to me, this is home. If you’re an Army brat, if you’re anywhere more than three years, it feels pretty deep-rooted. I’ve been here about 25 years. My whole career has been on Main Street. I love this place. Fauquier is such a unique and cool county. There’s really cool stuff and really cool people.” Yakel said that she sees interesting people in her line of work all the time.
“It’s amazing the kind of people that Fauquier attracts,” she said. “It’s beautiful, and it’s small town, but it’s close enough to DC. I’m just so grateful. We have three small children, and it’s so much fun to walk down Main Street on First Friday. Who gets to walk on Main Street anymore? My kids know everything about this small town. “Whenever I’m doing something in a volunteer organization, and we need help, I’m amazed at how many people are willing to help, and for Leadership Fauquier, this is no exception,” she added. “I’ll say, ‘Hey, we’re trying to mount this major, 10-month program across the county,’ and people are falling over themselves to volunteer. I’m always amazed at how much our community is willing to give, and that’s what excites me most.” Safe haven Yakel said that she hopes that Leadership Fauquier will serve the community in a variety of ways. “I’m hoping that this can be a calm, safe place where people can come and express their views about the future of the county, a safe haven for people to have an open and collaborative conversation without screaming and yelling. You need a place to connect everybody. “The graduates that come out of Leadership Fauquier are going to become part of a leadership forum,” she continued. “It should be a good feedback place. Five years from now, I hope it’s self-sufficient. I hope it’s on its own. We’re keeping tuition under $1,000 because we want a lot of people to participate, but that means that the support has to come from other folks. Hopefully, it will be branching out and growing … maybe with a youth program and an executive series of people who have retired and are coming into the county. I am very excited about it.” People interested in Leadership Fauquier should go to www.leadershipfauquier.org for more information.

I do it for the transformation. After five soccer-related knee surgeries, my weight was out of control. I went back to the gym on a bet—I’ve continued to go because I’m now in the best shape of my life! I’m down 45 pounds and lifting more than I ever thought possible. Thank you, Old Town Athletic Club (OTAC). ~ Tony T.

Fauquier Chamber Chair of the 2015 Board of Directors
Dear Friends and Business Owners, It is both a tremendous honor and true pleasure to serve as Chair of the 2015 Board of Directors for the Fauquier Chamber. As with any organization there will be numerous goals and challenges. Determining how these will be met and at what pace are vital. I’m looking forward in working with the 2015 Board. About a third of the members will be new faces full of energy, promise, and passion. They will be a perfect match for the “seasoned” directors and their guidance. As Chair, I have several goals to achieve. We will continue to work on and fine tune our internal assessments of policies and processes from 2014. There has been a committee set up that will start meeting in January for these endeavors. The new Governance and Nomination Committee will determine and recommend best practice policies and assess leadership needs, establish leadership goals, and vet leadership candidates. Over the past two years our events and lunches have better served our business community through a better understanding of what our customers need and deserve. These events have earned greater attendance, been led by more dedicated volunteers, increased member satisfaction, increased membership, and provided a bit of community fun and education. Our goal is to increase all of these. Our children are our future and education is their future. It is the Chamber’s responsibility to assist in this education. Not only to build our business future, but more importantly to build our children’s futures and goals. The Chamber will reach out to the education system to see how we may assist them. While the Chamber has improved upon our relations with local and state government, we will strive to further build our communication and commitment to them. This will be accomplished by stepping up communication and build our knowledge of what is needed and how the Chamber may assist. As a small community of vital businesses we all have the same expectations and goals. We are striving to accomplish the same end game - a warm family environment and high quality of life. Like every other endeavor, there are numerous ways to get there. We need to work together to accomplish these much deserved and needed expectations and goals. As your 2015 Chair I will strive to make our Chamber your Chamber and a Chamber that you will be proud to be a part of. It will be a Chamber that will build your energy and passion and will benefit our community, your business, and, more importantly, your family.

It’s Cold Outside! Keeping your creature companions safe and warm this winter
W
ith colder months approaching, it is important to consider the needs of our four-legged, finned and feathered companions during the winter. Changes in housing, care and emergency preparedness will lead to a stress-free and safe season.
Woofs in the Winter
With a great variety of breed types, it is important to consider the needs of individual dogs throughout the winter. Nordic and working breeds will cherish the colder weather, whereas snub-nosed dogs and those bearing less fur will have more difficulty with the change in climate. With dogs spending time both indoors and out, here are a few things to consider:
50
by Charlotte Wagner
Ensure your dog is warm on walks, when outside to play, and on bathroom breaks. Consider the use of a sweater, coat or blanket to serve as a barrier for the cold. Many short-haired breeds are more prone to heat loss than those with lush, dense, water-resistant coats. Make sure to identify signs of hypothermia such as violent shivering, listlessness, low body temperature, weak pulse and lethargy. Frostbite sometimes accompanies hypothermia and is most common in the tail, ear tips, and pads of the feet. If you suspect your dog is ill from the cold, seek veterinary care immediately to prevent further issues. Although they may seem silly, boots can help protect your dog from forming ice clumps between the pads, and serve as a barrier from any chemicals used to clear walkways and roads when it snows. Make sure your dog is kept inside during extremely cold weather. Even if your dog lives primarily outdoors, consider providing an insulated, elevated and heated area that is free from dampness, cold and drafts. You can use space heaters or heat lamps, along with straw and bedding, for additional warmth inside tack rooms, garages and weather-proofed dog homes. Adjust your dog’s diet as needed. Indoor dogs can be fed somewhat less, as they tend to conserve energy due to a lack of activity during the winter months, whereas outdoor dogs require an increase in food to assist with thermo regulation. Continue providing fresh water daily and
consider purchasing a heated dog bowl to prevent water from freezing.
Cats and the Cold
Cat living quarters vary greatly from indoor-only, indoor/outdoor, and strictly outdoor or barn pets. Take your cat’s individual lifestyle into consideration when evaluating winter prep. To avoid potential hazards and keep them warm: Check under hoods, wheel wells and chassis to ensure cats are not using cars as housing during colder months. This goes for outdoor cat owners, as well as people living near feral cat colonies. Screen, or otherwise block off, radiators, fireplaces and other direct heat sources to prevent cats from perching and burning themselves. Consider purchasing pet-safe, heated bedding, an enclosed cat climbing tree, or an appropriate shelter for your cat. For barn cats, provide an insulated house that is elevated and free from dampness, cold and drafts. Speak with your veterinarian about dietary adjustments in the winter. Indoor-only cats are less likely to require adjustments, whereas cats that are indoor/outdoor or strictly outdoor probably require an increase in food to keep up with heat regulation in the cold.
Small Furries When it Flurries No matter what pocket pet you have at home, be sure to keep cages away from windows or doors where cold and drafts may occur.

An ideal place for them is at an interior wall, keeping in mind to avoid direct contact and heat from heaters or vents. Rabbits require regular exposure to direct sunlight throughout the day to absorb vitamin D, but often have a deficiency in winter months. If your rabbit is housed indoors, be sure to either give it exercise outside or consider a vitamin supplement. If your rabbit is primarily outside, ensure the hutch is dry at all times, and supply extra bedding, hay and feed. Change water daily so it does not freeze, or purchase a neoprene sleeve for the bottle to prevent ice from forming.
Feathered Friends and Freeze
As with our other pets, birds need to stay warm in the winter months so keep your house at a minimum of 65 degrees Fahrenheit. In order to prevent stress due to heat fluctuations during power outages and emergency situations, consider purchasing a space heater. Make sure your heater does not contain any Teflon or nonstick coating that may be toxic to birds, and that it does not have any exposed coils that
may be a fire hazard around bird dust and feathers. Try running any new heaters in another room first, to burn off any residues from manufacturing before placing it with your bird. Many pet bird species originate from tropical climates where humidity helps keep their mucous membranes moist and healthy. During our winter months, low humidity can cause birds to dry out and potentially suffer from sinusitis. In order to prevent health issues, make sure to use warm water during your bird’s bath time, let it hang out in the bathroom while you shower so it can inhale steam, or run a humidifier in your house to help moisten the air.
Frigid Fins and Scales
The ideal temperature for the majority of tropical aquarium fish is around 78 degrees Fahrenheit. In the winter, consider adding an automatic heater to your aquarium which will adjust the water temperature to your fish’s needs. If your aquarium is placed near a door, window or other area of heat loss within the house, consider
relocating it to a solid interior wall to prevent temperature fluctuations and minimize algae growth from direct sunlight exposure. With colder weather, there is also concern for power outages, during which your tank’s filter, air pump and thermometer may fail. Consider purchasing a battery powered aerator as backup to help keep the water moving within the tank to prevent toxic buildup. Most reptile species require the use of a heated bulb to regulate specific temperature requirements - something to consider should a power outage occur. Both aquariums and terrariums can be wrapped on the outside with styrofoam to prevent heat loss in emergency situations.
Household Hazards
In addition to considering each of your pet’s needs, make sure the rest of your house and property are pet-safe throughout the winter. Invest in using only pet-friendly salts and de-icers to ensure your pets do not absorb toxins, found in many commercial melts, through their paws. Store liquids, such as antifreeze and lethal vermin deterrents, out-of-reach in sealed containers or cupboards to prevent harm to your pets.

Turning Residents into Savvy Decorators by Aimee O’Grady
The Fabric Emporium 54
When new homes go on the market overly-cautious sellers routinely whitewash over their homes’ personalities with neutral décor leaving a blank canvas on which to create a new masterpiece. Fortunately for new owners, Warrenton is home to several design artists who can help fill that blank canvas. Maria Price, owner of The Fabric Emporium, has a lifetime of design experience, beginning with lumberselection for custom-made furniture. She has been running her business on Main Street since 1995. Ruby Tannehill recently opened The Cotton House using a decade of design experience with a large design firm to work one-on-one with local residents. Both designers work closely with clients and offer a wide selection of home décor fabrics and accessories. Seeking out the expertise of an interior designer to help ensure you consider the entire panoramic picture of the project and do not become singularly focused on one design aspect will help simplify the whole process. Accentuate Your Home For new home builders, selecting builder grade materials, or inexpensive products made from low-grade materials, is an ideal option to save on costs up front with the intention of replacing these items over time with more personalized pieces. As a matter of fact, a neutral-themed home can be transformed with only a few accent pieces. “Something as small as a throw pillow can set the mood in a room,” Price explains. A lamp shade or boldly colored pillow can have a strong impact and create the desired mood. Like pillows, lamps are works of art. “In a neutral space, a bold color scattered throughout in lamp shades can redefine a space,” says Price. Finding custom décor pieces should be an enjoyable process, rather than a race to the finish line. Sara Shultz has lived in her Warrenton home for four years and has enjoyed the process of searching for the right pieces that will give her living room the feel she desires, “Now that my living room is near completion, I always want to sit there, even when I have no reason to. It is a calming and comfortable space for me”. 56
Comfort is key for Mickie Gelling, Warrenton-based textile artist, “when I am designing a piece for someone, I make sure the materials I am working with are comfortable and feel good against my skin. If someone has a particular piece that brings them comfort, I enjoy knowing that I helped bring that comfort to them.” Design Leads to Ambiance Price recommends to begin by selecting a color scheme to create a specific mood. Keeping a scrapbook, either physically or on a website, of ideas will help organize ideas. “A book of ideas will help identify a pattern or repetition of colors,” explains Gelling. Shultz uses the website Pinterest to organize her vision, “I can save photos from decorating magazines, furniture, wall art, rugs, paint colors, etc. This enables me to see everything on one page and see how the pieces look before I make a purchase”. Design follows fashion. Gelling feels that “a customdecorated room is another way, like fashion, to express yourself without relying on a dialogue.” Because the colors one enjoys wearing are usually the colors one will enjoy being surrounded by, the savvy home decorator might look Warrenton Lifestyle

“Something as small as a throw pillow can set the mood in a room,” says Maria Price, owner of The Fabric Emporium. for interior design inspiration within his or her own closet. While it is tempting to select a new paint color based on the most common color in your closet, Intrabartolo cautions that “there are many intricate pieces of design beyond color such as lines, lighting, and texture to consider.” Tannehill advises against beginning with paint. “Once you paint the walls, you limit the selection of fabrics you can use in the room.” Rather, she recommends selecting fabrics first and building the look from there. According to Price, “Your mood and feelings are all affected by the ambiance of the space that surrounds you. The right design of a room will simply make you feel good.” Hillary Gore, Bealeton resident who just completed her home office, feels that “my mood instantly becomes calmer when I spend time in my office. I can relax, enjoy how beautiful everything looks and focus on the task at hand rather than making a mental to-do list”. One Cohesive Look Tannehill suggests carrying the same color scheme throughout the home so that as each room becomes customized, they remain coordinated. “It is important to make colors and themes in each room flow throughout your home,” Tannehill says. “By doing this, you can make small spaces feel larger and improve the general feel of transitioning from one room to the next.” Occasionally, interior design artists suggest more drastic changes to help with the flow of a room. For example, when Tannehill was tasked with redesigning one client’s living room, she recommended sealing up a doorway. “This room modification redefined the entire space,” Tannehill says. “It helped direct the flow of traffic through the living room and provided more wall space for furniture placement.” Tannehill helps clients create a plan to help accomplish their ultimate design goals. This helps keep the homeowners from deviating from their goals. “If they are looking for a French Country style, but
find themselves interested in a Midwestern piece, they know it will not work within that particular space,” explains Tannehill. Outlining a design plan also help you space out expenses to stay within budget. Price suggests that homeowners “take all the stresses in life and do something positive with them.” Use them as inspiration to create an environment where they are alleviated. A homeowner will know when a custom-designed room is complete and that the desired ambiance has been achieved when a former “problem room” has become a favorite room. A Home That Recharges Before turning in each night many of us take our electronic devices: Smartphones, iPads, and other tablets, and plug them in to recharge for the next day. Just as we ensure our devices are recharged each day, so should we recharge ourselves in our surrounding by filling it with colors, fabrics, furniture and textures that appeal to us most. Regardless of your decorating preferences and experience, Warrenton’s interior design shops are available to partner with you to help create an environment that you are proud to call home and are eager to return to at the end of each day.

History
Local Woman Was a Witness to History Her linguistic skills brought Margot Reeves to Nuremberg trials by John Toler During the many years Margot Reeves ran a picture framing and art restoration business in her home north of Warrenton, she was known for her excellent craftsmanship. Although she had lived in the United States for more than seven decades, her slight German accent – and occasional lapses speaking in her native tongue – revealed her foreign roots. It was her skill as a linguist that would bring her one of the most interesting experiences early in her long life. Born July 27, 1915 in Mainz, Germany, Margot was an accomplished musician in her youth, studying at the Academy of Music in Mainz for three years and playing the violin in the Mainz Philharmonic Orchestra. She left Germany in 1935, and lived for a year on a farm in Denmark before coming to the United States with her parents in 1936. Her brother Ernest had come to America earlier and lived in Richmond, Va., where Margot and their parents joined him. Margot could speak four languages 60
– German, French, Danish and English – but her first job in the U.S. was as a governess. She later attended a nursing school, and in 1938 married David R. Boatwright of Lynchburg, whom she had met through a friend of her father. During World War II, Margot put her language skills to work in the U.S. Foreign Broadcast Intelligence Service. Established in February 1941, the FBIS monitored foreign short-wave radio broadcasts, and recorded them on plastic disks. The broadcasts were then translated and transcribed, and sent to the appropriate government agencies and military commands. Operating at four listening stations, FBIS staff recorded speeches and communications made by Adolph Hitler, Joseph Goebbels, Joachim von Ribbentrop, Benito Mussolini, Henri Petain and Pierre Laval and other Axis leaders. This experience would prepare Margot for what would later be her unique

Shortly after Germany surrendered on May 8, 1945, President Harry S. Truman appointed Associate Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson (18921954) chief prosecutor for the United States in the proposed trials of Nazi war criminals. Justice Jackson had to quickly assemble an expert staff, which included not only attorneys, but also office staff, translators and interpreters. Justice Jackson also managed to get the four main Allied governments – the U.S., England, Russia and France – to sign the London Charter, which set up a war crimes commission and detailed how the trials would be conducted. The charter also created the International Military Tribunal, which would administer justice to Nazi political, industrial and military leaders. The first of a series of trials was scheduled to start in late November 1945, and would be held at the Palace of Justice in Nuremberg, Germany. In late October 1945, Margot received Warrenton Lifestyle

The scene of the trials was the Palace of Justice at Nuremberg, which somehow was spared during the Allied bombings. During the trials, armed guards manning checkpoints and a variety of armored vehicles and tanks secured the area.
a letter from the U.S. Department of State asking her if she would be interested in working at the war crimes trials. After brief hesitation, she agreed to serve, and a few days later, she passed an interpreter’s test, and signed a contract at the Pentagon. She then was given her vaccinations, passport and travel orders to Germany. After a general briefing on what to expect during her overseas assignment, Margot went shopping for uniforms with her husband, and picked up items that would likely not be available in a country recently ravaged by war. ON TO GERMANY A day later, Margot found herself the only woman on a C-54 transport plane bound for Europe. One of her fellow passengers was Andrei Gromyko, then the Russian delegate to the United Nations. He would later become the Soviet Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet. After stops in Bermuda and the Azores, Margot’s plane landed in Paris, where she stayed for three days before flying to Frankfort, Germany. From there, she was driven to the nearby U.S. Army Headquarters. Being only about 20 miles from her hometown of Mainz, she requested permission to go there. The authorities agreed, and put a jeep and driver at her disposal. Approaching the Rhine River, the three bridges she remembered were gone, destroyed by retreating Germans. Instead, they crossed on a temporary wooden bridge erected by U.S. Army combat 62
engineers. Reaching Mainz, Margot recognized the house she had left ten years earlier – or what was left of it. “The house looked as if a giant’s hand had scraped out its insides,” Margot recalled in an article published in the Richmond Times-Dispatch in 1947. “The experience moved me more than I expected.” Remarkably, she encountered some people in the ruined town that remembered her, including a seamstress, a teacher, and her former nurse. The next day, Margot arrived in Nuremberg, the city once known as “Germany’s Treasure Chest” because of its wealth and culture. Allied bombs had nearly leveled it. “The first Sunday, when I tried to enter a beautiful church through its exquisite portals, I discovered that there was nothing behind them,” she recalled. “The ancient walled city in the center of Nuremberg was a mass of ruins. Providentially, the Palace of Justice had been left intact.” While they expected to be quartered in tents or barracks, Margot and the other staff members stayed in homes in the suburbs of Nuremberg that had been confiscated from Nazi officials. Security in and around the Palace of Justice was tight. “Smartly dressed MPs guarded the corridors, the courtroom and the jail where the defendants were housed,” she recalled. “Tanks were stationed in the adjoining streets.” Personnel from the Allied countries took their meals together and socialized. There was an 11 p.m. curfew, since it was considered dangerous to walk among the
ruins at night. Before the trials began, staff members were treated to pleasant trips to the German Alps and Switzerland, but also visited a former concentration camp where German POWs were confined. German civilians, mostly women, were hired to work for the Americans. They were cooperative, “...probably not out of love for us, but rather with an eye on the advantages, such as a meal a day, or just being in a heated room,” said Margot. “They were a sorry lot. Their standard of living had sunken terribly low.” THE TRIALS BEGIN The courthouse was a busy and sometimes confusing place, housing pressrooms, offices and workrooms for each delegation and its staff of secretaries and stenographers. There was also a PX store, post office and cafeteria. Nearly 300 members of the world press and radio were present to report on the proceedings. The opening session of the war crimes trials was held on Nov. 20, 1945, with a reading of the indictments by Justice Jackson. The 24 original defendants at the first trial included Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering, head of Nazi Germany’s armed forces, and von Ribbentrop, Minister of Foreign Affairs. Nazi Party Secretary Martin Bormann had not been captured and was tried in absentia, and Robert Ley, head of the German Labor Front, committed suicide a month earlier, leaving 22 to stand trial. Margot was assigned to the translating, court reporting and documents section, and was in awe of what she initially witnessed in the courtroom. “Here I was, attending the greatest of war trials in history, and those 22 defendants in front of me were the men who caused this war!” she recalled. As Allied forces moved into Germany, great efforts had been made to find and secure Nazi documents that could later be used to determine the guilt of those responsible for the war and how it was conducted. Seventy tons of documents were brought to Nuremberg that had to be screened, translated and filed. The translation system that Margot used was a technological marvel for its time. Testimony was translated into the four official languages (English, French, German and Russian) by three teams of interpreters. A complicated system of microphones, earphones and wires led to a panel, where the listener could turn a dial to select which language to hear through his earphones. Behind the scenes was also a busy mimeograph (copying) room, where reams of paper were consumed daily in order to provide written records of the Warrenton Lifestyle

testimony. “The trial itself was sometimes fascinating, sometimes dull, but each and every one of us who worked behind the scenes was conscious of its overwhelming significance,” said Margot. During breaks, she and other staff members would go over to the windows overlooking the prison yard, and watch the Nazi defendants as they took their daily walk below. Oddly, the prisoners made an official protest, complaining that they didn’t like having the staffers staring at them. A disturbing incident occurred during the trial. German POWs – former SS troops – were brought to the courthouse by truck every morning from the camp nearby to do the “heavy lifting” work. Authorities became aware of a rumor that the POWs were planning to stage a jailbreak to free the Nazi defendants, including Goering. The U.S. Army responded immediately by installing machine gun nests, alerting the tank commanders and doubling the guard. Perhaps in light of the increased security, no jailbreak was attempted. THE NAZI DEFENDANTS These were the men accused of being directly or indirectly responsible for the deaths of millions of people on the battlefield and countless civilians in Europe, and murdering millions more in concentration camps. Margot found each of them utterly evil and reprehensible, and believed as many did that their plans for domination of many and annihilation of others were formulated long before the war was started. “Goering was probably the figure best known to everybody,”’ said Margot. “During interrogations, he played up to the interrogators.” He admitted that he was the “Number 2” man in Germany and assumed ultimate responsibility for what happened; but when pressed on specific war crimes, he would deny any involvement, stating that he “...could not be bothered with the details.” As the trial drew to a close, Goering arrogantly boasted, “One hundred years from now, good Germans will dig up my bones and set up a monument to me.” “Joachim von Ribbentrop, who had once directed German foreign policy, was now just the picture of a cornered rat,” said Margot. “He was a weak character who had been just a mere tool of Hitler. In prison he neglected his hygiene to such an extent that he was distasteful even to his fellow prisoners.” Margo singled out three other Nazis she considered particularly revolting: Ernst Kaltenbrunner, who headed the Gestapo and the SS; Julius Streicher, a 64
Nazi propagandist and publisher of Der Sturmer, an anti-Semitic newspaper; and Hans Frank, the former governor-general of Poland. After hearing testimony related to their crimes – and their denials and bizarre excuses – Margot concluded that they “...belonged to the jungle, rather than to civilization.” “Countless witnesses appeared, giving proof that Kaltenbrunner was guilty of mass murder,” said Margot. “However, he admitted nothing... ‘Lies! Lies!’ he said.” Although he denied it, Frank had persecuted the clergy and murdered thousands of civilians in Poland, and clear evidence of his crimes was found in his own diaries. Special disgust was reserved for Streicher, who was notorious for his persecution of the clergy and the Jews. The depth of his depravity was revealed when Streicher testified that he “...owned the largest pornographic collection that anyone of us would ever see,” recalled Margot. The trials of the 22 Nazis concluded on Oct. 1, 1946. The court had met for a total of 216 days, and during that time, studied over 300,000 affidavits and heard millions of words of testimony from over 200 witnesses. In the end, 12 of the Nazis were sentenced to death by hanging in the gymnasium of the court building. Seven were sent to Spandau prison for sentences ranging from 10 years to life, and three were acquitted. Goering cheated the hangman by committing suicide by taking poison the night before he was to be executed. Bormann was already dead, but it wasn’t official until his remains were found and identified in Berlin in 1972. There would be 12 more war crimes trials, starting with the “Doctors’ Trial,” in which 23 concentration camp doctors and other Nazi officials were tried. Sixteen were convicted, mostly for performing “medical experiments” on prisoners in the camps. Some of Margot’s acquaintances questioned why the captured war criminals were given trials, rather than summarily executed. “My answer is that we have moral and legal concepts, and we have to satisfy our own conscience,” Margot strongly maintained. “The guilt of these men had to be proven to the world, and a fair trial had to be given. The taxpayers’ money has
not been wasted. Rather, an investment was made that will pay dividends in future generations, because this trial has firmly established in international law that war of aggression is a crime, that the deporting and enslaving of individuals is a crime, and that governments are subject to law, just as the individuals.” LIFE AFTER NUREMBERG Sadly, while Margo was serving at Nuremberg, her husband David died. Upon her return, she settled in the Washington, D.C. area, where she started a picture framing and art restoration business. She had been introduced to the trade years before by her brother Ernest, and had become an expert in the work. In the late 1940s, she met Olvra James “Steve” Reeves, whose family had a farm in the Catlett area. At the time, Steve was driving a cab in Washington, but always remained in close contact with his family in Fauquier. Margot and Steve were soon married, and were living in Manassas when their daughter Susie was born. Sadly, Susie was diagnosed with cancer, and died in 1955, when she was just five years old. In August 1956, the couple purchased property on U.S. 29 north of Warrenton and built a brick home there, using the skills and labor of some of Steve’s Mennonite friends from Catlett. The house was completed in 1957, and they opened the framing shop in the basement. Their business grew steadily. Margot would do the fine work and design, and Steve put the frames together. Later, Ray Heus came to work in the shop, and Lucille Hawkins, wife of photographer Marshall Hawkins, did the hand tinting. In addition to her local clientele, Margot did work for the U.S. Department of State, where she met Henry Kissinger, Secretary of State during the Nixon and

Her Washington clientele also included several museums and foreign embassies. Steve died in 1992, and in 1993 Margot “recruited” Sherrie Shamburg, then living in Orange, to work in her shop. “I was doing picture framing at Ben Franklin in Warrenton, and Mrs. Reeves called me up and told me I was coming to work for her,” Sherrie recalled. “I came to her house, and she told me, ‘This is what you are going to do.’ We discussed the hours I was to work, and my pay, for helping out a couple of nights a week.’” The arrangement lasted for eight years. After leaving Margot, Sherrie worked for a couple of other local framing companies, and in 2006 started the Studio Frame Shop at 51 Alexandria Pike, above The Paint Shop in Warrenton. her eyesight due to macular degeneration. Drainage contractor Werner Flescher, of The Plains was often called to Margot’s home to help her, and in addition to plumbing work, he handled other chores. He was also one of those who went to the hospital to donate blood when she had her heart surgery. When Margot could no longer use the stairs down to her basement workshop, she found a chair lift for sale at Melrose Castle in Casanova. After closing the deal, she called Werner, who dismantled the chair lift and re-assembled it at Margot’s house. Sherrie Shamburg recalls that Margot gave her children rides on the chair lift when they came to work with her. Margot Reeves died on Feb. 18, 2008 at age 92, after a long and interesting life spanning most of the tumultuous 20th century. Among those notified of her death was Secretary Eagleberger, who received a call at his home in Charlottesville from Bruce Hutchison of Warrenton, another long-time friend of Margot.
Her life took a new direction during the many years Margot lived in Fauquier County, where she made many friends, and served clients who considered her an artist in her craft. She may be gone, but her memory remains in the framed art and restorations that bear her seal on the back.

Mojitos and Tapas offers firstclass Cuban/Spanish dining For more than 8 years, Jackie Hitchcock has passionately tended to her restaurant, Mojitos and Tapas in the Warrenton Center. Her influence is everywhere – from the town’s best seasonal décor to the immaculate dining room to the outstanding variety of Cuban and Latin food. Yet, she continuously gives credit to her staff for making everything over-thetop. “We have chefs that have been with us seven and eight years and our wait staff really love this place,” says Jackie. Even on a gloomy winter day, you feel a little warmer entering Mojitos and Tapas with its authentic Latin ambience. The quaint bar is a comfortable place to enjoy a cocktail like one of eight different Mojitos, a Cuba Libre or our favorite, the house Sangria. Hitchcock’s passion for food began with her Columbian parents and expanded while living in culturally rich places like New York City and Miami. She knew long ago that people really don’t want to eat the same franchise food all the time. Her menu celebrates how important meals are to building relationships.

Here’s January’s schedule as of publication: Thursday, Jan 8 – Steve Lawson from 7 to 10 pm Friday, Jan 16 – check online Friday, Jan 23 – Mark Clay from 7 to 10 pm Friday, Jan 30 – Heart Strings from 7 to 10 pm
Your server will start you wilh oven fresh bread and Dipping Mojo, the typical Cuban oil/garlic mixture. We like to begin with a couple of orders of tapas, small finger foods originating in Spain. Our favorites include the Empanadas, the Zang Zang Shrimp and, believe it or not, the Sauteed Broccoli with Feta (best broccoli you’ll probably ever have). Customer favorites include the Empanadas, Shrimp Ceviche and the traditional Cuban sandwich. Want a real treat? Call ahead and order the two-person Seafood Paella that includes shrimp, mussels, clams, scallops, calamari and fish. Bring a third person to share. This is a really big dish! While locals proliferate the restaurant, we are impressed with the number of people that drive from Northern Virginia and DC for Mojitos and Tapas’ blend of Cuban and Spanish cuisine. One other item to note, on a visit to the restaurant one year a health department official told me that this was the cleanest kitchen in Warrenton and was an example for all other restaurants. I’ve been inside and it is clean and organized. Impressive! Mojitos and Tapas is located 251 W Lee Highway in the Warrenton Center near Faang (their building faces Safeway across the street). Plenty of parking. Call 540 349-8833 or go online www.mojitosandtapas.com. January 2015

NARMADA WINERY Stunning Narmada Winery Offers Big Variety, Soothing Views Amissville is blessed with a stunning countryside and experienced winemakers, both of which coincide in the quiet beauty of Narmada Winery. Sitting on the side of Route 211, this jewel lends a touch of India to the taste of Virginia. You should be warned, however, that once you arrive, you may not want to leave. The winery and vineyards are owned by the winemaker, Sudha and her husband, Pandit Patil. It is an expression of their love for, and history with, Virginia and family. Pandit first came to America from India in 1965 on an engineering scholarship. Unfortunately, while his tuition was provided by that scholarship, his travel and living expenses were not. In order to send the first family engineer to America, Pandit’s mother sold many of their possessions. Today, he honors her 70
name by placing it on the map for all to see - Narmada. The signature white wine, labelled “Mom,” is dedicated to her and to all mothers. The venue itself is visually stunning. The short trip up the driveway presents a view of innumerable vines rolling over gentle hills, and the balcony grants you a view of the vineyards surrounding the pond. Sudha and Pandit began planting the more than 20 acres in 2004, and today grow more than 10 varietals of grapes. Sudha estimates that they personally grow 75-80% of the grapes used in their wine, well above average for a Virginia establishment. The doors opened on the winery in 2009. These days, Narmada is beginning to be known in Northern Virginia for the soothing atmosphere, the exquisite Indian and American foods, and the
excellence of the wine. Sudha is patient, a crucial quality in a winemaker. All wines are aged for a minimum of two years in the barrels, allowing for an extra smoothness and richness that only time can give. In order to keep the wines from being powerfully oaked, however, she uses a large amount of older oak barrels both French and American - to blend with the wine from younger barrels. Only after this long process of aging does any blending occur, and the style of blending itself makes the finished wine even smoother. A big fan of both local Merlot and Tannat, Sudha uses small amounts of these grapes to lend strength, texture and smoothness to other varietals. Originally planning to grow a vineyard rather than make her own wine, she studied under Jim Law (of Linden fame), and values Warrenton Lifestyle
the importance of the quality of both her ingredients and the winemaking process itself. The wine list is an impressive 19 labels, though three are limited releases reserved for club members only. In the tasting room, they are divided into three separate flights, allowing you to select the profiles that you enjoy the most, whether you prefer light wines with a touch of sweetness, drier light wines or the bigger richness of the reserves. As mentioned before, the centerpiece of the whites is the “Mom,” a tropical blend of Chardonel and Vidal Blanc. With less than two percent Residual Sugar (RS), the hint of sweetness balances well with seafood or chicken. The two “Dream” labels are both Traminette, each with a clean fruitiness. While the “Dream Festival” is crisp with a bit of a tropical and citrus feel, the “Dream Reserve” is a bit more complex due to the touch of Viognier added, making for an almost German feel with less than one percent RS. The whites finish off with an apple-fruity Chardonnay, and a big-bodied Viognier, loaded with earthiness and powerful texture. A lone Rosé, the “Gulabi,” is light, dry and full of bright red fruits. Among the reds, the “Midnight” (pure Chambourcin) is an easy-to-drink balance of strawberry and boysenberry. When that Chambourcin is blended with a touch of Merlot and Tannat (almost 10% of each), you have the “Reflection,” a darker wine with a bit of spice and tobacco, and a powerful nose. The Cabernet Franc also uses a touch of Tannat and Merlot, where the grapes lend a smoothness not usually found in the popular Franc. The usual pepper is softened by a stronger body and an extra darkness. The Cabernet Franc Reserve, however, only brings a bit of Merlot - though being from 2010, it has an even fuller, richer feel. Merlot is found again in the “Melange,”
where it is blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to create a bit of tartness with a woodsy nose. For those looking for the biggest wines, the “Yash-Vir” is a Right Bank Bordeaux-styled blend dominated by Merlot, with a lovely aroma and a smooth spice throughout. The Tannat (with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon) is the boldest of the bunch, with cherry, plum, a big nose and a gorgeous color. The reds cover a wide spectrum, but all have the simple smoothness that Sudha has made her own. The dessert spectrum is well-represented, with a late harvest Vidal (the “Lotus”), a raspberry Chambourcin (the “Primita”) and a fortified Port-style (the “Allure”), made with Chambourcin and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon and Tannat. Club members can also enjoy the pure Merlot with its big fruit, the Malbec with its spice, fruit and smooth tannins, and the violet black-peppered Petit Verdot, made even darker (if that’s possible) by a small portion of Tannat. Overall, Narmada lends an air of elegance and sophistication that accents the enjoyable quality of the
wine. Whether you prefer complexity in your wine or a simple variety that is easy to sip, you will find both here at this Indian jewel. Be sure to add this stop to your next wine adventure!
