The year 2016 brought about changes for all of us here at the Lifestyle Magazines. We are now owned by Piedmont Publishing Group, which also publishes the Piedmont Virginian Magazine, The Culpeper Times and Rappahannock News. For this year, I welcome a personal transition. I will no longer be the Interim Editor. Instead, I have been asked to officially join the team as Senior Editor for our three Lifestyle Publications: Warrenton, Haymarket and Broad Run. Learning about the success of an individual, nonprofit, business or service project is most definitely one of my favorite aspects of the work I perform. I have lived in Warrenton for over 18 years and love the towns of Warrenton, Marshall, The Plains, Haymarket and all the other surrounding communities. We are so fortunate to live in an area where kindness still exists, where people bond together for great causes, and where individuals still greet one another on the streets with a hello and a smile – even if they don’t know each other! This type of atmosphere creates a unique opportunity to share a wealth of information about what makes our community special. One common thread I have found in just about every story, whether it be a piece on an individual, business, service project, or

I would like to veneer my front teeth to improve my smile. Do you have to grind my teeth down to accomplish this? Veneers are thin porcelain facings that are bonded to the front of your teeth. They can be used to restore broken teeth, but the main function is cosmetics. There are some situations where veneers can be placed with no tooth preparation. However, if your teeth are discolored or rotated (crooked), some preparation is necessary to achieve a good cosmetic outcome. The objective is to be as conservative as possible and still create a beautiful cosmetic result.

hereas most high school students in the county are required to perform community services for graduation, for some the relationship becomes more than just satisfying an academic requirement. Here, local students share their passion for volunteering which extends beyond academics.
Katelyn Barb
Katelyn Barb is currently the President of the local Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter and the chairwoman of a committee supporting the socialization of special need students. As president of the FFA, Barb is responsible for coordinating events, organizing teams for competitions, and fundraising. Recently, the high school held a fundraiser to purchase a new tractor. The chapter members raised nearly $24,000 and, thanks to a generous donation from the Piedmont Environmental Council, could purchase a new tractor for FFA tractor driving competitions. This is just one competition the members participate in; others include crops,

public speaking, welding, and agriculture business, to name just a few. Barb’s interest in FFA stems from her aunts and uncles who raised goats, sheep, cattle, and chickens in West Virginia. “I spent a lot of time helping them and around their animals, it was just something I knew I wanted to do,” she says. The “Making Friends Committee” is a group Barb created this school year. “My twin sister was a special education student because of a heart defect, and I spent a lot of time getting to know the other special ed kids. I noticed that they really just wanted to be a part of the group and belong,” she says. With the help of her other sister, the idea for “Making Friends” was brought to a teacher advisor, who blessed the creation of the new committee. Currently, Barb has 15-20 students on her roster who interact with the autistic students to assist with socialization. As a senior, Barb isn’t worried about leaving the special education students. She explains, “I plan to begin at Lord Fairfax Community College, so I will be close by. I don’t want to leave them.” After obtaining her associates degree in agriculture, she hopes to move on to a four-year school to earn a special education degree. “I haven’t settled on a career yet, but I would love to own a farm and invite autistic students to be a part of it,” she says. “I have a million ideas.”

Gibson, a first year college student at Johnson and Wales in Rhode Island, is studying culinary arts. During her junior year of high school community service requirements, Gibson followed her passion for nutrition and health, which brought her to Fauquier FISH.
To satisfy high school community service requirements, Gibson worked as an intern at the Food Pantry. She helped stock shelves, fill orders and contributed to the DASH meals (Delicious, Affordable, Simple and Healthy). Over time, her volunteer work blossomed into
something she truly loved: “I was able to make a difference at the Food Pantry. Not only was I helping to meet the food needs for members of our community, but I was also helping to identify healthy alternatives to traditional food pantry fare.” Gibson’s long term career goals are focused on culinary nutrition, which includes healthy cooking and nutritious meals. She looks forward to returning as a volunteer to FISH when she is home on breaks from school. Gibson has also learned valuable lessons from FISH that she uses in her daily life: “as a college student, I

She also opened a lemonade stand in her neighborhood to raise money for MHF. “She made $250 for the shelter just by selling lemonade,” explained her mother. Ellie aspires to become a veterinarian
when she gets older, and has begun her education by taking copious notes each time her parents visit the veterinarian with one of the family dogs. For her mother, the volunteer opportunity is about time spent with her daughter, watching her participate with a giving organization, doing something she loves. ❖

It hasn’t been difficult, once I understood what I needed to do. Once I learned how toxic belly fat is, I was determined to take it off.” Jerry also developed a real appetite for exercise. He does a mile on the elliptical to warm up, completes some strength training and finishes up on the treadmill most days. Often, he’ll finish off with three miles on Warrenton’s Greenway. Celebrity dancers motivate students at Progressions Dance School BY DEBBIE EISELE
O
ur country’s resurgence with the dance craze is evident from hit shows such as So You Think You Can Dance and America’s Got Talent. These shows, along with music videos have inspired today’s youth (even adults) to get out and dance. One local dance school creates an inspirational learning atmosphere for their dancers by capturing the trends of TV by offering Master Classes to local students. These classes provide students the opportunity to learn from the individuals they see on TV or on the stage. Instruction offered in these specialized classes is not just ballet. Progressions Dance School, located in Warrenton, has offered classes from a So You Think You Can Dance star, a prima ballerina, Broadway dancers and other smaller artists; all of which are considered professionals in the dance industry. The ability for students to interact directly with the visitors allows them the opportunity to spend hours learning, progressing and improving techniques in an environment that offers something a bit more than just a normal dance class.

Jennifer Perrius, co-owner of Progressions, detailed the celebrity learning experience, “Having someone working in the industry (professional dance) helps drive home the authenticity of what the students are actually doing in the studio. It is a great reinforcement to what they are learning in class by someone they idolize.” Perrius has welcomed Judy Rice, prima ballerina, and more recently, Rudy Abreu, a participant on So You Think You Can Dance. “Our goal is to provide motivational instruction to our dancers through these special classes,” said Perrius. Celebrities, big and small, seem to attract and hold students’ attention and Progressions provides dancers the opportunity to grow through experiences both artistically and emotionally. Plato once said, “The Dance, of all the arts, is the one that most influences the soul. Dancing is divine in its nature and is the gift of God.” With celebrity visits, students are able to capture the essence of Plato’s quote through exposure to curriculum that improves technique, but at the same time provides motivation and inspiration. Participants realize that dance is soulful; a form of intense expression. It’s all about the experience... RUDY ABREU Rudy Abreu is a well known competitor on So You Think You Can Dance and a working dancer with JLO (Jennifer Lopez) and Derek Hough (on music videos). He is a professional dance instructor in Los Angeles and also works at several other studios such as Millenium Dance Complex, Movement Lifestyle and Edge Performing Arts Center. During Rudy’s recent visit, both younger dancers (Mini’s - ages 8 - 11) and teen students (12 years of age or older) were able to partake in his classes. Perrius described the Mini’s workshop atmosphere, “The kids were star struck! They are avid watchers of So You Think You Can Dance and couldn’t believe he was actually working with them.” During the Mini’s class, Rudy instructed students on improv and combination routines. Rudy created a dance just for them and worked side by side with the students - motivating and encouraging the dancers every step of the way.

...being able to have Rudy Abreu here was truly inspiring.”
Rudy pushed the teens class to an entirely new level. The teens were presented with three pieces that Rudy choreographed for this particular session. Participants learned a group piece, trio and solo routine. “For a professional like him to have his work put on stage by them, makes them feel like they have truly become dancers,” said Perrius. These routines will be performed by students in June 2017 in the Nationals competition (Orlando, Florida). One student, Ana, said, “Learning from Rudy was a whole different experience. I was able to explore my technique and artistry in a new way. Working with a professional choreographer has helped me to grow.” Perrius explained that this celebrity experience is not typically available to small town studios, such as Progressions. Through significant efforts, Perrius has been able to establish and maintain relationships with these individuals to add to the school’s instruction repertoire. Perrius feels fortunate that the school is able to provide that interaction for their students. She also expressed that she wants others that do not attend their school to benefit from this type of experience as well, so she invites dancers

from other local studios to participate. Emma, another student who participated in Rudy’s class reflected on her experience, “Being a dance student in a small town can have its challenges, especially since we aren’t close to any major dance city. But being able to have Rudy Abreu here was truly inspiring. Going from seeing him on tv to seeing him in person was a career changing experience.” She also detailed that this class wasn’t all about dance it was about learning about a person’s life. “By hearing about his life story, it’s amazing to see where he came from and how he had the motivation to become a professional. This is something that I would love to be someday. I’ve been a successful dancer, but being taught by Rudy has opened my eyes to a world of possibilities.” Famous Russian and American dancer, Rudolf Nureyev said, “Technique is what you fall back on when you run out of inspiration.” Visiting professionals provide plenty of both to these young students. Dancing is an art form that should be cultivated and experienced. Who knows, in the near future maybe a local dancer will appear on So You Think You Can Dance and help inspire the next generation of performers.❖

The Greater Warrenton Chamber of Commerce Undergoes Metamorphosis in 2017 BY GREATER WARRENTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BOARD MEMBERS
T
he Greater Warrenton Chamber (GWCC), known for supporting the development of Fauquier’s small, start-up, and agriculture business interests, is undergoing a significant reorganization of the services it provides. The new GWCC will benefit members in several significant ways. In the latter part of 2009, the nation’s economic downturn was in full-effect. The town and county were not viewed as “business friendly”, and there was practically no support or resources for businesses that were either new or struggling. This was especially true for small and microbusinesses. A passionate group of local business leaders chose to address these challenges head-on, founding the GWCC. The “Triage Team” was created: a volunteer group of industry professionals providing confidential consultation and guidance to our community’s many struggling businesses. Thus, nearly 30 businesses and nonprofit organizations were supported and saved. The Triage Team is now known as the Business Assistance Team (BAT). Over time, as needs have changed, the GWCC responded. The GWCC has offered educational programs, networking opportunities, and community event sponsorships, all
at levels designed to be useful and affordable. The GWCC also took a very active role in helping our local officials pass business-friendly legislation. The result is that the GWCC has contributed to building a thriving, collaborative community of small businesses. Fast-forward to 2016, and the economic climate is quite different. Our town and county have strong business representation and our Department of Economic Development is thriving. Many additional resources serve our local businesses, providing affordable opportunities for them to grow. Now, the new GWCC is making several significant changes that will help our businesses and nonprofits in new and exciting ways. The new GWCC is expanding our Business Assistance Team concept to serve all our small business members; improving how we help our community succeed. Going forward the new GWCC will: 1. Connect members at no additional fee with local industry professionals whose core business services are critical to every successful small business. Through the offices of the new GWCC, these attorneys, bankers, insurance agents, marketing consultants and others will provide free consultations to our small, start-up, and struggling business owners.
“Simply put, it is our goal to put the things that every business needs at their fingertips” 2. Provide step-by-step guides for starting a business in the town or county, including introductions to the appropriate government agencies. 3. “In a way, Virginia Working Landscapes started right here,” Jocelyn Arundel Sladen says as she gestures around the living room of her Warrenton home, Walnut Springs Farm. Sladen has long been dedicated to conservation. She was a founding member of the Virginia Native Plant Society and has served on the boards

of organizations such as the Audubon Naturalist Society, Rachel’s Network, the Virginia Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, and Defenders of Wildlife. Sladen was also crucial to the formation of Virginia Working Landscapes (VWL). VWL is a landowner-tolandowner conservation initiative that works to conserve the biodiversity of native plants, birds, and pollinators in our region. VWL also promotes sustainable land use methods to local farmers, landowners, and others who share a responsibility for the stewardship of our countryside.
“This all began with grasslands,” Sladen says. “A lot of people that I talked to shared an interest in the disappearance of our grassland birds, which are disappearing at a faster rate than any other group of birds across the country. Everyone loves quail, and quail are dependent on grasslands with the right combination of native plants. And who wants a countryside where you can never hear the incredible music of Meadowlarks?” “So we decided to get a meeting together and talk about what we could do. We included people from the state and local agencies, the hunting community,

and conservation organizations like the Piedmont Environmental Council, Environmental Studies on the Piedmont, and the American Bird Conservancy.” In late 2009, the group began informal, but substantive, meetings convened by the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute at Front Royal, headed by ecologist Dr. Bill McShea. It was McShea who named the program Virginia Working Landscapes. “The thing was that so many people came,” Sladen continues. “There was suddenly such a meeting of minds of people who were farming to people who just wanted quail to hunt. The landscapes that have to work for us, let’s work for them a little bit. Can we find some new ways to keep our working landscapes? That was the basis of the idea.” “The whole business of Virginia Working Landscapes was to look for new approaches to preserve biodiversity around us and to see what works, landowner by landowner, even if we get some surprises…and we have.” One surprise involved the Bobolink, a species of bird whose populations have been in decline due to the loss of its nesting habitats. “Purists like me started out saying ‘Ah, we don’t want all those cool-season grasses!’ But one of our participants found that Bobolinks prefer a mix of warm and cool-season grasses. So the program is working.”
VWL’s unique initiative is driven by landowners and not, as Sladen puts it, “just a by-the-book repetition of restoration methods. We have the huge advantage of the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) adding scientific rigor.” VWL participants developed an idea of wildlife surveys on participating landowners’ properties, a concept that SCBI ecologist McShea was enthusiastic about. But who would complete these surveys? The SCBI did not have the staff for such an extensive research program, which covered public and private lands in fifteen counties. “So they landed on the idea of using citizen scientists,” Sladen says. “The first thing I thought, having known a lot of scientists in my life–and I’m married to one–was, ‘Oh, no, awful!’” Sladen chuckles. “You’re going to get people who know nothing to go out and try to identify plants–how would they know?’” Once the citizen scientists began their work in earnest, however, Sladen saw the merit of the approach. “Now I think it’s one of the key features of this program. It is getting so many people out in the field, to get to know their plants–as well as birds and insects. That’s when they’ll begin to care…and want to conserve them.” VWL trains citizen scientists for surveys in two instruction meetings. These are typically devoted to the mechanics of how they are to go out into
the field and find their survey points using GPS. Breeding bird surveys are conducted using the point count method for 10-minute intervals. Citizen scientists identify each bird, seen or heard, within 100 meters of a given survey pole during each of four visits to sites during the survey period (mid-May through the end of June). Around this time, VWL also hosts demonstration workshops. “There was a pollinator workshop earlier this year, and then a grassland workshops in June,” Sladen says. “They find landowners who are working with VWL who are willing to have people come in and see what they are doing. These events are very well-attended, which just reflects how interested people are in seeing what’s going to work.” Virginia Working Landscape’s scientists and staff also work with landowners to restore grasslands by seeding preferred native grasses such as Little Bluestem and Indian Grass, sometimes along with mixtures of native wildflowers. The wildflowers are included not only for their beauty, but because they are important to the ecosystem, specifically pollinators like bees, butterflies, ants, moths, and wasps. Sladen and her family for generations have been involved in conservation efforts both here and abroad. “We’re a family of conservationists, I’m afraid,” she laughs. Sladen was born

in Washington, DC, but her family purchased Wildcat Mountain Farm in 1941. “I grew up on Wildcat Mountain. It has some of the most beautiful grassland habitats you will find around here…small in area, but diverse.” “My father loved the outdoors and wildlife, and he quietly did so much,” Sladen recalls. In fact, Russell Arundel was part of a small group responsible for saving the Serengeti National Park from being divided up many years ago. “He flew to London with a petition signed by leading conservationists and got a hearing. It seems to have worked.” “Actually, he was the one who loved wildflowers and taught me to,” Sladen says of her father. “My mother was a gardener, basically.” However, gardening turned Sladen’s mother, Marjorie Arundel, into a conservationist as well. Arundel became well-known for her work to end the illegal harvesting and trade of wild-dug bulbs from Asia Minor. “My mother grew and loved little species bulbs until she learned more about the bulb trade and the damage it was doing to the plants in the wild,” she relates. People were digging up wild plants in Turkey and the Pyrenees, stripping the land of wild bulbs like baby Narcissus, daffodils, and the ancestors to modern tulips. “So she got the Garden Club of America and the World Wildlife Fund interested in the whole trade. Finally,
Left: Monarda didyma ‘Jacob Cline’ (foreground) and Monarda citriodora ‘Lemon Beebalm’ (background) draw pollinators to Tammy Schmitt’s backyard garden. Right: Native plant Monarda punctata, or Spotted Beebalm, grows in Tammy Schmitt’s pollinator-friendly backyard.
there was enough pressure to get the Dutch bulb wholesalers to agree to label all bulbs that were dug in the wild as such.” Marjorie Arundel was awarded the Order of the Golden Ark by Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands for her conservation efforts. “They don’t have to dig them anymore,” Sladen says of the wild species bulbs. “It’s not economical. But at that time, it was a major accomplishment.” In the 1960s, Sladen’s parents donated much of their Wildcat Mountain property to the Nature Conservancy, which continues to maintain the 655acre property as a nature preserve. One of Sladen’s daughters has taken ownership of Wildcat Mountain Farm, having previously lived at Chilton’s Gate Farm. “That was one of the properties under the Virginia Working Landscapes survey. It’s a wonderful piece of land,” Sladen says. VWL citizen scientists identified five regional birds of concern living there, including Grasshopper Sparrows, Eastern Meadowlarks, and Eastern Kingbirds. When Jocelyn and her husband, Dr. Bill Sladen, first moved to Walnut Springs Farm, she remembers thinking, “It was as if the Good Lord was saying, ‘Okay, you’ve been talking a good game. Now do something about THIS piece of land.’ ”
Walnut Springs Farm was 50 acres of ruined hayfields, and about 90% of plants growing there were non-native, invasive species. “I have been trying to restore it to grassland bird habitat. We do not cut the hay until August, until after the Grasshopper Sparrows and Meadowlarks are finished nesting. It’s wonderful to see them increase…my own very small triumph!” Currently, Sladen is allowing a neighbor to graze about 50 cattle on her land, using a conservation technique that involves moving the animals every two days to a different piece of land. “It could help with my knapweed problem,” she says. And it isn’t just the land underfoot at Walnut Springs that is utilized for the good of native species. “Our board fence line along the road is in terrible shape,” Sladen says. “It should be torn down. But that fence is for the Grasshopper Sparrows and Meadowlarks. As I walk down in the morning, I’ll hear about four or five Grasshopper Sparrows, and they’ll follow me, hopping along the fence as I’m walking until they come to the end of their territory. Then they stop following me, and the next batch picks up in their territory. And then there will be a Meadowlark, and then there will be Bluebirds on the next section of fence, and that fence is the most alive place in the world.” It’s the sort of place Sladen hopes to conserve for future generations. “I think that when people started Virginia Working Landscapes, it was with a conviction that there are more people out there who care than you may think. Ideally, I hope people develop a wider, deeper concern for our natural landscape, and through that caring and some determination, preserve as much as we can and even create newer landscapes that work for plants, pollinators, and birds, as well as for the people who are living here. And eventually, with enough effort, we can start to shape better public policies geared to the landscape.” ❖

A CONTINUING LEGACY The Frost Diner Owners Honor a Local Landmark BY AIMÉE O’GRADY
T
he Stuart extended family is large, very large. In 2000, with six children at home, Curtis and his wife of 35 years, Lisa, purchased Frost Diner on Broadview Avenue in Warrenton. A local landmark, the diner has served residents home cooking since 1955. Stuart worked for the previous owner, Leonard Milliken, at the 29 Diner in Fairfax when he was in high school. After graduation, he spent over 30 years in the construction business but kept in touch with Leonard by stopping at Frost Diner when he passed through Warrenton to check on job sites. When Leonard’s wife Jeannie, teasingly asked him when he was going to buy the diner, he gave it some serious consideration. “As a kid, my brother and I would alternate who went with my dad to bring our grandparents to the doctor each month. After the doctor appointment, we would stop at Peoples Drug Store in Manassas for lunch. Everyone always greeted my grandfather and grandmother, Luther and Minnie, by name. And it was the same way at the 29 Diner. It made an impression on me,” recalls Stuart.
When Lisa asked why he was buying the diner, his answer was, “it is something from the past that has stood the test of time. The counter and tabletops are all original, so are the stools. It’s a neat lifestyle that hasn’t changed much over the years.” The diner is very family-oriented. Everyone cares about their jobs but also about each other. Stuart feels that the restaurant has blessed him in many ways, recalling, “My grandmother once said that if you can count your close friends on one hand, then you’ve accomplished a lot. We have a lot of friends here.” After 16 years of ownership, diner patrons truly have become family. “The regular customers come in at the same time every day, they sit on the same stool, and order the same thing. Some get downright annoyed if their sweet tea isn’t waiting for them when they come in,” says Lisa. Community members often thank Stuart for what he does for the community through the diner. In return, he thanks them for their patronage. “The kids are great supporters of the diner. They come in before school, after football games, and some work
here. I have watched a lot of high school kids in the community become adults. It’s been great,” says Stuart about the loyalty of his student customers. The diner has been awarded the best place for breakfast all but once by Warrenton Lifestyle Magazine’s annual Best of Warrenton poll, and while Stuart is proud of the recognition, he { JANUARY 2017 |

just does his job. He recalls a saying Leonard used to use, “‘Focusing on your own business won’t leave you time to worry about anyone else.’ I don’t worry about what other people are doing, I just get on with what I’m doing,” he confesses. But he does admit that the 6 a.m.-2 p.m. shift is the busiest and the popularity of their breakfast has encouraged the diner to offer it all day long. With a modest upbringing, Stuart has made a nice life for himself. “We didn’t have a lot of money, but never needed for anything either. My father was a carpenter and taught me about hard work. My construction business had a lot of good customers back in the day that allowed me to buy the diner.” Five years ago, he left the construction industry and now focuses on the restaurants he owns and operates with his family. “We plan to stay in this business until we retire,” he announces. Until that time, the Stuart family continues to serve home-cooked meals to area residents, some of whom come in when they have nowhere else to go. “We stay open on Thanksgiving Day until 2 p.m. We have regulars who will come in to say hello before visiting with family, and others who come in because they don’t have family to visit. We’re their family.” Stuart says. Each December, the Stuarts host a party at
Peppers in Culpeper for their employees, as well as any regular customers who want to come. It’s their way of offering thanks to their employees and customers, who they regard as one large family, for everything they have done for the Stuarts over the past year. ❖
Above: Original print of the The Times Democrat newspaper article (July 13, 1955) announcing the opening of Frost Diner still hangs on the wall for patrons to see.

PRESIDENTIAL BIOGRAPHIES BY JENNIFER SCHULTZ, YOUTH SERVICES LIBRARIAN
W
hat do you think of when you hear “biographies”? Do you think of a dry, long tome, a necessary evil for a college or high school paper? Think again! There are plenty of biographies that are ideal for a leisurely read. With Presidents’ Day right around the corner, now is a good time to delve into a presidential biography. The following is a sampling of some of my favorite presidential biographies, all available at the Fauquier County Public Library.
The American Presidents Series If you find the thickness of most biographies daunting, The American Presidents series, published by Henry Holt & Co. and written by an impressive variety of presidential history scholars (www. americanpresidentsseries. com), is just the thing for you. These slim volumes capture the important aspects of each president’s life (40 volumes so far).

The chaos of the early American republic, especially the danger that the country faced even after the Revolution ended, is smartly captured, as is the overwhelming attention paid to the very private George Washington. His painful relationship with his mother, his deep conflicts with slavery, his strong marriage and his adversarial relationship with Thomas Jefferson are intimately revealed. This is a doorstopper that goes beyond the schoolroom myths of our first President.
I recommend reading the Washington and Adams biographies back to back; it’s astonishing to learn about Adams’s glittering life at the French court while Washington is begging for supplies for his troops. Sandwiched between the can-do-no-wrong Washington and the ingenious Jefferson, Adams’s powerful life story was usually overshadowed until McCullough published his brilliant biography.
John Quincy Adams: A Public Life, A Private Life by Paul C. Nagel John Quincy Adams had an astonishing childhood spent abroad. He was practically groomed for the presidency from birth. After his demoralizing defeat for a second term, he served in the Senate for 17 years and was a strong abolitionist. Nagel brings to life his devotion to wife Louisa (the first of two foreign-born first ladies), with whom he suffered deep personal losses, and his complicated relationship with his mother, Abigail.

Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President
Being Nixon: A Man Divided by Evan Thomas
by Candice Millard James Garfield doesn’t loom large in presidential history, but Millard brings this fascinating man (and time) to life. Garfield reached out to German immigrant communities, fought against Washington corruption and advocated for civil rights. Garfield might have survived his assassination but for the unsanitary medical practices of his time. Alexander Graham Bell plays a prominent role in this engrossing read; his attempt to find the bullet lodged in Garfield via a metal detector is fascinating.
Theodore Rex by Edmund Norris Norris captured the life of Theodore Roosevelt in a three-volume biography. Part II, Theodore Rex, details his life during the presidency. You can read Theodore Rex without having to read the first volume. Compensating for a sickly childhood, Roosevelt prized sportsmanship and military strength in his adulthood. He was also a huge bookworm (as a skilled speed reader, he would read an entire book before breakfast) and an early conservationist. The public was fascinated with his boisterous family, especially his daughter, Alice. Roosevelt suffered deep personal losses, survived an assassination attempt (and continued his public speaking engagement as the Secret Service desperately tried to get him to seek medical attention) and had an active life postpresidency. He was truly larger than life; Norris fully fleshes out this extraordinary character.

The Presidents Club: Inside the World’s Most Exclusive Fraternity
Richard Nixon is probably one of the more difficult presidents to analyze and explain. His Quaker upbringing, extreme social anxiety, and paranoia is balanced with his intelligence and desire to be a peacemaker. Watergate, naturally, is discussed at length, as is his later life as elder statesman. This is at times an infuriating and even tragic book, but a worthwhile and humanizing look at one of our most controversial presidents.
by Nancy Gibbs Unlike traditional presidential history books, this book focuses on the relationship presidents have with each other (starting with Harry Truman and Herbert Hoover and concluding with Barack Obama’s first term). This is a powerful and moving reading experience.
The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft and the Golden Age of Journalism by Doris Kearns Goodwin Presidential historian grand dame Goodwin (all her books are must-reads for presidential history buffs) delivers a first-rate, up-close-and-personal look at the long-lasting and complicated friendship between Roosevelt and Taft. Although the men had a close relationship during Roosevelt’s terms, it soured when Taft neglected to carry forward Roosevelt’s progressive policies.

A
s the most popular hike in the Shenandoah National Park, over 100,000 hikers visit Old Rag each year looking for the adventure of scrambling on rocks, through crevices, and over boulders. At 3,268 feet the mountain’s summit rewards its hikers with the most spectacular panoramic views of the Blue Ridge to the north and the rounded peak of Hawksbill Mountain to the west.
Hiking Old Rag Mountain by Moonlight
The Trails of Old Rag Reaching the summit of Old Rag can be done in three ways. The most popular route is via the Ridge Trail, an 8.7 mile loop with 2,300 feet elevation gain. The Ridge Trail hike is recommended because the scrambling to go uphill is easier and more enjoyable. A second route, mostly known only to climbers heading for the cliffs on the mountain, starts from the Berry Hollow trailhead, which shortens the distance to the summit to 2.8 miles one way, with about 1,800 feet of elevation gain. Old Rag has over 100 established routes scattered at various crags which offer some outstanding climbs. A third route of about 15 miles starts from the Skyline Drive

and involves significantly more elevation gains to reach the summit than the other two trails and is only chosen by some of the tough hikers who are looking for a hard workout.
Adventures Of Hiking Old Rag Each season offers a different view and distinctive characteristics of this magnificent mountain. Spring awakens new life with pink mountain laurel greeting the hiker, while summer in its fullness presents the trails with the melodies of songbirds. With fall comes the changing of the colors, and in winter the stillness covers trees and rocks with snow and ice. Is there a best time to visit Old Rag? On a picture-perfect summer or early fall weekend there are crowds of visitors to Old Rag, imposing waits on the trail and congestion at the outcrops. Due to the popularity of this hike you are rarely alone on this rugged trail, even at night. Some people hike up in the early morning hours to watch the sunrise, and some people, like the Boots ‘n Beer club, like to hike Old Rag in moonlight. For six years Boots ’n Beer has been hiking Old Rag in moonlight. This hike must be

accomplished during a full moon in order to have sufficient light on the trails, and is only possible when all the leaves are off the trees. Unfortunately, in the late fall of 2015 and in early winter months of 2016, not one of the full moon nights was conducive to such an adventure due to either heavy clouds or icy conditions. This fall, however, bestowed us the gift of the Supermoon!
Hiking Old Rag in the Supermoon Astrologer Richard Nolle coined the name Supermoon in 1979. He defined it as “a new or full moon which occurs with the moon at or near its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit.” In short, the earth, moon, and sun are all in a line, with the moon in its nearest approach to earth. The most recent Supermoon occurrence was on November 14, 2016. This was the first Supermoon occurrence since January 26, 1948, and will not occur again until November 25, 2034.
The weather forecast for Saturday, November 16, promised the clearest night with seasonal temperatures and a 96 percent visible moon. It was the rare, perfect night for a bunch of Boots ’n Beer hikers to tackle Old Rag. Around eight o’clock at night we started uphill through the dense hardwood forest on the moonlit trail, the youngest of our eight hikers being 31 and the oldest being 74 years of age. Our chatter, mixed with the initial fast hiking pace to warm up, hid the frequent stubbing of our hiking boots on roots and rocks until our eyes adjusted to different shades of the moonlit trail. The moon itself was hanging like a large, unpolished silver disk right over the horizon. One hiker wondered aloud, “You think we’ll encounter bears?” There is certainly a lot of wildlife in the Shenandoah National Park. On the lower slopes of Old Rag mountain you may encounter black bears, deer, fox, chipmunks, squirrels, and, on rare occasions, a bobcat. But on this
night, our chatter, laughter, and clanking of the hiking sticks must have signaled the bears to run. We only spotted one white-tailed deer the entire night. When we reached the first switchback, our talking subsided as we began the zig zag up the mountain. Our breathing became heavier. Hiking in silence, we only rested once at an outcrop before entering the world of rocks and boulders. Soon after crossing half a mile of rock, the trail descended into a narrow crevice about 8 feet deep. We found ourselves hiking through a huge crack in a granite wall which resembled a cave. Later, we came up to a natural rock staircase only to be greeted by a large granite boulder wedged in the middle which we all had to crawl under. In some of the more difficult passages, we needed the additional help of our headlamps in order to see where we could locate rocks to grip or where to pull or place a foot to push ourselves onto the trail. On those occasions, hikers lent a hand and helped one another over boulders, through crevices, and sometimes with the simple push from behind that can get a hiker unstuck. Knowing you can depend on each other builds great teamwork and camaraderie! We continued the moonlit trek, passing dark silhouettes of huge round boulders rising up against the starry night before finally stepping out onto the mountain’s summit. There it was! The gigantic, breathtaking Supermoon, so bright we could have read the headlines of the newspaper. Bathed in its glow, unhindered by wind or cold, we thoroughly enjoyed a well-deserved midnight snack under the stars. The Old Rag Saddle Trail, leading into Weakley Hollow and down the fire road, was the return route. We arrived back at the parking lot around three in the morning where we all enjoyed a crisp beer out of the cooler. By the time we arrived back in Warrenton we decided on a hearty breakfast at the diner, and that first cup of hot coffee never tasted so good! ❖

So you want to be a
Winemaker?
Opportunities for those aspiring individuals exist locally BY STEVE OVIATT
V
irginia is becoming well known for its growing wine industry and the increasing quality of its wines. This has led to increasing interest in vineyards as an agricultural endeavor and wine making as a hobby or career. However, local education for aspiring wine makers has been sparse; most people learn by reading and researching on their own, trial and error, or by consulting friends and family who also have an interest in wine making.

Normally, the result of these initial efforts by the novice winemaker are not drinkable, so most give up and move on to another hobby. Some lucky individuals have either apprenticed under a practicing winemaker, or attended schools like Virginia Tech or the University of California at Davis. A formal program on providing vineyard management and winemaking skills at Lord Fairfax Community College in Warrenton closed several years ago. To fill the void, the Vint Hill Craft Winery has been offering aspiring winemakers opportunities to make wines in state-of-the-art facilities under the supervision of experienced winemakers. This initiative has been responsible for helping several local wineries open and thrive over the years. However, the instruction at Vint Hill deals with winemaking only, not growing and cultivating grapes. For the agricultural management

portion of the process, most local vineyards hire skilled individuals, pay consultants, and learn by trial and error. But soon there will be another local resource for those wanting to learn. This spring, the Horticulture Department at Northern Virginia Community College will be offering several courses in Viticulture and Enology at its Loudoun Campus and at Hillsborough Vineyards. These classes may be taken “a la carte” or can be part of a twoyear horticulture degree with a specialization in Viticulture and Enology. The curriculum is modeled on a similar, successful program at a North Carolina Community College. Intro to Viticulture (VEN 100) will be a thorough study of what it takes to start a vineyard from the ground up and manage it for the production of premium wine grapes. The focus of the course
includes the cost of establishing a vineyard, canopy management, pests and pesticides, harvest parameters, and more. Intro to Winemaking (VEN 130) will give students an understanding of the world’s winegrowing regions, theory on sensory analysis, and basic winemaking processes for white and red table wines, sparkling wines, and fortified and dessert wines. Sensory Perception of Wine (VEN 293) will teach students, through blind tasting of a wine, to accurately describe the color, aroma, scents, flavors, alcohol level, tannin level, acid level, age, condition, region of origin, grape variety, and quality of the wine being sampled. Upon completion of this course, individuals will be able to convey this information to others through a well-crafted tasting note. Topics in Vineyard Pruning (VEN 195-001L) will give students actual
pruning exercises and instruction in various pruning methods, measuring pruning cane weights and bud viability. This is an outdoor class. Topics in Wine Aging I (VEN 195060L) will allow students to work in a professional cellar to experience the aging process of both red and white wines. Individuals will get hands-on experience in a variety of skills such as stirring/ topping barrels, racking, oxygen management, and lab analysis. Topics in Wine Aging II (VEN 195-080L) will allow students to continue the cellar work during the pre-bottling process of red and white wine. This instruction will include blending/bench trials, filtering and lab analysis, and bottling line operation. Registration for these classes closes January 6th. For more information, visit the Northern Virginia Community College web site at www.nvcc.edu. ❖
