Warm March wishes to everyone. We did survive the snowiest February on record and I’m glad to put it behind us. How many of you saw the Extreme Makeover show led by Warrenton’s Burch Builders Group? We watched it and I assure you that there was not a dry eye anywhere in sight. What moving stories! Our hats are off to all the local people and firms that contributed but especially to the Fishing School and the Tripp Johnson family whose homes were rebuilt because they give every day to their communities. I’m sure the episode will win an Emmy. Marion Maggiolo and Horse Country are celebrating 40 years in Warrenton so we asked writer George Rowand to share some of her magic with us. The uniqueness of Marion’s stores coupled with her dazzling smile make Horse Country a very Warrenton place. Even if you don’t ride, it is worth a visit. The home furnishings and personal accessories are fine products. 2010 is the year when Warrenton will come together and build the Fun For All playground at the Warrenton Aquatic Recreational Facility. As the name suggests, this playground will be constructed for all children focusing on the accessibility for children with disabilities. Designed to help with physical, social and psychological development, the goal is to create a park where all children and their families can come together and have fun! The health system’s fresh new website at www.fauquierhealth. org is a great place to start if you are trying to research a particular medical issue or treatment. In addition to hosting information about Fauquier Health – everything from orthopedic services to hours of operation for the hospital’s Bistro to details about the new assisted living facility – the website also has easy-tonavigate libraries of information about specific health problems. Teaching Students to Seek the Challenge, Make a Difference, and Live an Extraordinary Life This month, Wakefield School in The Plains is featured as the sixth in a series of guest columns from local educators. The purpose is to introduce the public to the distinct features of each school and describe their curriculum, philosophy and atmosphere. We believe that parents know what system will work best for each individual child.

When you think of a “classical education” do you imagine a dusty teacher in a tweed jacket lecturing his or her students on the finer points of different Roman emperors, or the differences between moods of verbs (what, verbs have moods?)? Do you think students who choose a classical education become expert at things like philosophy and grammar, but not things that are useful for doing anything, well, useful? Think again. How useful do you think it would be to study architecture for a year in order to draft designs for a house? What about working out the best role for Ethanol in the economy and environment? Want to figure out how to “over-clock” your computer?

Are you driven to define the common themes in the poetry of Walt Whitman and the lyrics of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen? All of these have been recent topics of year-long studies at Wakefield in the Upper School (grades 9-12). Not too dusty, huh? At Wakefield, the classical model encourages both precision and creativity. People often ask me why they should choose a school so noted for its classical approach in an age of rapid change. this challenge call for an education that teaches observation, hypothesis, evaluation, and articulation? Again and again during the fourteen-year Wakefield journey, students are asked to engage in this process and come up with their own answers to the questions their teachers pose. Finding educated answers to complex questions is the centerpiece of classical education. In the Middle School (grades 6-8), students face this challenge in the various projects they complete in literature, composition, science, and history. In the first grade they practice probability with M&Ms – predicting the likelihood of getting a bag with only certain color candies.

But if you talk to people who are leading companies, forming their own companies, or creating new ways of solving the challenges our society faces, they will tell you this: the most valuable skill and knowledge set is the ability to understand new conditions in the workplace/economy/society, create and test informed solutions to the challenges those conditions present, and articulate the best solution in a convincing manner. This is what a good, contemporary classical education provides. That’s what Wakefield fifth graders do in their science class when they have to design a complex machine to perform a household function using as integral parts all six simple machines – and it has to work. Each November these machines are displayed for the whole school, and what a collection of labor-saving devices they are! Along the way, the students completed that process of observation, hypothesis, articulation, and proof. Does that classical process matter anymore? Consider the often-cited challenge of education in the 21st century: “preparing people for jobs that don’t exist in industries that have not been created to solve problems that aren’t problems yet.” Doesn’t 10

Wakefield we prepare our students to flourish in college in just that way, with the result that, according to former UVA admissions dean Jack Blackburn, Wakefield students maintain the second-highest GPA of all undergraduate students enrolled at UVA. At the same time, there is more to a classical education than academic classes. Activities that train the brain and the body are essential, and athletics and the performing arts train both mind and muscle. Both of them also present a challenge distinct from the individual challenge of academics. How challenging it is to assume a role on stage, or to learn a new sport, and what great benefits accrue from those challenges for each student and the whole community! Wakefield’s specialinterest clubs, student publications, leadership and community service opportunities provide the chance to build something that represents a group effort for the benefit of the whole community. In every case, students learn the risks and rewards of leadership, and by repeated experience, how to lead. A classical education is a dialogue between teachers and students in which both knowledge and diverse intellectual skills are taught and Wakefield Continued on page 12

A classical, liberal arts education broadens your focus rather than narrowing it. It is an education that trains students to think for themselves, to look for proof rather than accept assumptions, and to work through a problem in a methodical, creative way to make a contribution of their own. It is the education for a future in which discovery will continue to be the main theme. Finally, because a classical education is about the search for truth, in whatever field you study, it is also about how to use the truth you discover. Our mission states that we “provide students with the fundamental knowledge and the critical thinking skills to distinguish that which is true from that which is not, and the strength of character to use that wisdom.” That strength of character involves the classical virtues of courage, prudence, temperance, and justice. At Wakefield we have adapted these elements of Plato’s 12

Republic as the cardinal virtues of the school, and they form the foundation of our community expectations. At the heart of a classical education is observation, hypothesis, and empirical testing – the roots of the scientific method. Those who think such an education does not have “real world” applications need to understand that it is organically based in the real world, and moves from observed fact to general theory. That process helped humans identify physical laws such as gravity, and develop philosophical truths such as justice and economic theories like capitalism. Is that kind of knowledge and that kind of critical thinking no longer valuable? In an age of information overload, we think it is all the more valuable, giving our students the tools to help sift through and separate information from useful knowledge. Wakefield School is an independent school offering a classical education to 464 students in pre-school through twelfth grade. Founded in 1972 in Rappahannock County, Wakefield School moved to The Plains in 1996, and in June 2009 graduated its 30th class. Peter Quinn has been headmaster at Wakefield School since July 1996. Previously he taught and coached at Hackley School (Tarrytown, NY), Peddie School (Hightstown, NJ), and served as Director of Admissions at Peddie. He is a graduate of Washington & Lee University (B.A.) and the University of Virginia (M.A.). He started his career in 1978, teaching at Wakefield when it was in Rappahannock County. have to ask myself how in the world a month with the fewest days could have room for so much snow? If you’re like me, you have shoveled until you feel like your arms are falling off.

However, the snow has not stopped Main Street merchants from opening and offering great “snow” day deals. The restaurants are offering wonderful specials, and most say it’s nice just to be out and about in Old Town. The point-to-point races wo;; be coming up (if weather allows). Be sure to shop Old Town for the essential tailgating foods, flowers, clothing, and specialty items. Stop by the local restaurants and pubs after a cold day at the races. Molly’s Irish Pub and The Scoti are certainly looking forward to celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. Stop in and join them! What Should I Do With the Rest of My Life? It is a common refrain. Be it the loss of a job at middle age or an impending retirement, many of us find ourselves asking “What Should I Do with the Rest of My Life?”

Frankel takes his subject seriously and he should. He has a similar story. He can also launch into a flowery, detailed description when the topic is worthy. Reading his description of Loretta Thayer’s homemade pies in the chapter devoted to this remarkable woman, I was taken to a place far away, from long ago, where the taste of a favorite dish can bring back so many memories. I could hear in Bruce Frankel’s voice how much he enjoyed this project. He told me, “The experience of spending time with the people in the book has been a life-altering gift to me. If the book never earned a dime, I would be richer for it. I remain in close touch with most of them and they continue to inspire me on a daily basis, with the way they approach their missions as well as the humanity with which they conduct their lives. They altered my idea of life’s timeline, as I say in the introduction, and affirmed that success is not measured by one’s bank account. Hospice of the Rapidan and Fauquier Health to Host a National Teleconference on “Living with Grief: Cancer and End-of-Life Care” For 17 years the Hospice Foundation of America has presented a nationally recognized teleconference addressing issues related to grief and bereavement to more than 125,000 people in 2,000 communities through satellite broadcast and web cast. This year’s conference, “Living with Grief: Cancer and End-of-Life Care” will be broadcast Wednesday, March 24th, from 1:30pm to 4:00pm. Hospice of the Rapidan and Fauquier Health will jointly host the live broadcast of this year’s teleconference, which is available for free to area health care professionals and interested residents. The conference may be viewed at Fauquier Health, 500 Hospital Drive, Warrenton, in the Sycamore Room A. This annual program has been instrumental in educating health care professionals and families on issues affecting end-of-life care. The program provides an opportunity for a wide variety of professionals – including doctors, nurses, funeral directors,

psychologists, educators, social workers and grief counselors – to share ideas and obtain continuing education credits. A panel of distinguished physicians, ethicists, educators and hospice experts will focus on “Living with Grief: Cancer and End-of-Life Care.” The program will address care options related to cancer diagnoses as well as loss and grief reactions for patients, families and professional caregivers. The teleconference will also examine psychosocial aspects of cancer, pain management, and ethical issues related to the disease. Continuing education credits are available for many professionals, including most nurses, social workers, case managers, certified nursing assistants, home health aides, clergy, psychologists, funeral directors and art therapists. Those interested in receiving continuing education credit must also attend a half hour live session immediately following the broadcast. There is a continuing education credit fee of $25 for

on-line processing. Admission is free but reservations are highly recommended as the number of seats is limited. Celebrating 40 Fantastic Years Serving Hunt Country By George Rowand Marion Maggiolo was having trouble finding a job, so she found a career instead. “My father said, ‘Until you get a job, why don’t you go down and work at the store?’” Maggiolo remembered. Now the owner of Horse Country in Warrenton is close to celebrating her fourth decade in business. “I never dreamed that I would be here 40 years later,” she said, “but I rode and showed horses in 4-H, so I’ve been around this my whole life.” Running any kind of business for

40 years is a remarkable achievement, especially in retail, and Maggiolo credits a wide variety of sources for her success. “The customers did it,” she began. “People would introduce me to new customers, to new suppliers, and, of course, the people I’ve had working here have been the best.”

Originally located on the Warrenton bypass, Horse Country moved into its current spot on Alexandria Pike 20 years ago. Maggiolo said that the move improved her business.

“I’m pleased to be in Old Town,” she said. “When we were on the bypass, we got people who were driving past on the road, but here, we are a destination. People make plans to come in the store. And I like to interact with the town. I like to send visitors to the restaurants, shops and art galleries on Main Street.” She clearly enjoys her clientele. “The people that walk in the front door are so interesting,” she stated. “They are from all over the world. “The customers let me know what they want,” she continued. “Many of my customers grew up wearing beautiful riding jackets and breeches. When good riding clothes were not available any more, I went to England and found suitable cloths and makers that would produce small orders for me. I caught a wave of people who still wanted those traditional goods.” A walk through the store reveals pretty much all things horse related, from tack to jackets to jewelry to bumper stickers supporting foxhunting and the equestrian lifestyle. “In 1985, we started with a catalog, and it took off,” Maggiolo said. “We started with drawings done by local people, and then went to black-andwhite photos, and before you knew it, it was all color. And now we’ve gone digital.” Horse Country produces two catalogs a year. Picking up a catalog, she continued. “All the catalogs mean something to me. I want it to be a very personal story. I think that the photography is fabulous. We design it, shoot it, print it and mail it. So many decisions.” The latest 80-page catalog carries a motto for the year, just like the ones that preceded it. This one speaks to the times: “Forward.” “I started to hear a bit of optimism from my customers last summer,” Maggiolo said. As she has done before, she has adapted to the reigning economic conditions. “Last year I created a lot of products to suit the economic times,” she said. “We designed a group of gifts under $50 and 24

“My business wouldn’t work just anywhere in the U.S.,” Maggiolo said. “This is horse country ... foxhunting, showing, racing. That lifestyle is intense here. I think people appreciate what I do. I sell all over the country.” Probably best known for the hunting attire the shop carries, Maggiolo said, Horse Country aims to sell to people who want a certain tradition, and who want to have a choice. She said that she is actively involved in the whole process. “I find the cloth and line up the factory. I do the designs and send it off,” she explained. “I have many patterns. I cut everything the old way, which is a classic coat with more pockets and custom details. For women, it takes a whole lot more tailoring to make a traditional jacket. In addition, I always wanted to have inventory. We have six makers for women’s jackets and five makers for men’s jackets.

I love it.’ “It’s like the Dublin Bracelet,” she continued. “I’m in Ireland, and I bought this one special antique piece. It took a few years to find the right company to reproduce it and I’m only doing 50 pieces.” Maggiolo said that many of the men’s ties she designs are made in America but the silk is woven in Como, Italy. Horse Country Continued from page 24 “At the old store, whenever I wanted to sell some merchandise, I would put it out front with some hay bales, and every time the traffic light changed, I’d get four or five customers pulling into the lot. Now I’ve opened Leftovers on Fifth Street in Old Town as a clearance store. That is one of the best things I’ve done. It’s only open two days a week, and it allows me to get more room in here for new inventory.” She said that family, friends and members of the local business community have been supportive of her along the way. Her brothers and sisters helped move seasonal inventory up and down steps, to and from auctions and storage facilities since the beginning. In 1990, a friend suggested Maggiolo start a tabloid-style newspaper for ongoing marketing. page coffee table book, A Centennial View, published by the Master of Fox Hounds Association, about foxhunting in North America today. “I was chairman of the committee that got the writers, the photographers, the project manager,” she said. “I’d never done anything like that, and I just wanted to.” Forty years on, Maggiolo said that she wouldn’t want to change anything about her career. “I’ve been working 6 days a week since I’ve been open,” she recalled. “I’d rather be here than anywhere else. I’m surrounded by wonderful people and beautiful things.” And she is glad to be in Warrenton. “I thank Mom and Dad every day for coming here,” she said.

Fun For All Playground Inches Closer to Ground Breaking by Krysta Norman

ohn Schlenker and Linda Reid understand the value of “playtime.” Dedicated parents and Fauquier County locals, the two developed a distinctive project for our community in July 2007 called the Claude Moore Fun for All Playground (the Claude Moore Foundation was a major donor). As the name suggests, this playground will be constructed for all children focusing on accessibility for children with disabilities. Designed to help with physical, social and psychological development, the goal is to create a park where all children and their families can come together and have fun! The pair, supported by the Town of Warrenton, contacted a not-for-profit organization called the Warrenton Fields Association (WFA) that has been responsible for the development and maintenance of the fields adjacent to the Warrenton Aquatics and Recreation Facility (WARF). The WFA agreed to allow the Fun For All Playground to collect funds for the playground

under the umbrella of WFA’s 501c3 organization. WFA and the Town of Warrenton’s Mayor George Fitch were instrumental in ensuring that the fields would be constructed with accessibility as a priority. Since the completion of the fields, the WFA has now been devoting its time to raising awareness and funding for a 8,000+ square foot play space at the WARF for the children of Fauquier County. Traditional playgrounds allow only limited mobility for those with disabilities. “We want to have a playground for everyone,” said Reid who has been working with All Recreation of Virginia, Inc. to incorporate innovative ideas, materials, and configurations to encourage a fun and challenging environment for children. The area will have a rubberized surface that will allow for those with wheeled equipment and comfort for unexpected slips and falls. The equipment will be made of bright colors to aid the visually impaired and Fun for All Continued on page 32

Fun for All Continued from page 30 will be textured to stimulate sensory development. Bells, whistles and chimes will be installed to teach the relationship between cause and effect. There will also be quiet nooks and crannies for those children who need to escape sensory overload. A barrier free ramp system will be integrated to allow children in wheelchairs to reach the highest platforms as well as extra railings and hand holds. Swings and spring toys will have hand holds and back supports to assist and monkey bars will be lowered for easier reach. These simple modifications to the traditional playground will bring much needed benefits to the children. In addition, there will be challenging equipment for ALL children, like the play web and rock wall. The Fun for All Playground will give the children of Fauquier a place to play, learn and grow. “Children of all abilities develop more when challenged in social situations,” Reid stated. “They learn about teamwork, fun and sportsmanship, as well as socialization and sharing”. Schlenker added. “If typical children and children with special needs learn to play together as small children then they won’t even notice a difference when they are older, which teaches acceptance.” Most would assume this playground is only for children…. but is it? ”It’s not just for kids,” said Schlenker. “This playground will make it easier for disabled parents, grandparents and caretakers to watch their kids and

participate in the fun!” Unfortunately, a Boundless playground is costly, due to the specialized features required to meet the strict guidelines set by the federal government in the Americans with Disabilities Act. The total project is estimated to cost $300,000. So far the WFA has been successful in raising $207,500 through charitable donations from the community. The Claude Moore

Foundation, Town of Warrenton, Knights of Columbus, Fauquier Hospital, and the Warrenton Jaycee’s are just a few of the generous local businesses that have contributed. The project is still in need of roughly another $100,000 in order to begin the groundbreaking that is tentatively planned for spring. The construction would take an estimated eight to ten weeks to complete which would have the Fun for All Playground open for public use in the fall. Schlenker is encouraging businesses to make donations and would like to see more families and individuals volunteer their time in order to reach their goal. “We would love for the community

to volunteer to do extra projects,” Schlenker said, with visions of the playground surrounded by a masonry wall, picnic area, and landscaped gardens. On April 3, the 3rd Annual Fun for All Day hosted at the WARF will kick off with the Fun Run/Walk/Wheel 5k followed by Easter egg hunts. The hope is to show the community the purpose of the organization and the necessity of a Boundless playground. Says Schlenker, “Our primary goal for the Fun for All Day is to get the word out about the playground effort and what it means to the area, “as well to provide a lot of family fun! Our secondary goal is to raise funds for the playground – we are hoping for $10,000$15,000 from this event.” The two previous events boasted a family fun run with a celebratory t-shirt for participants, indoor swimming, live entertainment and, of course, food! Schlenker sees the WARF and surrounding property as the “crown jewel of Warrenton” with its accessible ball fields, indoor pools, skate park and hockey rink. The Claude Moore Fun for All Playground seems as if it would be an excellent addition to this package.

Silent Chaos These clouds of people surround me. People whose voices are choked out by the chaotic overtones of our own lives. A glance to my right brings into view a girl in a mini skirt with tattoos up her arms. In an instant rush of focused thought, I wonder… Is she too breaking apart? Does she believe in hope? Perhaps her life seems great. Maybe these souls that we judge by one glance are entirely different than what they seem. Or maybe she stands there waiting for someone to run up to her and reach past whatever she might be struggling with. But this frenzied world knows nothing of hope and silence and peace. I step outside and stare at a soundless canopy of fate. A noiseless loss of life. Because everybody walked by and everybody forgot. What if we demonstrate to them how to look up. Remind them when you fall you remember what the ground feels like, but if you stay face down in the dirt, you won’t realize that stars shine. This blinding yet unheard of chaos covers the world, and I can’t solve it. But maybe if I lead by example. Maybe if I stop trying to climb out of this hole. Maybe if I let go and realize that I can’t do anything on my own. Perhaps if I feel the chains of those who encase my thoughts; these people, these ones, who live in these pits of pain. Pain inflicted because nobody cared to stop. Nobody bothered to talk. Everybody simply whispered quietly to themselves that someone else would help. Nobody bothered to move. You have this chance. Will you take it? We can do so much; we have the chance to change this. But will you move when you see a chance? Will you ignore this as soon as you read it? Will you let it change you? Molly’s 5-K Run and Walk to Benefit Wounded Warrior Project

isters Kitty and Laurie Enright opened Molly’s Irish Pub in Warrenton, Virginia in 2001. One of the core values at Molly’s is giving back to those less fortunate. Even during the toughest economic times they believe through hard work and perseverance everyone can give in some way.

On Sunday March 21, 2010 Molly’s Irish Pub will host its fifth Wearing Of the Green 5-K run/walk. 100% of race proceeds will go to the Wounded Warrior Project. More than 30,000 of our troops have been injured in recent conflicts, many of them suffering traumatic brain injuries, amputation, and severe burns. The mission of the Wounded Warrior Project is to honor, empower and assist those men and women of our armed forces who have been severely injured during conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and other locations around the world. Its purpose is to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the special needs of our wounded warriors as well as to help these heroes aid and assist each other. Laurie has served in the Air National Guard for 24 years. She is a Lieutenant Colonel flying C130s at her unit, the 193rd Special Operations Wing. During her recent deployment to Afghanistan she was able to volunteer at the base hospital, “Seeing first hand the physical and emotional trauma of our severely injured military men and women is something I will never forget. These young people are genuine heros - they give so much to our country, and we all need to give back to them”.

This winter is carrying on way too long and snowy for Virginia. I know everyone is ready for spring and some warmer temperatures. We have a lot going on in the business world and maybe that will give us that feeling of something fresh and new until all this snow melts and the crocus pop up. To renew your body and spirit, the White Flower Wellness Center has opened on Waterloo Street and is ready to help you achieve peace within yourself. They offer massages, herbal therapy, reflexology, yoga and wellness groups for women. Accounting Solutions of Warrenton has also opened their new office in the Re/Max building on Holiday Court and will be there for all your tax needs as that ever important date approaches. We had a of business that closed recently. Pomegranates has closed it’s store and is going to an online wholesale presence and will also be doing Trade, Trunk & Home shows. Broadview Auto Service recently lost their lease on Broadview Avenue and has moved to the Opal area of Warrenton. At the new location they will be adding tire sales and the sales and service of trailers. The Fauquier Bank has moved their View Tree branch from Broadview Avenue to their new “green” building on the corner of Lee Highway and Fletcher Drive and The Rappahannock Bank has moved their Piedmont Branch, near the Taco Bell, into the Broadview Avenue building that The Fauquier Bank vacated. And the last relocation that I am aware of is Taylor Boyz which has moved to Rogues Rd, near Crockett Park. They still have the same great parts and service, so stop by and check out their new place. I have been alerted by a reader that there is a sign near the Harris Teeter and Chevy Chase Bank about a Lone Star Steakhouse coming soon. Of course, when I went to confirm this there was too much snow to see it. There is some new construction under way and I am sure that that is where it will be going.
