Cead Míle Fáilte Warrentonians, A hundred thousand welcomes to all of you in this most Irish of months. I don’t want to mislead you that I actually know any Gaelic. I just happen to have an affinity for Irish people (like my wife, Holly and best friend, Patrick) and most things Irish. Clothing, food and drink can be found around Warrenton at many places including McMahons, Mollys and the Scoti. In Warrenton, the spirit of Ireland can be enjoyed year round. This month’s issue really came together to embrace the spirit of our community. I hope you like this issue as much as we do. This month’s Warrenton Lifestyle displays the great range of people, events and places we have here. For starters, we present Warrenton’s first beer makers, Old Bust Head Brewing Company. Knowing owners Ike and Julie Broaddus for several years, I was convinced they would create a first-rate project yet they exceeded all expectations with their facility. They are a great addition to our region! John Toler brings the legendary Pete Shirley to our pages. One of the most beloved Warrentonians of the past century, Shirley was a shining example of a Warrenton gentleman with a servant’s heart.

Local counselor Michelle Kelley offers advice for dealing with anxiety, a condition that affects one-fifth of our adult population. A guy walks into Vint Hill with the dream of opening a pub… three and a half years later with two additional business partners, an excellent brewery business plan and a lot of hard work, Old Bust Head Brewing Company is officially serving Fauquier County. Brew Master Charles Kling along with locals Ike and Julie Broaddus have opened up one of the larger breweries in Virginia. “Somewhere along the way, I went to Julie and told her this was what I wanted to do in the next phase of our lives,” Broaddus explained. “It took her few months to get into the plan and once she agreed we made a go of it.” It took a steady year of working together to refine the original plan and find the perfect space to open the brew house. “We knew we wanted to be in Fauquier County,” Broaddus mentioned. “We looked everywhere, Warrenton, Vint Hill, New Baltimore and eventually outside of Fauquier with no luck.”

Broaddus reached out to Carter Wiley with Vint Hill Economic Authority and asked for his recommendation after their diligent search for a location was coming up short. Interestingly enough, Wiley brought the dream of the brewery back to Vint Hill. A defense contractor and longterm tenant, who rented the space for ten years, was leaving and he suggested taking a look at the space with an open mind. “I brought Julie and Charlie over and we looked at these beers & cheers continued on page 10

buildings,” Broaddus explained. “Together we said this really could work.” An offer was placed and within three months the offer was accepted - that has almost been a year ago. Immediately they started purchasing equipment and worked to get things started. “I never thought I’d be working at a brew company - never,” Broaddus laughed. “We would have never gone into brewing without the right partner, because I’ve only been a craft beer liker for 20 years.” Kling has a very interesting history and his experiences have molded him into a superb brewer. Being raised in the Ozarks he learned early on how to make moonshine and it was that craftsmanship that even today he still can’t shake. He moved on from the Ozarks to go to college but wound up making wines and eventually beers. Broaddus said, “Charlie is one of the best brewers in the world.” He completed a beer certificate program and a few internships. From there he progressed to Abita Brewing Company in Louisiana. Kling eventually worked his way up to one of the three Head Brewers. His interest in craftsmanship and independence would take him to Arkansas and to a smaller place called Diamond Bear Brewing Company. In his four years there he developed Diamond Bears portfolio – his English Pale Ale was the best in the world at the World Cup in 2004 and again in 2006. It’s safe to say he knows his craft very well.

“So

Luckily for Fauquier, Kling and his family relocated to the area a few years ago for his wife’s job. Kling worked initially at the U.S. Patent Office but he wouldn’t be able to suppress his desire to create for long. It was then that Kling met Broaddus at Vint Hill inquiring about a potential pub. Fast forward almost four years and Old Bust Head is now bricks and mortar. Broaddus mentioned that Old Bust Head will start out as a very large micro-brewery. Compared to other infantile breweries they are massive in size, Broaddus is confident in Kling’s ability to make awardwinning beers and believes that they will grow into the space accordingly. “We wanted a business that was Fauquier-based and where we could somehow leverage our love for farmland and preservation into the business,” Broaddus mentioned. “Julie especially was interested in getting to know the history of the area as well.” The business provided them the opportunity to incorporate all of those things into one. The brewery has already connected with local farmers to provide them with spent grain for their livestock. Broaddus expressed hope in building better connections with farmers and would love to work with local sources for barley and hops. “As soon as we can we’d really like to develop an all Fauquier beer,” he said. “It would be really, really neat!”

The name Old Bust Head Brewing Company comes from a few old anecdotes which keeps this a truly Fauquier County inspired business. In researching Old Bust Head Road, the current location of the Broaddus property they found the inital land grant from the original owners of the property that totalled over 5,000 acres. The Norris family (the original owners) had a couple commercial buildings that included a post office, blacksmith shop and wheelwright shop. At the time this area was known as the Town of Norris located on what is now called Old Bust Head Road. “We asked a few old timers and they mentioned that the old wheelwright shop was transformed into a tavern,” Broaddus explained. “One story said that the stuff they were selling there was so rough that in the morning you would wake up with a busted head, another saying people would get drunk and ride their horses home and fall off and bust their head.” The third story that they heard several times which was equally as colorful was that the tavern would hold drunken fights on Saturdays – essentially giving the participants busted heads. “I don’t know which story it is but they are all great,” Broaddus smiled. Eventually, the tavern became known as Bust Head, then the area turned into Bust Head Corner, then Bust Head Road and then finally due to its age it settled as Old Bust Head Road. beers & cheers continued on page 12

The brewery released their first tastings to the public in early February, just in time for the Super Bowl. Available for tasting and purchasing is their flagship brew Bust Head – English Pale Ale as well as their Wild Cat Mountain IPA. Broaddus mentioned that they are looking forward to distributing their bottles to local grocery stores but is really excited to see their taps at restaurants.

Two more releases aren’t far behind including the Chinquapin Chestnut Porter and a Czech Pilsner called Chukker. Their Tap Room is under construction and is scheduled to be completed and open in April just in time for the spring. In the mean time, they’ll be open on the weekends to continue sharing their Fauquier brewed beers.

I have particular interest in helping patients with fibroids, menopausal issues and abnormal pap smears.” And when it comes to pregnant patients, she emphasizes preventative care as well: maintaining a healthy weight, proper nutrition, regular exercise, and thorough prenatal care, to give the mom-to-be the best chance for a trouble-free delivery and healthy baby. Dr. Garreau has a simple philosophy when it comes to caring for her patients. “Patients are generally smart and interested in their care, so they do better when they understand their condition and are given choices about treatments. I explain things in simple language, and I provide lots of information.”

I encourage women to take charge of their own health. To do that, they need the right information. I try to share with patients my understanding and knowledge of what is happening in ways they can understand. In fact, I am notorious for my badly drawn pictures that I use to help them visualize things!” Dr. Majeed has a particular enthusiasm for performing minimally invasive surgery; managing low-and high-risk obstetrics; helping women choose the best birth control choices, and providing gynecological care for young adults. “I love creating relationships with women that I get to see on a regular basis.” A veteran of a busy city hospital, Dr. Majeed says that she appreciates the value of the patient-centered model at Fauquier Health. “I believe the women I will take care of here will recognize the effort that goes into making their care comfortable and safe.”

‘Warrenton’s Grand Old Man’ J. W. ‘Pete’ Shirley was known for his kindness, dedication by John T. Toler

After standing empty for several years, the old house on the corner of Falmouth and Madison streets in Warrenton was recently demolished. In its place and on the two acres that surrounded it, 15 new homes will be built in the “Madison Square” townhouse development.

At their home on Falmouth Street, Pete Shirley and his wife, Janetta A. Brodie Shirley (1860-1929), raised eight daughters, six of whom lived to adulthood: Toy Pauline (Rupp), Blanche Elizabeth (Maxheimer), Emma Ethel (Anderson), Irene (Rector), Lottie Adele, and Ruth I. Shirley.

For many years, the property was owned by the family of James Woodford “Pete” Shirley (1857-1945), a long-time employee of the Town of Warrenton and the Fauquier County Jailor from 1914-1944. During his nearly 60 years in public service, Pete Shirley earned the respect and affection of the people of Fauquier County, and in his later years, was known as “Warrenton’s Grand Old Man.”

In those days, parts of town just outside of Warrenton’s business district were still somewhat rural in character, and for years, the Shirley property on Falmouth Street was known as “The Farm.”

A rough start in life

Sadly, Mrs. Shirley died on April 4, 1859, two weeks after the birth of their fourth child, Emma Susan. With the outbreak of the Civil War, more tragedy would befall the struggling family. Thomas Shirley joined the Confederate Army in 1861, and in his absence, the four Shirley children lived with their grandparents at their home in Haymarket. In a 1937 affidavit written for his daughter, Mrs. Ethel Shirley Anderson, as part of the application for membership in the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Pete described what happened to his family during the war: “As a child four years old, I saw my father ride away to enter the Confederate army, and that was the last time I ever saw him. He was taken prisoner by the enemy and sent to prison in Elmira, New York. After a time, an exchange was arranged, and he, with others, was placed aboard a vessel bound for Charleston, S.C. Before reaching port, my father became ill, died on shipboard, and was buried at sea. “While our father was at war, my brother, two sisters and I were cared

for by our grandparents, James and Elizabeth Bristow Shirley at our home in Haymarket, Prince William County, Va. Upon hearing that Gen. Stonewall Jackson was spending the night in our little village, the enemy set fire to the place (Nov. 5-6, 1862), and our house and everything in it was destroyed. For that reason, it is impossible to produce any Bible or other family records” (See Haymarket Lifestyle, Nov. 2011). Like most of the residents of Haymarket, the Shirleys could not return to the town until the war was over. Their struggle continued as the town was gradually rebuilt.

Pete comes to Warrenton

In 1874, Pete Shirley came to Warrenton, working for master builder John Robert Spilman as a carpenter. His first job in public service began on July 1, 1887, when he was selected to serve a one-year term as Town Sergeant. Popular and respected by the citizens of Warrenton, Pete was soon appointed Superintendent of Warrenton’s water works and the town cemetery, in charge of maintaining the grounds and selling the burial plots. Other responsibilities included operating the hay and cattle scales at the railroad yard (with fees collected by the town), and winding the town clock in the Courthouse steeple. In 1914, Pete was hired by thenSheriff A. S. Hamilton to serve as a

county deputy sheriff and jailor. Like former jailor R. M. Pattie, Pete was required to live in the jailor’s residence in the 1808 building, and Janette cooked the meals for the inmates. Pete was reappointed jailor when W.S. Woolf was elected county sheriff, and after Janette’s death in 1929, daughter Ruth took over the responsibility for preparing meals for the prisoners. During his tenure as county jailor, Pete Shirley was “…recognized throughout the state for his ability in handling criminals and for his faithful discharge of his duties,” according to an account in the March 8, 1945 edition of The Fauquier Democrat. By all accounts, prisoners in Pete Shirley’s custody were well treated, and those who were incarcerated for minor offenses and deemed trustworthy were given opportunities that might be considered today to be “work release.” Although Pete died before he was born, his great-grandson, Charles E. Shepherd III, who grew up in the Mosby house on Main Street, recalls many stories about his beloved ancestor. “Pete was such a square guy with everybody, and treated the prisoners in his custody with fairness and respect,” recalled Mr. Shepherd. “He would take some of the inmates down to ‘The Farm,’ where he gave them little garden plots where they could grow vegetables. After they got out, they could still come back and harvest them. That gave them something to go on. ” Those he considered trustworthy were allowed to leave the jail on the promise to return, and they always did. He would also send prisoners on errands in his car, or have them drive him around town when he had places to go. Sometimes, he let trusted inmates drive for members of his family. “Whenever my grandmother (Mrs. Ford Anderson, nee’ Emma Ethel Shirley) or my mother (Mrs. Charles Shepherd Jr., nee’ Frances LaMarque Anderson) needed to get to Baltimore, Washington, D.C., or Richmond, Pete got somebody out of jail to drive

them,” said Mr. Shepherd. “He would make the arrangements, and tell the inmate to ‘Go up to the house, make sure there was gas in the Packard, and take the ladies Christmas shopping, or to the doctor, wherever.’ If it was for overnight, the driver would sleep in the car.”

A beloved, memorable character During the years he was in charge, the jail was informally known around town as the “Hotel de Shirley,” according to historian Nettie Lee Moffett in The Diary of Courthouse Square.

One of Warrenton’s most famous visitors was briefly Pete’s guest, but not at the “Hotel de Shirley.” Mr. Shepherd recalls that Wallis Warfield Simpson (later the Duchess of Windsor) stayed for a few days at “The Farm” in 1927 to get away from the 20

In her wide-ranging history of the old times in Warrenton, Mrs. Moffett collected several interesting anecdotes about Pete Shirley. “Mr. Shirley had a large, ugly dog of unknown mixtures, more like a boxer, named ‘Rex,’” she recounted in The Diary of Courthouse Square. “He knew everyone in town, and everyone knew him. Once Rex and a small boy were looking at each other. The boy made an ugly face at Rex, and when asked why, he replied, ‘He did it to me first!’” In his later years, Pete had a bob-tailed, yellow-and-white jail cat, which he called “John Stone,” that accompanied him around town. Unfortunately, the cat was killed,

The event was organized by Warrenton dentist Dr. J. O. “Biggy” Hodgkin, and drew a crowd of “… about 75 Warrentonians, either by manner born, or adopted sons,” according to the article. Toastmaster was Rev. Walter H. Robertson, and the first speaker was attorney J. D. Richards, who “…in a most gracious speech, chock full of real oratory and embellished with all kinds of big words, presented gifts to the guest of honor.” Next to speak was Father Bill Winston, who noted that Pete had served as Town Sergeant, Jailor, and Superintendent of the Cemetery, “Three jobs that were not popular ones, but he had so won the admiration of the citizens, that if they had to be arrested, or jailed, or buried, they much preferred these duties be attended to by Pete Shirley.” A fine dinner was served by Ralph McKee, manager of the Warren Green Hotel, “…and music interspersed the talking,” according to the article. “The guests were all in good spirits, and good spirits were in them. Still a dangerous place

The Shirleys had a small garden in the yard in front of the 1808 jail building. Inside, they added homelike touches, but it was still a jail, and at times, a dangerous place.

While making an inspection of the jail on May 17, 1938, Pete fell down the tall steps leading to the second floor of the cellblock, breaking several ribs. A more serious incident followed on Sept. 5, 1938, when an inmate struck him on the head, and took his keys while he lay senseless on the floor. Five prisoners escaped, but four were recaptured by Sept. 20, and the last one by Sept. 21.

Pete Shirley’s retirement was brief. After leaving the jail, he lived with his daughters at “The Farm.” He died there on March 3, 1945 at age 88. His funeral service held at the Warrenton Baptist Church, where he was a longtime member, by Rev. Guy C. Heyl.

Do you suffer from chronic, acute or even mild anxiety? If so, then you might find some comfort in knowing that you have plenty of company. In fact, the Anxiety and Depression Association of America tells us that 40 million Americans age 18 and over suffer from some kind of anxiety issue. That’s about one-fifth of the entire adult population! Unfortunately, only about one-third of sufferers seek help -even though it is a highly treatable condition. In light of those stats, anxiety is the most common issue that brings a person into counseling. Although seeking help can be embarrassing, it is the first step towards getting better and taking back control of your life. Given the vast number of people who suffer from anxiety in our society, you are clearly not alone and there is no shame in seeking professional help. One of the ways we make ourselves anxious is with negative self-talk - a habit of telling ourselves the worst will happen. As a counselor I always ask my clients to think about what they are thinking about – a strange concept at first. Our emotions, in part, come from our thoughts. It behooves all of us to be very mindful of what is going on inside of our heads. If you haven’t tried it, I suggest that you keep a journal or somehow track your thoughts. Are they negative, positive or a mixed bag? Negative, destructive or fearful thoughts can affect you emotionally and physically. Fortunately, it is possible to change your thoughts through persistence and dedication which can be powerful and life changing. And it all starts with being mindful. 26

Now that we have established that anxiety is common and treatable, let’s address some frequently asked questions.

Who can get anxiety?

Anyone at all – even children. With anxiety at epidemic levels among children, it is important that they learn how to push through their fears and worries to build resiliency and independence. Anxiety does not discriminate, but some people are more susceptible and prone to feeling anxious than others. There is also a possible genetic component that comes into play.

WHO’S IN CONTROL? You are! That’s the good news.

Anxiety is not a sign of instability and it does not mean you are crazy. It means you are human and are most likely dealing with an emotional issue! If you feel as though anxiety or panic attacks are interfering with your life and relationships, you should start by consulting with your doctor or a mental health professional. Anxiety rarely gets better without treatment and it may even intensify if you do not seek help. Anxiety is very treatable with early intervention. Most of the time it can be treated successfully through talk therapy. This is a process whereby a counselor guides you towards developing an understanding and awareness of the underlying thoughts that trigger anxiety, and then coaches you in relaxation and developing coping strategies.

Like anything worth doing in life, you will need a strong desire to change, a healthy dose of patience, a good teacher and mindfulness practice.

Gross receipts tax on telephone utilities and cable television was repealed and replaced by the 5% Communications Sales and Use Tax. This is another $530,000 collected by the Town from your phone and cable bills. Motor vehicle decals account for $101,000. The Town requires a motor vehicle decal to be placed on all motor vehicles garaged in the Town as proof of payment of personal property taxes. rate is 80¢ per $100 of net capital. Bank Stock Tax currently accounts for nearly 4.7% of FY2014 General Fund revenues. The Town requires businesses located in Warrenton to pay an annual Business & Professional License Tax (BPOL) based on the business’s prior year gross receipts. The BPOL tax will bring in an estimated $1,375,000 or 14.7% of Town General Fund budget. How this tax affects local businesses and, in turn, the consumer, is the subject of great debate. The Town of Warrenton levies a 4% local tax on meals since 2000. This created a significant source of revenue for the Town, accounting for almost $2,000,000 a year collected from consumers through local restaurants. This 24/7 source of revenue represents 20.9% of the FY 2014 General Fund revenue. The Town claims that this money is largely dependent on the regional travel and tourism economy. Several restaurant owners we spoke with disagree and said that the majority of their revenue and subsequent meals taxes are paid by the people in and around Warrenton. A truer tourism tax, Transient Occupancy Tax, accounts for 2.1% of the General Fund Revenue. This is added to each hotel bill. The Town collects about $200,000 a year from this tax. Cigarette taxes are levied at a rate of 15¢ per pack and bring in $190,000 a year. Zoning and land development application fees garner about $130,000 per year. Parking, traffic, civil and criminal fines will bring in an estimated $190,000 this year, up 37% in the past 3 years. Rounding out the Other Revenue Fund category is approximately $250,000 collected from rental of town property, car rental tax, recycling income, sale of cemetery plots, and interest income. Writer Jay Pinsky asked a Town panel one thing they would like to see happen in the next budget. Town Manager Ken McLawhon wants the remaining bond on the $25 million Warrenton Aquatic and Recreation Facility (WARF), to be paid in full. The WARF bond is paid for with general funds and the day-to-day operating costs are paid by enterprise funds from the Recreation Department. He also said he’d like to see Fauquier County and Warrenton work more closely on projects like Broadview Avenue.

Police Chief Battle was much more specific with his wish list. “Since 9/11 there have been so many advances and I’d like to take advantage of that but the cost is substantial,” he said. “If I could get whatever I wanted I would want us to be able to take advantage of more training opportunities, expand some of our programs and install more MDT’s (Multiple Digital Terminals).”

Director of Human Resources, Stephanie Miller, wants to see Warrenton keep their institutional knowledge, which is a necessity when one considers that Warrenton hasn’t added any staff positions in years. She added that she would like to see Depot Park located between 4th and 5th Streets completed.

Tucker added: “I’ve got about 60 people on staff and they’re all going to read this so I’m going to ask for all new equipment,” Tucker said. “It’s a balancing act for us and we can’t control the weather.”

PREVENTION of ADDICTION by Dr. Robert Iadeluca

A number of years ago an amazing thing happened. Kaiser-Permanente, the nation’s largest health care delivery system, discovered that patients losing weight in their Weight Program were the most likely to drop out of the program. This, for obvious reasons, was unexpected. Why were participants dropping out when they were succeeding? After working together with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in a scientifically controlled research study, the result was also amazing. It turned out that the participants’ drop out from the program was the subconscious attempt to gain relief from well-concealed traumas experienced in their early childhood.

“Constant substance abuse may lead to addiction which lasts for a life time. Primary prevention is the only realistic solution, specifically an emphasis on positive parenting.”

On a conscious level of thinking, they believed that they wanted to lose weight. On a hidden subconscious level they realized the danger of losing weight by making themselves more attractive to others. To a person who had been sexually abused at an early age, even infancy, the possibility of sexual activity was frightening. Prior to age three or four (a critical period) the hippocampus, the brain structure which is responsible for the working memory, may not yet be fully developed. Infants of that age who, sadly to say, are not uncommonly sexually abused, will not on a conscious level remember such events. During the intake of a patient

who comes to me for the first time, I regularly ask if he or she has ever been sexually abused. A common answer is: “I don’t think so and yet I have that feeling.” Not jumping to conclusions, I nevertheless take such an answer seriously. This “feeling” may be the subconscious message given by the amygdala, the brain’s fear structure which handles the well known “fight or flight” reaction. It is communicating that such a traumatic event had taken place. As the years progress the child (can be either boy or girl) moves through school years finally arriving at teen age, a second critical period, when peer influence takes over. Fellow students suggest trying one or another drug and this earlier abused adolescent, still hurting emotionally but not knowing why, self medicates. What he does not realize, nor does society in general, is that he/she is not trying to heal a current toxic stress but one that took place perhaps over a decade before. From society’s point of view, the teenager is “abusing” a drug. From the adolescent’s subconscious point of view he is trying to recover from a former abuse done to him. The legal system moves in, following the national, state, and local laws, arresting this young person not so much for what he has done but rather his reaction to what had been done to him or her during the early years of childhood. prevention continued on page 44

Abuse takes place in many forms. I hesitate to put in print what some of my adult patients tell me was done to them in their early years. Time does not heal. And now this woman (usually women but commonly men) tells me of her inability to sleep or her depressed feelings for which she goes to a physician and is prescribed an anxiolytic or an anti-depressant. Finding often that the medication does not “solve” the problem, she often may take more than prescribed, winds up in the emergency department complaining of the anxiety or depression and is given another prescription for medication. Almost never does a physician ask a patient about his childhood. That is not part of medical school training. A physician tends to think of what is happening now. Very young children are deeply hurt when they are physically, sexually or emotionally abused or when they see or hear violence in their homes. Exposure to violence, especially when it is intense and ongoing, literally affects the structure of their brains. Emotional abuse might include having been sworn at, insulted or put down. Physical abuse might include being often pushed, grabbed, slapped or being hit so hard that there were marks. Sexual abuse is when a person at least five years older than the child touches him or her in a sexual way or attempts or actually completes a sexual activity. Another form of abuse is neglect. It can be emotional neglect where the child is not being made to feel special and loved or physical neglect where the child does not have enough to eat, wears dirty clothes, or the parents’ drinking interferes with necessary care such as taking him to a doctor. Starting with birth, it is imperative that both parents build a secure attachment bond with the baby. As the infant grows the parents are contributing toward the healthy development of its brain by expressing

love and affection, helping it to feel safe, avoiding criticism and praising it for one thing or another. Parents are their children’s first teachers. A parent is the strongest influence that a child can have. By listening to them, being consistent, providing order, spending time with them and above all, helping them to feel safe, they are being prepared for their future. If, however, there is anything more important than paying attention to the behaviors of the child, it is an emphasis on the parent’s own behavior – being, in effect, a good role model. As parents, we may act in the same hurtful way with our children that our parents did with us. To counteract that we need to look inward and as best we can recall the hurts in our own childhoods. Did those hurts affect the way we now see ourselves? Are the ambivalent attitudes we have toward our children sometimes reflecting the attitudes we have toward ourselves?

Early childhood is a critical period, especially the first four years. At this time brain circuits and hormone systems are being formed and activated. Stress, however, in itself is not necessarily bad. The brain grows by interacting with the environment and in this way we develop. This is called positive stress and promotes resilience. Children can learn to control this level of stress. Tolerable stress is more intense. Events such as the death of a family member or an accident, while unpleasant, can be endured. Toxic stress is another story. It can lead to permanent changes in the brain of the child. An example is the child’s watching the mother being treated violently. Living in a household where someone is a problem drinker or who is using street drugs may impair the child’s brain circuit formation and result in a smaller brain size. As indicated earlier, these physical changes are permanent. The child moving through school years is

unaware that most of his behavior may be a reaction to his inner hurt. Nor may his teacher be aware. Nor the law enforcement officer who arrests him for substance abuse. Constant substance abuse may lead to addiction which lasts for a life time. Primary prevention is the only realistic solution, specifically an emphasis on positive parenting. An effective prevention program includes family education and support – helping children in the very early years to feel good about themselves. A secure bond provides the infant with a strong foundation for life, an eagerness to learn, a healthy self-awareness and consideration for others. When peer influence enters he or she has the strength to resist. Rather than focusing on the treatment of addiction, we must deal with underlying causes. The primary basic cause of addiction lies in the way we treat each other.

Vincenzo Giambanco took over the original shop from Joe and Jack Russo after being their trusted employee for almost a decade. Giambanco worked to keep the quality of the food and service consistent but wanted to add a touch of his Sicilian heritage to the menu. Families and friends can be seen gathered at tables and picking up orders while sharing conversations in this comfortable and familiar restaurant.

“We always order on Fridays for our weekly family night,” one guest commented. “We’ve been customers for years because our kids love the plain cheese pizza and Mozzarella sticks.” Order a few small dishes to start off your meal like the Fried Ravioli and Mozzarella sticks. Both are fried to a delicate golden brown and are ideal to share. The Fresh Calamari with marinara sauce is a classic Italian dish that is full of zest and pairs well with a salad. Check out the Tossed Salad made with fresh lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese and your choice of dressing. The Chef Salad featuring ham, turkey breast and cheese as well as the Grilled Chicken Salad with lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese and grilled chicken come in two sizes: the small would complement a sub sandwich perfectly and the large is hearty enough to be a meal. This restaurant offers an expansive sub sandwich menu that boasts loaded hot and cold options. Their subs come in both six inches and twelve inches and are served on an Italian sub topped with lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, onion and a special house Italian dressing. Guests prefer the Hot Ham &

Cheese and the Steak & Cheese. The New Yorker is stacked with corned beef, Pastrami and cheese and is best when enjoyed cold. There are nine specialty subs on the menu each catering to specific cravings. Try the Country Sub that is piled high with ham, turkey, salami, pepperoni and cheese or Combo Sub #2 with pastrami, genoa, salami and cheese. “Working in town I have the convenience of ordering their Steak and Cheese for lunch,” another guest mentioned. “It always hits the spot.” Known specifically for their round New York style thin crust pizzas, Joe and Vinnie’s creates their pies by hand-tossing homemade dough and topping it with a special pizza sauce and personalized toppings. FAUQUIER COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY ANNOUNCES

Second Annual Teen Writing Challenge By Lisa Pavlock, Public Information Coordinator, Fauquier County Public Library

Fauquier County students are invited to submit their original short stories or poems in the second annual Teen Writing Challenge, hosted by the Fauquier County Public Library. Building on the success of last year’s event, in which over 150 entries were submitted by students throughout the county, the library will again host the Challenge that coincides with National Poetry month. The Challenge is designed to inspire young writers to share their work with others and encourages them to be creative and express themselves through their writing. “We were thrilled with last year’s response. It was such a celebration of reading and writing. The library is pleased to give young people a chance to have their work recognized,” said Maria Del Rosso, Fauquier County Public Library Director. Entries will be accepted March 1 – April 9, 2014. Entries can be submitted at any Fauquier County Public Library location or online at library.fauquiercounty.gov. Entries will be judged by a three-judge panel based on originality, creativity and artistic quality in two categories: Grades 6 – 8 and Grades 9 – 12. Winners will be announced at a Teen Writing Challenge reception Wednesday, April 30 at 7 p.m.

In addition to the Teen Writing Challenge, the Fauquier County Public Library offers a wide range of programs and services designed specifically for teens, including a Teen Advisory Group, and a Teen Writing Group, which meets monthly. It is a way for teens to get feedback on their writing, share ideas and meet other teens. The library has an array of resources for teens including online homework help and test prep, teen-focused magazines, a teen volunteer program, and a teen summer reading program to name only a few.
