Most people in Warrenton know Andy Budd as the owner of Country Chevrolet and many are aware of his other successful business ventures. for his unselfish calls to action to help his fellow man in time of need (9/11, Katrina, etc). Just when you thought you’ve seen or heard it all from Andy Budd we find he just finished recording music for a soonto-be-published CD. I recommend you listen to some of the songs when you have a chance. They’re free for now on the Internet until the CD becomes available in the stores (or free with your next car purchase?). Andy Budd is one heck of an Americana wordsmith. His philosophies regarding life are woven through each of his songs while he honors his mother, father, soldiers and all the mentors in his life. Andy Budd’s music will make you laugh, reminisce, or feel proud. http://www.indie-music.com/bands/ bands/346/ —TT

May is For Mothers Put some thought into your gifts... by Tony Tedeschi For our family, May is one of the two busiest months of the year. The college semester and lacrosse seasons draw to a close in our household while we’re setting our sites on summer vacations. The Virginia Gold Cup on the first Saturday, the Old Town Warrenton Spring Festival on the third Saturday of May, and the Strawberry Festival on the last weekend. All of which draw tens of thousands of people to our region, are standard fare for us. But the most important day in May is Mother’s Day. Do you know yet how you are going to celebrate Mother’s Day? How many women in your life must be remembered – your mom, your wife, you mother-inlaw and maybe a grandmother or aunt who helped raise you? I hope that you are planning to do something special for all the mothers in your life. A bouquet of flowers or some other last minute gift would be nice and probably get you off the hook but what would that mother really want to do for that special day? Would she want to spend her day filled with family and special friends or have a day of being responsibility free? If you were in her shoes, what would you hope that someone would honor you with for Mother’s Day? Put some careful thought into your gift idea. What else would your mother enjoy? What has she wanted to do for a long time? What has she not gotten to experience in her lifetime? How can you really show her she is appreciated? A gift that is accompanied with a note written from the heart will put a smile on a mother’s face! Go ahead, be a little sappy. Moms don’t usually ask for much and the simplest gestures are sometimes the best: a quiet, long conversation over lunch, a special bouquet of flowers, a greeting card with a personal note or a photo album of the family. Please don’t send her one of those “I May 2006
was too lazy to get off my butt” e-cards on the Internet. There are plenty of small gift shops in town to peruse and you are sure to find her something special that she’ll appreciate. A unique piece of jewelry will keep her remembering this Mother’s Day forever. Treat her for dinner or brunch at her favorite restaurant with the family, children and grandchildren. Should it be a store-bought gift or something more personal? If it is something off the shelf, how can it be made more personalized? If it is the gift of time, who does she want to spend it with or what does she want to do with it? By the way moms, it is ok to drop hints about how you would like to spend your special day and with hope,
your spouse, partner, or other loved one will graciously honor your small request. Even though mothers should be honored every day, Mother’s Day on the calendar only comes once a year. Make it special one. And just remember to tell your mother that you love her.

Spring is finally here! Some snow lovers may mourn the passing of winter, but for the rest of us, it means spending more time outside enjoying the warmer weather and longer days. And while you might not have Tiger’s swing, Andre’s serve or the strokes of Michael Phelps, don’t let that stop you from taking advantage of Warrenton’s private clubs that cater to these outdoor sports. “One of the greatest things about Fauquier Fauquier Springs Country Club (FSCC) sits on 200 Springs - especially now that it’s such a nicely acres on Warrenton’s beau- conditioned golf course - is that it’s not in a tiful Springs Road. Today, it is a thriving club that boasts 400 golf members, in addition to tennis and swim facilities. General Manager Stan Orr has been at the club for more than five years, and says in addition to the outstanding sports activities, the club’s membership really makes it special, “At Fauquier Springs, there is no pretension. We’re a great country, country club. Whether you’re the judge or the jury, it doesn’t make any difference. It’s a real tribute to the club and to the county.” The 6,107 yard golf course is an

Springs - especially now that it’s such a nicely conditioned golf course - is that it’s not in a neighborhood. Playing in the country where it’s so beautiful, when your golf is bad, your day is still good because you’re in a great spot.” In addition to golf, FSCC also offers two tennis courts and a 40-meter Junior Olympic pool. The tennis program is led by Laura Couk, a member of the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR). In addition to inter-club leagues and round-robins, private and group lessons are available. Plans are also in the works to start a USTA team in the fall. The pool at Fauquier Springs opens annually on Memorial Day Weekend and remains open through Labor Day.
Not only do they offer regular family activities and get togethers at the pool, but FSCC is also home to a swim team competing in the Tri-County Swim League. Swimming lessons are also available with the lifeguards on staff. The star attraction, though, remains the golf program – whether it’s competing with the Senior Men, the Ladies League, the Junior Program, or one of the many inter-club tournaments. Echoing Dr. Flikeid’s thoughts, Mr. Orr said, “I don’t care what score you shoot. Your experience will be great because it’s so beautiful.”
On the north side of Warrenton on Airlie Road, the tennis program at Chestnut Forks Athletic Club is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Owner Chip Maloney is proud of its success, and makes a special note of the talent his staff brings to the program. “We’re really able to offer a great tennis program here, and our staff is a big part of that success.” Head Tennis Professional Francis Alvir, Skip the cart and enjoy the walk at The Fauquier Springs USPTA, PTR, trains Club for the added health benefits and the beautiful view. the women’s teams
and runs the club’s pro shop. Other members of the staff are Paola Ricetti, PTR, Mark Berry, PTR, Derek Maloney and Jordan Walker . Chestnut Forks began with four indoor tennis courts, but they didn’t stop there. Over the years Maloney has worked to consistently update their facilities. With four additional outdoor courts, two of which are Har-Tru, he continues to look toward the future. “I’m hoping to add a retractable bubble for two of the outdoor courts to add to the number of courts we can offer our members year-round .” The Club runs tennis leagues for men, women and juniors. These USTA rated leagues range from a 2.5 level of ability, up to and including a 4.5 level of ability. But it’s not all league competition. The groups train year-round, with competition heating up in May and June. Social tennis groups and evening leagues are also available to suit the schedules of the membership. Youth programs are also available. A member of one of the USTA

Relay for Life Gives Hope for Cancer Fundraising in Fauquier Approaches $1MM by Kim Long Bags of candles, inscribed with names, softly illuminate the track outline. Music and quiet chatter fill the evening air. There is a sense of reverence, honor and memory etched on everyone’s face. This Luminaria ceremony, held during the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life honors families, friends and loved ones touched by cancer, and pays tribute to those that have battled the disease. This year, the Relay event lasts from 2pm on Saturday, June 3rd until Sunday, June 4th at 7am. As one member from each team continues to walk around the Fauquier High School track, speakers invite participants and the public to gather in the stands to honor and remember all who have dealt with cancer. Bundles of purple and white balloons are released in memory of sisters, brothers, moms,

dads, spouses and loved ones while everyone watches as they drift into the nighttime sky. Tears are cried in pain and in frustration of a disease that affects so many, young and old, and tears are cried in relief and in joy of lives spared. As the ceremonial music ends, everyone reflects together on how cancer affects the community and how each one of us can help eliminate it. Excitement builds as teams head back to their campsites to get ready for the numerous competitions throughout the night. Laughter, intermingled with moments of tears and sadness, spread as families and friends, new and old, gather together and enjoy each others company throughout the night. Relay allows the participants to heal thru sharing stories of the battle, the emotions, the loss and the survival. Strangers relate with the common bond of wanting to eliminate

the emotional and physical suffering of Cancer. It is a very emotional event, but it marks another year that the American Cancer Society increases the survival rate of cancer patients. Everyone has been touched by cancer in some form, and people at Relay form a very special and emotional bond. Remembrance of lives and friendships with those lost, support of those struggling, and celebration of those that beat cancer bring more and more people to the event each year. Money raised by each team over the previous year goes toward the fight against cancer. Each successful Relay enables the American Cancer Society’s continued research and education. This year, Fauquier Relay set a goal of raising $185,000. Attainment of this goal means that throughout its history, Fauquier’s Relay for Life will have raised an outstanding $1 Million for the American Cancer Society. This huge collaboration between local residents, organizations, businesses and teams welcomes any new participation. With increased involvement, Warrenton will be better poised to raise money which helps fight the disease that claims so many lives. Cancer never sleeps and Relay acknowledges the challenges and Warrenton Lifestyle
struggles cancer patients and their families endure. Please join Fauquier’s Relay for Life Celebration this June, either by forming a team or by participating in the Luminaria ceremony, and together the community can face the challenges of Cancer. Kim Long lost her sister to leukemia within 6 months of the diagnosis. To help other families avoid the emotional and physical suffering of Cancer, she is working with Relay for Life to raise cancer awareness and funding.

A Community Tradition Lives On Old Town Warrenton Spring Festival Spring is in full bloom and that means once again Main Street in Old Town Warrenton will play host to the annual Spring Festival. On Saturday, May 20th, merchants and families from up and down the east coast will be making their way to Warrenton for a day of fun in the sun, browsing the wares of over 250 vendors. Entertainment will be performed on the courthouse steps all day long and food will range from kettle corn and funnel cakes to barbeque and ethnic meals. The street will be closed to traffic and setup with booths and tents that stretch from the courthouse steps down to Calhoun Street. For the past several years, the Warrenton Spring Festival has been named one of the top 20 events in May by the Southeast Tourism Society. The Old Town Warrenton Spring Festival can trace its origin to a couple of Main Street merchants that felt strongly about preserving the culture they grew up with in the face of a changing community. In 1979, Duane Thompson and Fred Austin decided to create the event to bring merchants together and bring people from outside of the community to
Warrenton to show off the value of old town. “We were concerned for the character and appeal of Old Town to the community at large, Fauquier and surrounding counties,” stated Fred Austin. “All that travelers really knew was the bypass.” Back in the 70’s, Christmas was the only time of the year where the town came out in force on Main Street. Thompson and Austin wanted to capture this spirit once again during the year when the climate was better. They had heard

of the success of a festival in Orange and thought one in Warrenton would be a terrific idea. Using organizing techniques learned as Jaycees, Thompson quickly came up with a plan to get the ball rolling for the spring event. They chose to have the festival on the third Saturday of May because it was the only weekend of the month that there was nothing going on with Gold Cup running on the first Saturday, Mother’s Day occurring on the second weekend, and Memorial Day weekend celebrated during the fourth weekend. The first Spring Festival was finally set to take place on May 19, 1979, in Old Town on Main Street. When the day finally arrived, everyone was a little nervous.

No one knew what to expect and how many volunteers would show up to help. With everything having gone smoothly up until the day, all Austin and Thompson could do was wait and see. The festival was much smaller than it is today with no generators for vendors, no tents and very few volunteers. But those that did show up worked together in great community spirit. The day started off at 11 am with 75 merchants set up ready to sell their goods. Entertainment kicked off with the bluegrass bands Beach & Wilson Company and Fresh Cut Grass playing music in front of the post office. Throughout the day there were pony rides, puppet shows, and music that could be See Festival on Page 16 May 2006

heard all though the Town. “There was even one local guy that was selling oil,” said Duane Thompson. When all was said and done, Duane Thompson and Fred Austin had created something for the Town of Warrenton that would become a tradition for the next 27 years. “It did what we wanted it to do,” said Thompson proudly. “It brought people to Warrenton.” The festival grew annually. The newly formed Spring Festival Committee began receiving positive comments from all over. The great business community effort at the Festival and the sense of goodwill that it instilled led to the creation of the Old Town Warrenton Business & Professional Association. By the end of the first year, the association had over 100 members working together to keep Main Street vibrant and successful. Both Thompson and Austin give much credit to the organizational skills they learned and the camaraderie they received while being members of the Fauquier Jaycees.
Balloons and face painting are favorites for kids, along with great food and snacks. They also appreciated the Town of Warrenton Public Works Department and Police Department’s cooperation in facilitating setup, cleanup and safety. The two men helped guide the Spring Festival for the next 22 years when, after years of debate, it was turned over to the Fauquier County Chamber of Commerce to operate as the largest fund-raiser for their organization. These days the Spring Festival is larger than ever with this year’s event stretching from the Courthouse to Calhoun Street. Along with a record number of merchants and vendors, the 2006 Spring Festival is expected to draw over 25,000 people. The day is usually a spectacular one having only been rained on twice in its history. The Chamber needs volunteers to help set up, monitor and disperse the Festival on the day of the event. If you’d like to volunteer and have a fun day working with great people, sign up by emailing directly to Mike Cauldwell at: michael. cauldwell@mtctechnologies.com . Volunteers are especially needed early in the morning beginning at 5:30 am (there is free coffee) and in the afternoon beginning at 3:00 pm.
