Fauquier County Happenings

Fauquier County will celebrate the 250th anniversary of its formation on Friday, May 1, 2009 with events from 9:00am to 9:00pm in Old Town Warrenton. County government and schools will be closed in honor of this important occasion, and there will be free parking available at Fauquier High School with a shuttle to and from the events. Entertainment will include living historians, demonstrations, performances, contests, activities, lectures, Kid’s Corner, live music, and more. The celebration is a result of two years of planning by a committee appointed by the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors. Beginning with a parade and presentations by selected speakers, and culminating with the sealing of a time capsule on the lawn of the old Fauquier County Clerk’s Office, the day promises to recognize the rich history and to promote the bright future of Fauquier County. The historical parade will begin at 10:00am at the east end of Main Street in Warrenton, and will proceed west toward the old Fauquier County Courthouse. Willard Scott will serve as Master of Ceremonies and will announce participants as they briefly stop for review in front of the Old Courthouse. Congressman Frank Wolf will serve as Grand Marshall. Participants in the parade will include elected Fauquier County constitutional officers, elected officials from the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors and the County’s three incorporated towns (Warrenton, Remington and The Plains), local fire and rescue units, all three local high school marching bands, and elementary and middle schools. Service clubs, civic organizations, churches and merchants are also invited to participate. Thanks to the parade committee, headed by Paula Johnson and Karen White, many people on foot, on horseback, or in horse-drawn wagons, buggies, antique cars, trucks, farm tractors, or modern-day vehicles will be on hand to honor the rich history of Fauquier County. Men and women dressed in period clothing as farmers, laborers, merchants, free men, enslaved men, apprentices and indentured servants will come to life to demonstrate the many phases the county has passed through on its 250-year journey. Men and women in uniform will bring to life the military

conflicts that have affected the county and the nation since 1759. In the French and Indian War, the American War for Independence, the War Between the States, the Spanish American War, World Wars I and II, Korea, and Vietnam, Fauquier County men and women were active participants in the writing of our country’s history. Now, as we close out the first decade of the 21st century, our brave Fauquier County service men and women continue to help make the world a better place in which to live. We honor their service and await their safe return. When the parade ends, many participants will park their exhibits along Main Street until 4:00pm to enable a closer view. Everyone is encouraged to visit the exhibits. At 1:30pm, there will be a commemorative ceremony on the steps of the Old Courthouse. At 2:00pm, various dignitaries will deliver brief speeches leading up to the official event of the day. At 3:00pm on the grounds of the old Clerk’s office, now the Juvenile & Domestic Court building on Main Street, the 250th anniversary committee, along with

the Chairman of the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors, will unveil a commemorative monument carved by Fauquier County native G. Edward Ashby, Jr. out of local stone donated by Luckstone Corporation in Bealeton. They will oversee the sealing of a copper time capsule donated by local native Michael Jenkins. The time capsule, which will remain sealed for the next 50 years until the year 2059 when the county celebrates its 300th anniversary, will contain the newly published Fauquier County history book honoring the 250th celebration, a copy of the Fauquier Times-Democrat newspaper highlighting the events, and notes or photographs provided by local schools, religious and civic organizations, and businesses. The entertainment will continue throughout the day. The Cedar Run Garden Club will host a “History is our Heritage” flower show from 2:00 to 4:00pm. Three historic homes on Culpeper Street will be open free of charge to the public. A copy of a 1798 deed for the sale of real property in Fauquier County, owned and sold by George and Martha Washington, will be on display in the Old Courthouse. It is

one of very few documents in existence that has both George and Martha’s signatures together. Also on display will be a copy of an affidavit signed by Fauquier native John Marshall, a famous Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Both of these rare original documents are safeguarded inside the Fauquier County Circuit Court Clerk’s office. To close out the celebration, there will be a 250th First Friday Wine Walk on Main Street from 6:00-9:00pm. Fauquier wineries will offer wine tastings and sales, agricultural businesses will offer locally made foods and fresh grown produce, stores and restaurants will be open, and guests will enjoy live music and much more. The Virginia Gold Cup, taking place on Saturday, May 2, 2009, has graciously agreed to continue the 250th anniversary celebration with a Fauquier County history video displaying on their jumbo screen. Demand at Free Clinic Doubles V o l u n t eer s re s p onding t o t h e in c rea s e

It is a fact that while the national, state and local economies have slowed down, one facility in Fauquier County finds itself busier than ever before. It’s the Fauquier Free Clinic, located at 210 West Shirley Avenue in Warrenton. The clinic provides health care to uninsured residents of Fauquier and Rappahannock counties. Rob Marino, executive director of the clinic, said that since it moved from its old location in

the Health Department Building almost three years ago, the clinic has seen a massive increase in the number of patients it services. “The bottom line is that we moved here in August 2006, and we’ve more than doubled the number of patients we are seeing, and that’s a big shock,” Marino stated. “And the main thing is that the people coming in the doors now are different,” he continued. “The economy 10

has hammered people. People who have never been in a free clinic in their lives are coming in here now. They often apologize for being here. A lot of them say, ‘I’ve never been in a clinic like this before,’ but they need help, and they don’t come until they’re sick.” Make them feel better Marino said that part of the process involved in providing the care to the patients is screening them to make certain that they qualify. “Our financial screeners spend a lot of time trying to make new people feel better about being here,” he explained. “Many have lost their jobs and their health insurance, and they have never been into a free clinic before. For all I know, they may never be back.” The clinic is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., by appointment, and Thursday evening by walk-in. There also is a dental clinic Thursday evenings in the Health Department Building. “We have a couple of dentists volunteer to work in the clinic, and we see probably 12 patients each night,” Marino stated. “We could run that dental clinic every day, and it probably would be full.” There also is a free clinic on the first and third Wednesday night every month in Little Washington in Rappahannock County. “And we run a couple of other specialty health clinics,” Marino said. “Every Tuesday evening we have a diabetes clinic, which is very important. these things from happening.” The increase in demand has put strains on the organization. “Every single piece of the organization is under pressure,” Marino said. “We’ve got to raise money faster, got to answer the phone faster, see the patients faster ... everything’s faster.” Statistics bear out what Marino is saying. The number of unduplicated patients seen by the clinic was fairly steady at a bit more than 700 a year from 1995 through 2005, with one

Volunteers are needed in administration, clerical work, nursing, medical assistance, triage, pharmacy services, and dental services. Specific health care experience is not required. year – 2002 – that peaked at 900. Last year, however, the number approached 1200. The number of patient care visits was pretty steady at 1500-2000 each year from 1995 through 2005. recently, however, the number of visits shot up to 3000 in 2007 and more than 3500 in 2008. It is on pace to break that number this year, Marino said. “We moved here and opened up because we were turning people away at the old place,” he stated. “They would all come, forty-plus patients, all lined up at the door, and I would send people away who were sick that very minute. That’s when the push came to open this building.”

Helping hands The work load has increased exponentially with the increase in the patient load. “Every time a patient comes in, it generates work for us.,” Marino said. “Doctors prescribe lab tests, medicines, and we’ve got to follow up on it.” Fortunately for the clinic, the community has responded to the increase. “The other thing that has changed is that I’ve had no problem finding volunteers. Physicians, nurses, dentists ... regular citizens have really shown up. We have to get them organized to make sure that they are trained, but they are coming in person to help, which is fine with me.” The Fauquier Hospital has had a strong hand in the success of the clinic. “We couldn’t do what we do without the hospital,” Marino stated. “The doctors work for free, but if there were no lab tests or medicines, it would just be, ‘I think this is what is wrong with you.’ The hospital is a big, big help.” The hospital owns the building and the land where the clinic is located. It leases the property to the clinic on very favorable terms. “We signed a 10-year lease at a dollar a year,” Marino said. Raising money While the clinic receives money from Fauquier and Rappahannock county governments and from the Town of Warrenton, a large piece of the funds comes from fund raising activities. One, a golf tournament, takes place soon. “Our annual golf tournament is on st May 1 ,” Marino explained. “Then we st have a 10k run and a 5 k run on June 21 , and we have bike rides in September. We also try to apply for grants, and we ask for direct donations, and we get them. There are 50 free clinics in Virginia, and we have an association in Richmond. necessarily must be concerned when times get hard economically. Marino said that the clinic keeps a wary eye on the bills. “We have grown so much, and our expenses have grown so much that it is a concern,” he said. “We’re not rolling in dough, but we probably have enough money in the bank to cover six months worth of expenses. So far, I’ve never felt pinched, but if we had more money, we could do a lot more. Right now, we’re not open on Monday or Friday, and if we had more money, we could be open on those days.” Information provided by the clinic bears out the fact that the organization makes the most of the money it receives. “Our research shows that we provide $4.75 in health care services for every donated dollar,” Marino said. “We figured out the other day – using figures that were as conservative as possible – that we did $1.6 million in health care services in 2008. Personally I think that the number is much higher, but we wanted to be as conservative as we could be in the estimate. This year we’re doing more, and we could do more still. We’re not adding more days, but we’re adding more doctors, and we’ve hired a nurse who comes in every day to provide continuity.”

I get a kick out of watching peoples’ fear of not getting quality health care disappear.” – Tom Fugee, volunteer since 2005 What else “What am I thinking about day to day?” Marino asked. “That’s easy. I’m thinking that I have to figure out how to get more dental care delivered. If you don’t get regular dental care, you can develop all kinds of problems, but people don’t treat it the same way they do health care. I don’t know why.” The Fauquier Free Clinic is located at 210 West Shirley Avenue in Warrenton. The phone number is (540) 347-0394. The clinic is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. by appointment and has a Thursday evening walk-in clinic. There is a dental clinic on Thursday evening starting at 5 p.m. at the Health Department Building in Warrenton. In addition, there is a clinic in Little Washington on the first and third Wednesday evening each month at the Little Washington Health Department. In more technical terms, this is how it works. One side of the material (silicon) is electronically positive, the other is negative. Sunlight shines on the positive side of the material, activating negative electrons to produce energy. A conversion unit (called an inverter) will produce alternating current (AC), which is compatible with any conventional appliance, power units, etc., and operates in parallel with the utility grid. Could Be Fifth Virginia Horse in 135 Years to Win the Derby Virginia thoroughbred breeders and Virginia horse aficionados are anxiously awaiting a Virginia winner at this year’s Kentucky Derby. Edward P. Evans’ Virginia-bred Quality Road will be a formidable contender on May 2 when the field of horses lines up at the start gate for the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby. The three-year old, big, dark bay colt won his first race at Aqueduct in November, 2008; and he has recently been announced the favorite, by several odds makers, after an impressive win in the $750,000 Florida Derby on March 28.

If he wins the Kentucky Derby, Quality Road will be the fifth Virginia-bred horse to do so, and the first since 1993. He is also the third horse to hail from Fauquier County, Virginia. “The horse truly appears to have wings on his hooves,” states VTA Executive Director Glenn Petty. But Quality Road’s life has not always been so easy. Having flipped upside down prior to his birth, vets had to work to flip him around. Everyone worried as to whether or not he’d make it. Once born, he was noted to have a lean body and extremely long legs. “Long legs are a good thing to a point,” explains Petty, “however, there is a point where the horse’s legs can just be too long to produce the speed needed. If they’re too ‘leggy’, they have a tendency to get tangled up and not produce the lightening speed needed to win.” In spite of carrying on Virginia’s historic racing traditions, Quality Road has a Facebook page and is also on Twitter. He was the first Derby entry to obtain a Facebook page. “The entire Virginia equine industry is excited about this horse,” Petty exclaims. “We know that Quality Road has a very good shot at being a Virginia-bred Kentucky Derby winner.” The majority of Derby winners have historically hailed from Kentucky, with a few from Florida, Pennsylvania, New York, and Virginia. On May 2, yet another Virginia-bred horse may be added to the prestigious list of Derby winners as Quality Road, the long legged colt from Virginia runs for the roses. 22

When I was nine years old tragedy entered my life. My mother, the light of my life, died from an illness from which she would have probably recovered in today’s medical world.. I had no brothers or sisters and my father, a World War I veteran, supported himself and me on a total disability pension. The chores of the world of 1930 were radically different from those of today’s electronic age. I found myself darning socks and learning how to cook over a kitchen range fueled by kerosene. These and other household responsibilities were taken care of before and after school. Because my father’s right side was partially paralyzed, he was not capable of driving a car, this necessitating a mile walk to school. Let me not at this point cry crocodile tears. Other children living in a rural area and in that era also walked to school. Not every child’s father owned a Model T Ford, the common auto of that period. This, however, is my story – the story of a boy still in elementary school suddenly forced to mature far beyond his years. Tragedy is defined by our reaction to it. Was I devastated? Of course. My mother was buried on her birthday in the midst of a blinding February snow storm. Ordinarily an extremely healthy boy, I suffered an unbearable headache as I listened to the clergyman intone words I didn’t want

to hear. For weeks after her death I experienced frightful nightmares. But the inexorable demands of life continued. Food had to be purchased. Meals had to be made. Schools did not close. And in some almost indescribable way, I felt myself becoming even stronger than I had been before. How could this be? How could such an energy draining event cause a person to acquire greater strength? Many years later as a career Scout Executive with the Boy Scouts of America my responsibility was to recruit and train Scoutmasters. Scouting, to the boy, is a game. To the adult Scouter it is a game with a purpose. The mission of the BSA is character building, citizenship training, and physical fitness. No boy joins a Scout troop to have his character built but he does join to be with his buddies and have fun. So the activities serve a purpose. One exercise is to have a team at each end of a clothesline pull until the rope breaks. The two frayed ends are now tied together with a square knot. The teams again pull until the rope breaks. The rope never breaks where the knot is. What was the weakest part of the rope has now become the strongest. Within weakness lies strength. comes through when needed? In my case it was my mother’s legacy – her spiritual guidance and her assistance in building up my selfesteem. Even at that tender age I had a pretty good idea of who and what I was. These were the inner components helping to keep me strong. My outer components were a loving extended family and a bevy of teachers who surrounded me with deep caring. I liken it to the wagon trains who, as they moved westward, formed a circle when Indians attacked and surrounded the weakest members of the group. This inner resiliency plus the outer support was the square knot which strengthened the rope. My teachers expected top-notch marks from me and they got it. My aunts and uncles expected me to continue developing and I strove to meet their 26

expectations. In a sense, I had no choice. I was surrounded by positive role models. Sociological research has shown that some of the most resilient

children were children growing up during the Great Depression of 19291939 and who came to maturity at the outset of World War II. Research results showed them to be healthy, law abiding, well-adapted and bright. Amazingly, even poverty was found to have a slight positive effect. I was one of those children. Again, within the weakness lay strength. Resiliency is the ability to spring back from and successfully adapt to adversity. Our level of resiliency is evident in how we respond to the stressor, not the stressor itself. How we handle the storm can build our resiliency. My mother lives within me. She never left me. If I am anything or have accomplished anything today, it is due to her. I have learned from my life’s experiences that the training she gave me while she was with me overcompensated by far the “tragedy” of her death.

A Lesson in History

John Marshall is Entwined in Fauquier’s History By Jennifer Heyns He is unavoidable, his name is everywhere. No matter where in the county you may roam, you are bound to come across him either by name or by likeness. But just who was this John Marshall and why does our county seem to be so infatuated with him? It’s fair to say that he’s pretty widely known as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice, but there is so much of this man’s history that is entwined with that of Fauquier County. Marshall was born in what we now call Midland in 1755. His family resided on their 250-acre parcel which they named Licking Run until 1765, at which point the family moved into their new home, known as The Hollow, which Marshall’s father, Thomas, built just north of Markham. By the time Marshall’s family was ready for another move in 1773, John was the oldest of 10 children. Uprooting the family once again, Thomas Marshall moved his 12-strong clan just slightly east of The

Hollow to settle in at their Oak Hill estate in Delaplane. By the time young Marshall reached the age of 27 he entered the world of politics, taking a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates. He served in this role from 1782 to 1789 and then again from 1795 to 1796. During his first terms as Delegate he married Mary Willis Ambler and they had their first child, Thomas, the next year in 1984. The following year Marshall’s father moved to Kentucky, leaving the Deleplane estate at Oak Hill to John and his young family. “The Hollow and Oak Hill are still standing today,” declared Bob Sinclair, President of the Fauquier Heritage and Preservation Foundation, Inc. and Committee Chairman for Fauquier’s 250th Anniversary Celebration. “Oak Hill is now a private residence,” he explained, “but The Hollow is undergoing a complete restoration to its original, historical state.” Sinclair noted that the restoration is a bit more than halfway completed and is being funded by Dr. David Collins, CEO of Learning Tree International, who hopes to open the 200+ year old home to school tours and other youth groups so that they can see how the history of our nation is tied to that of our local area through the importance of great figures like John Marshall. As his political career was growing, so was the Marshall family. Sadly his personal life was filled with many more setbacks than his chosen profession. During the first 22 years of their marriage, John and Mary brought 10 children into their family. Four of the couple’s dear little ones departed the earth within the first few years of life: Rebecca at five days old in 1786, Mary Ann at the age of two in 1791, John at four months in 1792 and Charles at only eight months of age in 1803. Despite the grief of family losses, Marshall continued to help shape the policies and status of our new nation. In 1788 he was selected to be a part of the Virginia Convention, arranged through the Philadelphia Convention to determine the approval or rejection of the U.S. Constitution. Marshall, a staunch advocate of the Constitution, fought for it’s ratification and took special pains to ensure that Article III, which provided for a Federal judiciary, stayed in tact. With his Federalist ideals of a strong federal government and commercial interests, Marshall rallied against opponents like Patrick Henry who were more in favor of states’ rights and was vindicated by the 89 to 79 vote that ratified our nation’s Constitution. Although committed to helping mold the government of this new nation, Marshall kept his day-job as an attorney and enjoyed a successful law practice. President George Washington was impressed by Marshall’s confidence and dedication in his role as delegate and offered him the role of U.S. Attorney General in 1795, which Marshall declined. The following year he also declined Washington’s offer to make him minister to France. In 1797, however, he accepted the new president’s (John Adams) offer to serve on a three-person commission to represent the United States in diplomatic negotiations to France. When the trio of American political pioneers reached France, however, they were faced with corrupt officials who refused to enter into discussions and negotiations of any sort unless the Americans agreed to pay them off. When the three refused to pay up, the French government kicked them out. The ordeal became known as the XYZ Affair and when news of the scandal spread so did American resentment of the French. For his role in standing up to the French and not caving into their extortive plan, Marshall was 30

hailed a hero and was rewarded a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives (after turning down an appointment offer to serve in the Supreme Court) even though the congressional district he ran in was widely Democratic-Republican while Marshall still favored the Federalist party. Just a short time later, Marshall climbed upon yet another rung of the newly constructed United States political ladder, becoming Secretary of State in 1800- the position held today by Hilary Rodham Clinton. Marshall directed the negotiation of the Convention of 1800, ending the political strife between France and the U.S. The following year, Adams nominated Marshall again for a seat on the Supreme Court bench - this time for the position of Chief Justice, and this time the nomination was accepted and confirmed by the Senate. During the first few months of his tenure in the Supreme Court, Marshall also simultaneously kept his post as Secretary of State. As Chief Justice, Marshall was a force to be reckoned with, changing the way the Supreme Court handed down decisions and often leading the court to side with him in their verdicts. In fact only once during his Supreme Court career did a majority of the Justices firmly oppose Marshall’s decision - quite a feat considering Marshall is, even to date, the longest-serving Supreme Court Chief Justice in the United States, with almost 35 years to his credit. Before Marshall came to court, the Justices each authored their own official opinion for each case. Marshall decided that it would be less time-consuming and more consistent to have the court offer just one official opinion, which he, more often than not, penned himself. During his more than three decades on the Supreme Court, Marshall presided over several notable cases in U.S. history such as Marbury v. Madison (1803), McCulloch v. Maryland (1819) and Cohens v. Virginia (1821). With his strong opinions and broad interpretations of our nation’s newly composed constitution, Marshall is credited 32

540-351-0011 with creating several federal precedents that we still follow today in our legal system. “Marshall really gave teeth to the judiciary branch of our government,” said Sinclair, “before he came to the Supreme Court it just wasn’t on par with the legislative and executive branches, but he gave it strength and power.” In 1831 Marshall’s wife of 49 years passed away and some say he was never the same again, personally or politically. Marshall suffered another personal blow two years later when his 35-year old son, John, died. Marshall survived for just two years longer and passed away in Philadelphia at the age of 79 while seeking medical treatment for his failing health. Gone, but certainly not forgotten. The mark John Marshall left on our nation is indelible and the pride he instilled in our particular county is something that every resident should feel. So when journeying around our region, commuting to and from work and running daily errands take notice of the many ways in which we’ve honored this great American: Town of Marshall (previously Salem but was renamed for John Marshall in 1882), John Marshall Highway, John Marshall Library, John Marshall Soil an Water Conservation District or the John Marshall statue in front of our courthouse that greets everyone entering Old Town Warrenton. Cardio Health, Sunday Afternoon Retreat with Dr. Christopher Leet, Cardiologist and Lifestyle Therapist, Virginia Inglese, M.A., R.D., M.C.S.W. is being offered Sunday, May 17 at the Warrenton Aquatic and Recreation Facility, located at 800 Waterloo Road, Warrenton. History Comes Full Circle At Philip Carter Winery In Hume In the mid-1700s Charles Carter, the Chairman of Economic Development for the House of Burgesses, identified Virginia wine as an alternative to the region’s failing tobacco industry. At his homestead, known as Cleve Plantation, Carter planted 1800 European grape vines and began making wine on the banks of the Rappahannock River. By 1762 Carter’s venture into winemaking gained international acclaim. The London Society for the Encouragement of the Arts, Manufacture & Commerce awarded Carter with a gold medal for this first “spirited attempt towards the accomplishment of their views, respecting wine in America“. This was the first ever international acknowledgement for our young nation’s wine-making industry. In 2008, Philip Carter Strother, a descendent of Carter’s brother, Landon, brought the Carter name back into Virginia’s winemaking culture with his purchase of Stillhouse Vineyards. Strother renamed the vineyard and winery Philip Carter Winery of Virginia in recognition of the prestige of his family’s place in the history of the Commonwealth’s and the nation’s endeavors in quality wine. “My family’s more immediate background is in farming,” explained Strother, “and I can remember my grandfather complaining about how difficult it is to hold onto family farms and stave off major development in this area.” Strother knew long ago that he wanted to find a way to ensure that his family could hold onto their farm and continue to make it a viable and sustainable enterprise that would be passed down to future generations. With his Master’s of Law from George Washington University, Strother began practicing land use law in Richmond and soon acquired several winery owners as clients. He soaked up as much knowledge as he could and was elated when he heard, through the grapevine, that an established vineyard near his family’s farm in Delaplane was for sale. “Even while I was at law school I began to get a growing sense of needing to start a vineyard,” Strother noted, “It’s a smart way to make

farm land more profitable, viable and to promote conservation and responsible land use.” Last year Strother honored his family heritage in Virginia winemaking by planting 1800 new vines, just as Carter did over 250 years ago. The gesture signified the “rebirth” of Carter family wines in Virginia. This May, Strother has planned to celebrate the 247th anniversary of his ancestor’s receiving the gold medal award for his winemaking success at his Hume winery. The event will take place throughout the day on May 23, where Strother and his staff will host an array of entertainment and activities. In planning for the event, Strother was, with the aide of the Royal Society of the Arts in the United Kingdom, able to see exactly what the medallion presented to Carter looked like and has commissioned a replica of it to be made by renowned sculptor Paul DiPasquale. The replica will be on display during the anniversary celebration and miniature replicas will be handed out as gifts to visitors. Strother has arranged for reenactors to depict Thomas Jefferson and Charles Carter, two of Virginia’s most notable wine pioneers, to put on a short skit during the event. Philip Carter Winery guests will also be delighted by Aston Martin with several models of their esteemed collection, the Fauquier Equestrian Society giving demonstrations and the second annual Philip Carter Fencing Classic, sponsored in part by the Richmond Fencing Club in conjunction with the Virginia Division of Fencing. Free admission to this event also includes the enjoyment of live Jazz music and children’s activities. There will also be food and wine available to purchase throughout the festivities. Should Mother Nature weep on the 23rd, the anniversary celebration will take place on Sunday May 24. Tips to Promote Local Business Value Four tips for capturing more local resident spending: After seven years as a “commuter” resident of Fauquier County, I recently became a local business owner. Through the transition, I’ve discovered many businesses and local talent that I never knew existed. The experience made me stop and think about what local businesses could do to better communicate with potential customers and keep more spending in Fauquier County. After starting his career as a nuclear submarine officer, he obtained an MBA and transitioned to a career in business, marketing and telecommunication sales.

Know Your Market – How are potential customer needs changing? Markets Change! Every business must respond to those changes. There was a local grocer in a growing community where I used to live. He was the only grocer for 15 miles – until the Food Lion moved in next door. The small grocer responded quickly and revamped the store with a buffet style takeout and isles of gourmet food. This was the perfect way to make himself different and cater to the new and growing customer base that was arriving daily from Northern Virginia and Philadelphia to work at the new government research and test facility. The challenge goes out to each of us to keep up with the changing market and improve our businesses accordingly. It is important to support and serve our current customers, but to grow we must learn more about those we want to add to our customer list and cater to their needs. To increase local spending it is important to know the entire potential market, and especially the needs that are causing local residents to shop competitors in the neighboring counties. Differentiate – Set yourself apart from the competition: “Our price is higher, but we differentiate with service.” How many of us have heard – or said, this overused and too often inaccurate phrase?

First, make sure you are different – and better! Differentiation starts with your product and service mix, not with your advertising. Now that you know the changing market and know the customer needs, change your product and service offering to make it better than the competition. We can’t just say we are better, we have to be better, FROM THE CUSTOMERS PERSPECTIVE! Second, highlight that differentiation in everything you do. Obviously our advertising will focus on the differentiation and value, but it should also be reflected in the sale and delivery. Do your sales and service people reinforce the value? The checkout people at one grocery store consistently remind me that I’m saving money at their store with a simple “Mr. Gorman you saved $X.00 today shopping at…” And don’t forget to differentiate in your “elevator pitch”. Third, consistently deliver on the differentiation. You can say it as often as you like, but that doesn’t make it true. Customers and the community will evaluate your brand by the actual product and service that you deliver. None of us can afford the advertising it takes to hide consistent under-performance Build Your Brand – What customers expect from your name A brand is more than a logo, or your company slogan. The brand is actually the expectation of customers when they see that logo or hear that slogan. The best brands consistently deliver the expected product or service to their customers for an expected price. Think about your favorite brands and you will find that they are consistent (no matter who is working the counter), provide value for the price and meet your expectations nearly every time. Nation Celebrates 156 Years

UPPERVILLE, Va. – Since 1853, equestrians, horse breeders and spectators have gathered under the Grafton oaks in Upperville to admire some of the nation’s most talented horses and riders. The Upperville Colt & Horse Show (UCHS) is the oldest horse show in America. It was founded to encourage better breeding of horses. The one-day show, which began with a few breeding classes, has grown into a weeklong tradition with classes for children, adults and families. Each year beneath the oaks at Grafton Farm, more than 2,000 horse and rider combinations compete throughout the week. The show raises funds for the Upperville Volunteer Fire Department and other area charities. Once again, the event will recognize outstanding individuals and horses that have contributed to the UCHS goals through participation, horsemanship, leadership or service. Individuals and horses will be named to the Wall of Honor that remains on display on the show grounds during the entire event. The wall itself was made from a fallen oak tree from the show grounds property. “This is our opportunity to recognize the many individuals and horses who have made this unique event so spectacular,” states Tommy Jones, the show’s organizer. The 156th Upperville Colt & Horse Show takes place on June 1-7. The week culminates with the $100,000 Budweiser-Upperville Jumper Classic, which draws top riders from across the nation. The Jumper Classic will be held on Sunday, June 7 at 2:30 pm. Prior to the Jumper Classic, the Pedigree Country Fair will take place on Sunday from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm with pony rides and games for the kids. Other entertaining events include the Jack Russell Terrier races, Basset Hound demonstrations, and horse drawn carriages. We have had a cool spring thus far, but the temperatures are finally warming and everything is turning green. I know we are all watching the budget these days, but if you are in the mood for a little spring spruce up at your house, you should check out the newest store in Warrenton. Tuesday Morning, an outlet retailer, has opened in the Warrenton Towne Center, next to Bloom. They have many items for both the inside and outside of your home, at discount prices. They also have many gifts for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day or Graduation, all of which are just around the corner. Sadly, we have lost three more businesses recently, the Mattress Discounters, near Taco Bell, has closed and Black Wolf Coffee, which had a store next to Foster’s Grill and a kiosk in Bealeton, has also closed. Mom’s Apple Pie, which was located next to the Old Jail Museum, has closed to focus on their other locations in Northern Virginia. The owner of Edgar Snowden Ltd., located on Main Street, is retiring and will be closing the store. I am happy to say that sometimes there is a silver lining in that cloud. The old gas station that housed Mom’s Apple Pie will be back to life at the end of May when the Red Truck Bakery & Market opens. They have outgrown their farmhouse kitchen in Orlean and are bringing the business to Old Town Warrenton. They will be offering a complete line of fresh baked goods, homemade sandwiches, soups, salads and entrees-to-go. They will also have their own Red Truck Bakery coffee. Brian Noyes, the owner, likes to focus on using local produce and dairy items to make their goods the freshest 46

they can be. As they work on updating the building, they are trying to fit in a few tables for customers. This will be a great addition to Old Town Warrenton. We also have two other new businesses coming to Warrenton. Piedmont Motors has been busy readying the space that housed Hughes Motor Cars and will open a used car dealership there soon. And in the summer we will see Ledo Pizza move into one of the shops by the new Harris Teeter. They not only make square pizzas, but they also serve subs, flatbreads, salads, calzones and several entrees. Not a run of the mill pizza shop. Mojitos & Tapas is stepping things up a bit with socials for sophisticated (30+) adults on the 3rd Friday of each month. It starts around 10 pm when the dinner crowd leaves and music from the seventies and eighties cranks up for some great dancing fun. And if it is a great affordable dinner you want, don’t forget that every Wednesday is tropical shirt day. When you wear a tropical flowered shirt, you receive five dollars off your food bill. Only one discount per table though, and you cannot combine it with other offers or lunch specials.
