Fauquier & The Arts

Revived on Fauquier’s Stage... Fauquier High School Theatre will present the recent award-winning Broadway musical The Drowsy Chaperone on May 4, 5, 6, 11, and 12 in the Addison Lightfoot Auditorium. The cast of 32 and orchestra of 15 will perform the production, with book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar, and music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison. The Drowsy Chaperone opened on Broadway in 2006 and was originally intended as a spoof of old musicals. The show went on to win five Tony Awards and had major productions in Toronto, Los Angeles, New York, London, and Japan. In The Drowsy Chaperone, a Broadway musical fan spends his free time listening to LP recordings of old 1920s and 30s musicals. Suddenly, one night, one of his favorites comes to life in his apartment. “This is a wonderful and magical show that makes lots of gentle fun of Broadway,” said Director Kevin N. Mettinger, in his eleventh year as Director of Theatre. “I think the audience will enjoy the jokes, but there are also great song and dance numbers that are crowd-pleasers as well. We even work in some sly references to some of our own previous productions.” Tickets for The Drowsy Chaperone will be $10 for adults, and $7.50 for students and seniors (60+). This comedy is rated PG, according to Music Theatre International. Advance tickets can be purchased online at www.fhstheatre.org through Seat Yourself beginning April 23. Performances will be Friday, May 4, Saturday, May 5, Friday, May 11, and Saturday, May 12 at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, May 6 at 2 p.m. Unlike previous years, there will be no dinner and theatre option this year due to lack of interest and resources. For more information, contact Kevin Mettinger at 540-347-6100 x2317 or by e-mail at fhstheatre@ fcps1.org or kmettinger@fcps1.org or visit www.fhstheatre.org.

Bell Photos by Alan Levin

St. James’ bell has pealed for nearly a

By John T. Toler

Established in Warrenton in 1816, St. James’ Episcopal Church originally met in a frame building on Alexandria Pike, on the site of present-day First Baptist Church. In 1848, the congregation moved to a new brick structure on Culpeper Street.

in a nearby building destroyed the block bordered by Culpeper, Beckham and South Third streets – including the St. James’ sanctuary and recently-completed Parish Hall. (See Warrenton Lifestyle, November 2011).

The new church was graced with a tall steeple, and the congregation was called to worship by a 500-lb. bell that had been purchased for $110 from St. George’s Church in Fredericksburg. According to Richard J. Gookin of St. James’ History Committee, it was the first bell used by a church in Warrenton.

From the ashes a new church arose, funded only partially by insurance, the rest by pledges made by church members. Rebuilding began immediately, but several changes were made to the original design. In order to match the surviving and the new exterior walls, both were covered with roughcast plaster. To save on construction costs, the tall spire was not rebuilt; instead, a “battlemented parapet” was built atop the old tower.

The bell tolled through the Civil War years, rung by the church sexton for worship services that were often attended by women, girls and old men, as the young men had gone off to fight. Often during the Union occupation, Yankee soldiers far from home attended services with them. St. James’ was not used as a hospital – or stable – like the other churches in Warrenton, and survived the conflict relatively unscathed. St. James’ was also spared from the disastrous fire that devastated the western end of town in November 1909, but endured its own trial by fire on October 29, 1910. An accidental fire that started 8

The rebuilt church was formally reopened on June 23, 1912, and the following year, Mrs. Elizabeth Fairfax Gaines Smith gave the church a new bell in memory of her parents and brother. The bell was cast by the McShane Foundry of Baltimore, Md., and hung in the third level of the belfry. It bears the inscription:

The Gaines family was prominent in Warrenton for many years. William H. Gaines Sr. (1807-1885) came from Prince William County as a young man, working in several stores in Warrenton before becoming a partner with John Smith in a successful retail business. Later, Mr. Smith sold out to John A. Spilman, and the business was known as Gaines & Spilman.

Retiring from the retail business in 1850, Mr. Gaines was appointed a Justice of the Peace. Later, as Chief Magistrate, he was also the president of the County Court. This led to his appointment as a county judge, a post he held until Republican political activist William Mahone and Virginia Gov. William E. Cameron had most of the Democrats then in power with people of their party’s choosing. Judge Gaines was married to the former Mary Mildred Foster (1830-1894), who also came to Warrenton from Prince William County at an early age, attending Miss Swift’s School in the old Market House on Main Street. Judge and Mrs. Gaines lived at Paradise on the west side of town for many years, where they raised their family. Mrs. Gaines was involved with many of the ministries and charities at St. James’, and was completely devoted to her family. “Her memory can be nothing but a blessed influence to those who enjoyed an intimacy with her,” wrote Joseph A. Jeffries in Fauquier County 1840-1919. “God’s richest blessings must follow those for whose welfare her petitions were so constantly borne to a ‘throne of grace.’” Their eldest son William Henry Gaines Jr. (1856-1909) was a Warrenton businessman, and along with younger brother John Smith Gaines (1865-1922) established the Gaines & Bro. Bank on Culpeper Street in the mid1890s. Eldest daughter Elizabeth Fairfax Gaines married Judge Thomas Smith (1836-1918), the son of former Virginia Gov. William “Extra Billy” Smith, at St. James’ on October 10, 1896. Rev. George W. Nelson, who served as rector of St. James’ from 1880 until his death in 1903, performed the ceremony. Judge Smith was a former colonel in the Confederate Army commander of the 36th Virginia Regiment. He had returned to Warrenton to marry Miss Gaines after serving four years as the Chief Justice of the New Mexico Territory.

Ringing the Church Bell Two clappers, each operated by separate ropes hanging down into the church vestibule, are used to ring the bell at St. James’. The bell is rung by the main clapper, which is suspended from the center of the bell and strikes on the inside when the rope is pulled. The familiar peal is used as the call to worship, for weddings and other occasions. The other clapper is mounted on the side and strikes the outer rim, creating a different sound. It is “…probably meant to be used to toll the bell on solemn occasions,” according to Mr. Gookin. Other changes made to St. James in the last century include expansion of the sanctuary into the rebuilt parish hall, and the building of a new parish hall on the north side of

many times … and yet I never enter the building without feeling its hallowness, its sanctity,” wrote noted Warrenton chronicler Miss Marie Louise Evans in The Fauquier Democrat April 1950. “It is my church, where I am free to worship, love it, and be proud of it … and to know its beauty and security.”

SCHOOLHOUSE #18 CELEBRATES 125 YEARS! Schoolhouse #18 in Marshall is the only surviving, unmodified one-room schoolhouse in Fauquier County and a witness to the history and progress of Virginia’s free public education system. It was built in 1887 and served white students until 1910. It then became a school for the community’s African American students; one of 31 such schools in the county in the 1930’s. Schoolhouse #18 was then closed in 1963, but with the help of community groups and former students it was renovated, restored and maintained. Relay for Life Team Sydney’s Supporters are going with the Orange theme to raise awareness for Leukemia. Their first fundraising idea was to sell t-shirts. Each cancer has a designated color and Leukemia’s color is orange. You may have spotted our custom made shirts around town. It’s hard to miss those bright orange tie-dyed shirts titled “Supporting Sydney”. The team was amazed with the outpouring of support from the community. Over 200 shirts have been ordered. The supporters then came up with the idea to proudly wear our “Supporting Sydney” shirts on the same day, each week. It is our hope that we can “Paint the Town of Warrenton Orange” on Thursdays by wearing the Sydney shirts or any orange shirt. This orange visual aid around town is our way of showing Sydney that the town of Warrenton is not only praying for her, but also pulling together as a community and thinking of her. They say it takes a village to raise a child, but for Sydney it takes a town, our town. We hope you will join us in our efforts to “Paint the Town of Warrenton Orange” each Thursday for our brave little “angel girl.” Sydney’s Supporters is a highly motivated team of teachers, parents, and friends that will be participating in the Fauquier County Relay for Life event on June 2nd at Kettle Run High School. We wanted to do something for Sydney and this is our way of being proactive. With Leukemia being our targeted cancer, we have already raised over $5,000. for the American Cancer Society in the hopes to find a cure. Through our fundraising efforts, our team continues to bring awareness to many about this terrible disease. Contact dbiegert@fcps1.org for additional information.

A Model Home

You Can Turn your Home or Office from

Drab to Fab on a budget! by Liz Casazza

When you walk into your home or office does it reflect your style and personality? Are you comfortable? Do you enjoy spending time there? Does the space flow easily and function effectively for your needs? If you answered no to any of these questions—it may be time for an affordable interior decorating intervention. You can turn your space from drab to fab on a budget.

Home With a new or existing home there are many factors to consider before beginning your drab-to-fab project. You need to determine the following: Which room should be done first? How should the room function for all family members? ● How does each room flow into the next room? ● How can you reflect your style and personality in your living spaces? ● What is your budget? ● ●

Getting Started Many people believe they should start with the formal rooms as those are the rooms that their guests see first. It seems this may not be the best approach to take. “Since most people do not have an unlimited decorating budget to address their entire home—it is usually best to 16

start with the rooms where you and your family spend the most time,” Tracey Edwards, local interior decorating expert and owner of Drab to Fab Designs & Art Studio, explained. These include the kitchen, family room, and master bedroom. They are the rooms that create your personal refuge from the hustle bustle of everyday life. Once you have decided which room you want to tackle first— you need to make several additional determinations. “You need to define the function of the room for all of your family members; assess its connection and flow into adjoining rooms; and establish your preferred style and personality for this room,” Ms. Edwards shared. This complete picture of your room will guide your interior decorating plan. It is helpful to write down your answers, reflect on them, and revise them if needed before you move forward. Determining your budget will define the scope of what you can do. If you have a larger budget and would like new components throughout the room—it is best to work with a decorator to create a master plan that channels style and functionality throughout the space. If you are on a limited budget—you need to determine how your available funds can best be spent to provide you with the greatest return on your decorating investment. changes—you can take your rooms from ordinary to amazing! Ms. Edwards advised dividing a room into the following components: Floors Lighting Walls Furniture Window Treatments Accessories Address each component as your time and budget will allow. We all like instant gratification and would love to come home to a complete makeover—but the reality is we can achieve the same fantastic results if we take it step by step. ● ● ● ● ● ●

Changing flooring, adding ceiling lighting, and replacing furniture are expensive items that, once replaced, should last for many years. If you have large-ticket items such as furniture and flooring that you like or can live with—your decorating budget can be spent on walls, window treatments, and accessories to provide the desired final result.

Paint “Your walls provide you with the most significant return on your decorating investment,” Ms. Edwards noted. One or two cans of paint can dramatically change the look and feel of a room and painting can be done in a limited amount of time. Different painting techniques and finishes can give you the effect of wallpaper without the mess and cost: Antiquing is achieved by using a glaze over a finished coat of paint. Antiquing gives walls or cabinets the appearance of age and a historic aspect. This finish is very popular for cabinetry. ● Faux Marbleizing is obtained by applying multiple layers of paint using different techniques such as sponging, bristling, painting, and glazing. When done properly—it looks exactly like marble. This effect is an excellent choice for pillars and the tops of furniture. ● Stripes come to life using at least two different colors either horizontally or vertically. Vertical stripes on the bottom half of a wall with a painted finish above provides an added dimension to the wall. This is a good choice for bedrooms, bathrooms, and basements. ● Custom Murals provide a dramatic effect and can be costly (depending on the amount of detail, size, and location) so it is important to be sure it is something you want to look at for a long time. A child’s bedroom is a popular location for a mural. Kids like to have a theme room and it’s easy to paint their favorite animal, object, or scene to make their room their own. “Rather than painting the mural on the wall—it is a good idea to create it on canvas so it can be used later in another room or passed along to another family member or friend,” Ms. Edwards suggested. ●

Other faux finishes are achieved through ragging, rolling, stria, wood graining, plaster, metallic, and stencils. A fine arts background enhances a decorator’s ability to envision the endless possibilities that can be achieved with today’s different types of paints and glazes. Faux finishes are a great way to enhance the beauty of your walls or turn an old piece of furniture into something new and chic. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is picking a color for one room without considering how it will look going into an adjoining room. Also, if you have an open floor plan, it is important to know how to pick the right color for one wall that continues through multiple rooms. Before you buy the paint, be sure to have a master plan for the entire floor you are decorating. Different colors throughout one level will work if you stay within the same tones or color palette. For example—use all earth tones or all neutrals. It does not work well to have a pale, soft color in one room with the adjoining room in a bright and vibrant hue. Working with a decorator to develop your master plan ensures your decorating process will go smoothly and effectively as your time and budget allow.

Window Treatments During more than ten years of interior decorating for clients, Ms. Edwards has found that window treatments are intimidating for most people. Completely understandable! The possibilities are unlimited as you choose from drapes, shades, blinds, valances, fabric, wood, filtered light, blackout, and various types of hardware. Consulting with an interior decorator can provide you with options you may not have considered. Samples of some solutions to this stumbling block can be found at www.drabtofabdesigns.com. Because custom window treatments can be quite expensive—

it is very important to get it right the first time. If you’re on a tight budget— not to worry—there are many readymade options that are very affordable. By adding window treatments to your room, you provide privacy and a way to filter light while adding softness and texture to a flat symmetrical wall.

Accessories You can add a lot of flair and personality to a room with accessories and still remain within your budget. Pillows add bursts of color and additional textures to your room. Lamps provide additional mood or accent lighting, as well as elements of style to your room. Paintings, prints, and photographs personalize your space. Plants are beautiful, living accessories in a room— provided you take good care of them. “Accessories should be properly proportioned to the space; enhance and complement the style of the remainder of the room; and convey your personality,” Ms. Edwards recommended. If shopping for the perfect accessories doesn’t fit into your schedule or isn’t an activity you enjoy—consult a decorator. Often they can order accessories directly from their suppliers or will know which specific stores have exactly what you want.

Going Green We all know about recycle, repurpose, and reuse. This philosophy also applies to interior decorating—especially when you are on a tight budget. An object that no longer works well in one room may be able to be used effectively in another room. Refinishing a piece of furniture with a new stain or coat of paint can dramatically change that piece. New hardware on furniture can provide a completely new style to the piece. Yard sales and estate auctions are wonderful places to find inexpensive decorating pieces. You may find the perfect treasure to complete your room! 20

Office Most of us spend a lot of time in our offices. Your office should be comfortable and function effectively. It should be welcoming to your clients or customers and convey your style. When considering an interior decorating enhancement for your office: Determine all of the functions of your office space ● Choose the style you want to convey to your clients or customers ● Establish your budget ●

A decorator can take these three factors and develop a decorating plan that meets or exceeds your expectations.

Applicable decorating components discussed previously in this article should be considered and included.

Make Your Home or Office Your Castle Everyone deserves a home or office that is special and unique to them—a place that is beautiful and inviting, in addition to functioning well for all who use it. Finding a decorator who is willing to listen to your needs and wishes can save you a lot of time and money by removing the guesswork and eliminating costly mistakes. There are countless ways that you can turn your home or office from drab to fab affordably and effectively!

The Grass is always Greener… Grass Program to Aid Homeowners with Lawn Fertilization

There is still time this spring to get started creating a green oasis on your little slice of land. Don’t be envious of your neighbor’s lawn this year, get a head start by taking advantage of the “Green” Grass Program. Brought to Fauquier County residents by the Virginia Cooperative Extension in Fauquier County and the John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District, this program creates nutrient management plans for homeowners. It outlines the frequency and amount of fertilizer as well as other essential nutrients specific to their lawn. And it only costs $20! Healthier turf, monetary savings, and the knowledge that the necessary nutrients are applied to their lawn are certainly beneficial to any homeowner. While having a beautiful lawn is important to community aesthetics, becoming educated on proper lawn care practices will help protect the limited water supply in our community. Originally intended to help farmers manage animal waste, nutrient and 22

sediment runoff from fields, the “Green” Grass Program works with homeowners to promote similar goals. By having turfgrass growers manage the nutrients on their lawn, harmful runoff that can end up in our waterways is minimized. Farmers have actively made progress in lowering the amount of nutrients entering our waterways, but residential and urban nutrients are continuing to increase. Homeowners add to nutrient runoff by over fertilizing their lawns and adding supplements that aren’t needed. Nutrient runoff causes stress to underwater plant and animal life and can cause algae blooms that can be deadly to fish. Pet waste contributes to the amount of bacteria in streams, lowering the quality of water and increasing the likelihood of disease when people come in contact with these waterways.

Why You Should Participate: 1. A healthy lawn is the best

defense against weeds, insects or disease. 2. Turfgrass is a high

maintenance plant and to grow grass well it is important to know its needs. 3. Extension volunteers will

collect a soil sample and measure your total lawn area. 4. You will receive a lawn care

handbook and a customized lime and fertilizer plan for your lawn. 5. You will learn the proper

turf fertilization, maintenance practices, and timing to prevent problems. 6. It’s only $20!

Treat your home and your community to a healthy green and environmentally concious lawn this year by using the “Green” Grass Program. Warrenton Lifestyle

First Church of Christ, Scientist If you live a life as close to Jesus as possible, good things will happen.

This is the fifteenth in a series of articles about local churches and houses of worship. The purpose is to introduce you to the distinct features of each congregation, their philosophy and atmosphere. We believe that churches, temples, synagogues, etc are some of our best community centers. As you read about them each month we hope you will find one that interests you and your family. This month, we take a look at Warrenton Church of Christ.

Is there a church that has made a significant contribution to the spiritual healing of physical disease in the last one hundred years of Christian history? The answer is “yes”. It is the Christian Science church. Since its founding in 1892, more than 70,000 cases of spiritual healing have been documented in our church periodicals. A study of those documented cases from 1969-1988 identified 2,337 cases that were medically verified. It’s founder described her church as: “a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing.” The official website of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, christianscience.com, has present day video testimonies of healing, entitled

24

“Lives Lived - A Video Series.” Perusing these videos, it is possible to see that New Testament healing is occurring today all over the world. We are grateful to see many Christian churches embracing spiritual healing as an expectation in their modern day ministry, realizing God is not a respecter of persons and all may avail themselves of His ever present Love. We hope that Christian healing can become a dominant force in all Christian churches broadly, so Jesus’ teachings are lived in the most practical way. Church services for the local Christian Science church in Warrenton are conducted in their building located at 311 Jackson Street, right behind the McDonald’s restaurant. Sunday services are at 10:00 a.m. each Sunday of the year. A Wednesday evening service, comprised of testimonies of healing, is conducted at 7:30 p.m. Warrenton Lifestyle

each week at the same location. All are welcome to come and hear inspirational readings from the Holy Bible, as well as the textbook of our faith, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer, Founder and Leader of Christian Science. It is important to note, Christian Science is not Scientology and is not related in any way to that organization. In fact, Christian Science was discovered and founded by Mary Baker Eddy in the late 1800’s. As a young woman, Mrs. Eddy had many difficulties with her health. She searched diligently for cures both within the medical practice of the day, as well as through a study of the Bible. Midway through her long life of 90 years she experienced a fall on the ice and was severely injured. Asking for her Bible, she read an account of one of Jesus’ healings. In a moment of great inspiration, she was completely healed. She subsequently wrote a book based entirely on her study of the Bible, detailing her understanding of Jesus’ teachings that brought about a complete healing and many subsequent physical healings by her students, solely through prayer. Today there are Christian Science churches in more than 70 countries and members from more than 130 countries around the world, living the Tenets of Christian Science, found on page 497 in the book written by Mary Baker

The Christian Science church has a lay ministry. Members of our congregation are selected to read the sermon each Sunday. It consists of readings from the Bible as well as corresponding citations from our textbook, Science and Health, explaining the Bible texts. We regard these books as our Pastor. The same Sunday service is read in all of our churches worldwide. Our church also has a Sunday School for children up to the age of 20. The lessons focus on the Ten Commandments and Christ Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Discussions are lively, covering every area of life. Mary Baker Eddy wrote a series of poems in her life. Following is the first line from one of them.

“Saw ye my Savior? Heard ye the glad sound? Felt ye the power of the Word? ‘T’was the Truth that made us free, And was found by you and me In the life and the love of our Lord.”

step to a lean body What is Your Energy Balance Equation? by Kim Forsten

exercise + nutrition + you = The first step in this four-part series to a Lean Body was to makeover our kitchens. Hopefully, your kitchen is now a cooking-friendly environment, jam-packed with nutrient dense foods, and one of the “happiest” rooms in your house! Step 2 to a Lean Body is developing an understanding of your energy balance and finding the balance that works for you. What is energy balance? Very simply stated, it is the difference between the amount of daily calories you take in (energy input) and your daily energy output (exercise, normal daily activities, the energy consumed to run your bodily functions). The difference between these two numbers results in a negative balance (weight loss), a positive balance (weight gain) or an even balance (maintaining current weight). If only it were that simple.... Researchers have developed numerous calculations to help determine how best to formulate a weight loss plan. Unfortunately, there are many 30

equations, with many variables; it can be difficult and frustrating to decide which method will work best to achieve energy balance and meet your weightloss goals.

The Exercise Equation:

Experts recommend that an individual burn 1000 calories weekly to improve health, and 2000 calories weekly to lose weight and improve fitness levels. For many whose weight loss goal includes an exercise program to meet that goal, in order to burn enough calories to lose weight they will need to exercise harder, longer and/or more frequently to yield the 2000 calorie-burn. Research in this area suggests that requiring beginning exercisers to sustain longer/harder or more frequent workouts does not aid in their compliance for long term activity and weight loss. They simply don’t stick with it. Burning 1000 calories may be a more reasonable expectation

of beginners, and will likely result in some added health benefits, but the 1000 calorie-burn is unlikely to result in weight loss. Since most people want to lose weight, the exercise equation alone will not work for most people. The Metabolism Equation: Another important factor in determining one’s energy balance is calculating the Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), a key component in one’s ability to burn calories efficiently. RMR is based on the amount of muscle tissue in our bodies. Muscle burns calories more efficiently than fat, so it is important that we perform exercises that promote an increase in lean tissue. While the response time varies from person to person, research indicates that it can take between 6 and 10 weeks of regular resistance training to increase muscle enough to have a real impact on RMR. Research has also shown that the amount of energy (calories) we take in daily is vitally important to the growth of lean tissue.

lean body continued from Page 28

Unfortunately, those who seek to lose weight often go on a very low calorie diet, which conflicts with the body’s need for calories to build muscle. The body recognizes when it is not getting enough energy, and on a restricted calorie diet will store fat rather than building lean tissue. In the long run, weight training on a restricted calorie diet interferes with building muscle, and thus interferes with increasing the RMR that helps maintain a healthy weight.

The Nutrition Equation:

We must also consider one other factor associated with exercise and weight loss - the nutrition equation! As you can see from above, nutrition plays a key role in both the exercise equation and the metabolism equation, it may be the single most important equation but listen to this: Research has proven how even modest intensity exercise can boost caloric intake by up to 383 calories per day! Whether this increase is due to a need to satisfy hunger, restore energy or fulfilling the need that we feel like we should reward ourselves for working out, you can see how this can have a negative impact on the effort you are putting into your weight loss goals. In order to meet our weight loss goals, you have to keep the energy balance in check. Slow and steady wins the race on this win through adequate nutrition and weight lifting.

The YOU-equation:

The equations described above have the potential to be helpful; however, there simply is no universal one-size– fits-all formula that meets everyone’s needs. We are physically unique and face a host of unique challenges in our quest to achieve a lean body. Even with all the variables to consider, I believe there is a simple two-step approach that allows us to achieve our unique energy balance. I call it the You-equation: it’s simple, it’s specific to you, and you can make it happen. Most of us follow a pretty set routine from day to day, and creating the Youequation starts with writing down your daily schedule. (it is not necessary to do this every day, simply get a good idea overall from which can take action!)It may look something like this: 6:00am Rise - Shower and get ready for work and prep family for the day 6:45 Breakfast 7:15 Commute to work 8:15 Arrive at work 8:30-12:00 Seated at my work station 4:30-5:30 Commute Home 5:30 Take Child to soccer practice - sit and watch 6:30pm Pick up Dinner 7:00pm Arrive home eat dinner 7:15pm-8:15pm Laundry, Kitchen Clean up, Misc Chores 8:15pm-9:15pm Check emails while watching TV, pay bills etc. 9:15-10:15pm Complete household chores 10:15pm Get Ready for Bed 11:00pm -6:00am Sleep

In the above example, this person is awake for 17 hours, seated for an estimated 12 hours, sleeping for 7 hours, and moving around a maximum of 5 hours. Using this example, the goal would be to alter the energy balance by increasing the energy output, which can be done simply by moving more throughout the day. Step one to creating your You-equation is to look over your daily schedule and identify opportunities to increase movement; as little as 60 minutes spread across your day has the potential to significantly improve your energy balance. Step two in creating your You-equation involves writing down what you eat. Most of us follow a pretty routine schedule for what and when we eat; write it down in as much detail as possible. Again, keep it simple, you may not need to do this everyday, get a basic idea and than attack it with enthusiasm!) Identify those foods that do not supply you with valuable nutrition and eliminate (or at least reduce) them from your daily meal plan. Doing so will reduce your energy input, and create a healthier energy balance. Step 2 to a Lean Body is finding the right energy balance. Your unique Youequation, formulated from the specifics of your daily schedule and nutrition, will help you find your energy balance, and lead to a healthier, happier, leaner you. Remember, be consistent, be honest and commit to small improvements each and every day!

a look into the past We tend to like history and thankfully our town is full of it. We’ve been able to search through the library, browse land records, interview family members, and scavenge for everyday documents that would give us a glimpse of life in the past. Ms. Shipe, a long time Warrenton resident shared with us a school project she completed in elementary school in the 1920’s. Her project was a booklet on the town of Warrenton which was organized by a hand written index. She included information on the Origin, Geographical Advantages, Early Settlers, Historic Events, Old Landmarks, a hand-drawn map and more. She included postcards to serve as illustrations. We are delighted to share with you a quick look into the past through the eyes of a child. Thank you Ms. Shipe for your kindness in allowing us to share this with our readers.

making the

Most of us are aware that our lives consist of many dangers that are surrounding us every day. We see the big and the small. Looking outside, we are fully aware that we shouldn’t walk out into a busy street, or take our chances down a dark back alley. Over the last couple of years, we are finding some of the dangers that are literally lurking right under our noses! These days, we are also becoming increasingly aware that there are dangers that are right in our own homes, beginning with toxic household cleaners and moving all the way down the line to lead in our lipsticks. What is incredibly exciting to me is that people are beginning to sit up and take notice. We are no longer allowing big companies and commercial “spin” to dictate what is best for our families, and we are taking the health of ourselves and our children into our own hands. Here is what we are learning that we were never taught before... Genetically modified....BAD Chemicals in skin care....BAD Pesticides...BAD Big companies looking to take care of 40

their bottom line and not you...BAD ...and the list goes on. Going organic...GOOD Researching your own health...GOOD Buying Local...GOOD Reading labels...GOOD Knowing what you put on and in your body or your kids bodies...GOOD ...and that list goes on as well. The key: Knowledge is Power! However, taking that knowledge and translating that into a great list to shop from when you need to restock your home can be a pretty daunting task. Take it from me. We have been there. The day that I found out that genetically modified corn was the most likely culprit in my son’s facial ticks sent me right into the grocery store. But looking for “corn free” foods, or at least “organic non-gmo corn” listed as an ingredient, sent me into a tailspin! I called my Mom (isn’t it funny that as an adult we still do that?) and just cried to her on the phone, “I can’t do this! Everything has corn in it!” She encouraged me, and in my first and last 2 hour trip to the grocery store (to

which I was limited to about 5 different shelves), I left with my goods. What did I learn from all of that? 1) Any change you make IS possible, if you can learn to be patient with yourself. 2) Leaving out genetically modified corn for 2 months has seemingly cured my son of all facial ticks. 3) Stick to the brands that you know will consistently support your goals of living a healthier lifestyle. That third one has changed my life. I know that my son can have Annie’s Mac n cheese, and all of their snack packs. I know that EnviroKids is always going to have a fun, yummy cereal that I don’t have to monitor. I now shop in less than an hour and get on with my happy life. Fauquier Health Fauquier Hospital Introduces New Tool for 24/7 Stroke Care Fauquier Hospital was confirmed as a Certified Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission in February of 2011 and passed its annual inspection on March 23. The designation recognizes centers that make exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care. To receive accreditation, hospitals must demonstrate compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and standards. Fauquier Hospital’s stroke program provides a coordinated response to treat patients who present symptoms of a possible stroke. Ina Bowman, director of Fauquier Hospital’s Emergency Department, explained the importance of quick action in case of a stroke: “Some stroke patients can dramatically increase their chances of a full recovery if they receive certain medication within 180 minutes of the onset of symptoms.” When a potential stroke patient comes into the emergency room, an alert goes out to physicians, CAT scan staff and the laboratory, as well as speech, occupational, and physical therapists. These professionals work together to determine if the patient is a candidate for the clotbusting medication. Beginning April 2, Fauquier Hospital will have another tool to help address stroke symptoms quickly. Fauquier Hospital

Emergency Department physicians will collaborate via crystal clear video feed with board-certified neurologists to quickly and accurately diagnose and treat patients suffering from neurological emergencies, including stroke. This partnership with Specialists On Call, Inc., will give patients access to around-the-clock critical care in neurology. Chief Medical Officer Anhtai Nguyen, M.D., said, “Our neurologists provide consistent and high quality of care for all stroke patients, but cannot be on call every minute of every day. Because timely treatment is so crucial in stroke cases, we felt it was vital to always have a neurologist available to assess patients immediately.” “With Fauquier Hospital’s new state-of-theart technology, a neurologist will be able to read CT scans and lab results in real time, discuss treatment with the patient and the patient’s family, and recommend medication and procedures without delay.” Specialists on Call’s board-certified, fellowship-trained specialists adhere to strict standards of practice when discussing, diagnosing and recommending treatment options to hospital staff and patients. With videoconferencing technology and secure lines of communication, neurologists will interact directly with hospital physicians, nurses, patients and their families in

Fauquier History

Honoring a fallen hero from ‘the other side’

Memorial was built by a German who never forgot an American’s sacrifice by John T. Toler

During World War II, Mr. and Mrs. James W. Noland of Warrenton sent two sons off to fight. Eldest son James William Jr., known as “Billy,” joined the U. S. Army Air Forces, and younger brother Nelson C. Noland, known as “Monk,” enlisted in the Regular Army. Besides their parents, the two young men left six sisters behind.

Billy Noland underwent flight training and received his commission as a second lieutenant and wings upon graduation at Dothan Field, Alabama. While in training, he married the former Anne Childs Shaffer, the daughter of Mrs. Laurens M. Hamilton of The Plains and Harvey Shaffer of Milldale, Va. The couple had a daughter, Eva Stewart Noland, born in New York in February 1945, just weeks before he shipped out. When the war was over, Sgt. Monk Noland returned home to start a new life as a decorated veteran. But Billy did not come home to his wife and young daughter. He was killed when his P-47 “Thunderbolt” fighter went down in Germany. Arriving in Europe in March 1945, 2Lt. Noland flew combat missions with the 378th Fighter Squadron of the 362nd Fighter Group out of the airbase at Wormingford, Essex, England. The war in Europe ended in April 1945, and his unit, known as “Mogin’s Maulers,” was moved to the airbase in Straubin, Germany on June 5, 1945. Lt. Noland was reported missing in action on June 28, 1945, but it wasn’t until his family received a letter from the War Department on Sept. 8, 1945 that they learned that he had been killed months earlier in an airplane crash in the vicinity of Zandt, Germany. According to the letter, Lt. Noland had crashed “…because of extremely bad weather, while on a routine cross-country flight.” Lt. Noland’s remains were removed from the scene of the crash, and temporarily buried in an American cemetery

This portrait of Lt. Billy Noland hangs in the home of his brother, the late ‘Monk’ Noland and his wife, Jane. It was painted for Billy’s parents by Alexandra Korsakov. 46

near the border of France and Germany. Later, he was permanently laid to rest in the new Lorraine American Cemetery at St. Avold, France, in Plot F, Row 4 Grave 23. “Customary military funeral services were conducted over the grave at the time of the burial,” according to the letter sent March 31, 1949 by Maj. Gen. H. Feldman to Lt. Noland’s widow Anne, who was still living in Warrenton at the time.

For years, his family only vaguely knew the circumstances of Lt. Billy Noland’s death. His widow remarried, and eventually moved to Washington State; over the years, his parents and siblings passed away. But back in the German village near where the plane went down, Rudi Goetz, a six-year-old boy who came to the crash scene, was deeply affected by the death of a pilot he never knew.

Lt. Noland’s Last Flight Due to the sketchy details released by the War Department, the family never knew what happened, and assumed for years that Billy had crashed into a mountain during a storm, or that his plane crashed after being struck by lightning. Remarkably, it was the extensive research done years later by Rudi Goetz and his colleague, Rudolf Hager, which filled in many of the gaps in the story. Among their findings was a letter from Chuck Mann, secretary of the 362nd Fighter Group Assn., which gave a detailed account of the events leading up to the crash. noland continued on Page 50

“Today I talked with the flight leader of the flight on which Lt. Billy Noland disappeared on 28 June 1945, and learned that they were on a mission to ferry our P-47s to a depot in Nuremberg, as the Group was destined at that time to go directly to the Philippines to help finish the Japanese. “The weather was very rough – very low, broken clouds – and as was our discipline, the flight leader flew on instruments while the wingmen were to hold tight formation at all times. Billy was #4, which meant that he was the last in the formation. During a particularly rough cloud entry, the #3 man on whom Billy was flying lost sight of the leader, and did as instructed: turning 5 degrees away from the flight for safety. “Apparently, Billy also lost sight of #3, on whom he was to maintain close formation. Repeated radio calls to Billy weren’t answered, so they never knew exactly where he was lost … he was the last pilot the 362nd lost in the European Theater of Operation.”

Personal effects of Lt. Billy Noland returned to his family included this ID bracelet and his pilot’s wings (seen on portrait).

Eyewitnesses Georg Gleser and Konrad Halbig of Bitz testified to this spectacular maneuver; in their opinion, the aircraft’s engine had failed and the pilot was trying to land at the fields at Anger.

“It then appeared that the pilot lost total control of his plane. Rapidly LT. J.W. ‘BILLY’ NOLAND descending, it took a final left turn, and disappeared into the forest owned by Franz Vogel. Locating surviving members of Lt. Noland’s family back in the U.S. proved problematic. After Mr. Hager ascertained Lt. Noland’s name and likely home state, he got special assistance from Siegfried Strobl, a friend and German businessman who spent part of the year living near Philadelphia. In addition, he spoke English. Mr. Strobl began contacting people in Virginia named Noland, asking them if they were related to Lt. James William Noland. In early June 2004, he called Neal D. Noland, a first cousin of Monk and Billy who lives in Berryville, Va. Neal took down the information and called Monk’s widow, Jane Noland, in Warrenton. Mrs. Noland called Mr. Strobl and learned that German citizens living in Zandt and the surrounding area had built a memorial to Lt. Noland at the scene of the crash, and were planning a dedication ceremony just days away. Mrs. Noland, a Maryland native who married Monk in 1958, never met Billy Noland. But she knew just about as much about the incident as anyone else in the family. She was happy to assist the Germans, and sent them a photograph of Billy by email that was received just in time to run in the local newspaper. The photograph was made into a ceramic plaque and placed on the memorial for the dedication, which took place on June 12, 2004. According to newspaper accounts, about 100 persons attended the

Artwork at the top of the memorial depicts Lt. Noland’s P-47 coming down in flames, with the message in German, ‘An American pilot died here of a plane crash on June 28, 1945. May his soul rest in peace.’ It was made of oak by local craftsman Max Boehm, and the plaque painted by artist Hans Schuster.

dedication, including Josef Bienek, the mayor of Zandt; Rev. Franz Gloetzner, the local pastor who blessed the monument; Col. Guenter Goehler, commander of the airbase where Lt. Noland had been stationed; and members of the Veterans and Soldiers Club of Bitz. Mrs. Noland shared the new information and newspaper clippings about the memorial with her family, and with Billy’s widow, Anne S. Humes, who deeply appreciated what had been done. “It is a dear memorial, and I can’t get over those people even thinking of going to all that trouble nearly 60

years later,” wrote Mrs. Humes, who passed away in 2009. “Somehow, it is good to know that they saw the plane come down, and made this memorial to commemorate it. I’m sure Billy is pleased.” Mrs. Jane Noland agreed. “The sincerity of the little boy who was so deeply touched by the incident he witnessed, and still wanted to bring it to a conclusion some 60 years later is heartwarming. What a lovely and thoughtful act for him and for all who became involved in this endeavor – so greatly appreciated by all of Billy’s surviving family.”

The Topless Raw Oysters are flavorful, served raw or steamed and come in a half dozen or a dozen. Twisted Shrimp is not officially listed on the menu but these golden fried shrimp, drizzled in a sweet and spicy glaze are available - be sure to ask. A great lunch or light dinner option would be a soup and salad pairing. Both of their soups are made from house recipes, the Maryland Crab Soup is tomato-based adorned with vegetables and crab. Their Claim Chowder is a New England style and definitely a customer favorite. Order a plentiful House Salad with your choice of dressing or a Salad Platter with your choice of blackened shrimp, scallops or chicken breast.

Their Sandwich and Entrée plates are a collection of the ocean’s most delicious seafood along with filling side dishes. The delicately seasoned Crab Cake is succulent and placed upon a bun, garnished with lettuce, tomato and onion. A large piece of whiting wrapped in lightly fried house beer batter makes their tasty Fish Sandwich. Both the Sea Scallop and Shrimp entrees are battered, fried and served with your choice of two sides. The Steamed Shrimp are dressed in the sisters’ spices and served hot. This seafood restaurant also serves a hand-cut fillet that can be paired with scallops, shrimp, soft shell crab, crab cake, snow crab cluster, or fish to create their Make-A-Steak. Snow Crab Legs, Deviled Crab, and Soft Shell Crabs round out their menu. Into All-You-Can-Eat? Twisted Sister has two specials. For only $45 it includes Snow Crab Legs, Fried Fish, Fried Clams and unlimited sides. If you’re ready for Blue Crabs they offer a special for $40 and includes a side special. Twisted Sister Seafood is located at 6806 James Madison Highway in the previous Ben & Mary’s Steakhouse building. They are open five days a week beginning Wednesday and Thursday from 4:00pm to 9:00pm and Friday through Sunday from 12:00pm to 9:00pm. Swing in for lunch or dinner to have the sisters fulfill your seafood fix. Biz Buzz by Lawrence K. Emerson

Fauquier County wants a rainmaker. Or, at least, the board of supervisors seeks some “drought” relief in the form of new tax revenue and job opportunities. Over the last couple of decades, Fauquier’s government and school system have grown dramatically. New schools, libraries, parks and fire/rescue stations represent only the beginning. The operation and staffing of those public facilities have added millions of dollars in annual expenses. The recession dramatically slowed the flow of new money to pay those bills: fees and taxes. And, the county already collected only about onefifth of its “tax base” from businesses. So, the supervisors have committed to jumpstarting Fauquier’s fledgling economic development efforts. Last month’s resignation of Talmage Reeves, the county’s first economic development director, leaves a void. But, it also gives the board a chance to refocus. In a recent “work session,” the supervisors discussed a range of options, from outsourcing business development to hiring an experienced pro, who conceivably would become county government’s highest-paid employee, perhaps in the range of $200,000 annually.

Even though the county created Mr. Reeves’ position in 1999, Fauquier has continued to struggle with its vision for business growth in a community that historically had made development difficult, timeconsuming and costly. Because of the fiscal realities of a flat tax base, this board promises that things have changed. Board members admit they will have to allocate more than the $9,000 budgeted for advertising to lure new businesses. The county probably will have to spend more for travel and entertainment if it wants a seat at the table with business decision-makers. And, it may have to pay significantly more than the $109,000 salary Mr. Reeves earned. More daunting, however, will be the challenges of a global economy, with widely distributed work. Fauquier never adopted the old economic development model of industrial parks and big tax breaks for new firms. (The county does have a new business incentive program.) So, what will work in this changed economy and in this community? What does Fauquier want in terms of new business? County leaders still struggle with those questions. Perhaps this exercise will unite government, business and education leaders in the hunt for appropriate, sustainable, good-job-creating economic growth that everyone claims to want. It promises to be interesting. In other news . . . Fauquier Health has advanced its plan to build a 52,000-square-foot medical office building at Carriage House Lane and West Shirley Avenue. The Warrenton Town Council last month postponed approval in an effort to get the hospital to adjust its site plan with more landscape buffering and parking lot design.
