Sunny Reynolds with Lyric & Asa A. at Claude Moore Fun for All Playground.
I am Sunny Reynolds and I am a committed, enthusiastic, go-getter! There is nothing progressive about standing still. Council members should be ambassadors for our diverse community, but also implementers of healthy change. If it matters to you — it matters to me. You have the opportunity to help Warrenton grow, with balance and vision, so that our children and their children can live and work here too. It is time to move forward. I will be your independent voice on Town Council advocating and acting on behalf of your safety, health, well-being and quality of life — working from day one in office to make real things happen! This is what I propose: ✓ Increase cooperation between Town and County governments. We cannot and should not work unconnected. Let’s appoint a Town-sponsored economic development coordinator to facilitate communication and collaborative efforts between the Town and County. We can do this! ✓ Complete the trails project after all these years. Let’s make this happen! ✓ Find an anchor tenant for our empty “Borders” space. It has been sitting empty for more than three years. Let’s think boldly — why not a government contractor? It does not have to be retail. Let’s go recruiting! ✓ Make our Farmers’ Market the best in the region. Support our local farmers, and why not have our artists, craftsmen and musicians there too? We can be an inspiration to other communities!
✓ Make one of our our greatest recreational assets, the WARF, sustainable. What about soliciting more corporate sponsors, coordinating with the County, and considering solar panels on the roof to heat the pool? We can do this! ✓ Increase Town funding for the Warrenton Fire Department and the Department of Emergency Management. Funding has not increased sine 1998 and the Town continues to add rooftops. We depend on their service! ✓ Create an outreach committee. Let’s create a group of “doers” to work with our local businesses and citizens to identify solutions to community concerns, like the sign ordinance and street closings for events. We can do this! ✓ Attract seasonal tourists and their dollars. Consider promoting our areas charms statewide! Balance this against preserving our “Small Town” atmosphere. I sit on the tourism board. We can make this happen!
“Grow with discipline. Balance intuition with rigor. Innovate around the core. Don’t embrace the status quo. Find new ways to see. Listen with empathy and over communicate with transparency.” - Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks
We can do all this and more! It begins with your vote. See you on May 6. Approved and paid for by Sunny Reynolds for Town Council.

From The SOP
(son of publisher)
“Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name And they’re always glad you came You wanna be where you can see our troubles are all the same You wanna be where everybody knows your name” Gary Portnoy’s 1982 hit always made me laugh because I used to think of it as my father’s theme song when we would be out and about in Warrenton. Around age 9, it was an annoyance to me to have to go to the grocery store with him, or go to the Post Office on Main Street, and I especially did not want to have to tag along to a Fauquier County Chamber of Commerce event. Everywhere we went, someone knew my father. I had to stop, wait around, shuffle my feet, and be the plus-1 to a conversation between my father and some stranger from Warrenton. May is going to be my last month here at Piedmont Press & Graphics. I am officially retiring from the print business to go back to school in Richmond. What started out as a recent graduate looking for a job and a father needing someone to fill in and make deliveries while that graduate looked for a job ended up turning in so much more than I would have imagined.
During that time, I spoke to many people from Warrenton on the phone, met them at Fauquier and Greater Warrenton Chamber events, learned every back road and quickest route from A to B, and worked with a lot of great people both at Piedmont Press & The Warrenton Lifestyle and its customers. One takes a lot of pride each and every month watching this magazine become what it does from scratch. With that, I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for making my time here enjoyable and full of new experiences. We never truly know the twists and turns our lives will take. I never once thought I would be a part of being a 3rd generation family printer. I also never thought I would see the day where I couldn’t go to Harris Teeter and run into someone I know be it family, friend, work acquaintance or just someone you see as a familiar face in town. The strangers became people. Warrenton people. The irony of seeing this come full circle is what brought back the old memories, and I wouldn’t trade what I experienced here for anything. Until next time, Warrenton.

Dark Horse Theatre Company Embraces New Home
he Theatre on the Green at Vint Hill will welcome the troupe from the newly relocated Dark Horse Theatre Company this month. This former northern Virginia theater company has been providing highlevel performances in Adams Morgan at the D.C. Art Center since 2009. Each performance calls together a collection of actors, directors, designers, writers, visual artists and specialists to develop engaging theatrical work. Lucky for Fauquier County, Dark Horse Theatre Company is now calling Warrenton home and will offer the same level of expertise and exciting opportunities. “One of our missions is to keep professional theater affordable for everyone,” said founder Natasha Parnian. “I wanted to have all different kinds of artists involved in these productions.” Feeling a little lost in the crowd of boutique theater groups, Parnian longed for a home within a community that would embrace an arts-based organization. Personally having just relocated to Warrenton with her husband, she began looking for a new base for the company, which would need to include a performance space. Her search efforts brought her to Vint Hill where she fell in love with the nostalgic theater and its proximity to Northern Virginia. “I’ve talked to so many people just getting a feel for the arts community out here and there is such a rich artistic appreciation,” Parnian mentioned. “They deserve a great 8

group of performing artists; quality and professional.” Dark Horse utilizes a studio theater philosophy meaning each show is developed under a workshop atmosphere. Parnian, who is also the Managing Artistic Director, explained that each production will evolve from the first reading through closing night which allows for growth and development. She said that she works with the actors and places emphasis on table work early in the process as well as homework and research. With such a thorough operation, they have an average production time of four months from casting to opening night. This helps ensure the artistry for each show.
“We select the top actors we can get for each part,” Parnian began to explain. “We spend a month doing table work by analyzing the script and really understanding what is going on before the actors even go on their feet. They are to know why they are doing something physically before they present.” The new space will allow Dark Horse to offer our community accessible and affordable shows, an idea that Parnian finds extremely important. Traditionally, professional performances can cost about $60 per ticket but they will be offering them at $20. Audiences will have a complete experience beginning with ticket unbridled continued on page 10 Warrenton Lifestyle

unbridled continued from page 8 purchase to closing curtain and can expect provocative productions that include classical, contemporary and original works. “We do a new play every year and the playwright this time is local and it’s set locally which is really neat,” Parnian explained. “The next show we are doing is a comedy and then we are going to do a classic and kind of see what sticks. Evaluate and adjust, adjust, adjust - because I want people to come see us.” The upcoming May performance, Sunday’s Child, is a world premier. The playwright Jennifer S. Jones (located in Alexandria) wrote this play with a dollhouse view into a sensationalized family on television that has a child missing. “It’s every parents worst nightmare. Two years ago the Blakemore’s four year old son Toby disappeared from their backyard. Now it is Christmas and they have gathered again to try to make sense of what happened. A play about the power of family and the length we will go to protect those we love, Sunday’s Child ask the question: In a similar situation, what would you do? These families have press coverage on them day and night and you experience how their family has been broken apart.”
A couple of laughs front row before the real work begins.
Although the setting is stressful and highly emotional the play also offers some very light and funny moments. Parnian thinks that it will really make the audience question whether they can laugh or remain solemn. She hopes that by opening with a play that is essentially local she will capture the attention of those in the community with an appreciation or interest in the arts. “I really hope people give us a chance,” Parnian said. In addition to entertainment Parnian is excited to offer educational opportunities to the community. They’ve partnered with Fauquier County Parks and Recreation to offer acting classes for children (ages 7-12), teens (ages 13-17) and adults. “We are an education theater company,” Parnian stated. “If someone comes in and says ‘I want to learn sound design’ we will teach them, get them up and running and they will be doing sound for the next show. It’s important to us – how else are people going to learn?” Dark Horse is already becoming attuned to the lifestyle and the people in Warrenton. They are showing promising signs of making our community richer with their offerings. “I’m looking forward to future shows and getting the community more involved. I don’t want us to be an untouchable professional theater - that

sounds scary - I want us to be inclusive and welcoming.” Dark Horse Theatre Company will present Sunday’s Child from May 23, 2014 through June 7, 2014 at The Theatre on the Green at Vint Hill. Fauquier Health Arthroscopic Hip Surgery Now Available at Fauquier Hospital Arthroscopic surgeries are becoming the norm — shoulder and knee options have been available for years. But the specialized technology necessary for arthroscopic hip surgeries has recently caught up, and the procedure is now being offered in Fauquier County by orthopedic surgeon James Ward, M.D. Hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive method used to diagnose or treat hip pain that may result from injury, bone fragments, damaged cartilage or inflamed tissue around the joint. What Is It? During arthroscopy, the surgeon makes small incisions near the patient’s hip. An arthroscope — a thin tube with a tiny camera attached to it — is inserted through an incision so the surgeon can see inside the joint. Medical instruments may be inserted in the other incisions to fix tears or remove pieces of bone. Patients are under general anesthesia during hip arthroscopy, which is an outpatient procedure. “Arthroscopic surgery is much less traumatic to the muscles around the hip joint. But remember, a torn labrum (soft, elastic tissue in the
hip joint) will still take six weeks to heal,” says Dr. Ward. Who Can Benefit? Not everyone with hip pain is a good candidate for hip arthroscopy. Dr. Ward explains, “For the right patient with the right diagnosis, hip arthroscopy is very successful. Those who have tears in the labrum of the hip joint or impingement of the joint from an injury, for instance, will benefit.”
arthroscopy can make a big difference. It’s nice when you see people out of pain and getting back to doing the things they like to do.”
Hip arthroscopy is also meant for a different demographic than the typical hip surgery. Dr. Ward says, “It is intended for the younger, more active patient who has a muscle tear or similar trauma deep within the hip joint. Hip arthroscopy is a great alternative to open surgery for certain diagnoses, but it will not regrow cartilage or help with degenerative joints.” Dr. Ward also points out that although arthroscopic surgery is minimally invasive, it’s not the first course of action when a patient comes in with hip pain. “We may first try injections or physical therapy. Not everyone needs surgery.” He adds, “For those who are good candidates, hip

SHAME by Dr. Robert Iadeluca
At the age of nine I started to wet the bed. I hadn’t wet the bed for years. And this went on for a period of time. I tried everything I knew to prevent it. I tried staying awake all night but eventually fell asleep and there it was again – waking up in wet sheets. I tried not drinking anything after five o’clock but it made no difference.
My shame was beyond belief. I was humiliated. Ultimately my aunt took me to a pediatric physician, nothing physically wrong was found and the physician surmised that there was apparently an emotional cause. All this happened shortly after the death of my mother. In time the bedwetting ceased. Nothing hurts more deeply than shame. It implies weakness. It suggests inadequacy. It separates one from others who, to all appearances, do not do shameful things. It is especially hurtful to boys who, being told that they are little men, cannot accept a sign of weakness. As my patients share their family problems, they may speak to me of what they call their guilt regarding times when they lied to cover up less than honorable actions but what they actually feel is shame. Although the terms guilt and shame are commonly used to imply the same concept, they are, in fact, very different. Shame involves not meeting a high standard set by ones own self – a standard connected to the sense of who we are. In my opening paragraph it was my own strong belief that I was old enough to remain dry throughout the night. Shame hurts the self image that, depending on one’s
14
age, may have been built up over many years. Many years ago a patient who was in the process of recovering from addiction to alcohol spoke of her feelings of dishonor when at times she woke up in motel rooms with men who were strangers. As she explained it during her recovery, “I looked out the window and watched mothers putting their children on the school bus. I used to be that mother with no intention of ever doing what I later found myself doing.” Shame reminds ourselves of things we don’t like about ourselves. Guilt, on the other hand, is associated with accountability to others. Our actions have injured someone or something. Going through a red light and hitting another car is an event where one may rightly say he is guilty. His action relates to others. He did something wrong and is accountable not only to the driver of the car but to the law. Of the two emotions, shame is by far the most powerful. Others may forgive us, the law may acquit us but we must live with ourselves. We are with us until the last day of our lives. It is possible to spend one’s entire life carrying blame and living in fear of the consequences. This sense of being worthless crowds out other feelings and without our realizing it, we often exhibit this feeling with a behavior observed by others. The sculptor Rodin recognized this by creating the statue “Eve” standing in the Garden of Eden after the Fall with lowered head and downcast eyes. The term “shame” comes to us from the Old shame continued on page 16 Warrenton Lifestyle

shame continued from page 14
English word “scamu” – a feeling of disgrace, dishonor or loss of esteem. It is also derived from an even older word meaning “cover,” again demonstrated in the statue by Eve’s covering her breasts. Shame haunts us long after the event. It is internalized leaving us with a negative assessment of our entire being. When I was twelve years old, I was caught shoplifting. A buddy of mine and I had been successful at this for a few weeks – one of us holding the attention of the shop owner while the other pilfered some small item for which we actually had no need. Flush with success, I decided one day that I didn’t need my buddy’s help and that I could enter business on my own. Within minutes I was caught with, if I remember correctly, two salt and pepper shakers in my pocket. I grew up in a small town where as the expression goes, “everybody knew everyone.” To this day I remember what I pleadingly asked the store owner. Not “please don’t tell the cops” but “please don’t tell my father.” I was disgraced. My father probably would have merely bawled me out but my shame would have been unbearable. He never told my father and I never shoplifted again. No one purposely does shameful things. Very simply, life happens and one may want to hide, disappear or even die. What then often occurs is an effort to blame the other person, minimize the action, or to claim not to care. I have shared with you, my dear reader, a couple of the embarrassing events in my life. There have been others but I am not going to tell you. I would not be able to look you in the eye. How do we forgive ourselves? In this case I forgave myself by changing my behavior. The woman with the illness of alcoholism forgave herself by attending AA meetings and going for therapy. She recognized that the past can not be changed, apologized to herself, and then – this is most important – made amends by moving on toward a solution. The ego within us that causes us to do shameful things in the first place does not want to lose control. It is time for humility – time to thank our higher self for allowing us to see that we are not perfect. When we forgive ourselves we let go, to some small extent, of that ego which keeps us trapped.

Part 1: Early times, and life in New York and Warrenton The Springs Valley southwest of Warrenton is home to many historic properties, some dating back to the early 18th century. Most were built along the old “Springs Pike” that once linked Warrenton and Culpeper. During the 20th century, a number of Springs Valley properties changed hands, but the landscape has remained largely unchanged. Today, many of the properties in the valley are permanently protected by conservation easements. From the 1920s until the mid1970s, Robert C. Winmill (1884-1957) and his wife Viola T. Winmill (18911975) bought and sold several tracts of land in the Springs Valley, notably Clovelly and Whiffle Tree (later “Whiffletree”) Farm. 20
While not the oldest family or largest landowners in the area, their story is unique in many ways, and their lives recall a time that is passing from memory to legend. Born on a small farm northwest of Warrenton, Robert Campbell Winmill was the son of Albert Winmill (18521904), who immigrated to Virginia from England in 1875, and later married Josephine Campbell (18551910). Albert was new to America, but Josephine had deep roots here, being the great-granddaughter of Alexander Spotswood, the first governor of Virginia, according to family historian Virginia Winmill Livingstone Armstrong in Gone Away With the Winmills (1977).
Robert, known throughout his life as “Bobby,” was Albert and Josephine’s first born, and they had five more children, three who lived to adulthood: Edgar Wolten (1881-1947), known as “Bunny;” J. Bassett; and their sister Florence (Mrs. Robert Bassford, 18921959). Bobby went to school in Warrenton in the old building on Academy Hill, and took odd jobs in town to help the family. He was working as the night clerk in the Warren Green Hotel when his father died in 1904, and barely out of his teens, Bobby took on the responsibility of helping support his mother and his siblings. A hard worker, Bobby made the most of his position at the Warren Green, which after the burning of the hotels at Fauquier Springs in 1901 was the only hotel in the area. “With his good humor and quick intelligence he made friends easily,” according to Mrs. Armstrong. He so impressed a businessman from New York that he offered to get Bobby a job as a “runner” for the Fifth Avenue Trust Co. in the city. winmills continued on page 22 Warrenton Lifestyle

Bobby was initially paid $5 a week as a runner. Fortunately, his mother had a friend in the city who offered him room and board at an affordable rate, and he lived close enough to walk to work. The bank management noticed Bobby’s enthusiasm and work ethic, and he was soon promoted to junior loan officer. By 1907, he was offered another promotion, but he realized that since he was working for a familyowned bank, he would never make it into top management. Bobby resigned, and started a new stock brokerage firm with Harry Fish, a real estate broker he had met at the bank. The firm of Winmill and Fish had only a brief start before the Panic of 1907, which convinced Mr. Fish to drop out of the business. Seeking another partner, Bobby contacted Edward C. Gude, who owned an outdoor advertising company in New York. “Attracted by Bobby’s ambition and the limited part he would be expected to play, he offered to join him in the new venture, and Gude, Winmill and Company was formed,” wrote Mrs. Armstrong. It would grow and become 22

In 1910, Bobby moved to Scarsdale, N.Y., where he shared a home with roommates and commuted to work in the city each day. Also that year, his brother “Bunny” Winmill joined Gude, Winmill and Company. Bobby’s life would change forever that summer, when he was invited to a house party at the summer home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Allen Townsend at Ardsley-on-the-Hudson. Miss Viola Townsend J. Allen Townsend was a respected New York attorney, and his wife Viola, the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Dexter Hawkins, was prominent in New York society. The Townsends lived most of the year in a brownstone home on Madison Avenue in the Murray Hill District, where their daughters Viola, Adeline and Marion were born. From an early age, daughter Viola was interested in the horses and carriages she saw in the city, and the family had a donkey named George they boarded nearby and often drove, pulling a cart. While riding sidesaddle in 1902, Viola suffered severe head injuries when she was thrown from her horse and dragged. She remained

unconscious for almost a month, and when she awoke, Viola was sometimes delirious, and had to learn how to talk, read, write and count, skills she had lost. Her recovery took a full year. Later, Viola took part in many of the experiences enjoyed by girls in her social circle – a three-month tour of Europe, dances at her father’s clubs, and invitations to subscription dances in the finest hotels in New York. In October 1909, Viola was presented to society at a tea given by her mother at their home in the city. The debut was followed by a supper dance in her honor on Dec. 22, 1909, at the Colony Club. The following summer Viola met Bobby Winmill at her parents’ house party. “He was immediately much attracted to Viola, her good looks, charm and vivacity being supported by enthusiasm for horses,” wrote Mrs. Armstrong. “Acquaintance led to friendship and future visits.” After a two-year courtship, they were engaged in October 1912, and married on February 4, 1913. Gude, Winmill & Co. was growing, and later that year the Winmills bought the c. 1740 Borradil Farm in Mill Neck, on Long Island. Just before Viola went into labor, he was critically injured in a polo match, suffering severe back injuries and losing an eye. It was uncertain if he would survive, and if he did, he might not be able to walk. Remarkably, he recovered, and would welcome a fourth child, Josephine Spotswood, born in September 1919.
who named the property “Clovelly.” The Barretts sold Clovelly to Mr. Matthews in 1923. Viola was thrilled with the new acquisition, and hired New York architect William Lawrence Bottomley to design the modifications and additions to the house. A master bedroom was added to the main floor off the breakfast-
A home in Fauquier County The Winmills were active in the New York City and Long Island social and equestrian scene, and in 1924, their horse “Surf” won the first running of the Temple Gwathmey Memorial race at Belmont Park. But by then, both Bobby and Viola were seeking relief from the pressures of their full social life. They started spending weekends – and longer –at the Nordix Club north of Warrenton (now part of Warrenton Lakes), and foxhunting with the local clubs. In 1925, Bobby purchased Clovelly, a 173-acre farm on the Springs Road three miles south of Warrenton, from William E. Matthews. The original house dated back to 1745, and was enlarged in 1780. There was also a racing stable across the field from the house. Originally called “Cedar Grove” or “The Cedars,” the property had been in the Kemper family from 1727 until 1904, at which point it was sold to Sen. John Newlon Camden of West Virginia. It later passed to Sen. Camden’s granddaughter, Mrs. Richard Barrett, nee’ Anne Camden Spilman, 24

Pleased with the work done at Clovelly, “Bunny” Winmill commissioned Mr. Bottomley to design “Dakota,” his new home on the Springs Road. While the Winmills always had horses at Mill Neck, Clovelly and its open fields and large stable offered more opportunities to enjoy their favorite equestrian sports. Bobby had a two-mile racecourse with 20 brush jumps built on Clovelly that was used in the 1928 running of the Virginia Gold Cup. In 1925, Bobby hired John Mason McClanahan (1909-1983), a young man with a special affinity for horses, to break two colts he had acquired.
“John Mason, as he was known, was an intelligent lad with a sense of humor that appealed to Bobby, and he was extremely hard working,” noted Mrs. Armstrong. “Thence started a friendship that would last for over 50 years.” By 1933, John Mason was in charge of the stables, the farm, the cattle and the other properties the family acquired, including nearby Waverley. Like Bobby, John Mason had roots in Fauquier County, but more importantly, they shared many of the same personal attributes: a strong work ethic, outstanding people skills, and boundless loyalty to friends and family. He would spend his entire working life employed by the Winmill family. He brought his new wife, Mary Willette “Billy” McClanahan (19112008) to live in a house at Clovelly, where they raised their sons, G. Everett (1930-2010) and Robert M. “Pooch” McClanahan (b. 1937). More than just an employee, John Mason was on call 24/7. In addition to running the farm, on Fridays he picked up Bobby at Union Station in Washington, D.C. after he had worked all week in New York, and took him back on Sunday night for the return trip. A serious incident in 1941 illustrates how much the Winmills relied on John Mason, and how he always came through. Mrs. Winmill and a friend had taken a train to Southern Pines, N.C. to participate in a riding program. Their four horses were to be brought down in their van, driven by Frank Leach and a helper. After a two-day trip, the van was nearing Southern Pines when Mr. Leach hit a patch of winmills continued on page 26 Warrenton Lifestyle

In order to get them out, the men cut the roof off the van; three horses were badly scraped, and one suffered a head injury that might have cost him an eye. Once freed from the wreck, the fourth horse ran from the scene. Viola was contacted, and upon witnessing the situation, called John Mason from the inn where they were staying. “John, we’ve had an awful accident,” she said, adding that the men were not hurt, but three horses were injured and one missing. “Can you please come down right away? I’ll wait up for you.” John Mason quickly secured a supply of medicine and bandages from their veterinarian, Dr. Robert E. Ferneyhough (1883-1971). Ready to go by late evening, he jumped into a new Ford recently purchased for the farm and set off on the 400-mile trip to
Viola Winmill enjoyed driving her guests to sporting and social events in one of her vintage coaches. But if overloaded, a coach could become top heavy, and overturn. Southern Pines, arriving there at about 2 a.m. They saved the eye of the most seriously injured horse, and treated the other two for scrapes and cuts. At dawn, John Mason and the other men started tracking the lost horse. After following the hoof prints for about three miles, they encountered a man who told them that his friend had found a horse wandering along the road, and was keeping it in his barn. John Mason offered the man $2 to take them to the friend’s barn, where they found the animal, which somehow had escaped injury. Eventually, all of the horses recovered from the accident. Active on the equestrian scene Viola and the children would spend their summers at Clovelly, returning to New York in September to start school. The Warrenton Horse Show, held over Labor Day, marked the end of summer and the whole family would participate in the jumping competitions, as well as the Corinthian Class and Hunt Team events.
Miss Viola Townsend was presented to New York society at two events held in late 1909. 26
The Winmills usually rode their horses from Clovelly to the show, and brought them back to their own stalls for the night. Show officials and outof-town guests were invited to Clovelly for a buffet lunch on the lawn at noon, returning to the show grounds and resuming the competitions by 2 p.m.
Viola had been foxhunting since 1912, and while they were in Virginia, both she and Bobby became involved with the local foxhunting clubs. During their first trip abroad together in 1925, they hunted in France. The following summer, Viola was invited to be a Joint Master of the Warrenton and Casanova Hunts, along with John Chauncey “Jack” Williams. At the same time, her neighbor Baldwin Spilman was made Master of the Draghounds. Later, Mr. Williams resigned as joint master to be the MFH of the Casanova Hunt, and Viola remained as the sole MFH of the Warrenton Hunt. When Warrenton huntsman Hamlin Kirby, resigned in the spring of 1928, John Mason McClanahan was appointed huntsman. Viola’s interest in horses also included her growing collection of horse-drawn carriages, which she would acquire from time-to-time from a number of sources. Her first coach was a four-in-hand given to her by Bobby in 1928. Other examples included her “Gen. Tom Thumb’s Coach,” a small carriage purchased from the Barnum & Bailey Circus and pulled by six Shetland ponies, and a larger Brewster three-quarter scale road coach that she drove for over 30 years. STEPPING
THROUGH THE
MILESTONES by Lynne Richman Bell, Chair
Riveting is my sense of the energy swirling around communities all over our country this time of year. May brings with it graduations, weddings, new jobs, preparations for moves and sympathetic longings for the joy a new life milestone brings. College graduates venture into the realization of their career path, high school graduates make the big move to being “independent thinkers,” business owners are often inspired by their accountants to evaluate their business models and operational habits to increase revenue and possibly consider diversification. Each of these activities requires a certain entrepreneurial and innovative spirit that must be grounded in the known while exploring the unknown. The establishment of the George Mason Enterprise Center here and the efforts of the Fauquier Department of Economic Development have contributed to the awakening of the entrepreneurial spirit. There is always a balance required of the organizational infrastructure that governs operational activity and provide risk management for a business owner. As Michael Berger describes in “The E-Myth,” a great baker that opens a bakery typically knows nothing
about staff management, proper bookkeeping procedure or measuring ROI, but do they know baking. For this reason the baker must engage a business model mentor or consultant to create a business plan, a bookkeeper or accountant, an HR mentor to guide management and hiring practices, and a financial advisor to give guidance in expansion, diversification and measuring ROI. Dream big, but don’t forget to plan! Collegial interaction among business owners through the Fauquier Chamber of Commerce is a great way to learn, be inspired and create success. There are numerous ways to be involved and to meet people. Never underestimate the power of any relationship to grow your business! Every time you add someone to your circle, you are adding the contents of their circle; therefore both circles become a greater realm of the known. The opportunities with the Fauquier Chamber are abundant! “Brown Bag University” is a great place to renew your mind on a variety of topics. The Economic Development/ Legislative Committee is currently reviewing the elements of the county’s comprehensive plan to understand how
its implementation could be prioritized and supported. The Membership Committee is focusing on creating authentic relationships between existing, new and prospective chamber members. Economist Dr. Steven Fuller is the featured speaker at the May 7 Luncheon—an event that is open to the public. The 36th Annual Spring Festival joins numerous volunteers together to showcase the existing Main Street businesses and the many businesses for which a Main Street presence comes only once a year. The Fauquier Young Professionals embody the energy and values representative of the millennial generation and are benefitting each other and the community through education, collaboration, and philanthropy. There is no age requirement—FYPG is for the professional that is “young at heart!” They are simultaneously great learners and teachers. They keep the business “establishment” on its toes. Be bold, prepare and take the first step. Make the most of every opportunity to create and accomplish your personal and professional milestones. Let’s then celebrate our success together!
Lynne Richman Bell is 2014 Chair of the Board of the Fauquier Chamber of Commerce. She has been involved in various economic development initiatives and committees through the years including service on the Warrenton Economic Development Authority, 7 years as President of the Southern Fauquier Business Owners Association, service as member and Chair of the Balanced Growth Alliance, and Charter Chair and Member of the Fauquier County Business Advisory Committee. Lynne is the Business Development Officer for Dominion Construction Group in Warrenton, lives in Sumerduck, VA, and is an avid equestrienne 30

MEET &
greet
Cecil Campbell by George Rowand
CECIL’S TRACTOR SHOP Cecil Campbell’s roots in Fauquier County go back half a century. Despite not being born in the county – his family moved closer to the District so his father could find work – Campbell said he returned to the county as soon as they could. Now his business – Cecil’s Tractor and Truck Repair on Broadview Avenue in Warrenton – is considered an institution in the community. It was a long road and required a lot of hard work to get to that position. “I grew up with nothing,” Campbell said. “We didn’t have our own house or our own car. We lived on the farm, and the house was provided and a vehicle was provided.” Campbell was blessed with athletic ability and ambition. “I played sports, and the only way I could continue to play sports was if I was starting,” he remembered. “Dad said, ‘If you’re not starting, you can come on home and work on the farm,’ so I was motivated in a different way to succeed in my sports. I knew I wasn’t going to get a college education unless I got a scholarship because my family couldn’t afford to send me to school.” He picked up a football scholarship to North Carolina State University where he played under legendary coach, Lou Holtz, and learned life lessons on that campus. “To be successful (in college football) requires you to be disciplined and to work extremely hard,” he said. “It’s a job, and it started usually at 6 o’clock in the morning, and it went to late hours in the evening.” cecil continued on page 34

Even 50 years later, Campbell still smiles when he talks about his experience at NC State. “I enjoyed every minute of my time at NC State. I had significant injuries. I’ve had 36 surgeries. I’ve had four total knee replacements on my right knee, but I get around fine. I had six or seven confirmed concussions, but I’m okay. I was an offensive guard. I loved it. That was back in the day when they ran the ball a lot, and we’d do a lot of trapping, and if I could get a three- or five-yard running start and trap a defensive end or linebacker when he stepped across the line thinking he was going to make a tackle, it was the best feeling in the world.”
COMING HOME
Brothers, Josh and Chris Campbell
His college career over, Campbell returned to Fauquier County to get on with life.
“That’s a blessing,” he said. “I’m really glad to have them here with me.”
“I came back here, married Beckie and started a business,” he said.
“I am blessed with some of the greatest employees that a man could ever ask for. They don’t work for me, they work with me, and it makes the daily grind that much more enjoyable.
The father of two sons, Chris and Josh, Campbell said that he’s been a very involved. “Both played football and baseball in high school and both went to college on partial scholarships in baseball,” he explained. “I coached both of the boys. It was terrific. I tell people all the time, ‘I’ve got a lot of time and money invested in my boys, and I want to spend as much time with them as I can.’” Both sons work for the company that Cecil started 28 years ago.
And work is very fulfilling.
“It’s a different playing field every day, and our goal is to win every day,” he continued, “so having our game plan ready, and exercising our game plan, that’s the fun part of it. We have a whole lot more highs than lows. My glass is never half empty.” Campbell is a member of the Economic Development Authority board at Vint Hill. “We’re trying to get more

businesses down there to increase the tax base of this county,” he stated. He related a perception about the county’ attitude towards business. “There’s this bubble over Fauquier County. It’s there. It’s business friendly for certain things, but it’s not business friendly for everything.” His shop was buzzing with activity the day of the interview. It’s how he likes it, he said. “I love my tractor shop, and we’re not going anywhere. I have my businesses here, and we try to mind our own business and just work hard. I love my businesses. I love coming to work every day. All these headaches are mine, and I love every one of them.” cecil continued on page 36

something back to those boys in my own way.”
He laughed, “Well they aren’t all headaches.”
His hunting and fishing interests have led him to be actively involved in the Outdoor Recreation Heritage Fund.
A lifetime spent in the community, and – judging from the feeling expressed – plenty of years of good, hard work to look forward to, Cecil Campbell considers himself a lucky man.
Is he ready for retirement? “Oh, hell, no! When I retire is when the Good Lord calls me. I’m too busy to retire.”
GIVING BACK
Campbell said that he derives a lot of pleasure for being outdoors. “I like to hunt and fish and be outside. I like to hunt all the wild game. My group prides ourself on being able to hunt and bring it to the table for a great dinner. I like to cast and catch. I go to Florida. I love river fishing, Alaska, I like to fish for lake
“We take veterans hunting and fishing,” he explained. “This is our ninth year. We take them fishing, get them outdoors, do a lot of things with veterans, double amputees, blind guys, burned guys, guys with traumatic brain injuries. “Every one of them want to interact with you,” he continued. “They want to go fishing and hunting with you, but they don’t want you to feel sorry for them. They are amazing kids, and that’s about what they are, kids. I kind of wanted to give
“My roots go very, very very deep in Fauquier County. I like the people, but I also like my privacy, and I get that here. “We’ve always preached to the boys, if you want to play hard, you’ve got to work hard. They go hand-inhand. So when we want to take a hunting trip or play golf or go to the beach, you work hard, put a little money aside and go and then be ready to work when you come back.”

A Family Affair Involving All Members of the Family in a Yard Sale
Spring-time flowers aren’t the only thing popping up this month, big colorful signs are being posted on trees and poles inviting community members to Saturday morning sales. From now until late September Warrenton families will be looking to make a profit from their spring-cleaning efforts by setting up shop on their lawn for yard sales. Traditionally, it’s been a great way for families to collect extra money for their upcoming summer vacations, a renovation project or to put away in savings for a rainy day. With the financial benefit at the top of the list for setting up a yard sale it’s easy to forget that this can be a great way for family members to connect and work together. There are many steps necessary in putting off a successful yard sale and with that comes plenty of opportunities for different family members to get involved - especially your children. We’ve put together a few ways to get your children excited 40
and helping for a successful yard sale.
Get Your Invitation Out There
Recruit your kids to make signs that advertise the upcoming yard sale. While this can be similar to an arts and crafts project remember that this sign should be large, legible and bold. If your kids really want to bring out their creativity go ahead and let them but make sure the sign can be read from the road. Permanent markers are a yard sale go-to but crayons are also a great choice because they don’t run if it rains. Don’t forget to include the date, time, address and an arrow pointing in the right direction toward your house. If you have teenagers that are technologically savvy ask them to place an ad with the local online newspaper, Facebook, Craigslist and other social media sites. The more
people that know about your sale the more opportunities you’ll have to sell.
More Hands Means More Help
It’s almost impossible to have too much help on the day of the sale, so ask your children to each bring a friend. This way each child has a buddy for the day leaving you free to attend to sales, but if needed you’ll have the extra hands to help clean, display, organize, restock and sell items.
Organization is Key
The days leading up to the sale make sure items are properly priced and categorized. It can feel overwhelming at first but with the help of the whole family the process can be relatively quick. Make sure you have enough available space to separate the items by category. Create an assembly line: one person cleans a family affair continued on page 42 Warrenton Lifestyle

the item (child); one person prices the item (adult); and one person places it in the appropriate pile (child with guidance from adult). Larger items with a higher price tag can be listed on Craigslist, Facebook or local online newspapers – another great opportunity for teenagers.
Create a Friendly Environment
The day of the sale bring items out of your house and garage by displaying them on blankets and tables in the yard and on the drive way. It’s safer for you, your children and the customer. Customers will also find the open area much more inviting. Get your teen involved again by putting them in charge of music; ask them to create a yard sale playlist that is friendly for all ages. Music helps break the silence so customers can talk with friends about items and pricing. It also gives them the privacy they need to discuss pricing with you without having to whisper.
It is here that younger children can go into business for themselves. A traditional lemonade stand, a bake/ snack stand as well as a craft stand (those rubber band bracelets are quite popular) would do well. If you aren’t comfortable with them handling money have them hand out free cups of water if the day is quite hot. They will love the adventure and attention they get from working. Keep in mind that this activity will need to be prepped a few days before hand to make sure the kids have the necessary items like pitchers, cups, snacks, snack bags, sodas, water, etc. These are just a few ways to keep your kids active and involved the yard sale. After the last item is packed up and the money is counted take the kids for pizza or ice cream to treat them for all of their hard work. If you have more ideas on how to run a yard sale with kids we’d love to hear about it on Facebook.

ARTS FUSION 2014 What better way to celebrate 50 years of service to the community than by inviting local residents to a big night out and by making a $50,000 pledge to help even more families? That is just what the Mental Health Association of Fauquier County has planned with its Arts Fusion 2014 celebration on May 30 and a $50,000 pledge to the Fauquier Free Clinic to support mental health services for their patients.
Pictured (l to r): Brooksie Wells performing, a sampling of the artwork display and singer, Olivia Caron are just a few examples of the variety of talent displayed at last years event.
Since 1964, the Mental Health Association has been a strong advocate in Fauquier, offering critical supports for local residents funded primarily through community contributions: •
Establishing the first mental health clinic in the county (now the Behavioral Healthcare Clinic operated by Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services)
•
Partnering with Fauquier Schools, providing $190,500 over the past 7 years to fund a part-time Mental Health Specialist to work intensively with at-risk children
•
Providing a Children’s Crisis Fund for to make sure at-risk children get needed psychiatric evaluations
•
Providing housing subsidies for individuals with mental illness
•
Providing Mental Health First Aid training for the community
•
Helping local families find mental health resources in the community
The Association’s Arts Fusion 2014 evening on Friday, May 30 (7:30 pm) at the Inn at Vint Hill is a chance to help the Association meet its pledge to the Free Clinic and to support its on-going work, while at the same time enjoying an intimate, cabaret-style evening of art, music, dance, food 44
and drink. The cabaret will feature talented performers from the Piedmont region, followed by dancing for all to the music of The Blends. The Piedmont Environmental Council’s Doug Larson will emcee the evening, and professional musicians will be joined by some familiar Fauquier faces like Michele Flores and Conway Porter. Local photographers and artists (including Edward Payne and Becky Parrish) will also be featured along with a wide variety of silent auction donors. Tickets are $100 and can be purchased at www. artsfusion2014.org To further support the cause, Salon Emage (341-4052) is hosting a pre-event hair and make-up-a-thon on May 30, with proceeds going to the Mental Health Association. Association President, Pat Balasco Barr, points out that “A community’s supportive attitudes and actions can have a profound impact on the mental health of its citizens. For fifty years, the Mental Health Association has been committed to fostering good mental health for the entire community, and we invite local citizens to help us continue those efforts.” For more information: Contact Sallie Morgan, Executive Director, Mental Health Association of Fauquier County, Phone: 540-341—8732 Email: mhafc1@gmail.com Arts Fusion information and tickets: www.artsfusion2014.org Warrenton Lifestyle

Spring is in the air and before we know it mid-summer will arrive. It’s time to think about your wardrobe options for the office, a fun flirty date or maybe a weekend trip through the countryside for amazing wine tasting.
Your office outfit does not have to be boring as most of us would like to categorize the clothes we wear to the 9-5. Late spring and early summer is the time to wear bold colors, statement jewelry or even a new sexy heel to the office. You don’t necessarily need to purchase an entire new outfit, accessorizing that staple suit, dress or skirt with bright, new, in style pieces will surely get you noticed. For example, if you wear a black or black and white suit regularly, add a bright pop of color under that jacket. Radiant Orchid, one of Pantone’s 2014 colors of the season, can work with many skin tones with undertones of fuchsia and pink, it is a color that will get attention. And look for fabrics that are light weight and even sleeveless. Female Model: Pink Elizabeth McKay silk shirt $172, Christine Fox; Black Yoana skirt $218, Christine Fox; Mustard Escada belt with gold strawberries $59, Deja Vu; Vintage Gold spike earrings $11, Deja Vu; Gold vintage ring $19, Deja Vu. Male Model: Navy Ascot, Huntsman and 2 Hounds $98, Horse Country Saddler; Black Glasses Warby Parker, Warbyparker.com.
The most important thing to remember is to step outside of your comfort zone you’ll be surprised at who is taking note of your fashion decisions. Guys! This includes you. There are so many colorful ties, pattern choices for shirts and stellar colors for vests and suits. Try mixing it up and start turning some heads. warrenton style continued on page 48

warrenton style continued from page 46 My first rule of thumb is, if someone is taking you out on a nice dinner date, your outfit should look more expensive than the meal you are eating. That said, you don’t need to spend a lot of money on an outfit, just make smart choices of what to wear and make sure its dinner time appropriate. This season patterns are really popular, so buy a statement dress and down play the accessories, so that your date night purchase will stand out. The little black dress is always a safe way to go, but save that for a cocktail event where it is more appropriate. So dazzle with your outfit, and maybe wear a bright spring color like orange on your lips. Make this a night to remember for both of you! warrenton style continued on page 50 Female Model: Equestrian inspired stretch Eve Varro dress, $165 Horse Country Saddlery; Crystal Joan Rivers necklace, $26 Deja Vu; Silver and turquoise ring, $19 Deja Vu; Yorkie Puppy Timmy Woods Purse, $79 Deja Vu; Cuff bracelet with horse, $125 Horse Country Saddlery. A wine tasting is a journey itself with many senses awakened while sampling good Virginia wine, dress for the occasion. Step away from your go-to jeans or summer shorts. Instead embrace the outing like it was a garden party in the countryside, think bright colorful sun dresses, flowing shirts, high heel or sparkly sandals. As for the guys, a nice pair of jeans or khaki pants can do the trick if you pair with a cool hat, colorful shirt and a great pair of shoes. You always want to feel comfortable and fashionable when experiencing something new, it really does complete the moment. Take late spring on like you are a fashionista and revamp your wardrobe bit by bit.

Farm to fork
Home Grown
Recent trends have emerged in the health industry emphasizing the importance of going back to the basics and removing overly processed, unnatural foods from our diet. Simply put, we should know where our food comes from – from the farm to our fork. In Virginia, Fauquier has been known for its agriculture; more specifically the dedicated farmers who continue to work the land to grow products and produce that feed our bodies and even nourishs our souls. While traditional farming has almost become a lost art, families here continue to practice the tried and true ways of generations past. Their efforts are welcomed throughout the year as they provide for our community. This series will introduce honest to goodness, real Warrenton farmers. They’ve shared details about their family life, philosophies on farming, products they provide and why they love their job so much. Let’s get to know Henry Fletcher of Crestone Farm and Jesse & Liz Straight of Whiffletree Farm.

HENRY FLETCHER – CRESTONE FARM (540)347-4237 henry@crestonefarm.com
A family firmly planted in Fauquier County, owning and renting roughly 1,600 acres for their farming operations, the Fletchers and Crestone Farm got started with thoroughbred breeding which continued to be successful and the focus for the farm until Henry returned from college. Cattle had been apart of the farm but was a secondary practice when compared to the horses. “I came on at a young age, I was running the farm part of it from the age of 15,” Henry said. Even though Henry left for college, his desire to farm never did. One semester shy of graduating, he left to come home and pursue his dream – cattle farming. “I tried business school and I thought it would broaden my ability to farm. Even when I would go away to school I would come back on the weekend to farm,” he explained. “It was always in my heart.” Steering away from horse breeding, Henry’s interests took him to cattle, hay and crops. He has a cow/calf operation of approximately 400 head with a large portion of them near Fauquier Springs. Crestone Farm runs a forage and grain fed operation, meaning the cattle are able to graze for the majority of their lives and then transition to grain feeding.

Jesse Straight working with chickens. Whiffle Tree Farm “I grain fed toward the end so there is more intense white marbling,” he explained. The white marbling is technically flecks and streaks of fat within the meat that adds flavor to the beef. Henry’s cattle are sold in portions, like in halves, and customers can choose their options for processing. A personalized experience, customers can work with the processing company to choose cuts, leanness and pounds per package for hamburgers. “You can split the half with your neighbors, friends or family,” Henry mentioned. The benefit in purchasing directly from a farmer is quality and peace of mind in knowing where your food came from.

These new-age farmers have worked their roots deep in Warrenton and continue to provide a holistic approach to farming, meet Jesse and Liz Straight of Whiffletree Farm. They practice intensive rotational grazing that allows their animals to grazing in lush areas daily while providing natural fertilizer for the pastures. The constant movement creates an active partnership between the farmers, the animals and the land. “We kind of stuck with staple meats and eggs,” Jesse mentioned. Whiffletree Farm raises chickens, eggs, turkeys, freeforaging pork and grass-finished beef using the method 54
Their network of friends are talented farmers and crafters that bring to Whiffletree items like raw unpasteurized milk; apples as well as apple products like cider and sauce, raw honey, sour dough bread, organically grown herbs, baked goods, tea, kombucha, lip balms and even soap. The items in the store will continuously change with season and availability but its purpose to bring the community together around the table will faithfully remain the same. “I’ve kind of figured out over my life that farming really fits with a holistic family life and community life that is really appealing to me,” Jesse explained. “Farming really integrates ones work, community and home life…you walk out your front door and there is your office.” If you’d like to get in touch with the Straights about Whiffletree Farm or the Farm Store, give them a call, shoot them an email or check out their website. Long-time friends and business owners Roz Eadi and Leslie Farris smile on the porch of Effee’s, their husbands and business partners are Darryl Eadi and Mark Farris.
Effee’s
FROZEN TREATS
A cheerful pop of color catches commuters and passersby while cruising down Route 29 near New Baltimore, Effee’s Frozen Favorites has been a destination as well as a much-needed rest stop when on the road. Long time friends Mike and Leslie Farris and Darryl and Roz Eadi opened the business in the spring of 2003 with a quaint trailer. Now celebrating their eleventh season, Effee’s has a beautiful building with a porch, stools and surrounding picnic tables with umbrellas and benches. Their employees are bubbly, their customers are loyal and, some would argue, the best ice cream around. “I think what makes us special is that we have this country feel,” Leslie mentioned. “People come on the weekends and open their tailgates, kids are chasing fireflies and playing in the creek. We have a backyard quality.” Pair the casual environment of a backyard with creamy, delightful soft-serve ice cream and you’ve got a perfect afternoon. Effee’s carries three traditional flavors of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry as well as one flavor of the week. The flavor of the week varies from fruity, to savory, to decadent. Options like Black Raspberry, Blueberry & Lemon, Butter Pecan, Salted Caramel, Cappuccino and White Chocolate Macadamia Nut are all popular features. “Black Raspberry is number one; it’s always been a favorite,” Mark said.
“ We do our specials of the week based on the flavor of the week like the Raspberry Truffle and that’s to die for!” While four flavors might not sound like an expansive menu, your opportunities for a sweet treat are abundant. For those who enjoy simplicity, cones and cups are the way to go. Get your ice cream topped with a combination of candy bars, peanuts, gummi bears, brownie bites, toasted coconut or nerds. Many more toppings are available like dips and sprinkles to personalize your favorite creation. “We customize a lot for people,” Leslie explained. “We always ask if the customer wants ‘traditional’ or, if they need it customized, we’ll do that for them,” Roz added. Grab a specialty shake like the Marshmallow Crispy Treat, Banana Pudding, S’More or Capt’n Crunch. They offer nineteen sundae choices with classics like Hot Fudge and Hot Caramel – all are topped with whipped cream, nuts and a cherry. Their everpopular Famous Brownie Sundae is a customer favorite as well as the Funnel Cake Sundae. In addition they have an Iceberg which is a half shake and half sundae, an Avalanche with toppings mixed directly into the ice cream, Floats like Root Beer, Coke, Diet Coke and Sprite, and Penguin Pies – Effee’s take on ice cream sandwiches! Effee’s Frozen Favorites is located
The old and new Effee’s at 5051 Lee Highway sandwiched in between Spitony’s Pizza and Northside 29 Restaurant. They are open seven days a week starting Monday through Thursday 11:00am to 9:00pm, Friday and Saturday 11:00am to 10:00pm and Sunday 11:00am to 9:00pm. Find them on Facebook to keep up with the flavor of the week, other tasty creations and fun happenings.

Lifting Your

MARTERELLA WINERY Nestled in the warm hills of Virginia’s Piedmont lies the ever-welcoming Marterella. In rain or shine the winery reaches out with open arms, and the vineyards reflect the weather with a haunting beauty. The landscape itself presents an aura of powerful majesty, crowned by this queen of vines. In stark contrast to the awe-inspiring landscape, the tasting room is small and intimate. You sit in (quite literally) a kitchen, in the heart of the home. Here there is no formal presentation of wine, but a personal and hospitable gift that brings you into the family. The patio outside embraces you like your own backyard- if your own backyard had a glorious view and a brick pizza-oven! One of the few female winemakers in the state, Kate Marterella is a masterful entertainer. She is queen of her castle, but her warm smile and joyous laugh leave you feeling like you’ve visited an old friend. She built this palace with her husband Jerry, and suffered through exceptional hardship to care for the winery after his passing. Having joined Kate in her passion of winemaking in the hardest of times, Kelley brings the motivation, excitement and hours of hard work that only remarkable friendship can. This is the secret to Marterella’s culture of hospitality! For an awe-inspiring tale
Oh the Taste of a Local Wine!
of perseverance and dedication, sit with Kate and talk over a glass of her wine.
Speaking of wine, Kate’s artwork is quite notable in northern Virginia. A collection of thirteen beautiful wines grace her list, each one a source of joy and delight. The five whites will refresh and excite you, beginning with an off-dry Vidal Blanc, sprinting to the Pinot Grigio, a tropical Viognier and two flavorful Chardonnays. A Cabernet Franc Rose surprises you with the scent of cinnamon, the taste of cloves and more subtle spices. As lovely as these wines are, however, they are overshadowed by the glorious reds. The Merlot, while exquisitely light, carries undertones of blackberry jam, vanilla and spices, while the Cabernet Franc brings forth the classic green pepper and vegetable flavor that Virginia does so well. For the truly unconventional, the Sangiovese is imported from Washington State and brings a more floral tone to the grape that once made Italy the center of the world. The crowning glory, however, is the Meritage with a deep earthy nose and ripened dark fruits on the palate, it is truly a Virginia masterpiece. The family wines finish off with three sweeter varieties. The ‘Sweet Nothings’ Chambourcin begs to be paired with dark chocolate, while the ‘Grace’ blend
of Riesling and Vidal Blanc carries the refreshing flavor of pears. The Port-styled Dessert Wine has been fortified with Brandy and is loaded with dark cherries, chocolate and tobacco. When you visit, do not pass up on the truly unique wineslushies! With an icy blend of Vidal Blanc and peach bellini or a Pinot GrigioCosmo-Rita, there can be nothing more pleasant on a hot day. All in all, the wines are as exceptional as the winemaker- a true adage for life. There is no food worth eating that cannot find a good pairing with wine made by the lovely Kate Marterella, and there are few places that epitomise the meaning of hospitality as well as Marterella Winery.
