Fauquier Family Shelter The Haven by Lily Rose Residential districts, acres of property, local apartments and townhouses, assisted living facilities and family shelters help build Warrenton into a
tight-knit munificent community. The aid shared throughout the community is well established at The Fauquier Family Shelter. The shelter, also known as The Haven, which includes
administrative offices, is located in Old Town near the Sheriff’s Station. In conjunction with The Haven, additional transitional housing branches off of the Fauquier Family Shelter and is situated in Vint Hill. Recently, The Haven underwent expansion, originally housing up to 26 residents, now almost doubled to 52 at capacity. The occupancy at The Haven has been at a steady and fairly high average with 36 inhabitants. November marks the beginning of the season’s holidays and The Haven puts forth effort in being festive. Support from the community is a substantial and constant acquisition, especially with Thanksgiving in mind. The holiday spirit is set in motion as community generosity increases. (The Haven cont’d from page 3) the shelter see the true benevolence in the town during this time of year. “We usually get such a big community response,” said Administrative Assistant Diane Blair. “People around the holidays start to contact us and we have plenty of assistance around Thanksgiving and Christmas time.” Every year families donate food or provide a special dinner, and schools are known for setting up food drives. In the past, schools, such as Highland, provide dinners and companies donate goods. Employees of Airlie’s Conference Center have donated their own turkeys, as well. Individuals will also provide baskets for festivities during the holidays. Aside from food and dinners, people find alternative ways of participating. “During the holidays we get a lot of assistance for families staying here,” Blair said. “Very often, pretty much every year, people will adopt families at the shelter.” The residents of The Haven are appreciative of the support they receive. Resources are always available for the families that live at the shelter, though the organization tries hard not to interfere, allowing the residents to empower themselves by independently searching for jobs and homes. With the new additions, the shelter is adequately housed. Among the administrative offices is a conference room and interview room. As a part of the residence, there are two spacious sitting rooms; one, equipped with toys,
is directed more towards children. The lower level also consists of a kitchen with a pantry full of donated and provided goods, where the food is designated to the residents and the countertops disappear under the vast amount of donated groceries. Adjacent to the kitchen is a dining room and down the hall are the handicap accessible bedroom, toilet and laundry room. The top level accommodates the families with sleeping quarters. The community of Warrenton through its unending care displays effort dynamically. The Haven seldom finds itself lacking necessities due to its proactive town. “This year we are anticipating having a holiday party for our residents and for the residents of the Vint Hill Transitional Housing,” Blair said. The festivities for the holidays help to make the residents “feel a little better about their circumstances.” The involvement with charity is always appreciated and the shelter has a high interest in volunteers. By visiting www. fauquierfamilyshelter.org or calling the shelter at (540) 341-0900, one can get a start or a guideline to contributing to Warrenton’s well being. Lily Rose is Copy Production Manager of The Falconer newspaper at Fauquier High school, where she will be a senior this fall. As a patron of art and music, she looks forward to pursuing her interests in college. This will be Lily’s 16th year as a resident of Warrenton.

Best Kept Secrets
Warrenton’s Other Library by Emma Smith arrenton is home to an amazing Public Library in the Town of Warrenton on Winchester Street and Alexandria Pike. Our Public Library is on two levels and features public computers and The Virginia Room in which you can find some incredible books that focus on Virginia history. But did you know that Warrenton also houses an academic library that is open to the public? Nestled inside the Lord Fairfax Community College is the Bob G. Sowder Library. Although this is an academic library for LFCC students, it is also open for community use. The library brochure reads, “We are an academic library open to the residents of Clarke, Fauquier, Frederick, Page, Rappahannock, Shenandoah and Warren counties, and the city of Winchester.” The friendly staff is helpful and always has a smile to share. To get a library card all one has to do is go to the LFCC library, fill out an application and show a valid ID (drivers license). Once registered, your card never expires. The LFCC library
W
differs from the public library because its collection is geared to LFCC students and the literature and video tapes they need for classes. The Sowder Library also uses the Library of Congress Cataloging System to organize books. This means that books are logically placed on the shelves, in groups separated by subjects. The public library in Town uses the Dewey decimal system. Hours for the LFCC library vary with the school terms. When classes are in session the library is open from 8 am to 9 pm Monday – Thursday. Friday it’s open 9 am – 4:30 pm and Saturday from 9 am – 1 pm. Hours are shorter in the summer (See Library on page 16)

Living the Warrenton Lifestyle
M
by Tony Tedeschi
ost of us have, at some point, either decided to move to Warrenton or chose to remain living here. The most popular reason given, “Quality of life.” We relish “living in the Country” or “having the small town atmosphere” or “the clean, safe neighborhoods.” Making the most out of our community is the focus of our publication, and we want all of you to make the most out of living the Warrenton lifestyle. So here are a few suggestions: 1) Attend a high school sporting event. Pure amateur sports are exciting and a bargain! Consider watching a football or basketball double header with food and drinks for less than $10. For real excitement, pack into the gym during a contest between rivals the Fauquier Falcons and Liberty Eagles. 2) Join a club. Warrenton and Fauquier are chock full of organizations and there is at least one for everyone. Consider the Jaycees, the Fauquier Business & Professional Women, the Warrenton Singles, the Mom’s Club, the Warrenton Newcomer’s Club or the Optimist Club, or the many others. Most clubs, whether or not they have an altruistic mission, are great social places.
3) Attend a Town Council Meeting or Board of Supervisors Meeting. Our elected officials make decisions every month and these choices can affect your pocketbook and your quality of life. Attend a local government meeting and get an up close view of real, local politics in action. The amount of work our “part-time” elected officials have to tackle every month is astonishing. At each meeting, you’ll appreciate Citizens’ Time where everyone has an opportunity to voice his/her opinion. The Town Council meets on the second Tuesday of the month and the Board of Supervisors meet the second Thursday of each month. Check their websites for times and agendas: www.townofwarrenton.com and www.fauquiercounty.gov 4) Volunteer to make a difference. Warrenton is full of dozens of volunteering opportunities and one thing I love about this area is that each of us can make a noticeable difference. Some projects require an extended commitment and others are only a one day affair. You can volunteer with organizations that make a difference in people’s health and well-being, those that take care of our environment,
groups that put on local events or clubs that help develop our children. We’ve got clinics, shelters, senior groups, roadside cleanups, sports teams, and social events that all could use more help. There is a rewarding experience right here in your hometown that will fit your busy schedule. Go ahead, make a difference! 5) Attend an equestrian event. Our area is known for its horse and pony shows, steeplechase events and foxhunting clubs. Enjoy the great outdoors, watch the majestic animals and skilled riders perform and meet a brand new crowd of people. Local favorite events include the Warrenton Horse Show, Casanova Hunt, Warrenton Hunt, and the Virginia Gold Cup. Riding lessons are available all over the County for those of you that think they may have discovered a new hobby. To get a taste of how the other side lives, visit Horse Country in downtown Warrenton. They have the best of everything for the horse enthusiast including a great equine publication. 6) Read our local newspapers. This is a must for anyone who pays taxes, has children or has an interest in maintaining or improving our (See Warrenton on page 13)

Warrenton Lifestyle
(Warrenton cont’d from page 11) local lifestyle. The Fauquier TimesDemocrat has been a staple of this area for 100 years. This weekly newspaper is published on Wednesdays and follows a more traditional newspaper format. The Fauquier Citizen is a Thursday weekly printed in a tabloid format that usually has a different approach to its stories than its counterpart. Both papers tout owners, editors and managers that have been embedded in the community for decades. Both of these papers feature award-winning journalists and spectacular photography. If you want to know what’s going on in Warrenton, get both. The differing and extended viewpoints of our local newspapers will keep you thoroughly informed. And, as far as bargains are concerned, you can have both for a buck a week. 7) Attend a local arts performance. Warrenton has plenty of entertainment going for it. Expand your horizons and consider a play or musical at the Fauquier Community Theater, a show at one of the local schools put on by our students, a performance by the highly talented Piedmont Regional Orchestra or one of the cultural experiences presented by the Highland Center for the Arts. Bluemont Concert Series puts out a great summer season each year on Culpeper Street featuring a wide variety of musical performances. There are also many talented local musicians and singers performing at our local restaurants and bars. If you haven’t yet
heard Elizabeth Lawrence sing, you don’t know what you’re missing. Consider what a wonderful evening you could have – dinner at a local restaurant followed by a show at an area theater. Little driving, less rushing and you’re home at a decent hour. 8) Watch a local parade or festival. Warrenton is a parading Town. Last month was the annual Homecoming Parade for Fauquier High School and next month is the annual Christmas Parade. The July 4th Children’s Parade is another favorite. They’re good, oldfashioned, family fun. The Old Town Warrenton Spring Festival has been going on for decades on Main Street the third Saturday in May. Mark your calendars now so you won’t miss the hundreds of vendors and street performers plus you’ll want to get in line early for the grilled sausage or a funnel cake. 9) Visit our museums and historic sights. You’ve got to start at the Visitor’s Center located on Calhoun Street one block north of Main Street behind the Mosby Museum, once home to legendary “Gray Ghost”, Colonel John Singleton Mosby. Get a walking guide, book or load yourself with local brochures. Check to see what you can currently visit of the museum or its grounds as it is still undergoing restoration. We abound in historic buildings and houses. Some homes are open during the Garden Tours. Check the newspapers for upcoming events. The Old Gaol (Jail) Museum is a must-see for anyone visiting Warrenton.
It is one of the best preserved old jails in Virginia that dates back to 1808. 10) Spend a day in Historic, Old Town Warrenton. Our historic district truly sets us apart from other Towns in Virginia. We’ve got great gift shops, mouth-watering eateries, antique stores, jewelers, a terrific pharmacy, florists, hair salons, the Farmer’s Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, a remarkable gallery, museums, and a tourism office. We like to start our day with a cup of java at the Earthly Paradise. Old Town (as it’s locally referred to) is such a wonderful, eclectic mix of establishments that we guarantee it has something for everyone.
Where In Warrenton? Where in Warrenton was this photo taken? We will occasionally publish a portion of a photo of some person, place or thing uniquely Warrenton. Those that correctly identify the photo will be put into a drawing with the winner receiving a check for $25.00. November 2005
