riving up to the Warrenton Aquatic and Recreation Center (WARF), it’s easy to forget that you’re actually in Warrenton. It started simply enough remembers Warrenton Mayor George Fitch. “Back eight or nine years ago, when I was first in office, the people at FAST Aquatics said, ‘We really could use a better pool around here.’ They wanted to know if there was anything I could do to help get it going,” he recalls. Today, that seed of suggestion is now an impressive stateof-the-art $27 million facility located right in Warrenton. Developing such an enormous facility was an evolving, developing process. “One of the first things I

started thinking about was an indoor pool with maybe 8 or 10 lanes. How it went from there to a 65 acre park, I’m not sure,” laughs Fitch. At that time, Fitch says he was promoting a quality of life for Warrenton, trying to bring in some smart growth principles to better manage the tsunami of development that was headed our way. He recalls, “We were next after Charlottesville and Manassas. I felt that a facility like this would encourage healthy living for a better quality of life. People could go swim, walk around the track, exercise. I really wanted a center to provide that kind of environment.” Says Mayor Fitch, “I doubt there’s another community our size, even triple our size, that has a facility like this.
We’re very proud to be able to offer to our citizens something of this scope. We’re also proud of the fact that we can do this without burdening successive governments.” Fitch recounts when his wife said to him, “You keep on bragging about how you’ve cut spending and the town is going to be generating surpluses. Use the surpluses to give back to the people. Give them what they want.” With that edict, he began to move forward with the help of the Warrenton Town Council. They set out with a big mission - to build a facility that provides activities for everyone from 5 to 95. Because Fitch was determined not to saddle future administrations with a huge debt payment to cover the facility’s construction costs, he wanted to try to cash finance as much as possible. “The Town of Warrenton was continuing to run substantial surpluses because we run a very tight ship. We keep our expenditures down and avoid unnecessary programs. We can’t cut taxes any lower. We’re down from 18 cents to a penny and a half. We’ve totally eliminated personal property tax. All residents are paying is about $65 a year in real estate tax. You can’t See WARF pg 8

Rather than reduce the tax rate from 1.5 to zero, I said let’s use the surpluses to cash finance something like this.” Once the project was approved, the town established two conflicting objectives: to break even to avoid government subsidizing any shortfalls and to make it affordable. Similar centers in Manassas and Leesburg are double the cost for a family of four and suffer from overcrowding. Fitch is proud of the rates established for town residents. “We’ve started out now and I believe it’s affordable for Warrentonians. Compared to what it costs for a gym membership, folks can get a lot more here. What I want to do now is adjust the rates for Fauquier County residents. We fell asleep at the wheel and let the Fauquier County rates be the same as out of county. I take responsibility for that. We’re part of Fauquier County, and we want to bring as many county residents in as possible. I certainly don’t want them to pay as much as someone from Prince William or Culpeper.” Looking at the many amenities, Fitch’s pride in the facility is evident. “We’ve got the splash and giggles pool on one side, and a very nice whirlpool and hot tub to get that jet spray on aching bones. Then there is the competition pool with 11 lanes. We even have an area dedicated to water aerobics. Any doctor will tell you that swimming is the best form of exercise with the least impact on your joints. That’s why I swim. I’ve tried a lot of different exercise, but swimming is best for me, especially at my age.”

An apple a day may keep the doctor away but so will a little e xercise & the WARF gives you all you need to get it done. Newcomers to the facility ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ when they come through the doors, genuinely in awe of the scope of the facility. Mayor Fitch has seen many of these reactions first hand, “I came in here with my wife and we watched this six year old boy come in for the first time. His eyes looked like he was in the toy store. You could tell he didn’t know

where to start first. He settled on the waterslide, and we could see him stand on his tiptoes to make sure he was tall enough. Then, instead of making sure he had good footing, he jumped and rushed down. I think we counted 10 trips in a row for this little boy. It’s wonderful to see the joy in kids, but seeing the seniors use it has been rewarding as well. We
have achieved a facility that provides something for all age groups.” The fun doesn’t stop at the pools. A well-equipped exercise room with treadmills, bikes and elliptical machines is bright and inviting. The weight machines and five plasma televisions See WARF pg 10

WARF continued from page 9 round out the spacious workout area. Starting this month, exercise classes are being offered in the adjacent classroom. Organized through Fauquier Health System, the classes are designed to meet a wide variety of interests and fitness levels. Drive by the WARF on the weekend and you’re likely to see hundreds enjoying the benefits of the athletic fields. Fitch is very complimentary of the work done by the Warrenton Fields Association to put in state of the art playing fields. He continues, “The fields are better than RFK stadium. I’m sure DC United would rather play here! Plans are also in motion for another field for the Warrenton Rugby Association’s home field. Then we’ll work on our lake feature for a scenic picnic area.” Skateboard enthusiasts also have a space of their own to hone their skills at the designated skateboard park, and runners and walkers can enjoy the outdoor track. Phase two of the WARF will include a basketball court with an upper indoor track, in addition to a separate pool strictly for seniors and adults. Fitch says he’d like to see the Council start on it after the WARF membership is near capacity. “We need to make this self-sustaining so we don’t have to worry about it. Hopefully in two
years time we’ll get to our goal of 2,800 memberships. But we’ll always be open to adding activities. It’ll be a very comprehensive facility. It goes back to doing something for people from 5 to 95. That was the desire. Not just for a special interest group or particular age group, but where everybody from all walks of life, all income levels, by themselves or with their families, can enjoy themselves and get healthy at the same time.” See WARF pg 12

After reflecting on the success of the WARF, Mayor Fitch is already looking forward to his next goal - making Warrenton the world’s first town to go green. And with that, he’s off for a swim.

Finesse and a Family Feast By Jennifer Heyns
W
hen it comes to the winter holidays, it’s all about the food. Thanksgiving is a harvest festival, steeped in tradition going back hundreds of years to the early American settlers who feasted with the natives responsible for their gardening successes. Christmas, Chanukah and Kwanza, although not derived from culinary feats, have become holidays with their own traditional flavors. For all of the hustle and bustle at year’s end, everyone is thankful for a large meal shared with loved ones. This is no small undertaking for the host or hostess who longs to serve the perfect meal upon a breathtaking table and enjoy the fabulous company simultaneously. “Food should be the least concerning part of the holidays,” advises Angela Smith, Manager of Legends Catering. “It’s the simplest aspect of the gathering. The holidays are really more about entertaining and being with people you care about.” You don’t have to 16
enslave yourself to the kitchen in order to provide a lovely and tasty meal. “It used to be a sign of love to cook for your family but now people are just happy that you’ve invited them over for a meal. It doesn’t matter where the food comes from.” Smith advises that an interesting choice is to plan your feastial gathering for after the holidays, when people are more relaxed and there’s less running around to do. “Instead of adding stress to your holidays, plan a post-holiday celebration about three weeks into January.” This works especially well because people are more relaxed after the holidays, they’ve given up on their post-holiday diets and they don’t have any other upcoming celebrations to look forward to. When planning your party, being organized is key according to Fabrice Read, Restaurant Manager of Napoleons. Make a list of the menu you want to serve, the décor you want to have, the guests you plan to invite and any other items you will need to prepare your holiday gathering. Pay particular
attention to cleanliness, lighting and ambience. Smith suggests dividing your list into three separate components: things you already have, things you will need to buy and things you can borrow (perhaps Aunt Agnes has the most beautiful soup tureen or Grandma can lend her famous pie recipe). When planning your menu, Sherry Hume, Catering Manager for Kidwell Caterers, suggests selecting dishes that “give you the most bang for your buck. Pick recipes that are easy to prepare, can be made ahead of time and reheat well, and that are pretty and tasty. Use tried and true recipes that you know will please your guests.” The next step is delegation. Don’t try to do everything yourself—it will cause undue stress and pressure. “When guests ask, ‘What can I bring?’ take them up on their offer,” recommends Renée Yount, Owner of Renée’s Gourmet To Go. Feast continued from page 16 decorating before the party or even by greeting other guests and taking coats or serving drinks and appetizers at the party while you finish in the kitchen. Not only will this be a great help and relief to you, it will make your guests feel essential to the success of the gathering. Another way to delegate is to order all or a portion of the meal. “It’s okay to outsource the food and still be proud of what you’ve accomplished,” says Smith. “Today we outsource everything else and are considered resourceful and successful. Why not for the holidays, too?” Tana Jackson and Marylin Eggleston, Co-Owners of Tana’s Kitchen, agree. “Let us help you save time during the holidays by doing your shopping and preparing for you.” Several of Warrenton’s finest restaurants and catering services have delectable dishes that your guests will enjoy and that can save you precious time and sanity. Yount touts her “famous she-crab soup,” Smith lauds Legends’ Cajun shrimp skewers, Hume hums the praises of her cranberry relish, Read recommends his rack of lamb with rosemary au jus and Jackson rejoices in her Heavenly Pineapple Cake and Champagne salad. There’s no need to hide the boxes either. According to Smith, you’ll be surprised how at ease your guests will be about your decision to outsource the food. It shows that you want 18
them to have an enjoyable meal and still have plenty of time to spend with them. Secretly they will be relieved because you have now given them permission to do the same thing for their future parties. Give yourself as much time as possible to prepare by shopping and borrowing what you need as early as you can. One of the most stressful aspects of the holidays, aside from the feeding frenzy you’ve agreed to host, is the cluster of traffic and shoppers that always seem to be in your way when you leave the house. “I like to go to a store that has everything instead of driving all over looking for various specialty shops,” says Yount. Once you’ve gathered all of the essentials for your party, spend as much time as possible preparing the house and meal in advance. Think beyond the box—you’ll be surprised at what you already have in your house.” Read advocates cleaning the fireplace and making it a focal point by decorating the mantel or surrounding floor and having a nice fire the day of the gathering. He also suggests marinating your meats ahead of time so that the flavor is richer after cooking. Do anything that will keep well ahead of time—chopping, assembling, and even cooking—so that the day of the feast you will have more time to relax and enjoy your company. Make sure your kitchen is equipped with everything you need for easy meal preparation. A good sharp set of knives is essential. Yount also recommends November 2007
having a food processor and Read suggests a nice seasonal mix of dried herbs that can be added to nearly every dish for enhanced flavor. Most agree that a bit of wine for the cook is also in order. Of course, you don’t want to
get snockered while cooking or waiting for guests to arrive, but a glass of wine can help ease tension and make things a little easier to handle. Smith, who is keen on organization and adept at making sure her events run
smoothly, always takes a mock walkthrough of her own parties. You can do this a day or so before your event. She advises you leave the house and come back as if you were a guest to see what others will see. This is your chance to make sure all of the little details are in place – is there a place for coats, does the ice bucket have tongs, are there coasters on the furniture and napkins on the table, are the CDs ready to play? Determine what works and what doesn’t and fix anything you may have missed in the planning stages. “Try to be flexible and always have a Plan B,” cautions Smith. Never expect perfection in your plan. Something is bound to go a bit off-course but don’t let it rattle you. Be prepared to roll with the punches and know that everyone will still have a pleasant time even if the appetizers don’t have toothpicks right away. (Now might be a good time for that glass of wine!) Take some time for yourself—walk around the yard or neighborhood and gather some of nature’s gifts for a great centerpiece. “I love to use things from outside for fall décor,” says Yount. “Simple things you can find in your own backyard such as fall leaves, acorns, berries and chrysanthemums are full of earthy colors,” adds Eggleston. When your guests arrive, make sure you get out of the kitchen and enjoy the party with them. They may have been invited to share a meal, but they came for the company. Lake Manassas
E
very day they stream in and out of the Cancer Center at Lake Manassas. Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, friends, coworkers. And they all have one unfortunate thing in common — cancer. That six letter word with the four letter feel can cause physical and emotional upheaval in individuals and their families. However, with the conveniently located Cancer Center at Lake Manassas, their care has become more sophisticated and a whole lot closer. The Center is a joint venture between Fauquier Health System and Prince William Health System, and has been open since Valentine’s Day. Dr. Sanjeev Aggarwal’s previous experience with Georgetown Hospital’s Lombardi Cancer Center prepared him well for his position as the center’s chief radiation oncologist. He cites the combination of cutting edge medical equipment, highly trained staff, and individualized care for patients as the ingredients behind their success. The patients are noticing. In the midst of a difficult time for them, the care they receive at the Cancer Center at Lake Manassas stands apart. Says one patient, “All of the employees at the Center really are exceptional. They

made me feel like their only patient. I can’t compliment them enough.” Peter Dritschilo, the facility’s director, is proud of the technology available to their patients. “We have more equipment than many of the facilities in the area with some of the most updated technologies around.” He points to the center’s Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT). These two new technologies allow them to be much more accurate and aggressive with patients’ radiation treatments.
Adds Dr. Aggarwal, “Developing personal relationships is helpful for the patient’s continuity of care as well. We work with patients and physicians to make sure everyone is part of the decision making process so their care is coordinated. I’m really pleased with the environment we’ve created for our patients. It’s friendly and open, and we’ve made education an integral part of treatment. No one is rushed through an appointment here.”

T
he year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. 6 Steps to turn your yard into a sanctuary for birds
1. Put out the welcome mat! Habitat loss is the biggest challenge facing birds. You can help by making your neighborhood more attractive to birds by landscaping with native plants that provide natural food sources, shelter from the elements and predators, and nesting sites. Providing feeders, nest boxes and water also benefits birds. To learn how, stop by your local wild bird shop, garden retailer or wildlife feed store. 2. Prepare a proper menu. Providing the appropriate foods year round will attract more birds to your yard and help ensure that they have a safe and nutritious diet. Moving feeders periodically helps prevent the buildup of waste on the ground. Keep seed and foods dry; discard food that smells musty, is wet or looks moldy. Hummingbird feeders should be cleaned every three to five days, or every other day in warm weather. It’s good hygiene to wash your hands after filling or cleaning feeders.

4. Birds and chemicals don’t mix. Many pesticides, herbicides and fungicides are toxic to birds; avoid using these near areas where birds feed, bathe or rest. Always follow directions provided by chemical manufacturers. For additional information visit your garden retailer. 5. Keep cats away from birds. Scientists estimate that cats probably kill hundreds of millions of birds each year in the U.S. This is a big problem, but it’s easy to fix. Many people who enjoy feeding birds also love cats. The best solution is to keep
cats indoors. They will lead longer, healthier lives, and your yard will be safer for birds. Install feeders in areas not readily accessible to cats or install fences or other barriers to help keep stray cats from feeder areas. Collar bells, de-clawing and keeping cats well fed will not solve the problem. 6. Reduce window collisions. Collisions with glass windows kill millions of wild birds every year. Depending on their size and location, some windows reflect the sky or vegetation, and birds are fooled into thinking they can fly through them. To eliminate this problem identify windows that cause collisions (typically larger, reflective windows, those near the ground, or those that “look through” the house). Attaching decorative decals or other decorations to the outside surface of the glass can reduce

reflections. Feeder birds fleeing predators are vulnerable to window collisions. If this is happening at your house, consider moving feeders within three feet of the windows so that birds cannot accelerate to injury level speeds while flying away.
