“In the construction industry we often refer to the build process as a rollercoaster ride. There are a lot of hills and valleys throughout a project’s life cycle. A good relationship with your contractor is the key to a successful project, and will guarantee that you are smiling when you get off the ride.” Tim Burch, CR President, Burch Builders Group President, National Association of the Remodeling Industry, METRO DC Chapter, 2008

The dominating issue this November is obviously this month’s elections. It is difďŹ cult not to have an opinion about the candidates and it befuddles me to imagine that anyone will stay home and not cast their ballot. The democratic process in America is something we must participate in; we owe generation after generation that defended it. Please vote Tuesday, November 4th. Our town is buzzing with energy and excitement over the two leading candidates and what we perceive they represent. Not all of that energy is positive and the resulting combativeness is disturbing. While most of my friends are probably voting differently than I, there hasn’t been any anger displayed by any of them towards myself or my family. Why is it happening between strangers? I compare most of our friends as having very similar family values, in the manner we raise our children and in how we relish our home life. In business, we strive for like goals, especially caring about the merchants in the community we live. We volunteer for the same organizations, giving both our time and hard-earned money to local charities. Our paths cross weekly in the same social events, with our spouses, or out with our entire families. We care about our environment and strive to keep our community clean. In short, there is very little that truly separates us. Debating the issues and how we arrive at solutions is an exhilarating part of the election cycle. Let’s keep it civil and leave ‘hate’ as part of history. Today, we are Democrats, Republicans and Independents. Obamanians, McCainites and RonPaulians. Progressives, Conservatives and Centrists. On November 5th, once we take off the buttons and remove the signs, we can all go back to being Warrentonians. I’m urging you to take the intense energy that you channeled into your candidate and turn that focus to our local economy. The situation here is troubled, like it is in the rest of America. The beauty in our plight is that we are small enough that we can make an impact here, each and every one of us. The dynamics of the townspeople of Warrenton are signiďŹ cant when we come together to work for a common cause. This November and December, I am urging all of our readers to consider doing all of their holiday shopping in Warrenton and Fauquier County. The signiďŹ cance of this would bring tens of millions of dollars of additional revenue to our merchants. The ripple effect will be dramatic. Our local economy would surge, our tax coffers would be satisďŹ ed, jobs may not only be saved but expanded, local credit would ease and bankruptcies prevented. I am not suggesting you spend more this holiday season. Make a budget. Stick with it. But do your best to spend every nickel you can with a neighborly, tax-paying, local merchant. I promise you will have a good time overall, enjoying personal service, reveling in the Warrenton holiday spirit and discovering our bevy of ďŹ ne dining establishments during the day. Plus, you can enjoy the entertainment that ourishes during the holidays. Check the papers, look at the signs in the stores or just ask a friend. On a ďŹ nal note, I want to express my sincere gratitude to the recently departed John Edison Williams for sharing his life with us. John was a humble man who demonstrated incredible leadership by his actions. He always made you smile and, after spending time with him, you left feeling a little better about yourself and the world. Having the privilege of working with John over the past 20 years with matters pertaining to his church, on the Town Economic Development Committee, with public school issues and in community action taught me great lessons. Each of us is proud to have been part of his “team.â€? And, after reading Don del Rosso’s terriďŹ c article in the Fauquier Weekend paper several months ago regarding John’s contributions to desegregation, I fell to complete awe. If you didn’t read it, you can ďŹ nd it online here: http://www.fauquier.com/news/2008/feb/16/pushing-taboo/ In his spirit, this holiday season, I urge all of you to join “team Williamsâ€? by accepting our diversity as people and on issues, treating each other with respect, supporting a community organization and patronizing our local stores. John Williams loved Warrenton and gave everything he had to making it better. We now have a chance to show him our appreciation. Enjoy! Kind regards,

The Love of a Hound… Friend, Playmate & Hunter by Geroge Rowand
L
incoln is one of those stand-up kind of guys. Retired now, he still lives by the creed that is as old as the republic: “early to bed, early to rise ...” Of course, he has been known to take a nap or three in the middle of the day. He just climbs onto the couch, puts his legs up and dozes off. And what do you suppose is the subject matter of Lincoln’s dreaming? It’s a guess, but it’s probably better than even money that, like a lot of old guy’s dreams, he’s probably dreaming about the ones that got away. You know, those devilishly attractive foxes that Lincoln pursued for the better part of his life, foxes that focus his slumbering brain activity ... foxes, foxes, foxes. Did I mention that Lincoln is a foxhound? Guess not, and more specifically, he’s an American Foxhound, a descendant of a pack of English Foxhounds and some French Foxhounds given to George Washington by the Marquis de Lafayette.
8
Washington, when he wasn’t winning the Revolutionary War and becoming the Founder of the Nation, loved to spend his time on horseback in pursuit of the elusive fox ... just like a lot of people in this area still do today. But Lincoln is what one could call a foxhound emeritus. He put in his time, loved his job while he had it, didn’t want to quit, but now he’s retired to a life of ease and affection. His owner, Kay Blassic of Casanova, sees to that. “Lincoln is nine, but for the first eight years of his life, he [fox] hunted,” Blassic explained. “I liked him when I saw him in the field, and I badgered Tommy Lee Jones to let me have him when he retired, and he gave him to me.” Blassic is a former Master of Foxhounds for Casanova Hunt, and Tommy Lee Jones is the wellknown Hunstman for Casanova, whose hunting territory surrounds Warrenton to the east and south. Blassic said that Lincoln is not the first retired fox hound that she has taken out of the fields. “I’ve had other foxhounds that
have retired,” she said, “and you have to realize that it’s a tremendous shock for them to leave the kennel. That’s the only life they’ve known, and all at once, everything is different. The toughest thing that they have to adjust to is stairs. [In the beginning] they’re terrified of stairs. They’ve never seen them before.” Period of adjustment Foxhounds are hunting animals, so, considering the fact that they are bred to chase other animals, are they highstrung and unable to become “good” dogs when they’re not doing what they are bred to do? “Our foxhounds are walked from the kennel every Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the off season,” said Joyce Fendley, a Master for Casanova. “We have children come out and walk with us, and they have a great time with the hounds, and especially Hounds Continued on Page 10

with the puppies. Foxhounds are very sweet, very loving dogs.” Blassic said that when she got Lincoln home, they had a little test of wills in the beginning. Their issues have been resolved. “He came in and immediately went over and lay on the couch,” she recalled. “I got him off. He got back on. We went through this a few times, and then he got off the couch and got into my chair, and I gave up. ‘Okay, you can have the couch, but you have to stay out of my chair.’ And there’s a fan over the couch, so he gets on the couch, lays on his back and watches the fan. He likes that a lot. Sleeps there like that, with his feet in the air.” The breed “Foxhounds are bred for nose and voice,” said Gerald Keal, Huntsman for Old Dominion Hunt, which hunts north and west of Warrenton. “If you get something nice out of a mating, you will probably show it, but they’re bred for nose and voice. Around here, it’s 75 percent woodland, so you’ve got to have that voice. And it’s hilly, so they’ve got to have a good voice. Otherwise they are over the hill and gone, and you may never catch them. “When they’re working, you can see which ones are working, and which ones are at the edge of the pack,” Keal continued. “By the end of the second
or third season, you know which ones are good for breeding.” Keal said that he had been hunting since he was a lad in England. “I’ve been doing this since 1966,” he explained. “I’ve hunted all my life. I used to skip school to go hunting.” Tommy Lee Jones can relate. “My first season hunting was 1970,” he said. “I started foxhunting when I was nine, and I hunt three days a week during the season.” Considering the fact that foxhounds are working dogs, is there still a bond of affection between huntsmen and hounds, or is it strictly a professional relationship? “You have to have affection for them,” Jones said. “You ask them to do a lot of things, and if they don’t like you, they wouldn’t do it. They’re all individuals. They all have their own personalities. “They love their work,” Jones continued. “When you leave some in the kennel and take out the rest, the ones left behind all scream to get out and go with you. They’re the happiest dogs you’ve ever seen, and they want to please you.” Working dogs or not, Fendley said that members of the hunt pay attention to what the hounds are doing. “You’d be surprised at how many Hounds Continued on Page 12

hunt members know each and every hound by name, she said. A hunt may go out with 15 or more hounds at a time. Keal told the story about how Old Dominion Hunt went back to England to claim something that had been lost. “There was a bitch named Old Dominion Gorgeous, he said, “and she was very, very good. She was taken to England about 40 years ago where she was very successful, and her line had been bred out in the Old Dominion Hunt. We went over there and got two English bitches with her blood, and now we’ve bred two generations from them. By the time we’ve bred four generations, they will be pure American Foxhounds again. Jones said that he is responsible for arranging all the matings that produce the hounds for Casanova. “You look for them to be like a racehorse, in that they have to be balanced, he said. “They have to have the conformation. You want a uniform pack of hounds. We’re not breeding to find the fastest hounds. You want them to all be close in speed, otherwise they will get all strung out. When a pack is running, there are five or six hounds across the [front] line, and the pack drifts across and one hound has the line, and then another. You need them to run at the same speed. Keal said that the hounds for Old Dominion are primarily red and white, with a little black patch thrown in here and there. Jones said that the color really doesn’t matter. “A good hound is a good color, he said. “As long as they chase the fox, that’s all we care about. Jones confessed that he did get an idea after seeing some other hounds. “I’ve seen some blue dogs, he said. “Their coats have a bluish tint to them, and I’d like to have a pack of those. Different hounds means different personalities. Jones said that one in particular stands out. “We have this bitch named Oakley, and she comes out and says, ‘Hey, how are you doing?’ She’s the biggest ham we’ve ever had, he stated. “A couple of years ago we had a day at Great Meadow where school kids could come out and see foxhounds and horses up close, and Oakley wanted to be in the middle of them all. She knows that she’s special. “Our hounds are not wild or aggressive or angry, Fendley stated. “They’re like friendly pets. Getting them home “Children and hounds are a natural match, Joyce Fendley stated. “When they’re puppies, they are properly socialized and well loved. We have any number of people who hunt with these hounds, and they get in line to claim them when they retire. And they end up with a great retirement home. People fight over them. Blassic said that she can tell that Lincoln misses his

former life. “He gets upset when I go foxhunting,” she stated. “He really wants to go, and he knows when I’m going out. And when I get back, he comes out and sniffs the truck and trailer. He recognizes the scent of the other hounds.” Being outdoors all the time, how do they adapt to a more indoor life. “Well, they do need some space to run,” Blassic said. “They’re not the kind of a dog that you can leave in an apartment all day long, but I’ve never had one make the tiniest mistake in the house, and that’s incredible.” And the adaptation continues apace. “You know that they’re adapting when you open the refrigerator door, and they materialize,” Blassic said with a laugh. “Lincoln is beginning to get really close to me,” she continued. Their bond with humans is very strong. Wherever I go, he’s pretty much with me. I think he’s found a little bit of doggy heaven, and I think he deserves it. He’s as good as gold.” Photos by Richard Clay.

hospices have been established across the country in an effort to help families live, grieve and cope with end-of-life issues together in the comfort of their own home. “Many people don’t know about Hospice or simply don’t understand what we do,” said Nancy WalbridgeO’Connell, Community Relations Director for Hospice of the Rapidan (HOTR) in Culpeper. “It’s about more than just medical care,” she explained, “it’s about social issues and family; we believe that everyone has the right to die pain-free and with dignity, in their own home, with their family surrounding them.” There are two types of hospices, Medicare-approved hospices and allvolunteer hospices. Medical hospices are staffed with licensed doctors and nurses as well as other professionals and are able to administer medical care. All-volunteer hospices cannot dispense medications or medical services, but they can help with any other issues or wishes of patients and often work in conjunction with medical hospices to ensure patients receive the utmost care possible. Our area is served by two medical hospices: Hospice of the Rapidan, who just celebrated their 25th anniversary in October and Capital Hospice. Two of the misconceptions these organizations and their allvolunteer chapters meet is a general misunderstanding of what they do and whom they serve as well as where Certified nursing assistant, Helen, pictured here with their funding comes from. one of our therapy dogs Dickens and a patient. “We’re probably under
by Jennifer Heyns s our attention begins to turn to preparations for the holidays, our hearts tend to swell, making charity a priority now more than any other time of year. Although many of us have suffered economically this year, November is a time for counting one’s blessings. Hopefully we can all count among them the health and well-being of our loved ones, having our basic necessities met and just generally being well-off. November is also National Hospice Month. Luckily our community is served by a wonderful organization that works tirelessly all year long tending to the needs of our fellow community members who may not be as fortunate as many of us are blessed to be. Hospice began in the United States in 1974 in Connecticut as people began to see the value of bringing terminally ill patients to spend their remaining days at home instead of in a hospital. serving our area by maybe 40 percent,” estimated O’Connell based on her experience with the public’s lack of knowledge of the organization. In order to be deemed “Hospice Appropriate”, meaning eligible for Hospice assistance, a patient must have received a medical prognosis of having six months or less left to live. When a patient requests Hospice assistance, a local Hospice will step in and evaluate the patient, their home and their family and formulate a plan of action to relocate the patient back into their home, assisted living facility or nursing home as well as a plan for medical care, pain management and assistance for the entire family during their time of need. “For us it’s all about what the patient wants during their last months,” explained O’Connell, “We have a medical director on staff who is a part of every patient’s care plan, registered nurses who are trained in palliative care and who help with pain management and comfort levels, 30 plus fulland part-time workers including a Chaplain, a Grief Care Coordinator and a Volunteer Coordinator who manages over 100 volunteers.” At present HOTR does not have any patients on-site, all of their care is given in the patients’ homes, however they are hoping that will soon change. The organization recently purchased approximately 10 acres of property in Culpeper on which they plan to build a 20,000 square foot Hospice House. “We want it to be like any normal home,” said O’Connell, “It will have a gourmet kitchen, dining room, patio, bedrooms, a children’s play room and families will be able to stay there during Hospice Continued on Page 16 WARRENTON LIFESTYLE

It will be as close to home as we can make it for those who can‘t stay in their own home. O’Connell said that they are modeling the design of their Hospice House after Casey House, an acute care facility managed by Montgomery Hospice in Maryland. For the all-volunteer hospices, taking care of patients is quite a different role; their primary concern is ensuring that each patient lives the remainder of their days to the fullest and that their families are taken care of properly at the same time. “Our job is to go into the home and relieve the families and help with anything non-medical that they need, said Gil Brooker, Community Outreach Director for Hospice Support of Fauquier County in Warrenton. of volunteers who undergo 30 hours of training, even if they are only going to be performing ofďŹ ce duties. “We want all of our volunteers to understand what it’s like to be in the home of a dying patient and what it is we really do,â€? said Brooker. Brooker recalled one volunteer that has been working with Hospice patients that he thinks of as “a very A patient with his granddaughter and a “Build-alively and creative volunteerâ€?. psychotherapists, to anyone in the area regardless of Hospice eligibility. Additionally, they have compiled a loan closet which includes a myriad of medical equipment such as hospital beds and bath chairs, disposables like adult diapers and bed pads and consumables like dietary supplements and drinks. These, too, are available to anyone in the county who is in need. While caring for Hospice patients, Hospice Support performs many duties for the terminally ill and their families; things that are often overlooked in such turmoil and emotional strain. “We go into the home and relieve family members so that they are free to run errands or take care of other things, we read to the patients, bathe them, feed them, keep them company, play cards with them and make sure that they are being well cared for,” clarified Brooker. Brooker noted that many of the people he encounters, patients or not, are under the impression that
Hospice is either a government-run and funded operation or that health insurance covers their expenses. The truth of the matter is that Hospices, especially all-volunteer chapters like Hospice Support are on their own as far as funding goes. All of their services are completely free to those they help. They obtain their funding through direct mail, fundraisers, donations, the occasional grant and sometimes through the estate of a generous patient who has passed on. According to O’Connell, HOTR is a Medicare funded Hospice, but even that comes far from footing the bill for all of the services they render during any given year. “We are reimbursed, on average, about $138 a day per patient,” divulged O’Connell, “Many of our patients have medications that cost more than that.” HOTR, said O’Connell helps on average 300 patients and their families annually through Hospice care, grief counseling and other beneficial
services. Although November is National Hospice Month, neither of the local Hospice chapters has plans for grandstanding or fundraising through expensive events. HOTR, said O’Connell will be donating a copy of Isabelle’s Dream to each county library in the five counties they serve. The book, written by Betsy Bottino Arenella, is a story designed to help children cope with the grief of losing a loved one. Hospice Support of Fauquier County will be sending out their annual angel ornament to everyone on their mailing list, along with a donation envelope. “It’s certainly not required that they make a donation,” said Brooker, “but if they can, it’s certainly appreciated.” Brooker admitted that they are a bit worried about donations this year, since the economy has tightened the budgets of so many families in the area, but he is hopeful, he says, because many times in what he calls the “lean Hospice Continued on Page 20

Local Teacher, Author and Scientist Karl Pribam “The Magellan of the Brain” by George Rowand
L
ast month in Warrenton Lifestyles, we took at quick look at one half of what surely is one of Warrenton’s most interesting couples, Katherine Neville and Karl Pribram. Neville, a world-famous novelist, recently launched her latest book, “The Fire,” with an on-going book tour that includes stops here and in Europe. Meanwhile, Pribram continues his teaching career which has stretched from Yale to Stanford to Radford and now to Georgetown University. Last month he sat down for an interview with this reporter. Brains R Us Pushing 90, there is a spring in his step, a twinkle in his eye, and a sense of curiosity that is almost palpable. And fun, oh, my! Karl Pribram carries a youthful aura of fun about him – see the almost shoulder-length hair – like he is a kid in college instead of a teacher of college kids. His text books have become classics. He knows and has worked with some of the most famous scientists in the 20th century. He’s lived all around the world, taught at important colleges and universities and carries a weighty description for his life-long work: “The Magellan of the Brain.” At an age when many have long since retired, he’s still out there, writing, researching and reaching out to the next generation of students. His story could serve as a guide to those who plan for a life of early retirement and endless rounds of golf or games of tennis. Pribram was born in Vienna, Austria in 1919. Precocious, he decided early on to follow a career in medicine and became a neurosurgeon. He said NOVEMBER 2008
that he didn’t care too much for the formalized study he encountered in medical school. “I got my MD when I was 21,” Pribram said. “I loved college, but I hated med school. I got my degree at the University of Chicago and passed my boards, and I started learning after that.” His specialty was memory and brain
more sophisticated than originally thought. In one of his experiments he took newborn cats and placed horizontally- or vertically-striped contact lenses into their eyes. This caused the cats’ brains to become horizontally- and vertically- oriented. But when the lenses were removed, the behavior of the cats was virtually the same. They did not, in fact, see a

What he discovered was that the brain functions in ways that are far
horizontal or a vertical world, which stumped scientists. Pribram eventually connected the idea of a hologram to that of the brain’s functions. Then it made sense. The procedure that goes into making a hologram has been known for more than a half century. A laser beam is split and one part photographs an object while the other photographs mirrored images of the same object. The beams are projected onto a photographic plate Pribram Continued on Page 31 29

or onto film. When laser light is then shown through the film, the object is reproduced in three dimensions. If the image is on a plate, the plate can be smashed, and each piece will still carry the full image of the object. Up until that point, it was widely believed that specific parts of the brain carried specific memories. Pribram postulated that the brain was like a hologram and that the memories were spread throughout. In collaboration with quantum physicist David Bohm, he developed that theory that came to be known as “The Holonomic Model,” which theorizes that memory and information are stored in the brain as wave interference patterns. On the move Following Yale, he went to Stanford University in 1958 and taught there until mandatory retirement forced him to leave. It was while at Stanford that he met Katherine Neville. “I got to be 70, and I had to leave Stanford. I say I got fired,” he explained with an impish grin. “We were looking for a place to go, and one of my students was trying to get me a place at Virginia Tech, and she heard that Radford University had an opening, an endowed chair, so the head of the department called me, and I said, ‘Okay, how about if I come by tonight?’ And he said, ‘No, no, more officially.’ I had never heard of Radford. I said that I could stop by on the way back from Europe. The president’s wife had read my books in college, and when we got there, it was like old home week. And they offered me a job that paid much more than I got at Stanford. I said, ‘Let’s do 5 years,’ and then we did another 5 years, and then another 3 years. Honestly, I had a good run.” Pribram said that he truly enjoyed working at Radford. “Having a laboratory is wonderful when you get results. Sometimes the results are 5-10 years in coming. three out of 10 are extremely helpful, and the other 7 are not. They want to show that they know more than the experimenters. My labs are like people putting on a play ... a small group pulling together, and it lasts five to seven years and then there is a breakup. “At Radford U, in 10 years, I got the lab to be up there with Stanford, MIT and so forth, and one week, the administrations came along and said they needed the space, and we were out of there.â€? After Radford, Pribram and Neville settled in Warrenton. They had friends in the area and wanted to be on the east coast. Educational observations A teacher for most of his life, Pribram brings a trained eye to the subject of education in America. “I always get the best students,â€? he stated, “and most of them never know how to write a sentence. We have
to teach them how to write. So the question is, if we compare ourselves to other places, we also have to ask some questions. Are they getting a good background? Are they innovative? In England, when they get up to high school, they take exams that cover what they have learned. And it takes us 4 years of college to catch up to what they know in high school. His career has included stints abroad. “I lived in Moscow for five years in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, and I’d test the system ... cross the streets where I wasn’t supposed to, that kind of thing, because I knew that they didn’t like that, he said. “But I went to opera every night. They did support science and the arts very, very much. “I was on a Presidential committee right after Sputnik went up, and everybody in America was saying, ‘They’re going to conquer us!’ he continued. “And I said, ‘The Russians aren’t a threat. A scientist had to use his old manuscripts for toilet paper. To those who say that American kids don’t know math and the sciences, he responds, “They’ve never known math and the sciences. It’s always been a minority that studied those subjects, and we’ve always attracted the best minds from abroad. Pribram maintains that America has prospered most when it has opened its doors and let in students who carried back what they learned here to their own countries. “I’m not worried about giving this stuff to the Chinese or to anyone else. America has attracted the best minds from abroad for a long time, and it has benefited America. We’ll be alright. We’re in good shape. It’s certainly true of my students at Georgetown. I have no worry about our kids. And there are different ways to learn, he said. “Travel is education, and all of my grandchildren have traveled ... Thailand, Fiji, and other places. I went all over Europe when I was a student. The constant author Pribram currently is working on another book. “I’m working on my latest book, he stated. “I’ve let a few people look at it. I’m constantly revising. Until the day it gets published, it will be revised. It’s been finished for two or three years. His style of writing is different than the way that Katherine Neville writes. “In science, we have to write in the third person, and that’s my style, Pribram said, “and Katherine gets to write in the first person. Microsoft Word puts a green line under all passive structures, and I don’t use all the suggestions, but I do use some. I don’t have to change content, I have to change emphasis. We’ve had trouble with only one chapter, and Pribram Continued on Page 34 WARRENTON LIFESTYLE

I’ve redone that chapter. I’ve redone five sections in the whole thing. I enjoy doing it. There now are 35,000 neuroscientists, and to keep up with the best of them is a job. “Katherine’s novels are being read in history class, in English class and in drama classes. The funny thing is that she hated history, and she still hates philosophy, and here she is, doing fabulous work in those fields. The books that he has written are too numerous to list. “I Wrote “Languages of the Brain in 1971, and it’s still in print, he continued. “Most of my books have been classics. There’s one on Freud that’s been printed into a number of languages. Constantly on the move, teaching here, lecturing there, receiving yet another award – Pribram received the first Dagmar and Vaclav Havel Prize at Charles University in Prague, The Czech Republic for his achievements in neuroscience – Pribram doesn’t want to slow down. “I think the 80s are the difficult years. My hardest year was 2007, he said. And Katherine Neville wants him to keep going. “Katherine said, ‘If you retire, you will gradually die or I will kill you,’ he joked. It’s a long way from Vienna to Warrenton, and a long path that he has covered. And Pribram’s education continues. His father, a famous biologist who once met Albert Einstein on a hike in the mountains, had a blunt assessment of Pribram’s education – or lack thereof, in his opinion. “My father said that I wouldn’t amount to much, he said with a laugh. “I could speak only German and English and some French. He could speak 14 languages, including some ancient ones. George Rowand is the author of “Diary of a Dream: MY Journey in Thoroughbred Racing. WARRENTON LIFESTYLE
Math + Music The Warrenton Chorale M
r. Bob Schoenike has a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Vermont. He also plays the euphonium and directs the handbell choirs at Our Savior Lutheran Church and the Warrenton Chorale. How did he get from math to music? Mr. Schoenike explains his journey in his own words: When you attend a high school with fewer than 80 students in grades nine through twelve, you sometimes feel like you’re missing out on all the opportunities a big school offers. I shouldn’t have felt that way. My high school advanced math class had three students. How’s that for a student to teacher ratio? And our high school band, where I played the euphonium, played lots of wonderful classical music and Sousa marches. The step to a vocation was difficult but math and science led me to engineering school, a decision probably influenced by Sputnik. I eventually received a MSEE from the University of Vermont and spent several years of my 40 year engineering career designing microprocessors, signal processors, and other integrated circuits. Music was always there throughout my engineering career, but it came to the forefront about fifteen years ago when my wife and I joined the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians (ALCM). The annual ALCM conferences provide members the opportunity to see and hear some of the world’s best musicians in acoustically great venues (the new Catholic cathedral in Los Angeles, the Crystal Cathedral, the Mormon cathedral in Kansas City, Oberlin College, Valparaiso University, the outdoor Spreckles organ in San Diego). The NOVEMBER 2008
ALCM offered seminars on handbells in worship which planted the seed of starting a handbell choir at Our Saviour Lutheran Church (OSLC) in Warrenton. After a period of time for fundraising, we purchased a three octave set of handbells and I began directing the handbell choir in 1997. The OSLC handbell choir traveled to Solingen, Germany in the summer of 2006 and played a concert at the Lutheran Church. We currently play on five octaves of handbells and two aluminum bells in the sixth octave, five octaves of hand chimes, two octaves of Cymbells, and various other percussion instruments. All of the bells are made of bronze except the aluminum C2 that is nineteen inches in diameter and weighs nine pounds and nine ounces. My wife and I belong to the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers (AGEHR) which offers a broad range of skill development classes for both ringers and directors. We are both certified as handbell directors by the AGEHR. I began directing the Warrenton Chorale Handbell Choir in 2003. It’s exciting to be part of a group of skilled ringers from so many different churches. Because of the nature of the instrument, handbell ringers are dependent on one another and I think that brings us closer together. The motto of the AGEHR is Uniting People Through a Musical Art. That truly happens in the Warrenton Chorale. We play a wide variety of medium to difficult music, frequently playing music written for some of the best handbell choirs in the world including the Raleigh Ringers and Sonos. The Warrenton Chorale Handbell Choir accompanies the Warrenton Chorale and plays solo pieces for the Warrenton Chorale concert series.
The Warrenton Chorale has been entertaining the local citizenry since 1953 with its “Christmas in Music” concert. Accompanied by an organist, pianists and a variety of local musicians, our performance includes the Adult Chorale, the Youth Chorale and the Handbell Choir. Ring in the holiday season by celebrating with us and creating a Christmas tradition for the whole family. You will experience the splendor of “Christmas in Music” with a rich mixture of traditional and creative musical arrangements. Please join us for a concert that’s sure to put you in the mood
for the Holiday season. The Warrenton Chorale’s “Christmas in Music” will be presented Dec. 4, 5, and 6 at 8pm each night and a 2pm matinee on Saturday. All concerts will be held at the Warrenton United Methodist Church. Tickets are $6.00 in advance and may be purchase at the following locations starting November 10th: Ribbons in Warrenton, Rhodes Gift Shop in Warrenton, BB&T Bank in Bealeton and the New Baltimore Animal Hospital. Tickets are $8.00 at the door. Don’t miss the chance to see Director Bob Schoenike perform with his choir of handbell ringers. For more information on this and other concerts, please visit our website at www. warrentonchorale.org. 35
Grand Opening: Fauquier Health Emergency Department Doubles in Size For the staff and physicians of Fauquier Health, the unveiling of the new Emergency Department waiting room has been anticipated with growing excitement. When the big, beautiful area debuted it proved to be worth the wait. The ED staff began accepting patients into its new, improved entrance and renovated waiting room on October 15; staff and visitors alike were surprised and delighted at the new space. According to Deb Larsen, RN in the Emergency Department, patients and their families really appreciate the homey feel of the new waiting room. She said that everyone has been delighted at the welcoming, soothing atmosphere. “They say it makes them feel more comfortable.â€? Dr. Joseph Servideo, chairman of the Fauquier Hospital Emergency Department, said, “The family waiting room provides a lot more comfort for our patients. We’ve also opened up more exam rooms and added more physicians and clinical staff. All of this means we’ll be able to serve our patients much more quickly.â€? The new ED expansion will not only allow for more exibility during peak patient times, but it will also help the staff adapt to increasing demands created by future growth. “The hospital administration was very open to making the ED a little larger than what we needed for right now,â€? Dr. Servideo explained. “So this new expansion should easily serve us for the next ďŹ ve to 10 years.â€?

ust as with charity, shopping should also be something that begins at home. Naturally, none of us has a strip mall attached to our houses, but much of what we need from groceries to gifts, is produced right in our own community. We’re all glaringly aware of the sad state of our economy; jobs are being lost, the stock market has taken a tumble, the housing market is still staggering, gas prices, although thankfully declining, are still sky-high, and things, in general, just seem to cost too much. It’s definitely a learning experience, but it’s also a great time for deciding to make a positive impact on the community that surrounds us. While we can’t individually make a large influence on the global or national markets, we can individually and collectively improve the status of
Fauquier County, which will, in turn, improve ourselves and our own state of affairs. Fauquier County is generally thought of as a tight-knit group of environmentally-conscious, agriminded people who all seem to know each other. In fact, it’s one of the things that’s most endearing to its residents and is most apparent to visitors. When out-of-town relatives come to visit me and we patronize local businesses they are quick to point out that everywhere we go we bump into several people I know. It follows that we are fond of supporting local businesses and farms over large, commercial entities. For that reason the Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) initiated the Buy Fresh Buy Local (BFBL) program. “The goal of the campaign is to make it easier for consumers to find and purchase local foods with the goal of increasing financial viability to
local farms, protecting farmland and preserving our rural heritage,” said Melissa Wiley, PEC Director of Special Projects. The BFBL program was first implemented in the Charlottesville area in 2006, but has broadened to the northern Piedmont area (Fauquier and Loudoun Counties) just this year. The PEC assays to bring awareness to this campaign mainly through direct mail; sending community members brochures and notices about BFBL explaining what the program is and where consumers can find fresh local produce and products. Wiley said that they will also be putting out holiday guides at local businesses for people to pick up that will indicate what type of farm products can be found throughout the county during the winter months. A similar effort is being made through the Internet. Owner of Hollin Farms in Delaplane, Tom Davenport along with colleague Steve Knoblock launched FarmFoody.org this spring with the hopes of bringing community members and local farms together in a chic, newage way. And it seems to be working: to date they boast 1700 members already. They call it the facebook for farms. The application may be very different from the PEC’s BFBL program, but the goal is the same; to help support local small farms by encouraging residents to buy directly from them. The need for such programs exists on many levels. From the farm standpoint there are many advantages to selling directly to the consumer. It is very difficult for small farms to compete for grocery store and restaurant contracts, explained Davenport. Much of the food you see in stores and restaurants has Local Buying Continued on Page 40

come from very large, very commercial farms. It has gotten so that small farms are just not proďŹ table endeavors, however when a small farm goes out of business it’s bad news for everyone. The farmer will likely lose or sell his land, displacing his family. The land will most likely be bought by developers who are interested in putting in as many homes per acre as is possible. This, in turn, adds more consumers, trafďŹ c and resource consumption to the local economy. When small farms are able to sustain themselves by selling their products directly to their own community, they are able to stay aoat, keep their land and contribute to the well-being of the local economy. In return local consumers are beneďŹ ted by having lush farmland in their area, as opposed to more homes and competition for local resources and have a direct line to the freshest produce money can buy. According to the PEC’s 2008 BFBL yer, if every family in the Northern Piedmont region spent just $10 per week on farm products we would generate nearly $33 million per year of “direct economic investment to our regions’ economy, farm families and communities.â€? “Local foods don’t ship long distances and are fresher,â€? explained Wiley, “usually reaching the consumer within 24 hours of harvest. Local farmers can offer varieties of produce that are bred for taste and freshness rather than for shipping and long shelf life.â€? Additionally, she mentioned, many fruits and vegetables can lose nutrients quickly after being harvested, meaning that the produce you take home from the farm can be more nutritious than the produce you buy at the supermarket. “Additionally,â€? noted Davenport, “even with high gas prices and uncertainty about the economy, a trip to a local farm is often a cheaper outing for a family than a trip to the movies with popcorn and soda.â€? In addition to the healthier snacks you’ll ďŹ nd at your local farms, you’ll also WARRENTON LIFESTYLE

find a great, inexpensive, wholesome way to entertain your family. For kids who don’t live on a farm of their own, it’s very exciting to visit one and it gives the adults a nostalgic sense of a simpler life, like when they were kids. Many of the local farms have animals, pick-your-own crops, space to run around and other fun features. The BFBL mailer has a listing of local farms, sorted by county, with their location, contact information and indicates what types of produce and products you will find there as well as any special designations that farm has, like “certified organic” or “humane” or “grass fed”. At FarmFoody.org you are able to check out the local farms, see what’s available, and interact with farm owners on the Internet. “We are easy to get started with,” said Knoblock, “and easy to update your web presence. Our FAQ and bulletins help reduce the amount of work handling inquiries and help market the farm products.” Basically, if you are a consumer you can sign up on FarmFoody. org and begin interacting with farms in a matter of seconds. To register all you have to do is tell the site your account type - if you’re a farm you select “Farm“, if you’re a consumer you select “Foody”, it’s like being a Roadie only you’re hot for tamales instead of bass players. Then you can make up your user name and a password and type in your email address, zip code (so that the site can determine which farms are closest to you) and tags. The tags can be anything you are interested in finding or purchasing at local farms. Once you are registered you have an account on the site. You can make friends with other Foodies or farms, post your profile for others to see, post bulletins, recipes or conduct searches to see who’s near you or what products are now available. If you choose to subscribe to bulletins you’ll be notified, by email, whenever a farm or a foody in your friends network posts something new. “The social networking tool allows a ‘friends’ relationship to be built which creates a connection,” said Davenport, who said that FarmFoody.org was designed not only to get consumers to buy directly from local farms, but also to encourage more social interaction between the two. The search feature on the site is particularly handy. You

can ask FarmFoody.org to ďŹ nd all of the farms within a certain amount of miles from your home (you choose the distance). To give you a better idea, I did a search of my own to ďŹ nd out which farms are within 10 miles of my home in Delaplane. The search responded with 11 farms, each marked with a distance from me (some say “Farm less than one mileâ€?, while others are ďŹ ve and nine miles away). Each farm within my search popped up with a summary indicating what they have to offer, their hours of operation and a link to view their proďŹ le. A common misconception among consumers is that farms only harvest during the warm months and that there is nothing to buy during the winter. In fact, most farms have something to offer year-round. According to the BFBL’s Fruit & Vegetable Availability Calendar apples, broccoli, green peppers and spinach can be bought well into the area’s cold season - not to mention Christmas trees, meat and eggs, milk and cheese, baked goods and more. Additionally, the PEC points out that local products can be found throughout the area and not just at the farms themselves. “The Warrenton Farmers’ Market is one of the oldest in the area and is a great place to ďŹ nd local foods,â€? said Wiley. “People can also ďŹ nd local foods at several local grocers, including IGA and Northern Lights Seafood in Marshall, the Natural Marketplace in Warrenton and Fauquier’s Finest Country Butcher Shop in Bealeton.â€? Although many farmers’ markets close for the winter, Archwood Green Barns in The Plains opens for a couple of weekends during December to enable local farmers and vendors to sell some of their winter wares around the holidays. If you need to get out of your kitchen but still want to support local farms, the BFBL guide also speciďŹ es local caterers and restaurants that have “demonstrated a commitment to using local foods in their dishes when possibleâ€?. the Depot restaurant and catering in Warrenton, Farmer’s Wife Market in Remington, Girasole in The Plains, and Hunter’s Head Tavern in Upperville. Admittedly, it takes a little more thought and effort to buy local. You will need to find out what’s available and where you need to go to get it, but the benefits make it a worthwhile endeavor. The PEC reports that every year Virginia loses more than 23,000 acres of farmland to developers, mainly because more than half of our farms report a net loss of income from annual operations. With just a minimal amount of thought and action from each family, we can work together to make farming in Fauquier County a viable business, giving farmers the support they need to be successful and saving ourselves the hassles that come with additional area commercial and residential development.

Rogue Security Software Steals Time and $$$$ by Klaus Fuechsel During the last few weeks, almost every other computer brought in for repair was infected with one or more variations of rogue security software. Have you ever been surfing on the internet and suddenly a window pops up saying:
You can replace the word WinAntivirus Pro 2006 with others like Winfixer, Antivirgear, Antivirus Gold/2008/2009, Drive Cleaner, IEDefender, MACsweeper, MS Antivirus, MS Antispyware, SpySheriff, Systemdoctor, TheSpyBot, SpywareStormer, etc. There are literally hundreds of variations out there. When this happens, some people panic. They rush to update their antivirus software, such as McAfee or Norton from Symantec, and when they do, a new screen pops up and asks for credit card information to renew the subscription. Often, however, the new screen shows an antivirus software other than what the computer user intended to update. The screen looks authentic but it may say something like “VirusProtectPro”. The buyer won’t get what he wanted, and he definitely won’t like what he gets. The new software might initially stop the popups, but it won’t protect you against other attacks. On the contrary, it will most likely create additional problems and continue to ask the unwitting user to buy more protection. How did I get into this mess? Rogue security software uses malware (malicious software) to advertise or install itself or to force computer users to pay for removal of nonexistent malware. Rogue software will often install a Trojan horse 44
to download a trial version. By downloading one thing, the computer is unaware that it is downloading something else hidden inside. For example, when you download and install a “free” game, music or video file, the Trojan malicious software will install as well. If you have a MAC and think MACs don’t get infected, be aware that we’ve seen the following screen even in Firefox: You cannot just click on “cancel” to resolve the problem. Lately, it doesn’t seem to make any difference if you click “cancel” or “ok” or even the little “X” at the right hand corner in Windows. The malicious software will download
and install, and will bug you over and over again with popups and requests to buy the program. The less antivirus protection you have, the more likely these con artist programs will infect your computer. Make sure you have a non-rogue antivirus program installed, such as Norton, McAfee, Avast, Avg, Trend Micro, Kaspersky or NOD32. You should only have one antivirus program installed at a time to avoid conflict. Some clients tell me proudly that their computer came preinstalled five years ago with, for example, Norton, and they run scans every day. What they don’t realize is that Norton needs to be updated on a yearly basis. The result is that the protection on the computer is only good for viruses that came out four years ago. Even if your computer’s antivirus software is fully updated, it can still be infected if your computer is hit with the first wave of a new virus. Even if the software detects the infection, it might be incapable of removing it because it melted together with a system file. In this case, Windows will not allow the antivirus software to touch or remove the infection. What should you not do when you notice an infection? Don’t panic! programs, call your credit card company immediately. You may not be able to stop the virus but you may be able to cancel the monetary transaction. Some people try to restore their computer to a previous status before the infection. This sounds like a good idea, but in my experience this doesn’t remove all the infection. And you might lose any software recently installed or notice that Windows is experiencing other problems. Some clients go to the extreme measure of using computer recovery software (sometimes offered on bootup of the PC) to reinstall Windows itself. This will remove all viruses and you will have a clean system but you will lose all of your data and programs. If this happens, I have tools that might be able to recover a good amount of the data. How can you minimize the damage? Some tech blogs recommend disconnecting the internet right after NOVEMBER 2008
a rogue software screen pops up. As mentioned before, do not try to click yourself out of the popup—usually the download will be triggered anyway. By quickly unplugging or disabling the network connection or disconnecting the modem, you may be able to beat the download but, unfortunately, you may not! Some sources also suggest that pressing Alt-F4 on a PC will minimize the damage. At some point, a backup of your data while not connected to the internet, might be a good idea. Some data might be infected, but you can clean up the ďŹ les once your system is working properly. These rogue security software programs are tricky and tough, and it’s hard to remove them completely. If you really want to risk doing your own surgery, you can try to uninstall the program, but this usually will result in an error message. Otherwise, the tools say that they removed the “evil,â€? but after the next reboot or even a few days later, everything is back and the partially dormant infection reawakes. he temperatures have finally dropped and it really feels like fall now. Halloween has come and gone and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. There are also many changes in our local business scene. Warrenton Jewelers, in the Warrenton Village shopping center, has now opened their new shop and TLC Heating and Air Conditioning has opened a new office on Falmouth Street with a specialty in “green” geothermal systems. On Main Street, Thompson Building Materials has opened to help you with windows, doors, cabinets, deck products and door hardware. Although it is not in Warrenton, I think it is worth mentioning the rumor that the skating rink we once knew as Hugo’s will come to life again as Carroll’s. If my information is correct, it will open on Halloween night. At the end of the year, Loni Colvin will be closing Loni’s Services so that she can concentrate on her new Horizon Real Estate business. We also have two temporary closings; Carousel Frozen Treats is now closed until next spring and Piccadilly Limited, on Main Street, will be closing for the winter to do some renovations. The recently opened 3rd Street Coffee has moved all of its goodies to a new space on Main Street, where the Bead Shoppe used to be and Drs. Woodside and Sentz have also taken advantage of a new space and moved from Main Street into the new Old Town Athletic Club building on Walker Drive. They are accepting new patients at this time. Eaheart Equipment is now making it easier to get your tractor or riding lawn mower serviced, because they will now come to your home to perform the service. Jeweler/Goldsmith Larry Silva is celebrating 10 years with Hartman Jewelers this month. Silent Partner Security Systems, which is headquartered in Marshall, is opening a residential show room on Main Street in Warrenton. Because of a recent merger of their residential department with Front Row Home Theatre, they will be offering not only alarm systems and home automation, but also home theater options of all kinds. I need to correct a statement I made last month about the new Oak Hill National Bank; I stated that they would be headquartered in Marshall with a branch in Warrenton, when in fact it is just the reverse. The old McMichael’s building on Broadview Avenue will be the headquarters and they will have a branch in Marshall.
