A Time of Thanks With so much to be grateful for, it seemed appropriate to take the time to write down as many things that are appreciated each day from the moment I jump out of bed in the morning until my lids slam shut at night.

I am very thankful for:

My wife of (almost) 14 years, Holly. Being able to live in the great Town of Warrenton. My son, Kevin, for getting ready to graduate from college on time while working hard. That fall has come and its weather is refreshing. My son, Mike, a great addition this year to Piedmont Press & Graphics and for being a reliable partner for watching football. Celebrating 23 years in business this November as TR Press (our parent company) was launched in November of 1987. My daughter, Ella, 6, for being the light of my life every day. Having two best friends since grade school & high school, Patrick and John. The Redskins having a decent season. Great neighbors that seem to look out for each other and take great care of our neighborhood.

Our political system, while flawed, still works better than any other on earth. My son, John, 6, who has proven he is his own little man by declaring he is a Virginia Cavalier in a house full of Hokie fans. Being healthier today than I was 10 years ago. Having a job and getting a paycheck. DVRs (digital video recorders) that allow me to watch programs when they are most convenient and in less than 75% of the normal time. A wide a variety of friends that span the spectrum of classes, ages, cultures and beliefs. 24 wonderful years living in Virginia. A great group of employees who perform their job well and respect each other. Being part of a business community that supports itself and works hard to get ahead. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Spinnersâ&#x20AC;?, those guys and gals that cycle hard at the gym while keeping motivated and entertained as we struggle for breath. The instructors that may be half-crazy but know how to push our bodies to another level -- yelling at us and cheering for us while making it look so easy. The growing diversity we have in and around Warrenton and how much it has added to our community. Serving as a Rotarian for 12 years. Our wonderful customers, some that have been with us since our first day in business. My fellow board members at the Greater Warrenton Chamber of Commerce who gave their blood,

sweat and tears to get our organization launched and with whom I now celebrate our first anniversary. The public servants that proudly serve every day. Fauquier History

During WWII, the People of Warrenton Did Their Part on the Homefront By John Toler An excerpt from the upcoming Warrenton history book, to be published by the Town of Warrenton and Partnership for Warrenton later this year.

By 1940, the possibility of a Second World War seemed stronger every day, as conquests by Germany in Europe and Japan in the Far East dominated the news. Communities began to prepare for war, and Warrenton was no exception. In addition to sending thousands of men and women to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces during the upcoming global conflict, Warrenton and Fauquier County gave much to the civilian home effort needed to win the war. Support for the war effort took many

forms in the months before the United States entered the conflict. School children were asked to give up dessert and give the money saved to the Red Cross Relief effort. In October 1940, a Red Cross Motor Corps was organized under Miss Dorothy Neyhart. There was a nationwide registration for serving in the military on October 16, 1940, and in Fauquier County, 2,493 young men registered. Two weeks later, a Draft Lottery was held by Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, with those so

classified getting a call-up number. By March 1941, planning was under way to organize local militia units, the Fauquier company of the Virginia Protective Force, and later, a state guard unit. The gymnasium of the elementary school on Academy Hill was made available for a headquarters and â&#x20AC;&#x153;regulation armory,â&#x20AC;? and on March 27, 1941, the Warrenton Rifles, Company 111 of the VPF, was mustered in as a unit of the state organization. 111 was Capt. W. Murray Black, a former artillery officer, assisted by 1st Lt. John Butler and 1st Sgt. Charles V. B. Cushman. With an authorized strength of 60 men, the recruitment effort was continuous, as young men joining the V.P.F. soon joined or were drafted into regular military service. As the year progressed, there were more signs of impending war. Some people started practicing rationing by observing “gasless Sundays” and conserving fuel by not driving. Others participated in drives to collect unneeded aluminum items to be melted down and used to build aircraft. In late June 1941, meetings were held to establish a chapter of the United Service Organization (USO) in Warrenton. It became clear the need was already there when on March 15, 1941, 5,000 U.S. Army personnel camped on the grounds of the Stuyvesant School while on their way to training at a camp in Caroline County. Since they knew in advance that the men were coming, townspeople turned out with entertainment, newspapers, writing materials and washing facilities. On December 7, 1941, the citizens of Warrenton received word of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, the “Day of Infamy.” The next day, the U.S. Congress declared war on Japan. A large troop movement accompanied the declaration, with an estimated 60,000 men passing through Warrenton from December 8-12, 1941. Within one week of the Japanese attack, a Regional Defense Council was organized in Alexandria, which in turn empowered each county to set up and run its own local committee system. Chairman of the Fauquier Defense Board was L. W. Trenis of Catlett, assisted by H.L. Gaddis of Marshall and Wallace N. Tiffany and Mrs. George Sloane of Warrenton. Committees operating under the Fauquier board were Food and Clothing, under Mrs. B. R. Glascock; Fuel, under H. T. Dowell; Intelligence (legal and civil liberties) under C. W. Carter and Charles Stone; Labor, Randolph Carter; Medical, under Dr. George Davis; and Publicity, under J. Alfred Austin. A. M. R. Charrington served as Air Raid Warden, and Mrs. James W. Sinclair as Qualified Air Warden Instructor. In early 1942, a company of the Virginia Reserve Militia, which served as a backup for the V.P.F., was formed in Warrenton. Capt. Llewellyn Wood – who commanded the Warrenton Rifles in 1917, and served as an infantry officer in France during World War I – led Company 31 of the V.R.M. Known collectively as the “Fauquier Minutemen,” about one-third of the men in Company 31 were over age 50, and like Capt. Wood, were veterans of World War I. Others immediately joined in home front protection, volunteering to serve as Air Raid Wardens, learning how to care for refugees, and preparing and enforcing blackouts. Wealthy landowner Walter P. Chrysler Jr. contributed $1,250 toward the purchase of an Air Raid Patrol Car, and a total blackout of Warrenton was conducted on the night of February 27, 1942. Air raid shelters were located in the basements of the Fauquier National Bank, the Courthouse and the Clerk’s Office, and the exercise was a success. WWII Continued on Page 12 10

Mayor Wallace N. Tiffany, Town Manager Sidney Shumate, and Councilman Charles G. Stone were appointed to act as the Civilian Defense Committee of the Warrenton Town Council. In addition to participating in the blackouts, citizens were encouraged to support the scrap drives, including salvaging rubber. A two-month drive spent collecting rubber in Fauquier County netted a staggering 290,000 pounds. Paper and kitchen fats were also collected. Along with the scrap drives, rationing became a way of life in Warrenton. Drivers were issued “A” ration cards for passenger cars, and “S (supplemental)” cards for buses, taxicabs, ambulances and hearses. The rationing of food stapes, notably coffee and sugar, were the most dif-

ficult for people; persons over the age of 15 could only have one pound of coffee every five weeks. Every county had a quota of War Bonds to sell each month, and Fauquier County always exceeded its goals. By 1945, the quota had reached $805,000. During the last E-Series Victory Bond canvass, which took place in November 1945, over $104,000 was raised by county schoolchildren, and $230,000 by the Women’s Committee, under Mrs. John Tyssowski. The balance was raised by the Victory Loan Committee, headed by Philip G. Marsteller. During World War II, automobile production lines were shifted to building military hardware, and new cars, mainly 1941 and 1942 models, could only be sold to civilians who obtained a government

permit. Auto dealer Tom Frost offered to store new cars for American dealers at a large, secure storage complex he built in Warrenton near the present-day intersection of Broadview Avenue (U.S. 29 Business) and U.S. 211. Over 1,400 new cars from all over the United States were brought to Frost’s facility on car carriers. In order to save space inside the buildings, an upper deck accessed by ramps was used. In order to prevent theft, guards patrolled the four buildings 24 hours a day, and buckets of water and sand were strategically placed in each building in case of fire. As with vehicles, tires were rationed and could only be purchased with a permit, and Tom Frost stored thousands of new tires in Warrenton during the war.

Red Cross Chapters Meet the Challenge

In addition to the Red Cross services provided to the military personnel stateside and at the battlefronts, members of the Fauquier Red Cross chapters produced surgical dressings for the troops, as they had during World War I. Commercial dressings manufacturers could only produce about 10 percent of the amount needed be shipped overseas, so the rest had to be produced by hand by the mothers, sisters, daughters and wives of the men at war. By early 1943, the local chapters were given quotas averaging over 30,000 dressings per month. To meet this demand,

Red Cross workrooms under the direction of Mrs. A.M.R. Charrington needed 30 workers every weekday, and often operated on evenings and Saturdays in order to meet their goals. When the quota was increased to 68,000 for June 1943, Chapter Chairman Mrs. M. J. O’Connell made an urgent public appeal in The Fauquier Democrat: “Making surgical dressings is tedious, fatiguing and decidedly uninteresting. There are no thrills, no glamour, to spur one on,” she wrote. “Only the recognition that some boy, perhaps one from Fauquier, might be dying for want of one of these vital items.” Other Red Cross committees that contributed to the war effort were: • The Home Services Committee, under Mrs. Charles Jeffries, that helped servicemen and their families communicate in case of emergencies at home, and provided financial aid for families with special needs. • The Production Service, under Mrs. Hunter Brooke, which produced hospital garments for patients at the hospitals at Vint Hill hospital and the Front Royal Remount Station. • First Aid Classes and swimming lessons for all ages, under Mrs. William Emory. • The Disaster Committee, which assisted county residents in case of flood (which occurred in October 1942) or other natural or man-made catastrophes. • The Blood Donor Unit, under Mrs. John Hinkley, which had a monthly quota of up to 130 pints of blood, which was processed into plasma and sent overseas. • The Canteen Corps, under Mrs. S. J. Macy, that provided food and shelter for troops in transit, and departing inductees. • The Motor Corps, under Miss Neyhart, that provided hospital transportation “at all hours” for the ill or injured, assisting the Department of Public Welfare and Vint Hill.

Supporting the troops, keeping the faith

With the opening of Vint Hill Farms Station in 1942 as a principal Army intelligence “listening post,” military personnel from all over the country found themselves living in Warrenton. The community embraced these soldiers as they hoped their sons would be embraced, wherever they were serving far from home. Efforts included opening two rooms of the St. James Episcopal Church Parish Hall as a reading room for the soldiers, and opening the Warrenton Library from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. for the soldiers. In late 1942, Warrenton restaurateur Johnny Kreticos opened the Signal Corps Grill in the Ford Anderson Building at the corner of Culpeper and Main streets, catering to the soldiers who came into town to unwind and have a good meal. The number of troops stationed at Vint Hill caused an immediate housing shortage, especially for married soldiers. To address this need, many of the larger homes in Warrenton were subdivided into, or added apartments that were rented to military personnel. the Red Cross Motor Corps, and other community organizations involved in the war effort. The high point of the day was the dedication of the Fauquier County Honor Roll Board, a large display placed by the Courthouse listing the names of over 1,500 men and women currently serving in the Armed Forces. A similar ambitious effort in support of the troops was a publication put together by Tom Frost and Annie Kays, which listed the name and military address of each man and women from Fauquier County serving in World War II. The first edition was printed and sent to every service member in 1943. Mr. Frost and Mrs. Kays did a second edition with even more names in 1944. In March 1944, the Warrenton USO facility was opened on the second floor of the building at 52 Main Street that housed Lerner Bros. Department Store downstairs. The war was brought home again on June 6, 1944, when over 400 men from Fauquier County participated in the Normandy Invasion. There would 14

be another year of fighting, but the hope of victory on both fronts was becoming more real. April 14, 1945, was a sad day in Warrenton. F. D. Roosevelt had died, and many people went to Calverton that morning to meet his funeral train when it made a stop to take on water. A memorial service was held later that day at the Warrenton Baptist Church. Victory in Europe (VE) Day was May 8, 1945, the day Germany surrendered, and the celebration in Warrenton was subdued, as the Japanese still had to be defeated and the soldiers and sailors brought home. When the Japanese surrendered unconditionally on August 14, 1945 after their home islands were hit by two atomic bombs, the town siren was set off, and church bells rang. Veterans began returning home, but at final count over 100 men and one woman from Fauquier County gave their lives during World War II, or afterwards due to wounds or service-connected illness. A granite marker and plaque listing the names of World War II dead was placed

in front of the Clerk’s Office by the Warrenton Rotary Club, and dedicated on July 3, 1947. The Warrenton Rifles was disbanded on June 5, 1947, and the USO club was closed on December 31, 1947. Through its unity and resolve, the people of Warrenton and Fauquier County contributed much to the winning of World War II, and paid a heavy price in lives lost. Virtually everyone was involved in one way or another, and the legacy of their efforts and sacrifice are the freedoms we enjoy today. Author John Toler is a writer and historian and has served Fauquier County for over 50 years, including 4 decades with the FauquierTimes Democrat. He has written and lectured about many legendary characters in Fauquier County’s history. Toler is the co-author of 250 Years in Fauquier County: A Virginia Story.

music department continues to expand, with adult and “Kids Quest” choirs, and an orchestra. The new “Xtreme Vision Teens” drama team received a standing ovation at a recent performance. Known as the place for kids, the Upward Basketball and Cheerleading program at Battlefield has increased to over 400 area children, and the AWANA kids Bible clubs just began their third year with over 200 children every Wednesday night. The people of Battlefield presently support over 100 missionary families and projects, giving almost $400,000 to worldwide missions last year! In the last 30 years, the church has given over $7,000,000 to missionary projects all over the world. Presently there are five families in the mission field out of Battlefield Baptist ChurchBC, with another 41 called out into full time Christian ministry. “Our passion is ‘keeping the main thing – the main thing,’ which is building faith and families,” Pastor Skinner shares. “We always want it to be known that ‘our hearts are open, and our doors are open’ if you ever have a need. Dear Peggy, Thank you for writing. What you describe is probably the most common issue I see in my mediation practice. Don’t get me wrong, everyone’s story is different and unique, as is each individual and couple, but the underlying issue is the same - two good people, trying their best, taking on the “role” each assumes is important to the other and to the marriage. Your role of “making sure everyone is taken care of” and his role of “providing financially for the family” are not uncommon, however, problems often arise when one spouse’s behavior 22

doesn’t fit the other’s picture of what it should be - and both spouses end up angry, unappreciated, misunderstood, and hurt. So let’s take a step back. Remember when you were dating? My guess is you each made the other your primary focus - checking in with each other often, perhaps even several times a day just to hear the other’s voice – to feel connected; giving deference to the other’s preferences without evaluating or judging the other; willingly adjusting your schedule to fit the other’s. Remember those days? You probably also noticed and enjoyed your

differences and much as your similarities. So what happened? Simply put, the mission changed. Prior to your marriage, your mission was him – and his was you. When you married, each of you took on new roles and responsibilities that didn’t necessarily best serve your pre-marital mission. Your new roles as spouse, and eventually as parent, were each demanding. The specifics of your new roles were probably not mutually defined by you as a couple, but by each of you independently. say in your husband’s daily job decisions. I’m betting he doesn’t have much input on how you run the house or parent your children. In fact, if you ever suggested he approach his job differently, he’d likely resent your suggestion and feel you were involving yourself in “his business,” just as you might be taken aback if he ever told you how to run the household. It’s easy to take your spouse’s efforts for granted while feeling your spouse is taking you for granted, especially when you’re giving your heart and soul to accomplish all that you do for your spouse and your family. The feeling of being taken for granted can easily become the feeling that you’re not important to the most important person in your world. That’s an awful feeling. So what can you do?

Neither of you were trying to make the other secondary; you probably assumed the other would simply understand that whatever changes were occurring had to occur for you to accomplish your new role. Is it possible that for you to feel successful in your new role as wife/ mother you “knew” and assumed your husband also “knew” that you needed to be a stay-at-home mom which meant being the housekeeper, meal preparer, laundry cleaner, kids’ chauffeur, on call, all the time, 24/7 - meaning less time for him? Is it possible that for your

husband to feel successful in his role as husband/father he “knew” and assumed you also “knew” that he needed to be the financial provider which meant long hours at work, maybe a long commute, dealing with pressures from his boss, coworkers, and clients, perhaps traveling away from home at unexpected times, and basically doing whatever it took to keep his job and get the next promotion so he could make ends meet as your family grew from two to five - meaning less time for you? I’d guess neither of you had much, if any, input in what the other’s role would be and how it would play out in your lives together. I’m betting you don’t have much

First, know he’s doing the best he can to perform his role as he sees it; as I’m sure you’re doing the best you can to perform your role as you see it. Next, reevaluate your own role: assess your individual, parental, and marital priorities. It’s so easy to get caught up in the demands of our busy lives and lose sight of our priorities. If you were to decide that your spouse and your relationship were going to again be your priority, then career, parenting, and household decisions could be made in the context of what’s best for your relationship. It’s been my experience that when you put the relationship first, everything else is wellserved. If, instead, you make parenting your mission priority, you may be a great parent, but it would be at the expense of your relationship with your husband. If you refocus on him and adjust your role to serve your mission, you can make parenting decisions that will meet the needs of your relationship and serve your children well. This concept of reestablishing mission priority applies not only to the big decisions in life, but also to the seemingly insignificant ones. Relationships Continued from Page 24 trying to fix our riding lawn mower. By the time she was close enough for me to hear her, her tone and volume sounded urgent. When I heard her, I quickly crawled out from underneath the tractor wondering what was wrong. When I discovered she was yelling for me just to let me know she was leaving to run some errands, I got angry – she’d interrupted my “tractor fixing role” for “no good reason.” Little did she realize that I was doing something “very important” – that fixing things is one of the critical components of my “husband/father” role. Without even thinking, I instantly evaluated her need for me and judged it unnecessary. I judged the process she used to find me as uncalled for. In my mind, she had acted thoughtlessly. Maybe it was my frustration with the tractor, maybe it was simply another opportunity for me to impress her with how important my role was, but I got angry with her for interrupting me. Sounds like I overreacted a bit, doesn’t it? But it seemed she deserved my anger at the time and I felt entitled to give it to her. Of course, she had no idea why I was so angry. She just felt mistreated. Why had I behaved that way? Because

I’d made fixing the tractor my priority. I’d made my role as “tractor fixer” more important than my mission. That allowed me to judge my wife’s needs and feel entitled to be angry with her for “unnecessarily” interrupting me. In the process I hurt her and did damage to our relationship. That wasn’t my goal, it wasn’t my intention, but that’s what I accomplished. Even though I want to give priority to my wife and my marriage at all times, it’s hard. Work, parenting, and life in general demand so much of us. But if performing my role as husband/father means getting angry with my wife when she interrupts my efforts at fixing the tractor, then my mission, my relationship with my wife, will be compromised. If I want to make my relationship with my wife my #1 priority at all times, then to accomplish that goal, I have to stay on mission. Whenever I put something else first, I will always be putting my wife second and fail in accomplishing my mission. This doesn’t mean I don’t fix the tractor. It does mean that when my wife calls, I’ll respond with tender words and a gentle tone consistent with my love, honor, and respect for her – even when her tone is unnecessarily urgent. The tractor can wait. It’ll still get fixed,

but maybe with an unplanned break to simply say, “Love you. See you later.” By the way, this doesn’t stop me from letting my wife know that she worried me when she called me the way she did. It also doesn’t stop me from sharing with her where I’ll be when I go out to fix the tractor so she won’t need to search for me. So, be willing to tell your husband that you want to make him your #1 mission again, that you’ve lost sight of him in your efforts to parent and run the household, and that you want to make some changes in your life. Share your perspective with him about your role - not about his - and about the impact performing your role is having on you. Believe it or not, you are both most likely motivated, in all that you do, by your love for each other. And remember, there’s nothing wrong with anything you’re doing, but it’s just not serving your relationship the way your relationship needs serving. Express your appreciation for all that your husband does. Refocus on your pre-marital mission – him. Of course, everything I’m suggesting goes for him, too. If you’re not happy in your relationship, then no matter how successful his career, no matter how hard he’s working, he’s not accomplishing his most important mission - you. Just don’t tell each other what to do. Share your respective thoughts and feelings, but let each decide what to do to complete the mission. And then appreciate the other’s efforts with the peace of knowing that you each are doing the best you can.

GumDrop Square (and Christmas) is just around the corner and the Partnership for Warrenton Foundation is making tremendous headway toward getting the old toy shop ready to welcome Santa and his elves. The tradition, which has become a highly anticipated annual to-do in Old Town Warrenton for much of the community, includes an Illumination Walk with Santa, the mayor and the elves, the Town of Warrenton Christmas tree lighting, Santa’s arrival at GumDrop Square, multiple open air musical and artistic performances, horse-drawn hayrides, nonprofit vendors, and of course the opportunity to visit with Santa, photo opportunities and the Secret Shop where children can purchase holiday gifts for loved ones with the help of Santa’s elves. GumDrop Square is open to the public for the first three weekends in December on Friday evenings and Saturday and Sunday mornings to early afternoon. The Partnership’s goal is to give the community a nostalgic, old fashioned Christmas tradition that is joyful, beautiful, memorable and as non-commercial as possible.

Anyone wishing to contribute to GumDrop Square is encouraged to reach out to the Partnership. Several various volunteer and donation opportunities are available. New this year, the Partnership has established an annual membership program whereby individuals and families or businesses can become members of the Partnership for Warrenton Foundation for a donation. Each level of membership has its own designated perks. Friends of the Partnership, which is the membership level attributed to individuals or families who contribute $50 or more to the Partnership for Warrenton Foundation will be allowed a special GumDrop Square privilege that has never before been allowed. Every Friend of the Partnership will receive a special invitation to attend a private party with Santa at GumDrop Square. That means no waiting out in the cold in long lines to see the Big Guy…and a tax writeoff for your charitable donation.

The Partnership for Warrenton Foundation and Interactive Marketing have come together to bring Old Town Warrenton shoppers a great new rewards program called Warrenton City MasterKey. The program allows patrons to present the card - the key to Warrenton - at any participating merchant and earn points on all of their purchases. The Warrenton City MasterKey card can be compared to reward cards at major retail chains, only this one card will be accepted at numerous businesses in and around Old Town Warrenton. Points are accumulated separately at each shop, restaurant or business and when the customer reaches the defined number of points they’ll earn a gift certificate toward more of the goods and services that they enjoy from that merchant. Fauquier Health New ENT Physician Joins Fauquier Heath

auquier Health is delighted to announce the addition of a new ear, nose and throat physician to its staff. With more than two decades of experience as an otolaryngologist, Jairo Torres, M.D. has treated a broad spectrum of conditions for both pediatric and adult patients, including ear infections (chronic otitis media), sinus problems, thyroid disorders, head and neck masses and sleep apnea. Prior to joining Fauquier Health, Dr. Torres was a private practice ENT physician specializing in pediatric services at Children’s Hospital Central California for two years. Prior to that, he was a private practice physician in Colombia for 16 years, where he served as a hospital medical director and an ENT clinic director. Board certified in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, Dr. Torres says it’s an exciting time in his field. “The recent advances in sinus surgery are very promising. And there are new techniques that can help patients avoid surgery, as well.” He explains that in the case of blocked sinuses, there is a procedure using a balloon that is inflated at the sinus opening to dilate the ostium, or sinus opening into the nose. Instead of a two- to three-hour surgery, it is a 15-minute procedure under general anesthesia. “It’s quick, less invasive and does not remove any tissue. It can be very effective. A lot of parents, for instance, would rather avoid surgery for their child if possible, especially since most kids outgrow sinus problems.”

Dr. Torres has come to Warrenton from central California and loves his new home. While he and his family are enjoying the small town feel of the area and the rolling vistas, Dr. Torres said that’s not what convinced him to move east. “I was very impressed with Fauquier Hospital’s Planetree philosophy, where the emphasis is on treating the whole patient.” Dr. Torres is a firm believer in family involvement, as well. From his own experience, he knows that when he includes loved ones in the treatment process, patients experience much better outcomes. After earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from University of the Valley Division of Health Sciences (Colombia) in 1983, Dr. Torres completed the University of the Valley Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Internship and Residency Program, and the Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio) Otolaryngology International Fellowship Program. At Case Western Reserve University, he also completed the General Surgery Residency Program in 2004, and the Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program in 2008.

2010 Warrenton Christmas Parade & “Season of Giving” Project

Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 10 AM Main Street, Old Town Warrenton Our theme this year is “Season of Giving” - Giving the gift of health. The parade is organized by WOW Fauquier, a local non-profit organization, whose purpose it is to bring women together in friendship, and in support of their community. “Season of Giving” Project:

In conjunction with the parade, WOW will be raising money for the Fauquier Free Clinic...giving those in need within our community, the gift of health. We are presently seeking parade and project sponsors, and will have WOW elves with big red Christmas stockings walking the parade route collecting voluntary cash donations. We have scheduled our first pre-parade fundraiser at Ledo Pizza in Warrenton on November 20th...Ledo will be donating 20% of the day’s proceeds to the “Season of Giving” Project.

Fauquier Free Clinic

Last year, even though the parade had to be cancelled, WOW Fauquier raised over $2100 for the Fauquier County Food Distribution Coalition. This year, we will be raising funds for the Fauquier Free Clinic, whose purpose is to provide primary health and dental care for local uninsured families. Volunteer doctors, nurses, dentists, and lay people donate their time and energy, but medications and medical supplies cost real money. The clinic is helping 50% more patients a month than just two years ago. Many of the patients at the Free Clinic have been surviving on unemployment benefits, but those benefits are expiring. To make matters worse, the clinic has seen a large decrease in donations due to the difficult economic climate. The clinic needs our support! In January of 1984, I saw Warrenton for the first time. I had grown up in a small town of 3,000 on the south shore of Long Island where one could not walk along Main Street without stopping to chat and, as the expression goes, everybody knew everybody. Warrenton was slightly larger but the atmosphere was almost identical. There were lovely homes on tree-lined streets, there were small independent stores, there were no traffic lights on Main Street and the residents did not exhibit the hurried appearance of the larger communities.

Prior to coming to Warrenton I had lived in Woodbridge and was a member of the Lions Club. Knowing the comradeship that exists among social club members, I asked for the names of members of the Warrenton Lions Club and was led to Bill Mayo who immediately took me under his wing. Very shortly I became a member and found myself twice monthly sharing dinner and stories at Ben and Mary’s. A member of the International Toastmasters Club for years, I formed the Warrenton Toastmasters. At that time I was a Research Psychologist with the U.S. Army Research Institute for Behavioral Sciences commuting to the District. Each workday evening I could not wait to get home (please note my use of the word “home.”) I had only lived in this area for three years and already my heart had been stolen.

I knew it immediately. I could feel it in my bones. I was 63 at the time and this is where I wanted to spend the remaining years of my life. In 1987 I received an invitation to a fiftieth year high school reunion after not having seen my former classmates for a half century. Although I enjoyed meeting them again, my home town was no longer there. I joined the Fauquier Chamber of Many apartment houses had been built; a Commerce, led at that time by Sally Murray, new highway had been constructed; motels later by Angela Smith, and currently by surrounded the community. This Southern town has been good to this Yankee. As we approach Thanksgiving, it is impossible for me to see it as just a holiday of family festivity. Thinking back through the past 26 years, I recognize that whatever talents I may possess were watered by the genuine friendship and love of real people. although I am still not sure how I arrived at this point. I had been invited to be at the home of my dear friend, Nancy Walbridge-O’Connell and her husband Jeff for a small dinner. Wondering why there were no cars in the driveway despite my arriving a bit late (they had been parked with a neighbor), I was led by Nancy through the garage, she opened the back door of the house and suddenly there were scores of people shouting “SURPRISE!” A welcoming glass of champagne – balloons – hugs by everyone – delicious food – a huge cake – a DJ playing dance-type music on the wraparound porch (yes, I danced) – and then the “piece de resistance,” two marvelous gifts that I will treasure until my death. One was a journal containing warm personal remarks by both those present and not present. The other was a bronze plaque containing the phrase “Keep your face toward the sunshine and the shadows will fall behind,” replicating a plaque which my mother had on my childhood wall.

A Postcard Perspective of Fauquier County An updated pictorial display & history of Fauquier County Commemorating the 250 year anniversary of Fauquier County and the 200 year anniversary of Warrenton, author Matthew Benson delivers an intriguing publication for collectors and gift-givers. His pictorial book, Fauquier County, is part of the Postcard History Series by Arcadia Publishing. It contains over 200 vintage images from what they claim to be the largest private collection of county postcards. Letters and emails do not capture the flavor of life like a postcard can. Postcards were a primary means of communication in the early 20th century, and these memories now preserve glimpses of the past through vintage images and intimate messages. Benson collected the images and wrote the book in hopes that his work “will bring back fond memories and inspire the telling of more colorful stories.” Benson regards the book as a gift “to the people of Fauquier County, especially those of old town Warrenton.” Sitting down and reading the book is both entertaining and educational. Fauquier County includes information about our Civil War history, the development of some of our villages and features a good dose of equestrian events and fox hunting. Chapter one begins, of course, with the Confederacy and John S. Mosby. Churches and Main Street are well documented. Joseph A. Jeffries, historian and former owner of Jeffries Drug Store contributes some rarely seen photographs. My favorite postcards and images are those of the motels, seen in their full, former glory. The Warren Green Hotel is a standout building, as it remains today while serving our County government. The dining establishments portray the eras they were photographed or drawn. The Chicken in the Rough at the Warrenton Motor Lodge is a story in itself. The restaurant served “disjointed chicken without utensils.” Postcard Perspective Continued on Page 54

Court House - After fires destroyed the earlier buildings of 1790, 1819 and 1854, this courthouse was built in 1890. Richard Henry Lee picked the site because it was the highest point in town. It contains portraits of Chief Justice John Marshall and Lord Francis Fauquier.

Matt Benson moved to southern Fauquier County in 2006, later relocating near Court House Square in Old Town Warrenton. As an Extension Specialist for Virginia Cooperative Extension, he worked with several organizations throughout Fauquier County including the Piedmont Environmental Council and Partnership for Warrenton. Currently, Benson is pursuing a PhD in agricultural education at Virginia Tech. 52

Chicken in the Rough - Chicken in the Rough was part of the Warrenton Motor Lodge and was located at the current site of Outback Steakhouse. The owner was Barney Harris, a prominent townsman.

A&B Restaurant - A & B Restaurant, located on the bypass, was known for specializing in seafood and other regional foods. It is currently the location of Foster’s Grille.

The Warren Green Buildling - The Warren Green Hotel was known to its guests as the “Little Waldorf” while others considered it more in the tradition of a true Virginia Inn. The site was originally home to the Norris Tavern which hosted notables as General Lafayette and Andrew Jackson. Teddy Roosevelt addressed the County from the balcony here in 1909. The Warren Green itself was built in 1875 and is now home to many Fauquier County government offices.

Hospice of the Rapidan Will Host Free Workshops on Coping With Grief During the Holiday Season Hospice of the Rapidan will offer free workshops for people who are grieving the loss of a family member, loved one or close friend this holiday season. The holidays can be especially difficult when dealing with the loss of a loved one. The program offers participants the opportunity to discuss their feelings, concerns, and questions with others who are going through similar experiences and to get assistance from Hospice of the Rapidan’s grief support team. All members of the public are welcome. Four workshops will be offered, two in Warrenton and two in Culpeper. The Warrenton workshops will be held on Thursday, November 18th and Thursday, November 2010

December 9th from 2:00 to 3:30 pm at the Warrenton-Fauquier County Visitor Center, 33N Calhoun Street. Workshops will be held on Tuesday, November 23rd and Tuesday, December 14th from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at Hospice of the Rapidan’s office, 1200 Sunset Lane, Suite 2320, Culpeper. Homeowner to Contractor: Under Control or Controlling Question:

Paul D of Warrenton asks, “My contractor is allowing me to do some of the work on my renovation. I am a Project Manager in the IT world and very detailed oriented. I am concerned that I might end up micro managing my own contractor. Can you provide any tips on how to avoid this?”

Answer:

Paul, this is a concern to both homeowners and contractors, especially in today’s economic environment. In general, when times are tough, people look for ways to save money. For a home construction project that often means the homeowner offers to do some of the work, select and purchase materials, supply their own subcontractors, etc. Contractors are more likely to suggest this option as well if it means their client will be able to complete a project under certain budget constraints. This type of arrangement is different than the standard turn -key construction contract. The opportunity for communication break downs and missing critical path milestones in the project production schedule greatly increase when there is not one particular party in charge. So, how to avoid this from happening? There are three simple rules to follow. Rule #1: Get it in writing. The owner and the contractor need to list their responsibilities in writing and its best that the vehicle for this is the Construction Contract. I have been involved as a mediator with many different contractors and homeowners and inevitably problems will arise when one of the parties say, “We talked about this…”, or “It was my understanding that this was included….”, but nothing was ever in writing. I have fallen into this situation myself with a client. Write down who is doing what in your contract. Remember that not completing certain assigned tasks (both by contractor and/or owner) can and usually does hurt the project financially…Definition: It will cost you more money! Rule #2: Communication is Key! When you both have deliverables to complete for the project, a weekly project meeting must take place so you can update each other on the project progress. If one of the parties is having problems completing a task, selecting a material or holding to a deadline, talk about it during your weekly meeting. If problems or obstacles are communicated, they can be overcome quickly without hurting the project or your owner/ contractor relationship. Rule #3: Don’t micro-manage your contractor! This is of course assuming you have done your homework when selecting your contractor, choosing the one best suited for you and your particular project with plenty of experience and capabilities. Homeowners in general are not home improvement experts. They don’t know the best material options, costing or building practices. ackie Hitchcock and her mother, Marylu Zurbuchen, had a dream of bringing their love for Cuban and Latin food to their own restaurant. The pair lived in both New York and Miami where Cuban restaurants are plentiful. Four years ago, Mojitos and Tapas came to life. Upon entering the restaurant, you will first note the well decorated dining room. It is always meticulously clean, just like the kitchen. If you come in near any holiday, Jackie will have the most festive seasonal ornaments putting you right in the spirit of the moment. Marylu may welcome you as a hostess and Jackie is everywhere, greeting customers, serving at the bar, supervising the kitchen and the wait staff. The restaurant excels because the owners are very hands-on. Jackie has created a menu that is a marriage of two cultures, signature Cuban dishes like Ropa Vieja and Arroz con Pollo with a classic Spanish Tapas menu featuring over 40 different appetizers. We frequent Mojitos and Tapas because the variety of the food will work with any appetite, lunch or dinner. Lunch specials begin at $7.99 and feature a large half-sandwich and soup or salad. We love the traditional Cuban sandwich, the Ropa Vieja (shredded beef), or our latest discovery, the Vaca Frita sandwich. The soups are always delicious and change daily while the salads taste garden fresh every time and are accompanied with a side of their home-made dressing. As an alternative to lunch, an after work social meeting or a unique romantic dinner idea, the Tapas menu canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be beat. Tapas, savory, bitesized appetizers, can be enjoyed with a

mojito or a glass of sangria. Start with the standard Manchengo cheese and Serano ham, the unique Fried Calamari and the Spanish Beef Empanadas. For the more adventurous palate, try the Morcilla (black sausage), Yucca Frita (fried cassava) or the Toston Relleno con Camaron (stuffed plantain w/shrimp). Whatever your choice of tapas, they are for sharing. Plan on lingering over dinner while enjoying a tapa, cocktail and one of the generous-portioned Cuban entrees. We recommend the Garlic Infused Roasted Chicken, the Arroz con Pollo, the Palomilla Steak, and the Spicy Rioja Monkfish. One of our favorite dishes is the delicious Pollo a la Milanesa, a breaded chicken breast with red sauce, ham and cheese. Our waitress, Maria, had recommended it (we often ask for a recommendation and have never been disappointed). There was even enough left over for a snack the next day.

The leaves are turning and the holidays are just around the corner. Things will be getting very busy for everyone with shopping and family celebrations. We should all remember to save ourselves time and hassle, by supporting our local businesses. We do not have any new businesses opening this month, but we do have some that have closed. The 7-11 on Broadview Ave, Quiznos by Outback, the Fauquier Urgent Care near the Giant and My Favorite Yarn Shop on Garrett Street, have all closed. A few things are moving and changing, as usual. The Secret Garden Salon has moved into a new space at 11 Main Street and you will no longer have to access them from the side street. The Chevron gas station across from Applebee’s is changing over to a Quest gas station. Rappahannock National Bank has been purchased and is now First Union Market Bank. The management of On The Run Sports, near Peebles, has been taken over by Dr. Keith Morneau. He has also expanded the inventory to include swimming accessories, soccer and wrestling equipment. He will soon have Lacrosse equipment also. Are you looking for a corporate/sports gift or award? He has them. I reported recently that the Town N Country Restaurant in New Baltimore had closed. Well I am excited to now report that it will open again. It was originally opened by Spyro Chakalos in

1971 and later sold in 1983. It will be returned to its original glory under the name of Northside 29 Family Restaurant, by the family of Spyro Chakalos. (Bill and Tracey Chakalos own and run Spitony’s restaurant nearby.) That original glory includes quality, service and a home style feeling with comfort food at its best, not from a box in a freezer. Using local vendors as much as possible, the Chakalos family will continue to be “locals supporting the community that supports them”. There will always be a family member at the restaurant and they will start by serving breakfast and lunch, with dinners to follow later. They will serve a menu of American Cuisine with daily specials, a better than your Momma section and value for everyone. There will also be photos on display and for sale as part of the new décor. The hope is to have the renovations completed and the restaurant open in early December. For all those who remember the original restaurant, this is very exciting news and I will be there on opening day!
