“In the construction industry we often refer to the build process as a rollercoaster ride. There are a lot of hills and valleys throughout a project’s life cycle. A good relationship with your contractor is the key to a successful project, and will guarantee that you are smiling when you get off the ride.” Tim Burch, CR President, Burch Builders Group President, National Association of the Remodeling Industry, METRO DC Chapter, 2008

CONTRIBUTING WRITERS : Jennifer Heyns Amy Griffin Amy Gable George Rowand Kathy Campbell & April Holmes Davi E. Couk, Jr. Dr. Robert B. Iadeluca

Dear Readers, Arriving home from an overseas trip, I was invigorated when I saw the mockup of this month’s issue. We have some great stories that I am certain you will enjoy. Note the extra emphasis on the women of our community—their creativity and leadership help make the Warrenton area unique. Jennifer Heyns leads off this issue with her Fall Fever story which showcases her ability to both personalize a story and offer a variety of family opportunities. Take a look at the incredible corn maze photograph and imagine how the owners managed to create it. Next, George Rowand delivers part one of an insightful look at one of Warrenton’s most brilliant couples, Katherine Neville and Karl Prihram. I had the privilege of listening to Ms. Neville speak at a Rotary meeting and was immediately engaged with her stories. She is releasing her latest book, The Fire, in October with an initial print run of over one million books. After you read Rowand’s article, find out more about Ms. Neville on her website, www.katherineneville.com. As a growing retirement community, Warrenton and Fauquier County host an array of services for seniors to assist families with the care of their loved ones. Kathy Campbell and April Holmes deliver a pointed story on how these programs have come to the aid of a couple of residents. Fauquier Health System has a complementary article that spotlights respite care. Amy Gable gives us the scoop in Old Town and Amy Griffin updates us on business movements in the area. Also, there is a well-deserved look at the accounting firm of Scheulen, Patchett and Edwards, P.C. Besides being voted Warrenton’s favorite three years running, this firm has shown exceptional community leadership and dedication during its 25 year history. We are grateful for their continued, unselfish contributions. David Couk, Jr. follows with his unique perspective on the financial markets and offers a few timely recommendations for investors. Susan McCorkindale’s new book, Confessions of a Counterfeit Farm Girl, is uncovered in Jennifer Heyn’s second feature of the month. If the book is anything like her blog, it should be quite entertaining and hilarious. Note the upcoming book signings at The Galloping Grape, Borders and Salon Emage. Dr. Robert Iadeluca dazzles us with another from-the-heart story that should motivate women everywhere to vote. Whether in writing or in person, Robby, as he is fondly referred to around town, always delivers an entertaining story with an inspirational message. Kind regards,

he very thing that happens to so many people when spring finally blooms happens to me when summer ebbs into autumn: I start to get fall fever. Ever since I was a little girl fall has been my favorite time of year. It began with going back to school. Beside the fact that I was one of the nerdy few who actually enjoyed school, fall was when I got to wear all of my new outfits, take crisp morning walks to the bus before getting back into the hustle and bustle of hallways jam-packed with all of the friends I hadn’t seen in months. As I got older (although I stopped doing that at the age of 29) I began to appreciate fall for much more mature reasons. Now my favorite season brings

6

the joy of watching my children don their new duds and greet their long-lost school chums. I can sit on the porch with a cup of steaming coffee enjoying the cool crisp autumn air and the bright changing colors of Mother Nature. I love the scent of the smoky sky as neighbors begin to fire up their wood stoves. And most importantly, I can finally get back to my favorite fashionable self in my sweaters, blue jeans and boots. Not only does the weather, and my wardrobe, change, but it seems that the attitudes in my family changes as well. We’re still laid back, not yet worried with all of the plans we need to make for the holidays, but we get very excited at the prospect of fall festivals, cool outdoor events and Halloween. My boys seem to revert back to the sweet babes I once knew them to be, asking for collaboration on making their own unique costumes and coming up with crazy and creative ideas to make them scary or wild. The cool weather just screams for me to start redecorating my home. Once the initial shock of sifting through my hoards of boxes in the basement abates, I retrieve my pinecone and acorn door wreathes, leaf candles and fall-colored tablecloths and linens. The boys like to help me hang all of our pumpkins, skeletons, spiders and ghosts around the house in the hopes that Daddy might jump when he first discovers our ghastly new décor.

As fond as I am of fall, however, what’s even better is the experience of fall living in Fauquier County. There are so many events that take place in our county in the fall that have become tradition for my family. We may be busy with back to school, sprinting hither, thither and yon for sports and errantly running errands, but there’s always time to take in a few fun family adventures. One of our favorite family traditions is our annual visit to The Corn Maze in The Plains where we answer themed questions to try to make our way from entrance to exit with as few U-turns as possible - not an easy feat. Then the kids play in their “barnyard of fun” and we take a relaxing hayride through the acreage trying to spot the wildlife that meanders through occasionally. On the way out, there’s an entire barn filled with farm-made goodies and corn maze souvenirs that we just can’t help but check out, typically taking way too much home with us. For those of you who think you could do it blindfolded and need more of a challenge, try their Moonlight Nighttime Mazes. (www. circleofseeds.com or (540) 456-7339) Just as much fun is the Corn Maze at Cows-N-Corn in Midland. This year’s maze theme is Virginia is for Lovers - the aerial view of the maze is, well, amazing. Aside from the corn maze, guests can enjoy the play pasture, hand-dipped ice cream, homemade cheeses, and see firsthand what a working dairy farm looks like. Cows-N-Corn will also be hosting Hillbilly Haunted Hay Rides on the weekends, starting on the 17th, a haunted barn and pumpkin picking. (www.cows-n-corn.com or 540-4394806) Another fall activity we always enjoy Fall Fever Continued page 8 Warrenton Lifestyle

is the Fauquier County Fall Farm Tour. We love visiting the different farms, seeing the animals and sampling the goodies that distinguishes each farm as it’s own unique attraction. Last year my boys were bestowed the honor of helping the Lanes make the day a success at their Alpaca Full Moon Farm. They had so much fun with the animals, the food, the games and all of the visitors. This year the farm tour will be held on Saturday, October 11 and will feature the southern end of the county and will have stops at a dairy farm, a lavender farm (imagine how great that place must smell!), an Alpaca farm, an equestrian center and a historic farm that is home to hounds of the Casanova Hunt. (www.fauquiercounty.gov/government/ departments/agdev/ or 540-349-5314) This year my boys have decided that they have to have the most awesome costumes known to man, but…they’re too old to go trick-or-treating. Not ready to give up all of the fun and fright of a good Halloween night, I decided to grow my own pumpkin patch so that the kids could invite their friends to come for a haunted hike through the woods and end the evening picking and carving their own pumpkins. Mother Nature decided I should make other plans and I watched my poor plants wither and die.

And what would October be if it didn’t end with trick-or-treating? So what if my kids are too old, I’m not. Also on the 25th, the Town is hosting their annual Halloween Parade and Trick or Treating. Children of every age are invited to dress up and parade down Main Street to show-off their scary, darling and inventive costumes. Following the parade there will be trick-or-treating at the shops along Main. I already know which events I’m going to, but what I can’t decide is - do I have to wait until the kids get home from school to go? 10

T

he couple, Katherine Neville and Karl Prihram, have lived all over. He was born in Vienna, Austria, is a college professor who taught at Yale, Stanford, Radford and at Georgetown, and has been titled, “The Magellan of the Brain” for his research into brain functions. She is an author with a new book coming out in October who has lived in more than half the states in America, as well as six countries on three continents. Now they’re both residents of Warrenton, and Warrenton Lifestyles will be exploring the professional lives of these two exceptional people in the next two months. We will start with Katherine Neville. The writer Katherine Neville was typing furiously on her computer late one afternoon last December as the shadows lengthened and the temperature began to drop. She was on a mission. “I have to get this into the overnight mail,” she explained as she bundled up for a trip to the post office in Warrenton. “My publisher wants me to send them pages every day, and I have 15 minutes before the post office closes to get this out.” The pages she was working on have become part of her latest book, titled “The Fire,” which debuts in October. It will join her other books, The Eight, A Calculated Risk, and The Magic Circle, which have been printed in over 30 languages, and which have sold millions of copies, to critical acclaim. In fact, The Eight was voted one of the top ten books of all time in one poll in Spain. The Fire – a sequel to that book – picks up that story line and carries it forward. “I got the idea for The Fire in 1992, and I seriously started working on it before 2001,” she related. “But I changed 12

everything when the planes hit the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. My apartment was right across the street from the Pentagon. My neighbors could see the smoke from the Pentagon.” Neville has an extensive background and interest in the Middle East. “I used to work for OPEC,” she

Author, Katherine Neville explained. “I worked for the Algerian government from 1972, and the oil embargo started about six months after I started. My company in America got an assignment, and I went there because I could speak French and English. There were a lot of job requirements, and I was the only woman that met them all. “I worked on the pipeline project in Algeria,” she continued. “They thought that they would run out of oil, but then they found the world’s largest strike of natural gas. The pipeline went under the Mediterranean, and into Italy. I was there for quite awhile.” It was that first-hand, boots-onthe-ground experience that changed her viewpoint about the future of

the world. “When OPEC did the oil embargo – they called it a boycott – I realized that there was a third future staring at us,” she said. “There was the West, there were the Communists, and because of oil, all these Middle Eastern cultures were going to have economic clout. It reminded me of the French Revolution because it rearranged the power structure. It put power into the hands of the little people, and it also changed the governments. I saw OPEC having that kind of impact.” Neville has had a variety of careers. She was an international computer executive and consultant, principally in the fields of finance and energy. She also has been a commercial photographer, a portrait painter, busboy, waiter, and model. For an author, it seems, everything that happens in one’s life becomes grist for the mill. Born in Missouri, the peripatetic Neville went to school there as well. “They called me ‘The Sponge,’ because I could absorb so much,” she said. Her connections extend in an unlikely way to the likes of Stephen King, Dave Barry, Amy Tan and other famous authors. “Dave Barry, Stephen King and Amy Tan have this rock and roll band called ‘The Rock Bottom Remainders,’ and I was invited to play piano in it,” Neville said, “but I was living in San Francisco, coming to D.C., and they had to rehearse constantly, so I couldn’t. They used to play at book trade shows, but now I think that they perform in other places.” Always artistically talented, it seems, it was while working in New York City that she got some insight into how she Katherine Neville Continued page 14 Warrenton Lifestyle

wanted to write. “I went to New York City and worked for 5 years, and I started going to night classes at different colleges, she said. “I got interested in African literature, and I discovered that that was the structure I was looking for in a novel. The writers of African descent were writing the way I wanted to write. I think that it’s because they had an oral tradition, and that we had lost our roots somehow. That really interested me, and I figured it out within one year. The earlier results are there for all to see, and the latest book promises to push her career even farther. The book The 9/11 attacks on American soil led her to change the book she initially had in mind. “After the planes hit the Twin Towers, I said to Karl, ‘Are we at war?’ she recalled. “We walked home, walked into the house, and they said that a plane had hit the Pentagon, and I thought, ‘the book I’m writing is not the book I should be writing.’ Neville said that it took awhile for her to process the impact of the attacks, on the country and on the book that she had in mind. “I waited two years, she said, “and then I started writing it again, and I started writing it with the same characters, same plot, but the other ingredients were new. It begins with the Turks trying to capture the Ali Pasha, the most powerful of the Turkish pashas that the Ottoman Sultan set up across the world. They set up fiefdoms and client rulers, and they ran it on behalf of the Ottoman Empire. “Ali [living in what is now Albania in the early 1800s] was the most powerful pasha, and he thought 14

day they come to get him is the day my book begins. Ali Pasha has to smuggle out a very important article so that it doesn’t fall into the hands of the Turks. The item goes back 1000 years to the original founding of Baghdad. And the game has begun again. So the novel is historical and up to date at the same time. It features elements of The Eight, which was printed almost two decades ago. “It goes back and forth in history, but it’s mainly about the children of the Moslem leader, and they’re now grown up and they know nothing about the game, Neville said. “I was writing the story and I did not realize how ultimately it was going to be connected to the chess set that ended Katherine Neville Continued page 16 Warrenton LifestyLe

HAVING MORE RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS Many investors won’t put all their retirement savings at a single broker because they believe it’s far too risky. Actually, there may be more risk in having multiple accounts. Without a single focus, it can be difficult to keep track of your investments and to see if you’re properly diversified.* At the very least, multiple accounts usually mean multiple fees. up with Charlemagne.” The book’s settings move around extensively. “It’s set in D.C., Russia, Colorado, Alaska, and in historical places in Albania, Morocco, Rome, the south of France,” Neville explained. “The director of antiquities of Albania helped me a lot. I got a lot of Albanian research that has never been published. The scenes set in D.C. are in very unusual spots. There’s nothing on the Mall, nothing at the Capitol. They are mysterious places. I lived there. I’ve owned a place in Georgetown for 12 years, and I’ve walked everything between Georgetown and American University. There are a lot of unusually interesting places there.” Writers of fiction often say that the characters they invent often start to take over the book and take it into places that weren’t originally planned. It was that way with The Fire. “This book was different,” Neville said. “It literally yanked itself out of my hands. It changed itself into something different. I was surprised every week. I created characters who actually exist. “I think that the one important thing to remember, if you’re an author,” Neville continued, “is if a good idea falls off the shelf, you have to follow it. And some of mine for this book range from the U.S. Treasury to a child chess prodigy. No matter what, you have to follow the idea.” She said that what she was writing in the book, and what was going on in real life often overlapped in an incredible way. “I worked on the book for five years,” she said. “Once I got the background material with what I had invented, current events caught up with my plot, and with what I was writing. I would call my editor and tell him about an event that just happened, and say, ‘That’s in my book!’ and he’d say, ‘Get out of here!’ He said that a lot.” The coincidences extended further. “The Fire takes place in 2003, so 9/11 is understood, but we realized that the day the book began is the day that American troops went into Baghdad, 16

and Baghdad ultimately is connected to the great game.” Neville recounted the local spots that play a part in the ovezall story. “The book goes from Mt. Vernon to Maryland, and there are little known things about ancient rituals and sacred spots,” she said. “My acknowledgment section is flabbergasting. I had so much material that I couldn’t use, but that I’ll be able to talk about it on book tour.” Ah, the book tour. The bane of some author’s existence. The tour for The Fire will be extensive. “We’re going to launch the book in Washington, D.C., which is very unusual,” she explained. “Most of the time they’re launched in New York or California, and I can’t think of a book – except a political book – that has been launched in D.C. The date is October 14, and we’re having a party at a secret location right in the area where part of the book takes place.”

WEDNESDAY MARKET Now thru Oct. 29 Time: 7 am - 1 pm Branch Street Rear Parking Lot of the Warrenton Shopping Center located at 251 W. Lee Highway.

After that, it’s off on the tour. Right now, that includes 18 separate flights – something Neville doesn’t relish – including a trip to Spain. And there is talk of a movie or two about the twinned books. “There have been many options for doing The Eight as a movie here and in Europe,” Neville said, “but we will do these two together. If you try to do one, you’re cheating everyone. I’ve worked with some of the top screenwriters, but you’ve got to know which thread to pull out so that the whole tapestry doesn’t falter.” Katherine Neville’s newest book, The Fire will debut on October 14, 2008. The publisher is Ballantine Books, and the book will be available at local bookstores and on-line at numerous sites. George Rowand is the author of “Diary of a Dream: My Journey in Thoroughbred Racing.”

f you are one of the many people within our community caring for a loved one who is disabled or ill, you are not alone. Recent surveys have revealed that 80% of older adults in the region who need care receive that care from their families. Family caregivers are an often invisible, yet vital part of long term care system and community support for older adults. Family caregivers face common problems and similar situations. Some of the most critical challenges are: Avoiding “burn-out,” loosely defined as spending so much time and effort tending to others’ needs that the caregiver becomes emotionally, mentally, and physically depleted. Learning about community resources, financial assistance programs, caregiver training, and other available services. Coping with day-to-day events and managing various stages of care. Depending on your situation, you may be adapting to the reversed role of caring for a parent or trying to deal effectively with a loved one who is reluctant to loose independence or even uncooperative. Connecting with others including medical and caregiving professionals, families, friends, and neighbors. Learning about solutions to common problems. Staying healthy and thriving in the midst of a stressful lifestyle. How to manage all this? We can learn a lot from those who have been there. Here is how one caregiver coped, one story among the many in our region:

“It was tough not knowing what was going on and what to do about it.” In 1990 Bill Werre’s wife was experiencing symptoms which at that time were diagnosed as Parkinson’s disease. The problem is that there were other symptoms that didn’t fit that pattern. It wasn’t until 1995, about the time Charlotte Werre was no longer able to walk, that the National Institutes 18

of Health diagnosed the disease as Multiple Systems Atrophy, or MSA. This is one of several Parkinson’s Plus disorders. Its symptoms, ranging from loss of motor control to autonomic failure (which affects blood pressure and body temperature), make it challenging to diagnose. “It was tough,” says Bill, “not knowing what was going on and what to do about it. Some things about this disorder are critical to know, like keeping the person hydrated I just kept harassing people to get information and help.” Another dilemma for Bill was how to find care for Charlotte so that he could return to work. He had retired in 1995 but soon after started working again at George Washington University. The closest adult daycare program would not accept his wife because she needed to recline for several hours every day due to blood pressure problems. Finally through the help of the public health nurse Bill found someone who could care for her 3 times a week. To add to these challenges, he required heart surgery in 1996. Fortunately his daughters lived nearby and were able to help with their mother’s care. Although Bill Werre pictured here with a handicap accessible van. physically devastated by MSA, Charlotte was mentally alert and able to communicate almost to the end of her life. When she could still use her hands, Bill remembers, she played Hearts on the computer using the mouse, even though it took hours. By 1998 she required a feeding tube and that meant that Eldercare Continued page 20 Warrenton LifestyLe

Bill would need to provide care for the feeding tube site, as well as other personal care. “I couldn’t even stand the sight of blood,” he says, “then I found myself working with a peg tube. You find out that you can do a lot of things you thought you couldn’t.” Another issue was helping Charlotte get to appointments after her mobility was so impaired. If he could get help getting her down the steps and into the car he could manage, but she needed lifting and carrying. He had to ask the Fairfax County Fire Department to help carry her in and out of the house. Eventually Bill purchased a stair lift so that she would not have to be carried. He also purchased other adaptive equipment, such as a lift to help her get in and out of the bath. Medicare paid for this durable medical equipment. Although Charlotte was only 55 when she had to stop working, she was eligible for SSDI, Social Security benefits for people no longer able to earn “gainful employment” due to disability. It

took time and persistence to get this financial resource and Medicare, but it was worth the effort. He never doubted that he wanted to take care of her. “I loved my wife. It’s part of the marriage to take care of her.” There were several times when he doubted that he could do it, however. These are the times that having support from others plays such an important role. When Charlotte died peacefully in 2001 Bill was prepared, having known that with her fragile medical condition she could go at any time. He still grieved for her, and found it tough to adjust to the change: “I’d been caring for her 24/7 and now I had nothing to do.” But eventually he did return to full engagement in his life. He has remarried and is an active volunteer with his church, VolTran volunteer transportation program, Aging Together, and supporting other families going through the same thing. What helped him manage during those years of struggling to get a clear diagnosis, looking for help, managing hands-on

Juggling work and caregiving is increasingly common throughout the country. It is estimated that nationwide almost $36 million is lost in productivity due to the challenges facing family caregivers.

Anxiety comes in many forms. Panic Attacks express themselves as palpitations, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath or a chest pain. Another form is OCD where the sufferer has uncontrollable obsessions and compulsions such as thoughts about contamination, an extreme need for orderliness or persistent doubts whether an important action had taken place. Social phobia is characterized by an intense fear of situations where embarrassment might occur, e.g. public speaking. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder might occur after a serious accident, a criminal assault, or a natural disaster. In all cases while medication might stabilize the patient, psychotherapy has been shown to be a highly effective treatment.

care, and having to witness his wife’s deterioration? Many important supports came from Bill’s connecting with others: His family made a big difference, sharing the care and supporting him and Charlotte. Also, he took the initiative in finding information and resources: “I was able to find others dealing with the same or similar diseases, especially through the internet,’ he recalls. “It’s been like an on-line support group.” He’s become an expert in gathering needed information and can show you a notebook full of important information on MSA and related disorders. A grief support group was also very helpful. He and Charlotte started attending one group in 1996, to help them cope with the losses they were both experiencing. Another help was getting involved to help others: He found an outlet by joining the National Caregiver Alliance and serving on a task group on discharge planning. What did he learn from this experience that he can share in advice to other family caregivers? “The Internet is a good source of information and support. I found web sites about these disorders to be very helpful. “Learn about resources and know your rights. When you want to apply for Medicare, don’t call – file for it – because file date determines when benefits begin. “Support groups, including grief support, can really help.” All in all, what did the experience of caregiving do for him? “It changed my outlook on life,” he says. “I learned that government can’t take care of everything, but volunteers can’t either. It has to be a mix.” It is clear from this example that family caregivers need and deserve support. As Bill learned, caregivers need to know where to get help, how to cope with emotions, often how to provide hands-on care, and how to take care of themselves. Fortunately there is a series of classes for family caregivers that will address just these topics. 22

Two Aging Together partners, Fauquier Hospital and Roberts Home Medical, have teamed up to offer a series of workshops for family caregivers on October 30 in the Sycamore Room at Fauquier hospital. These workshops will run from 1:00-5:00 pm. Participants can attend as many as they choose. The topics are: General Caregiving skills, Home Safety, Community Resources and Caring for the Caregiver. O

ne of the most exciting days of my vicarious life is quickly approaching. On October 7 Confessions of a Counterfeit Farm Girl graces the shelves of Borders and other fabulous bookstores across the nation and its author, Susan McCorkindale, is a Fauquier County gem and one of my dearest friends. In fact, not only is she a local and personal treasure, her book is all about her experiences learning how to live the country lifestyle right here in our fair county. She moved to rural Upperville about three and a half years ago after spending half a lifetime and a glamorous career in the very bustling metropolises of New Jersey and New York, leading her to believe (at least at first) that she could only be, at best, a farmer faker. Her book is 350 pages of fall-down-funny anecdotes of her adventures on the 500-acre cattle farm she and her family now run. It’s hard to explain without giving it all away, but Susan’s sense of humor is as divine on paper as it is in person. Her style is unique and elevating and can best be described as Nora Ephron, only closer to home. I remember when she first moved here, she looked rather frightened and pale - I believe she was in a state of shock for the first several months. She gave up a high-powered executive position with a national magazine to move to “the sticks” with her husband and two sons. Not only did she give up her career, but she also left behind 26

her extended family, dear friends and a lifestyle never to be duplicated here. What she gained, however, was a new set of friends, a completely new set of skills including how to wrangle cattle, gather chickens and navigate cow pies in pumps, not to mention some much needed daily exposure to the sun. I can recall several outings with our friends - and to be sure, we are a raucous group (proof in chapter 37) -

having a grand time, laughing all the while and Susan would suddenly shout, “Stop - I have to write this down!” And she would. As I sped through Confessions,

poring over every page, it was like reliving the first couple of years of knowing Susan, but this time I get to see what she was thinking during her trials and tribulations on the farm. And I have to tell you, she is a riot both outwardly and inwardly. Confessions begins with an accounting of what Susan’s life was like in New Jersey, with her crazy hectic commute to her hoity-toity job in New York. She had quite the life up north. Although I must admit, it sounded like she was involved in just as many shenanigans up there as she is down here. It turns out, though, that as suited as she was for the fastpaced city life of power lunches, ad deadlines and marketing programs, it just didn’t suit her, despite her penchant for looking pretty in haute couture pinstripes. All burnt out and nowhere to go, Susan’s husband convinced her to pack up the Durango and head south in the winter of 2005, where the couple agreed to live on and manage her brother-in-law’s cattle farm. Something she never in her wildest dreams expected she would be doing….something she never expected she would continue to do even after she got here. Now that she has been properly embedded into our community and culture she admits that she has found Farm Girl continued on page 28 Warrenton Lifestyle

No. No. Mrs. McCorkindale has her eye on one Mark Wahlberg. Although I have no doubt that every Hollywood studio will be fighting over the rights to Susan’s book, I know there’s no way anyone could say what she has to say any better than she can. And, I may be a little biased, but I think everyone should go buy the book - one for yourself, one for your sister, your mom, your co-workers, your cousins, your friends. But I digress, to put it as Susan would. Now, for the really important matter: in Confessions - The Movie, who will play me? Bear Markets Can Equal Blue Light Specials

Legends Catering

by David E. Couk, Jr.

With the financial press howling about the official arrival of another bear market, it’s essential that investors know exactly what this means in order to make effective and appropriate choices. Technically, a bear market is nothing more than a financial market decline of 20% from the previous market high, and in most instances the S&P 500 Index is used as a proxy for the U.S. stock market. Since World War II, there have been twelve such declines (before this one); a half dozen of which ultimately took the index down much more than 20%. As measured from peak to trough, the mean decline has been about 25%; with the worst decline (3/24/00-10/9/02) measuring a painful 49.1%. The average duration of these declines has been between 13-14 months; although taking out the two monster bear markets of 197374 & 2000-02 shrinks the average to a more modest duration of 10 months. With the S&P 500 Index having last peaked in early October of 2007, the index’s’ July 15th 2008 close had taken it down over 23%. While the stock market recovered modestly from these lows, we are now more than 11 months removed from the last peak. If one considers the average declines and durations, along with the fact that just eight years ago we experienced one of the worst declines of all time, it’s difficult to think we are not at least closer to a market bottom than a market top. In fact, on July 15th of this year, the New York Stock Exchange saw the greatest number of new 52-week lows ever recorded (records going back to 1980) at an incredible 1,304. Historically these types of occurrences are suggestive of capitulation selling in stocks, and are typically an early indication of a bottoming process. Of the top ten similar instances (all of which exceeded 900+ stocks), the average three & six month returns for the stock market have been favorably positive.

Local Organization That Works With Those Who Are Ill, Dying, And Bereaved Featured In National Publication Spiritual Care Support Ministries SM (SCSM) Featured in Charisma Magazine WARRENTON, Va., September 5, 2008—Spiritual Care Support MinistriesSM (SCSM), a local organization founded by Rev. Liz Danielsen that is devoted to providing support, education, and a biblical perspective to those who are ill, dying, bereaved and those who journey with them, was featured in the September issue of Charisma Magazine. SCSM serves several hundred people annually free or charge through bereavement support groups and specialized groups for parents, spouses, children, and the chronically ill. “We are honored to be recognized and grateful that the needs of those who are ill, dying, and bereaved are receiving national attention,” said Danielsen. “It is our sincere hope that through this article, individuals will reach out to get the help and support they need and that others will be moved to volunteer their time to this important cause.” The seeds for SCSM were planted in 1984. While standing at her dying mother’s bedside, Danielsen overheard hospital patients crying to God. “There were no chaplains on duty and the hospital staff did not want to bother local ministers late at night,” explains Danielsen. “I wanted to help.” Danielsen took a class for hospital volunteers and enrolled in a formal chaplaincy training program. She worked in a hospital and hospice care before earning her ministerial credentials with the Assemblies of God and becoming a health-care chaplain. She hopes to one day establish a national and international resource center that provides ministry, training, and retreat for the ill, dying, and bereaved. A full calendar of fall and winter classes and events is available at www.scsm.tv or by contacting the Center at 540/349-5814. The Center is located 76 W. Shirley Avenue in Warrenton, Virginia.

What Gives You the Right by Dr. Robert B. Iadeluca

M

y mother was not allowed to vote until after I was born. My birth, of course, had nothing to do with her privileges as a citizen. She was a loyal American and would have done so earlier if this privilege had been available to her. Such was not the case, however, until the passing of the Twentieth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution in 1920. I was born in September of that year and she voted for the first time in November, two months later. Ever the loyal American, despite the fact that she and all women were denied voting privileges, she had volunteered her services at a military hospital where she met my father, a

disabled World War I veteran back from combat in France. Throughout their married life until her death in 1930, she was active in the American Legion Auxiliary and spent much of her time composing patriotic poems and essays for publication in various periodicals. These literary pieces were almost always about veterans, their sacrifices for their nation, and her love for this country. From 1920 on, she voted in every single election. She was acutely aware that this privilege which had been withheld from all women for 144 years was not to be taken lightly. My mother was an independentminded forward-looking woman. She was, in many ways, far ahead of the feminist revolution which occurred in

the 1960s. She was not only a prolific writer, she was an avid reader, keeping up on current events. She was active in the school and church community. If her health had permitted her, in my opinion she would have been considered what is nowadays called an “activist.” One of her heroines was Susan B. Anthony who, along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, founded in 1866 the American Equal Rights Association. They published a newspaper called The Revolution which had a masthead saying: “Men, their rights and nothing more; women, their rights and nothing less.” Anthony, as the expression goes, “walked the walk.” Along with a number of other women, she was arrested in Rochester in 1872 for voting. Fighting to the last ditch what she considered inequality, she refused See Voting on Page 43

to pay bail. Her lawyer paid the bail, this keeping her case from the Supreme Court. She was indicted in Albany but the Rochester District Attorney, seeing the handwriting on the wall, asked for a change in venue because a jury might be prejudiced in her favor. At her trial the judge instructed the jury to find her guilty without discussion but did not imprison her when she refused to pay, this denying her the chance to appeal.  She dedicated her life to woman suffrage. As a delegate to the National Labor Congress, she persuaded the committee on female labor to call for votes for women and equal pay for equal work, although the men at the conference deleted the reference to the vote. Later she spoke before the New York State teachers’ convention at Troy, and at the Massachusetts teachers convention, arguing for coeducation and claiming there were no differences between the minds of men and women. She became president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association in 1892, the year of my mother’s birth. Susan B. Anthony died in 1906 and although it took fourteen more years for popular opinion to catch up with her, she paved the way to the voting booth for all women now preparing to cast their ballots on November 4th. In 1978 President Jimmy Carter signed the Susan B. Anthony Coin Act into law. She was the first woman to be honored by having her likeness appear on a circulating United States coin.  We are now witnessing a historical presidential campaign. The 2008 race has many firsts – a woman, an African-American, and for the first time in 80 years neither a sitting president nor vice president is seeking the presidency. For the first time in the history of the United States, we have a woman Speaker of the House. Women of all political persuasions are extremely excited. However, research has indicated that there is no such thing as a feminine monolithic vote. Women do not necessarily vote for women nor are they single issue voters. They consider numerous ideas, issues, and ideologies.  Traditionally women were thought to gravitate toward domestic issues such as health care and education while men were thought to be concerned primarily about war and the economy. Since 2002 this no longer applies. While health and education continue to occupy their concerns, equality in the business world and raising the minimum wage are moving toward the forefront. Almost half of the women voters surveyed stated that having more women in public office would change the situation in Washington.  Over the past 25 years, the gender gap has become a defining feature of our American elections. However, even within the feminine vote there are further divisions and categories. When speaking of the “woman vote, of whom do we speak? Are we referring to women entreprenours who own approximately 10 million firms? Unmarried women See Voting on Page 44 October 2008

who are delaying marriage? The increasing number of women who are having children beyond the traditional childbearing years? Junior-Seniors aged 50 to 64, many with children living at home? Each category has its own specific interest. The grandmother sees the occupant of the Oval Office through different eyes from the married mother of two young children. The blue collar? The white collar? Â When I was born, the population, according to the U.S. Census was 106 million. When I became old enough to vote, the population had grown to 133 million, not too great a growth. Now that I am 88 it has exploded to approximately 300 million and the population of women slightly exceeds that of men. I submit, however, that the significant figure is not the total population of women but the percentage of that population who vote. According to the census, in the 2004 presidential election, more than half of women between the age of 18 and 24 did not vote.compared to only 29 percent of women aged 65 to 74 who did not vote. The reasons for the smaller vote in the younger group? They cited illness or disability, too busy or a scheduling conflict, lack of interest, and not liking the candidates or the campaign issues. Â The Twenty Sixth Amendment of the United States Constitution , ratified on July 1, 1971, standardized the voting age to 18. This was the era of the Vietnam War when the rallying cry was that anyone old enough to fight should be old enough to vote. The percentage of women in the military was increasing. Now we are engaged in a different war and the increase of women soldiers has grown exponentially. Nevertheless, as indicated above, the majority of those women in that age group did not vote in the last presidential election. In that same election 20 million single women did not vote. Â This is a highly significant group. In the last 20 years the number of single women living on their own has skyrocketed 87 percent. Reasons? Warrenton Lifestyle

Delayed marriage, steady divorce rates, and wives outliving husbands. Threefourths of them are over 35, the largest group by far being baby boomers, many of whom are on the eve of their 60th birthday. Research shows their prime concerns to be economic insecurity, the sense that they are “out there all alone. More than half of all single women earn less than $30,000 annually. They are less likely to own their own homes and, as the only breadwinners, are more likely to be working full time. There are 48 million unmarried women in America today.  My mother and Susan B. Anthony would have been both pleased and concerned. Pleased at the political awakening of American women but concerned that “talking the talk may not be sufficient to move this republic into a healthy direction. Ms. Anthony traveled, lectured, and canvassed across the nation despite constant opposition and abuse. My mother, despite a painful illness, wrote and had published numerous articles urging her readers to exercise their rights.  Will today’s women “walk the walk by registering and voting? Leaves are starting to turn to the beautiful colors of fall and our thoughts will soon be turning to the holidays. When we need to find gifts, feed a crowd or update the look of our homes, we have a wonderful community of businesses to help us with all of those needs. And shopping with local merchants saves us both time and a great deal of gas. Two new businesses have recently opened in Warrenton. The Law Office of Jonathan P. Lienhard has opened on Culpeper Street specializing in business law, criminal law, federal law and litigation. In addition, Secrets Salon has opened on Keith Street ready to give you a new look. Fortunately we have not had any businesses close this month, but we definitely have some on the move. Old Town Athletic Club has finally moved into their new space on Walker Drive and had a grand opening to show off their beautiful new facility. Horizon Real Estate has moved its relatively young business from North Fifth Street to a new space at 211 Broadview Avenue. Earth Glaze & Fire, a long time fixture in the Warrenton Village Shopping Center will be moving to Main Street. They will be located in the rear portion of the building that once housed the Town Duck and will be having their grand opening on October 4th & 5th. Stop by to visit them in the new space and wish owner Jo Brabson good luck. Bare Woods has changed its name to Real Woods & Home Furnishings. They hope it will make it easier for people to understand what they really do. I can tell you from personal experience that it is the best place to get solid wood furniture that will last a lifetime. You can finish it yourself or have them finish it to just the right color to fit your home. It will save you a lot of time running around to locate that one piece, because they can get just about anything that you could want. Warrenton Jewelers is coming to the Warrenton Village Shopping Center in early October. They will have a large variety of jewelry in all price ranges, along with custom pieces and a full service jewelry repair shop to handle all your needs. The new Oak Hill National Bank is headquartered in Marshall, but will be opening a branch in the old McMichaels building on Broadview Avenue. 46

It is a new bank that has been started by a lot of familiar faces from the old Marshall National Bank, because they did not want to see the personal attentions of a community bank disappear. We have two other businesses opening; Neibauer Dental will be moving into a space near Borders and an Indoor Tennis Center is being built at the intersection of Oak Springs and Broadview. Owner Jack Schore says the new tennis facility will be ready in November. Amy Griffin is the owner of inFauquier.com, the most comprehensive online directory of consumer businesses located in Fauquier County.
