This is the second in a series of guest columns from local educators. The purpose is to introduce the public to the distinct features of each school and describe their curriculum, philosophy and atmosphere. We believe that parents know what system will work best for each individual child. This month, Karen Parkinson discusses Fauquier County Public Schools. Future columns will bring you Christian, Classical, Private, Catholic, etc.

Fauquier County began a promising journey toward what Thomas Jefferson referred to as “the education of the common people” when public schools first opened here in 1871, and within one year, 57 small school buildings dotted the county’s rural landscape with 2,500 students enrolled. Fast forward 137 years – to 2009. With still-strong support from local government and citizens, Fauquier County Public Schools continues to answer Thomas Jefferson’s charge – educating more than 11,200 children in 20 schools across the county. Fauquier is a county committed to education. Dedication and pride are hallmarks of our public schools – from the newest to the oldest – as devoted faculty and support staff give their best every day to help children learn and succeed. The school system seeks to educate students in the knowledge, skills and values necessary to become self-sustaining and productive members of a democracy. Fauquier County Public Schools provide opportunities and resources to help individual students from the pre-kindergarten level through 12th grade attain the highest level of achievement for which they are capable. With the opening of two new schools last year, FCPS consists of three high schools, five middle schools, one

alternative education school (which encompasses an adult education program), and 11 elementary schools. All of the county’s public schools are fully accredited, meeting the Commonwealth of Virginia’s rigorous Standards of Learning pass rates. The school division’s academic program is diverse, farreaching and comprehensive, offering a wide range of differentiated services and programs in general education, special education, gifted education, career and technical education, and higher education (advanced placement and dual enrollment). High school students have the opportunity to study college-level courses in high school and to participate in a dual-enrollment program with Lord Fairfax Community College. Students in Southeastern Alternative School work in small groups, participating in project-based units and computerassisted learning activities. In addition, Fauquier County Public Schools is one of seven public school divisions served by Mountain Vista Governor’s School, a research-based, academic-year governor’s school for math, science and the humanities. Fauquier County school experiences have prepared him for a great future; in addition to FHS, Damien attended Smith and Brumfield Elementary Schools and Taylor Middle School. “The Fauquier County school division does so much for its students,” he said. “Not only do we learn the necessary subjects in school, but we also learn life skills, things that will follow and continue to help us for the rest of our lives. The Fauquier County school division gives its students the necessary tasks to succeed in life; by doing this they give each student hope for a bright, successful and promising future.” Liberty High School senior Shay Vestal

They are here because they want to be here, because

they love what they do, and each one of them shows that in the classroom.” “Every teacher has been more than willing to go out of his or her way to help students both during and after school hours,” added Shay. “My teachers have done everything in their power to help students succeed, not only in high school, but also for future college courses.” FCPS teachers strive every day to meet the academic needs of all students, using a variety of teaching practices in order to match the complexity, depth and breadth of the curriculum. All 910 FCPS teachers are required to be “highly qualified” as defined by the state; more than half of the school division’s teachers hold a master’s degree. Many find teaching in Fauquier County Public Schools to be both challenging and rewarding. Jeff Pingrey, science teacher at Cedar Lee Middle School who was named as Fauquier County’s Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher of the Year last year, said there’s nothing like teaching. “I seem to be doing something of greater value when I’m teaching,” he said. “The kids are like my own – with all the challenges they have living in a messy world we’ve created. I love every one of them; they are all diamonds in the rough.” Mr. Pingrey said when he first came to Fauquier County, he felt as if he had “come home.” “I come from a rural county in upstate New York that is very much like Fauquier – a mixture of businesses and the most progressive farms in New York, and the people here have the same values I was raised with,” he said. A newcomer to Fauquier County and a first-year teacher at Mary Walter Elementary School, Michelle Kowasic moved here this past summer from Arizona. “I love the small-town feeling of Warrenton,” she said. “It is a friendly, warm community where I can grow.” A relative newcomer to the county himself, Dr. Jonathan Lewis, who has been division superintendent since January 2008, is spearheading a Education Continued on Page 10 Warrenton Lifestyle

Warrenton Couple Serves Locally, Acts Globally

xactly eleven years ago, my family and I came to the U.S. with only a suitcase and the directive of God. We found ourselves in Warrenton where we opened a home care agency called Cleansing Water. My desire in choosing the name was to give credit to someone greater than me. I was led to a place in the bible, John 5:1-9, where Jesus healed a lame man at the pool of Bethesda—Jesus is the Cleansing Water. Cleansing Water serves individuals in the community concerning issues of wellness, recent physical challenges, or longterm chronic illness. Our goal is to enable the elderly to remain in their homes as long as possible, where they feel most comfortable. Because each individual is a unique creation, their care also must be unique… customized to meet the needs of the whole person, body, mind and spirit. In addition to our work in this community, my husband and I have traveled to various parts of Africa on many occasions. We’ve seen the plight of multitudes of orphaned children and we pledged our lives to improving their quality of life. In Warrenton, we crossed paths with Reverend Grace and Richards Kariuki, who founded Amazing Grace Children’s Home in Nairobi, Kenya to care for orphaned and homeless children. It is not an easy task, but nothing of value ever is. We knew we were destined to help.

Cleansing Water brought a much needed water supply to the drought-stricken nation of Kenya. Water is rationed but it often never makes it to the areas with the greatest need. I have never experienced such love and joy from so many grateful hearts— cleansing, healing water is a vital source of life that no child should have to live without. In addition to Cleansing Water, another important mission is Father’s Way International, an arm of The Father’s Way Church in Manassas. We established Father’s Way International to raise funds to care for HIV/AIDS-infected children and to create shelter, housing, medical facilities and educational facilities in developing countries. Many of the orphaned children in Africa lost their parents to the pandemic nature of AIDS. Recently, two of the children at the Amazing Grace Children’s Home tested positive for HIV. We will continue to seek funding for this lifesaving mission—this mission of mercy.

Cluckster’s Last Stand By Susan McCorkindale

The View from the Farm

(Pour yourself another cup of coffee and read it. I swear, you’ll laugh!) Now I know I’m bored. I’m gardening. Replanting the window boxes counts as gardening, right? My husband, Stu, packed them full of pansies and petunias in the spring, but since then the pansies have passed on, done in by both the warm weather and the last of our psycho chickens. Apparently one night while we slept, the Great Banty Bloodbath took place in our side pasture. How we didn’t hear the screaming and fluttering and flinging of eggs in the face of the attacker is beyond me, but we didn’t. Something, maybe it was a fox or a raccoon, ripped our pretty rooster to shreds, and murdered six of our remaining ten hens. A seventh died later of her injuries. So now we’ve got three cuckoo birds left and they absolutely, positively will not return to the coop. Who knew chickens could suffer Post Traumatic Stress Disorder? Instead, they’ve commandeered one of the window boxes on the porch. They sit in it, root their freaky fourtoed feet around in it, stare at the empty coop, and cluck. And peck at themselves and each other. Until somebody gets annoyed. Really annoyed. In no time there’s feathers flying, potting soil sailing over the side, and all the pansies and petunias are pushing up daisies. Which is how I came to be replacing them today. Usually, Stu does this stuff. But he can’t as he’s bush hogging or making hay or frankly, I

don’t know what, so I’m stuck here planting and waiting … for Cluckster and her pullet pals to make their move. Cluckster is a tough old bird with a big mouth and a serious aggressive streak. I can’t tell you how many times she’s sauntered up the stairs to the front door, forced our small dog Pete from the floor mat in front of same, and settled in. It would be one thing if she did this quietly. But no. Cluckster earned her name for her nonstop, crazy-making, clucking. She awakens clucking at a level our rooster never reached, passes out clucking, and one day, maybe soon, she’ll pass away. . . a casualty of her uncontrollable clucking. Or maybe my honey will simply try to shoot her. Again. The first summer we had her, when she was just a puny pullet, her clucking reached the crescendo of one of those freaky PETA protestors during Fashion Week. It was a hundred degrees outside (and two hundred inside thanks to a flash thunderstorm that lasted five minutes and left us without power for three days), and we were all pretty hairy from the heat. We took our lunch and picnicked on the porch. The scent of eau du Black Angus wafting in the warm breeze was pretty bad, but not so bad that it made us bonkers. That, of course, was Cluckster’s job. As soon as we sat down, Cluckster showed up. She lunged at the boys’ burgers and attempted to swipe the lemon slice from Stu’s iced tea. He shooed her away and she made for the fern hanging above my head. Alas, chickens really can’t fly. But they can fall and when they do, they stick their landing. Which Cluckster did – in my scalp. I went from zero to roll-free burger flying in under a second. “Get it off! Get it off!” I screamed tearing across the porch. Maybe I thought a good stiff breeze might dislodge the darn bird, but I was wrong. That hen hung on for dear life. Cluckster Continued on Page 16

“I can’t help you if you won’t hold still!” Poor Stu. I was racing back and forth, swiping at my head, and howling so loud they could hear me in Miami. “Oh my God! Oh my God! I’m bleeding!” Sure enough there was blood trickling down my temple. And Cluckster? She had her claws in my cranium and was squawking at a decibel typically used to drive dictators insane. “Susan, you’ve got to stop moving!” Stu hollered. “Yeah mom, come on!” cried Cuyler, our ten year-old. “Stop, drop, and roll!” What the flip, I’m on fire, too? Something had to be done. So our eldest, Casey, did it. He grabbed me by the waist as I flew past for the four hundredth time, stopping me just long enough for Stu to clock Cluckster. She fell to the porch floor with a spectacularly satisfying thwap! and for one brief moment, we all breathed. Ok, the McMen breathed. I bled. Was she down for the count? Knocked senseless for even a second? Are you kidding? The Energizer bunny’s got nothing on this banty. Cluckster was back on her fetid feet NASCAR fast and this time she made a mad dash for our big dog, Grundy. Now if you know anything about chickens you know that going on the attack is not the norm. Sure, we’ve all heard reports of Perdue roasters flinging themselves at the feet of unsuspecting supermarket shoppers, but really, such foul play among fowl is rare. But Cluckster charged, and Grundy charged off, and Stu turned to me and said, “Suz, I’ve gotta put that pullet down.” We interrupt this family lunch for a little gunfire. (Please tell me this happens at your house.) A minute later, he returned with his rifle. He loaded it, took aim, and fired. It’s tough to hit a moving target, and Cluckster was still in hot pursuit of our pup, so the first shot missed. As did the second. And the third. By then I’d stopped bleeding, started breathing, and

served the boys seconds. Frankly, it was like being in the stands at a sporting event; we kept an eye on Team Stu, cheered, and hit the concession stand, I mean kitchen, for more burgers and beer. Of course that rule doesn’t apply to me and Stu, for whom I poured a nice, tall Jack Daniels on the rocks. Sure, I could have brought him a Bud, but as those of you married to former Marine sharpshooters know, when they’re outmaneuvered by the bad guys or, God forbid, a bird, only the hard stuff will suffice. Speaking of that crazy beast, she’s back, and she’s disemboweling her favorite window box. Which just happens to be one of the ones I just replanted. Cluckster! Knock it off! Scat!, I scream, charging toward her. But oh no. Not only does that painfully loud pullet stay put, she flicks potting soil in my face. And then a pansy. A pansy! A pansy that I just planted! I’m stunned, so I do what anyone having it out with a hen would do (please, tell me other people have it out with hens): I whip the pansy right back at her. And the root ball? Bonks her right between the eyes. In an instant, Cluckster’s flopped to the floor, dead. My Marine couldn’t kill her with a twenty-two, but I off her with an annual. You know, I’m starting to get why people love gardening. he Warrenton Presbyterian Church is hosting a 5K Run/Walk fundraiser to assist Bethlehem Ministry “Light Up The Clinic” in Terrier Rouge, Haiti. Following the race, there will be bagels, fruit, water, juices and snacks for runners to rehydrate while waiting for the final runners and walkers to finish. And after you finish your run, stay and enjoy the Town of Warrenton, have dinner on Main Street at any of our fine restaurants ranging from Molly’s Irish Pub, Tex-Mex food at Main Street Grille

Enough to feed a family of four for a week.

The region has long suffered from challenges such as high infant and maternal mortality rate, malnutrition and a host of other ailments

of medical instruments; in the use of microscopes, computers, lab and surgical equipment; for operation of the water pump, lights and air coolers; and for the refrigeration of pharmaceuticals. The Clinic is currently engaged in a campaign to raise the $15,000 necessary for solar panel installation to ensure the Clinic will be operational in the future.

When the paint dried and the door opened for the first time, young lives were changed for the better, but the hearts of those wielding the tools changed forever.

The Call

When I got the call mid-July, I was stunned.

After screening design-build firms throughout the Washington metropolitan area, producers with Extreme Makeover, the ABC Television reality series, selected my firm, Burch Builders Group, for the job. And what a job it was: design and build a home for a family in Maryland and, the biggest challenge, re-build a large house in inner-city D.C. and transform it into an after-school program for at-risk youth. There a few other conditions: Obtain all the materials from suppliers at no-cost and donate our craftsmens’ time. Do it all for free, and have it done in a week.

The Dream & The Burch Team’s Response

We met the producers of the show in our Warrenton and Alexandria offices. Called the The Fishing School Project (TFS), it was the brain-child and dream of Tom Lewis. A former D.C. police officer and three-time cancer survivor, Tom dreamt of creating a safe, positive environment for young people adrift in an urban sea of drugs and violence. If he could provide a safe haven for them – with committed mentors and character-building activities – he could calm that violent sea and rescue kids on the verge of steering a dangerous course in their lives. Tom could “fish” for adrift kids, he had talented volunteers, but he could not lead them to safety. His “safe haven” at EXTREME Continued on Page 22

More than half of the subcontractors who helped on the build and site set-up were craftsmen we work with routinely, right here in Fauquier County, and all were volunteers. I was honored to partner again our great subcontractor teammates to make history and a brighter future for young people in the nation’s capitol. They are the real heroes of this story.

After hearing the proposal from ABC, I assembled the entire Burch team. While I shared Tom Lewis’ dream, I was very specific about the colossal challenge we faced. We all loved Extreme Makeover, and we had talked about the thrill of being not just fans but stars of that show. Now we had that chance. Before I told ABC “yes,” however, before a hammer hit the first nail, every single team member had to be aboard. Each person on the team had to be as committed as I was. After all, this was no re-design of a posh home in a safe, rural enclave in the rolling hills of Fauquier County. This was a backbreaking overhaul – in just a single week – of a dilapidated house held together by meager neighborhood donations, prayer and not much more. It was also sixty miles away in a violent crime breeding ground where every night was punctuated by gun shots. (Ultimately, we would know that on a personal basis. We heard them almost every night.) We could only pull it off if everyone was fully committed, so I had resolved that just one person on our team could veto the project. I did not share that personal resolution. Pausing and looking around the room after briefing the project, I asked the team: “Are we in or out?” The team voted “Yes!” It was not just unanimous. It was enthusiastic. It had to be.

Planning and Polling for Contributions We decided to partner with a fellow contractor member of NARI (National Association of the R emodeling Industry) to help us tackle the smaller of the two projects, the house in Maryland. Burch Builders Group would build the school, the largest undertaking in the history of Extreme M akeover: more than 6,700 square feet, demolished and rebuilt in seven days. We had three weeks to design both houses, order all the materials and get commitments from subcontractors for every construction task, all 100% donated. In three weeks, we completed all the architectural drawings, filed the engineering reports, arranged material deliveries, conducted job task analyses, coordinated volunteers, pre-staged procurements and confirmed precise production schedules. Just the planning stage alone was a 22

On Location: The Build Begins

The first day on the job, the build teams and film crews met for the first time. As we shook hands, I realized this was not just a project for our builders. It was 24/7 for the television crews as well. Day One saw them shooting the “before rebuild” set-up shots – the condition of the structures before construction began. They would break-off frequently for taping set-ups, interviews and talent prep (briefing and shooting the main voices in the episode, like Ed Sanders, Paulie DiMeo, Ty Pennington, Tracy Hutson and celebrity Tyler Perry). On arrival at the site, Ty Pennington used a bull horn to announce to the families and the neighborhood that we were there, that Tom Lewis’ dream would become a reality in just seven days. It was an extraordinarily emotional moment. The neighbors simply could not believe we were there to help, to keep our promise of transforming their neighborhood. And we made those promises not just to the neighbors en masse. We made them individually – by going door to door.

I drove in the Extreme Makeover tour bus, a well-known fixture on the show, with Ty Pennington and Paulie DiMeo. The arrival of that bus was the very first indication to TFS founder Tom Lewis that his beloved project was on, that his dream was going to come true. I won’t spoil the show by giving too much away – you must see it – but Tom Lewis’s extraordinary emotional reaction to that bus and our team, on Day One, was a rich blessing. In all sincerity, that moment changed my life.

Demolition and Delays

We demolished the house in Maryland in the morning of Day Two, then went to the school and demolished it as well. As soon as the production film crew was done shooting, we got the go-ahead and put construction on both projects in high gear. That was when the first delay set us back. The home in Maryland our NARI partner was tackling along with us immediately suffered a delay. The soil was less than desirable for building. We needed extra footing engineering and concrete pouring. Because the same concrete company was donating to both projects, the delay in Maryland triggered a delay at The Fishing School.

Many VIP’s visited the site throughout the week to wish us well, like D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty. Members of President Barack Obama’s own cabinet came, including Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis, Secretary of Energy Steven Chu and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. But the junior VIPs were most impressive. Children from my son’s school, Highland, volunteered to donate and stuff backpacks for the children of The Fishing School. The youngsters from Highland came to the school and presented them personally.

Since the school delay was unavoidable, we turned out attention to the neighborhood and pulled off an extreme makeover of our own doing that ranged for several city blocks around the school. In 8 hours, we mowed all the yards, weeded, cleaned up streets 24

On Extreme Makeover, the show’s bus blocks projects from view until their unveiling. On Day Seven, it was time to “move the bus” and unveil the project. There was not a dry eye anywhere in the neighborhood.

Of course, he had already repaid me, and richly. I told him, “I came to this neighborhood to help the children of D.C. and make a difference in their lives. As it turns out, Tom, this project changed me more. Changed my team more. It has giving us faith that a group of people can come together to do something good for someone else, to extend the blessing.”

A Porch Postscript

With tears in his eyes, Tom Lewis came up to me after the filming was completed and said, “You have done a wonderful thing for the kids in this neighborhood. This structure will serve generations of families. How can I ever repay you or thank you enough?”

Remember that home on Meade Street, the one hit by a tree during a storm? Days after the show’s film crew had left D.C. and children were in their new school, we came back and repaired the damage. In many ways, it was one of the most rewarding experiences of the build, because we kept an unspoken promise. When Burch Builders Group showed up and started working, the neighbors of Meade Street came up to our crew. “We knew you would come back! You guys are great! How can we repay you?” Like Tom Lewis, the Meade Street neighborhood already repaid us. Richly.

Changing Hearts, Starting With Your Own

So many events and so many faces made that week in D.C. memorable, but Day One stands out for me. It was then that Tom Lewis, the founder of The Fishing School, now fighting cancer for the third time, walked up to me. Surrounded by some of the children he serves, he told me: “I can’t believe you are here! I can’t believe you are going to build us a new school.” The fact is, as I look back, I can’t believe how life-changing an experience it was for me. Many of us enjoy the richness of family and friends, the benefits of life in a beautiful county and the joy of working with committed professionals. These are exceptional blessings. In just seven days this year, however, I learned that we are not called merely to fence-off the blessings and keep them to ourselves. We are blessed for one reason: to bless others. Somewhere right here in Fauquier County, there is a Tom Lewis with an impossible dream of transforming lives. Find him, adopt his dream as your own, make a promise and keep it. When you extend the blessing by changing someone’s life for the better, don’t be surprised when the most dramatic change occurs in your own heart. 26

Fauquier Health New Physician Brings needed Services to Area: Rheumatology

veryone complains about their aches and pains, but some people have it worse than others. Rheumatic diseases, such as arthritis and fibromyalgia, are often chronic and can have far-ranging effects on a person’s ability to participate in daily activities. And because rheumatic diseases are often difficult to treat, the emotional impact can take a toll on a patient’s work, marital, family or social life. To make matters worse, finding a specialist to treat a chronic rheumatic condition can be a real challenge, and can result in agonizingly long wait times and lengthy commutes. Meeting our community’s needs Fauquier Health recently conducted research to identify the medical needs of the local community, and the results revealed an immediate need for rheumatology services. To address this need, the health system added rheumatologist Nandini Chhitwal, M.D., to its physician staff. “There is such a tremendous need for a rheumatologist in the Warrenton area because the field is still an emerging specialty, and therefore, there aren’t very many of us to begin with,” explains Dr. Chhitwal. “And even though there are a number of rheumatologists up in the Northern Virginia area, once you travel outside of that area, the number

drops dramatically. For patients who are not feeling well, it’s a major inconvenience to have to drive 40 minutes or more each way in heavy traffic to see a physician.” Treating a wide range of problems Rheumatologists diagnose and treat painful disorders that affect the joints, muscles, connective tissue and soft tissue around the joints and bones. Arthritis is the most common of these disorders, and Dr. Chhitwal treats everything from the regular mechanical (wear-and-tear) type of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis, to the more inflammatory types of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis and gout. “I also deal with the whole spectrum of autoimmune diseases, including lupus, scleroderma and sjogren’s, as well as the rarer types of immune disorders, such as vasculitis. And I treat a variety of disease processes, including musculoskeleteal diseases and pain disorders, such as myofacial pain syndrome, fibromyalgia and vitamin D deficiency.” The perfect fit Across the country, rheumatologists are in great demand and have many choices when deciding where to set up practice. Dr. Chhitwal chose Fauquier for several reasons: she grew up nearby, her entire family lives in

the area, and she was impressed by the beauty and charm of our quiet community. Nearly 80 percent of these “sandwiched” caregivers are women. And, on average, they can expect to spend 18 years of their lives helping an aging parent, often while caring for a younger family member, too. Adults age 85 and older are the fastest growing segment of our population, and 58 percent of the over-85 population is disabled in some way. This is a daunting challenge for today’s caregivers. Growing older does not automatically bring incapacity, but when it does, physical and cognitive changes can come on quite suddenly.

Thus, it is critical to recognize that it is never too soon to talk with your elderly parents or relatives about the future. It is just another form of family planning.

Avoid saying, “You know, Mom, since you had the stroke, you really can’t take care of yourself anymore; you need help.” Instead, try saying, “Since you had the stroke, I can’t sleep or concentrate at work. I’m so worried about you being on your own and being able to take care of things. Would you help me by coming to talk with someone who can help?” Most elders are not going to be resistant if it is expressed in the context of putting their adult children at ease. While many adult children don’t end up playing an active role in their 32

elder relative’s planning process, eldercare experts point out the importance of knowing who to go to when the time comes – the attorney, the health-care surrogate, and so on. Listen to the responses you get, and let your parents know you care about them and want to be able to follow through with their wishes.

My Experience

he untimely death of my son from a brain tumor at the age of 53 taught me the benefits of the national hospice movement. Immediately upon being diagnosed with this incurable illness, his physician referred him to hospice care. For six months and then for an additional six months he remained at home where he received almost daily care by a social worker, regular medical care by a skilled nurse, and periodic checkups by a physician. When he lost his ability to walk, he was furnished an electric wheel chair. All the above came at no cost to him. Throughout this period he experienced no pain (palliative care) enabling ease of communication between him and his friends and family.

My Plan Should I be diagnosed with a terminal illness (cancer, emphysema, “Lou Gehrig’s disease”, early stage dementia or another), I will ask my physician to refer me to Hospice of the Rapidan.

My Reasons • I have personally heard and read countless remarks by appreciative family members. • I have seen the tears (both sad and joyful) of family members at the annual Butterfly Celebrations. • I have observed at the annual Christmas Celebrations the fellowship of families who have similar memories and experiences. • I have participated in periodic Grief Support Groups where family members are lovingly guided through steps of grieving. • I have attended the annual Gala and seen the smiling faces of people dancing and taking part in the benefit auctions. • I have spoken with doctors who shared with me their confidence in Hospice of the Rapidan. • I continue to marvel at the diligence of those nurses who have served with Hospice of the Rapidan for years, who know the geography of our area inside out, and who when needed visit homes in the middle of the night.

Did you know that I regularly consort with criminals? While I readily acknowledge that some of them are lawbreakers, I use the term “criminals” only because they are referred to as such in the media. I am not talking about parking tickets or misdemeanors. I am talking about assault, burglary, forgery – the type of behavior that can hurt you or me. I am not in the law enforcement profession. Why, then, would I spend any time associating with men and women who have placed their own interests above those of others? Very simply, because I have come to understand the enormous power of a microscopically small molecule named deoxyribonucleic acid DNA to most of us. In 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick made one of the greatest scientific discoveries of all time. Called a double helix because of its shape, the molecule they discovered is an intricate message system. Located in nearly every cell in a person’s body, it is the hereditary material that determines, to a great degree, who we are – our appearance, our behavior, even our susceptibility to various diseases. While any human being may find himself suffering from a heart attack or pneumonia, it is not uncommon for such disorders to run in families. A person whose father and grandfather both died from a cardiac problem would be wise to take necessary precautions to keep his heart strong.

Family members have similar genes, hence the term genetic predisposition, a susceptibility to coming down with the same disorder. Between 50 and 70 percent of the variability in susceptibility to becoming addicted can be accounted for by genetic factors. Addiction is a brain disease expressed in the form of compulsive behavior. This is how it is defined by the Institute of Medicine, the American Psychiatric Association and the American Medical Association. The essence of addiction is the virtually uncontrollable craving for certain substances or behaviors even in the face of negative consequences. For example, using tobacco even to the detriment of one’s health is not a habit – it’s an addiction. The emphysema patient in the hospital with an oxygen tank beside the bed is not indulging a habit when he asks for a cigarette. Not everyone who uses drugs becomes addicted. Very simply, it is a “crap shoot”. The fact that one carries the genes predisposed toward addiction does not necessarily mean one will become an addict. No one can predict the future but taking chances with predispositions is akin to going wild in Las Vegas. All brain disorders such as stroke, Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia and clinical depression have behavioral aspects. Parkinson patients cannot control their trembling. Clinically depressed patients cannot voluntarily control their moods. The difference between these disorders and addiction, however, is that addiction begins with a definite voluntary behavior – a desire to use a drug such as alcohol, for example. At a particular period in life, often when a teenager, the desire to be part of the group takes over and the use of alcohol becomes the lifestyle. At some point, the user crosses an invisible line—a once voluntary behavior becomes compulsive. Cellular and molecular changes within the brain occur. A onetime social drinker rarely returns to his original casual drinking. Physical dependence and addiction are not synonymous. It is natural for the body to temporarily depend on certain narcotics after prolonged use, even under the care of a physician. This problem can be easily managed with appropriate medications. What is more important is the compulsive craving that overwhelms all other motivations. Psychological treatment is almost always required. It is a mistake to think that just because one started using a drug voluntarily, one can quit in the same fashion. Drug addiction is not a failure of will or of strength of character – the brain has been altered. Environmental cues become conditioned to drug use. When these cues are present at a later time, they cause the individual to anticipate a drug experience and generate tremendous drug craving. This is one of the most frequent causes of relapses even after long periods of abstinence. Another common cause of relapses is treatment noncompliance—i.e. not following doctor’s orders. This is true for all chronic illnesses including asthma, diabetes, hypertension, and addiction. Motivation and behavior are clearly important parts of success in treatment and recovery. The treatment regimen is harder than it sounds. With addiction, we treat all aspects of the individual, not just the biological component or the behavioral component. The entire individual is considered by combining the use of medications, behavioral therapies, and attention to necessary social services and rehabilitation. After-care is essential whether following inpatient or outpatient treatment. Returning to a home or neighborhood where drugs were regularly used gives the addict the cues that may return him almost immediately to using. Keeping in mind that addiction is a brain disease, it is not difficult to understand the ease with which an addict can return to using. National statistics show that a high percentage of arrestees are addicted to illegal drugs. Society needs to be protected from addicts who hurt members of society in one way or another. However, addicts themselves need to be protected from the ravages of their disease. There is a way to protect both the addict and society simultaneously. Both the legal system and the addict’s family can apply pressure. Drug courts serve to stop the abuse of alcohol and other drugs through an extensive supervision and treatment program. If the defendant agrees to complete a drug treatment program, the court may dismiss the original charge, reduce or set aside a sentence, offer some lesser penalty, or a combination of these. Drug courts currently exist in approximately 20 localities in the Commonwealth of Virginia. I have no knowledge of any such court existing in or near Fauquier County. Another approach is the use of the Restorative Justice Program. Restorative Justice begins with the understanding that crime harms victims, offenders, their families and communities. It focuses on the harms of wrongdoing rather than the rules that have been broken. It shows equal concern for victims, offenders and communities. It provides opportunities for dialogue between victims and offenders and those affected by wrongdoing. Victims and offenders are brought together in structured meetings to discuss the incident, understand who has been affected, and to work together to repair the harm. Addicts who commit crimes as a result of being under the influence of a drug are simultaneously offenders and victims. Their actions lead toward possibly a store being burglarized with the resultant harm to both the store’s owner and the community. However, what the use of a drug has done to themselves can lead toward their ending up in jail, a mental hospital, or a cemetery. The United States of America is a nation of laws. Whatever the cause of crime, there must be a punishment. Might we not, however, spend more time on prevention?

Fall is here and beckoning us outside to enjoy the beautiful fall colors and fresh crisp air. A great place to do that is Buckland Farm Market; it is finally open and ready for the fall with the Wild West Adventure Corn Maze, a petting zoo, face painting, hayrides and wonderful fresh fruit and produce. Every Friday and Saturday night is Flashlight Night in the Corn Maze. And, after the family fun, pick up some of Sherry Lynn’s fresh baked goods to take home. They have planned the Grand Opening for October 6th, so take the family out and enjoy this beautiful fall weather. We also have two other businesses that have opened recently; Don’s Barber Shop has opened next to the Post Office at Vint Hill and Iron City Hot Dogs has opened next to On the Run Sports. Iron City Hot Dogs has the great Heinz Field hot dogs, kielbasa and lots more, including all the Pittsburgh Steelers garb. We have lost some businesses this month and one of them was a long time fixture here in Warrenton. If you ever had the need to stop into the Waterloo Market for a gallon of milk, a newspaper or a sandwich, then you know that it was a friendly place with great people and will be missed by many. The Salvation Army has purchased the building and will be doing some remodeling before they move into their new larger space. They have desperately needed a larger space for a long time. Although, Payne’s Pools has signed a five year lease to stay in their current space at the lower end of the building, Turnkey Networks and Cottage Antiques will have to relocate by October 31st. Two other businesses have closed recently; Century Flooring near JoAnn’s Fabrics has closed, along with the Where the Hunt Ends consignment shop that was located on Broadview Avenue.
