Dr. Jakum. Patient Jakum. Coach Jakum. When Dr. Josh Jakum tore his ACL during a soccer game, his first thought was, “How am I going to coach my sons’ lacrosse team?” With only a few short months until the season, he set out to find the best orthopedic care. So, he teamed up with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Robert Smith, who previously served with the Baltimore Ravens. The two agreed to a bone-tendon-bone graft surgery. And then came the rehab. Three days a week Dr. Jakum worked to regain his strength and mobility. But on March 12th, he didn’t show up for his therapy. Because he was on the field, putting the Talons lacrosse team through their very first drills. Orthopedics For more information on our Orthopedic services visit www.fauquierhealth.org.

Networking Online Builds Relationships by Jamie Gorman

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Blogging – they’re all the rage and growing daily. Most of us have accounts because our friends and families insisted “you have to be on _____”, making us feel like schmucks from the 18th century if we weren’t telling the world what we had for breakfast each morning. And now that you are all set up, the reality is that you love it. Admit it, you enjoy seeing pictures of nieces, nephews and grandchildren, tracking your high school buds, trading funny comments with friends and even communicating with your teens (who may be sitting right next to you on the couch). It’s a lot of fun for me to do all these things, and I often find myself looking at the clock wondering where the time went, but feeling a sense of connection with people that I wouldn’t have thought of without online social media.

A majority of my time these days is focused on helping my small business clients use these new tools to grow their business. They are an awesome addition to anyone’s marketing strategy, but something often overlooked in social media blogs and articles is how social media can help boost your individual career. When you step back and take a look at how people build a great career, social media has all the ingredients: connecting with a network, exhibiting your expertise and building relationships. Connecting with a Network Over the last 15 years I have been an employee of four different companies as I transitioned from Navy life. One resulted from weeks of classified searching, resume sending and interviewing and the other three came from people I know. The point is that you are more likely to find better jobs that are more suited to your interests through the people in your network, and most experts agree that companies will find the best employees from the referrals of existing employees. Social media is all about networking! For those of us who struggle just to get a Christmas card in the mail each year, let alone call, write or visit with people we know from college or previous jobs, social networking is wonderful and efficient. I’m not suggesting that you replace your current face-to-face networking with a virtual one, only that you use the tools available to connect

and keep in touch with the people you have met. (Yes Mom, we’re still coming for Thanksgiving!)

Exhibiting your Expertise Let’s say I’m an employer looking for a program manager on a recently awarded technology contract. I’m comparing two resumes that seem to fit the job description. Because the resumes came through LinkedIn, I have access to each candidate’s online profile. Both of the profiles reflect the resumes with a little more detail, but one includes a link to the person’s blog. I take a look and find that the person has been posting five or six entries a year since they were in college. Some are about their hobbies golf and travelling, and others are about new methods for managing contracts, reviews on business books they’ve read and the direction of technology in our industry. None of these posts will win a Pulitzer, but they are readable and demonstrate a level of experience and

expertise. Which candidate are you more likely to call for an interview? Blogging is a great way for any professional to exhibit their expertise. Additionally, you can follow and comment on other people’s blogs, tweet the links of interesting articles and even put together some quick “how-to” videos to post on YouTube. It adds a boost to your resume, and you may even be able to build it to the point of being a leading online expert. As a leading expert, you can generate web traffic that may result in extra revenue, speaking invitations and even unsolicited job offers.

Building Relationships When building a strategy for using social media to market a business, we talk a lot about building relationships. You can do the same thing for your personal professional network. Think about the things that build a great relationship – frequent contact, listening, discussion and trust. Social media helps you do these things with people you can’t see every day and is a good supplement for the people that you do see frequently. • Posting interesting aspects of your life helps make frequent contact. • Reading other people’s posts and contributions is listening. • Commenting and replying to posts and comments is a discussion. • Following up, being consistent, adding value and posting an occasional professional accomplishment helps build trust.

Social Media continued from page 10 Once again, social media is a supplement that enables you to build relationships with hundreds of people daily, rather than the 40 or so that most of us can physically manage faceto-face.

SmileS are for Sharing,

not hiding!

Apply the Tools to Your Situation It is easy to become quickly overwhelmed with all the new social media tools available, so it’s important to focus first on the one with which you are most comfortable and can be most effective. Most experts recommend that you start with a LinkedIn account because it gives you a base profile that you can reference and it’s pretty simple to set up and use. If you are already on Facebook, start adding some work-related comments and learn how to separate your friends into different lists. If you are the type of person who finds yourself answering questions with long emails, start a blog to post those answers. The strategy will be different for each person.

Several months ago I suggested to my daughter, a college freshman at the time, that she join LinkedIn and start a blog. She made a few professional connections with friends and college professors and wrote a couple of blog entries about her summer adventures. Over the next few years as she studies, travels, meets new people and works, she’ll continue to add connections, build a solid portfolio of professional reference material and foster working relationships that will last. All of us can do the same thing in our profession so that when those critical points in our career arise, we are prepared with a good network and an online library that exhibits our expertise. Community Interest

Warrenton Aquatic & Recreational Facility

Running Fauquier County residents came together with an idea to connect and create local trails, paths and greenways. Approved by the Board of Supervisors in November of 2007, this plan will provide alternative means of transportation, encourage recreation, promote tourism and help improve the environment. Fauquier County as a whole will benefit from this plan, but presently runners use the trails. The plan will generate a safe network of trails that will supply runners with extended mileage and varied terrain.

Through Fauquier

Fauquier County Trails Connection Plan While all of Fauquier County is included in this connectivity plan, the Town of Warrenton already offers popular options for its residents. Although Warrenton lacks a cohesive system, the following areas are visited frequently and have been unofficially connected through road usage and footpaths.

Warrenton Branch Greenway Warrenton Branch Greenway has become a main point of interest for downtown Warrenton, combining

history and recreation. The railroadthemed greenway, located at the end of South 4th Street, provides a clean and scenic area for runners. Following the old Warrenton Branch spur line, the ten foot wide paved path begins behind Claire’s at the Depot restaurant and winds through town for approximately 1.5 miles ending at the Old Meetze Road entrance near Warrenton Mini Storage. Runners cruise along a flat path, passing by a section of rail line, a retired red caboose and an old turntable. The Piedmont Railroaders Club installed the

short section of rail line and meticulously helped restore the caboose donated by the Norfolk and Western Railroad. The unearthed turntable, once covered by the railroad in 1951 because of the advance of technology, is a unique piece of our county history. In addition to passing the railroad artifacts, runners will enjoy a quiet run on a predominately-shaded path that meanders between peaceful neighborhoods and over two bridges. Fauquier Trails Continued from page 15 Rail yard signs and mile markers decorate the sides of the greenway, and markers with historical information and quaint grassy nooks with benches are ideal areas for stretching and resting.

Rady Park

Whites Mill Trails

Nestled at the end of Fauquier Road, tucked between a community and a fenced paddock, seven-acre Rady Park has a smooth short loop for runners. The partially shaded paved loop runs along the park’s perimeter for approximately .59 mile, and there is also a small dirt path. While the loop is small, it gives runners plenty of options to keep their mind off the distance and pace. Lapping the baseball field, volleyball court, soccer/football field, playground and picnic tables allows for many people-watching opportunities. With all of the open space and picnic areas, there are plenty of places to stretch and rest before, between and after runs.

Warrenton Aquatic and Recreation Facility Located off of Waterloo Street, the Warrenton Aquatic and Recreation Facility (WARF) is known for its indoor competition swimming pool, leisure pool with water slide, relaxing lazy river and fitness room but it also provides an outdoor running path. The 1.8 mile paved and partial dirt path passes the soccer fields and the home of the Claude Moore Fun For All Playground located directly behind the WARF. Smooth terrain with gently rolling hills will make for a fast loop.

White’s Mill Trail Situated on Mill House Lane near the Fauquier Swim Club, a new resource on 70 acres provides runners with an alternative to road running. White’s Mill is a stream valley park loaded with natural beauty including wildlife and a variety of vibrant flowers, shrubs and trees. The 1.5 mile paved trail follows the wetlands that border Cedar Run and has directional options for runners. Fauquier Trails Continued on page 18 16

Fauquier Running Club

COMING SOON…

Interested in running? Mike Stanislaw of On the Run Sports organized the Fauquier Running Club. Come join other runners of varying levels on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. for motivation and support. Tuesday’s runs are located at the Warrenton Branch Greenway and are generally longer distance runs. Thursday’s runs are on the track at Fauquier High School or neighboring fields with shorter distances emphasized to work on speed. For more information, please visit www.fauquierrunners.com.

Stafford Farm Trail Projected to open in October 2010, Stafford Farm Trail is a 1.1 mile dirt trail with open meadow views, two creek crossings and a rustic old mill. With its trailhead located off Meetze Road, this trail is the first of many in the Connection Plan, connecting to the Warrenton Branch Greenway. Predominately flat with a gently rolling hills and slight twists, this will be a fast trail in a pastoral setting.

Woods at Warrenton An up and coming stream valley park, the Woods at Warrenton along Cedar Run will host a rustic wetlands and nature trail. Runners will be able to mosey through the park’s 55 acres and appreciate nature’s simple pleasures. Woods at Warrenton will adjoin White’s Mill to Warrenton Chase, becoming a connector for the proposed loop around Warrenton.

Lord Fairfax Connector Trail This future trail beginning at Lord Fairfax Community College will join with the Warrenton Branch Greenway. The proposed 0.3 mile trail has been approved and construction is underway. The paved trail will be similar to the popular Warrenton Branch Greenway, primarily flat with slight inclines and declines. If you are interested in helping establish the trail system in Fauquier County and would like to donate your time, property or money toward the trail projects, please contact the Fauquier County Parks and Recreation Department at (540)347-6848, 320 Hospital Hill, Suite 6 Warrenton, VA 20186.

William C. Whitney State Forest The 147-acre state forest and wildlife sanctuary on Lees Ridge Road gives Warrenton runners a change of terrain and extended mileage. Whitney State Forest holds just over 6 miles of trails that meander through the densely wooded deciduous forest, accented with wildflowers and a streambed. The main dual track loop winds back and forth near a central fire road, allowing for gently rolling to challenging hills with an elevation gain of approximately 100 feet. Trails cut within the loop provide runners a varying work out including stream crossings, downed trees, twists and turns. This is an excellent place to change up your running routine from the sidewalks and pavement to dirt and gravel.

Life & Living It

The Love of Music and Its Endless Possibilities

I

cannot live without music. I simply can not. From my earliest days music in some form has been a part of my life. I come from a musical family. My mother played the piano before she became ill and on top of the upright piano sat the mandolin that my Dad played before becoming disabled during World War I. My cousin, Diane, is a highly skilled pianist; my cousin, Eileen, played piano accordion; and my Uncle Louis, although he could not read a note of music, was able to sit at the piano and pick up popular tunes flawlessly. Singing was prevalent. At gatherings everyone of all ages joined in. At home my father and I harmonized as we sang “Over There,” “Give my Regards to Broadway” and other WWI songs. My uncle sang “Harvest Moon” in a barbershop quartet. As someone who has always found the study of languages easy, music was merely another language. At age seven I was given a violin. I realize now the huge financial sacrifice but I helped pay back the cost by practicing diligently. This led to my playing Mendelsohn’s Melody in F at a local radio station and later 20

Music Continued from page 20 I never had an opportunity to learn because I was a member of the school jazz band. My love of “Big Band” music was too strong, however, for me not to become a dancer. Having by that time found a job in New York City, I started to take lessons at a school run by the famous Arthur Murray and moved on to dancing at the renowned Roseland Ballroom. Just a few years after high school graduation along with millions of other men, I found myself in the military preparing to fight in World War II. I was sent to Ft. Dix, New Jersey, where we were awakened each morning, not by a bugler but by a blaring band marching in front of the barracks. The following day I was sent to the orderly room where the officers had found that I played the trumpet. I was given a three day pass to go home for it, and suddenly found myself part of this blaring band waking the others. 22

Fauquier Worships

Fauquier’s Jewish Congregation is a Growing Part of Warrenton’s Culture by Barbara Simon The Fauquier Jewish Congregation is in existence today thanks to the efforts of two local residents, Dr. David Pfeffer and Yakir Lubowsky. Back in 1999, they sought out to find other Jews in the Warrenton area to celebrate holidays and rites of passage. Prior to this, the closest Jewish congregations involved a minimum of a 30 minute commute. “Because of their initial efforts, and the efforts of others, we’ve been able to make a Jewish home in Fauquier County with approximately 25 member families”, explained Lulu Baer of Warrenton. They put an ad in the Fauquier Times Democrat, and a few people responded. They initially met in people’s homes, and in 2001, the group expanded large enough to have events at other facilities, such as the Highland School. Today, Shabbat (Sabbath) services, high holy days services and religious school

are held at St. James Episcopal Church in Warrenton. Lulu Baer reminisced about her early days with the congregation. “I found our through word of mouth about the group through a Jewish homeschooling friend, that they would be meeting at someone’s house. At that meeting, they talked about the need to start a social group that would meet for the holidays and celebrations. We met for the first time at a Yom Kippur break to fast at the home of a Jewish family. The movers and shakers decided that we should find a place to meet, and Saint James Episcopal Church graciously hosted us.” They obtained their Torah scroll (the Five Book of Moses) in 2003. The Torah was very old and refurbished by a specially trained scribe, called a sofer. The Torah’s ark (an ornamental closet which contains the Torah scrolls) is a labor Jewish Congregation Continued on page 30

Jewish Holidays Explained for Gentiles Ever wonder why Jewish Holidays seem to change dates each year? Well Jewish holidays do in fact fall on the same day every year, the same day on the Jewish calendar! The Jewish calendar follows the lunar cycle where as our widely used calendar follows the solar cycle. The Jewish calendar has a varying number of days because the cycles are different; their calendar is roughly 11 days shorter in comparison to a secular calendar. Since the calendar is shorter every two or three years an extra month is added to make up for the lost days. As a result, the holidays do not always fall on the same day, but usually within the same month or two. In addition to following the lunar cycle, Jewish holidays usually begin the evening before the date marked on the secular calendar. If the calendar says that Passover starts on April 24, families will join together the night of the April 23 to begin celebrating. The holidays discussed might not be the most important Jewish holidays, but American Jews most commonly celebrate these holidays. Passover - This holiday commemorates the Exodus from Egypt; Passover is celebrated for seven or eight days starting the night of a full moon in April. It usually overlaps with Easter, although occasionally it occurs a month after Easter. Almost all American Jews observe Passover to some extent, whether it is the full celebration or if they attend a ritual dinner called a Seder at their parent’s house on the first or second night of the holiday. Rosh Hashanah - The Jewish New Year that occurs between Labor Day and Columbus Day. Rosh Hashanah is a festive holiday, but more solemn than the American New Year. Similar to the American New Year it is a time to reflect on the past year and make resolutions for the upcoming year. Yom Kippur - The Jewish Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur is a full day of fasting and repentance in order to reconcile with mistakes that have been made within the past year. It occurs on the ninth day after the first day of Rosh Hashanah, usually falling in late September or early October. Chanukkah - The festival of lights, Chanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. After a victorious revolt against the Seleucid Greeks, the successful Jews needed to light the Temple’s menorah. Only having enough oil to last one day, and knowing it would take eight days to prepare more oil, the menorah was lit. The oil supply lasted for eight days, allowing the light to shine in the Temple. The miracle of the oil is commemorated with this eight-day candle lighting holiday. Chanukkah begins between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Almost all Jews light candles with their families for some of the holiday nights, so they prefer being home during this holiday. It is important to understand that this holiday is not the Jewish Christmas, Chanukkah is a very minor holiday. It is about lighting candles and playing games for chocolate coins and eating potato pancakes. Though, many Jewish parents give their children gifts during Chanukkah because they do not want their children to feel left out of Christmas. Chanukkah gift giving rarely extends much beyond one’s own children. October 2010 2010

of love, made by the father of the first boy who was bar mitzvahed at the congregation. The Fauquier Jewish Congregation is a nonaffiliated, independent congregation. “Being independent has served us well,” explained Dr. Larry Finkel, former president. “We have many intermarriages and a female rabbi, and we like to be independent so we can attract anyone who is interested in worshipping and becoming part of our community. They may say ‘no’ to us, but we don’t say ‘no’ to anyone.” They have recently begun an affiliation with the Institute of Southern Jewish Life, which provides educational and rabbinic services to southern Jewish communities.

Rabbi Jacobs is proud of the congregations’s religious school, beginning at age five. Ten children from the congregation have been bar or bat mitzvahed. For children younger than five, she leads a Tot Shabbat, in which the children are introduced to Jewish prayers and songs. There are future plans to begin a youth group for teens. “The goal of our religious school is to make sure that our young people, when they leave the Warrenton area to go off to college, that they feel comfortable as Jews, even if they go some place with a larger Jewish community,” she said. With the changing economy, people who formerly would have left the area to retire have decided to remain here. Therefore, the congregation is attracting a new demographic of middle-aged members. To meet their growing needs a book club geared towards empty nesters as well as a Women’s Lunch and Learn are offered. Last spring, the congregation hosted their 11th annual Passover community seder at Popular Springs Inn in Casanova, Virginia, with approximately 85 people in attendance, including members as well as non-members. “I absolutely love working with the community and especially being part of the Saint James community,” said Rabbi Jacobs. “I was going into the hospital for surgery and Father Chris Pierce of Saint James pulled up in his car next to me. He was there to sit and pray for me with my husband while I was having surgery. He said we all take care of each other.” Grape juice in a Kiddish Cup, Sabbath Candles and Challah Bread are all part of the ‘Tot Shabbat’ experience!

Another well attended event, Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles, celebrates the harvest and hospitality. Diane Deitz and her daughter Audrey Pfeffer stand under a Hebrew sign that reads, “Blessed be your coming”

Their spiritual leader, Rabbi Roz Jacobs, who formerly worked in the Jewish education field in Miami, has been with the congregation for four years. She and her husband, Gary, moved to Syria, Virginia to retire. However, her retirement was short lived. “The person who was supposed to lead the Passover seder got stuck at the airport, so I offered to lead it. The board decided to hire me for the upcoming high holidays, and I’ve been there ever since,” she explained. Rabbi Jacobs affiliates at life cycle events such as baby naming, funerals and memorial services. She would love to do a wedding for the congregation, but that has not happened as of yet. 30

Fauquier Health Fauquier Hospital Awarded Designation as Patient-Centered Hospital

F

auquier Hospital in Warrenton has been formally designated by Planetree, Inc. as a “Planetree designated patient-centered hospital” for the second time in three years. This designation recognizes Fauquier Hospital’s achievement and innovation in fostering a culture within the hospital in which professional caregivers partner with patients and families, and where patient comfort, dignity, empowerment and well-being are prioritized with providing topquality clinical care. To become a designated Planetree patientcentered hospital, Fauquier Hospital was asked to demonstrate that specific patientcentered policies have been sustained over time. Designation status further requires the hospital to meet or exceed national performance benchmarks for quality and patient satisfaction. Three years ago, Fauquier Hospital was among the first five hospitals nationwide to achieve the designation (which is awarded for a three-year term). This re-designation recognizes Fauquier Hospital’s sustained excellence in patient-centered care. Today, Fauquier remains the only designated patientcentered hospital in Virginia, and one of only eleven in all of North America. Rodger Baker, president and CEO of

Fauquier Hospital, was delighted about the designation. “It was a long and enlightening journey to achieve Planetree designation in 2007. It required a complete culture change in every department. Our next challenge was to maintain that culture and continue to innovate and improve our patients’ experiences. This Planetree designation offers affirmation that we are delivering on the challenge.” The designation criteria cover both quality of care and the ways in which that care is delivered, addressing patient-provider interactions, access to information, family involvement, the physical environment, food and nutrition, spirituality, arts and entertainment and integrative therapies. In addition, the criteria focus on how the hospital is supporting its staff, opportunities for staff to have a voice in the way care is delivered, and the ways that the hospital is reaching beyond its walls to care for its community. When Fauquier Hospital was renovated in 2001, it was designed with Planetree principles in mind. The use of space, light and design taken directly from nature resulted in a beautiful facility that is more reminiscent of an elegant hotel than a traditional hospital. Artwork on the walls and soothing music in the hallways welcome visitors; smiling and

Aging Together

Gloria Hamilton is on a Mission

By Larry Stillwell, Aging Together County Resource Specialist Since the end of May, Gloria Hamilton has been putting hundreds of miles on her car every week driving between Fauquier and Rappahannock counties. Since she doesn’t have an office, her car sometimes serves as the next best thing. One day she put in 172 miles commuting. Gloria is philosophical about all the hours she spends driving: “That’s what you have to do sometimes.” It’s clear that Hamilton is on a mission. Her job? To match unemployed older adults with positions at nonprofit organizations and government agency “host sites” in Fauquier and Rappahannock. It’s a win-win situation for the worker and the agency. Hamilton is a program monitor for the National Council on Aging’s (NCOA) Senior Community Service Employment Program which will pay the worker’s minimum wage salary - $7.25 an hour, 20 hours a week – for up to 27 months. The purpose of the program is to train unemployed adults aged 55 or older who want to find new positions in the work force and develop the experience and skills they need to qualify for unsubsidized employment. Congress originally authorized this program through the Older Americans Act of 1965. For Hamilton, her work with NCOA is the latest chapter in a career devoted to serving struggling individuals in Virginia. She’s run her own employment service, placed people with disabilities in supported employment for the Virginia Department of Rehabilitation Services, and helped at-risk youth get jobs. She’s helped people with substance abuse and victims of domestic violence. “So many people out there need so much help,” Gloria says, and describes her current position as “just one little way to help people.” She says she finds meeting people and working with them to improve their lives very satisfying. “I’ve just seen so many people needing help. For me, it’s just a natural thing to want to help them.” Those without Hamilton’s extensive experience might think that in these challenging economic times matching workers with Hamilton continued on page 36 Pictured: Andy Minor (top) works to keep the food banks for Community Action clean and organized and always with a smile. Hamilton continued from page 34 positions would be impossible. Gloria acknowledges that it’s not necessarily easy, but she rarely gives up. First, she must assure the person is eligible for the program. He or she has to be unemployed, 55 or older, and income eligible according a variety of factors which Hamilton is there to help sort out. The maximum income one person currently can be receiving is $13,538, but there may be special considerations for people with different types of income. Before bringing a potential worker to a new job site, Hamilton helps them prepare for employment. She has to find older adults who are serious about working again. Most have responded to the fliers Hamilton has distributed throughout Fauquier. “I put them anywhere people are looking for work or needing assistance,” she says. “Food pantries, thrift stores, senior centers, Social Services, Community Action . . .”She’s had “lots of response”

to the fliers. She makes presentations at senior centers and develops contacts throughout the network of social services agencies, including homeless shelters. “I try to attend every meeting that involves senior citizens,” she says, “including Aging Together and Fauquier County’s Partnership for Community Resources.” Some applicants may be living without running water, without electricity, or even without a home, Hamilton says. She has to help them resolve those situations before they can be considered employable. Then she walks her clients through a series of meetings and other tasks while she evaluates their job readiness. Conscientious, timely follow-through on paperwork and meeting attendance are two important measures she uses. Hamilton’s relentless energy has paid off in placements that are proving to be of great value to these seniors and the Fauquier County organizations that have put them to work. Facing some serious budget cuts, Community Action was

desperate for help at their local food pantry and at their thrift store and she has placed one worker at each site. On a recent sunny afternoon at the Shirley Avenue site, both sides of the facility were bustling with people streaming in and out. The two new employees assigned through NCOA were on the job, and their managers couldn’t have been happier. At the thrift store, manager Janice Finch said Larry Aylor, who mans the warehouse, has been “really good” for the store. “He arrives early, is nice, agreeable, and willing to do whatever is asked,” she said. “I’m really glad there’s a program like that out there. What we needed was a part-time person. It’s worked out well.” For his part, Aylor says he enjoys working again and hopes the experience he gets with Community Action will serve him well in the future. Over at the food pantry, Andrew Minor is thinking the same thing. “It feels good to be working, yes it does,” he smiled. “I Hamilton continued on page 38

Roland Serrano, director of food banks for Community Action, says having Minor on site has “made all the difference in the world to me. He’s taken the physical side away from me,” allowing Serrano to concentrate more on management. “He’s allowed me to do my job better,” Serrano said. “If he’s the type of worker the program will put out, I’d happily endorse it anytime. He described the woman they’ve received as someone who has always been “a good worker and a staunch volunteer.” The organization’s Victory Transitional Housing currently has 12 homeless families totaling more than 30 individuals, including 12 children. They provide families in residence with housing, financial mentoring, life skill courses, and tutoring for children. They also supply all the furnishings for their new homes when they move out of the shelter.

Hamilton’s colleagues work at finding permanent jobs for program graduates. The program will even pay a month’s salary while an employer sees if a new employee is going to work out. Gloria can access funds for training, such as help with computer skills or acquiring CNA certification. They’ll even help with uniforms or other clothing if necessary. “We try not to abandon people,” she notes. As she left one meeting recently and headed for another, Hamilton was optimistic. With her enjoyment of meeting people and helping them over life’s obstacles, every week brings new referrals, new meetings, and the potential of new job placements. She seemed determined to identify every possible employer and find every employable older adult in Fauquier County. “There’s no shortage of funds at this point,” Hamilton said. And then she got in her car and drove away, off to another meeting miles away.

Community Interest

Warrenton Rotary Club quietly provides ‘Service Above Self’ in its community

by John Toler What does the worldwide eradication of polio have to do with scholarships awarded at county high schools? Or the building of bridges in Peru with ringing the bell for the Salvation Army in front of the Warrenton Safeway during the Christmas season? The answer is the Warrenton Rotary Club, which like Rotary Clubs across the country and around the world, is involved with human service projects organized by Rotary International, as well as quietly supporting good causes in our hometown. All efforts are guided by the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self.”

Acting globally… In the past ten years alone, the Warrenton Rotary Club has contributed more than its share to Rotary International’s Polio Plus Campaign. Begun in 1995, the goal of campaign was to eradicate the dreaded disease by inoculating every child in every country where the polio is still found, eliminating polio by Rotary’s 100th anniversary in 2005. 42

Polio was officially eliminated in all but a handful of Third World countries by 2005, and where it persists it is due mainly to political posturing and ignorance. More recently, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has gotten behind the Polio Plus Campaign, assuring that the job will be done, and soon. Other international aid has been more immediate. After both the deadly tsunami in Indonesia in 2004 and this year’s catastrophic earthquake in Haiti, the Warrenton Rotary Club joined other U.S. clubs in purchasing and shipping “shelter packages” that provide food and a tent structure that can safely accommodate 10 people. Closer to home, Rotarians Andy Budd and Stan Parkes rushed to New Orleans after the devastating hurricane five years ago, bringing a truckload of food, tools, generators and other needed supplies. Budd had made a similar emergency run to New York City after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Rotary continued on page 44 Warrenton Lifestyle

From 1931 until 1959, the Warrenton Rotary Club met in John Thoma’s Coffee Shoppe on Main Street. Meetings included singing, service projects and fellowship. (Courtesy of Rev. Dick Winter) Rotary continued from page 42 Warrenton Rotarians have participated in special projects with other clubs, including the “Bridges to Prosperity Project,” which built footbridges in Ethiopia and Peru, providing access to remote, isolated mountain villages. Rotarians Jim Timberlake and David Farrar and their wives, and Rotarian Jeanne Blackwell made the trip to Peru in 2008, and actually got to witness the building of one of the bridges there. “Pedals for Progress,” which supplies new and reconditioned bicycles for people in Third World countries has been an ongoing project for the Warrenton Rotary Club. Sometimes a project that a Rotarian starts lives on after he has passed away. Such was the case of the “Papa Charlie Basketball Court” in Haiti. The late Charlie Jeffries (president of 44

the Warrenton club in 1974-75) was in Haiti on a mission with the Warrenton Baptist Church in 1997, and sponsored a Haitian boy at an orphanage. The two made a great impression on each other, and as a result of Charlie’s enthusiasm, the Warrenton Rotary Club assisted by financing the construction of a basketball court at the orphanage. It was named the “Papa Charlie Basketball Court” in his honor, and has been supported by the Warrenton Rotary Club in Charlie’s name ever since.

…and locally The scholarships presented by the Warrenton Rotary Club to deserving graduating high school seniors each year also honor a late Rotarian. The Howard T. Sweeney Scholarships, which are funded by the proceeds from the club’s annual charity raffle, have provided

financial aid for students entering college for several years. Fauquier County students have also benefited from Rotary Club sponsorships to Boys’ and Girls’ States, as well as to the Rotary International Affairs Conference in Arlington, Va. Warrenton Rotarian Bob Shriner started the club’s “Dictionary Project” four years ago, which provides a new dictionary free of charge for every third grade student in Fauquier County Public Schools, with the exception of P.B. Smith Elementary, which is handled by the Elks Club in consultation with the Rotary Club. A former member and president of the Washington, D.C. Rotary Club, Mr. Shriner had seen how well the project worked there, and “got the ball rolling” soon after joining the Warrenton Rotary Club. Rotary continued on page 46 Warrenton Lifestyle

Rotary continued from page 44 Supporting local charities is also an important goal of the Warrenton Rotary Club, and over the years includes Christmas season bell ringing for the Salvation Army, contributing to the Fauquier Food Coalition, and providing one-time emergency assistance to individuals and families in need.

A long history Rotary was founded in 1905 by Paul Harris, a Chicago businessman who wanted to set up an organization where business and professional people could gather for fellowship, but more importantly pool their talents and resources for service projects that would benefit their communities. The term “Rotary” referred to the early practice of having the meetings “rotate” between the business offices of the club members. In later years, the movement spread to other countries, giving birth to Rotary International. The Warrenton Rotary Club was chartered on October 25, 1926 as Rotary Club 2420. The new club was sponsored by the Leesburg Rotary Club, and the first president was Warrenton attorney J. Donald Richards. At the time, the Warrenton and Leesburg clubs were in Rotary International District 56 (now Rotary International District 7610). The banquet marking the chartering of the club was held at the old Warrenton High School (the lower building on Academy Hill). There were 19 charter members, and although no official record has been found, it is believed that the club held its weekly meetings in the dining room of the Warren Green Hotel. Among those present were such Warrenton legends as Edwin B. King, principal of the Stuyvesant School; dentist Dr. J.O. “Biggy” Hodgkin; Tom Frank, publisher of The Fauquier Democrat and one-time Warrenton mayor; restaurateur J. E. “Barney” Barnhart; prominent businessman M. J. O’Connell; and the Rev. Paul D. Bowden, beloved rector of St. James Episcopal Church. Rev. Bowden (1893-1968) holds the distinction of being the only member Rotary continued on page 48 46

Rotary continued from page 46 of the Warrenton Rotary Club to be elected District Governor (then District 187) in 1934. In 1931, the club began holding its meetings in the Coffee Shoppe on Main Street, owned by John Thoma, also a Rotarian and father-in-law of Barney Barnhart. “The original bakery had become a restaurant as well, with an attractive pine-paneled room where Rotary could meet,” wrote long-time Rotarian Rev. J. Richard “Dick” Winter in a presentation for the club’s 75th anniversary in 2001. “Mounted fish provided the décor for the dining area, and at last count, 368 beer steins from all over the world adorned the restaurant.

“There was an upright piano in the meeting room, and in keeping with the plan of the founder of Rotary, Mr. Paul Harris, to have singing at the weekly meetings, the Rotarians of Warrenton dutifully sang,” wrote Rev. Winter. “Dr. Byrnal Haley usually led the singing, and one of his favorite songs was, “Smile, and the World Smiles with You – Sing a Song.” The Coffee Shoppe was sold in 1959, making it necessary to find a new meeting place. Meetings were held again at the Warren Green dining room and at Fauquier Springs Country Club, before landing at Ben and Mary’s Steak House – where Lions, Soroptimists and other civic clubs also met. A significant change occurred in

1987, when Rotary International voted to invite women to join the formerly all-male membership. County Librarian Maria Chiodi, who had been a member of the Front Royal Rotary Club, was the first woman to join the Warrenton club. More women have joined the club since then, serving in leadership positions, including president. The Warrenton Rotary Club met at Ben and Mary’s until it outgrew the facility and moved to Fauquier Springs Country Club in 1994, where it meets today. Now, with over 70 members – all of who have made the financial commitment to Rotary International by becoming Paul Harris Fellows – the club continues the tradition of service upon which it was founded.

Wellness

Are You Up to the Challenge? by Kim Forsten

It’s hard to believe we are entering into the last few months of 2010. Whether you have been exercising on a regular basis or are returning from a summer break, today is a great day to reflect on your personal wellness and set some new fitness goals for you and your family. The term “wellness” is quite the buzz word these days. The media has taken a great interest in “wellness” as result of the rising levels of obesity and diseases

that are directly related to our sedentary lifestyles and poor eating habits. What is wellness exactly? Webster’s provides two definitions: 1. Services focused on the promotion or maintenance of GOOD HEALTH versus the CORRECTION OF POOR HEALTH (emphasis added). 2. A dimension of health beyond the absence of disease including social, emotional, physical and spiritual health.

Focusing on health maintenance is the ideal interpretation of wellness. In our country, however, correcting poor health (which is often directly related to poor preventative wellness planning) is the trend. Personally, I am tired of hearing about how lazy and fat we are, and that the young people in our nation are fatter than their preceding generations. It is time to do something about this growing epidemic!

Here are three great tips to help you achieve real, lasting wellness results: 1. Make a simple commitment to your exercise program. Don’t buy into fad diets and diet pills--instead, buy a calendar/journal! Take your calendar out right now and choose 10 days this month where you will commit to exercising for at least 45 minutes. Commit to eating 4-5 small meals per day. Write down what you eat for 30 days.

2. Vary your routine. Have you ever met someone who says they exercise week after week, year after year and aren’t getting any new results? Our bodies adapt to stimulation over time and in order to continue to improve, we must progress and change our routines. If you are spending the time exercising, make sure you are getting the most bang for your buck! Change up your routine, and change it up frequently.

3. Be accountable. This is my most important tip. Check out these research statistics: Researchers divided people starting a walking program into 2 groups. Every week, each person in one group received a phone call asking how their walking program was going, the other group received no phone calls throughout the program. Guess what? Forty-five percent who received the phone calls were still walking compared to 2 percent of those who did not get a phone call! This study suggests that accountability increases the likelihood of sticking to your exercise program by 2,200 percent! The moral of the story here is that a strong support system equals stronger results. Enlist your family to participate in your exercise program, encourage a friend to join a fitness center with you or get a coach to encourage personal accountability!

I challenge you this fall to commit not only to your own personal wellness routine, but to also serve as a positive wellness role model within our community. Use the three secrets above to fuel your fire. Being fit will positively affect everything in your life: your health, your sex life, your mood, your relationships, and your financial success...yes, EVERYTHING! So what are you waiting for?

Lifes Best Medicine

S E PA R AT I O N By Jennifer Heyns

When my husband and I decided to have children, we wanted to be the poster parents for the 1960s. I was going to stay home, keep the house and raise the children - basically June Cleaver, minus the apron - and he was going to bear the financial brunt of our family expenses. It wasn’t as easy as we had imagined. The loss of my full-time income made it pretty difficult, but we managed to scrape by. After our first son was born we were elated and life just seemed picture-perfect. We celebrated our victory by having our second son. I’ll never forget the glazed exultation that fogged my happy brain when the plus sign appeared as I watched my 10-month old crawl and climb all over the house. Staying home with one baby was easypeasy. Staying home with two babies was - well - not easy-peasy, but that was exactly what we did….stay home. I had too much stuff to carry with me to be able to leave the house, not to mention the weight of two infant car seats. Little by little I learned to leave the house again and enter the world at large. After a few years (and the Godsend that is preschool - a whole three hours to myself!) I was even able to take on some part-time work that could be done at home. It was the birth of a writing career. It was great, the schedule was flexible and most of it was done right in the comfort of my office, on my own computer, with my babies all around me. It was so much fun, I just kept doing it even after my babes hitched a ride to “real” school on the big cheese. Unfortunately our family budget wasn’t as agreeable. Skip ahead just a tad and this summer my older son officially turned teen on me and I realized that I’d been home for thirteen years. It was time for mommy to get back out into the working world - you know, a “real” job, with a “real” paycheck and stuff. My husband was all for it. It’s not easy 52

supporting a family of four, especially when you’re a contractor in the middle of the nation’s biggest recession in, what, 80 years? His second thought, though, was, “How are YOU going to find a job NOW?” Unemployment was (and still is) enormously high, making the job market a mere feeding frenzy. As the stubborn, but loving, wife that I am, my natural reaction was, “I’ll find a job! What makes you think I can’t find a job? Oh, I’ll get a job…a great job.” Defensive? Me? No. Inside though, I was a wash of insecurity. How was a mom like me, who’s basically been home for 13 years going to get someone to hire me? To see the value in what I’d been doing for nearly a decade and a half? There’s no way I’m going to find a job, not now. In less than a month, though, I was able to find not just any old job, but a great job. See - told you! (Now picture that with a nyah-nyah and a tongue stuck out.) It’s weird though, getting up in the morning and instead of rushing around to get the boys off to school, I’m rushing around trying to get me ready in addition to getting the boys off to school. Turns out I’m harder to get ready than they are…and I’m constantly leaving my lunch on the kitchen counter! People keep asking me how my children are handling the separation now that I’m working away from home so much. My boys are champs. They’re real troopers. They come home in the afternoon, get their homework done and their chores. (Eating all the junk food before mom gets home counts as a chore, right?) And by the time I get home the little angels are happy as clams to see me. “Mommy’s home!!!” (It only took 13 years to hear that!) My husband, on the other hand, is not fairing quite as well. Every morning while I’m deciding what to wear (seriously, there is nothing decent to wear in my 200 square-

foot closet), he asks me what I’m doing and why I’m getting all dressed up. “I’m going to work.” (Did I forget to tell him? I’m pretty sure I mentioned the whole new job thing to him.) “Again?” he asks. “Um, yeah.” “Do you have to?” “Um…yeah.” I halfway expect him to lay on the floor and grab me by the leg, hugging my shin with all his might to keep me from making my way out the door. Once I finally make it to work the phone starts to ring. “I just wanted to see how you’re doing. What are you up to,” asks that familiar male voice. “Uh….working…why?” “Just wondering.” Seriously? Remember how the kids rush to greet me when I get home, chanting, “Mommy’s home!”? Yeah, well they do, only their daddy is bigger and faster. He hugs me like I’m a kidnapping victim home after years of forced absence. While we eat dinner, he gazes at me. We watch television, only he’s watching me. I go to bed, look up and he’s staring. “WHAT?” “Nothing…I just haven’t seen you all day.” So, how are the kids adjusting to mommy going back to work. That depends. Which kid are you asking about? Treat Your Ears to the Piedmont Symphony Orchestra

Can Fauquier County become a Mecca for the arts in the Piedmont region? Glenn Quader, the dynamic director of the Piedmont Symphony Orchestra, thinks that it can. “What I’d like to see is an organization on a major scale. All the arts groups in the area have a better chance of success if we work together,” he says. “However, we can’t make an impact without government support, and there’s a real disconnect between local government and the arts community. We need to find a way to get them involved, and in order to do that, we need to be working together.” Quader, who bears a strong resemblance to opera superstar

musicians actually finished the uncompleted work; how much of the finished composition was based on notes hand-written by Mozart discovered after his death, as his wife, Constanza, claimed? Mozart himself was deeply apprehensive about the Requiem and confided to Constanza that he was certain he was composing it for his own funeral. . The Requiem will be performed twice: first at Middleburg’s Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Saturday, December 4 at 5:30 PM. (Quader estimates that the Saturday performance will end at exactly the time Mozart died 219 years ago) and on Sunday,

Roberto Alagna, and also serves as Associate Conductor for the Fairfax Symphony, has always been an innovator. In 2008 he led the Piedmont Orchestra in a performance of Puccini’s Le Villi, the first time an opera has been performed in Fauquier County. Last year’s Nights in White Satin, billed as a rock/ symphony concert, played both its performances to standing room only audiences; Quader came down from the podium, picked up his electric bass guitar, and joined in a performance that had its sold-out audience standing, stomping and cheering. And this year is no exception: the orchestra, in partnership with Middleburg’s Piedmont Singers, will present the Mozart Requiem, its first-ever performance in Fauquier County., Mozart’s Requiem, one of his most popular works, became known to the general public through the Tony-award winning play and Oscar-winning movie, Amadeus, in which it forms a crucial plot element. . Mystery swirls around the work: who: was the anonymous figure who commissioned it, which of a score of

December 5 at 3 PM. at Highland School’s Center for the Performing Arts. Emmanuel Episcopal is home to the Piedmont Chorale, the brain child of Wendy Oesterling, who is also chorus and orchestra director at Fauquier’s Liberty High School. Oesterling created the Piedmont Singers in 1999. “We wanted to add a sacred concert to the festivities for Christmas in Middleburg, held yearly at the beginning of December. My idea was to give singers from all over the area an opportunity to sing sacred music that they might not otherwise have. And we got singers from as far away as Virginia Beach; people came from Frederick, Loudon, Clarke, Winchester. Just all over. So we presented the Christmas portion of Messiah. We had 36 singers, a string quintet, and an orchestra. The following year we performed three movements from Bach’s Christmas Oratorio.” Five years later Oesterling decided it was time to give the group a new name. “So we changed from the Christmas Choir to the Piedmont Singers, and expanded our activities. Now we offer two concerts

Orchestra continued from page 56 in December and a special presentation during Holy Week.” The Singers have offered major works by J.S. Bach, Britten, Vivaldi, Holst and others. In 2009 the Singers had the notable distinction of performing at Canterbury Cathedral in England. Earlier this fall, The Piedmont Symphony will kick off its 2010-11 season. Northern Lights, on October 31 at Highland School with a program called “Behind the Iron Curtain.” Amy Beth Horman will perform the Nielson Violin Concerto. Horman has been described by The Washington Post as being both a "winter tonic" and “having the stuff of greatness.” A graduate of the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique in Paris, Ms. Horman won the highly coveted Premier Prix in Solo Violin while there, competing against an international field of candidates. Her debut with the Fairfax Symphony was critically acclaimed: The Washington Post critic wrote “Violinist Amy Beth Glenn Quader, Horman showed she had the virtuosMusic Director ity and stamina necessary to navigate Beethoven’s colossal Violin Concerto...Horman traced soaring lines and rich textures with a golden, full tone that complemented the full-blooded support of the orchestra...” Of her playing of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in a recent appearance with the Bay-Atlantic Symphony (New Jersey), Music Director Jed Gaylin wrote: "Amy Beth gave yet another ravishing and electric performance with the BAS… She was truly inspired and inspiring. The audience was swept away." And of her debut with the New Mexico Symphony performing a Mozart violin concerto, Music Director Guillermo Figueroa said: "Ms. Horman is an excellent, refined performer. Her violinistic skills are of the highest order, with a fluent, polished technique, and a warm, appealing, burnished tone. …an exciting, outstanding violinist….a surefire hit with any audience." Works by Shostakovich, Glinka and Enescu will round out the October program. February will feature the orchestra’s annual Young Artists competition and student art contest, as well as works by Sibelius and Adams. Event Horizons in April will present the orchestra’s principal trumpet player, Patrick Niedich, in Artunian’s Trumpet Concerto in A flat major, and in June, Romancing the Romantics will showcase acclaimed pianist Rachel Franklin in the beloved Rachmaninoff Piano Concert No. 2. “This orchestra is very much in the top level of musical groups,” says Quader. “That’s because we have good people, and superior principle players. We’re increasing the quality level every year. We are the only semi professional orchestra in the region, with a core of 20 paid players. And Highland School, where the orchestra is based, is terrific. It’s a little hard to fit everyone on stage, but the acoustics are fantastic. People who come to hear us realize that they have a really high-quality orchestra right in their own back yard. “

erving the community authentic northern Italian dishes for nine years, Andrea and Amber Ferrero at Café Torino set up a family style restaurant that actively engages each customer in Torino energy. Rarely can you find a restaurant that encourages an open atmosphere and sharing conversations among separate tables. “We introduce people to other people,” laughed Amber. This encouragement helps make relationships among customers creating a Torino Family. Originally, from Torino, Italy, Andrea studied at culinary school to be a chef; with a change of mind after graduating, he pursued training as a pastry chef. Coming to the U.S. in 1991, Andrea began working in Warrenton as the pastry chef for Fantastico’s Restaurant, where he met his wife, Amber. The two, brought Café Torino to our community in June of 2001. Located in the front Dining continued on page 64 62

“Ask me what you want for lunch, and I’ll take care of you.” –Amber

Dining continued from page 62 corner of the Waterloo Shopping Center near Carousel Ice Cream, they provide an eclectic menu featuring hot dishes, sandwiches, pasta, salads and specials to satisfy any taste. “We enjoying being innovative in the kitchen,” Amber explained, often collaborating with her husband and their chef of eight years, José. Café Torino is open for breakfast, serving (in our opinion) the best scrambled eggs in town. With only one breakfast dish, scrambled eggs, bacon, and fresh bread this simple dish will surely not disappoint. Fresh croissants, aromatic coffee and espresso are also available.

“We serve dinner in a casual atmosphere, but we like to dress up the plates,” Andrea said. White tablecloths, table service, candle light and flavorful dinner entrees transform this café into a dinner destination. Open for dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, offering quite a different menu that features fresh salmon, tilapia, steak and recently added flounder. Updating the menu with seven newly created entrees, all items are served fresh from that morning, including basil, sage and rosemary grown from their garden. “Cooking is like reading music, if you know the notes you can make your own

symphony,” Andrea explained. Warrenton has thoroughly enjoyed the “symphony” from Andrea and Amber Ferrero for almost a decade. Café Torino is open for breakfast Monday – Friday 7:00am to 10:00am and Saturday 8:00am to 11:00am. Lunch is from 11:00am to 4:00pm and dinner is served Thursdays – Saturdays from 5:30pm to 9:00pm. Reservations for dinner are suggested but certainly not required. They also cater private party’s Italian style and create classic wedding cakes. Café Torino is located at 388 Waterloo Street, for more information call (540)347-2713.

A hot spot for lunch, grab a seat and dine in or choose to carry out. Lunch provides a variety of filling items, their most popular are Penne with Chicken and Asparagus and the Bolognese Sauce, made from fillet trimmings. They serve sandwiches, salads and hot dishes including fish. Sweets like raspberry or chocolate mousse, traditional cannolis, tiramisu, fruit tarts, and cookies are tantalizingly set on display and are the perfect complement to any lunch.

What’s New

Warrenton

Soon the leaves will begin to show their beautiful colors, or maybe not so much with the drought we have experienced, and our thoughts will be turning to all the holidays creeping up on us. The fall season brings about lots of wonderful fall activities for the whole family, so make sure you get out there and enjoy what we have to offer and check out some of the new businesses in town. Angels of Beauty has opened near the Harris Teeter and offers both men and women haircuts and various hair treatments. They also carry hair, nail and skincare products. After you get some special treatment, you can do the same for your car or truck. The White Horse Auto Wash, located where Friendly’s used to be, should be having their grand opening by the time this goes to print. Owner, Bob Rust, is really excited and now I am too. Bob offers a variety of car wash levels with all the special attention we desire and full detailing when you need it. Just to make it fun for everyone, they have installed “Super Sudser” water cannons to shoot soapy water at the cars as they go through, one is low for the kids and one is higher for the uninhibited adult. There will also be a Warrenton Riders Cup, from 1872, on display that was won by a relative of his. What fun! For more fun, stop by Play N Trade Video Games near Harris Teeter to try out the latest game before you decide to buy it. We can always say we are trying it out for our kids. The Villa at Suffield Meadows is now open with a host of amenities for all levels of living needs that provide all the comforts of home with top-notch care for your loved ones. The last new business to mention is a Marriage & Family Therapy

practice opened by Marianne Clyde on Ashby Street. You can see her website at MarianneClyde.com for more information. We have two businesses moving this month and both will be reopened by Oct 1st. The Galloping Grape is moving to Shirley Avenue, opposite the horse show grounds. The new space will be larger and allow her to add new merchandise, so stop by and check out her expanded stock of wine and tack. The shop that Galloping Grape is going into is currently occupied by NOVA Vacuums, which is moving to a larger space near the Taco Bell. The additional space will allow them to now sell and service sewing machines. All service for both vacuums and sewing machines is done on-site, nothing is shipped out. Just a few changes to note, Buckland Farms has opened their corn maze through November and their fall festival is in full swing. NOVA Medical & Urgent Care Center will now be open on Saturdays from 9am - 5pm. And, if you haven’t noticed Chevy Chase Bank is now sporting the name of its new owner, Capital One Bank. We have two businesses on the way, WaWa is trying to purchase and build a new station/store at the corner of Frost Avenue and Shirley Avenue. We will see if that one happens. But, work has started for a new Sprint store near Harris Teeter. They will be the first occupants in that section of the shopping center. Get out and enjoy the fall, it will be gone before we know it.
