f you have been by Molly’s Pub lately on a Friday evening or the Frost Diner on weekend mornings, you’ll know that motorcycle madness has reached Warrenton. I have married into this motorcycle

If you have ever had the opportunity to see or ride in “rolling thunder” every year on Memorial Day you will know what I mean. BMW (Bavarian Motor Works) is loved for its long-distance reliability and specialized look. In 1923 BMW presented their first motorcycle at the German Motor Show in Berlin. For a company that was routed in the business of aircraft production this showing was a huge success. Riders began to appreciate the experience that the aircraft manufacturer gave to motorcycle production, light alloy which was used on the pistons for the first time, and a high standard of construction and extreme reliability. The Ducati brothers in Italy founded the electrical components company in 1926. But during WWII the Italian government took over the company and began the development of motorcycles. Cagiva purchased the company in 1985. Since its beginning, Ducati has gone from power to power plus. You can always recognize a Ducati without ever seeing the name on the tank. hen Monica, Rachel, Ross, Phoebe, Chandler and Joey began their weekly visits to Central Perk coffeehouse in 1994, no one could have predicted what would come next. Friends all around the United States started to culminate at coffee shops and tea rooms. Since then, thousands of new businesses have sprung up around the coffee and tea market, including several in the Warrenton area. Each coffeehouse and tea room here seems to have its own unique atmosphere, specialty and purpose. At Black Wolf Coffee, which is attached to Foster’s Grille on Lee H i g h w a y,

visitors enter through the side door into a comfy-cozy room filled with oversized sofas and chairs, reminiscent of Central Perk. The home-style décor is also apparent in the antique hutch set up for customers to fix up their cups o’ Joe, the artwork hung for enjoyment, the coat rack and the baskets and shelves that line the seating area, stuffed with board games and reading material.
Not only is Black Wolf Coffee a place to sit and relax with a latte and a good book, it’s also a Wi-Fi hot spot, enabling the public to pull up a chair, boot up their laptops and access the Internet. “A lot of people come here to work,” said Lisa Kay Howard, Manager, “especially on weekdays.” Lisa says that Black Wolf serves a lot of “regulars” every day but also sees a multitude of new faces including customers from the local Howard Johnson hotel located just behind the coffee shop and students and teachers from the nearby high school. Business groups hold several meetings there each month. “I’m a customer here, too,” said Lisa. “I come here on my days off. The coffee is the best, the atmosphere is great and the people who come here are fantastic.” Ruth Boddery of Amissville could not agree more. “I come here all the time after I go to the gym,” she said “I like to treat myself and Lisa always greets me See Coffee on page 12

Coffee continued from page 10 with a smile and a sugar-free toffee and vanilla iced coffee. It’s THE best coffee in town – worth going over the speed bumps for,” Ruth jokes, referring to the asphalt jolts customers stride across on their way into the shop to get their iced or steaming jolts of caffeine. Not far from Black Wolf Coffee, just caddycorner across the street, is a whole different experience in coffee at Café Torino. This bistrostyle establishment is bright, airy and full of laughter and love, especially when owners Andréa and Amber Ferrero, are present. The obviously happily married couple love owning a local business that mirrors Andréa’s Italian heritage and it trickles down to their employees and customers. The café is decorated rather simply with tables and chairs around the room and walls lined with Warrenton photographer Jordan Koephe’s framed photos. However, the simplicity does not breed a quiet crowd, the café is often filled with groups of people chatting amongst themselves or across the tables to other gatherers.
“It’s a very laid back atmosphere,” said Amber. “Most of the customers can just sit down and we already know what they want.” Café Torino started out as a coffee shop and bakery in 2001, but the Ferrero’s soon found their customers wanting more, so they evolved into a “restaurant and bakery that also serves coffee,” said Amber. Andréa boasts that he and Amber make the best coffee and breakfast. “We use the Italian espresso bean,” he explained, “it’s very flavorful without tasting burnt.” As for the breakfast – “You can have whatever you want – as long as it’s scrambled eggs and bacon, or bacon and scrambled eggs,” he jokes. Of course, being in a bakery, one can always opt for the more sinful breakfast with five different types of croissants, made fresh daily, to choose from.

“A lot of people use Café Torino as a meeting place and most of the customers know each other,” said Amber. “It’s a very social place,” added Andréa.

Amber noted that there are usually several people waiting outside when they open in the morning. The early-comers normally rush in, grab a coffee, maybe some pastries, and rush off again, but by mid-morning the café is buzzing again with the after-the-bus-takes-the-kids-to-school crowd who come to enjoy the ambiance, the company, the food and drink and just hang out.

Street is Old Town Warrenton, home to another specialty coffee shop, Bartleby’s Café and the town’s sole tea room, Madison Tea Room. Almost hidden under the sidewalk on Main Street is Bartleby’s – in fact the only visible trace of the café from the road is the business’s sign attached to the brick façade of the quaint office building. Coffee continued from page 13 and visitors who frequent the café for it’s unique menu of gourmet coffees, smoothies, pastries, ice cream and lunch items, including their famous chicken salad. Manager Richard Cole said that many locals stop by in the morning for a coffee and newspaper on their way to work and several of the Old Town shops hold business meetings there. He mentioned that he sees a lot of the staff from Hartman Jewelers, which is directly across Main from the café. “We live over there,” said Ashley Norris, manager of Hartman Jewelers, “literally, we are there two to three times a day for coffee, lunch, snacks, ice cream, smoothies.” Ashley said that they have grown fond of the Coles. “They are really super people – they always put me in a good mood,” she noted, “and their coffee is awesome.” Richard also sees a good deal of workers stop in to take advantage of their Wi-Fi capabilities. Bartleby’s is great for working, said Richard, customers can get on the Internet and do their business while helping themselves to the brewed coffee refill station during their stay. Much like Café Torino, Bartleby’s has a bright and energetic atmosphere, but this café is filled with amusing dog and coffee art, a tribute to the business’s mascot – co-owner Ralph Nussbaumer’s German Shepherd named (what else?) Bartleby. Café-style tables and chairs are also set up outside Bartleby’s below, on and above sidewalk level for unique views of the town and different perspectives for people-watching. Additionally, the café has erected a mini-stage outside for live entertainment. “Sometimes on Friday nights we have a DJ or a guitar player,” said Richard. Just a few short blocks away the Madison Tea Room is providing customers a very different atmosphere, one more

synonymous with the days of yesteryear. Madison Tea Room is multi-dimensional and laden with Warrenton history. The tea room was originally the town’s best known barber shop, also called Madison, and was notably the town’s sole African-American-owned business for quite some time, said the current owner Georgia Deardoff. Madison remained a barber shop, although changing management several times, until 2001 when its owner decided to turn it into a tea room. Georgia bought the tea room just a year ago along with Jimmie’s Market right next door – a business that has been a staple of Main Street for the past 68 years. To visit the tea room, patrons enter through Jimmie’s, but upon walking through the side entrance they simultaneously step into Madison Tea Room and back in time to a slower, more Victorian time. The room is ornately decorated with elegantly-clothed tables, fine China and antique silver. Surrounding the seating area are antique tables, shelves and banquets laden with antiquities for sale. Sitting near the center of one wall, completely out of place and yet looking very natural in its location is a barbershop chair – a tribute to the history of Madison. Georgia likes serving tea in the traditional style and calls her tea room “a quiet, sophisticated retreat from your hectic day.” She sees a lot of groups at the tea room for business meetings, collaborative sessions, celebrations like bridal and baby showers, Secretary’s Day as well as people just looking for a quiet social gathering place for no specific reason at all. “We’ve had lots of showers here as well as Red Hat groups, Daughters of the American Revolution and etiquette lessons,” said Georgia. She noted fondly how fun it is to see young boys and girls come in for birthday parties where they are treated to etiquette lessons and taught “how to sit still, the history of tea, and what to do with table utensils. sophisticated young ladies in this area,” boasted Georgia.
“The service was lovely,” said Martha, “they explained all of the different teas to us and the ladies had a great time.” Martha said that not only did the group enjoy tea and lunch, they also enjoyed perusing the antiques in the room.
The tea room now uses all loose leaf teas to give customers a more ceremonial aspect of the whole tea experience, but they also serve coffee (local from Sperryville), cappuccinos, lattes and a lunch menu full of soups, sandwiches, quiche, sweets and bread – all made in the Madison Tea Room kitchen. “They have such a good selection to choose from,” said Martha Collins who is new to Warrenton, “from the very basic to the very elaborate.” Martha was part of the Chantilly Red Hat Mamas, who like to have a unique outing once a month. After marrying a Warrenton man, Martha convinced her group to come to the Madison Tea Room for one of their outings and the group “just fell in love with it”. Although the group was new to the Madison Tea Room, they are no strangers to tea rooms in general, and they gave Georgia high praise for her shop, food, presentation and service. They especially enjoyed “the quaintness of it – the

Fauquier Community Theatre Begins 30th Season with Great Line Up by Dr. Robert Iadeluca In succession throughout the fall and winter, FCT will present “The Crucible,” “A Christmas Story,” and “Steel Magnolias.”
T
he Fauquier Community Theatre is celebrating its 30th season as it prepares for a smash 2007-2008 lineup beginning with the Broadway hit musical, “Damn Yankees” in September and concluding with the ever popular “Annie” in May.
Mark your calendars for the initial three-weekend performances of Damn Yankees, the winner of the 1956 Tony Award for Best Musical, which opens on Friday, September 7th. Directed by Evelyn Rice, this classic Broadway hit tells the story of Joe Boyd, played by veteran actor and FCT newcomer, Justin Timpane, who sells his soul to a devilish salesman, Applegate (veteran Allen McRae) to ensure the Washington Senators baseball team
wins the league pennant against the Yankees. Damn Yankees holds the honor of being the second presentation to be performed by the Fauquier Community Theatre shortly after the organization’s creation in the summer of 1978. Light and fast-paced, the two acts contain a total of 15 musical presentations including “Heart,” “Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, Mo,” and the well-known “Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets,” sung by Aubrey Stanton. Following this is the award-winning play, The Crucible, by renowned playwright Arthur Miller. This will open Friday, October 19th. The Crucible is generally regarded as one of the best plays of the modern era, due to its deep and captivating plot. Set against the backdrop of the Salem witch trials in the late 17th century, it is about a town which begins a mad hunt for witches that did not exist. Miller brings out the absurdity of the incident with the theme of truth and righteousness. Check out the theater’s website for their holiday schedule. Beginning February 29, 2008 the FCT will delight local audiences with Steel Magnolias, a comedy-drama set in a Louisiana hair salon about the bond among a group of six neighborhood regulars. Written by Robert Harling, it spans 16 months in the lives of these Southern ladies exposing their rivalries and eccentricities and those of their ancestors. Families, feelings, pasts, futures, hopes, and dreams are shared with each other and with the audience. There are plenty of jokes by people of every age and gender. Those who saw See Theatre on page 20

Theatre continued from page 18 the 1989 film version starring Sally Field may enjoy seeing the live onstage version. Bringing this season of well-known hits to a close will be Annie, opening in mid spring of 2008. It tells the story of an 11-year-old orphan girl living in Depression era New York City. She goes through various obstacles trying to locate her parents and, in the process, ends up being adopted by billionaire Oliver Warbucks. It is renowned for its story line and its catchy songs recognizable to this day. Winner of the 1977 Tony Award for Best Musical, Annie is based upon the popular Harold Gray comic strip, “Little Orphan Annie.”
The FCT is especially grateful to Ed Moore and Brookside Communities for their generous gift of $5,000 toward the initial three-weekend performance. Mr. Moore’s daughter and friends were active in FCT and he often attends what he describes as fantastic performances. Director Evelyn Rice says that the cast is already investing the money toward costumes, set expenses, lights, sound and special effects. “I decided to become a sponsor,” Mr. Moore said, “because I believe in the long-term commitment to the community.” In the early years, FCT performed in a number of schools, eventually moving in 1980 to what was labeled “The Loft” above the old movie theatre on North Third Street in Warrenton. It remained there for sixteen years. With the closing of the Vint Hill Farms Army base in 1996 its movie theatre became
available. A lease was signed and after tremendous volunteer help and many months of renovations, FCT opened that Fall season with the Broadway hit Evita. The Fauquier Community Theatre welcomes people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds to be involved in a broad spectrum of quality community theatre productions, training opportunities and educational programs that will improve the appreciation and understanding of the arts. Its vision, according to Don Richardson, President, is to own a permanent home, become one of the top rated community theatres in Northern Virginia, and to be recognized for the quality of its productions, educational programming, and welcoming atmosphere. FCT is outgrowing the old Vint Hill movie theater. Negotiations are currently taking place to obtain a permanent home. Ticket prices are $14 for plays and $16 for musicals. Seniors (60 and over)

And the Award Goes To…
he Best of the Best. That is what we are calling the winners of the second annual Warrenton Lifestyle Magazine’s Best of Warrenton Awards as chosen by thousands of our readers. A few months ago we sent out over 12,000 ballots asking our readers to tell us what they felt were the best of our great Warrenton area businesses, people, places and organizations in 78 categories. The citizens responded well, both online and in writing and we officially announced the winners at a party at the Holiday Inn Express on August 16th. All of the winners were invited along with members of the Town government and VIPs and all were treated to a fun evening with food and beverages provided by the team at Legends Catering. One of our intentions with The Warrenton Lifestyle Magazine is to continually celebrate all of the terrific things we have in Warrenton. Another is to give greater exposure of our
businesses and organizations to the people that live here, over half of whom are commuters, without promoting their competition from other tax bases. We also think it is important to continually revisit our community as changes occur on a daily basis. Piedmont Press & Graphics President and Warrenton Lifestyle Magazine Co-Publisher, Tony Tedeschi, opened the evening with encouraging remarks for all businesses in Warrenton, complimenting everyone on their excellence in business performance. Councilman John “Sparky” Lewis, this year’s Favorite Elected Official, added his thoughts for the brighter future that Warrenton holds for all of us while disclosing near-term projects of both the Town and the Partnership for Warrenton, including an outdoor amphitheater. We quickly moved into announcing the runners-up and winners while guests cheered each other as names were announced. We decided to publish two runners-up as well as the winners. They represent the many more wonderful businesses and people that did not finish first but are obvious winners also.
The list of winners is as varied as Warrenton itself. National chains, mom and pop businesses, new stores and long-time landmarks were all winners. For example, 35 different restaurants received votes in the Best All-Around Restaurant category. So consider the Best Of list as just a “slice” of the thousands of wonderful businesses, places, and people we have to offer. People will debate the winners. The most important thing is that local residents have an opinion and passion about our great Town and region. We believe most competition makes for better business and better choices for our citizens. In no categories were the winners anywhere near unanimous although there were some clear winners. In others, there were tightly contested races that came down to the final days. There were some great surprises, but, in our opinion, no real disappointments. So, agree with the people who voted or not, but we urge you to take the time to find out your own favorites for next year. It could be someplace you haven’t even heard of until today. All the while, Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer will be laughing. And God bless him. Beamer and all of Hokie Nation deserve a laugh or two. The Hokies will get started on September 1 with a home game against the East Carolina Pirates/Christians. After what happened in Blacksburg last April, saying the first game will be emotional is an understatement. The Hokies are well known for great pre-game tailgates and ravenous, loyal fans. But seriously, Tech is the class of this year’s ACC. Pundits and pollsters consistently have them in the top ten in all preseason polls. No other ACC teams crack the top 25 consistently except Florida State. “We think we have a really good team, and we are hoping to have a really good season – maybe even a run at the BCS Championship. Not to worry, LSU is only picked #2 nationally and to win the SEC in EVERY SINGLE POLL on radio, television, in print and/ or on the internet. There are folks out there who say you can lose an early non-conference game to a power house school and still make the BCS Championship if you run the table. There are also people who said that making a movie about a dysfunctional cartoon family with a patriarch fond of donuts and beer was a bad idea, and other people who still think there are big piles of big rockets and bombs in Iraq. He grew up riding Yamahas and says that selling Yamahas is easy because of the reliability of the product. He explains that his customers are a free spirited

Bike owners are just as varied as the machines they drive. Some like to ride in groups and join clubs, some prefer to ride alone. They all are interested in the “twisties” though, of which Fauquier has many. All cyclists are looking for that quite, lonely curving byway. Riders I have met are safety minded and courteous. The fun part is stopping along the ride or going to a rally just to hear the “bench racing” (tall

Friends ask me when I will get my own bike. I say for now I’m content to be a passenger, wearing my bright red motorcycle jacket and my Harley boots with flames!
