“In the construction industry we often refer to the build process as a rollercoaster ride. There are a lot of hills and valleys throughout a project’s life cycle. A good relationship with your contractor is the key to a successful project, and will guarantee that you are smiling when you get off the ride.” Tim Burch, CR President, Burch Builders Group President, National Association of the Remodeling Industry, METRO DC Chapter, 2008

here’s just something about Fauquier County that gives people a sense of home immediately upon arriving. One of the singularly best aspects of small town living is knowing that you can count on your neighbors for help in any situation, however sometimes even folks with the best of intentions don’t know exactly how to help. According to Karen White, President of the Afro-American Historical Association (AAHA) in The Plains, her organization gets several calls from clergymen and community members asking for resources to enable them to help others who have been displaced or disadvantaged in some way. “I think people just see the AfroAmerican part of our name and they call us for help, but it’s just not in the realm of what we do,” said White. Realizing that there is a need in our community for such assistance for disadvantaged people of all colors, she wanted to “reach out and make people aware”. In her relentless research of history, White said she has come to realize that many people live their lives oppressed and the community surrounding them that could do something to change the situation isn’t always aware of what’s going on. She would like to see that this doesn’t continue in the county where she was born and raised.

celebration White was introduced to Julie Turner, a member of the Fauquier County Democratic Committee’s (FCDC) Outreach Committee (OC). “I mentioned to her wanting to have a workshop about the services available to the citizens of Fauquier County,” remembered White. Her vision for the workshop was

to produce a resource manual to show people where to go for help, increase our membership and get more youth (people age 18 to 30) involved in the community,” said Turner. She noted that when members of the community need help they often turn to public servants like teachers, doctors or clergy members for assistance first. Knowing this, they are hoping to get as many of those people to their workshop as possible since they are typically the first contact people make when help is sought. “We are focused on the underserved portion of our population,” said Stokely, “and we need to get more services to these people.” According to Stokely needs come in many different forms but the most sought after are food, housing, healthcare and social services.

simple: to let the citizens of Fauquier County know about any service that could be a “positive benefit to the people we want to bring light to”. Turner, along with OC coCommunity Continued page 8 chairs, Claire Stokely and Christine Plank, welcomed the opportunity to get involved and bring light to the community about helping others in need, which is right in line with their own goal of getting involved in the community and working on issues that need to be resolved. Turner noted that they are hoping the workshop can do many things for the community and both the FCDC and AAHA. “We are hoping to FCDC Outreach volunteers at the Warrenton Peace work collaboratively Garden dedication at Rady Park June 1.

Community cont’d from page 6 “We want to make others aware of how to advocate for someone in need,” she said. While they are hoping to help the underserved citizens of the county, the FCDC/OC wants this seminar to go far beyond that; they’re true wish is to see all of the community get involved so that we are all aware of the problems facing some of our neighbors so that we may all be able to help in one manner or another. “Don’t expect your community to come to you,” pled Turner, “go out into your community.” “Just take baby steps,” advised Plank, “you start by getting out there and seeing what you can do. If you just start, somewhere, anywhere, you’ll soon see the difference that it makes and it improves you as well as your community.” Together the AAHA and FCDC/OC have coordinated the Housing and Health Care Seminar which will take place

Katie Stokely, Lisa Richard, ( former) Sec of State Madeline Albright and FCDC Chair David Roos. at the AAHA headquarters in The Plains on Saturday, September 20. The seminar will be broken into two portions; the first, dealing with healthcare will begin at 9 a.m. and will include presentations and information from the Fauquier Hospital, Fauquier County Department of Social Services, TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), Fauquier County Department of Adult Services/Adult Protective Services, Fauquier County Community Services Board, and Fauquier County Health Department’s Healthy Babies/Healthy Families. The second portion of the seminar will begin at 12:45 p.m. and will include information presented by the Fauquier Family Shelter Services, Inc., Fauquier Community Action Committee, Central Virginia Housing Coalition and Fauquier County Housing Coalition. The FCDC/OC has also invited several of the area’s

The FCDC/OC

The Housing and Health Care Seminar is just one of the many events and services that the FCDC/OC performs. While the FCDC is concerned mainly with increasing voter registration in Fauquier County and educating the citizens about the benefits of their party, the OC, however, takes a more involved approach to help the cause and their parent organization. The OC was formed as an arm of the FCDC within the last two years and has approximately eight fullycommitted members who focus their efforts on finding needs within the county and implementing means by which to resolve them. “As an outreach program we encourage all of our members to get out into the community in any way they can,” said Stokely, “and our members are very active and offer help in whatever capacity they can - giving advice, knocking in doors, making phone calls, etc.” By keeping tabs on the needs of the community and trying to alleviate the needs here, the FCDC/OC is also able to keep Democratic candidates and elected officials informed of the

politicians to attend the seminar and get involved. Fauquier County Supervisor for The Plains, Holder Trumbo as well as Peter Swartz, Fauquier County Supervisor for Marshall, said that they would come. “We are really hoping that this event will go well,” said Stokely, “if it does, we’d like to make it a quarterly event covering different topics of community needs and being hosted in various locations.” Stokely already has in mind creating a seminar on domestic violence to take place in the early new year, perhaps in Warrenton and others focused on the Latino community, the elderly and our youth.

Community cont’d from page 10 issues facing the citizens here. “You can get a candidate into office, but they need to have their finger on the pulse of the community, said Turner, “that’s why we try to get more outreach benefactors to the local and state meetings - to help keep our politicians more accountable. The ladies at the head of the FCDC/OC are very enthusiastic about the future of our nation and community and have seen a positive effect locally since they started their committee. “We’re growing and we can really change things, chirped Turner, “politically, socially, and economically. They all agree that it couldn’t be a better time to be a Democrat and they are determined to help turn our purple state blue. “Because of our national candidate, we’re getting a lot of attention, effervesced Stokely, “this year the county fair was a lot more fun; there was more foot traffic and a lot more interaction with the Republicans, who had a booth right across from us. They also observed that this has been a banner time for registering new voters in Fauquier County, partly due to the high volume of publicity the national campaigns have wrought but also because of the increased involvement the FCDC has had in the local community. Their work serves as a win-win for the community in their eyes; they are helping to make Fauquier County a better place by helping meet the needs of the people here and in return they hope that the recipients of their assistance will realize that their needs were met by Democrats and therefore vote for the candidates in that party come election time. The FCDC/OC will be represented on September 13 at the Eva Walker Park Health Fair and Community Picnic. The event begins at noon and is designed to offer health screenings to county residents. The FCDC will be there to provide information about their organization and some of the candidates for the upcoming election and voter registration. 12

The FCDC meets the third Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. at the Warren Green Building, 10 Hotel Street, and Old Town Warrenton. For more information call 540-253-5737 or visit www.fauquierdemocrats.org.

The AAHA

While outreach is a part of the goal of the Afro-American Historical Association, they have a much more entailed mission which includes preserving, and to make aware, the African American history and to hand it down to younger generations. The AAHA is supported totally by membership dues, donations and grants, said White, and are a solo organization although they have been recognized as a unique and valuable institute nationally. Located in The Plains, the AAHA contains a museum, auditorium, local history and genealogy archives, and a reference library. “We keep archives of every aspect of African American life in Fauquier Karen White in front of a photo of her County here, said White, “death notices, censuses, newspaper clippings,

We even have a whole binder full of notices of people running away from Fauquier County.” White was referring to the practice of the early to mid-1800s whereby slave owners would publish a notice in the local newspaper announcing the disappearance of one of their slaves in the hopes that they would be caught and returned. “The museum starts with Africa and moves along the time line to Jamestown and then into Fauquier County, which was formed in 1759,” explained White.

Community cont’d from page 14 The goal of the museum, she said, was to make every child feel like they are a part of history. “American history books leave so much out, said White, “it’s hard sometimes to turn a page in a textbook and be able to find something you can relate to. White’s hope is that the AAHA museum will be a place where local black citizens can find something that makes them feel more tied to the community and the history here as well as being a place where people of any color can go and learn more about their community and the experience of the African Americans in Fauquier County. They have also realized the importance in the technology of today and how it can help preserve centuries of history. The AAHA has uploaded their records into a database that can be accessed from their web site. They have also uploaded a listing of what their reference library entails.

While they are open to the public for group and individual tours and often host events of their own, they are also busy with many research projects to learn more about the African American experience in Fauquier County.

Simultaneously, they are attempting to locate and document heretofore unknown burial grounds in the county as well as tracking down local churches where blacks held membership prior to the end of the Civil War. “It’s a real labor of love to preserve the history of those who appreciate it and use our services, said White.

“There’s No Place Like Home”: Nationally acclaimed photographer Sunny Reynolds teams up with management company to create an environmentally friendly atmosphere in more ways than one. Have you ever traveled on an adventurous trip or dreamed of going somewhere just to escape home? Then, when you return home, you are filled with utter contentment to be where your surroundings comfort and embrace you. There are many individuals just like you, including Sunny Reynolds. Sunny is a nationally a c c l a i m e d professional photographer who lives and works here in Warrenton. She is extremely wellknown for her photography and for the individual private lessons she gives to her students. She has been commissioned by many local businesses (Hampton Inn, Wachovia, The Fauquier Bank, Fauquier Hospital and more) to capture various subjects on film. Recently, Sunny was commissioned by the Weissberg Corp. to capture the essence of Old Town in their new building on Blackwell Road. In her dramatic, largescale, black and white photographs of Old Town, you can examine and explore the scenery, yet still feel the charisma and charm of Warrenton. It is truly like “coming home”. Sunny, a world traveler to exotic locations such as Tanzania, Chile, Peru, India, Morocco, Guatemala, Galapagos Islands, Costa Rica and many others, was chosen to capture the essence of Warrenton because of her experience in immortalizing the amazing qualities of her subjects, particularly landscape scenes. She has an incredible eye for detail, substance and most of all, character and intrigue, whether it’s capturing the open mouth of a Tiger while on safari or a still photo of a historic building here in Old Town. 20

Weissberg Corp. selected Sunny not only for her immense talent and experience, but also because she lives and works in Warrenton. The company has made a commitment to the Town of Warrenton and its environment not only in photographic representation, but while building. For instance, during the planning stages, they decided to go as “green” as possible. One example is the use of cotton insulation comprised of 80% recycled blue jeans. Additionally, Weissberg has incorporated 100% biodegradable sealants and adhesives, paperless drywall, ceiling tiles and grids made of recycled materials, and low VOC paint. The company even encourages their tenants to utilize PaperStone countertops (100% recycled material), Kirei board cabinets, Marmoleum flooring, and Interface flooring (made up of 100% recycled material). The Weissberg Corp. building, located at 28 Blackwell Park Lane, is the new structure off Blackwell Road, behind the CVS in Blackwell Park. The building will be home for many business including Bohler Engineering and F1 Computer Solutions, Inc. If you are in the building, or just passing by, wander through the lobby and take a few moments to enjoy Sunny’s beautiful photographs which are guaranteed to capture your interest and delight. Remember, no matter how far you travel away from Warrenton, “There’s No Place Like Home” once you return. The individuals and businesses in this community are dedicated to keeping intact its charm and small town attitude that it is truly a wonderful “home” to return to time and time again. For more information on Sunny Reynold’s photography or her travel company, go to www.biotrektours.com. For more information about the Weissberg Corp. or its new offices, please call 540-341-0099. Clinical Depression is a debilitating illness and one of the leading causes of disability in the U.S.

DEPRESSION Anxiety Chronic Pain Addiction

Some of the symptoms might be constant fatigue or loss of energy, diminished ability to concentrate, lack of interest in former pleasures, feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness or helplessness, diminished sexual drive or a change in weight either up or down. There may be recurrent thoughts of suicide or death or a feeling that life is passing you by. While medication may help to stabilize the illness, cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy can help the sufferer gain insights and modify his/her thoughts and feelings.

We are proud to present part two of the winners of the third annual Warrenton Lifestyle Magazine’s Best of Warrenton Awards as chosen by over 1600 ballots. My family and I have had a lot of fun during the past month distributing the awards to the businesses and people that make our Town a wonderful place to live and shop. We did our best to personally congratulate all of the winners; your smiles and reactions are priceless. One of our missions with The Warrenton Lifestyle Magazine is to continually celebrate all of the terrific things we have in Warrenton. Another is to give greater exposure of our businesses and organizations to the people that live here, over half of whom are commuters, without promoting the competition from other tax bases. The list of winners is as varied as Warrenton itself. National chains, mom and pop businesses, new stores and

long-time landmarks were all winners. So consider the Best Of list as just a “slice” of what is offered here. People will debate who won. That’s great. It is important that local residents have an opinion and passion about our great Town and region. It’s why we publish the list of runner’s up in each category to offer other fine choices in our community. We believe most competition makes for better business and better options for our residents. So, agree with the people who voted or not, but we urge you to take the time to explore our streets to find out your own favorites for next year. It could be someplace or someone you haven’t even heard of until today. Thank you, the readers of The Warrenton Lifestyle Magazine, for caring enough to vote. And now to the winners, part 2…

Best Local Entertainer/Band Elizabeth Lawrence

Best Nightspot Molly’s Irish Pub

Elizabeth Lawrence is a woman with many gifts and we are delighted that she shares her powerful, soulful voice with us at local venues. Elizabeth’s slightly eclectic repertoire includes Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi and Bob Dylan and cites KoKo Taylor and Katie Webster as major musical inspirations. On stage, her performance is thoroughly engaging as she and her band of extremely talented musicians have as much fun with the music as the audience. After recovering from recent throat surgery, Elizabeth gave a comeback performance at Molly’s Irish Pub along with Steve Hagedorn, Ron Soldo and Jay Thomas that rocked the house. Don’t miss her next performance: www. elizabethlawrence.com.

Molly’s Irish Pub is no stranger to the Best of Warrenton awards. In 2006 alone they won six awards including Best Bar and Best Place for a Night out with Friends. This year, Molly’s is holding strong to its champion title of Best Nightspot, winning the award for the third year in a row. They’ve also now won Best Saturday Night Date Spot. New to the Best of Warrenton categories this year was the award for Best Place to Meet People, also awarded to Molly’s Irish Pub. Located on the corner of Main and 2nd Street in Old Town, Molly’s provides customers a social gathering to meet with friends, watch sporting events, enjoy live music, and eat delicious food in an Irish themed pub. Owners Laurie and Kitty Enright are wonderful supporters of all things Warrenton.

Favorite Elected Official Mayor George B. Fitch This isn’t the first time Mayor Fitch has been very well received by Warrentonians and don’t expect it to be the last. In 2006, Mayor Fitch was voted Best Elected Official. Here in 2008, he has won the award again. Mayor Fitch has been at the helm of one of his most ambitious projects since taking office. The plan is to build a plant at the county landfill that will convert waste into energy – enough energy to power the homes in Warrenton. His plan is to have this plant up and running before the end of his term. The project is receiving interest from domestic leaders and even foreign countries. Honorable Mention: Charlie Ray Fox Sparky Lewis Terry Nyhous

Best Local Journalist Don del Rosso – Fauquier TimesDemocrat Don del Rosso has been a journalism fixture in Warrenton as far back as anyone can remember. His work helped launch the Fauquier Magazine some two decades ago as well as the Fauquier Citizen. When the Citizen was acquired by Times Community Papers, Fauquier County remained fortunate that Don became the lead writer for their publications here. “Don is not afraid to ask the tough questions,” former Fauquier TimesDemocrat Editor Robin Earl said. “He is respectful, always, but doesn’t shy away from difficult issues or uncomfortable topics. Once he’s got the facts, he tells a story that puts them in perspective.” Don del Rosso is Fauquier County’s best local journalist. Honorable Mention: Betsy Parker George Rowand

Best Teacher Richard Deardoff It would seem appropriate that the recipient of the Best School would also have the Best Teacher. Lo and behold, it’s true. Mr. Richard Deardoff, a World History and Government teacher at Fauquier High School, wasn’t far from winning last year either, finishing just behind Nina Anderson last year. Mr. Deardoff has brought together his classes at Fauquier with such groups as Southern Fauquier Historical Society and the Civil War Preservation Trust, not only educate students, but to get them involved outside of class. Honorable Mention: Ben McCartney Kathleen Evans Lisa Miller Nina Anderson

It’s great when people enjoy where they work and what they do. It’s even better when it’s a place like the hospital. For the second year in a row, the Fauquier Hospital has been voted Best Place to Work by its peers. In 1925, Fauquier Hospital started with just 20 beds. Today, with over 1,100 employees and over 86 beds to accommodate, the Planetree affiliated hospital’s goal looks to maximize personal care and welcome family members. That means the Hospital staff pays attention to the little things, as well as the big ones. Don’t forget about the Bistro restaurant located in the Hospital.

Best Local Area School Fauquier High School The oldest high school in Fauquier County and currently overseen by Principal Roger Sites, Fauquier High School (FHS) opened its doors to secondary school students in 1963. As a fully accredited high school, FHS lives by its motto to “provide instruction which will enable students to live productively in society.” In 2006, Fauquier High School was voted Best Local School by the readers of the Warrenton Lifestyle. We think Roger Sites leadership of a superb staff is why so many readers chose FHS. Honorable Mention: Highland School PB Smith Elementary Brumfield Elementary

T

hat is the term sociologists apply to me and others who grew up in the 1930s. I am a person who remembers the crash of the stock market on October 29, 1929 (Black Tuesday). I was nine years old at the time. I am a person who remembers reading about and hearing my elders talk about the bank failures snowballing as desperate bankers called in loans which borrowers did not have time or money to repay. I remember construction slowing down and almost ceasing. I remember depositors becoming worried about their deposits and beginning massive withdrawals. I remember the sudden changes in the life of my family and those of my friends. For example, at Thanksgiving time just a month later the turkey continued on for days as soup was made off the bones. At Christmas we found ourselves opening gifts carefully so we could use the paper and string again. Rags were valuable. They were used when impregnated with Vicks Vaporub to wrap around sore throats. Adhesive tape not yet existing, we created balls of string made up of shorter pieces tied together. There came into existence an expression which I never hear any more. “Use it up, wear it out, make it do, do without.” Using it up meant primarily never throwing away any food. Portions became smaller and if any food was left over, it went into the ice box (we had no refrigerator) for later consumption. Wearing it out meant making objects last as long as possible, whether it was clothing or tools or furniture. 42

Before shoes fell apart, they were given to the shoemaker for repair. New shoes were out of the question. Socks with holes in them were darned. Making it do called for imagination. Every house contained “stuff” in the attic or cellar which had been sitting there for some time. A bit of thought enabled these formerly useless items to

clothing. Everything else was “it would be nice to have.” And out of those three, in my home only one – food - had to be bought. We didn’t seem to be in danger of foreclosure and clothing was already in our closets. We just weren’t going to buy anything new. We needed to “save for a rainy day,” another expression I never hear any more. Four months after the stock market crash my mother died from a lingering illness. I had no brothers or sisters and my father was a disabled veteran from World War I receiving a total disability pension. It was meager but enough to help us survive. Now I was not only a “child of the depression” but a motherless nine-year old learning quickly how to grow up. My father, fortunately, did not have to hit the unemployment lines. The fathers of many of my friends did.

Dr. Robert B. Iadeluca, born September 25, 1920 is pictured here at the age of 16 at his high school graduation in 1937. The Great Depression lasted from 1929 to approximately 1939. become usable again. Young children who were still in the imaginative stage were valuable at coming up with ideas. Doing without forced us to understand the true meaning of the word “need.” It boiled down to the realization that there are only three basic needs – food, shelter, and

All around me signs of the depression deepened. Most women in those days were homemakers and one out of every four men was unemployed. The father of a buddy of mine who was a skilled Scandinavian cabinet maker found himself creating a putt-putt golf course in the hopes of making a few pennies. Fathers of other friends of mine were fishermen off the South Shore of Long Island where I lived. They struggled to make ends meet. Families who were not able to meet their expenses were tasting the bitterness of foreclosure of their homes. Incomes fell from 20% to 50%. Historical records show that by 1933, 13,000 of the 25,000 banks had failed. Surviving banks became even more conservative in their lending and made fewer loans. WARRENTON Locals to Walk 60 Miles DURING Three Days in 2008 WASHINGTON, DC Breast Cancer 3-Day Virginia Walkers Encourage Local Residents to Join the Breast Cancer Movement

Warrenton, Virginia — Angela Austin, Carrie Carter, Debbie Eisele, Julie Parsons, Lora Parsons, Holly Tedeschi and Carrie Wilvert of Warrenton, VA will join thousands of other dedicated women and men at the 2008 Washington, DC Breast Cancer 3-Day benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust. After months of training and fundraising, participants will walk 60 miles during three days to raise awareness and funds for critical research and community outreach programs. Our team, Hot Mamas on Foot, consists of seven women (mothers) who have been touched by breast cancer in some way, whether it be a friend or family member. We’ve dedicated a lot of our personal family time to train for this event and made a lot of new friends along the way. The 2008 Washington, DC Breast Cancer 3-Day will start on Friday morning, October 3 and end with the Closing Ceremony on Sunday afternoon, October 5. The walkers will cover about 20 miles a day, traveling at their own pace. The walkers will be supported by hundreds of volunteer crew members who will provide meals, liquid and snack stops, gear transport, hot showers, portable restrooms, safety on the streets and 24-hour medical services. The actual journey starts months in advance when walkers start training and raising the $2,200 required fundraising minimum. To help prepare for the Breast Cancer 3-Day, each walker is supported by coaches and online assistance that aid in all aspects of training and fundraising, while clinics, meetings, and training walks provide ongoing support. Depression Continued from pg 42 In November, 1932 Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected president. There being no television in those days, families across the nation gathered around the radio to hear his first inaugural address. My father had, even in earlier years, inculcated in me an interest in national affairs and I sat next to him listening to FDR speak. To this day, if I were to hear his voice I would immediately recognize it. I remember the steady confident tone and his words that “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” His first act as president was to declare a four-day bank holiday during which time Congress passed the Emergency Banking Relief Act. I remember the red, white and blue NRA signs posted on store windows indicating that the owner pledged himself to the guidelines of the National Recovery Act regulating the number of hours worked per week and banning child labor. Some of the young men in my community joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, living in camps in the forests of the nation, building reservoirs and planting trees. They were paid $30 a month with two-thirds of it sent home. Other men in my town became employed by the Works Progress Administration receiving $40 a month to help build roads, bridges, and public parks. The WPA’s most durable legacy is the great Hoover Dam. More misery, however, was yet to strike America. One day my father called me outside and asked me to look up toward the sky. I will never forget that sight. Floating across the sky were large brown clouds almost blotting out the sun. He said to me; “You are watching entire farms from the Mid-west floating out to sea.” There I was, looking upward from a town on Long Island actually 50 miles out from New York City, finding it almost unbelievable that these “skyborne farms” had traveled thousands of miles and were already over the Atlantic Ocean.

Depression Continued from pg 44 This was the result of the greatest drought to ever hit the U.S.A. It had begun in 1930. Records show that it affected the western third of Kansas, southeastern Colorado, the Oklahoma panhandle, the northern two thirds of the Texas panhandle and northeastern New Mexico. It turned the Great Plains into a desert. Lasting for almost five years it exacerbated the already existing depression. In the Spring of 1935, after weeks of dust storms, a lowhanging black cloud swept across the Midwestern landscape like a fog bringing life to a standstill. This was the final blow that caused the largest migration in American history, Over 200,000 people moved to California. John Steinbeck’s book, The Grapes of Wrath, published in 1939, tells the story. Later evaluation indicated that this “black blizzard” was caused by a combination of drought and misuse of the land – over plowing and over grazing. By 1938 some European nations were already at war. Unemployment dropped rapidly and the depression came to an end as orders came from overseas for armaments and munitions. Three years later millions of Americans were in the military. We “children of depression” indeed experienced hard times in our early years but these same researchers who gave us that nickname came up with a startling conclusion. “To an unexpected degree,” they said, “these children of the great depression followed a trajectory of resilience into the middle years of their life. They were doing better than expected from the perspective of their social origins.” Despite our hardships (or perhaps because of them), we became resilient, they concluded, because of three life course actions on our part – taking advantage of higher education, using marriage as a source of critical support, and undergoing service in the military – each experience reinforcing the other two. 46

These three experiences enhanced my occupational job status, my job stability, and my economic well being and, like my cohorts, helped me to succeed, as the researchers emphasized, “independent of childhood differences and socioeconomic origins.” Going overseas a boy and coming back a man, I was able to turn my childhood deprivations into the wisdom of maturity. Poverty, in other words, had a positive effect.

I also learned the dignity of work whether it was mowing lawns or delivering newspapers. Life is hard but is a most efficient teacher. It taught me that I had, and still have, the ability to bounce back from difficulties. In my determination to survive, I learned

T

he American Diabetes Association reports that nearly one in ten American adults has diabetes and, if present trends continue, one third of Americans born today will develop diabetes in their lifetime. Because diabetes is now being referred to as an “epidemic,” Fauquier Health has recruited a diabetes specialist to be part of its newly created Fauquier Health Physician Services. Endocrinologist Dr. Deepak Kashyap said, “I see this as a tremendous opportunity to provide vital specialty care in diabetes and other endocrine diseases.” Dr. Kashyap said that his role is to deburden primary care doctors by focusing on intense diabetes education and treatment. “I am able to focus my time with patients addressing their questions and working with them to improve their understanding of diabetes.” Dr. Kashyap is board certified in internal medicine and endocrinology and is a certified diabetes educator. A study by the National Institutes of Health revealed that about one-third of people who have diabetes don’t even know they have it. Dr. Kashyap said, “By the time most diabetics are diagnosed, the beta cells (insulinproducing cells) of the pancreas have been damaged so much that only 50 percent of them remain functional. And each year, another 3-5 percent of these cells fail. Newer drugs such as Byetta (a twice-daily injection) or Januvia (a once-daily pill) could possibly prevent further pancreas failure. “I have a lot of experience with these newer therapies. Byetta, for instance, can have the added benefit of decreasing the appetite for easier weight loss. Because excess weight is a contributor to 50

diabetes, this is an important benefit.” Dr. Kashyap added, “I am trained in the use of insulin pumps, which can be used in place of insulin shots. Pumps release the medication automatically, and there are fewer needle sticks.” But diabetes treatment is not all about medication. Diabetes is a “lifestyle disease,” caused and exacerbated by poor diet and inactivity as well as genetics. Dr. Kashyap said, “I spend a lot of time with my patients talking about meal plans and exercise habits. It can be difficult to convince patients of the long-term benefits of these changes because sometimes serious diabetic complications may take several decades to develop. Many adult diabetics don’t even have the most common symptoms: fatigue, increased thirst, frequent urination and blurry vision.” “If we catch diabetes early, and significant lifestyle changes are made, in some cases it can even be reversed. But I must have the patient’s participation. My job is to empower people to make the changes they need to make.” Fauquier Health Physician Services Fauquier Health Medical Center 550 Hospital Drive (at Fauquier Health Medical Center on Hospital Hill) Warrenton, VA 20186 Main number: 540.316.5940 Main Fax line: 540.316.5941

We have just started another new school year and everyone is trying to settle into a new routine. With the opening of two new schools this year, Kettle Run High School and Greenville Elementary near Vint Hill, we will see many changes in the traffic flow and we all need to keep a watchful eye out for the children. When you are out shopping for your last minute school supplies you will see just a few differences in our shopping landscape. With the current state of the real estate world Coldwell Banker, in the New Baltimore area, decided to close its offices and all the agents that worked there have moved to their office in Manassas. This ‘n That on Broadview Avenue has closed the doors while Where the Hunt Ends, next door, has done some sprucing up and had a Grand Re-opening. After 15 years of business in Warrenton, Deb Plesmid decided to sell her business Toddlin’ Time to Melissa Glittone. Toddlin’ Time used to operate out of the Karate Sports Academy, but Melissa has found a permanent space on Main Street and had the Grand Opening in the new space on September 23rd. Klein’s Embroidery successfully completed their move onto Main Street at the beginning of September. We had one of our long time businesses, A Formal Affair; receive an award from The Knot magazine for being a top wedding vendor in the Northern Virginia Region. Congratulations Debbie, your attention to detail and quality customer service has paid off in your three years of ownership. Warrenton is lucky to have such an award winning business. No new news from Buckland Farm Market, they are still waiting for the installation of their entrance road and the completion of their new building.
